"Since, you read the beginning to and I always like to ask the question because I I like to hear the answers. Could you talk a little bit about how the novel started for you? Sort of how it came into being on the process of writing the book. Yeah, for sure I I had a big for me. It's funny I. Always feel like I have a first line I. had the first line for Yes, her name was Jerry Houser in every Wednesday at pickles on her pizza. I've had that lines, says maybe like twenty two, even though I didn't start writing close twenty four. You? Know because there's just something I delivered pizzas when I was twenty one summer. Just a night job I had because I was working like an unpaid internship and I needed like extra money like actual money. Yeah, exactly take note companies, those unpaid internships for pull shit. But Yeah I mean I always knew. I wanted to write like a delivery novel of some kind I wasn't even sure would be a delivery girl. Novel But I knew I wanted to be about sort of someone coming into falling into obsession with. This woman, this mysterious woman and I think that first line came to me, and it has like little mystery, a little sexy in a weird way to immediately it served as makes. You want to know okay. Who Is Jenny Hauser? And why is our narrator putting pickles on our pizza? You know, but the actual lake themes sort of the characters didn't really come until I had been writing short stories for about two years and sort of saw that I was writing about really similar themes like. Addiction Young Parenthood Immigrant Experience Americanization in general and I kind of wanted to see if there was a way, I can do it cohesively in one thing and. I had this realization like maybe this coming of age delivery novel could be how I do this. I read a piece you did I. Think for Your UK publisher where you talked about some of the and you that you thought it might be pizza boy for a little while. And I really liked what you said so I'm just baiting you to kind of. Best talked about how it may be changed from pizza boy to pizza girl. Yeah, of course either. Wow, that's so fun that you read that I Yeah. I was really uncomfortable with my. Sexuality if not maybe uncomfortable is not the right word. But even when I was like. Out To my friends, I wasn't something I really talked about especially with writing I was feeling. It was so new to me, and I was so shy about it that I didn't. Know if I was ready to talk about it, but you know at end of one of my workshops. We're out at the bar and one of my classmates. was thanks. You really like my work, but she kind of wished that I was writing a female narrator. You know like she wanted to sleep. She felt like I wanted to do it and just wasn't sure how she was correct. Because for so long like only way that I could talk about like romantic feelings, attraction towards women was through like a male voice. and. I am so glad that I did not write pizza boy I. Don't think that would I feel like it would have been born short story like a pretty forgettable one. You know and I. It's I really do think I. Wrote Pizza. Go at the right time when I was finally feeling a little bit more at home in my skin. Pizza girl has a better ring to it now. Yeah, exactly. How speaking. The pizza girl herself. The cover is amazing I'm so glad you like it. It's awesome I. It was I. Mean I know they don't judge a book by its cover, but I saw I was at Penguin Random House sitting on somebody's behind somebody's desk literally said like what what is that? Give it to me. That's so fun to here. Yeah, I love it. I, didn't even it's beyond my wildest dreams. You hear so many cover horror stories especially for women to got. I had this professor that told me about how for one of her books they made. It look like ridiculous. Chiklis cover to sell more copies and stuff like that, so it was very nervous that somehow someone would put like a silhouette of a woman on the cover of my book you know, and just it would look like a romance less. She'd have no head. They always have no head. Exactly, but now I. my editor asked me sort of like. What book covers are like and sent her a couple, but they weren't. Somehow they weren't quite right and I. had this t shirt from this pizza shop I like in Brooklyn Roberta's and say center a picture of that t shirt to. And then like two weeks later, she's like me in the art. Director can't get that shirt out of our heads, so we found artists, and he's down through the book. Is that cool with you? And I was like. Yeah, that's awesome. I was like I didn't even know that was the thing. So that's basically how the cover came to being, he got that in like one go to. He got allows. Isn't that crazy? Two Weeks? We changed some of the color stuff, but yeah. I love it. Yeah, my, my friend said. It's like Gatsby, Get Great Gatsby meet spring breakers meets the domino's APP or something. Yeah, the is, the is in the cover. It's true Oh my God i. Actually, really like the gets compare. Will speaking of other books? Including Gatsby maybe are there. Other books are maybe even like films or TV shows or other are that. UC In conversation with pizza. Girl was always yeah. No I I know what you mean I guess the most easy ones that comes to mind not to compare how like how good I am with these writers, because they're amazing like Mayer rest relaxation by Autism Washrag, maybe on the idiot iliffe Ottoman when.

