'The King of Talk': Remembering Larry King

"Larry King has died. He was 87 in a career that spanned 60 years. Larry King interviewed just about everybody. Reporter Jeff Lunden has this appreciation. With his trademark suspenders and his deep baritone voice tinged with a Brooklyn accent. Larry King spoke with Presidents George Bush is our honored guest for the full hour. Next on Larry King Live World leaders Moammar Qaddafi. The leader of the nation of Libya, celebrities, the brilliant Barbra Streisand, authors, scientists, comedians, athletes and on and on and on. I'm always engrossed in the guest. Larry King spoke with Jesse Thorn on the turnaround podcast in 2017. I'm always listening to the answer. I'm always learning, So I guess I'm better every day at learning. The Brooklyn born King actually was an indifferent student, but said he always had an innate curiosity when we would go to dodge it. All my friends wanted autographs at the injury. I never asked for an autograph, but I would walk with the players is they're going to their cars asking questions. Why'd you bunt? Why they do this in the third inning. My curiosity is still insatiable. King began his career is a DJ in Miami, and it's where he got his name is well. When a station manager told him his given surname, Zeiger was too ethnic. He chose King from a liquor ad in a newspaper. By the late 19 seventies, King had an overnight talk show on national radio. Then the 1985 Ted Turner hired him for his new network, CNN. Media commentator and author. Bill Carter, who's a CNN contributor, says the timing was perfect. Picking up something like Larry King may love sense because he had Establish himself kind of as a guy who could get big guests. They could have big names and promoted and became sort of the linchpin of their prime time lineup, and King stayed there for 25 years. Some critics complained that he was too chummy with celebrities and lob softball questions. It is guests. His strategy was I'm never gonna make the guests uncomfortable. And that means not only will they come back, but they'll tell their friends. He won't ask you about that ugly divorce of yours. You know, he'll ask you about your favorite movie, so he didn't challenge people, But he did get information. He was pretty good at that, like when he talked with ex President Richard Nixon. Well, I don't want to dwell in the Watergate thing that's been covered so well. But some personal things when you drive by Those collections of buildings. The hotel the two apartment houses the office building, You feel weird, funny. No, I never give it a thought. Never given a thought. Never given a thought. That's one place where you just don't look back. As far as Watergate is. I know you don't look up at the buildings themselves. Not at all. Not a matter of fact, I've never been in the Watergate. Larry King famously didn't do a lot of preparation before his interviews, the less I know. Better Now, That sounds strange to people. Like If you wrote a book. I wouldn't read the book for interview do because I would then know too much about the book and I'm in the same boat as the audience. They haven't read the book, but King knew the national zeitgeist. He covered the first O. J. Simpson trial every night, says Bill Carter. He basically started the cable monomania move. We're going to just cover this story. That's it In a way. It was perfect for life because it was celebrity oriented. It was in the news, but it was not political. Ultimately, CNN canceled King show because it wasn't political competition from Fox and MSNBC took its toll on the ratings. But King was a survivor. He was married eight times and had Quinn couple bypass surgery after a massive heart attack, and King took his talk show to streaming video and kept on working for NPR news. I'm Jeff Lunden in New York.

The face mask that could end the pandemic

"What if there were a face mask that when exposed to cove, it would change color. Well, there's about to be as we hear from KCBS reporter Jim Taylor. Researchers at U. C. San Diego awarded a $1.3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to develop this face mask with a sensor. We have a prototype of the actual sticker that would go on the mask and do the color change. So most of the fluid IX have been worked out. Jesse Jokers professor of Nano engineering, he says. This sensor will work on any kind of face mask as you breathe through this device. It's over the course of the day it would accumulate biomarkers of covert 19. And then you would release some liquids that cup change colors if you've been exposed, so it's simple. It's affordable, and it's on the market by this summer,

