"As such I feel moved to ask a certain question I mean I've sometimes interviewed public figures over the years who've seen themselves portrayed in some kind of mini series And I remember one man who was a former government official who said you know they came over to my house they talked to me They tried to get my accent They tried to get the way I dressed they even asked me to take out old clothes They got all of that right But they didn't get right was what actually happened Well what's that saying Never let the facts get in the way of a good story I think when you watch winning time especially what you see is that the things that they did that the participants say didn't happen are things that were done to accentuate and accelerate and intensify the story The problem is that people are going to watch all of this and they're going to assume all of this stuff happened And if I was Jerry West and they showed me taking my MVP trophy and throwing it through a window and breaking it and you didn't do it that would make me upset And PhD critic Eric Dickens however always good to talk to you Thanks so much for being with us That's right You don't have to worry about me throwing anymore Thanks a lot Now it's time for more sports The NBA playoffs a major league star gets two year suspension in the first new year to the year thrown by 5 different pitchers Is that fair and pierce Tom Goldman joined just on thanks so much for being with us Hi Scott Second round of the NBA playoffs begin tomorrow with a great matchup The Boston Celtics versus fair.

"These things are terrible. Biographies different autobiographies, I think I'm pretty much done with them. But Jerry West had some real issues there. Yeah, so I mean, I'm gonna go on a totally different direction here. There's a book before you do. We'll get to you. Okay. But on the Lakers show, in your in the book, then one year, you come across as not a Laker lover. I am not a Laker lover. And yet, are you still finding this, the show about the rise of Lakers, interesting or is it, okay, well, I got to do it because it's part of my business and no, I mean, I think you can see I'm not a Laker lover. I grew up on the east coast. Now we are in Pittsburgh. We didn't have an NBA team, but like in our neighborhood, it seemed like there were two sects if you want to say it. One was Celtic fans and one was really like Wilt Chamberlain fans and then of course he was with Philadelphia and then went to the Lakers. So there were like two groups of fans and I was on the Celtic side. The neighborhood was pretty well split. So I mean, that's carried with me pretty much my whole life. Then it went to the Lakers and like I said, half the group became Laker fans. And I remained the Celtic fan. I'm probably not nearly so much today. It doesn't seem worth it. But yeah, probably comes through. Now, as a bookmaker, the Lakers have been beating me for the last 30, 40 years. So that's another reason why I'm not a great Laker fan. I mean, we're working to say they've been a great, great franchise..

"Like, what are we doing here? Like, is it everybody's job to give a full biographical accounting of every single fucking subject? That's not how this shit works. And if you think that's how it should, you're a fucking idiot. I'm sorry. That's not what we do. We don't talk about like when people write a book about Richard Nixon. And they concentrate on what he did as a president. And somebody says, well, back in the days, he did bubba bun. This was not a full thing of Richard Nixon. This is like, that's not how you get treated as prominent figures in society. You're not some person being plucked from obscurity, you know, working in a fucking factory and people are just killing you in some artistic depiction. So my big book. Justin, you can take me down. This one, if I'm worthy, if you could sell a fucking book based on my life and you put the work in writing it for me, take my ass down. These are the most exalted people in our fucking society. I'm supposed to cry for Jerry West, depiction on a fucking TV show. That's ridiculous. I will say, if you want the truth, like read the book. Read a read book that any book. And to the extent that the fictionalizations that are happening in this show to me are small potatoes compared to, let's say some of the liberties taken in like the last dance, for example, when you present something as documentary as this is fact, this is like, this is on the ground accounting of what happened versus, again, John C Reilly talking into the camera as he comes out of the Playboy mansion. You probably shouldn't take that stuff a 100% at face value. That is a viewer issue, not a text issue. Yeah, just to be clear, I probably would take more umbrage to Jerry buss being the white knight than I do with Jerry West portrayal. But speaking of books, if you do read Jerry West's book, it does get pretty dark in there. So maybe put that at the top of the list. All right, maybe we'll check back on the show later on. This is technically within our purview. Yeah. Of course it is. We have a podcast. We can talk about stuff. All right. That's it for us this week. We'll be back next week. Same time same place. Thank you to Isaiah blakely on production. We will see you then..

"Maybe it's losing to the Celtics so many times it drove him crazy. Maybe it's just like, he was in a position that he didn't want to be in, you know, I had the pleasure of meeting Jerry West here when he came in studio a few years ago and he dropped like 6 F bombs in the first two sentences and it was just like talking to an old friend. He was that comfortable and that's just how the man talks. He uses a lot of colorful language. I want to see, I mean, we obviously know in reality where this led to, but I'm looking forward to seeing Jerry West character as this series goes on. See how many more golf clubs he can snap because as we know he has a running tab with the Clubhouse, right? So Jerry West losing it is just a treat so far. That's my number 5 thing that I like so far in the rise of the Lakers dynasty. Coming at number four norm Nixon, whose son was here yesterday. Yes. Norm Nixon getting roasted to the beauty salon. Jeff and Detroit will tell you he'll call in all the time and they'll talk about barbershop talk. My boy Benny blades right now, my barber, he's watching, he knows, and the barbershop, I've been known to throw gasoline on some conversations just to get two people fighting with one another. And getting roasted is one thing, right? Everyone's kind of gotten roasted in their life. But getting just flame by a bunch of women while you're getting a Mani pedi, like come on, that was a great moment, even though norm Nixon claims he's never gotten a pedicure, but in two of the funniest lines from that scene, Chris. When the one woman was like, when you came in here, we thought he was the mailman, gave you a gave you a stamp and everything. And then she told him if you lose your minutes, maybe magic can pull.

