Interview With Matthew McConaughey
"Matthew. Welcome to the show. Good to be here. Tim. How are you sir? I'm doing very well, and I have just an embarrassment of riches in front of me in terms of notes that I would love to to take some stab at covering even a portion of and I thought we could begin with a little backstory for those people who know your work perhaps not your personal story. Let's paint a picture of your parents now lives in preparation for this conversation doing some homework and I came across a quote of yours feel free to fact, check this of course is from the Guardian but it says one of the great images I have my father is on the phone with a cigarette at the airport on the pay phone always peddling. Peddling pipe and how What is what is that for those who don't know been coupling? So he ruin the old business and to drill you obviously pipe couplings connect the pipe to drill for oil. So Dad was in the pipe coupling business and he was he would call it peddling pipe, Paralympic no John Pendant peddling pipe and that twenty did on the phone eight to six, and then he hit the road and Go make personal appearances China. So pipe, he started off as a truck driver than Texaco station down you've Audi we moved to longview Texas oil boom within like six months after being in Longview. Dad like twenty six employees under him. That's how big of an oil boom was, and then obviously at that business through I think around eighty two and he kind of held on from there he was always. Always, peddler is line was great. He was always be never did it never went bankrupt and that was a piece of honor for him not to go bankrupt but he was always after all boom sort of busted he was always act boys if I could just. I just hit a lick and he never did hit that lick. But if if he lick is. Big Sale Olympic is a big cow lick is okay Mr. Jim Magana. Hey I want all my pipe from you and we're going to drill two hundred thousand feet above abide. So says huge count on my Gosh I'm going to supply the pipe to this one large account that would be a lick he never quite yet. So we're going to jump to the other track with mom for a second here and at like to have conversation about or description maybe of mink oil. Could you tell us how oil entered your life? Please I would not be here talking to you right now if it wasn't for the oil of Meek Yeah It was about home fourteen, fifteen years old ninth grade adolescence. My mom starts pedaling again Pentland Milan family was pedaling something my mom starts pedaling this oil of me product door to door sales. Look here you put this mink oil on your face it brings out all the impurities that you have and watch those impurities all come out. You then have clear glowing in for the rest of your life that was sort of the sales pitch right? Well, I'm fifteen I got a few pimples as any fifteen year old does one night. My mom goes well, you should choose this all. Great you're let me do that. Sure. So I started putting this oil make on my face every night before I go to bed, and after about a week, I wake up and got more pimples than I had a week. And I check in the mirror go to Mama as don't she goes that exactly what is supposed to to pull out all the impurities keep doing it stick with it sure. I'd just religiously keep putting it on after two weeks. Now seem to be run into a problem. He I've got I've. got a whole full of pimples and it's it's it's getting pretty severe back. She's Oh. Wow. You've just got more impurities then I thought you just keep keep doing it going to keep bringing out those impurities I keep it up three weeks. Go by now I've got full blown acne and I'm really concerned my mom's staying on with no stick with it all coming out well I sneak off to the dermatologist on my own. And this was not my mom's recommendation I, sneak there on. In, take a bottle of this Mako. Doc Look at my face. This is put on your face shown this bodies liberty reads ladies like Oh no, no, no, no, no no. No this is i. someone that's like forty year old or not a teenage child who's got oily pours anyway this blocking your pores your pores can't breathe. You are ten days away from having ice pick holes in your face from acne get you off this. Okay as we also have to get you on this stuff got accutane. It's a years worth of medicine. It will dry you up there will have its complications, but it'll be better than in the acting that you can have APSO boom. I could on the accutane off the oil of make and around that time my dad who's always as peddling and look and how to hit lick. says. Damn Boy I. We got a lawsuit against his company. Them becoming I mean you're you're looking at me look you. You're all swollen up. So he takes me to see lawyer remember lawyers, Jerry hairs. So I'm sitting down with my dad and his lawyer Jerry Harrison new think we got a case and he asked me like you know, hey, did you confidence lower? We know with these these pimples you've got this acne down by guess Sir because we are you doing good with the girls and I said, no, sir, not at all he his eyes light up and I can tell that even at my age fifteen he he's building his case goes. Emotional. Distress you were under emotional are under emotional distress and I look at them and I'm like Sure Yeah Moshe stress in Jerry's. Gosh Dog, we can get thirty five to fifty thousand dollars. Emotional distress go long way Jim Medaglia caught. At fifty thousand dollars a way to goes on, and so that's getting all excited about this deal. We're GONNA make fifty thousand dollars off of my emotional distress is youngest son. So anyway, meanwhile on accutane. Takes a year to get clear up and you get Scaly Dandruff in your knees. Hurt you get slits in your mouth and everything else but much better than this acne and this Jackie clear in this acne up on my faith well, as lawsuits go they drag on awhile. So come two years later I'm back in Jerry Harrison office sitting across the table from the from the defense attorney and now my Hackley's cleared up. Okay and this lawyer sits there and starts off the conversation with us. Oh my gosh. Must have been so emotionally distressful and I'm like he's Lavin Mu Softball here I'm going to knock this out of the par. Yes. It was highly emotional distressful and he's got you confidence was down. He did it again with this guy dude he's a horrible. Tea In me up we're just it out apart. Yes. It was almost the distressful. My confidence was low wasn't doing well with girls. I mean man it was bad stuff. Sir and I'm sitting here thinking we got this case.