"Which they display it as the Hanson brothers in the film and I was skating on the dashboard and fan leaned over and hit me with an Air Horn over. The head. Knocked me out. And My team came rushing off the bench and Jeff Jeff into the stands and of course Paul Newman's there and he's in the middle of it Jerry houser was in the middle of it and after they they're they're they're all button elbows with each other and saved. You see that to see that it was just like they were part of the act and I think we we give them the right initiation. Kickoff the filming one of the things that I do remember and every time. I've talked to a hockey player. I really enjoy interviewing them. Because they're Kinda the blue-collar athletes and I'm not quite sure why that is now. They're making big money. There's no doubt about it at one time. I think they probably played the sport. The pure love of it. I'm not saying that they don't now. But what is it that gives the hockey player that image of being a blue collar athlete? I think a lot of it. Is that hockey players. Get up in the morning early to go to the ranks they They get out on the ice. They have to put up with all the troubles of of getting the car started and The hanging their clothes on sale on the miners writing the buses and getting to wherever they have to be and the Mike gration up the ladder to get to the majors. He had to the Apple. And I think that there's a degree of humility in the dressing room and I think that that has a lot to do with just the fact that most of the people who play hockey really have to love it because the pins and needles from the call feet the called years The the PUCK hurts when it hits you. All of those things tend to be the way that Darwin weeded out Those those animals L. in the Galapagos and it's the same thing hockey the talk and the cool feet and the pins and needles and those are the things that weed out people who really shouldn't be hockey players and I think that that's why it's still a good of a blue collar sport. We only have forty five seconds left. Paula was it hard for you to skate off the ice for the last time both as a player or as a referee you. I had gone through a stage. Three cancer had had three operations. I had a lot of things that I had had to overcome physically. It was the cost of doing business. But I tell you when I laughed and I twelve people this I say it again. I gave you all head while I was there and I didn't have anything left and basically if I had stayed I would've been stealing.

"I like Jennifer gray a lot post-surgery or with the bigger knows I would ask her. Request but could you please have your old nose back? I would like I like the more pronounced knows on her. I thought that was better for her. All good for bills questions lovely. Yeah. Jennifer beals bell. But I'm still leaning toward either. Jennifer garner. Jennifer Aniston, but all the other jennifers, you've mentioned all get points, Jennifer Capriati. Oh, I do like her. But she was big dope. Head. I would have to ask, please not adult pet anymore. Jennifer Jones, Jennifer Jones deal, the actress from thousand years ago. Yes. Yeah, I guess, more than nineteen nineteen jobs for nettles. She's a singer. I don't know who she is Jenny slate pretty funny. I do like Jenny slate. But again, she's a big dope. Head. Did you know that she's a big user of the marijuana, that's not a dealt head? She's a dope head she I just read that she's going to be is in wine country. We're talking Anders album from decider dot com on the regular part of the show. And I think she's involved with all these funny women in the movie wine country. I think Jennifer Flavin ten aflame. Wasn't married to Sylvester Stallone. I think she still is she still is. I think so. Yeah, I'm pretty sure she is. Even Jennifer O'Neill do, like Jennifer O'Neill some reforms to. Did you when that was on the ABC three thirty movie you have to school move that did you did you like? All right. I don't know how I would feel if I was watching this movie. And I was a girl, but as a guy like niches for me, but all my friends, Mike guy friends who would watch it. We would just say that be the best thing in the world. We just thought that was an amazing situation. He found himself in Gary Grimes. Well, it's funny because people don't know let me just say, what the situation was he's on an island. He spends the summer on an island on the east coast and Jennifer Neil is there and she's beautiful. And he does odd jobs for her legitimate, odd jobs. Fixes stuff around her her. Yeah. Handy. Kid, her seasick her see shack. Steve check that just for the cubs. So, so then she finds out sadly that her husband has died in the war, and then she's lonely any. Gary Grimes which, you know, in it. How old were we when that came out in the seventies, right? I think it came out in nineteen sixty nine hundred nineteen seventy. All right. So we were already on, then I thought it was romantic and all in, and then, even as I got older. I'm like, wow. That's, that's kind of a cool story lucky. Her me, you know, me Hermes us key. Right. But then as I had boys. Yeah. I'm like that can't happen. Yeah. I've said this before there were a bunch of movies that were out when we were pre teenagers teenagers in of that era. And when you're a kid, and you watch him you. So great. But as an adult you watch him, they're very cringe-worthy, that is not accept ads not acceptable. Because how old would he have been in that movie like sixteen or seventeen? She was in her late twenties. Oh, neil. How come you don't know the pretty she really was who is Oscar has friend was Jerry Houser? Ascii was Jerry Houser her me was Gary Grimes as you mentioned. There was a third kid with glass. Mulligan was in that movie. We're not not Richard mulligan, Robert Gulligan. He added it looks very much like Richard is director. Robert, okay. Directed it. Maybe here, let me pull it up from nineteen seventy-one, by the way, seventy one director, Robert Mulligan's, he related