"Hit <Speech_Music_Male> <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Male> ground ball right <Speech_Music_Male> side diving, stop <Speech_Music_Male> by ward the first <Speech_Music_Male> baseman gets up <Speech_Music_Male> fires to the <Speech_Music_Male> pitcher Suarez <Speech_Music_Male> covering first <Speech_Music_Male> on the play to get <Speech_Music_Male> Jesse winker, that's <Speech_Music_Male> going to retire the side <Speech_Music_Male> and outstanding <Speech_Music_Male> play <Speech_Music_Male> by Taylor ward <Speech_Music_Male> at first base <Speech_Music_Male> and that will end the <Speech_Music_Male> inning. No runs. <Speech_Music_Male> <SpeakerChange> No hits, <Speech_Male> no airs. Well, <Speech_Male> actually, Rick there was <Speech_Male> one error. <Speech_Male> Did you catch it? It <Speech_Male> sounded like he said <Speech_Male> Taylor wore just fine. <Speech_Male> What was the problem? <Speech_Male> Oh, well, the problem <Speech_Male> was that that wasn't <Speech_Male> Taylor ward. That <Speech_Male> was Jared Walsh <Speech_Male> playing first base and <Speech_Male> making that nice play, <Speech_Male> so this is more <Speech_Male> a case of mistaken <Speech_Male> identity than <Speech_Male> problems with pronunciation. <Speech_Male> As we have <Speech_Male> observed, Walsh <Speech_Male> and ward, <Speech_Male> that's become the big problem <Speech_Male> in the aftermath <Speech_Male> of Tyler wade's <Speech_Male> departure. So that was <Speech_Male> the top of the first, we <Speech_Male> had Walsh mistaken <Speech_Male> for ward, <Speech_Male> now we change over <Speech_Male> to the Mariners TV <Speech_Male> broadcast, <Speech_Male> we move to the top of the <Speech_Male> 6th, take it <Speech_Male> away, Dave <SpeakerChange> Sims. Julio can run. <Speech_Music_Male> Here's the throw <Speech_Music_Male> by Turner ward <Speech_Music_Male> Julio. He's in <Speech_Music_Male> there, Jesse <Speech_Music_Male> winker. Gives <Speech_Music_Male> the Mariners a <Speech_Music_Male> three two lead with <Speech_Music_Male> the sac <SpeakerChange> fly. <Speech_Male> So here's <Speech_Male> a new entry in <Speech_Male> the genre, Turner <Speech_Male> ward. <Speech_Male> There's no Turner on <Speech_Male> either of these two teams, <Speech_Male> so I don't know <Speech_Male> where the Turner came <Speech_Male> from. This is the <Speech_Male> second time that we've <Speech_Male> documented Dave <Speech_Male> Sims running afoul <Speech_Male> of Taylor <Speech_Male> ward's name. Last <Speech_Male> time it was award <Speech_Male> wade screw up, he probably <Speech_Male> thought it was safe <Speech_Male> to go back in the water <Speech_Male> once weight was <Speech_Male> gone. Nope, not <Speech_Male> yet, but it's good to <Speech_Male> have this bit back. <Speech_Male> But you know what? I'm gonna <Speech_Male> come clean and level with <Speech_Male> you here. When I <Speech_Male> was recording the segment <Speech_Male> the first time, I <Speech_Male> teed up that Rick riz <Speech_Male> clip, where he <Speech_Male> mistakes Jared Walsh <Speech_Male> for Taylor ward, <Speech_Male> and here's what I said <Speech_Male> the first time I recorded <Speech_Male> it, okay? You ready? <Speech_Male> This is still gonna <Speech_Male> sound like just me <Speech_Male> talking, but this <Speech_Male> is gonna be me talking <Speech_Male> a little while ago <Speech_Male> instead of right now. <Speech_Male> That was Brandon <Speech_Male> Walsh playing first base <Speech_Male> and making <SpeakerChange> that nice <Speech_Male> play. See, <Speech_Male> I screwed it up <Speech_Male> too. I made <Speech_Male> the branded marsh Jared <Speech_Male> Walsh mistake, <Speech_Male> even though Brandon <Speech_Male> marsh is no longer <Speech_Male> an angel. And I was <Speech_Male> even thinking to <Speech_Male> myself, as I was <Speech_Male> saying this, now if you're <Speech_Male> going to get all sassy <Speech_Male> and call out Rick <Speech_Male> riz for saying there <Speech_Male> were no errors when he <Speech_Male> made an error, you better not <Speech_Male> make an error yourself, <Speech_Male> and yet I did. <Speech_Male> And I didn't notice <Speech_Male> until producer <Speech_Male> Dylan let me know. <Speech_Male> And Rick riz was <Speech_Male> talking live. So <Speech_Male> he didn't have a producer <Speech_Male> who could tell him, <Speech_Male> hey, you just said <Speech_Male> ward, that was Walsh, <Speech_Male> just trying to be <Speech_Male> accountable here. <Speech_Male> From calling out other <Speech_Male> people's mistakes, <Speech_Male> got to own up to my own. <Speech_Male> Turns out talking <Speech_Male> is hard. My <Speech_Male> daughter's more than ten <Speech_Male> months old. She still <Speech_Male> can't do it. You know, I think <Speech_Male> we need like an <Speech_Male> FCC <Speech_Male> 7 second delay <Speech_Male> situation <Speech_Male> for word and <Speech_Male> weight and Walsh <Speech_Male> and marsh. <Speech_Male> So someone drops <Speech_Male> an inadvertent F bomb, <Speech_Male> you can just <Speech_Male> cut it out. If someone <Speech_Male> makes a word <Speech_Male> weighed Walsh marsh <Speech_Male> mistake, you just have <Speech_Male> someone standing by. <Speech_Male> Maybe we need to <Speech_Male> start imposing fines <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> about <Speech_Music_Male> <Advertisement> that could cost me money. <Speech_Music_Male> <Advertisement> The FCC doesn't regulate <Speech_Music_Male> <Advertisement> podcasts, so I'd probably <Speech_Music_Male> <Advertisement> be okay. I know <Speech_Music_Male> I've screwed up words <Speech_Music_Male> named in the midst of <Speech_Music_Male> this segment <Speech_Music_Male> about screwing up words <Speech_Music_Male> named before though. <Speech_Music_Male> This is not the first time <Speech_Music_Male> for me. These errors <Speech_Music_Male> are very relatable. <Speech_Music_Male> <Advertisement>