Doctor Who: The Faceless Ones review – a murderous Who-dunnit comes alive

"The recent. You know kind of low budget animation. That they've been doing the more cost effective animation. I should say and thankfully we it was released in twenty twenty and finally have a complete story so this is one of the things on my to do list that i wanted to get to as soon as possible when i was making the new schedule. So this story written by david ellis and now the hulk or zydeco the incredible malcolm hulk who wrote a bunch of notable stories from the patrick troughton in jon pertwee eras including will. Hey the war games. Patrick crowds final story the celerion. The first appearance of this larry ins ambassadors of death which was really cool story that we talked about here it also the seat devils a fun story with the master that we haven't talked yet so that's one of those that hopefully we'll get to at some point here on next up. This was directed by jerry mill. This was the eighth serial of doctor who season four nineteen sixty seven starring. Patrick troughton as second doctor. Unida wills as poly right. Michael craze as been jackson in. This is betty polly's last story by the way. And frazer hines as jimmy mcrae. Mid who at the end of the story gets a promotion to main companion after benn polly Exit the tartus closing out the way of heart once and for all so jesse. I know that this is probably your first time watching the story. I'm guessing david your thoughts about it. So i yeah and i'm gonna have a couple of questions we'll get you that i assume you're going to cover in trivia but just in case you want yeah So i settled down to watch this Linda was out of. Linda was spending the night with her sister. Kaya in a many birthday celebration. And so i watched the first dealer yes. I watched the first three on friday. Night and i watched the remaining three on saturday And i enjoy the. I enjoy the last three a lot more than i did. The first three now. I think part of that may have been. I was a little tired. It was today but also think the first three were a lot of setup. Yeah in once the next three you got really a lot of the story and was really well done so overall. I'm pretty happy with this one. I'm glad we got to see it. Yeah and And i'm looking forward to talking to you about it but my question is In you've probably covered this before. But i have slept since then. Why was so much of patrick. Totten's episodes lost and specifically about this. Well there was a purge by the bbc to essentially make space as i understand it and in the process they junked a bunch of old doctor. Who's they didn't think they needed them anymore. In their infinite stupidity and a lot of them were were episodes. From the william heart. Oh and patron eras you know there was in levin and some others that had managed to recover some of those over time because this was believed in the seventies and since then you know there's been a lot of effort by fans to try and recover episodes which have either been somehow scattered to the winds across the entire globe and or just play lost in this story. They'd only managed to recover episodes one in three. That are returned to the bbc archives. Because hey now they want to keep them a what. I what i find interesting. Charles is the seventies relatively speaking. I mean i love. Lucy had been in syndication. So you think people would have realized the Cordao yet and the importance and also. I know that they talked about that. Many of the early tonight show episodes back with johnny carson. The same thing they just re. They didn't keep them. They did because they didn't think they're reporting. And i remember years ago. I talked to someone and he was british. And he's like yeah doctor who it's it's just the it's just a minor kid show. Yeah i'm sure that was the ski. Oh executive thinking yes the super geniuses as wylie coyote super genius exact who made this horrible decision probably thought. Well it's just a kid show doesn't matter you know they. They won't miss it. We've already done Because back in the day dear listeners you used to have summer reruns until you would show an episode twice and and it was kinda done. So i'm sure they were thinking okay. We've already had a repeat time to move on. It's just it's it was just a really bad unfortunate thing that happened to the show because you know like a lot of classic moments are just now lost in presumably. A lot of these are never going to be available in their original format. Now they're going to be like stories like this. That would probably be reconstructed through animation. Or maybe whatever happens in the next ten years technology wise that they could be recreated so now and i guess they had audio right so now the audio either fans have the audio or someone in so that's for steps are recreating it. Yeah thankfully now though. The upside that. I should mention was that through the efforts of fans a lot of kids at home you know. They had their home tape cassette recorders right. Or whatever you know recording real