to Richard because they okay he they look so much alike. Gary Grimes was her me wanted to know how old he was at the time I think his character would have been about sixteen. I think he was probably around there. He wasn't in many other things he was in the Cowboys. The John Wayne movie in one or two other minor movies. But nothing major the Curie Houser was in a thousand things. Was on, we'll get by with. We'll get by that was a sitcom with pulse survey. No. Appall servino. He was sitcom Mira Sorvino to. Oh, I'm Daria. Jerry. Oh, I know him as an adult. Oh, that's right. He does the voice, he still does someone slam. So, yeah. Curly hair. Yeah. Yeah. Kind of Michael Keane. Yes. But not as good looking like a right, like a goofy, like before they perfected, Michael on. They were just kind of put this on the joint board. We'll see how it looks Jerry Houser still here. He does commercials all the time. Still hear his voice on commercials. All right. Somebody says can we stop saying that Angelina Jolie, still Brad Pitt away from Jan? He wasn't a five year old you know, technically that's correct. We have to put as much blame on Brad Pitt his engine Lena, Julie and someone wants to know if you would like Jennifer Coolidge. Oh, she's interesting. Stiffler flers. Mom. She's interesting. But I still think, right. New feel on this. Yes. Yes, it does about now. Yeah. All right. So let's say hypothetically, you won a Jennifer. It could Jennifer Aniston. It could be Jennifer Connelly. It could be horri- love Hewitt's Lopez Hewitt for a while. But Bill back down poster of her in college. She's the one way crossed off first on my list. Guys. Thanks ninety. Eight when can't hardly wait came out. That was that was that was my thing. Thing. "Was to Joan had a weird side of her. And maybe she did all the fashioned stuff. So I could see her being. Clint black who western star. Yeah. And he seems pretty mellow. But he's allegedly a best friend of Dennis Rodman. Yeah, baby. Lisa. Hartman. Yes. Very good. I think they might still be. TV's. Tabitha. She played Tabitha where they brought it back years later. They didn't give it to Aaron Murphy. Like we had all hoped. The original Tabitha he was accused. I didn't see her as an adult so I don't know. She. She looks good. She's still shows up on talk shows and stuff. Jesse james? You know, this is the motorcycle fix guy who was with Sandra Bullock for awhile that went up. And he's friends with Dennis Rodman. Yeah. That wouldn't actually. Hanging that would make sense some pairing TAT's tattoos and piercings and stuff. Yeah. That would make sense. Phil jackson. The very zen Yogi. Phil jackson. Really? I can kind of see that in, like a father son, kind of away. Yeah. You know, that's all I have for his best friend. That's a strange list of folks. I read your list. Bill voice. Here's your list, and compare and Chuck Daly is Dennis, Rodman's list, and your list. And then another excuse me. Other entertainment news. Did I read somewhere that Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt might be getting back together? That's been hinted at the in the tabloids how that will never happen. Do you believe that to be true, if you're her, I mean, depending on how much she really loved him. Right. And he, he had been stolen away. By Angelina Jolie. So if you're her you have to say to yourself would do I give this guy a second chance? Oh, sure. He's handsome. But do I want to give them a second chance after somebody wants stole him away? Would you give them a second chance if it was Brad Pitt? Yeah. Give them five ten it was. What if it was somebody who wasn't quite as devastating devilishly? Good looking as Brad Pitt. Would you stick in the second chance? She has had some failed relationships, which just amazes me. Right. She seems to there's always a she's always in some kind of a rebound mode. There's always some guy that you go finally, she has found the right guy who appreciates her. And then it goes, south Taylor swift has that same thing going. Yeah. But I think Taylor does it intentionally so she can write another song. Oh, there could be something there. And remember that Jennifer Aniston married that Justin Theroux, and they seemed happy for a little while. Well over at their house for dinner. No, I you know, I I'm, I'm our generations, Rona Barrett. Although now she's suing me because you can't be our generation's wrote a Barrett, but they always seem compatible, they seem to be having a good time and then like like all other romances. So then I always wonder is that is it is it her or she picking the wrong guys? What's going on there? I'm sorry. I don't think she can do any wrong. I love her. I think she's great. I think she see. I'm not even saying that, you know, I'd like to be here best friend because there's no way possible. We, you already have a fake bus ride. You have to fake can best friend best friends. If your best friends don't get along, then you're in trouble. Yeah. I guess, you know, all right. I'll keep it to one Kelly Clark's Kelly Clarkson, fake Kelly Clarkson in fiction or fairness and don't get along your Europe. The river without a canoe. I know that in the water use that analogy for my whole life. And finally got it in I love her. I love Jennifer Aniston. She doesn't like her wobbly, but that's just the new one was czar. She's super fit at fifty but she doesn't like her wildly. But if I was given a choice of I could have any of the Jennifer's. It would be very tough to choose between Jennifer Aniston. And now I got another one just came by garner. Jennifer garner is way up there for me. What's why hawk Jennifer garner? That's what you'd like to do. All right. Suing you. Call my lawyer. You don't really have a look the brisk Mun brothers, rift link-up link brothers, definitely Bailey flea Bailey. Jennifer garner's. All right. She's no Aniston. So I would also put Jennifer Conley in that mix. He's crazy. Why did you say I don't know she just crazy. But if somebody was giving