Richard McSpadden from AOPA on how he got into aviation

"Where did your first interest in aviation start off? Yeah. It came really from my dad when my dad turned it was roughly in in his forties early forties. My mom gave him a present of a flight lesson off and he took that I was about high school college at the time. And he immediately took to it. He just loved it as my mom knew he would and I watched him go through that and saw the planning at the kitchen table and all that and I thought man that that looks like a lot of fun and he encouraged me through the years kind of nudge me to look at flying you thought I would enjoy it thought I would you know be good at it and I'm really thankful that he did that's kind of where it came a little bit late for me in life. But that's kind of where it came from that is a little bit later than most people we talked about. I one of my good friends in college that he was the same way. He entered ROTC with me and his whole goal was I think he wanted to be a lawyer in the Air Force song You Had a scholarship in for like English or something cuz you did really well in school and he decided that he thought this flying thing would be super cool. So 18 plus years later. He still find fighters on active duty package. So I think maybe there's something to it for those of you who are trying to go that route maybe delay that passion. I gotta do this. I gotta do this you won't put as much pressure on yourself and wage. Actually grow into a little bit better and next thing, you know, you're the you're the lead of the of the Thunderbirds. So we've us through just how you're active duty career piece together to get you to kind of where you are, New Jersey. Yeah. So I was ROTC like you were and came out of University of Georgia and went to Advanced Air Force Base in Enid Oklahoma and back that time, you know, you everybody flew to 37th and then everybody Flutie 38 sand somewhere in there. They would decide they had to be far qualified and they would take like whatever persuasion they would make that far qualified and if you made that cut you were able to choose what you want to go fly next. I think they do a lot differently now, but and then it was it was a pretty brutal process everybody knew your rank order of the class and that was publicized well known and they would put the airplanes up that were available and you know pilot number one in the class. What do you want and need to look at the list of all the classes and birth Take whatever class he wanted and our our airplane and then you know on the number two number two, what do you want? Right so through that process. I got very fortunate and I flew the F-15. That's the place. I really wanted to fly. And from there. I flew and kadena and came back and did Holloman Air Force Base for a long time was the F-15 demo pilot for a while really enjoyed that bath and then moved to the ranks. Like a lot of people went back to the schoolhouse top there in the F fifteen for a while fluid Langley for a while and then moved onto the Thousand Birds, you know about about the time. I I think I was an Ops officer at Tyndall and release came out about okay. It's time to hire a new round of Thunderbird pilots. And one of them this year's team lead position. If you're an operations officer and you meet all these calls and you're interested, you know, put your package in and so that's kind of you know in short where my career went. I did have that middle stint. You know when you're on active duty job. Want you to do the career broadening thing. Oh, yeah, and so, you know rightfully so my boss was really trying to look out for my career and he was pushing me to go to the Pentagon and take a staff to her and just thought he didn't want to do that. So I went and found my my own little assignment flying King airs in the Philippines and just had a ball doing that my wife and I went we were I was an assistant at a shame that we had three King airs in the Philippines at the time. So my job was to sort of manage that Fleet and be the chief sort of instructor of you know, the 06 has and the other people that would apply to King air bag and that was just an absolute ball. I just I can't say enough about the king you are and what a fantastic airplane that is you say stuff like that and that makes me go. Yeah, I I've had friends who've done similar type jobs, right and I always say man. I just I learned about all these things the day after I make a decision and go for something else. Made a handshake agreement that we are going to buy a house in New Jersey. Yeah before twenty, two, twenty one. Something like three months. For you that's like two days. We have three months and a lot of renovations to go here. And we that means we're GONNA have to make a lot more money than we planned on in order to buy house. So I don't know how we're going to do it, but we shook on it, and the thing is we're not getting an expensive house i WanNa get like a barn with a bunch of land and just make it livable. Almost a tiny home vibe, but it's just super like you live with. The when you say a barn I pictured a gigantic thing like, do you mean like? A cottage just really chill. Yeah. Not Expensive Not Affleck's something for me and for my soul because like. Part of me is in