"If i was somehow asked to say only one thing about the place. I'm from it would be that it. Has this unforgettable smell when it rains. It slightly floral but mostly. It's this very specific cool earthy desert aroma. And there's usually a calm clear breeze which carries these concentrated little pockets of fragrance. The smell comes from the creosote bush. A resilient plant that thrives only in this particularly arid landscape especially after a thunderstorm the bush releases a bunch of these oil compounds into the air stuff found in citrus rosemary pines and it just smells like the earth. Exhales creosote can live for thousands or tens of thousands of years. It's one of the oldest living things on the planet and here. This ancient brush grows at the foot of the franklin mountains and the valley they nestle below cutting through the desert valley is the rio grande dividing to cities and countries. Al paso texas to the north and south. What is in mexico to the south. This story my story long before. I became a journalist and moved to the east coast begins here. I remember seeing opazo from the hill. Where my morning lived. This is my brother. Jesse will actually. His name is kiss. Who says he goes by. Jesse he was five when i was born in. What is just a few miles from the border. One of his very first memories is looking across the border to the. Us we could she youtube. We could see the buildings highway could see the other signed. My parents could see the other side to in mexico. We lived in bath. These tenements studio apartments all connected through the same courtyard. Something like ten families shared one bathroom outside. My dad like a lot of folks already crossed the border practically every day to odd jobs in el paso like an act factory. He and my mom had to quit school by the age of thirteen to help their families. The other side of the border looked safer. Quieter the kind of place. That could afford my brother. And i the life. Our parents couldn't have when i was three. My parents took all the money they saved and moved us across the border to a small refurbish trailer in the most rural undeveloped outskirts of el paso county. The land was dry and flat untouched. And i remember getting off the car and seeing those huge tumbleweeds and under they're usually there's snakes snakes and when i moved out here there was always there was always snakes coming out. One of my earliest memories. Ever is the smell of creosote bush. Here we were ecstatic as a family. Love the trailer nelson demos on your house. Basically we still went to. What is every weekend. There was always cousin's birthday party or a baby shower or an anniversary in mexico. We made home videos at these big family parties. A bunch of kids speaking english and staying way late. I remember what is always being loud like fun loud. We danced into the early morning hours. At either of my grandmothers houses of root of cousins eating street tacos glistening in the dark amber of the mexican streetlamps. This was my early life mexico on the weekend. The states during the week soon i started school on the first day of first grade. My teacher called me mary. My actual name is linda unnamed down for my grandmother. My mom says no one ever asked her. If changing my name from monday to marry it was okay. She just kind of found out in an open house with c. Was we loping house when my teacher started talking about mary medicine. Meister this the my mother. Mary and she was like who's that on the mary mary. All it didn't even occur to my mom to object. We were knew she didn't speak english. We were undocumented students. Like i guess they'll call her. Mary

The (Beauty) Business of Philanthropy with Karissa Bodnar

"Lot of people you know. They write gen generals and they say i wanna be in. You know this part of the business. How do i get there and to be really honest. I don't always know how to respond. Because you know. I know where i am in the business and i know the steps that i took but You know they might say. I wanna be a perfumer. I wanna start my own liner. I wanna be a makeup artist. And i don't always know how to respond How how would you respond to a question like that because for you. You didn't know how to get to where you were but you got there. What was the thing that means you get. There was just focus or asking around. Like how did you get to where you are. Oh it's such a great question just so specifically to being beauty product developer. I took any job. I could get in the beauty industry and ben was always looking at it through the lens of okay. I'm a makeup artist right now. But how would i create a product. Let me learn everything i can about. Let me google got ingredient. Means if i don't have access to expert and really a lot of it is just that passion coming through. And i think when i got hired on xtra. Sonic graduated from college. I got my foot in the door always with an eye. I wasn't directly to impact development. When i started but it was always expressing how much i wanted to be in product development so then when i finally got the chance i was like i am not gonna let this go by and i think just so many of the skills when you're starting out in your career or transferable whether it's product development or marketing and so at the end of the day when you're first starting out a lotta censure making power points on spreadsheets. You're