me if I won the prize, you get to keep any Jennifer you want. I'd have a very hard time. Choosing between Jennifer garner. Jennifer aniston. Jennifer Aniston smoke. So that's a point against she still does she stopped smoking. I don't know. I don't keep up with the relationships break up 'cause she's irritable, because she stopped smoking, maybe and Jennifer garner. The tough thing there is that Ben Affleck keeps showing up like every time you okay? Finally, he's out of her life. He's given up. Finally, then he comes in like did you see the thing yesterday? He was saying what a great mom, she is. He was going out of his way to be nice to her so gotta take that into account too. What about Jennifer? Lopez Jlo's Jennifer Lawrence would be in the mix. Jennifer Lopez would be in the mix. Who's the one that was on party of five? There's a Jennifer on there for. There's some Jennifer on that show. Garth. No. Although she bad, either. This would be tough. If I want one the you can keep any Jennifer contest. I'd have to take a month to think about this because there's too many good ones. How dare you make fun of me having a fake best friend, when you have a fig, Jennifer. Contest though. All brought to you by American weather makers, what's outlets cold American weather maker, heating and cooling. The sixty minute man there has to be more Jennifer Hudson. Great. Who else there's a couple of others? There's just something about that name if you name love Hewitt, Jennifer love Hewitt's, the one, you know on her. I don't think I'd be the first one I'm sorry if you're listening, Jennifer love Hewitt. But I think she'd be the first one, I would cross off, you know, why allies on a talk show. Once she was on Rosie o'donald show. Once this is years and years ago before I started a relationship. I could watch any show I wanted, but now it has to be the view and Jeter full of fuel is on. And she said Rosie O'Donnell, I wish people would just call me love. And then Rosie o'donald just called her love through the rest of the interview and it made my stomach hurt. I was watching it going. That's ridiculous. Just call me love. There's Jennifer McCarthy. I guess she technically goes. Yeah. That's too much for me. Because she's had a Walberg. Yeah. Jennifer Tilly remember, her great, actress, she's interesting type two. Interesting. Jennifer, Jason Leigh. Interesting again, but not, not in my opinion NAT for you not up to the level of the other jennifers that we've mentioned Jennifer gray. I like Jennifer grey, allied, post-surgery or with the bigger knows I would ask her. I know. Request but could you please have your old nose back? I would like I like the more pronounced knows on her. I thought that was better for her. He's all good for Beal's questions lovely. Yeah. Jennifer beals. No. But I'm still leaning toward either Jennifer garner. Jennifer Aniston, but all the other jennifers, you've mentioned all get points, Jennifer Capriati. Oh, I do like her. But she was big dope. So, so then she finds out sadly that her husband has died in the war, and then she's lonely, Gary Grimes, which, you know, in it, how old were we when that came out in the seventies, right? I came out in nineteen sixty nineteen seventy all right? So we were. Yeah. I thought it was romantic and all in, and then, even as I got older. I'm like, wow. That's, that's kind of cool story. Her me, you know, for me. Hermes ascii. But then as I had boys. Yeah. I'm like that can't happen. Yeah. I've said this before there were a bunch of movies that were out when we were pre teenagers teenagers, and of that era, and when you're a kid, and you watch y so great, but as an adult, you watch them, they're very cringe-worthy, that is not accept not acceptable. How old would he have been in that movie like sixteen or seventeen? And she was in her late twenties. Oh, neil. Pretty. She really was. Who is Oskoui, his friend was Jerry Houser? Ascii was Jerry Houser her was Gary Grimes as you mentioned. There was a third kid with glass. Mulligan was in that movie. Not, not Richard mulligan. Robert Gulligan at looks very much. Like Richard director a revolt. Okay. Directed at maybe here, let me pull it up from nineteen seventy-one, by the way, seventy one. Director Robert mulligan related to Richard because they broke okay? They look so much alike. Gary Grimes was her me wanted to know how old he was at the time I think his character would about sixteen. I think he was probably around there. He wasn't in many other things he was in the Cowboys. The John Wayne movie, and one or two other minor movies, but nothing major. But Kerry, Houser was in a thousand things. Was muffin. We'll get by what's, we'll get by. That was a succumb with pulse survey. No. Appall servino. He was sitcom Mira Sorvino. Oh, I'm Daria fair. Jerry. Oh, I know him as an adult. Oh, that's right. He does the voice, he still does so much. Yeah. Curly hair. Yeah. Yeah. Kind of a Michael onto Qianlong, but not as good looking, like, right. Like a goofy like before they perfected Mike along when they were just kind of put this on the joint board. We'll see how it looks that was Jerry Houser still here. He does commercials all the time. Still hear his voice on commercials. All right. Somebody says can we stop saying that Angelina Jolie, still Brad Pitt away from Jan? He wasn't a five year old you know, technically that's correct. We have to put as much blame on Brad Pitt as on, engine Lena, Julie and someone wants to know if you would like Jennifer Coolidge. Oh, she's interesting stiffler. Mom. She's interesting. But I still think, right. You feel on this. It does about now. All right. So let's say hypothetically, you won a Jennifer. It could be Jennifer Aniston. It could be Jennifer Connelly. It could be warrants. Love Hewitt's Lopez for love Hewitt for a while. But Bill back down poster of her in college. She's the one crossed off first on my list. Guys can't hardly wait came out. That was that was that was. My thing. Interesting..

