"For magazine founder Larry Flynt died at the age of 78. Force behind Hustler which launched in 1974 you male who were at one time adolescents, you might remember that jump from Playboy to penthouse. Was one jump. And then that jump from penthouse the hustler was like jumping the Grand Canyon. Seriously, that was a man. Now, along with his fame and fortune. He also dealt with his fair share of legal and health issues. Hey, was shot in 1978 by serial killer Joseph Paul Franklin, and that left Flint paralyzed from the waist down. And as for his legal infamy, he once found himself at odds with televangelist Jerry Falwell over a parody cartoon. Falwell sued Flint fought back. The case went all of the way to the Supreme Court and ultimately flat one in 80 decision that was in 1988. "Going to put the throwback live on hold until Holly gets back on Thursday, But in the meantime, in between time we do wanna follow up on the fall fall well up on the Jerry Falwell Jr story that we've been following. So what's the latest in following the jury? Follow? Well story we've been following welling the story today is a pretty straightforward one Liberty University of which he was the president. He is now the ex president. Um The university itself has launched a full ass investigation, in fact, said in their memo. We're launching a less investigation. They any of that because it's Liberty University, and they don't use words like ass. They do, however, allow their president tohave sex in the corner with a boy and his wife. That's a different story. But I'm not here. Just church lady isn't that special Special? Well, I think Satan is in Jerry Falwell's pants, which is what has led Falwell University. No. Okay. I'm going to stop before I get really trouble. Liberty University on Monday announced that it would open an independent investigation into quote all facets of the tenure of Jerry Falwell Jr. Who left resigned last week amid the sex scandal. We covered in depth in detail here on the colony, Bradley show because I know I was enthralled by it, and I know many of you have been fascinated by it as well. But in addition to all the like Hickey, sexy stuff, which I think is totally valid to discuss because of his rank hypocrisy. That Jerry Falwell in Liberty University, on the one hand require of their students to behave a certain way but have allowed other people to behave another. I think that's valid, the more important story to me and now the story that I think we will continue to Teo. Pay attention to is the one regarding some of the shady deals because the sex in many cases in the shady deals are kind of hand in hand. In fact, there are two people. Ah, ah! Who have come forward with accounts of shady real estate deals on DH shenanigans involving Jerry Falwell Jr that, um I think this investigation will help hopefully uncover. And maybe at some point hold Jerry Falwell Jr accountable for because we're talking millions of dollars like a match. I just like to remind you Your wife. Okay, So you're Jerry Falwell Jr. I don't want to be, but okay, Okay. Let's make grant Junior in our role play. You're Jerry Falwell, Jr. Colleen. You're his wife. Okay? And Becky you with and I now, Becky, you go. You're you guys air at a hotel? You're having a great weekend. You see a hot pool boy, you go up to him. And say, Hey, these young girls don't know a thing. It's time for youto get with a real woman. And I'll be and my husband would like toe watch. Yes. So then five minutes after that happens. Grant a K Jerry Falwell comes to the pool boy, because, Yeah, you missed the part where we already assigned you a role in this in this theater of the mind, not taking the fall much like the Falwell's. I'm gonna be in the corner paint off your corner in the pants off and then five minutes after that deed is done. You're gonna approach the pool, boy and be like, Have I got a deal for you? Okay, I know you can't pay. For to buy some real estate. But I'm gonna give you some money to help you buy a property so that you can learn how to buy and sell real estate can get my wallet out here. Get that money out of luck finding it, Um And then you're going to fork over like a bunch of money to this kid that your wife just had relations with that you've known for about five minutes and go into business together like it's just so crazy Well, and here's the other thing. So this is Is it And it's not any wonder I should say And and no doubt this in this full ass investigation will uncover a lot of these shenanigans because it's no wonder to me that a person who Is comfortable enough to be going against the Moral standards that he espouses is also going to be dishonest in multiple different areas of his life, right. And so it's not just the kinky sex stuff, which is you know again is fine, whatever you get up to, but if you are telling a story about yourself That's completely different and actually admonishing other people for far lesser kink. On the kink in question is if if male and female students are amping? Yeah, so much less dancing. They could be penalized yet. This guy can, you know go off and do whatever and watch his wife have sex with the pool boy. But But if if you're comfortable enough, you know Going against your quote morals to do that You're comfortable enough to commit some other immoral acts Exactly Some that are when you're awash in millions of dollars and oh, by the way, one of the other real estate deals. It was kind of shady involved. Liberty University's money directly, so it wasn't just him. That's horrible. His own money. It was getting the university too. To spend their money to help out a really hot trainer who, by the way, It's like there's nothing to see here, like, okay. What a con artist right Well, it's just well it it's and he's hiding behind the veneer of this institution that Again tries to stand on some particular moral principles AA and he in doing so it's like he's hiding in plain sight. While he commits crimes, Luke, this.