you're doing a lot of a lot of tasks that you can. You can transfer But i would say a showing that initiative in the passion for whatever you want to do so for me. It was product development. I think people will pick up on that and they'll wanna mentor. You okay. that's really great advice. Okay thank you. plus your husband's a product developer. So we have to save his his advice matches up with choruses. I'm gonna ask him later. He jesse my husband. I meant chris's husband or something. Yes yes i. I just think it's interesting because i really do feel sometimes a little bit after somebody writes. I don't know how you feel john. Somebody writes us like why be x. Person i don't really know if i'm giving them the best advice I can just tell them how. I reached my thing but yeah like absorb as much as you can express your interest to anyone who will listen. I wanna be you know here and hopefully you know not everyone is going to care and take you under their wing. Unfortunately that's the reality but somebody will know somebody will hear what you're interested in that i'll tell you this person or that's and showing expressing that interest but i just think it's awesome that you did know that you wanted to do product development and you just kept on finding away you know that. Make up artists to product of outbursts. Such a cool trajectory. We don't always hear that on fat mascara t tell us more. Let's keep going. Let's keep going into your story. Yes well and and i do have to say like i recognize what a gift it was that i knew that when i was so young. And not everybody's past and so what i do want to say is that first of all. I don't have all the answers. Second of all you're never too young and you're never too old to be who you always be so you can always invites You know you can always change your mind and at the end of the day my wife and my driver is philanthropy that i get to do every single day. Our incredible employees in product development. Like i get to do the thing that i have dreamt of doing my entire life so i feel really blessed awesome. It's very inspiring. You're never too young. Says like twenty eight year olds for you when you when you started your company. Well that's that's the funny thing about the term ceo. I'm such a work in progress right i. i'm. I'm absolutely not oh come on to answer. The question pat started. I believe was twenty-five but please it's a person. Thank you so much. Yeah you know. it's funny. I have really long hair out saving. Cut it for over a year. Oh my gosh. Look the pandemic who and i have always had longer hair in one of the things i love to do as locks of love but i was actually just talking to some of our team members about it. I said you know to me when i when i started writing. Cosmetics is really tried to look older because nobody really took me. I like to wear that right Cut my hair shorter to look more mature. And look more like i could fit in manhattan and everything like that but So so now. Having longer hair is like. I'm by thirties. Now and i can have longer hair but you know it was the. I've made plenty of mistakes an absolutely a work in progress. But it's i've had a lot of grace From from people around me throughout this journey can can. I ask you about when you started this company. I mean from the very beginning you know. Social good was sort of baked into the premise. Right yes can you tell us about why that is if and do you think that's a necessity of every business. These days or was that was that unique. That the time that you did it. So i'm not here to say what other people should do for their business. But i can absolutely say that my y. End what has truly been in. The dna of thrive cosmetics from the very beginning is our philanthropy giving back that we do from the very beginning. When i started the business in two thousand fifteen that every time somebody bought a product we would be giving back and now it's grown bigger than i ever dreamed given over one hundred million dollars worth of products. Now it feels it feels so surreal to say it out loud dollars. Isn't that crazy. But honestly it's thanks to our customers. Our community are giving partners and our boys are are giving powered by our community which you know our employees have a say in who we give back to our customers have a say in how we give back and that's why it's when a say do have like vote. How does that work literally are if you want to tell us a charity that you want us to give back to. You can go on five. Cosmetics dot com and we have a giving page where you could nominate a giving partner. And then we do have internal giving committees. You know in the beginning when it was just a couple of us in a room working together and shipping product and everything like that we mer service all same time as worshiping product of everybody went to every single giving events and We're involved directly with every Charity and we want it now that our company has grown from an employee perspective. We wanna make sure that our employees are still involved so people do have the option of one nominating a charity that they want us to give to whether they're an employee a customer or somebody who's never bought from us but they just in our our community and then also we haven't internal Committee where people any employees no matter what department their engine joined the committee.

