Not doing anything stupid and maintaining your body to show up to Goto work Every single day. You mentioned Cal Ripken, You know, that's the way the game was played years ago. Now it's different. You know, we have training staffs and people telling us when we need off days, but at the same time You an individual. You need to know what you need to dio to execute your job and stay healthy and nobody knows it like the person himself so Hats off to him its longevity to hit that many homeruns. He's been a great player in this game of baseball. I'm very happy for him and he was happy to. It was a nice genuine smile. I know he was happy, too. I just got a text. A text from Auggie Jose, August Seal. Hey, says he loves to show he's listening, says Haida Woe and he's going to get your glove at third base Beacon Bend down a little better. Well, we love Auggie. Auggie. How you doing? I'll give you a call later, Augie. Yeah, We've been in contact. You're in there. He's helped running that thing up there in Sacramento. Of course. "You're talking baseball with Marty Laurie on themed sports leader. All right. We've got a lot coming up. Hey, Bridge Bank. As I said yesterday, they've helped me with so many different things in business. Sheetal Cordova and Fred Voss and Jesse Garcia, Mike Letterman and Esperanza Que Ela, Mauricio Grant and everybody else, Rebecca Over there Bridge Bank in Oakland and thank you so much guys fans. If you want to really banking experience and a good one bridge bank, check him out Member of the F B, I C and, of course, the Western Alliance bank family Now we're going to bring in a good friend of ours. Formally did the TV work for the Miami Marlins and the Seattle Mariner pre game show and has been on MLB TV and all sorts of things and Really a good baseball man. And I always enjoy our Sunday morning chats with him. And that is our good friend. Rich waltz rich. Good morning. How are you? Hum, Are you? It is a good morning. It's ah, It's the first morning in about a week. Where you at least for me, Wake up. And you turn on your phone and you look quickly at social media or the wires or whatever you want to call it, and there's no new cases, no teams. No new teams affected. So keep your fingers crossed that holds for awhile. Yeah, Look, you spend a lot of time in Miami on Obviously the Marlins a team that's been hit the hardest. What's your take on that? And where does it go for the Marlins? Well, um we'll start with the last question. First. It's This effects. Um, I mean this affect everybody right in in the National League, because Suddenly, the Marlins have to add 18 players and they're not going to promote their top prospects. They don't want to start the clock on some of these guys, so they're literally signing. Ah guys that are loose that are free agents bring up, um, stopgap guys from from Triple A and you know, going to have a go at it. Good news for them is that Players that were infected have been quarantined and there are no it doesn't sound like any serious symptoms. And they rest of the team That's been quarantined as well has had no positive tests, so they're they're goingto was own playing early next week, which is which is great news, but no number the format here, and that's that's the most important news. But how it affects the rest of the National League. Remember the playoff format this year? What is the three division winners? Three second place? Ah, get in and then a two Essentially wild cards. So all of a sudden the teams in the East Are going to be playing, and then it effects obviously, Americans because you're playing interleague ahs well, They're going to be playing this Miami team that you know, it was actually off to a Decent start and had some good young players. Ah, they're going to be facing a somewhat of a rag tag Bunch here for the next you would think to the three weeks at least. Especially a team that's been shut down for 7 to 10 days, Um, that that could have trickle down effect in terms of teams trying to get to the postseason through that back door of the two wild cards. The two best records left over in the league by Good Point Rich waltz with us on this Sunday morning. Just watching a little bit of MLB TV. I guess Joey Votto. Chris Brian had some symptoms, so we'll see where that goes. Look, we had Eric Nadelen yesterday, his engineer and on radio partner tested positive and now Erickson quarantine as well. How about that? Yeah, look, and it's everywhere. It's not just baseball. Obviously, it's the entire the entire world the entire country. Every industries is affected by this. Baseball's given you taking their best shot at getting it done. And this you're going to have a situation like this. You just hope that none of the None of the illnesses that result in this result in you know the worst case scenario. You grew up in the Bay Area. It's 30 years of crew Can Skype on DH. I know that you respect them, and you listen to them for years. And as I have a cz. Well, maybe some of your thoughts are crooked Skype. Well, look, First of all there the gold standard in the game not only with their fans in the Bay area but also other broadcasters. You know, when I started doing games in Seattle and with ESPN and And moved down to Miami and started doing games with with the Marlins. That was a show that I always would watch because of just the incredible chemistry and the vibe that they have. And then he looked that show itself. The giant telecast is it goes deeper than Krupeckaite Mean? Jeff and Jim in the truck. Any G It always interests me having grown up there, having watched a lot of there there games from afar. That show always felt captures the vibe of the Bay Area it captures with the Bay Area, and especially Giants fans were about But then the more I thought about it, it's like, well, it almost feels a sum point with cooking type have been there for 30 years. Maybe the the show set the vibe for Giants fans. And the rest of the Bay Area there. It's I had a chance. Ah, couple years ago, two things I got to work with crook on some games. MLB network. And then I got to fill in for the Giants, Person games, and one of the things that I did was I hung out around the booth and around the team for about five days before my game just to come up to speed with what's going on with the team,.