"I'm Jim Taylor skinner, and this is the electorate on this episode, have a conversation with the hogue, the president of Nero Pro, choice America, and he joins me to discuss her new book. The lie that binds it's really an incredible book and it chronicles how abortion rights of all from being a non-partisan backburner issue to a central 'cause champion by conservatives in the radical, right. This is really one of those books that I have to read twice. It's that informative. So without further ADO, here's my conversation with Elise. Hogue. leasehold welcome to the cast. Thank you so much. You're. So before we jump into your book, I want us to talk about something because I recently learned that you were from Texas and that really my inches because I'm also from the South I'm from Memphis Tennessee, and I was reading one of your interviews where you'd said that you wanted to leave Texas because Uber afraid that you'd be bored and that was something like totally relate to. Manila it was sort of. Knew that there was a being rolled out there and I wanted to. It be challenged in You don't both my own horizons, but also different people different people think and act and. I am so privileged grateful to have been able to do that. You know I have to admit, and you may relate to this as being from a have A. Of defensiveness when it comes to people bashing Texas, they're such amazing people. They're they're such amazing within their and during such good work, and you can't judge inspired leaders. You have to judge us by Jordan Molly ivins in grammar yards and Janice Joplin for goodness. Sake. Now. There's just and that's true everywhere where there's adversity, there are amazing women trying to make a better future to Tennessee. It's true taxes in needs recognized. That is absolutely true. I FEEL DEFENSIVE ABOUT MEMPHIS TO MEMPHIS. Amazing. You know have Bill Street. Yeah. There's some things that I wanted to get to and that's where I connected with you because I was like, yes, I understand that needs to escape. But yet you know having these strong ties to my hometown It's. US You know and I always say at in calm from a reproductive rights background at came to it, and part of that is my experience in Texas in watching Texans in particularly poor people in taxes in rural people in Texas I'm being the canaries in coalmines of these rearrested policies that use reproductive oppression disenfranchise. So I really love this book because I've read some bit of this history in different books over time, and you just put it together into end. So well, right and I. I think one of the things about the Republican. Party. That happens I think we have these debates in the media when people talk about it as we just accept the Republican. Party. As is right without kind of thinking about how they got here or the illogic of their kind of overarching philosophy because a lot of it doesn't really make sense. Right. But you know when you read your book, the Republican Party today is not the way that it used to be like it's not recognisable from. Prior, to nineteen seventy right you at one Haley. How they kind of cobbled together this coalition of these disaffected smaller groups. You know these Democrats, who weren't happy with the passage of the Civil Rights Act and know some religious groups. So what were some of these initial groups in that coalition? Awkward it was a little bit. The opposite, right that every every political party has factions. There's no question about it, but you know as as the sort of book opens, you do see Jerry Falwell senior, who, subsequently passed and Paul and at small set a really fundamental as they call themselves dominion. It S, which means they believe God gave digging into white men over systems, elliptical, economic social systems, and. Our. Country, whereas before they had to do very much Mansi in short all the sudden is rich move mad. The Women's Liberation Movement is really challenging total control over power systems in the country and they mobilized to political action fighting school desegregation and. It's a long long story. You see throughout the book is that. An establishment GOP, which you still have any conservatives who still had social liberals in fiscal conservatives, they were not finding enough to hang together in related. People who hadn't been voting band goals were building over ten. Maybe we should add up and there was crew rate and they got more and more halt on a constituency within their electoral coalition that increasingly represented a small small action in the country in their views and they. Title, they were making deals with the devil and they. You know what? If anything can prince is that the artifice around abortion which seemed great to that at the time and I'm sure we'll discuss. Because one place where were toweling. Stream minority and they knew they didn't have public pain on their side. So it was a constant balancing act and what ended up happening is these radicals increasingly over to the party with each subsequent election, and trump is the ultimate manifestation of that.

"This interesting debate played out over the course of your writing. About current virus and Liberty University students spoke to seem to kind of disagree about the motivations of Jerry. Falwell junior like one student said look at this guy like he went to University of Virginia Law. School he's smart. He knows what he's doing you know when he was denying the corona virus. This is sort of a political move and then another student was like you know. I just wonder if he's just sort of a chain email guy like my dad. I wondered where you came down having spoken to Jerry Falwell and having done all this reporting whether you felt like you understood what was going on any better if I could understand the mine of Jerry Falwell Junior I. I don't know what it'd be a wise woman I I don't know I I mean the problem is that I strongly agree that he's not dumb. He's very savvy. He's educated. He's a college president. He's like moving in education circles in DC. Like he's just not. I don't think I really really don't think he's dumb. So that leaves you with the idea that he must have been able to understand. The public health warnings early and that he still was running his institution. This way and being so dismissive rhetorically public you know. Is that just to score political points? Even though he could clearly see the path of this virus I mean that that would be so abominable that and then you run up again. That and then it's like is he that abomination and that's just like I don't know his mind. So that's a matter of almost moral judgment like where you fall on that because it would be so abhorrent to be able to clearly see the viruses danger and still not just reopened campus in this limited way but also really minimize. When you know that you're a public waste that people listen to and take seriously so I guess the answer is i. I don't know but I don't think either of those answers are flattering.