Storytellers: Lorraine Hansberry

"Today's storyteller was a playwright and activist. Who stories centered. African american working class families despite tragically short career. She became the first black woman to have a play produced on broadway half a century later her work remains one of the most celebrated snapshots of black struggles and black joy. Here's the story of lorraine hands berry lorraine hands berry was born on may nineteenth nineteen thirty on the south side of chicago. Her father carl. Augustus was a prominent figure. Within the city's black community having founded one of the first african american banks growing up lorraine and her three older siblings played host to a number of famous people including langston hughes. Wabc boys duke ellington and olympic gold. Medalist jesse owens. Despite their middle class status and cultural connections the hands berries were still subject to chicago's deeply ingrained. Housing segregation agreements known as restrictive covenants were widespread throughout the city. White property owners could collectively agree not to sell to african americans. This practice created a ghetto known as the black belt which ran through the south side when lorraine was eight years old. Her father secretly bought a home. In one of the so-called restricted heads in nineteen thirty seven when the family moved in a white mob attacked a brick was thrown through the window narrowly missing lorraine the local homeowners association filed an injunction for the hands berries to vacate lorraine her siblings were chased spat and beaten during their walks to and from school the supreme court of illinois doubled down on the legality of the restrictive covenant. And the hands. Berries were forced out of their home eventually the. Us supreme court overruled this ruling on a technicality. Thirty blocks subsequently opened up to black families across the south side while this ruling and the hands fight did not outlaw restrictive covenants. It did signal. The beginning of the end for the practice lorraine attended. Chicago's englewood high school where she became interested in theatre. She initially attended the university of wisconsin. Where she cut her teeth with the communist party but left after two years in one thousand nine hundred fifty lorraine moved to new york to be a writer by nineteen fifty one lorraine had found a home in harlem and began socializing with many of the great thinkers who had once visited her family back in chicago. She started writing for paul robeson freedom a progressive newspaper at a protest against racial discrimination at new york university lorraine met robert number off a jewish writer. They married at her family home in chicago. In nineteen fifty three in nineteen. Six robert co wrote the hit song. Cindy oh cindy it's prophets allowed lorraine to stop working to focus on writing. She began developing a play that she initially called. The crystal stair langston hughes poem mother to son she would later changed the name to a raisin in the sun. This too was from a langston hughes poem called harlem. What happens to a dream deferred. Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun or faster like a sore and then run a raisin in the sun centers on a black working class family in chicago south side as they try to improve their financial situation. The patriarch of the family has died and a ten thousand dollar insurance payout is imminent they the money to buy a house in the cheaper all white neighborhood nearby to they use it to invest in a liquor store and education lorraine based many of the characters on the families who rented from her father and with whom she attended high school the cast safer one character was entirely black lorraine was in her twenties and the play itself dealt with racism life in chicago's black belt and the pain of assimilation into white culture topics that were considered risky for the predominantly white theater. Going crowd it took over a year to raise enough money to put the play up. When it debuted in nineteen fifty-nine a raisin in the sun was the first play written by a black woman to be produced on broadway and the first to be led by an african american director lorraine was twenty nine years old. The play was an almost instant. Hit the new york drama critics circle named it. The best play of the year just five months after its broadway debut arisen in the son of in london's west end in nineteen sixty one. A film starring much of the original cast was released and several of the actors received golden globe. Nominations perhaps the most important element of the play success was that entailing box stories. Lorraine also make theater accessible and previously unimaginable ways as the writer. James baldwin noted. I had never in my life seen so many black people in the theater and the reason was that never before in the entire history of the american theatre had so much of the truth of black people's lives and seen on the stage. Black people had ignored the theatre because the theatre had always ignored them lorraine would go on to finish in stage. Just one other. Play the sign in sidney bruce. Deans window about a jewish intellectual the play which explored themes of homosexuality and the bohemian lifestyle. Debuted to mixed reviews in nineteen sixty four. It ran for just over one hundred performances closing on january twelfth. Nineteen sixty five. That's same day. Lorraine hanbury died of pancreatic cancer. She was thirty four years old. After lorraine's death. Her ex husband robert had several of her plays produced posthumously to be young gifted and black became an autobiographical work. Drawing on lorraine's letters interviews and journal entries the title came from a nineteen sixty four speech of lorraine's when she spoke to the winners of a united negro fund writing competition. She said speech though. It be thrilling marvellous thing to be merely young and gifted in such times it is doubly so w dynamic to be young gifted and black

"Pay nba parker. I'm a producer here at the cut. But before this humble brag i was a film professor. And i obsessed about every minute beautiful and infuriating thing in film and television to be fair. I still do so. I was recently watching. The netflix. miniseries the queen's gambit because as a former chess club kid. I expected it to be my jam. So i was overjoyed and then befuddled to see the character. Joe lean the protagonists childhood. Bff from the orphanage and black girl. Savior extraordinaire whose entire purpose is to be labeled as difficult while sacrificing huge parts of herself so that the porcelain white girl can play chess and it felt all too familiar to me. It reminded me of this film. I loved as a kid called a little princess dealer. Decent thought i would die till i heard you talk about the magic. I grew up faithfully watching the one thousand nine hundred five version of a little princess by alphonso croissant about a rich orphaned white girl who ends up being a servant all girls school and spencer evenings in the attic with the orphan servant. A little black girl who shares in her daydreams in fantasies but unlike the queen's gambit for this cold where he comes from in a little princess both girls free themselves together and truly become princesses in lace and curls allow to grow up sisters. But still there is this disconnect. The black girls still feels like the friend on the sidelines. Even if she's spunky and nothing awful or bad happens to her. This was the case with a lot of the movies. I grew up on. They all had interruptions of the sweet black sidekick there was also lavender the best friend matilda. It's much better than being out there. And jesse in the babysitters club really an idea might be brilliant. And the most classic example for black kids of the ninety s was a grown man. Lavar burton as star trek. The next generation sweet brainy sidekick jordi la forge computer as we increased our power levels. Was there any counterreaction. Affirmative him but listen. I'm not here to complain. I'm just sort of navigating my way. Through this trope. It is not entirely a bad thing at all as a brainy spunky little black kid i loved these characters. I mean. I needed them. One of the first things. I noticed about the next generation is that they have shorty fords. I remember as a little girl. I had like a brown suede hip band. And i used to put it over my eyes. So i could be jordan forge. George soros outspoken introverted. He makes amazing friends. Went the android on this. And i was like. This guy is still gave the nerve babies though cool that is none other than the actress. Zelda harris. When she was ten years old she played one of these classic sidekick characters jesse the only black babysitter in the baby sitters club. I did not grow up reading the baby sitters club books. I read every single one of those books. Jesse was a dancer who always related to her kids. She learned sign language for one of the kids. She babysat and taught dance. Moves and the film adaptation of the baby sitters club was totally formative for me growing up. Zelda definitely plays the sidekick the supporting role to a host of white girls but she also stole scenes left and right dropping like flies. She kinda had to that was what she was given to work with. Not just in the sitters club but in every role she dishes for. I would be bassey token friend but not necessarily get to read for the lead over and over again. Zelda would hit this wall. She knew her potential by casting directors saw her as the bouncy token friend it starts to wear on you as a kid because you have the power nation. You're working in an industry that can make anything happen. You got competence muppets. Cgi and all this stuff going on who still getting very consistent. Message that you're here to support and so okay Yeah the cameras going to be. Set up right here. You're gonna stand on the side. I'm not sure if you're gonna be in this shot. Whoa having mechanic realization was intense. This realization was extra intense for zelda. Because she knew it didn't have to be this way. She started her acting career in the leading role. Her very first film was spike. Lee's crooked where she starred as troy maybe other people with mommy and scream and yell at you can't do. It wasn't all inclusive set with women and people of color where she had the starring role in black and brown film.