"Not really throwing punches. He was holding people back. He was on the periphery. He seemed to be perhaps even smiling a little bit. Just a classic show, hey, but supporting his teammates, I suppose. But you had the whole thing. You had the bullpen's running in, right? In parallel, and then. Actual punches being thrown. It does not always happen. You had Anthony Rendon poking Jesse winker in the face. Yes, Anthony randone with a cast. With a cat. Right hand using the left hand to do that. Yes. And you then had JP Crawford coming over over top, trying to land some flows. You had many just a multitude of people falling down, falling all over themselves. You had the fight, break up and come back together several times. You had Scott service and complete disarray, like he looked like he was and everything. On tucked, no ball cap, he looked like he was right there. In the middle of it, his he has been thought to be on a quite wobbly stool in recent weeks because of the Mariners underperformance, but I think we have talked in the past about how that that Clubhouse seems to like him quite a bit actually and I think that moments like this are probably part of why he has managed to endear himself to those players because he gets right in there as I noted on Twitter like I tend to think that brawling is pretty just goofy like you can just have your feelings without punching people. And it can be quite dangerous and the Mariners catcher Torrance dinged his shoulder as a result of this brawl. So like there were in addition to the suspensions which are hefty for some of their players like there are also some injuries that resulted from this. So I think it's goofy to do, but I have enjoyed learning that Jesse winker is not a hold me back bro kind of guy. Jesse winker, he seems to, I will do another swear now, seems keen to both start and finish it. And I feel like a lot of guys in baseball. They're one or the other kind of guy, and mostly the first kind, not the second. I think that it's not true of Jesse winker. Jesse winker, I want to get to the other things to transpire in the course of the fight. This feels like as good a time to share Jesse winker's quote after the game as he left the field following his ejection, he just like double burdened the entire ballpark. Yeah. Just aggressive aggressively. He was, you know, he there was no ambiguity about what he wanted the assembled crowd to do. And after the game and here I am quoting from Cory brocka, the athletics story about this dust up. The only thing I'm going to apologize for is slipping the fans off winker said that's it. As fans are spending their hard earned money to come watch us play a game and they didn't deserve that story apologize to the fans, especially the women and children. As if this bro were the Titanic and we were prioritizing sounds like it's from a past blast from the 19th century. It's like ladies day at the ballpark or something. I am sorry that the delicate sensibilities of the ladies and children in the crowd will open. Yes. Of course, there was a little girl there who had been present for previous sprawl. Yes. Hopefully it's not scarred by just seeing browse every time she goes to the ballpark. Fortunately, she gets nice makeups after the brows because the players and teams will give her things to make up for these dramatic sights she's seeing at the park, but that was an aspect to this story. And that was the least of what was happening with winker after the game, which I guess we can get to that too. But then after everyone is pried apart after birds are flipped and many, many people heard eject. Many people are ejected from this game, including three of the Mariners starters on the day. So that seems optimal. Yeah, I believe right into para the angels reliever was ejected twice. I believe. I think that might be true. The home plate and third base umpires. Yeah, they got him twice. And in addition to his poking of Jesse winker in the face Rendon was on the field while he's on the injured list, which you're not allowed to do, so that I think probably factored into his suspension as well. And then racial Iglesias was not done. He was still worked up and he threw an entire trip seeds. Yep. Just like at an empty field, everyone had retreated to their dugouts to try to regroup from it was like a 20 minute long delay. Such a big brawl that it took 15 or 20 minutes to resolve. And then he also threw gum on the field. Because he was quite fired up. One of the greatest gifts in some time, I think, just the slow motion and the majestic seed bags, just going every which way, like just a beautiful shot, it sounds like it should have been narrated by David Attenborough or something. It's just a great nature documentary here of sunflower seeds just scattering to the winds. It's just beautiful. Warner Herzog considering baseball here. The sunflowers, they fly. That's my Warner Herzog. I think it's really good. Yeah. Set that as good as your southern person saying, whence. This is so much happened here. I'll just list off the suspensions, I guess. So angels manager Phil Nevin, ten games, so we should talk a little bit about that because that is by suspension standards fairly severe, although considering