"About his relationship with the Lakers organization, says it's just, it's not good, says it's terrible. And it's gotten to the point where the Lakers have now revoked the lifetime tickets that doctor Jerry buss offered him. Now, of course, Jerry West is now working for the clippers. Maybe that's part of the equation here. And there's two sides to every story. But on the surface, this is not this isn't a great look for the Lakers. I mean, this is a legend, a guy who brought your championship a guy who construct the championship teams and his relationship with the franchise is terrible. He says it's irreparable. It's never going to be fixed. What do you, what do you think about this whole situation and what's gone on here? I just have no idea. I know that there's been tension and this isn't the first time Jerry West has come out and said something about the Lakers. You know in a negative light. Just recent report just adds more feel to the fire and you know if you read that report by Sam may make of the athletic, you'll see that Genie didn't respond when she was reached out for comment. So. As far as my thoughts go, though, I just think it's really unfortunate and sad that a Laker legend, you know, you and I are too young to have watched Jerry West play in the Lakers uniform, but we know him as the GM and the architect of those 5 title teams really. And so Jerry OS influence on the franchise can't be understated. He is a legend, and he deserves to be respected and treated as such. And it's just weird that the Lakers franchise historically goes way out of their way to make sure that their stars feel like their stars. Or to make sure that they're legends feel like they have a special place in history. But I just, I don't know, man. It's really sad and unfortunate. I get he's working for the clippers and there's some bad blood or tension between the two franchises, obviously. But I just don't really necessarily think that this is how the Lakers should be going about things as far as jere west is concerned. Obviously, we only know his side. I don't know what the Lakers think of it. I don't know what Jeannie thinks of it, or the rest of that front office, or anyone else involved at the team. But it's like you said, it's not a good look. And it just kind of throws more dirt on this season, right? As if the on court issues weren't bad enough. Now you get stuff like this. When I think about the ticket issue, I wonder, when was the last time he used them? And I don't know. I have no idea. It could have been that he went to a game last week, or they were in a road trip last week, but two weeks ago. It could have been that he's gone recently. I really don't know. I can't think of the last time that he was on that the cameras found him, and he was there. Isn't it possible what a big good for Thursday, right? Yes. Right. But well, that's an away game though for the Lakers. But if it's, if it's a situation where, let's say he hasn't used those tickets in years, and he's just passing those things out like friend to friends and stuff like that. Maybe that changes the equation a little bit. And I'm not saying that makes it right, taking those tickets away or whatever, I'm just kind of throwing out that there's two sides to every story..

"So yeah, you know, a lot of different combinations here. And I think it just goes to show you that the Lakers don't really know exactly what they have because just guys haven't been completely healthy and I know people are tired of hearing that as well, but it's just the truth. I don't have numbers in front of me or anything, but I bet if I looked at different lineup combinations, I bet the minutes totals compared to other teams across the league. It's probably a lot lower. That'd be my guess. And we did this a little bit last year, too. But not to this degree, right? The question was, is Mark assault in the starting lineup your best bet? Or is it somebody else? Is it Andre Drummond now, right? Is it his turn in the starting line, right? So we did this a little bit, but not like this. Not like this where you have so many different possible answers. And then you think back to the stability of the championship season. The starting lineup unless there was an injury like Avery Bradley got hurt for a little bit. Oh, bummer. Avery Bradley's hurt. Okay, KCP. Fully capable guy. Can step in, right? It was Danny Green, either KCP or Avery, Bradley, LeBron James, Anthony Davis, JaVale McGee. Those were your starters, and then Frank Vogel got to tinker with things come play off time. We saw marquee Morris for a little bit. We saw Dwight Howard log major minutes against Nikola Jokić. He got to mix and match. But for most of the regular season, that was the starting lineup. We didn't have this discussion. And I think it just speaks to what a mess, the off season was in terms of putting a roster together that here we are, and we still can't pinpoint what the best starting 5 is. I mean, again, like, Tino faults of rob's fault or whoever else you want to blame. I mean, injuries have definitely played a role in that. But I do think that given the circumstances it is a little crazy that we're in the beginning of February now when we're talking and we still don't really have a starting lineup that everyone can competently say, this is what we're going to come out with tonight. And mat thinking about that 2020 teams insane. I guess I'm just reminiscing over good things now because I just don't have a lot to look forward to when it comes to Lakers games, but man, it's crazy. We had Caruso, KCP coming off the bench, Dwight. I guess it just goes to show and I think this is like a good example for fans to realize how important chemistry and continuity are when team building. A lot of Lakers players have echoed this sentiment is that they just haven't had time on the floor together to figure things out and it kind of feels like everyone's just waiting for people to come back and then people come back and then someone else goes out. It's been a theme the past two seasons and it's incredibly frustrating and it's sad that it's still a talking point and it's still applicable to this day. Two steps forward and two steps back. I think the Lakers themselves the front office may have taken it for granted because you think about how quickly that title team came together almost from the get go..