"So Jerry Falwell. Junior is the president of Liberty University. I know you've interviewed him. Can you just explain a little bit about who he is and his role at the college? Sure follow while of course is the son. He's Jerry Foul Junior to Jerry Falwell. Who is a major figure on the Christian rate in the seventies eighties into the nineties He inherited the college basically from. I mean that's not the language they use but his father founded it and then he was named the head of the college as soon as his father died. Two thousand seven. Is He a pastor too? He is not a pastor. He's very much not a pastor. I think he sees that as giving him license in terms of his language and behavior and just kind of his affect and attitude but he is he's very non pastoral in a way that is unusual for a distinctly evangelical college campus. Like this. What do you mean when you say that he? He doesn't pray in Public. Which is again just very unusual contrast it to the Evangelical College I went to where the president of the college is very much someone who's comfortable speaking about their own spiritual life very comfortable with the Bible like very fluent in Evangelical Language and theology and follow is very much not like that. He's his the students. I was talking to especially last year. Really viewed him as more like a mass got like they kind of put you know Gerry when they see like. There's this like they feel a lot of fondness a lot of them. These kind of a popular figure that he's he's more like a kind of celebrity more like a mascot But he kind of revels in that and I think he likes being seen as someone who kind of has no time for the the normal rules. I guess in sort of a Trumpian way Jerry. Falwell JR junior's response to the krona virus tracks without of the president. In early March. He downplayed the virus said. He wanted to reopen school to whoever would like to come after spring break. And that's when his faculty began speaking out a liberty professor an English professor and Mary Beth Baggett wrote an OP. Ed for Religion News Service and said like basically kind of begging the board of Trustees to overrule Falwell and shutdown campus. And just making this very forceful argument for why. This was an irresponsible thing to do. My conversations with employees. There suggests that that may be influenced quite a few students to then stay home. You know maybe people who had been thinking about coming back read that trusted her and thought. I'm not I'm not coming back into this environment. And then after pressure from the state of Virginia into a few days into spring break he did say classes would move online but still rhetorically was really sending mixed messages in terms of how serious he thought this was so we should say that. It's not like everyone has flooded back to campus at Liberty University right. How many students do you think are on campus right now? The school says as of this last Monday that there were about a thousand students. They have a very precise number. They say one thousand forty five students on campus and then of course there's others who live off campus and they're not going to class right there like taking all their classes online. They're just living their exactly. They're just living. Their Falwell has compared it to lake. Basically they're running an apartment complex or a series of apartment complexes rather than a normal college campus. I guess to be fair to Jerry Falwell Junior. He's sort of stated his intention is almost almost pastoral. Saying like we are in a way protecting vulnerable students by having them on campus together. He's he's spoken about a duty not to close the campuses doors to people who meaning need shelter. Need a place to be. Do you think that's fair or B. S? I think if that were the only if that had been consistent message I think that that's very reasonable and that's something many other colleges are doing sort of keeping a barebones operation running for students who have nowhere else to go. The problem is is that that new tone has come after weeks of minimizing and dismissing and joking and kind of swaggering about inviting. Anyone back. Who wants to come back and so that just adds up to this environment of really mixed messages for for students and anyone else watching this in the last couple of days. It's been reported that at least one student at liberty tested positive for the corona virus. Do you think that is? What might have changed. Jerry Falwell's tone here. Has He spoken out since that happened? Yes they've spoken out to. Fiercely Deny The New York Times reporting on this and publicly demand a correction and issue a slew of press releases kind of offering their own breakdown of the numbers of students with symptoms. And who knows what's happening privately And whether or not this will motivate them to Or has has helped motivate them to serve. Start taking it more seriously but publicly. They've used it as an opportunity to push back on kind of like. This is the New York Times out to get us but there is one diagnosis. It seems that everyone agrees on that. It's IT'S A student. Who's not on campus And then there's a number of other students again somewhat disputed that who have shown symptoms and are in isolation part of why. It's so hard to understand what's happening at liberty is that it's an insular world not just private more than that. A lot of the people ruth relied on for her reporting. They worry that speaking on the record could cost. I've interviewed a lot of employees at liberty and very very few are willing to speak on the record and use their names a staff member. I talked to said silence is job security and just put it that plainly like that. You cannot know that you will be safe there if you speak up or dissent in any way and that includes you know things like I would prefer to work from home. Not because I have a you know a personal like that. I'm immuno-compromised or anything like that. But just I would like to take public health recommendation seriously inside self isolate at this point so the bar for what counts as descent is very low there and there's just a lot of nervousness. Yeah I was struck by the fact that the woman who wrote that op Ed. The you said was influential Mary. Beth bag at the English professor. She was clear that the only reason she felt like she could write it was that she was leaving campus next year. Yes she has another job she and her husband actually both teach at liberty And they've both been pretty outspoken and they both already previously had announced that they have jobs lined up at another school so I think that gives her the the freedom to be outspoken professors at liberty. Don't have tenure there une year to year contracts. Which of course makes them much much shwarier to speak freely about what they think about the school or or anything really just makes them vulnerable. Generally it really really does so they all and there are also you know there's plenty of cases of. I think it was last year. They serve slashed the divinity the School of Divinity Faculty hugely and so it's not unprecedented for for them to lose their jobs very suddenly. And certainly you can lose your job for speaking up or people are very very afraid of that. So I saw this op-ed the Washington Post. The basically said what was happening. Liberty University when it came to corona virus. It reflected this larger issue with evangelical education which is like a strain of authoritarianism. It said how Catholic Colleges. There's this structure that you turn to when there's a dispute over what to do but with these evangelical institutions many of them over the last few decades started to revolve around singular figures like the president. Like in this case. That would be Jerry Falwell Junior. I wonder what you think about that. That's really interesting. Yeah in some ways a school. Like liberty is like a nondenominational mega church. That doesn't answer to anyone else. And you have the elder board kind of stocked by people that the founding pastor has handpicked and so will they will never descend and then of course it's a self selecting group or on campus And that self selecting group of students by this point they've all come in during the trump administration so they knew what they were getting into. And then there's also just kind of a more general thing about evangelical culture that's just slow to say to protest or dissent Last year I talked to a lot of students who were critical of the administration and it felt like there was sort of rising level of dissatisfaction with falls leadership than But even so the protests that they would put on you know on a campus of fifteen thousand would be maybe a couple dozen students. That's just not the the lever that they reached to to try to enact change. It's much more about personal conversations. There's there's also a lot of talk at liberty a lot of reinforcement from the top about if you have an issue with when you go to them directly at and that's biblical but it also can be used as a way of squashing dissent..