what he did here, perhaps not severe enough. I don't know. Jesse winker, 7 games, and yeah, not only did he want to finish and start, he also wanted to restart maybe multiple times. He kept coming back and just kicking up the festivities again. You had Rendon, I guess a literal insult to injury situation or suspension to injury situation where he's out for 5 games after he comes back next year, presumably. Right. And he doesn't get to sit on the bench for the next 7 games. Also, basically, the angel's entire coaching staff got to spend it. Yeah. Assistant pitching coach, 5 games, and then went was three games to pair with three games. JP Crawford was also 5 games, Iglesias, two games, Julia Rodriguez, two games, and then angels bench coach Rae Montgomery, two games, angels catching coach, Bill hasselman won game, and then angels major league interpreter, many del Campo, two games. I don't know exactly what he did. I don't know whether he got suspended for interpreting some choice words that were directed from the angels or whether he was participating in the fisticuffs, but how about that? Even the interpreter was getting in on the action here..

"Your input and contributions to the show. We have some 70. Well, let me confirm here where it's some 72,000 or so on Twitter. We'd love to have you at Lance McAllister, the Twitter feed presented by Barley corns, three locations in northern Kentucky. Great not to be out of the patio to enjoy a cold one, and maybe some Doc style wings from our friends at Berlin corns. You can follow and contribute during the show outside the shore. Just follow along with what's coming up on the show. Like in about 10 Minutes, we'll talk with Jeff Hobson of Bengals dot com. This Cincinnati Reds just completed a 20 game stretch 20 games in 20 days. No days off. They started that stretch without Nick Castano's They ended that stretch without Jesse Winker. They completed that run. With the record of 13. And seven They set one up. The second wild card. 36 games to go and always like I like to when I can't offer context and perspective to give you a frame of reference to what we're talking about. And the Reds have 69 wins with 36 to go. 69 57. You remember the pain and misery at times of the rebuild? It was long. And it was slow. And it was difficult. Two. Was difficult to follow. Night in and night out. Some of the pictures that were being run out. Some of the everyday eight in the lineup. It was incredibly difficult to see a big picture. When you were stuck in the moment of the the muck and mire of a rebuild. In 2015. The Reds won 64 games. In 2016. They won 68 games. In 2017. 1 68 games. In 2018. They won 67 games. We are sitting here on August 23rd. And the Reds have 1 69 games. With 36 remaining. On August the third 23rd the Reds are sitting here with more wins than they had in the entire 2015 16 17. And 18 seasons. How much fun is this? I was reading a piece over the weekend Bleacher report and the it was their August edition of a word to describe your major league team right now, and they had, you know for the Yankees reinvigorated because the Yankees are now back in the race. It looks like they were left for dead. The Tampa Bay Rays. The word to describe was unconventional, because the Rays do things that a lot of teams never even thought about doing or trying. The White Sox cruising because they're running away with their division. I saw the A's described as unheralded because the A's are like Who's that? How are they doing? Who are some of those guys of the New York Mets? The were disappointing. In the N l. Centrally head for the Brewers destined For the Cardinals they had lurking. That's a good word. The Cardinals are lurking. You think they're gone? And then you kind of look around like they're still here. Pirates abysmal cubs, their word choice for the Cubs was reset. The word choice for the Reds was Precarious. And bleacher report wrote. The Reds lead the National League and ranked third in the majors in O. P. S. And the starting pitching has also been rock solid. If they had an even halfway decent bullpen, they'd be a serious threat for an October run, Late inning leads are precarious, to say the least with this Reds team. Um, I would have a different word. We've used to describe this team a lot. Resilient. They've been fun, and they've been frustrating on on each side each end of the spectrum, But this team has been resilient. They have stare down adversity. I went back and looked at it this morning. They lost and this is hard to comprehend. Now as hot as he's been They played without Joey Votto for 28 games. What? Not a week. Not two weeks. They play without Joey Votto for 28 games. Yes, He was not on his terror at the time. I get that, but you know what the record was. 14 and 14. They survived. They found a way they were resilient last year, starting first baseman Who the hell is going to play first? Now he's out how long then they lost. Nick Castano's I'll Never forget the night he takes the pitch off the hand on, think it don't It's broken, he's done. They were without Nick Castellanos for 17 games again, Not a couple of days, not a week, 17 days. I didn't count the time he was on the rise. We didn't play in the one game he pinch hit. I kind of from the time he got to hurt to the time we return was 17 kids. You know what the record was without him Without Nick, cause the Ottos 19 8. You know, winning record, They managed to not just hang around and survive. They found a way to have a winning record without Nick Castano's right now there without Jesse Winker. Jesse Winker is going to