Jersey and it's always going to be their. Home get in touch with me and it's It makes me I think a better person we so like Yeah man when you get cut off, he's barking up five times in a row comes out as a mon. Yes. I'll wait I'm on I can't. Stop you stop because I'm. Not GonNa say Barn Yeah no I just feel like really in touch with WHO I am when I'm in Jersey and I think that every five weeks every six weeks it'd be nice if get back to Jersey being my own environment, get a little reset and then come back out here hungering ready to go and to ready to my goals Finance Mike I can't stay in. Jersey. Because lifestyle there is a little bit too slow for me for what I want the things I'm trying to make in the goals and trying to achieve but like A. It's essential in allowing me to sustain myself and my mental health, my health, just like my malicious, my family like I need I need to be there more often. So having a hub there, it would be nice because. Lesson, we were there. We landed with a bunch of people in the right model. Can we stay in wheel on the floor and like we're all over my mom's shit and not that my mom isn't welcoming. It's just I. Don't want to be over her her life when I go there. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's good. Spot that's next step. I also, WANNA. Get married there. So. You drop that location. You'RE GONNA have to figure I'm location scouting. Okay. So you want get me would you get married on your own land I want to know in order to get married you have to have A. Wife Working on something. All right. Hey Jim. Jim some time. Some time. Yeah Yeah. Yeah. Okay Yeah. Are you? Yeah. Yeah. I will say though just to touch on I was getting ready to do. That I realized spending time in Jersey now is like I didn't appreciate it when I was growing up at all I guess it's like impossible to appreciate your hometown because all you know when you're growing up. Yeah but. I like to. This rule that kind of. Came up with myself for myself. Okay which is. Spend enough time in Jersey to Miss La. And then spent enough time in La to Miss Jersey smart. So I think I think you think you think that you're trying to talk but it's not this I. Think the rule should be spent enough time in Jersey. It's my role for myself to to need kissel.

richard ooh yeah so this is a boop tackler show that we're having tonight you know what i'm you know our show is presented now it feels good to be presented have you ever been presented ritchie i don't know if i've ever actually been presented now it's new well this is you know we're presented dislike that presented by south jersey beer scene in south jersey we're seeing dot com the blood right there because we we have a good show tonight of course the other voice you hear and the stentorian tones opening our show is richard rubik hello how are you today sir i'm fantastic yeah that's where having a good evening here afford tonight and our guests that we have with us tonight you know sometimes people organ or or things are known just by initials back in the old classic rock days you'd see us NY in the eighty s and ninety she had our EM and in the beer were rolled everyone in new jersey knows nj see big and so we have here with us the creator founder of nj CB you might give ovitz hey guys i'm here that's the applause you're getting so look at that mike thank you for coming here to our beautiful basement show oh it is beautiful it's spooked tackler it is spectacularly we have our friend the mummy here and thanks for having me because i'm super pumped to beer well it's great to have great have you here now what we wanna talk about first we usually do try guest beer yes now since mike was down here ocean county away and it's halloween season i would say it's pumpkin season do you think richard yeah we're gonna maria word pumpkin seeds pumpkin seeds so what we have here some are friends at mannequin don and todd and the whole gang over there we have the ear pumpkin beer there leitch pumpkin beer called khodeir gourd now this particular bottle was bottled by me really i bottled taste it you can you taste it model this beer i had gloves on and i wash my hands also but the story of that is my son recently got married down in stone harbor stone harbor yacht club which they did a great job they had they had slack tides bill buoy on tap there as well l. as six oh nine glass town nice was on tap there but the wedding favors we did in nineteen alluded to it the last podcast if if you listen to shows that we have is that i had fifteen gallons of raspberry wheat beer that we went and bottled so they were kind enough amount of frigging borrow there bottling apparatus so what i did is i basically spent the day there with don and the gang bottling these versions of oh dear board so i got used to using the machine and it worked great and i wanna give a shoutout to big steve who's the tap room manager mannequin who did a phenomenal job of putting the labels on it and of course our buddy in bartlett who is the head brewer at the at some point in the near future to be open battle river brewing and toms river so they did a great job of helping out so so what you're drinking is not only the barrel aged pumpkin beer but you're the blood and sweat that i put into that day went into