"But the flip side, of course, is you have a greater chance of pulling off the wind. So I don't know how to approach this stretch. Is this a good thing that the teams they're facing are not the top tier teams or could this actually be a bad thing? I just feel like there's added pressure for this group to win these games without LeBron. Because like you said, you look at the schedule and when percentages of the teams you just name then you know on paper at least it looks like the Lakers should have these games, even without LeBron, obviously in a Russell Westbrook parked up a little bit AD is look like Anthony Davis, which is very encouraging. So with that being said, it kind of just feels like these are and I keep saying this every game, but this feels like must win. This feels like a must win stretch for the Lakers, because they have unfortunately blown a lot of those give me a games or games that they should have won to give themselves a buffer for stretches like these where you don't have LeBron James, but unfortunately that's no longer the case. So to me, this is a stretch where this could make or break, you know, some of the standings right now for the Lakers, these three games, I think, coming up, they need to have at least two out of three, at least in my mind, is probably the best case scenario. Obviously, three out of three would be perfect, but given the up and down nature of the season and how the team has looked, I don't really bank on that anymore. So just to get a couple wins in this next week would be great for the Lakers, I think. And would certainly be helpful if two out of those three that you get the wins are the ones against the blazers and the clippers because of where things are looking in the standings. Right now, the Lakers are sitting in the 9 seed. Clippers are in the 8 seat, but only one game up. So in their game against the clippers, they could flip that. And they can jump up to 8. And then the blazers are three games behind the Lakers right now. So you want to keep that separation there. I feel like the Lakers floor, they're not going to fall out of the play in tournament. But if you're going to be in the play in tournament and crazy that this is where we are now mad in the season where we're talking about not playoff positioning, but play in tournament positioning, but you want to be in that 7 or 8 seed so that you only have to win once in the play internment if they stay in the 9 spot. That's not good. So these games, these next two games are actually pretty important that they find a way to get a win without LeBron. I put it out there on Twitter..

"Down today. We're going to focus quite a bit. But some of the things Frank Vogel said after practice today, some things that raise some eyebrows. We also got an update on LeBron James. It was a little bit different than the news that was out there earlier in the day. So we've got some things to get into today. Joining me. For this show, Matt the optimist Peralta, optimism prime, Matt, how are you doing? I'm doing good, Trevor. It's good to know that the live show curse is no longer applicable. They're on a three game losing streak, even though I've taken a break. So I guess it's safe for me to come back on, right? Absolutely it is. It's been proven. It's not you. It's not you that causing the Lakers to lose. It's something else who knows what that could be. Um, I don't know. Maybe LeBron being out could be a big part of it. But no, fortunately it is not Matt the optimist Peralta. Yes, thank God. I miss talking Lakers basketball with you, Trevor, and our wonderful fans here at Lakers nation. So it's good to be back. All right, let's talk a little bit about LeBron James. So LeBron, obviously still do it with swelling in his knee. Frank Vogel, today after practice, we got a chance to chat with him and he said LeBron is officially doubtful for the game against the Portland Trail Blazers. Most people listening to this on Wednesday. It'll be today's game, we're recording this night before, but in any event, the game against the Portland Trail Blazers, LeBron, according to Frank Vogel, officially listed as doubtful earlier in the day he was reported as being out according to charms rania. Plus out for a few more games after that, Frank Vogel didn't seem to echo that sentiment. He mentioned that LeBron again doubtful for this game, did not work out at the facility, was getting treatment off site, but characterized this again as just swelling and this is a very key word that he used. I think is important, Matt. He said it's preventative that what they're doing right now is to get LeBron back to 100% to make sure it doesn't turn into a bigger injury. To me, that suggests that whatever's going on right now is not all that serious. And there was some concern that maybe there was something else going on in there that maybe the Lakers weren't sharing or they're being secretive about Frank Vogel using the term preventative makes me feel a lot better. Yeah, it makes me feel a lot better too. And I kind of figured that was the case the entire time. Obviously, when Anthony Davis was out, Frank Vogel was writing LeBron James pretty hard, and he did it in a place of extra minutes..