get MVP votes. They've been without him for seven games. They're probably going to be without him for I don't know. 14 more. 21 more. I have no idea. I just know in the first seven without Jesse Winker. They're five and two. Think of that for a second. Lesser teams would have folded up the tents and said we're out of here. 14 and 14 without motto for 28 19 8 without Castano's for 17, 5 and two without Winker for the first seven of this running, Let's not We don't have time to get into all the pitching injuries or moose or others. It goes back to the resiliency of this baseball team in the ability for guys to pick up the slack, and it's what I love about this team. Night tonight. When I do my my notes my sheet. I write things down. I highlight of my circle. I put an asterisk underlying things. You know, I've said this before, but it is so true about this team, and it's more so about this team than any rates team I can remember in a long time, the number of different contributors to this team the number of different guys who have a moment. Or moments it might be in at bat. It might be a catch. It might be one at bat. It might be one catch. It might be a game. It might be a week long run. It might be a two week run. But think of the number of guys who have stepped up and done something to help This team show Go isn't hitting makes the running, sliding all out. Catch Over the weekend. Tyler Nay Quinn. Tyler is going to a large extent We're going to talk about him towards the back end of the hour With my my second chances. My brand center second chances. Tyler, adequate to a large extent, is a great symbol of.

"This dude is winning rookie of the year in the national league. I don't care. He's winning it. He's the best. He's the best rookie in the national league. by far. This dude is so much fun to watch for the reds jesse winker is in sixth place right now with a three ninety five on base percentage and then seven plays rate on the tail of both of. Those guys is freddy freeman. Who has three ninety three. On base percentage in seventh place are slugging percentage leaders. Go as follows. Shohei ohtani followed by vladimir guerrero junior followed then by joey votto rafael denver's and matt olsen rounds out the top five. Right cyber nicholas casinos. Jesse winker all right outside looking in shohei otani has a six forty seven on base versus me. Slugging percentage at this moment and that and that comes from him having more home runs than he does doubles or triples and leading the league in that category. It's pretty impressive. If i do say so myself vladimir guerrero junior is in second place with a six eleven. Slugging percentage that dude also more home runs than doubles but shohei ohtani just edging slightly. In that aspect joey votto a 575 slugging percentage which is really impressive considering he started off slow this year and then got hurt and since he's come back he has been an absolute terror and almost like i would consider him one of the mvp candidates right now in the nfl. Like i think he's. He's clearly among the league leaders in hitters. And i think he's one of the biggest reasons that reds team. I mean that red steam has a ton of guys. You nicholas casinos. Jesse winker jonathan india. You have a really good pitching staff and sunny gray with wade miley and louis. The reds the reds team. I am loving this team a cinderella story. I'm sorry it's just. I think this team has has the makings at at really getting people excited about baseball. Which is why like like even though like you have the giants and and the and the dodgers out the as well as the padres like the reds are the reds are pretty good. I i really like this team. They don't have any quit in them and that offense is going to keep them in ballgames. I just absolutely love that team. Rafael denver's though they are these in fourth place right now he has eight five. Seventy slugging percentage and matt olsen has a five seventy slugging percentage as well but he's played just a couple or just a couple of fewer games than rafael denver's. Bryce harper is the guy. I guy on the outside looking in with eighty five sixty seven on base percentage to get into the top five. That's another guy that i think in the nfl definitely deserves some consideration in the mvp. Conversation as does nicklaus cassiano some jesse winker and they both have a five sixty. Three slugging percentage five six percentage. Both of those guys have definitely cooled off since they're hot starts way back in the early of the season but they are still very productive instill great hitters. They're just not as hot as they once. Word art illegal leader. In opie is vladimir guerrero. Junior has a one thousand twenty opie s so far this year followed by shohei otani who has a one thousand seven opie s then. Bryce harper is in third place with a nine eighty one. Now he is on the outside looking in on slugging percentage but because of how good his on base percentage is throws his. Opiates up there with the other guys. Like shohei otani and vladimir guerrero junior and. that's one of the reasons why i think. Bryce harper deserves more credit in this category. He's followed by. max muncie. Who is another guy that definitely needs to be talked about more a little bit in this. Mvp conversation muncie as a nine sixty four on base percentage. Excuse me opie s on baseball slugging. And i see the reason that i don't really love. Max muncie as at. Mvp candidate is because while he does walk a lot and when he does hit the ball it goes along way he was hitting two seventy four right now which is still good..