"Well, well lis. Yes. Girl. Nancy Pelosi's figure the house says she will not pursue impeachment against the president says just eight worth it. He's not worth. He's not worth it. This kind of the same thing. He's not worth it. And I think she's saying that she's she's recognizing that the constitution presents a bar for impeachment. The bar has got to be set very high, and she's thinking more quarter public opinion, my friend because if you don't have Republicans on board here, and it seems like just a partisan thing then that won't go well for the Democrats and twenty twenty because they will be overplaying their hand, a boomerang effect as it were. Again, I think we have to wait for the report to come out. And they plan be Jerry Nadler is their plan c. Look, I don't have any plan ABC. I'm just waiting to see how this thing unfolds. But I do think that redacted Muller report. Meaning there's nothing to it except you see one of those things where you you have a piece of paper and just a bunch of like a kid that's marked through it with a black marker see, you know, what I'm talking about. A couple of words here the does and the butts, and then just everything else is marked out something major in it. I'm sure that that will get out somehow help Sam. Redact like, the Russian collusion part that doesn't exist. Right. No. No. I never really bought that argument. Right. I kept an open mind. And maybe maybe it will be in the report and they'll shock everybody. Is that in this? Maybe some Trump people who voted for for Donald Trump will find this insulting. I think they'll agree with me kind of keeping their their mind open on this. I think that the Trump campaign they couldn't collude with each other. In other words, it was completely dysfunctional and disorganized. It was all Trump campaign. Just let Trump Trump. Yeah. He tweeted he owned those rallies, and he outworked Hillary Clinton that was he had a decisive clear message, you agree or disagree with it. But he had definitive themes and she didn't. But overall there was no real campaign. It was all him. Here's the Michael Jordan like back in like eighty seventy and no team around him and still somehow got them to the playoffs before they got the crappy. None by the pistons a story for another time. I don't know. Yeah. Anyway, the point is that Aron jaylo. Yes. Yes. That is the real news. The real news. I think is if you're jaylo are you kind of thinking, I know he's my husband and everything. But I'm pretty sure that I wanna put one of those magnums on one of the Jimmy's because he's been around a little bit with some not. So pure people. You don't know where that thing's been? I think is what I'm trying to say who's dated back in the back in the day. Well, Donna right seventeen years older. So he likes to cougar thing apparently. Hey, all right. Which is fine. I have no problem with that. Actually, when it's the reverse when it's a older man, and a younger woman, you wouldn't say a thing about it. You would be saying cougar. I mean, come on. To saying you go older, it's cougar. He does not the reverse for a man and a woman. I mean when the mandates a younger woman when the woman dates the man that's the sugar daddy and everybody gets nicknames in these situations. Whatever. Anyway, anyway, then he went to Bethany Frankel, right? She's a real housewives of New York, which I know you watch all night. I'm just rushing home right now. I've got my TV set on right? And that's after she divorced her. First husband, right? So okay. And then Kate Hudson. Right. Who's dated a couple of guys in her in her time? That's fine. That was probably the best. He did. I think he got Cameron Diaz. But he didn't get there's something about Mary Cameron Diaz. He got. You know, the the the older orangey version of Cameron Diaz orangey version there oppose the movie that she did with Ashton kosher, and they both get married in Las Vegas and. Yes. The best in the mask. That's that's the highlight of camera. Did I agree with anything after that? It was downhill don't want any given Sunday. You to stop Stein. There's something about Mary. I mean that was the girl you fell in love with right? No Vanilla Sky. Okay. Kills Tom Cruise is the point. Okay. You know what I'm talking hero. Very checkered path. There we go. Trevor let's get I want to go through girls that he dated so Cameron Diaz in two thousand ten eleven listening, then civic, you get through this, please. Please fast. Horry wilson. She. Oh, wow. He went out with a former WWE wrestling. She was the. Yeah. For more than three years sums up on what their kids would look like if that actually somehow came to fruition because he you know, like a-rod. He wasn't very good and big spots. I guess, and you know, he cheated, obviously. But, you know, that's that's an athlete. I mean, the guy is still ripped Demi Moore dated. He did like older women. Wow. Yeah. So he went to Tori Wilson. And then Demi and ironically enough that was after she was separated from Ashton Kutcher. So he likes divorce women to my friend. Dave has a theory on divorce one. I'll share it another time. Let's see. Tenure Tracy talking about more than fifty like dating divorced women, my friend. Dave narrative has ended in divorce found they had a certain morally, casual attitude. Oh my God. Don't yell at me. I'll get him in studio sometime he'll share. He just got. He just got married. He had a kid. I got an invitation to actually he didn't get married to Vegas, and now the real like the backup wedding like the real wedding is going to be in November on radio, and that you might want to not share some of these things and a floss my teeth foam talking to you. Oh, please. Don't floss your being delayed launch. Yeah. Yeah. Please be. No, no, okay. I'm I'll just have really tight Jerry Houser piece wedged between two twenty four and twenty three right now, and it hurts listeners, please actually. I'm stuck in a studio with this, man. And this. If you're having fun come on. Not at all not even a little bit. No, okay. Anyway, I was up until. If you don't wanna be here. What don't you make.