"They go there and visit. Giannis went down there last year with his championship trophy and I mean, he went to Greece, where he's from. But we're always seeing players go down there. And it's like goodwill, but many of them who started their careers down there and have gone through Europe and made it here at the NBA. I think that's where our next wave of really good players are going to chemical to kids are all tall, angular. You know, very discipline, families are very tight down there. And so we're going to see another growth of basketball. Are you Australia now, producing really good players? There's another really good when it came in the league this year, Oklahoma City, Josh giddy, really going to be good. Like that kid. He really gonna be good. And Oklahoma City's got a great backcourt, great young backcourt for the future. And so there's going to be more and more players that come from these European countries that are going to be different personalities and are not going to be exposed to all the American ways of life, self promotion. This will be earned by that. But I do appreciate having me on and of course it's always great to see you. Thank you, Gary. Jerry. And there you have it. "The game, shooting, you must be able to make a Sean. Okay, you must be able to make chocolate. Everyone can dribble the ball. Some dribble way too much. Difficult to play with. But you can learn every almost everything you need to learn by yourself. There's so much information if there's a player drills and stuff that maybe you didn't even think about. You can learn this by yourself Michael, you don't need ten people around you to do this. It's a solitary game. And, you know, look at yourself trying to analyze yourself. Keep notes to yourself. How many shots did I make from the free throw line? How many and maybe 50? Ten at a time. Then as you get a little bit older shoot more, how many shots did I make from off of the bounce a couple of dribble and pull up quickly for a jump shot? I had the right rotation on it. If you don't have the right rotation, you know yourself, you're not going to get many favorable bounces. But having said that, these new rims Michael for protecting from these guys, nothing about. Oh my God. I can't believe some of the bounces. Yeah, there's just unbelievable. But it's true. It really is. I would love to do some of the old rim, but and you know, learn how to learn how to play the game. And if you just watch team game, don't just watch through sports. Watch what bodies are doing. Watch what kind of movement you need, know when to go fast. No angles, you know, just a simple thing. I watched a clipper game last night who involved with. And I saw three times guys would be on the clippers 21 turnover in the game. They still won the game. I have no idea how. Driving up the right side of the court and throwing a cross court pass and I said, uh, oh, lay up on the other end. You can't throw across court pass and basketball, particularly at midcourt. And any other thing on penetrating passive when people drive and they there's some people are great dunkers in this league and they'll lob it up there in Gaza. Most of the time on that because they're not you can't throw these sideway passes. They have to be bounce passes in there. And just angles, how many times, how many times do people step on the three point step out of bounds behind the three point line? That's uncalled for. You don't want to go to this league down, man. It's uncalled for, Michael. And it just like a discipline. And you know, some people will get it and they'll put their one foot back when you can't, you have to practice that..

"I don't know if that made any difference. I do know up until they say Jerry and talk to him. I wasn't aware of that. And he was unhappy with a lot of things. And one thing I told him, his career, I said, you're not always going to play me playing with great players. There's no way. I said, you're going to have to somewhere along the way, trust the front office to see if they can build a team around you. And he just got to the point where he's so dominant and they added a couple players that really made a difference for him. And it shows how one player Michael in the game can change the fortunes of a team that contains the fortune of a franchise. And he was one of those franchise players. Plus, the reason he was a superstar, people paid to see him play. And I'll never forget that Sunday morning. I first heard about that possibly it was him and his cries. And a life taken too young, frankly, a very devastating three weeks for me. I couldn't get this memory out of my mind. He and his young daughter who he had such a great relationship with and how he promoted women's basketball. Michael, he would have been a bigger success off the court and he would have been on the court. And the life taken too short and iconic figure who I think you saw the outpouring of all races, men and women packed down there. The grief in their eyes, it would just something when that day comes around every year, I think about it. And I just, I was shocked beyond belief. Yeah. But he was just a special player, and he had changed so much when he had retired. I saw a great improvement in him. Because the way he reached out to people, and particularly young women who were he didn't want them to be denied a part to be an athlete who had taken seriously. And that helped a lot trust me. It really did. And for him, his family creates a lot of turmoil. And it's still very controversial to this day in terms of, you know, why? No one who ever know why. Last question, Jerry, and again, thank you for your time, man. Jerry, you have to promise me you'll come on in a couple of months down the road, so we could do a Jerry West part two because I got a little time for you, man..

"Older players pretty soon Michael, that's not gonna work. You need a graph like this. Younger players rookies, second year player, guys are 45, four or 5 year veterans, guys, or 8 or 9, ten year veterans. And you can keep in place a good solid team, but if you're like this, it's going to be a major rebuild. And today with so many players around and free agency, you can not get players. You have to have relationships with agents. Look what agents can do today. They can supply players, and particularly good and they have a lot of players. If you build a great relationship with them, they can direct players to your program and particularly if you have the ability to pay. So there's a lot more planning today that goes in, particularly the financial side. And I said it before and I'll say it again. There are people that make 2020 $5 million like Michael. I don't think they're worth $25 million. I don't care what a player makes. I don't care. Hey, Jerry. Jerry, what was your top salary when you played? $275,000. Michael, I turned down the first $1 million contract. I turned it down. I said, I can't do it anymore. And the Laker owner at that time, Jack cook was furious at me. And he basically shouldn't have lied to me. He lied to me that year before about a contract. And, you know, I just, I couldn't do it, Michael. I could not do it. I can't take money for not being a 100% involved. And there's no way I could be involved a 100% at that point in time. They asked so much of you, you know, to be guarded best opposing teams, score 25 game. I couldn't score 30 a game then. A bad knee injury lead the league in scoring when I mean league in scoring leader league and assist be a leader. That's almost impossible to do, Michael, once you get to a certain age, and particularly the lack of treatment for some of the injuries that would be very minor today. You're listening to the man himself, Jerry West on showtime with Jerry. We're at the point where I'm gonna give you a lightning round. A couple more questions for you. This is I'm asking 5 names and just tell me as much as you want about this person, okay?.