Pitching for Craig Councils Brewers atop the National League Central by six games over the red 53 37 their record. Louise Aureus leads off and plays third base, sitting second, the left fielder Christian Yelich. William Thomas is the shortstop. Batting third, batting fourth and catching Omar Narvaez Nava Seo Garcia's in right field, hitting fifth. Jace Peterson play second base and bats sixth. Adding seven the first baseman Rowdy Tellez Jackie Bradley Jr. Is in center field, hitting eight with the pitcher Freddie Peralta, batting ninth. The Empire's Tonight at home Plate gave Morales John Lipkins at first base. Brian O'Nora is its second. Doug Eddings, the crew chief at third, please again to be joined by the Cowboy, Jeff Brantley and Cowboy these games have been awfully fun kind of look forward to him all day long, don't you? There's a bit of anticipation coming into This series, and the games have lived up to it. Without a doubt. The Reds have got to figure out a way early to lay off that high heater from Freddie Peralta. This guy was just named an All Star last night. And then before the game today, they found out Omar Narvaez will be on the All Star team. First pitch of the game is on the way in a strike over the outside corner at the knees. Oh, and one On Jonathan, India. Tonight's Tim Star game time temperature is 72 degrees, Freddie Peralta into his wind up the right hand over that herky jerky delivery deals, the old one swinging a miso and two on India. Complete home comfort with an energy saving high efficiency. Tim Start heating and cooling system. Find your local temp star dealer at tim star dot com. Tip star quality You can feel Peralta, home of the 02 to India, and he takes down and away and that'll even there. That'll, uh, pushed the count of all in two strikes. India hitting 2 78 6 homers and 35 runs batted in. Numbers this year for Freddie Peralta. Pretty good. Here's the one to pitch. And it's fouled away off the right by India. Had a couple of hits last night, going two for four, was hit by a pitch his last time up. We're also is making his 17th start of the year. 732.23 e R a 129 strikeouts. Walked 42. Here's the pitch and it is off the outside edge to India. Evening the count two balls and two strikes. But cowboy you talk about And need to lay off the high fastball command has really suffered for Peralta really over his last three games. Yeah, you look at the 13 walks in his last 18 innings. He's not giving up a lot of hits. He's only allowed 42 hits in the 93 innings. So he is tough to make solid contact. 22 pitch swinging the miss down on strikes. India went away that'll bring Jesse Winker to the plate. Freddie Peralta, getting named to the All Star team. He was named there as an alternative, but you look at the numbers and I just ran through most of them. And this is a guy that is very, very deserving of being there. In fact, the Brewers will now be represented by five players and this year's All Star game. As a couple of them face off here. You have a pitcher on the mound? The catcher in the batter all all stars. Here's the pitch to Linker. And Jesse takes low ball one. Well, the Brewers Rotation. Three of the Six because they have a six man rotation. Three of the six are going to the All Star Game. Peralta Corbyn Burns. And Brandon Woodrow. One pitch and Linker swings sits a towering fly ball into shallow left. Yellow will move in and under it, He's there to make the catch, and it's out Number two. This is one of those kinds of games Tommy, where one inning Could make the difference in the entirety of this ballgame. Here is Nick Castellanos. Asciano sitting 3 30 17 homers 54 runs batted in Castano's Was held hitless in the game last night. Had a hit. And four at bats in Game one of the series. All right now he comes in just one for eight, the first two games against Milwaukee here. Cases are empty with two men out. It may not be just the inning. It may be one swing of the bat. We're all to Deals. Two Castano Sand check swing taking strike over the outside corner, the count his own one. Castano's has had success against Peralta. The Oh one pitch. And he takes just off the outside. It's good bitch from Peralta, but it just missed away. "Short and workweek nonetheless. I hope you're having a good day regardless. I don't care if you were off yesterday i just. I just hope you're doing well now. Okay what does the nc double as new name. Image and likeness rules mean for college athletes. That exciting conversation is going to happen in about thirty minutes and they look at the mlb draft which is happening on sunday starting on sunday at about five forty five a busy hour in front of us. Although i say every hour is a busy hour reds will try to extend their winning streak tonight to six games. No jesse winker is they. Sit him against a lefty jesse one of the interesting things about this team and this is this is good. This is good. You certainly want jesse to hit and a high level and my guess is he will. It's just listening to tomorrow. And tracy talk about jesse winker and nick castanos being all stars. Nick castanos is having an mvp caliber. Season jesse winker. Having