"Ridell, which is a play on the word riddle. So his 'nigma. Yeah. Exactly. So it's interesting just think is a little bit weird that it's a kid that has I don't know. But I still like to character. He has a very unique voice for sure. Yeah. Yeah. What are they gonna do? If this actor has to move on. I don't know. I do like that recurring theme in this episode where he apparently walks very quietly or something, and he keeps scaring Livia. Yeah. He you know, she like jumps that. He's like I just walked up. She said well walk louder. Exactly the other thing too about this. Wouldn't it make more sense for some anonymous donor to contact the parents rather than the kid directly? Like, you think that their parents should have been in all that in subway, but a little bit more. But there was a funny thing I did like how he oh. Maury orders. A coconut milk dark chocolate monkey auto asks win if get one isn't necessarily say I would like to have. But I can I get and which like, yeah, if you go to coffee shop. Come on. Yeah. I think we need to put a coffee shop in wit's end. Totally who's thinking about that too. I wasn't Jillian do that. She could be. That's Rene could so. Actual show. That's right. And that's a topic for the alternate. Reality of odyssey. No just picked up on this even though. Zoey. Zoey. Even though Susan who's been in episodes prior to this one. I just realized that the voice of that character is April Hong who was the actress who played the little girl in daughters. Love the episode that we were in the studio watching more. So she now she's playing this recurring character. So that's cool. Because that was her first time working with odyssey was on her episode. That's right. That was a while ago. Yeah. It was crazy seems like ages ago, but I just remember her talking after the session with I remember it was with filler with Dave. But saying how much she enjoyed doing the show and asking if she could get copies of it after it released remember her asking about that. So let's call that they're using her again. She's she's a great actress. Oh, yeah. For sure. All right episode, eight fifty four not what I expected. What were you expecting expect the unexpected? Right. So apparently they were expecting the expected. This was written by Kathy Buchanan. We got Zoe and Jay gin and hilarity in a funeral home. How how? You'll love Jay fainting all over the place at Zoe not having any problems with had elite. It was just Bill areas and Zoe's all upset about her where she got assigned, and like, you know, if you to beauty salon, they say hope to see next month. Nobody ever says that to a funeral director. All the funeral jokes. Man. I thought about writing. Into the show. But. Stop great. I knew you were gonna like that just thinking this is right up. Roy's alley. It was great and what a quirky name, Mr. Cohen. What in the world that come from candy going a California thing always at a town Kalinga lingo Leah. Leah. I dunno. It was so hilarious voice to say. He sounds like such a dull. He sounds like. Aubrey in Bethany shepherds dad kind of. Yeah. Is through a little dawn. What was the name was? Who play he played jellyfish? Yeah. He's kind of sound like that a little bit. I don't notice name. So Jerry Houser is that jellyfish. Yeah. According to the Wikki, it is unknown who which Clinger's played by. But I bet you would be Jerry Houser sound a lot like him. It could have been or maybe it was Fred tat ashore to because I think I heard him in credits on this album several times, and he does he does a ton of all kinds of he did that really deep voice of Hugo wells, and all the way to all kinds of crazy voices. Yeah. Pretty amazing. The new Corey Burton kind of thing he has pretty awesome. He's great. Is that once seen though are were Jay's talking about how he copied off her test. So just so he could impact the yes. And he's like don't you think that's swoon worthy? He's like, no. It's creepy. Well, when you're sitting on a coffin, anything sounds creepy. This. It's tough. But I think this might be my favorite one in the it was good would Jillian and pull halls and the whole bit. You know, I love the lady at the courthouse. So funny typical dislike you know. Basically. You're wasting my lunch break. Yeah. A loved it in and Emily gets placed at a law firm. I thought that was interesting. And I thought you'd be a judge I thought well, usually judges are lawyers. I so kind of makes sense for. I think it's interesting because we can already explored this before what was that like career day go to work with your parents day or something like that where she went to with her dad some something like that. I don't remember what exactly on. All right. Like she had two. Oh, it was the wasn't when she took that test, and they got mixed up. And. Yeah, Emily, the genius. Oh that she goes with her to work because he wanted to shore where he worked and all that stuff. That's what it was. Yeah. But yeah, this was just a really great episode. And also love hearing from Jason. Yeah. The episodes with him in lately seemed like there too few. Yeah. Exactly. Give us more. Which sounds like we probably will be getting work. I was just listening the other day to the day. Ambro stood still. I miss this Jason. Yeah. Can't have both. They they managed to bring again all kinds of so so that brings us to the last episode of this album, amber, eight fifty five divided. We fall in. This was the only one of the. Well, I think this is the only one that has a really serious overtone to England. The most of the other ones have a lot of comedy choice. We have the one with Paul houses nephew in the hospital that kind of thing which was more of a serious thing. But that wasn't like the main focus of the episode in this one the the main focus is a oh something's gonna go wrong. But there's a lot of comedy in it. I mean, you gene in Katrina. And and Eugene in bucket. Yeah. Yeah. It's again every single episode had a lot of comedy death entire album. This one was written by Cathy began in this. Well, hilarious stuff in here. Oh, man to the diaper. Yes. Class like. Hugh broker league. Broke her leg to referencing. What happened to buck? Oh, that's right. I love books vocabulary. Oh, man. I love it how buck can understand your jeans. You know, stream of just big words. And he's like he said this, you know, it's so funny in how buck is like picking up on some Eugene's lingo into. I think that the teacher of the class when they were trying to do. The the diaper says something about