M. B. R. S. GI into postgame your talking baseball with Marty Laurie on the sports leader it's great to have you back with us on this Saturday evening as we talk some baseball with cordon with Meyer and Cordy is been on the show for many years from NBC sports Chicago covers the cubs and the white Sox have time to time he's been on the twins meet from time to time no we love talking ball with him Gordy how are yeah I'm doing great Marty this scene safe the family is doing well I hope the same for you yeah yeah I'm down here in Arizona and as I said I'm in mesa former home of the cubs but but you know it's kind of wrapping up a little bit down here we we've got some a little bit of the baseball fever coming up and I was glad to get you on today first of all your thoughts about just where we are in general in baseball and now how you're dealing with the with the summer so far well as far as being a sports writer who covers baseball during a baseball season it's not being played that's been a bit of a challenge you know I've got a I've got a better than most I I can use the phone in and get some work done as opposed to some of these other people who who are and worst parts of the economy right now so you know I count my blessings that way yeah but mostly just kind of checking in with people following up on news in an see more at on some things and also trying to reach people see other stand ready and and we are just trying to cover as much as there is to cover and waiting for what looks like and I think probably an inevitable started here in in less than two months yeah looks like a garden Whitmire with those of NBC sports Chicago Gordy do we think we'll see baseball in Chicago that's an issue of course in California as well what event in Chicago well you know we're we're we're on lockdown is not really the right word but there's never stayed home were still in place here and we're we're still getting out a hot spot and an active spot for this virus show that both the governor and the mayor of Chicago have been pretty proactive Monessen pretty aggressive in trying to stay on top of that so we would definitely be probably some more political dealings it's not hurdles to overcome here than there might be in a safe place like mortars on where the the political authorities there and haven't already suggested publicly that they welcome sports opening up again so he didn't get back to the original question do I do I think that will happen I do think so I think there's a good relationship between the sports owners here in the attorneys here and I think that eighteen sure some of the precautions and safety practices that we've seen in these these reports that have come out of date yes I didn't under those fairly strict circumstances that they would allow the the stadiums here to function well be an interesting scenario as we go through the summer with service time for players especially players who could become free agents Kris Bryant being one of them he's been in the news you've written about Chris Brian and how this may impact him you Darvish spoke out the this past week about what's going on potentially twenty twenty bring us up to date on those two yeah well would cruise planners I talked with scoreboards his agent and I had an idea probably the way the way they were thinking anyway but it seems to me that he's a guy when it comes to the economics of the game moving forward people might have the most questions about yeah there is already cream pretty widely perceived notion that he was gonna become a created when eligible after twenty twenty one despite the efforts at least a few years ago to try to get him to agree to an extension on that ship seems to have pretty thoroughly sailed but and the economic strange that I wanted to to to get that from the horse's mouth even though I kind of had an idea what the answer might be and it was about what I expected he's got horses mine and I'm not I'm not gonna sit here and say he's wrong we we definitely know that we definitely know where he is on on any side of an agenda when and where what he has at stake but he suggests that the more elite free agents in any market the ones that would be up for those longer term contracts with contracts six six plus years would be the ones that you can do the most if elation where around whatever economic suggests so if you knew if you plan to be competitive in a fairly near term and this guy was on the mark you need for your club you can structure a a high end deal that would compensate in the short term to what might be some short term negative economic impact is that loading the dealer or or putting you know or roller coaster in the contract where you'd expect revenues to be it's a shorter term guys the one your guide to two and three year guys David Morris and I think other people here are probably going to be the ones most at risk being in any market over the next two years very good going on with my with this from NBC sports Chicago you wrote about him this week to Darvish was a guy I actually wrote about regarding the corona virus before anybody else in spring training you're right I mean it was the week that Major League Baseball sentence mammal can teams wouldn't you know it was a win the cruise ship off the coast of Japan was was in the news a lot and it looked like the corona virus was it it was sort of undeniable might globally well it was it was in a place where it was gonna start impacting everybody including us here