the year that he's having think about this for a second think about when you talk about both those guys and i know i'm sort of all over the place when i talked about these two but with with jesse winker. It wasn't that long ago if you go back to the winter of two thousand nineteen to two thousand twenty when the reds acquired shogo akiyama and nick castanos and they were hell bent on giving nixon's l a chance to play center field. It wasn't that far fetched to suggest. That jesse winker may get squeezed out of a gig. Now that did assume that sends el was gonna stay healthy. Which unfortunately he do. But i remember those conversations. Wait they got four outfielders for three spots. And god you know what you wanna play castanos. There's a reason why i gave them. Sixty four mill and send zeller is number two overall pick and they wanna play them in the outfield and it. Surely they didn't sign shogo. I'm going to be a platoon player. Although that's kind of what's happened but it wasn't that farfetched to wonder. God is jesse. Winker going to be squeezed out. And then things change pandemics shortened season. We have d- age and so it was kind of taken care of. Winker had a great first month last year. But we're not that far removed from wondering you know. Is it either really put up or shut up time for jesse and winker or is there going to be not as playing time for jesse winker because of what else. They've done in the outfield. Take that to where we've been this year where he's been invaluable. Can you imagine this team. We're out without them. Not only could you imagine this team without him. Could you imagine this team. If if jesse winker was only having a good year instead of the kind of season that he said obviously he's cooled off here a little bit. Recently the nicasio thing remember that offseason. They acquired him. It was kind of late in the game. I mean you know there was almost this this feeling when the reds got cast janas which was late in january so only a couple of weeks before spring training. God if they don't get this nick cassidy honest guy. What are they going to do in right field and we were talking about the they're going to have to bring back..

"Back in the lineup by Imagine why you give Jesse Winker a day off tonight. It is. It's It's great. Um, you know, the third time away from the lineup as one day, uh, couldn't keep him out of the lineup any any longer than that. They both are just wanting to be an area. They understand. It's who they are, but also they understand the importance of these games. Double check today in batting practice, just to be sure that we're not putting them in any situation that will keep the 500, but, uh um that's great to have them both back in there. This game in this series. It's an interleague series right as the National League Central Division race really heats up, but you kind of have to treat this series a little differently with that Brewer series right on the heels. Um, you definitely have it. In mind and, you know, but there's real danger and looking past this series of something we talked about. Is the team yesterday, VCI. Um, yeah, This is a, uh I wouldn't even say sneaky, good team. That is a good team that we're playing, and we're capable of, um under together, really the gaming machine anytime and they can hurt you in a lot of different ways. Um, so it took our best yesterday, and it's going to take our best the next to and that's really where our focus is. Uh, you know, you would actually think. This is going to be a weird thought here. But you would think that pitchers would have a halfway decent approach at the plate because you would think they'd be able to think right along with the guy that they're facing. Well, I don't think it's the think right along. I think it is the ball coming at a high velocity. And it looks like it's coming toward you. And there has never in the history of this game. Besides Babe Ruth, I guess I should say In the history of arbitration, a pitcher that has gone to arbitration and said, Well, I hit really good this year. I know my er A was eight but I hit really good. I hit 2 67 and I hit five home runs. You do not get paid. For getting hit, and to be honest with you that that's really where the rubber meets the road. You take things seriously. When you know you're going to get paid for it. "For baseball is John Gant goes through his warm up tosses Cowboy. This guy is quite the enigma of sorts. He walks a boatload of people. But yet his numbers are still Pretty good. Yeah, I think when you look at Gantz overall E r a at 1.6 kind of pops your eyes a little bit. As you go through his stats, you think? Well, the guy doesn't give up any home runs. He's only allowed one home run in his 50 and two thirds innings, But yet he leads the National League and free passes. 