"Green fades away, and you get to see all the beautiful beta carotene, otherwise known as yellow and red orange leaves leaves have old this orange in them because it's their sunscreen beta carotene, basically protects the leaf from Sunday. But it's really weird that a colored chemical that protects leaves from the sun, which opened the routes. It was clearly genetic mutation mistake. I mean, the Ritz are underground never see the sunlight and yet because they're attractive and because people like the way they looked they built up in root tissue through selection. And we therefore had colored pigment to carrots. And so the fact that we get, you know, an incredible nutritional benefit from it as well as the visual appeal is just a just a beautiful thing that nutritional benefit has recently become even more incredible breeders like win and Phil have been mixing up the genetic material of carrots by breeding them and they've managed something amazing. They able to pack even more beta carotene into these little beta carotene vessels, and carrot sells fifty percent more. It's really amazing. If you look at a modern, carrot the beta carotene that's present in the root is so abundant. It's extraordinarily abundant such that it is in crystalline form. It's almost as though it's almost like overstuffed these orange pigments, the beta carotene there also in all the cool multicolor purple and yellow carrots too. But do those purple and yellow guys have other pigments with equally awesome health benefits, which would maybe make them better for you than plain old, orange all the carrots have crowd. Loyd's. And of course, crinoids great all except the white cards that is, but the other colors, the red the yellow the purple those to have some other chemicals red, for instance, that has like opinion that's the same chemical in a tomato, the purple colors, anthocyanins, anthocyanins are ubiquitous, you know, they're in lots of fruits or the color of the blueberries, for example. And they're they're thought to be really strong antioxidants says that the jury is still out about how important antioxidants are for us, the scientists going back and forth. But while we wait for the Jerry hair PB, purple carrots are the best all that carotene in groovy anthocyanins to or maybe the red ones with lycopene are they Bishop than our inch. You know, I don't think. So I I don't think it's anyone healthier than the other. I think the modern carrot today. The modern western carotene, carrot which is going to have lateen beta carotene alpha carotene in it is extremely healthy in short. They're all carrots. They're all great. And I would focus more on. How you cook it and let me let me explain. The crowd noise are fat soluble so they will be much more bioavailable if you have lipids in your diet. Maybe this is the the argument for carrot cake. I don't know probably it should be right. That it has frosting. It's got fat in it. Heck? Yeah. Cara cake, which is my favorite and also a surprisingly recent invention. "Right. Who just joined us a few minutes ago? And he really. He really stiff me out on. I think Tom just said on trying to set him up with Jerry Hairston junior because they're all buddies. Do we have that? Can I just play me? Is there a way to get to me trying to? So by the way, I will say this. I have a distinct memory, and maybe I'm wrong of coal, right? Intimating some kind of success against Jerry hairs in junior. And I. Cold tonight later, but I did in the interest of the marketplace of ideas, if you will just they're all out there and see what rises right? Thank you. I don't remember whatever it led me to this moment. Here Hairston junior. It's an all Naperville show. Your from Naperville coal rights on the show later calls going to pretend that he once struck you out in a baseball game. We all know that true. Never right. Never. I'll call. He's my guy come on go, right? Stop. It didn't happen. It's really too bad coal dodge, the bullet really really effectively Jerry also dogs those about some baseball Jerry played in the big leagues for very long time. His father played in the big leagues, his grandfather if memory serves played in the negro leagues, this is a story baseball family, and I I really respect Jerry that as a person, and I think is baseball knowledge is it is as high as anyone's hours agree with them. But he's says what he thinks which is such a refreshing perspective. And and so I found it particularly interesting in asking about Manny Machado because Jerry played for the dodgers. He lives a big chunk of the year. And he's a dodgers analyst over on sports in LA, which is what broadcast dodgers games during the regular season. And so I found Jerry's perspective on what he made of Manny Machado is play at first base. Really interesting. I was on air after that game during the post game for the dodgers here. And it was probably one of the most. Most difficult things to express the feelings that I really had because I was I was saddened by his actions. I was angry. I was disappointed because he's too good of a player, and I was probably the one guy clamoring or Manny Machado when Cory Seager went down. Because I came up in the Baltimore Orioles organization. Just like Manny Machado did. And I've watched his career I saw friends over there. And I wanted him the opportunity to play LA