even even some of us who may have been in real close attention to it so I'm I was thinking you know better you know and I would listen these guys Hey Chris branch and have a baby here pretty soon do you Darvish who's the guy who the issue is from Japan and there's a lot of people in Asia where we just were a lot of reports came out of this so I talked to him in the first thing he said was honest I'm scared it so I'm worried about this he he he got to spring training early and immediately went to the club officials and said Hey look I'm worried about reporters who come over from Japan and what my time then and I different level of media access in some of the other players here can you keep me safe I want to know that you can keep me safe from this corona virus so I know I can keep my family safe and when I talked to him in March that first week of March he had not heard back yet from anybody that does that there were any insurances and he lacks that I'm worried about this it was not not two or three days later he was scheduled to pitch he showed up to the ball park and had a cough didn't get out of his car texted into the building had a doctor come and the doctor soon down the road to get tested when he tweeted from the doctor's office he was basically getting tested for corona virus because he was worried about bringing in the past on a course that set up headlines norm and but Twitter storms and then two days later he pitches because he got cleared but that was all a precursor to what unfolded literally day by day until less than a week later everything got shut down so what when it comes to you Darvish when you saw this past week when he tweeted out basically a response to some of the some of the reaction to convene so it's suppose in revenue sharing that yet aspen the union from then I'll be and some of the backlash against players for even considering all something to discuss he's coming out of from a place where he was one of the guys that did it was concerned about this from the beginning and understand it we had a very very heightened awareness of the risk that the players are taking in this process as soon as they walk on to any of those deals as soon as they he hadn't yet whatever for transportation I couldn't start heading to do whatever they have to go back to work there's going to be risk built into everything they do and by the way there's not nearly the testing available even even if they're able to get this deal done with this Utah outlet to do what they want to do and certainly not to do what they wanna do without taking resources with the general public so honestly I I don't know how they play that went great great summary great summary Gordon Whitmire with this absolutely read him online Cordy the owners a sort of laid down the gauntlet here to renegotiate the hundred seventy million and delay picking a fight with the players and now you you've given a good foundation probably to the answer well what about between the owners and players now yeah this is all on the owner's name and by the way the owners the last CBA put into affect like your tax levels that were artificially low compared to revenues of time projected revenues I think we can all look back on that and agree with that now certainly the union has awakened to that fact it was it it was a dumb game for the union to sign that deal it was they did not have the best negotiators ironing out that that deal and what happened was one of the one of the follow up to that deal was those awful free agent markets we saw not this past one but the two before that that resulted in for the first time ever since the sixties when the union began keeping track of this stuff the average salary for players in baseball dropped back to back years and for only the second and third times ever it had nothing to do with the labor stoppage so we use on a bad contract but the owners were able to and you go she's a good man good for them at a time of record revenues and skyrocketing franchise values but then they turned around and leveraged into what amounted to sour expression instead of a slow growth in salaries most Latin salaries they literally suppressed hours hours literally went down and back because because those are the free agent market a lot of players who don't have some of the more born since the ninety four ninety five blackouts right I have no concept of labor strife at elite level hello some of them to to how the owners have historically operated in player relations and they started dropping words like strikes you heard the word strike dropped in clubhouses across baseball the last two years that's that is a foolish site compared with the owners there is no need to they were already making more money in fact they were already make more money relative to to everything they were spending so is so is that spending on players was not keeping pace with the revenues they were making more money than they ever have in their lives so why would you wouldn't pick that fight there's a union was fat and happy but you picked a fight now when we were already gearing up for a flight over the next CBA a real life emergency comes into play and then in March you negotiate pro rated salaries in the union says yeah that's reasonable play half the season we get half the money yeah I would totally agree with it let's do that now they want to go back to them and say well look because we we believe we're going to incur more losses then we're maybe on the table.