34 walks in 50 innings. You put that together with the 43 hits, you think, boy. That is a lot of traffic on the base pass, But he gets a lot of chases on the change up Once runners aboard the Reds will have to be cognizant of that and be very patient. Once they put rallies together, you described that it reminds me a little bit of what we've seen from Luis Castillo in the past. So we'll see how it goes for Gant against the Redlegs Today, Jonathan India stands in to get it started. Hope you enjoy it. Reds and Cardinals from Busch Stadium in ST Louis. Let's play again into his wind up. The right hander turns you loose and we are underway is a first pitch. Mrs. Outside for Ball one want to know the count? On Jonathan India, standing in hitting 2 61 5 homers He's knocked in 24. India has been red hot, especially in this series breaking ball drops in for strike. The count is even one on one India hitting 6 67 in this series. Is six for nine couple of Homer's three driven in in the first three games. The pitch is taken low and now India finds himself ahead in the count. Two balls and a strike. The wrap up of this three game series. Red's going for the series sleep something that hasn't done. Here in ST Louis and 1992 to 1 pitch and India takes low and outside. He's way ahead Now on Gant, three and one And India doing exactly what we said. Laying off pitches out of the zone. Being selective make can't throw you a strike. He's thrown just one of the first four pitches, and here comes the 31 and India slaps it right back up the middle into center field for a base hit. He just keeps right on along India with a leadoff single here in the first inning. You have to like what you're seeing from Jonathan, India. You talked about it day before yesterday about the change in the approach at the plate. Not really the swing as much as the bit of the toe tap for timing. If he stays like this is gonna be kind of fun. It has been very fun. In fact, over his last 13 games, he's hitting almost 3 80. "He is dead, isn't in the conversation for best shortstop. He is the best. Shortstop, you don't know if you feel the same way, like forgave, oh. It's a flashier shortstop, but first of all, he's a much worse defensive shortstop much worse, right? And and I used to have this debate in the Press Box at Fenway with somebody who worked for mlb.com, actually, the statcast baseball sauvage. And I said, look, I think Xander Bogaerts is a great hitter. I think he's a good defensive player. I and that was, you know, 2014-2015 wage. I think he's become a great defensive shortstop, and he's really matured. And that's what that's the part of the game of that. I think he worked on the most refined his skills and what not correct me if I'm wrong but that's where I think he's grown really. As a, there's no question, there's no question. And, you know, it's not whatever the analytics show, I will tell you the, the eye test will will suggest that he not only makes the plays, but then every once awhile, he makes the above-average play to me in, in, in Cora had mentioned this, he's the strongest shortstop in baseball, and I think Bush was saying, was a, he's a bigger shortstop, obviously, when we think bigger shortstops, I think Ripken right, Ripton, okay. He was barely moving around in second half of his career. Shouldn't really have been playing dead. Hey, Ron. Obviously the he was too big to save. You know, he needed to move the third, your guide. Barry Larkin. He's a big guy, right? That really, you know, he's six foot long, he play he was a big guy. He's lost weight, he's on the Reds. TV crew here in Cincinnati and he does he actually does a great job. I wanted to get to Jesse Winker and Nick Castellanos office before we conclude but no Barry was He was average sized. Dave Concepcion was bigger than than very large. Yeah, but he was skinnier. Yeah, so, you know, you look at Bogart's, he's 6 to, I think he's listening to 6 to 2:18 a.m. but he's solid, right? And so, I just look at when you were talking to this conversation about the best shortstop, I don't think it's a tell me, who's better, like, you have to tell me who's been off all around? I mean, this would be the only guy that would but he's terrible defensively, right? I I'm not arguing Rob, I'm just playing this game. This is where we are. You sure it's all about production. It's very little, I mean there are metrics on defense. I get that certainly are runs prevented and whatnot, but so much of the game is so I'm pitching numbers, spin rates, and in offense, o p s and slash lines, and that's it. And that's how decisions are made on rosters. Yeah well and then, you know, you know why I mean, because you can lean on a team like Tampa look at Campos baffling to me and and you look at well, why is tax so good and not only could this you're the good every year? Yes, because you have Manuel Margot, you know, six six t o p s or whatever it clean up and and you know you go down the line and you lose Charlie Morton and you lose flakes now and you're still in it and really a big part of it is because of, you know, they're leaving a lot of stuff that you talk about but also this go back to defensive part of it. Like they're really good defensive team, very very so when you don't have the payroll right, role pays primarily for offense and defensive depth. Yes. And and so does that tell you what is almost more important now? And this is and unfortunately, you know what happens is that you have teams saying to their ownership..