this what do you guys think of it is nice it is nice nice not overly pumpkin spice nice and subtle yeah it's well-balanced right in the back kind of little i'm not saying rum but i get a little bit of the sweetness from the the barrel the rum barrel like i get a lego oak even ella maybe touched barrels on its the layered apple brandy barrels right it is yeah and the boys over there they do have a great barrel program going on now they have an entire back room devoted to barrels went through a lot of them they have a lot of different versions on it so when i was here before i had the the midnight midnight barrels was the americans doubt on the on the barrel yeah it's not a pumpkin spice bomb yes the biggest treat of the whole thing i think it's really nice nice job nice job adam and they were going to try to make it tonight but they have a bruce schedule they have to keep up with just as everyone else does do you remember when everybody hated pumpkin beers there was a there was a couple years ago a giant backlash against pumpkin beers i mean they flooded the market and everybody was freaking out everyone did and i and i understand i mean i have actually stopped to go get the the bill meal butternut which is another beer that that i am JC me made with with nicholas and we have a here tonight to sample as well and it's also sort of touches on that the end this is of the pumpkin spiced version of a pumpkin beer it's like there's the pumpkin spice beers and there's the not pumpkin spice fall beers right and it's an interesting concept i think it goes to almost how the people look at pumpkin to in america we think of pumpkin just as pumpkin spice pumpkin pie in that way but if you're looking to europe how they think a pumpkin they savory way josh is kind of an ingredient yep the same way like well cook butternut or delacour at home where it's just like okay you're using the actual vegetable and not the other kinds of like spices into that actual dish you just said very big word there licata yes sir right we're looking squad shaver see it no okay it's like green and yellow and orange and bizarrely shaped i don't know if i've heard of it it's really weird and mostly nothing but a whole oh filled with seeds and then you get like five pieces of squash out of it but it's fucking delicious sounds good yeah that does sound delicious some salt you're done that's all you need cook it but i do like this fan larry nice now like the artwork yeah it's very nice very nice job guys very nice job at amount firkin me they actually just released today a heart shelter i may or may not have had it early really yeah i may or may not have loved it yeah kinda wanna go back okay yeah it was really delicious it actually reminded me of just drinking like like fresca like soda but like with more of like the sweetness but and the like subtle subtle carbonation we have to be there don't we now let me get it it's the universe we live in now i'm not promoting but we're doing it a two generational wiser probably closer to the truth than me but a lot of people say the heart shelters coming out that it reminds them of totally yeah what was i never drank zima not fourteen so i stopped sparkly liquid that was i don't remember as low calorie not but i remember it being people and drink beer they drank zima i remember going to my friend's place and his brothers to zuma's i'm like what are those the fourteen is brothers were right twenty and so we got those and we drank them and then you jolly ranchers in them right don't need jolly ranchers and my sensors because they're already tasty enough pry but personally i don't handle more than like two glasses without having like you know sugar rush for my my own personal body but no met regardless of which seltzer it is but at the same time that's why i stay away from some of the sugary sweeter beers right every you know everyone's got their thing like some people despise russian imperial stout some people love russia imperial stout so you know that's that's the beauty of the for in styles of beer out there but seltzer thing in the zima generation now called what are they what are they drinking now like all these truly ease and and what other white claws yeah i mean yeah it closed it's an interesting thing it's but it's it other manufactured at least when you know that someone like medicine or touching on the south jersey beer scene tuck forgotten boardwalk who released an award-winning seltzer that has peach in it and t owned by jersey company that a tea company based on the new jersey and hops and everything else you're getting like a delicious delicious beer shelter made by a brewery that is got the hops it's got it's got it all i want to entrepreneur to win and take that money you every that's like i said i don't fault anybody for finding a piece of the market and the way to put that in their pocket if they can find a way to especially during leagues in a craft way like the people we're talking about one hundred percent grab that money and go if that's what the takes and if you're if you're at that brewery and you wanna talk to the guy who made that that product he's yeah that's the best part of hunterston like you know connecting with the local community here right so let's see we've had that