the Kalina baby or a child or something. And he's like, it's not a baby. It's a dull just has this glassy eyed stares. I think this is I first of all will Ryan was fabulous in this episode. Yes. Oh, yes. Yes. Yes. And this is one of the first ones in a while where we've where we've seen a lot of range of emotions from Eugene in the single episode like he's in this in this position where he's feeling a little inadequate, right? So he's got a portray that, but there's also some humor, and then there's some really serious kind of heartfelt moments between him in buck. So there's a lot going on with this with Eugene's character in this episode, and I really really liked it. Yeah. I dislike the ending on this. One was perfect. Yes, perfect. I loved it. This remind anybody of the last lamp lighter. Yeah. Kinda sorta suppose supposed to that keeps continues. Of course, I'm sure just coins. Book, and yes, you know, who the writer of both of these drums where your point. Boy, I totally missed that for your point. Wow. Wow. Notice pretty funny, but they both fit. Yeah. Stories and the characters involved made sense. I just thought it was a little interesting, but nothing new under the sun as they say, right? Right. Right. And I'm sure it was there was not in any kind of intentional. No, you know. 'cause there the whole odyssey team has their map for where the show is going, months and months and months right years. It did fit both story like the situation that Finian's going through in the situation that Eugenie Katrina or in are similar in this instance, now, so it makes sense overall. Absolutely love this album. Every single episode of these are episodes that I will listen to again and again. Yeah, that's kind of one of the gauges for me. Yes. We'll I really just grab this episode at any point in listed again. 'cause I loved it so much all of these. Yes. Yeah. One interesting note is on the AM. Wicky? There's actually two versions of the cover art. So I guess on the the digital download there is a different version. So the scene is from the first episode with Zoe Olivia on the on their talk show with Jay trying to stuff his mouth with all the jelly beans. But DAC the difference there. Yeah. The picture there's. Yeah. There's a mirror in the background on one. And there isn't one on the other. So I don't understand why they possessed interesting. I just found this really cool feature on the club. I didn't realize it was. But it's called like the artists, something whatever. But it takes you through each step. Gary Locke does on these album arts indifferent changes he makes to him. And it's the coolest thing on the club. Like, I didn't. I never knew it was on the net. The dick through the club. Like when you say when you start this adventure, or whatever or whatever there's a section in there called the scrapbook or something like that. And I'm probably getting this wrong. But it takes you through. How he starts at out. You know? Okay. We wanted to change this in. It's like several several images in different changes. He makes to it. That is so cool at the site. He'd never get the C. Then when I saw this. I'm like, oh, yeah. That makes a lot of sense. Yeah. I haven't even seen. I haven't seen that feature either. While if you want to check this out, of course, you can just go over to the Iowa key. But in the show notes is a. A couple of screen shots show. You the two different versions. But I thought that was interesting. Yeah. Two thumbs up for this album. Really great job odyssey team. This is a this one is a five star. Oh, yeah. Album for sure excellent taste stuff. So what are your show?

"In the AllState skyline studio here till five AM. It's Friday all the regular Friday features are coming up, and we're also going to talk about ranking the best movie theater candy. We've got some more local entertainment stories for two thousand eighteen to cover and much more. Our phone number three one nine eight one seven two hundred for talking tax. We're talking with Jonathan Jackson was the author of the making of slapshot I'm hosting a great screening of it on Tuesday night. January eighth at the AMC Rosemont eighteen to AMC theaters dot com. Reserve your seats now for that that night of watching one of the greatest movies ever made. And let's get back to Jonathan Johnson. Welcome back. Hey, Nick, thanks for having me on. I I really appreciate you. Give me the time here this morning. Absolutely. My pleasure. Thank you for for staying up with us. So it all starts the movie. It all starts with Nancy doubt. Can we talk a little bit about that? How that began who she is. NC don't is a screenwriter. I'm not sure she's reading anything nowadays. I don't believe that she has. And she had a younger brother named doubts who was a hockey player with some professional aspirations and he ended up in Johnstown playing for a hockey team called the Johnstown jets. This was make teams seventy three seventy four and she was talking with him about the crazy stories that you was going through your a hockey player in this league called the North American Hockey League, two steps below the NHL. And so she went to visit him, and she was just like just really taken with the people that she met the stories the experiences. So she started visiting the dressing room during their game certain practices, and sort of recording their conversations and then after she left and went back to wherever she was living. I think she might have been in California at that time. But she left the tape recorder was Ned and asked him to keep recording the conversations and address your room and sending tapes, and she wrote a lot of the scripts, you know, based on the dialogue out the actual Johnstown jets hockey team and some of those players actually ended up in the movie playing sexual burdens of of their real selves. Yeah. That's why there's such a a an absolute authenticity to that movie. And I think that's one of the reasons why it appeal so much to actual hockey players because it's real this is the way this is the way it was at that time. It absolutely was very real. But unfortunately, that that led to some some trouble when they were trying to get the movie made because of course, this was full of all kinds of vanities, sanity and. Up until up until that moment in the seventies. You know, stuff like that was not I heard in in major Hollywood motion pictures, and nobody wanted to accept that professional athletes would ever talk like that. But, but of course, they did. It was just the