"So we made an effort when we learned of this program we figured this is something that could really help our clients so we made an effort ahead of the game to really kind of set up our process and and get people focused on it and and what happens is is the main cast at yeah receive an application from a business small business and there has to be certain information and certain documentation and we get that all put together and ultimately we submitted to the FDA and if accepted we get get a low number and that means bone that company has dollars allocated for them and that number is based on their payroll is what they're doing with the the government's after what they want to get obviously want to get more dollars out flowing through businesses but in in specifically to keep people employed and and help with their payroll so what happens then is the bank has to get those dollars funded out to the companies within ten days and as you said this initial three hundred and forty nine billion was that it started on April third that the banks could start submitting for that and I think it lasted about nine calendar days and the dollars ran out and so there were still a lot of small businesses lined up looking for it and and so Congress now has approved a second round of I believe it's three hundred and ten billion more through a secondary the same program and it's and it's not yet available but I believe it's either Monday or Tuesday that it will become available and we have more applications lined up that will be submitting as well all the banks and you know some of the banks stumbled a little bit and and may not necessarily totally their fault is it because the program you know it happened quickly and so you know there was some changes there are some nuances and and certain you know you have to make sure you get it right as you said or you know the elderly if it's rejected they go back to the end of the line so we ended up doing I believe I believe in the first round we did about twenty seven hundred loans totaling about a billion and a half dollars just from our you know our bank which you know we are basically California Nevada Arizona based bank well well it's great to have a very good explanation very clear you know the people in those years that I mentioned then if they'll Marie I know she works so hard Sheetal Mike letterman who handles many of the tech companies we've talked about him taking companies to the next level and Jesse Garcia baseball guy down who works with you then in San Jose so you've got so you've got a good staff what's with this we've got a major league staff Maria today we had people working twelve hour plus days including the weekends for you know roughly three straight weeks and the initial kind a week before the program to to.

So our first pitch is by Jesse Garcia from Toews. Zuta T Z U D A, welcome Jesse. Thank you like Elizabeth said my name is Jessie Garcia, and I'm the CEO and founder of Tisza at his Yuda. We design manufacture and sell head impact sensors for concussion awareness. What I love about our product is how simple it is attached to any helmet that you already own and it changes colors from clear to bright red. If you've gotten hit at a potentially concussive force level, what's novel about our patented technology is that it works without electron IX. So it's all mechanical no need for wifi battery bluetooth. It's always on. So it's always capable of detecting forces and impacts in any direction because of this solution. It allows us to be the most affordable head impact sensor on the Mark. Which was something. I was really passionate about I was a clear rugby player who got tackled during a game. And my coach didn't realize I was hurt until three days later when she was watching the video footage, and because of that I suffered from post concussion symptoms for close to six months where I couldn't read I had headaches all the time. And I tried to find something on the market. There was a two hundred dollar mouthguard that I simply couldn't.