"jerry west" Discussed on The Showtime Podcast with Lakers Legend Coop
"Welcome to another edition of showtime with coup insightful BS with Lake and teammates at NBA legends and I am so honored to have kind of like both for me. NBA legend and a Laker all time great Laker Jerry West. Jerry how are you doing, sir? I'm doing great, Michael. Great to see you and look like you're chipper old self again. So I spent some time with you. Minus the hair, Jerry. Real quick, Jerry, we'll get into some of your accolades. I know you're not that type of person, Jerry never brags on himself. One of the most humblest person that I've ever been around, NBA story champion, NBA champion. NBA Finals MVP. Jerry, as I was doing my work behind the scenes on this, I didn't know you were first team all defense. But my campaign. That was late in my career when they didn't do it. And obviously when I first came into the lid, you know, it was a different kind of league than it is today. Obviously, a lot more grabbing and holding. And it really was probably would have been a great time for you to be there because you're a very aggressive defense team player of yourself. You like it. Get after people. And that was in Franklin. That was in vogue, and very aggressive physical game. Not so much team orientated unless you unless you have somebody can block shots behind you. But it was completely different game and one of the things I was taught earlier in my career is that the the element of defense was something that people really didn't concentrate. Everyone always looks at scores and everything. And I've always felt the best players were the best well rounded players. But I had coaches and emphasized that with me throughout my career in, fortunately, I wish they had kept it earlier and particularly steals. That would have been would have been fun because it's a big part of the game today. A statistical thing, then it was winds pretty much. And who was scoring the points? On the 35th annual anniversary team, you're on the NBA 50th anniversary team. That's made the NBA 75th anniversary team. Numbers retired in the Lakers. Jerry I've never had my number retiring to college. Number 44 is that West Virginia retired. Jerry West..

"It's not individual. You have great individual, that can win games for you. But they have to be able to assimilate themselves to allow the other players to prosper also. That's a basque. Can you give the audience an idea of what your day to today looks like as a basketball executive? I think for us who are fans, just something fascinating to think about and obviously you've been a lot of different front offices. Can you just take us through just certain interesting aspects of that job that people might not understand? Well, first of all, I think it depends on the person who's involved. I've always felt your personality regardless of who you are. It's probably going to reflect number one who the people you hire and the people that you have that have the same desire you have to win. You know, everyone talks about sometimes, oh, you know, I want to do this. I want to win this. But there's a lot of people get a job in the NBA has happened at four and a year later they're looking for another job. So if you can get a group of people together in my opinion that have great camaraderie and allowing each other to change, allow each other to exchange thoughts and ideas about what they're looking for in a player, never, never disrespect someone's attitude. I don't care who it is. I used to have a guy that worked at a security guard, he would come up to me all the time, your name

"The table with him. And when he left, my son was so mad, and he was little. He's only about 9, ten years old. And he was little, and he said, that was the most embarrassing thing that ever happened to me in our life. And it's really one of the funniest things I can remember when it concerns my kids. I read vociferously about people of all walks of life. I just finished reading a book last night on ex-president and also a general, like Eisenhower, fascinating man, and a great president, by the way. And so I've always had this incredible thirst for knowledge about people who have to copy something. And he read his stories of Nelson Mandela, Rosa Parks. Martin Luther King, his ability to speak and command respect. I just finished a second book on Malcolm X an amazing speaker. And the change in his life when he was, he went from one extreme to the other. And to think that this guy who had changed so much, and he wanted a different view of this world, okay? He did, and what he was watching. And another brilliant man and extremely smart because he had a different belief than Muhammad and it was, it was reading these two books, made me think, my goodness, if he hadn't started his life out, maybe he would have been a president of the United States. He was brilliant smart. You know, I just looked today this morning and some young rapper shot and killed this morning. Another one. I'm saying to myself, why? In all races, why do we do this to ourselves? I hate violence. I hate violence. And I met this young man at one of the clipper games this year, very nice, very polite. And 20 years old, we need to go on. Life is so senseless. I did not, but knowing about him and reading about him, he was impressive guy. It really impressed you guy. And as I say, in America, you know, we have the right to bear arms. The my goodness. Life is cat too short, so sad. And he has something he wanted to give back to the community. Community pride is something really, really, really strange. Personal prior to something really strange because people go about their lives. And they think everything is going to be great every day. It's not going to be great every day. But particularly the people who try to help make a difference for some reason, if they're in a wrong place, wrong area, have the wrong affiliation with people, the people who can help make a change are gone. Far too soon, and all we do is hold memorials for them, and you say to yourself, no. Shame on you. Shame on you. This person was a difference maker. You are listening to westward on the Dan Patrick podcast network. We'll be right back.