first time that that we accept reality and tell everybody where it was shots a firm for authenticity purposes because it takes place in Charleston. What most of it takes place in Charleston when they're not on the road. Yeah. Charlestown is Johnstown, Pennsylvania. And that's where the movie was was mainly filmed and the they secure the cooperation of the hockey team. So the Johnstown jets became the Charlestown chiefs and Johnstown became Charles, Charlestown and. Yeah. They they used a lot of local places. You know, there's the statue of the dog in the in the park, which by the way, Jonathan which by the way, the statue of dog inspires my favorite line in the movie. I can't say I can't say it on it. It's it's Lindsey Krause reaction to the story behind the dog. It's my favorite line in the. The dog was Saint Charles down making thirty. Exactly. Yeah. So. Go ahead. Yes, only they they weren't sure. Whether they were going to film the movie, but. You know, like Nancy and both felt that you know, if they wanted to it really to be fantastic, then it should be. You know, where the where the team had really played. And it was a Cinderella story. Yeah. So real the they came from basically out of nowhere to earn a playoff spot. They won the championship in nineteen seventy five. And so basically what you're seeing is story of that team. It's it's it's almost like a quasi documentary. And so it was only fitting that it was filmed primarily in the town where it had started in the first place where the Hanson brothers come from. Hanson brothers. The Williams are Carlson. There's. Carlson Steve Carlson and Dave Hansen. And they're all from Minnesota. And there were actually were three Carlson brothers. Jesse Jackson Steve as well as David Hanson there. So there were the four Minnesota boys and the Johnstown jets, I should add. They were a fun club of the Minnesota fighting saints of the W H A. The fighting saints sent a bunch of guys including the call since and date Hanson to Johnstown, and so in the script, you know, Nancy transpose their surnames. So the Carlson brothers became the Hanson brothers, and Dave killer Hanson became Dave killer Carlson. Gotcha him, right. So. Yeah. So one of the Carlson brothers, Jack. He got called up to Minnesota W H A that team folded in mid season. And he went to Edmonton to play for the Oilers. And so he wasn't available to play his self in the movie because date Hanson was close with the brothers. They moved him over to play Jack Hanson, and then they hired actor Jerry Houser to play the role of days cook chill Carlson, right which also inspires one of my favorite, one of my favorite lines in the movie is Dave's of mess. That's one of my fits also. Killer. Dave mess. So let's talk a little bit about what the what the filming was like, I'm sure all the guys got along. I'm sure they had they had to spend a lot of time together understand the Paul Newman was like the was like sort of a beer animal during the making of the movie. Yeah. He he he drank Coors at the time. That was his preferred brand, and he had a bunch of cases, you know, shipped to Pennsylvania. So he could drink it while he was while he was there filming the movie, and they would go out to the it was like real hockey team. They went out drinking. He was a regular guy. He bought he bought around when it was his turn to do. So and and they drank and addressing you're in between scenes because they would film all day. But they would only they'd be there all day, but they would only stomach certain parts dangerous of the time. They would just go out and and horse round of the ice and drink beer in the dressing room. It was just like just like a real hockey team. Yeah. And they did I mean, it's really impressive. Because a lot of the guys did their own skating. And I know I'm talking outside of the actual hockey players that they put in the movie the actors did some really pretty pretty impressive skating, including Newman. Yeah. They they hired actors who could skate who could carry it off. Michael aren't keen being one the guy who played net. Great and he had played division one at university of New Hampshire. So in addition to being accomplished actor he was a very accomplished hockey player and probably could've played minor the dairy leased a if not in the NHL. There are any number of guys a lot of Kadian. You got hired to make the moving here. And yeah. You've been growing up in Cleveland, his father owned a sporting goods store. So he had grown up playing winter sports and go when he got on skates. It was it took a little while to get back into sure. Into skating for me was not a particularly strong skater. But he could get from point eight point b without you know, without looking back. Yeah. Those guys those guys who come out at the end when they when they when they put that team together the killer team at the end for the championship game. A lot of those guys were real players. Right. I mean, the guy who played who played oglethorpe. That's no doubt. The brother of the screen. And he and he was kind of a pacifist character real life. Basically, that's who had Brayton is based on doubt. And for him to play the bull Yola for was was was a real twist. But but he enjoyed his his little bit of screen time there as well as being a consultant to coordinate with all the hockey scenes who are some of the people that you talk to in the book. Oh, jeez. Talked to a lot of people, and what what really made this a rewarding experience was I talked to somebody and tell them what I was doing. And then they would say, oh, well, have you talked to someone? So they would put me in touch with the next poster. And so nobody really quickly. So I was able to talk to a lot of the a lot of the actors who who's the movie as well as some of the hockey players who played in the movie and also you got like the NHL readily, he he was extra in the movie. Oh, okay. And also, you got Michael Michael on keen to do the view the forward, and it's really a great forward to. Yeah. He was really really kind and really gracious. And and I guess a kind of sprung up over the years that that he was kind of standoffish and didn't really want anything to do with the movie, and I couldn't be further from the truth. He was he was always here. He's always been very proud of his role movie. And he was really kind and talking with me and agreeing to write the foreword, and yeah, I I really appreciated that still do to this. Well, listen, Jonathan it's been such a pleasure talking to you, man.