"Miller lights Packers playbook here WGN GM. Jesse garcia. Jeff Falconio with you as well. So some of the names will two names, we know that they have interviewed Chuck Pagano, and Jim Caldwell. You mentioned a defensive minded coach. And I know this isn't to say defense, I guess in general because we know sure offense is a big part of the league now. But still you look at some of the previous champions. They still have a good defense. And that's not to say, you don't like Baltimore Ravens defensive minded. This is how we're doing things. But I do wonder we're kind of seeing this in all sports now, I think there's some similarities with the with the NBA with the boom in three point shooting as well. You've started to see some teams try and say, okay, you know, what it's becoming an arms race here. How can we differentiate ourselves here and find something new to do? I wonder when we're going to see more of a change in the NFL as well where you say offense at Mina game. But not so much. How do we become the defense that you're used to watching in the nineties and early two thousands? But how do we slow this down and become a defensive team that goes against those trends, the the thing that really struck me excuse me, what really struck me going back like six years ago was that defense is we knew are getting much smaller and much faster. So isn't someone gonna come along at some point knowing the importance of the quarterback and say, let's get some big uglies upfront, and we are going to run the football. Well, they long and the patriots kind of did that I know you, and I talked about it earlier this year that you wondered if the patriots were going to be that team this year again New England did it with Lou Garrick blunt the year was I guess it was twenty fourteen well even this year too. I mean, I know part of it was roster massaging, but they opened the regular season. I think three wide receivers on the fifty three man. Well, yeah. But they had as you pointed out they had some some issues of varying degrees at that position. But it never really panned out. I it just seemed like I was just waiting for some team to break the mold and it just really didn't happen in New England. Even after that twenty fourteen year. I don't think they really worries physical in running the football. At least it felt that way. So yeah, that's what I mean. There's just been it's almost gotten to the point of extreme when you look at the chiefs, and you look at the Rams the saints and the offense that these teams are getting the numbers that they're putting up, but then you also have to understand think of just. I got to put some of it on the rules. Right. I it's just so difficult to play defense and what everybody was saying early in the season that you can't even at the quarterback now without getting flagged. So how in the world? Can you win a Super Bowl with a really really good defense? And when I say that I mean winning with defense. Okay. And I go back to the Chicago Bears. And yes, Khalil Mack has made that defense better. And he's a great player, but they already had a good defense in place for them to make the jump from five and eleven two division champions. They needed to get a lot of mileage out of Mitch Trubisky. And they followed the eagles Rams blueprint of after that rookie year. Let's surround our guy with talent. So you're saying the bears won that trade in the long run. And and short-term. Well, who knows because those first round picks could turn out to be ten year. All pro guys. I I mean. By the way, I'm kidding. For those out there who don't understand what we're talking about. I just keep waiting for somebody to try because. Sooner or later, there's going to be a breaking point where unless we just keep going offense offense offense in the game. You saw between the Rams and the chiefs that's going to become the norm. A few years down the line. But theoretically, if you're looking to say, you know, what let's just take an analytical approach here. And let's see how we can best set. Ourselves up and stand out here. Would it be a run heavy team for a couple of reasons for one you're controlling? The time game. They're throwing the clock. But also. If you do that. And if you have a quarterback that isn't necessarily an Aaron Rodgers Tom Brady, and I know you touched on the model, and the reason why a lot of these teams find success or the Rams and the hawks where you have that quarterback on rookie contract, you can spend money elsewhere. If your offense is controlling the ground game and winning. They're sure it's probably gonna cost you down the line with those running backs. But. Paying running backs versus quarterbacks. That's got to be an advantage there too. College football has been the forerunner of the NFL over the last ten years. I mean, you saw athletic tight ends split out more often than not spread offense. Read option all of these things have seeped into the NFL level. For all the offense that is put up in college football. Who are the two teams that have consistently won over the last few years? And what do they do? Well. Well, it depends on the ask. But the two teams I'm assuming you're looking for clubs in an L. And what do they do? Shawn watson. But. Even go back a few years before that Ohio State. Poland Bose's