and Hollywood play in the postseason and kinda showcase themselves to the world. And when you're on the grand stage of the NFL CS or hopefully the World Series. Everybody's watching matches fans not just scouts or teams. You're watching kids look up to you. And you know, that's one of those plays that I still can't believe he did it, you know, whether he was frustrated whether he's angry. I I don't know. I I can't I'm not a mind reader. But that that play can't happen in the game of baseball. He could have hurt Aguilar. He could hurt himself. He made no attempt to avoid him. He drug his left leg. And hit Aguilar. And I think you know, once you look back at the video and saw that he was embarrassed. I didn't realize it did that. So I've spoken to Manny Machado quite a few times. I really liked him. He's one of my favorite players in baseball. He's an unbelievable talent. But stuff like that. You know, a lot of teams don't like to see that. And it's unfortunate. And hopefully that'll be lack thing last time that happens and the Machado conversation continued and Jerry actually broke down. What almost feels like some breaking news because Jerry's really connected and he shared with us as he discussed even more and more and more detail the Machado situation, because it's the, you know, the money the money thing, and the and the I don't hustle Jerry got to a point you'll you'll hear it here where he actually gave some insight into how major league teams that might have signed Machado feel about this. The last twenty four to forty eight hours three people three different teams organizations. Said hey, you know, what we're going to kick the tires on Manny Machado. They're out the one thing you can do it. So he's a superstar player. I understand. You can't have all the time. Because if you buy games, sometimes you get a groundwater. The second base you're going to be angry upset plan your bat or pop up. And then you gotta then you run. Okay. I understand that part. But when you voice it, you know. This is your free agent year. I wish you wouldn't it wouldn't have said those comments because guess what a lot of teams have to take you by your word you save. You're not that Johnny hustled, taboo guy. A lot of teams have to take you by by by your words. So are you gonna invest three hundred million dollars? I don't know. I love the player. I think he's unbelievably talented. I like him as a person I talked to him quite a few times, I really liked him. But it's unfortunate last forty eight hours. It hasn't been his best best forty eight hours. Speaking baseball, Boston Red Sox with that one to zero lead right now with a three one series lead in the AFC against the Astros. The Astros trying to get the David price. Would it be fair to price and it's hard to be fair price because he can be so remarkably unlikable as if that's his actual career goal has pitched pretty well in this game. But it looks like a leadoff. No, I'm sorry. Eight a double with two outs for the Astros so runner on second here in the fourth as Houston tries to. Even the score of the game. Again, Boston went on one nothing. What what he dated? I have been pretty vocal about I like Clayton Kershaw the pitcher. I think he's a great pitcher in the numbers to me speak for themselves that he is not always pitch well in the postseason, but Jerry zone perspective. And I respect it. And I just want to give him the chance and this is an hour ago. This is the dodgers you Jerry, Hairston juniors view. A why perhaps people like me are being unfair and too critical of the postseason so-called failures Clayton Kershaw. In the past. I think they're they're just. The couple of times struggled. It's been blown out of proportion. You got beat by really good teams teams. I believe went on to win the World Series. So there only a couple struggles. If I if I say this yesterday Mark Clayton Kershaw eight not third not fourth postseason start with one zero runs allowed in three or fewer hits eight that is the most by any pitcher in postseason history about that first second now Roger Clements. Nymex sure as you're not Pedro Martinez. Just in Berlin. And Tom gladden. Greg back doesn't matter. Clayton Kershaw stands alone. About eight postseason start with one or zero run. That's incredible. So all these postseason narratives, you know. I I think it's blown out of proportion because you made a couple of bad starts. But guess what? Their other superstars that. I've had bad games. That's just the nature of the beast, the postseason. I think you'll squash the narrative if and when he wins a ring, but in order to win a ring you gotta be able to have that complete team. And I think the dodgers have that team this season. And they're going to have every opportunity the dodgers. And it's Donald easy win. They're a win away from their second consecutive World Series appearance and a showdown with probably the Red Sox. But obviously that series going at least for the moment or the Astros at the ashes can stage a pretty significant comeback. And I think the dodgers are great team in the dodgers were my pick in the preseason to win the whole thing. I I did the selective memory that definitely took them against the Astros in Stewart being an obnoxiously effective producer decided to go. And do the fact checking and it turned out to who. Did I think the