Senators urge Trump to resign; impeachment gains support

"Be removed from office immediately. That's one of the Democrats in the House is calling for an immediate impeachment of President Trump Democrats and some GOP members. Does Echo Spatial Recognition Work?

"Now. This question is from barbara braun and let me at the supper you. She basically says that she has multiple echo devices and she has more than one device respond at once. This is a very common problem and theoretically as barbara says. There's something called eco spatial recognition. That should be in place. So the closest device response to your request or question. That's absolutely right barbara. That is the technology that exists and under perfect circumstances. That's theoretically how it would work but you're right. It's not perfect. And i've experienced before as have many people in our community and so we had a lot of people comment on this. We had william and william had a great idea. This is one of the solutions. And that's this. You are able to name your devices different things so for example you can name your device echo. You can name it Amazon you name it computer and of course you can name it a lax alexi. This is to get around it so that you speak to only one device because it's got a different name the problem with that if it's a problem that's up you to decide is well. You have to remember the different names for the different devices so in theory if they were all named the same the one closest to you should be speaking to you but unfortunately doesn't work like that We also had marlene and jesse Couple of people other comment that this has been an issue for them as well so barbara there you go. The bottom line is yes theoretically. It's supposed to work but it's not perfect in so you either have to put up with that. We're trying naming your devices different names and that should help with that problem all right. Thanks so much for your question. Barbara