I mean stealing by stealing something from somebody that you don't even respect you're just giving credence is to the fact that they are valuable have ideas and in that all married and all you do just steal it an appropriate to your own And and then you still maintain your superiority. It's just Kinda hilarious. Yeah Yeah on self-aware that is moral hermit crabbing except for I like Hermit Democrats and I do not like the Falwell's Jerry Falwell. Junior is considerably more positive in his words to the president than he has been an e mails writing about his own students fairly earned in September two thousand nineteen Reuters published an article based on leaked emails from fall to his faculty. The title exclusive follow blasted Liberty Student as retarded police chief as half with an e mails. Wow Yeah Reuters. Interviewed or reviewed several dozen emails painted pattern of intense disrespect for the people who attend liberty and work. Their here are some examples. Ronaldson's the dean of the engineering school was a bag of hot air. Who couldn't spell the word profit fall wrote in two thousand and eleven richards? He thinks that's like burn. I think he does. Yeah not though. It's definitely not Richard Hinckley. The campus police. Chief was a half wit and easy to manipulate and shouldn't be allowed to speak publicly. Hinckley couldn't be reached for comment. Count probably of how much of a fucking half with to talk to the press of Kevin keys then liberties associate athletic director. Your father wrote in two thousand twelve only Kevin involved in something if you want it to not work out. She let that position at your school. If that's what you're saying up until very recently only an idiot would hire Kevin fucking more I m his the employer and I regularly show him pictures of my wife naked. Ask them your ass. You deserve to be here up until very recently. Follow Junior has been allowed to get away with this behavior due to the sheer terror. Everyone else at liberty seems to hold for him. One current university employee told politico. Hello everybody is scared for their life. Everybody walks around in fear This Michael pleased to learn the cool place to learn. This employee only agreed to speak to politico after buying a burner phone because they were afraid that Falwell junior is monitoring their communications. Fuck yeah yeah dictatorship over there says that's pretty great. I love that. He's an advocate for free speech at schools. Now the good news is that all this bad behavior has finally percolated out into the wider world. An activist Christian group. Faithful America has launched a petition to force the Virginia Attorney. General in the IRS. To Open criminal investigations into Jerry Falwell Junior. They've received over fifteen eighteen thousand signatures so far earlier this month. The Washington examiner a very right wing news website published an editorial simply titled Jerry Falwell. Junior needs to go and on September thirteenth. After several of these damning articles dropped two hundred liberty students protested on campus at least sixty of them demanded an investigation into the schools president and his administration. So that's good. Maybe something will happen. They've but so much time has passed. Yeah he made billions of dollars dollars stealing taxpayer funds and giving people worthless degrees In exchange for money that should have gone to infrastructure the structure. It's like doubly terrible because he both waste all those tax dollars and then all of these kids wind up in horrible debt For no benefit. We're back. Are you waving that. I am waving threateningly waving on English muffin attached to a sling though. I'm excited so if he's excited route to excited and proud on with the episode. Of course you don't sign up new students at that kind of rate without fudging or obscuring a few facts as we get in that a little bit. Sophia to recruiter told The Times that they were ordered to quote the university's cost on a per credit basis. Instead of per course. Instructors are also urged to not push students on how good their grades were in highschool any GPA over point five enough to qualify for Liberty University point five two point five is like if you guess on literally everything including the essay. You'll you'll get a point five chess. The good news for those students is that liberties online courses. are not exactly famous for their rigor from the New York Times. People know it's kind of a joke and don't learn that much from Dustin Wall. Senior from South Dakota told me use Google when you take your quizzing. You don't have to work as hard. It's pretty obvious. Liberty says using Google during quizzes or exams. It's cheating wow yeah. The Times reporting suggests that recruiters is even started obscuring the schools Christian orientation in order to suck and more sweet tax dollars. I mean students quote to recruiters also said they were told not to mention liberties Christian orientated until people agree to apply when this fact is made clear in the user agreement they sign online it also becomes clear at the moment that the recruiter sign up students for their first classes typically an orientation class in three required Bible Studies. Classes students often can't transfer credits for these courses to other colleges which deters many from dropping out. So if you're keeping track the the school which is funded primarily by tax payer dollars trick students into signing up. Without knowing that they're joining a Christian university may try to leave a devalue. It doesn't transfer anywheres. They can't really go. And then there's mandatory Bible classes