Terminate your loan early, surly, regardless of maker model with the loan in termination least program at Kelsey Chevrolet throughout 50 and 2 75 at the Lawrence Burg exit might boost Octus was on the Red Side Stove league show last Wednesday night with Tommy Thrall in Gym Day, He said something That, um Think will be music to your ears. This was talked about at length in terms of sports talk extra innings last year, it was the subject of great angst and debate from fans throughout the season. It was about the way the Reds approached their advance. They were the way they went about things in the batter's box. And the frustration that came with that they hit 2 12 is a team the inability it seems to shorten the swing with two strikes to hit it the other way against the shift to get the run home from third with less than two outs. There was a lot in play last year. That added up to frustration of an offense that simply didn't seem to have another of a plan or the ability to execute that plan. And then Mike Moose, Takis said this on Wednesday night going into spring training them that's gonna be a focus of ours is being able to manufacture those runs and in other ways instead of just relying on the home run You know, Obviously, the game's changing on home runs are huge. But in order to be a championship team, you've got to find ways to score runs other ways. Then you know, with the pitching step that we have, if we can get a lead going into those later innings and give those guys a chance to shut the door. I mean, I like our chances. Mike Moustakas last week. Thoughts. Is that not something you wanted to hear? It's our focus this offseason. Our focus. He didn't say my focus. It's our focus that that means it's something that has been discussed amongst the team. Not Mike Moustakas. A my focus is I gotta make it. Our focus is to find ways to manufacture runs other than the home run, which is, Biggie said. But in order to be a championship team, we need to find other ways to score Besides the long ball. You know, it's such a mixed bag when you look back at it, I mean, it's not like they led the league in strikeouts Last year, there's 30 teams in Major League Baseball. They were 12th and strikeouts. The average major league team last year struck out 534 times. The Reds struck out 500. They struck out 5 34. The average team struck out 5 20. So what did inordinate amount of strikeouts I think you you'd probably win a bet on this. They finished Tied for the National League lead in times walked They walked a lot. 239 times the average major league team walked 203 times, so they did do their share of walking. They worked the plate appearance. They saw the second most pitches of any team in baseball last year. Next to the Cleveland Indians. I think some of this is clearly There's different levels of this. There's a bigger picture of all this part of this, you could say is great American ballpark in the enticement that comes in this ballpark, and it's so inviting. Let me just lift the ball in this ballpark, and it's gonna be a home run. There's also the reality of what covert did last year to baseball. It was a springs training that that started get up and running and then ended early. And then hitters didn't hit for two plus months. And then they came back and they got two weeks to prepare, and then they went at it. It's a lot easier if you're a pitcher during the pandemic of 2.5 months off, you know, Nate Jones told us he built a mountain, his Barnet was throwing into a net. Lot easier to do that for a picture that it is for a hitter to find someone to throw him pictures or a batting cage, the throwing fastballs and breaking balls, curveballs, changeups, you name it so clearly, if if you look there's a lot of guys who seasons you look and say, what the heck was that Christian yell. It's what's up with your season a year ago and others But then there's the kind of the micro of all this of stepping into the batter's box and what the plan was what the approach was. Don't know if you would second this, but I remember so many times seeing the reds take a strike and thinking, What do you want? What were you looking for? What were you expecting? In that count? At that point, I looked it up today. They looked at the sixth highest percentage of strikes of any team in baseball last year. The inability to create action. The mentality of the long ball and it's I hesitate to. I don't pin this on Jesse Winker. I can use him as an example. And yet if you're going to criticize anybody for their offense last year, the last guy would be Jesse Winker. Because Jesse Winker was their best offensive player last year, and it wasn't even close. But man, the visual I have Is Jesse Winker swinging so hard? He would fall down. He would drop to a knee. And I remember Eric Davis has always talked about, um, approached the plate and and balance and balance being such a key. And and it made me think of Jesse Winker and watching him completely and totally off balance by a swing that would bring him out of his shoes and and drop him, sometimes to any sometimes the seat of his pants. The inability to spray the ball the other way in the approach, All right, I've got two strikes. Let me shorten. Let me let me shorten my swing. Choke up a little. Let me maybe spray it the other way. And yet, if you remember one of the one of the quotes of last season that drove everybody batty, referring to the fact the Reds were hitting into bad luck. Well, part of that. To a certain extent is true. If you look blast season, a.