COVID-19 pandemic in Guernsey

"Between britain and france were both struggling to contain covid nineteen live channel islets smaller islands. Like alternate herman sark have not had any cases of covid nineteen at all. They're part of what's called the region or bailiwick of guernsey one of the two main channel. Islands the bailiwicks population is just over. Sixty five thousand since one nineteen emerged it has only had three hundred and one cases and just thirteen deaths but the essential point is this since the first wave last spring it basically eliminated the virus. So how did it achieve this. Dr nikola bring and the director of public health for the island's dr bring my first question is how did you spend your new year's eve so i did a combination of two things is i worked but my children also had a party hold on a second women a party. People from outside the household came into the household. Explain this concept to me. What happened absolutely so we have absolutely no internal restrictions in guns talking home. We have no compulsory mask wearing. We can gather an unlimited sizes. We over the summer had a festivals we had. I think the only pride celebration hemisphere towards christmas carol services. We've had large gatherings switching on our christmas lights. Huge christmas day swim. We literally thousands of people. We've done that by. Suppressing the replication of the virus on island. So we don't have any community transmission of sauce coffee to the virus that causes covid. Nineteen at all in ganzi. How did you get to that point. You took a different approach than the mainland of britain so we looked at what was happening in early january and i was concerned that this virus had pandemic potential to me. It was transmitting too easily. And i felt that this was a forest that we needed to watch very carefully so we decided at that stage to go through community test track phrase program so in january through february we trained contact tracers and we started looking at developing our own on ireland testing capacity. We look to have a turnaround time from swab test result by sydney under twelve hours. And we'll start contact tracing within an hour of getting a positive result seven days a week. Twenty four hours a day and so by the time we got our first case on the ninth of march in ghanzi. We were ready and waiting with a fully trained. Contact tracing team and winton to lock down on the twenty fifth of march. And the reason why we went into lockdown was really threefold. We hadn't quite developed our own on testing capacity who actually sending samples to the uk for testing so we were waiting about two three days because of all the transport to get that result we were getting intelligence at that stage that there was something going on in the community from primary care colleagues from jesse department colleagues and we had our first unexplained case of community seating so that was the first time we had a case that we could not link to travel onto the island or contact with a known case and we went into lockdown on the twenty fifth and ten to fourteen days later we absolutely flattened the curve and we then reached the stage. We were actually virus free. We came out of locked on on the twentieth of shoe route through to absolutely no on ireland restrictions whatsoever but we have retained border restrictions. The strategy that you took is the elimination strategy which is different than elsewhere particularly in the mainland britain. What is the elimination strategy. How would you sum that up. So our aim was to suppress the virus to a level that it didn't impact on our health care services. We actually exceeded what we want to do. And we're able to eliminate stop community transmission of the virus now. The advantage of that for us is that we've been able to open up on tunnel economy over the summer and indeed into christmas are restaurants have been full. People aren't about they've been shopping. So that's been extremely helpful but also from a point of view of of looking at people's mental health and wellbeing is able to be asked about people will able to visit their family owned and