that are paid for again with taxpayer dollars this is cool FAC now now. This all obviously has not made Mr Trump University. There was a university. You knew what you were getting. With trump university a picture with a cardboard cutout of Donald Trump and nothing else. I miss them. I miss them too now. Liberty University's teachers are not all happy with the state affairs. That has changed because it used to be a somewhat. Actually say there's teachers really doesn't seem like it that seems to be the administration's rations attitude twos. There's teachers we thought the scam just ran itself after we suckered you into getting in. That is yeah. We'll be getting a quote from I'm Jerry Falwell junior that's basically that See most teachers like to know that they work for a well respected university rather than a prophet mill with very little to no educational benefit fit but Liberty University is ranked in the lowest one quarter of national universities by US News and World Report. It lags behind Brigham Young University a religious college that delivers as an education low-quality online courses might be one reason for this. Another is probably the university's outright hatred of its teachers. Only the law school at Liberty University even offers the tenure track. This allows Jerry Falwell junior to enact an extreme degree of control over his faculty because he can fire absolutely anyone however this also makes it difficult. Go to draw. Incompetent teachers. Chris Gamer a former English. Professor provides additional explanation for this treatment. When I was there at faculty meetings the commentary was that online was funding the school school while they were trying to break even on the residential side? It was understood that on the online side they were making a killing boy. Cool sounds like a real school to me in an interview with the New York Times followed junior admitted that the faculty complained initially about the growing importance of online classes. He told them the big victory was finding way to tame the faculty. We really started making money when we fuck in Tames fast see. Yeah what are they fucking tigers. What is going on? Yeah Yeah You tame the faculty. Otherwise they're going to complain about the fact that you aren't delivering an Education to your students boy those Pesky Faculty Jerry Falwell Juniors decision to endorse endorse. Donald Trump in the two thousand sixteen election was deeply controversial. Both for the students and the teachers. According to will's right up the school's methods became even more aggressive after Falwell endorsed. I Donald Trump early that year according to multiple current and former faculty members the closer you get to. The president's office says a former history professor. Brian Melton discussing a chilling effect at the school. The worse it becomes comes. Falwell staff now operates masterfully to squash challenges to his views and his rise in national political influence. So that's good. That's scary as hell. Yeah this March Falwell junior junior attended the signing of an executive order by President Trump on college free speech. Oh my college free speech. The irony is truly too much. Yeah the guy who brought the school's paper under direct personal control. is invited by president trump to Watch the signing of bill that I'm sure will protect. Free speech hurts. Let's Yeah in a PBS Newshour appearance after he claimed that his college was inclusive of all ideas unlike all those evil liberal universities as evidence for this he pointed it out that Liberty University invited President Carter to deliver it's two thousand eighteen. Commencement address and head Bernie Sanders speak in two thousand fifteen at a mandatory assembly. These things did happen. Falwell neglected to mention some other things like the fact that in two thousand nine withdrew funding and recognition for the College Democrats Club Marquan the VP of Student Affairs said this was because the Democratic Party defends abortion and supports the LGBT agenda. Wow so that's good. After the bloody two dozen sailors reminiscent of his dad. Yeah he the apple did not fall far from the tree that is also poop and not apples and apples are also boop yes also poop after the deadly two thousand seventeen unite. The right rally in Charlottesville. You know this is going to be good for like that. The Liberties Student Government Association tinted to issue a statement of Solidarity with Heather Higher. The murdered anti-fascist activists in response to this the G. as president refused to release the statement because it would have meant sending sending it to Jerry Falwell Junior. I really didn't think he was going to be on board with sympathizing with a woman murdered by a Nazi God. Well the probably not wrong about that. That's why I said okay when Falwell senior died the idea was that Jonathan Falwell would act as the moral compass fruit Liberty University University while his brother handled the finances. Jonathan is still the school's vice chancellor for spiritual affairs but the evidence suggests that he has been largely sidelined at the university. One Liberty official told Brandon Linden. Ambrose Sinoe writing for politico quote. Jury never remove Jonathan. He just kind of pushed him aside. He bought all of the Thomas Road Baptist Church Properties Liberty Christian Academy Jonathan's building at the airport in a couple of others. Jonathan complained but never stood up to Jerry because he knew Jerry controlled the purse strings healthy family. Jonathan seems sad as hell I I think Jonathan is kind of sad as hell. Yeah I'd like to know what he does everyday cry.