out of the wazoo. Those teams play good defense. This year people are saying Alabama could be the greatest collection. Greatest college will why. Because for the first time ever. Nick Sabin has a legitimate quarterback. He won a national championship with Jake Coker. You're saying Greg McElroy was not illegitimate quarterback. That is exactly what I'm saying. Neither was I was never a believer in AJ McCarron or Blake SIMS. Or the guy who ended up in Atlanta for a couple of years. He had three names it escapes me. John Parker Wilson bay. Yeah. Jalen hurts. But I mean, even hurts was sort of trending until right? The Sean watching from clubs, and it comes to this had some very good offensive talent. But they've won with defense. Alabama wins every year with defense. So. Okay. On that front you'd say well for all of the offense that you see in college football, you still need a good defense to win. And and that's why you know. Let's see how the the postseason plays out. I am not a I I I love watching the chiefs play. I'm just not a believer in that team. Because of the fact that how do you trust that defense? You just can't count on just outscoring everybody every week at some point you have to make a stop some point. You have to make a stand. And to a lesser degree. I would say the same thing about the Rams. Which then makes you wonder. Could the bears the bears Texans Super Bowl? I mean. It's possible. And then you start thinking we would have a lot of crow pizza's going around that myself and a few other people. Yes. Bears and the super thanking yourself, can you really lead in a sing along right on Michigan avenue, some lose which well Ashton near the Chicago guys. Where would we go for that? I'm Donald guy, of course. That are gino's DMZ. Yeah. A little loses this show exactly loses not top of my list. If you save friend of the show, we'll just start sending me stuff. Interesting. I haven't been fully fleshed it out. But it's a it's a working. You'd be surprised though. What what happens when you say something there was a situation many years ago in this very studio where I just had offhandedly said, I'm hungry. And I remember that I brought you a bag of chips. No, you don't remember that. This is before you were working here. Even though you claim to have been here since two thousand three, but there was a couple who were driving around listening. They they were enjoyed the show. They brought chicken, and how did you know, these people? I didn't I didn't know that they they came to the to the east gate over here. They say we heard you were hungry. Here you go. That's interesting. Feeling pretty hungry to I mean been here. Four hours now doesn't work. If you got another hour and a half inch.

"Giants pitchers had a total of seven strikeouts. One last look at the. Toyota, out-of-town scoreboard. They have gone to the eighth inning. Now at Wrigley field. The cubs leading the cardinals ten to five and for the cubs. Garcia, Jesse Garcia who's been doing some closing for them as come on. And they may be hoping that he'll take them to the final two innings of that game. Spring training twenty nineteen we'll begin in late February here we are at the end of September. So not quite five months away from the first cactus league game of next year. And we'll have it right here on the K A B R giants radio network. So stay tuned for your local listings, and it's a very early game. Again, this year, maybe February the twenty third somewhere in there as they again will try to get the season started a a little bit earlier than they have in the past as they did this past spring show, many changes in the offing for this off season after a very disappointing finish. And although the giants stayed right around five hundred and stayed in the mix until maybe mid to late August, and we're still at five hundred at the end of August after BUSTER Posey's a hip surgery and the trade of Andrew mccutchen, finally, the the lack of depth, really. Was too much to overcome. The giants finished up only five and twenty one in the month of September. And averaged less than three runs a game in the month of September. And before the game I asked Bruce Bochy to tell us. Hey, if you make what the the new general manager whenever he comes in. And he asks you, what is the the number one thing, you know, the number one need that you would tell the the new GM is fair to say we need to improve this offense Mansa story. What we've done the second half and how anemic or offense is Bannon spent pretty much all year. And we gotta get better there. Take some pressure off these pitchers of pitching actually did a pretty good job despite us having our injuries. But that's an area. I think where we needed to most the giants average less than four runs a game for the season. Are they scored fewer runs this year than last year? The. The the nightmarish season. And so that is the clear-cut need for the giants has enunciated by manager Bruce bocce. So we'll see how this off season plays out. And one thing is for sure whatever happens we will be looking forward to visiting with you from the cactus league from Scottsdale stadium in February against around the twenty third or so should be the first cactus league game upcoming in twenty nine thousand nine John Miller for Dave Fleming.