Los Angeles Lakers star, Clippers executive Baylor dies at 86
"Unfortunately we have some sad news. I'm sure you've seen already bhai now. Elgin baylor passed away. Jerry west who was his longtime teammate with the lakers was on with mason and ireland with ramona who was information today and they had him on. And you know. I thought jerry really. He nailed it when he said that. You know elgin baylor was really the first star to put the lakers on the map. Let's hear well for here. And then particularly. I think the first two or three years but we you know became kind of a dynamic duo in terms of scoring and and driving his team to win I think the sad thing about it was that Doing dad era heck. We were on the last page of the newspapers. I remember vividly our first few years In sports sports arena. You go there and the people would be rooting for other teams. And it wasn't until while until we started getting into the playoffs and that seems to Kind of Get people's involvement going. It seems to be more interest that doing those playoff periods Fans started turning out. And of course he was you know he was the king of the hill But i was just you know kind of his running mate and I think together It was a pretty big combination. But there's no question. Is that his charisma. Holding the court. was special and and today's era he would he would have been all over the place but I did not look at him like that. I just looked at him as a basketball player. That had great skill and great determination. I looked at him more as a friend. And someone who shared much much more than just the basketball pointing itself
Jerry West allegedly talks recruiting Kawhi Leonard to Clippers
"Start with what i think is the most fascinating story of the day little offbeat little out there little weird but absolutely interesting. Do you know where i'm going. I disagree with you about all that but go ahead and explain you. Don't think it's fascinating and this guy is full of crap. No the voice okay. Let's let's set it up so this is a story that started bubble up earlier this week. A guy named johnny wilks is suing jerry west for not making the two point five million dollar payment that he was promised in exchange for his help in landing by the clippers and the clippers went on denied. The claims and said jerry. West didn't even know this guy today way. When did the cooper say that in their statement clippers or providing. Nba evidence that these allegations are false. Right but i've never heard the cooper see. You never knew this guy okay. I'll read the clippers statement lawsuit kabajani wha- replete with inaccuracies allegations are baseless. The clippers are fully cooperating the nba in this investigation Blah blah blah clippers are providing the nba with evidence that the allegations are false. They never denied specifically nine. That's johnny wolverine on the voice mail. So there's a voicemail and so the clippers are out denying it. Meanwhile this guy named johnny wilkes released a voicemail that clearly jerry west right. No no dispute that it's jerry west right right The jerry west left on johnny wilks phone hit that hordic. Excuse me this. Is jerry calling You know. I really want to thank you for know trying to help her. This morning. that everyone over the lakers can thank going getting I just. I had hard to believe that he would want to go to. This show. Very would not even be winning. Getty name in the paper. And he wouldn't be the face of the franchise s richer might be the best player on the team but Hope things are well and will again. I really really appreciate everything. you've done. we will I'll keep your prized. What goes on. But i do wanna get together with you privately and and love to take you to dinner and even sam if he's arou- so we can so i can lease they married to you guys for being so generous and helpful. I'll take care talk you sometimes so so really really appreciate your help really appreciate your offering to take him to. Dinner is a long way from offering him. Two point five million dollars. And did you see the other stuff. This guy wilks is alleging was on the table. That's the most fast. Okay so now. I know why the nba opened up an investigation. Or yesterday you ask me well. Why if this guy is just some money grubber. Why would the nba care. Here's why they care in the lawsuit wilkes also alleges that the if leonard signed with the clippers leonard uncle dennis would receive a house in southern california along with travel expense and that clippers owner steve balmer would fund a hundred million dollar marketing campaign for kawhi leonard. So if if any of that is true that is a blatant violation of the. That's circumventing the salary cap rules. You're giving him value more over and above what his contract pays right. But i think this guy loses all credibility when he says that jerry west was going to give them two point five million dollars just for helping him talked to qui- jerry west doesn't need johnny wilks to talk to anybody and so i have trouble believing this guy. Johnny wilks is. I mean if lie about that chances are you would lie about this. One hundred million dollar marketing campaign the slush fund for uncle. Danettes you are. You actually think this guy. Johnny wilks is telling the truth. Look it's the clippers. It's the clippers you know. They were desperate for desperate for them. They're nowhere without kawhi. He's become the second where them while they're nowhere nowhere with them to write But but this is the centerpiece of their france. The cornerstone that they're building around. Why would they not go to the wall and do anything. It took to get cold leonard. Well i i think the opened an investigation because of those last two points. They made the gets a house and travel expense account and the one hundred million dollar marketing campaign for quiet. You can't do that. Because then free agency is a complete sham. It just goes to ever has the most money if you can offer all that other stuff. So that's why they're looking into it now. They're looking into it. Because this johnny wilks lawsuit consistent. Johnny woke lot is going to say this stuff wouldn't even come up without johnny walk so there's already credibility in the lawsuit. I don't think well no. I disagree that the johnny looks credible in any way. But here's what. Here's what. I'll say i've known jerry west for thirty years. I don't think jerry west would be this stupid now. Of course i could be wrong but jerry's been one of the most upfront direct. And he's almost too candid. Your can be very very candid with everybody. He deals with the i n for johnny. Will you know it's. He's shooting at the king here. Johnny wilks and there's so many people know jerry and he has such a body of work that would indicate he would never do anything like this. That i don't think johnny luke's can win. Unless he has another audiotape. Where with jerry sing. I'm going to give you two point. Five million if you get us why. I think his lawsuits dead in the water. What do you think well. you know. it's interesting. I think there might be something here. Yeah i don't know how you're getting there. This is this is steve bomber. This is a guy who's made of money. This was a guy who's desperate to get his team on the map in los angeles where they are not on the map. Frankly haven't been on the map and certainly worn on the map before qui- so is it. Possible that steve balmer offered extra monetary benefit to kawai in order to get them. I think that's worth an investigation.