dodgers over the Yankees in five games though? I said five you did say five. Yeah. I can get out of the three right? I don't think that I very much doubt at the dodgers when the World Series. It'll be when it again in five against either of the teams that they would face. Although you never know momentum is a kind of a crazy thing Broncos, by the way up twenty eight three and surprisingly, not just putting every time. So they can increase their odds of another. Josh Rosen pick six they're actually. Trying to do their own offensive game plan as well. And this would actually get the Broncos the three and four and they've been such a disappointment this year. I am I wrong, case keenum. I know he's not very good. But yeah that he's almost led this team on almost doesn't count. Almost led this team on four come from behind drives us here. The two times they want. He did it was a come from behind touchdown drive or at least scoring drive. He almost did it against the chiefs. But there was sort of a box play at the end that might have given the time might have despite the ball and try to kick a field goal. So, you know, case keenum team case keenum on the show. And it was a really really nice guy, which isn't a reason probably the root for people. But that's kind of what we do here on the show. Speaking of rooting for folks Markelle folds updated I'm going to do this for a while until it's it's hopeless. I said earlier in the show, I feel so bad for this guy. I feel so bad for this this young player and what is now season two of the yipes to begin his professional career. He is what he started Phillies trying to give him. Some confidence a show him. They believe in him. He's played fifteen minutes. So he's edgy now toward Sarge and Covington and Embiid and Simmons played in the twenty one and twenty two minute range. He's edging toward backup minutes. He's one six. One of six one or two from the free throw line. And he's just been a fairly invisible presence the Sixers despite our NBA overreactions from a couple of hours ago. I think one of our ten overreactions was the Sixers are doomed have turned it around there. Now up twenty on the ball. So we're doing overreactions things tomorrow. The Sixers are NBA champion favorite people overreact. And the thing that's weird about people overreacting I get the overreaction of the NFL. It's a sixteen game season. Every game is really significant. It's easy to see things that you think are legitimate problems. That are really just a one off. She's eighty two games. I mean, it's half as long as MLB MLB is the longest season on the face of the earth. That's ridiculous along measuring baseball's regular season is and yet people freak out people lose their minds. People forget that LeBron's first year that he returned to Cleveland. They were battling flirting with being under five hundred in January. Of that return in January. And that story ended the way it always ends up the Brown. They went to the NBA finals. I think the Lakers are gonna be pretty good off the bat, and I think LeBron's going to have a much higher usage rate. I think he's going to score a lot more points than it has in the past. By the way, he's pretty effortlessly scored twenty seven points twenty six points a game. The last few years last year as twenty seven nine and ninety shot in the fifty three or fifty four percent range from the field is field goal percentage. And it's not like he's the center, right? He's shooting threes. He's taking long to pointers. He's taking jump shots in a regular basis. He's so good news. So officiant, I think you can see LeBron this year easily be thirty seven and seven guy this season. I think they're going to be pretty good from from jump street. But if they start poorly, they don't start well, if they're nine and eight or whatever it is. That's what they were in Miami. That first year they started really really, quote unquote, badly don't freak out. It's not the end of the world. Lebron's james. The Lakers failed experiment. It takes a while for people. Now, LeBron I think other people to understand the way and the weight and the stress and what it means to be LeBron James teammate, there's a great movie, but the movie about the gettys where they had to replace. The actor from toy blanket from house of cards expunges. Dan McCauley was expunged him Kevin Spacey. And they had to redo all the great line in that film where the grandson of the Getty patriarch says being Getty you had so much money. It was like being a black hole. The light would bend. Your will. People would bend. Your will. Lebron does that to everything around him? The physics of being a basketball player of being a media member of being a fan of being a part of the entourage of bean and owner of being a Luke Walton head coach the physics change, the laws of nature are different. It's really disorienting. It's hard to get used to has to be true. For Brandon Ingram is to be true for Lonzo ball has to be true. For Luke Walton is going to be true for Jeanie Buss. I think she's a fantastic owners feature from Johnson. It's different. When the games count. It's a process. I don't think we should lose their minds. The guys, you know, me and. And Stewart and Ryan hick, you're going up for beers out of Ryan's gonna show up. Gideon update tomorrow. The trace lives up to his obligations.