"Fear good title. The author will young was formerly the editor in Chief of Liberty University. School newspaper The champion. He claims he instantly got in trouble during his first week there. His crime was noticing the his schools police department didn't publish a daily crime log online. He called the Virginia Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators to ask. If this was against the law. The University Police Department found out and complain to his boss. Who Yelled at him he writes? This wasn't exactly a rude awakening. I had spent the previous three years. Watching the university administration led by President. Jerry Falwell junior meddle in our coverage bridge revised controversial op EDS and protect its image by stripping. Damning facts from our stories still stuck around. I thought that if I wrote with discretion and kept my head down I could one day win enough trust from the university adversity to protect the integrity of our journalism. I even dreamed we could eventually persuade the administration to let the champion go independent from its supervision. I was naive instead when my team took over that fall in two thousand seventeen encountered an oversight system that required us to send every story follows assistant for review. Any administrative or professor who appeared in an article had editing authority. Forty over any part of that article. They added deleted whatever. They wanted falwell color newsroom on multiple occasions to direct our coverage. Personally he had a year earlier when weeks before the two thousand sixteen election action. He read a draft of my column defending mainstream news outlets in ordered me to say whom I plan to vote for. I refused on ethical grounds. So Falwell told me to insert. The author refused to reveal review which candidate he is supporting for president at the bottom of my column. That says stupid school right. Yeah you love the intellectual honesty and the freedom of speech. I mean it really has fucking Nazi propaganda qualities. Yeah I mean it it. It is consistent with the Family Line of hating freedom of speech and in not being able to stand anybody saying anything about you. I guess that is passed down in the genes in pranks apparently aren't so. We've learned a lot about genetics. Today will eventually quit the school paper and the School of Communication and not replace him with a new editor in chief instead. They changed the champion to faculty run paper taking control for content direction entirely highly away from the students future journalists Liberty University we're forced to sign an NDA forbidding them from talking about editorial or managerial direction oversight decisions or information design. I'm just privileged or confidential. The day also makes student journalists acknowledged that they are privileged to get thoughts opinions and other statements from university administration. We're so lucky talk to us. Yeah that's cool so obviously will is a student with an ax to grind but his experiences gel very clearly with the reporting of numerous Chris other journalists as well as complaints of students alumni he and others paint a picture of Liberty University is a sort of evangelical dictatorship of higher learning which teaches super neat Dictatorship of higher learning. Yeah yeah sounds dreamy. Yeah where the entire university versity is just an extension of Jerry Falwell Juniors personality and pocket book That sounds like a good thing for a school to be. Sounds like a good education. I'm glad they don't have to pay taxes that would be crazy If they had to pay taxes because they're in a political religious coercion. Listen that demands. They writers published who they only flattery. Yang's Y- now a lot of the Changes in the coacher of liberty. University versity are believed to have something to do with what has made the school so enormously. Profitable since Jerry. Junior took over the massive growth of their online education program. By two thousand fifteen liberty. University was the second largest provider of online education in the United States. Second only to the University of Phoenix. I was GONNA Guess Phoenix Meeting. Yeah Yeah that's number one number twos liberty you. School can largely thank the federal government for the money that it's gotten on as a result of this two thousand seventeen liberty students received more than seven hundred hundred and seventy two million dollars per year from the Department of Education at ranked sixth in federal aid. Nationwide the vast majority of Liberty University's wealth comes from taxpayer dollars. Yeah and they don't have to pay taxes on. That's good you guys feel better by your for your taxes are going. I feel great about it. They need a billion alien dollars a year. It's not upsetting at all Flint Michigan. Doesn't he clean water. Water but Liberty University needs seven hundred and seventy million dollars to discriminate against students self. Yeah a variety of types of it's cool super cool and consistent some people find it uncomfortable or down bad that a school which pans at students from supporting homosexuality swearing and even drinking off campus receives federal money. But we all know. Evangelical Christians in America don't have to obey obey the same rules as the rest of us. And that's fine it's fine everybody's happy with us. That's what Jesus was four. That's what Jesus was four. Massive of inequality may he was a big fan of inequality I mean I would say that. was his platform trickle down economics. He was a big Fan of right. Yeah Yeah Oh yeah. Yeah I remember when Jesus like oh I'll turn one fish while you know what I'm going to take the someone's GonNa take this fish. It's going to eventually trickle down onto the really hungry. I'm GONNA throw some bones at y'all someone of US going to get an eye fish. I and you will be fucking happy with and you will be my second in command. Jesus so online courses have become the primary money generating engine behind Liberty University. They have more than three hundred phone recruiters working from eight. Am to eight PM. I am calling students from lists. They get from sites like best colleges online in an article. Breaking this down. The New York Times noted there is such a race to get to customers before the University of Phoenix and other rivals rivals the perspective students sometimes mark. How little time has elapsed? Just a handful of minutes between. They're providing their information on the website and the call coming from Liberty Liberties tax filings. Show that in two thousand sixteen. The University Google Sixteen Point eight million for admissions leads generation in other words advertising liberty to those searching online for degree options the recruiters recruiter work under intense pressure. According to several former L. You owe employees. I spoke with. They get no more than forty five seconds between calls and sometimes managers override. Even that short break there are no formal quotas. A A federal regulation that went into effect in two thousand eleven forbids them but as one former employees put it. The highly motivated goal is for each recruiter to sign up eight new students. Day multiplayer clarice. Three hundred cubicles that is twenty four hundred per day Forty five seconds between calls. I mean honestly that's downright leisurely complaining about exactly ABS CBS so it sounds like it's just like a big. MLM KINDA situation. Yeah it's a kitten to that certainly. I mean it's yeah it's not an Malambot Tom. What do they call it when it's just like a farm? Yeah it's a diploma mill. Yeah Yeah it's a diploma mill masquerading as religious institution so it doesn't have to pay taxes on the billions of dollars. It gets from tax payers but the particularly aggressive sales. Call thing. That's like its own thing right. Yeah yeah telemarketing yeah. That's like crazy that it's so high pressure gas. Well there's fucking Glengarry Glenn Ross these people yeah yeah to get them into debt so that like to get them into taxpayers subsidized debt to the school for a a degree which spoilers is not worth a whole lot But you know it is worth a whole lot. Sophea our goods and services yes.