The Los Angeles Clippers Have Fired Doc Rivers
"Another myth another legend was fired Bob and I don't you were shocked as I was I, didn't see this coming where Doc rivers we had on the podcast you and I are both huge fans of doc as a human being as a coach. I don't. I. Don't know where I stand right now. Obviously, he is blown some big leads the latest being one in the bubble. Denver and with a team that let's face it. Steve. Balmer paid doc rivers big money to win a championship not not be eliminated by the Denver Nuggets in the in the western conference semifinals so Valid or not valid to let doc rivers go. I knew that we all knew that losing another three to one was not a good thing to have on on anyone's resume to do it twice in. Three years. And the do it with this owner as you said, who invested the overpaid for the team I think even by modern standards that teams are worthy he he got a little giddy with his two billion dollar plus purchase of the clippers the Lakers we could see but not the clippers. So okay, he's invested in this and I worried about it a little bit but I didn't think it would happen. I thought it was a possibility of Steve Bomber angry. But, I, thought it was an of course couching it. It's mutual ha you know coming out of the usual walk away from that money it's the modern. Thing to do that say it's mutual nationally I felt badly because I am very proprietary to a doctor and I have communicate with him already. But. It's understandable that an owner. Successful businessman. Odyssey's bomber is a highly successful with that investment. I I don't know what I don't know Jeff is the level of his own personal basketball acumen. I don't know how much he thinks. He knows he knows more doesn't knows more than that part I don't know you know. Here's what I'll tell you about. Here's what I'll tell you I. Don't think this was all Steve. Balmer. My guess is Jerry West who they pay a ton of money as a consultant. Okay. As a consultant. Yeah. Good point is Jerry West played a significant. In this move and now the question will be. What what's next in the big thing with doc and you and I know this we've been around enough. Great human being great communicator. But the biggest words that you would hear from players about doc dating back to the Celtics was a little bit of a Country Club, right? It's it's easy doctors a practice much. Older players veterans love, them. Again it's where you want to go to and the latter part of your. Extend Your career. and You wonder if that played a huge part here because certainly the clippers didn't look like there were in tiptop condition in the bubble weather. It was Knox fault whether it's back that mantras Harrow had a death in the family and didn't come into the bubble too late whether it's a fact that Lou Williams left the bubble and came back the Patrick Beverley. There were there were a lot of issues. But ultimately. It. Probably does follow on doc in a sense that you had the pieces you had the pieces. You shouldn't be watching if you're the clippers, you can't be watching the Los Angeles Lakers right now compete for

NBA trade deadline: Winners, losers and teams in between
"Flurry of trades in the NBA a blockbuster in baseball mortar common colds to memorialize Kobe Bryant and highly visible way joined by ESPN's Howard Bryant good morning hours good morning Scott how are you I'm fine thanks is awesome aggressive deals in the NBA trade at the trade deadline who do you rack up as the winners and losers well and I'm not sure about the winners and losers of the trade deadline but certainly the winners and losers right now of the first half of the season you've got a look at the Lakers in the west and and the Milwaukee Bucks I think they are head and shoulders above everybody else how could you hold on for a moment our you know head yes government for you almost got me for a second there's got yeah Milwaukee is terrific and and they're great they're holding on the crushed Philadelphia the other night I thought coming into the season it was gonna be Philadelphia Milwaukee Los Angeles and Los Angeles Lakers and the clippers but I'm not too sure about the other two yet but we've got a long way to go I think trade deadline wise I think Miami Heat got much much better they got on great good dollar they made a very good deal with Memphis I think that Philadelphia tried to shore up of making a deal with with the warriors and de Angelo Russell going to Minnesota who knows what that's gonna do maybe there's a late run there but the bottom line is coming forward right now I still think that you've got two teams in this league disappointed the Boston Celtics didn't do anything but I think it's the box and the Lakers right now an official memorial for Kobe Bryant's been set for February twenty fourth they've been calls to make his image a permanent part of the game you even rent a Poland that did I did I read a little Twitter poll this morning which was soundly rejected to replace Kobe Bryant is Jerry west to is the logo of the NBA with cut him a cell away from the silhouette of your request yes absolutely and it would have been fitting in some ways because Jerry west was the the man behind making sure Kobe Bryant ended up with the Lakers making that draft day trade with the Charlotte Hornets and I I understand add on one on one level the need or they want to want to memorialize Kobe I also understand that the NBA has been around since nineteen forty seven and maybe it's time to create a new logo Jerry west has been there fifty years since nineteen sixty nine however I do think that if you're going to think about and I'm a new logo or and a modern logo it's probably got to be Michael Jordan right or but I got an arm and a leg yeah but I also understand the desire right now for people to feel that something should be done for Kobe Bryant after after all that happened Boston Red Sox LA Dodgers Minnesota Twins switching sports agreed to a three team trade Tuesday that's been perhaps delay it has been delayed because of some medical records Mookie Betts has what they call a generational player MVP Golden Gloves traded to the Dodgers are the red Sox making the worst roster decision since they sold Babe Ruth's contract well if you red Sox fans are very