The law department is now drafting a civil complaint that will be filed in the circuit court of Cook County, the law department will file the suit in the near future as a part of this legal action. The lot apartment will pursue the full measure of damages allowed under the ordinance. My first reaction when I heard that they were charging him for this was like, well, you know, as much as we know jussie small is guilty because all the available evidence is abundantly clear. It does seem a bit weird that somebody who wasn't actually prosecuted and convicted would have to foot the Bill for a law enforcement's efforts. Like of seems like in our system, you should actually be found guilty of something first before you have to pay up. But the case the police are making here is okay corrupt prosecutor notwithstanding. This guy really did cost us a hundred thirty thousand dollars. It was a prank that he pulled against the city of Chicago. We're going to file it in court. This lawsuit will have its day in court and in in a different way. You may actually have an opportunity for the for the case in a civil complaint for the for the city to basically try Jesse small for his fraud, by way of this lawsuit. And I think it's reasonable for the city to one it's money back from him. Yeah. That's a good point. I had the same reaction as you when they were trying to charge him for this setting sort of a dangerous precedent. Perhaps that anyone who? Launched his requests a police investigation. And they don't find the perpetrator in accused the person making it up will they be responsible for the cost of that investigation. Even if they were actually telling the truth, but the fact that more of this evidence the case against jussie smollet could come out in a civil case is good, especially considering what seems to amount to cover up by the prosecutor who initially claimed that he had already done his do community service to pay for his hoax, and then later tried to pin it on the police department. "Against TV actor Jesse small ad for staging a hate crime attack against himself. However, Chicago PD say they stick by their investigation. And mayor Rahm Emanuel, not happy a whitewash of Justice. Let's dig into it with NBC News Radio is Michael Bauer. Michael good morning. Is this kind of thing typical in a case like this. I would say it's probably more typical than we think. But it's not. Not that you have this high profile case this celebrity cases spotlight on Chicago. Like you've had here in regards to this. We had the police superintendent Eddie Johnson out in front of cameras the day. Smaller was arrested not only listing the laundry list of charges against him. But almost sounding as if he were creating the opening statements for the case, the lawsuit the prosecution against Jesse small Ed, and that may have played a role into why the prosecution felt like they couldn't get more from this case. But that said sixteen of those charges you pointed out drop yesterday in the -mergency court hearing, and we don't know why. Because they have sealed the case at this point in time, the attorney for small Ed says they did not strike any kind of deal with prosecutors that they walked into this meeting said, hey, we think you should drop the case. And prosecutors are like, yeah, we think you're right. And then they said, and you know, what let's seal this case up, and they said you're too for two today. Let's do that. And then he forfeited his ten thousand dollar bond voluntarily that doesn't sound like somebody who's exonerated or innocent. It's attorneys say it was not the city gets ten grand small. That doesn't go to jail that feels like a pay for play doesn't it? Right. The only thing outside of some sort of a deal would be possibly an indication. The prosecution didn't think they were going to be able to make their case. Did they did they not have the proper evidence that they thought they would have or wasn't strong enough or could they not prove that small at orchestrated this attack? Or or was this a case where legitimately they had concerns about the fact that Chicago PD got right out there in front of the cameras, and may have tried to plead their case in the court of public opinion, and could that be seen as an overstep on behalf of the PD? Or maybe there was remember the two brothers that supposedly got paid thirty seven hundred dollars for small at did they recant did they not have a plea agreement or an immunity deal where they not going to testify any of those things would certainly hamper prosecution's case, and maybe those or any combination therein or reason why they decided to drop these charges back to the two brothers smell attorneys maintain. He was the victim. And the perpetrators were those two brothers who told police that the actress stage the attack so does that mean the states? We didn't have to water down our action at all we removed him from every single committee. I think it's an action that people would celebrate throughout the country. The difference. "Boy, I don't know about you. But I've been feeling like it was Friday for the last couple of days. I felt like yesterday. I felt like it was Friday today. I felt like it was Friday. It's only Thursday. But either way I'm glad to be here. Glad to have you here with me as well. I think I'm also glad to be able to say. The the Jesse small lead story is over not over over. Because I know we still have to hear his side. We still have to hear why he did allegedly all the things that he is accused of doing. But I think so much has swirled around this story. I was thinking about it this morning when I saw those to the national morning shows are leading their lead story was the fact that Jesse small was in police custody, and I was thinking I do watch the show empire. So I knew exactly who he was from the moment he came forward and said he had been attacked assaulted. I knew who he was I knew his character was on empire. I knew all of that. But I wondered how many other people even knew his name before this whole thing happened. I had a brief back and forth. You know, how you deal with mardi Griffin. You have a back and forth. I said Marty Griffin the other day, but he's a big star. He doesn't have to do this. Attention. And Marty said he is not a big star. He actually said my wife is the only person who watches him. And the more. I thought about that. The more. I thought there there probably why something to that. Yes. There is a specific group of people that knows who he is because of this show empire. But in terms of America dot com or the world how many people actually know who he is. So he really isn't a big star. But now everybody knows who he is. Everybody knows his name. You know, a lot of times there used to be a saying all the time. And it was you know, any publicity is good publicity. I'm I never believed that I never bought into that. But I do know when you are in that life when you when you travel in that lane just having people talk about you is a big deal having people, you know, having your name trend on social media is a big deal show. I don't know if that's what Jesse small it was after when he started down this road. I don't know. I'm not sure what the motivation wise, we may not ever even know what the motivation wise, but what I do know is that everybody at least now knows his name. And now he's in police custody. And the sad thing is I think that whatever the motivation was behind all of this. It's more detrimental than it is positive. I think it is a perfect app. Opportunity for anyone with a a racist bone in their body to come out on either side and say see that's what people do. That's what people do they blame us. They've, you know, I just think and then of course, there are those victims those those legitimate victims of some type of hate crime on that won't be believed going forward when they come forward with their story. They won't be bullied so. I'm just thinking that this is one of those, and you know, nothing good comes out of any of this. Sadly, we're kinda stack with the story as it is. But we'll learn more Jesse small now in police custody. I imagine hate crimes new study out of the southern poverty Law Center. We're going to talk with them in. Let's see in our next hour. We're going to talk with them in our next hour. But in this half hour, we're actually going to speak with marimba Malayan. She's from the hill district CDC, you've probably either heard on the radio television or seen in the paper that they the shop and save the much-heralded shop and save in the hill district is going to be closing its doors sometime in the near future. Big meeting in the hill district tonight to bring the community up to date on where that stands and then the peel back the layers peel back layers, what happened why didn't it work? What can be done for the future for as long as the neighborhood fight to get a grocery store. It's now back to square. One some six years later. What happened? Why is it hard to sustain a grocery store there? I think there's a lot of blame to go around. There are a lot of moving parts to that. Obviously, we can't cover it all, but we'll get some highlights with marimba Malayan. She's coming up in just a few minutes. And then what else are we going to talk about today? Boy, I feel like I'm I'm Debbie Downer today, you know, the number of young women twenty five to thirty four having heart attacks is on the rise. Why is that we have so much stress in our lives notice? They say our like I'm in that age group twenty four to thirty five. But I like I like saying our because I'm a woman claimed that part of it.