"Feminism continued its slow march forward the only social arena in which Reagan's Corpus Chunk of the Republican Party remained in line with the religious right was the oppression of gay people. So at least there's that for Jerry to find some common ground common ground. The common ground is stomping on the head of Yeah Yeah Conservatives Conservatives in San Francisco attempted to criminalize homosexuality during Reagan's term in the moral majority launched a boycott of sponsors for TV shows that included anything. They considered an abomination in the eyes eyes of God as the AIDS crisis kicked off and the death toll started derives from the hundreds to the thousands tens of thousands. Jerry Falwell was there to blame the catastrophe on Gay People Melinda quote next next from National Institutes of health publication the social impact of AIDS on the United States. The Reverend Jerry Falwell an independent Baptist minister in a sermon titled How many Roads To Heaven even delivered on his Nationally Televised Old Time Gospel hour stated that God was bringing an end to the sexual revolution through the AIDS epidemic. He also said they gay men are scared to walk near one of their our own kind right now and what we preachers have been able to do with our preaching a God who hates sin has stopped dead in its tracks by saying. Do it and die do it. Di- follows political organization. Moral majority opposed governmentally. Funded Research to find a cure for AIDS because the disease was a gay problem. He promoted the idea that AIDS was not only God's judgment on gaming but it also divine judgment extended to all of society. AIDS is a lethal judgement of God on America for endorsing this vulgar perverted and reprobate lifestyle. Strong condemnations of gay sexuality the is the cause of AIDS in God's vengeance also appeared in some religious journals when of them affirmed God warned mankind about aids and numbers thirty to twenty three. When he said be? Sure your sin. We'll find do you out. Maybe the AIDS plague will educate the world that the Bible is still the bedrock of civilization. And it should be learned loved and lived in our daily lives. Wow how I really feel like Getting people to get into Christianity by saying that God could occasionally punish you with AIDS. It's really not the strongest pitch. I've heard for Christianity. I really feel like that's not our if you throw that Bagel you're out of the show. I'm just praying you're fired tired. Sophie's faces prepping it. I have to deal with my rage reading the paragraph. Somehow and the way I'm doing it by putting my sling back together and getting loaded all right eight loaded up but you don't throw a not yet hit the dog. She's not in here. Oh Okay yes so. This is is the best time to throw a Bagel really. See I plan this. I didn't the exact impact of Falwell in the moral majority on the death. Toll of the AIDS crisis is impossible to calculate as with the nineteen seventies recession. This was a disaster with many factors behind it we dealt with some of that in our two-parter on the Reagans and the AIDS Sepah Democ the total death toll to AIDS would measure close to half a million by the year two thousand much of the government and action on AIDS during the crucial early years of the outbreak can be blamed on the religious rights. It's a vicious rejection of any money being spent to help people sick with what was then called the gay plague. It's nuts to me to be like oh We're GONNA meddle in your business until you that you can be gay but also Now that you need help for what we've called a gay disease we're going to just completely step away away how do you how do you have it. Both ways where you're like meddling and telling people what to do but then you're also like no but then not this part. It's the same way it always works with these people we're the only actual moral consistency is hate. Yeah it's true. There's not actual philosophy that can stand up to anything if you think about the core of it being hate vinit it always consistent. Yeah because they're justification will change and like they'll say like yeah we shouldn't spend any money Like we can't you know. Spend any money to like help out gay people but also like We can't consider homosexuality in any way as like a government and like all these different contradictory things but the core of it is just they want people to die. Yeah so if you think about it like that then yeah they're like completely consistent very consistent kind of what everyone who's not white and wealthy he to die But they hide the wealthy part from the people that they need to vote. I mean that's trump right now. It's kind of weird. The core of that is a political movement came from because like before this like they were conservatives but they would like like like Nixon. The shitty stuffy did was kind of like there was. There's a Lotta shitty stuffy. Did you could also have a guy like Nixon who would do like rational things like well but of course we need to protect the environment and like okay. I'll open trade with China even though like there are our big nemesis like. Let's see yeah point. Also bombed Cambodia in donate but like he's not gonna like he's he's just different different kind of Shitty. Yep Yeah we've really evolved. We really have evolved. Thanks to Jerry. Falwell breath now. There was an appeal during this time on the Christian Broadcasting Network Where they asked their followers to write the Justice Department in opposition to any relaxation of the rule against immigration? Camila infected persons That don't generated forty thousand letters and I can't think of anything more Christ like the not wanting sick immigrants to be helped. Yeah yeah as Jesus said Fuck Fuck you got mine. F famous quote. Yeah so Abortion remained a key issue for the moral majority throughout the nineteen eighties. They did not see much support from the Reagan administration. On this falls. Tactic was to seek a constitutional amendment to overturn Roe. V Wade since the Supreme Court had already declared that this undue restriction of abortion was a violation of constitutional rights his first step towards achieving. This was the human life bill which would have written into American law that life begins at conception inception and then a fetus is a living person but the human life bill never passed follows. Embrace of this tactic set the tone of the abortion debate. Though in a way that rings through to this day the the Reagan administration was never quite willing to take real action though Because that would have cost them the political capital that they preferred to spend on deregulation India institutionalization but later on Reagan. Going at all would throw a few bones to the moral majority in nineteen eighty two one of his allies in the Senate introduced a constitutional amendment. That would have made it legal to have official school prayers as long as individual students or teachers. I couldn't be forced to say that prayer. The amendment never came particularly close to passing and Reagan himself failed to go to bat for it in any significant way though early. In Nineteen eighty-two Reagan's Justice Justice and Treasury departments did reverse the IRS revocation of tax exempt status for Bob Jones University but this sparked a massive backlash at the administration for basically supporting segregation with taxpayer. Taxpayer Dollars Yeah. Yeah Bob Jones keeps insisting they're like no. We're we're really committed to segregation. Yeah it's our religious beliefs. It's not based on racism. It's based on what we think God wants. We know about air than anyone which is racism but not our racism. God God God so it's fine. It's totally not us. Yeah so Riggan backpedalled in announced that he was now seeking congressional ban on tax exemptions for racially early discriminatory schools. This happened and so while the moral majority wound up. Supporting Reagan's reelection campaign. The Christian right came out the other side of the Reagan years deeply disappointed in conservative. The politics we only got some of what we wanted. We didn't get everything. Jerry Falwell however was not the kind of guy to put all of his eggs in one basket through the early years of the moral majority over. The course of Reagan's two terms. Jerry fought an epic battle for the soul of the First Amendment with a man who might rightly be viewed as his greatest nemesis. Larry Flynn Glenn Larry Flint Baby. I know the hero. Finally a hero arrives. And we're GONNA talk about that hero but you know what else is a hero. Oh so via now. The corporations who sponsored this podcast Cook Coke Industries Stories. You mean coke here hero in distreesed heroin mysteries by coke products now well no no sophie's somatic. So if he's very mad at me. Sorry I'm distracted thinking about when I'm going to utilize the sling. Next the Moldovan that bagels really discussed. Isn't it so her so much more on this Bagel keeps putting it next to the food. I actually put in my mouth and I'm like why are you doing that I can't explain my actions. I just do them. Speaking of.