discussion about i mean every brewer i don't think every burn the world especially an and it does seem we're getting away from that every brewer has to be have to put twenty IPA's on tap it does finally seem the market's broken a little the whole summer themed heavy in very german classic styles heavy which makes my friend jay rose superheavy because you know waving the banner of anybody ever listens to my little plug here for my brother my podcast fear of grandpar- planet my jay rose has been waving the banner of the at classic german styles for at least three years now been saying stanfield when looking for especially when the session IP thing was happening but the germans have been doing this for one hundred years now they got this down the i know what they're doing classic german style speed been waving the banner and throwing those beard down the delicious smoked beers that are so interesting and creative and all kinds of neat ways to do what we've been trying to find a million ways to go through all the variations as the germans have some neat ways not that they've cover them all you know what i mean germans have a lot of meat interesting weiss was everywhere those everywhere you know it berliners were interesting this summer because it was there was a most tart they were just they were the opposite of tart but with the fruit it was very interesting and then they turned into slushy for him which was also unique and interesting did you have any of those i didn't have anybody saw them either no i had a couple of heavy real had some vinyl right one that's really interesting happy people are willing to experiment with things that aren't i don't wanna be the waving my tori part b. as people stop it but i mean it's been a few years more than a few years we've been on a massive IP tear we've tried a kazillion versions of PA's there's a million other styles out there play with some other things some stuff i mean i wrote a couple of beers with us with me today that were on my fridge articles to the german style i brought they are not south jersey beers because i kinda ran out of those and i was keeping my random AM kelly-green beers for myself because you know but i brought a from hackensack berea brought their rainbow cookie there are tiny rainbow cookie imperial stout like it's an interesting concept of you know so it's like y- there's so many beers in this market and there's so many beers just yes in the hundred and fifteen ish breweries in new jersey but there's also yeah give or take but also you know four feels zillion breweries in new in america currently and all over i'm we're all interest in trying them and that's the best part about this you know you mentioned college before we start talking about nj CB you're the orange cetera why don't we try this culture that we have can you talk to a little bit about it yes so red tank open a year ago a year ago today whenever there's today so skip a couple of weeks or days and they are a a decently medium sized brewery in red bank in downtown rabobank which is you know we talk about like the we talk about you've had different people on your podcast before from the mall in the.

Catherine was a member of several bird-watching excursion groups and most weekends find her somewhere in the barons on foot or on water enjoying the lives of the common birds and swapping stories of rare sightings with the other burgers in her group the day of Halloween a couple years ago was not exception Halloween Fella no Saturday that year course catherine barely remembered that there was such a thing as Halloween having outgrown salinas like that sometime I'm in middle school for her we just the last day of October Beautiful Day for birding crisp clear with the woods and water filled with birds of every description her group decided on a canoe trip a leisurely two day drift down many waterways that run through the barons the first aid been fantastic catherine wasn't sure whether arms were more sore from paddling or from holding but knockin to her face to get a better look at the birds that teamed everywhere in the Crisp Autumn Woods Day had been so good in fact that Catherine couldn't help try to prolong it after the tents had been set up and dinner eaten while the others were sitting around the fire telling stories of Verd- scene and almost seen Katherine slipped off with their binoculars to the edge of a marshy field she'd found behind the screen of Pines back the campsite the sun was just setting behind her the colors of the marsh in front grew more in more muted and she gazed across it occasionally raising binoculars to focus more closely on some movement among the reeds she'd been there some time and it seem almost no birds at all you seem to have found the least promising spot of the day smiled at herself for getting greedy she was about to turn back to camp when a ripple of movement far across the marshy field caught her eye she raised Bernard there's fiddled with the focus and what's next into sudden clarity through the lenses almost made a drop them she only saw for an instant just an indistinct flash as it hopped flu into the trees opposite but the format later she had to force herself to take a breath and realize that her hands were shaking she pressed the binoculars oh.