happy about it especially because it's a generational player Mookie Betts is a beloved player two years ago he wins the M. B. P. and they won the World Series you're looking at a guy that fans just adore and it's a very cynical move in some ways but it also may very well be a huge business deal for them because number one we know that super star players now at this level after Manny Machado deal after the Bryce Harper deal your it in and now the the Gerrit Cole deal you're looking at three hundred and fifty four hundred million dollars to sign a player and if Mookie Betts didn't want to play with the red Sox will find out over the next several weeks and months if that was the case then of course they had to move them but on the other hand if that's not the case the red Sox are a super power they can sign whoever they want they've got money it's looking like a cynical deal we will see I'm good at and by the way I got as you know your cubs aren't far behind because you've got a guy like Chris Brian who's another cornerstone player and what does that mean for the cubs keep these players and the fans love him yeah thank you very much ESPN's Howard Bryant thanks so much no my pleasure

LeBron James and the Winning Basketball Play
"Let me defend Kevin. So Steve Kerr came out and said I want him shooting thirty times a game. And I think Steve Kerr smart, but I think Steve Kerr's wrong here. Here's why I always defended LeBron James on this. Lebron always made the winning basketball play LeBron's not Michael Jordan, LeBron's not Koby. He's not he's more. Magic johnson. The Bronco criticized. Michael you almost always took the final shot first of all he didn't he let coach Steve Kerr impacts and take a lot of shots. Michael Jordan, did don't tell me Michael took the right shot, but LeBron came into the world post MJ in the middle of Kobe's career in the bronze like guy wide open on double team at night. And I always supported the let me support. Kevin Durant here. They were up by thirty doing it Kevin's way don't blame Kevin for the loss. No team in the history of the NBA is had what Kevin has Kevin Thomson Steph curry the three shooters on the planet are arguably Steph curry Klay Thompson, Kevin James harden and Tokai Reardon in there. So I disagree with this idea that you have to just generalize. Hey, my star player shooting thirty the warriors are different. They have arguably the two best shooting guard. It's the best back and history curry Klay Thompson is better than. Jerry West Gail Goodrich, which I grew up with is the best backcourt shooting in the history of the NBA. So it's a completely different paradigms and Kevin Durant. Saint Louis I can shoot you forty three percent over Patrick Beverley and get the hard to. But isn't this sport? Now about the easy three not the hard to and Durant's the best hard to shooter in the world. But Kevin's got it, right? Is I can do that. And I can hit that. But I got I got wide open world class shooters. I think there's been a way to play basketball and everybody knows now the worst shot in the league. Now, even though Durant best at it is a hard to and Durant. The best hard to shooter in the world. But the better shots, the easy three in Durant. San. I'm going to distribute to these world class shooters. If clay was on this team or Steph wasn't I would say shoop thirty. But I always defended LeBron this I'm gonna I'm gonna defend Durant on this. They're both the same guy. They're saying I'm going to make the right basketball play. And I will always we got too many guys mislead that don't do the right basketball play. They take bad shots when you can get a starlike. Lebron Durant goat. Now. I'm gonna do the right basketball. I love that. I'll defend that for the rest of my life. That's the way. I love the
Is Jerry West the Clippers' secret weapon?
"To thirteen and six star in space to signed to max free agents next summer. Max should the Lakers be concerned about the clippers. Yes, they should. What has happened with the clippers is they acquired the greatest executive in the history of modern basketball by four in Jerry West. And I'm sick. Like you hear a lot of stuff in industry. Well, it was really coincidence that west was here with really every single time. The Lakers overtake the Celtics as by far the most important franchise and basketball with jet under Jerry West watch. He goes to Memphis as make the playoffs. Perennially? He goes back to L A they win championships. Again, he goes to the Golden State Warriors. They become the dominant franchise in basketball, and this era he goes to the clippers and that year not three years later you blink. And they're alone in first place in the Western Conference. And with Doc Rivers, not having to worry about personnel and all this nonsense. I didn't think he was a good GM. We are reminded. Oh, yeah. Doc, Rivers painful rate. Coach the they have a great executive a great coach. And now look at this roster. Stephen there are no name brands, really gone. Hari and guys like that Tobias Harris all good players kind of middle of the pack players that their position, you know, what that's supposed to be is supposed to be a middle of the pack team. But because Jerry, West eyeing the talent and seeing what they can do and can't do and get into right pieces. And it's Doc Rivers coaching them up. They're better. Now think about this Stephen you've made the point many times playing with LeBron James it's a mixed bag for a lot of players because it's always gonna be LeBron James's show. Now, we've heard from Leonard around coli Leonard it has been widely reported. You're not sure about playing the Lakers like flippers aside and not about the Lakers spotlight. And then you add to that LeBron James's team. Now, you look at the clippers. Oh, that's a healthy functional organization with great executive any great head coach and they're playing winning ball, and it can be my teen could be heading for the clippers. And he's not the only one. Yes. The Lakers need to be concerned about not cross town rivals. They play in the same. Building about they're about their code tenants. Stateful senate. The fact that they're co-tenants is why I'm not there. If
King’s Landing: Weighing the pros and cons of every LeBron destination