So both of your podcasts are also listen to them all the time, Dr in delivering beer and put the smiley face. It sleep. We're doing something right, actually join us driving all this way. John had wanted to talk about what are you? What are your beers? So first of all, dad and I were, we were at the glass for Tom, and I think all of a sudden very delicious. All your beers are good. "Get out to see all these but i don't rob goes quite a few victims law the a lot of the stuff up in ocean county not nearly as many as i should rich richard does a lot of taping all over the place here planet so they do some stuff but i will say this some of them came out of the gate with a lot of promises that they're going to not going to mention names with big systems and how they were gonna take the whole area and i think what people are finding out now is that that's not how it works people have become more discernible what beers they're going to drink and just because you build a big beer factory in their backyard doesn't necessarily mean that they're not going to make the trip to monmouth county to drink some michael gains beer and stock their fridge with rather than coming to your place so and john i want to talk to you about this and quality of beer in south jersey has gone through the roof and i think that one of the things that's done that is this competition but i think the brashness from the new people coming in just like with a new restaurant comes in and gonna shut everybody down down they quickly learned that that's not always the case absolutely i i think you really i think you know we started the two thousand eight you know any new jersey like we all are pompoms out okay now it's it's like it's like okay you're opening nothing new you know what what you have what you offer and i think the you have to especially you know me person just me when i go to a new and i look they have eight to ten taps and six ripe as medium like really right really honestly you know we have all these great choice now can throw punchline as at us it's like new anywhere right but you know unfortunately ip as driving the market and that's gonna you know we can talk about that topic now it's almost like it's almost like when you have a vote of the best beers in america and aided a top ten or as it's like that too i love ipa's fixed going to get it at ten i know those made up no for say but i'm saying even in that kind of proportions how much variation can you get an ip that drive your children if you wanna make two or three or three or four really good ones fine but if more than half of what you offers to me that's like i dunno i should juicy this kind of juicy sort of juicy juice it all very west coast this kind of west coast robin i've talked about this and you know on and off the air and they have you know we forget that their business short and that's that's something that we forget so mcdonald's makes shitty food and has been in business for up teen years this is the same argument.

"It's a fifteen tickets even i mean it's never boozy or hot per se eat three but i mean i don't know i think the coffee has a nice bidders that making a taste that extra i don't know it's beautiful i think the reason i have a two thousand fifteen is because when i moved into my ear house i took the beers outta my fridge and put him into my beer fridge and i was cleaning out the beer for a couple of weeks ago and i say how did this random i how did it last that long and it was in the back of the fridge behind some coronas that thank you credit for sending me coronas you could have seen right through them but i was like what does that back there because i had given away all my beard i found two of them my drink one the other night so i say one for here i think the new say it's i didn't start collecting beetle sometime in two thousand sixteen and it's horrid yes it's hard to keep your you like up on a shelf somewhere especially beers that aren't comet maybe it's in our house actually go yeah i can't i can't fathom that because i just i'm i i like to collect stuff like these phase where lake to collect stuff and i had four bottles at the katie and breakfast out and i'm like i don't want to at three and then i had now i have to and i'm like i don't wanna bring this show my wife's like why do you have them if nobody's going to drink them which well they do i mean i didn't do that no shoot until somebody put a vertical in front of you we did a bad health low how each beer like mad align will change it'll change at wild l is like that also oh that's what was this hour version of that's so i mean it's not on the list i don't think tro was on the list there either so back to south jersey this this this you know what i allot of chocolate it on the news chocolate tastes a lot of dark chocolate on the nose and i think what what would it comes down to is also it's it is really really well balanced it is you're getting those elements but you don't want it's not overpowering the other you'll feel they're fighting with each other feel like oh well balanced so with these south jersey breweries that opened the shirt and i'd love to say that i.