"We're deeply unhappy at all. This government overreach chose to focus on the Carter Administration which actually doesn't doesn't make a lot of sense. The Nixon administration had started going after evangelical schools. Bob Jones University had lost its tax exempt status more than a year before Carter took office but way rich and and Falwell ignored all this. They made it their overriding goal to ensure a conservative kicked. Carter out of office interesting that fact in on attack the Republican Party for their role in this they just go after. Jimmy Carter interesting kind of makes you wonder if maybe it had more to do with the fact that these were Richmond Than Christians. But that's just a conspiracy theory on my part. I mean being rich like crazy rich in this country is a conspiracy. I see theory. Yeah now the leaders of the moral majority knew that segregation was not exactly a major vote winning issue in nineteen seventy nine. There were not going to ignite and evangelical political movement by focusing on racism or any of the other issues. They were most obsessed with at the time way. Rich and fall were also both opponents of the equal rights amendment they they supported the banning of pornography but as way rich later recalled. I was trying to get these people interested in those issues and utterly failed so they're trying to like get the religious religious right on board with like banning era banning pornography allowing schools to segregate. And like they really. They can't get anybody on board. Nobody wants to hype about about these issues. People are at Yeah Yeah. It was a different time but abortion provide the moral majority with an easy cause to crusade against a banner other propagandized. Christians could rally behind stop. Killing babies is an easier battlecry than keep black people out of our schools so that is why they pick abortion as at least the public face of the movement in this brings up the question. How do the moral majority Organiz Evangelical against abortion if abortion hadn't been in a big part of evangelical politics prior to that point? The answer to this as with so many great questions in American history boils down to they hated women. Being Free D- Yeah of course. That isn't a great vote getter either so they frame their opposition to abortion in the equal rights amendment as being pro family. There we go that I'm going to quote Doug Ban more again over the course of the nineteen. Seventy S ministers connected defensive the traditional family with opposition to abortion abortion feminism and gay rights such rights to those in the moral majority attacked the tried and true social order that had persevered for generations according to the moral majority who could possibly be anti-family family in addition it was this return to moral sanity that was trying to restore America from the upheaval of the recent past. Rather than speak out directly against gays feminists in abortionists. They often delivered the same. Same Message. Shrouded and pro-family terms for example moral majority leader's define traditional families those with two heterosexual parents. This carried significant appeal among conservatives in the wake of of the nineteen sixties by framing. The issue is defensive. The family the leaders of the Christian right effectively turned liberals into enemies of the family at least in the eyes of millions of voters. And this is what led lead them to their violent opposition of the equal rights amendment. This was the first test of the moral majority Jerry Falwell warned the passage of the amendment could quote sanction homosexual marriage and and mothers and girls into combat and generally injury the dignity of the traditional family gasp. Yeah he's as you hug your traditional family family member Anderson the dog now For reference. I think I should read out. The main portions of the suggested amendments equal rights amendment. This very scary family destroying during amendment section one equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex section to the congress. You'll have the power to enforce by appropriate legislation. The provisions of this article section three. This amendment shall take effect two years after the date of ratification. So that I mean that that. Yeah Yeah Yeah that that families should be destroyed amendment to the amendment was a real extreme. So obviously we couldn't have that happen fall in his fellow conservatives were terrified that the IRA would lead to nightmares like government funded daycare AAC care and paternity leave is two things that they cited directly as why the area was bad. It just seems like how can you not feel like the biggest nerd when you're like like I'm anti porn. I'm anti like all the things that are anti makes us such a fucking nerd is is that party not ever being like dudes. Were doing the nerdy shit out here. What are we doing? They're keeping women under lock and key so crazy to me like it's like if you're you're a reasonable person being the post government funded daycare and paternity leave. Sounds like lunacy But the fear among conservatives was that like if there's government funding daycare women can have jobs and then they weren't. Yeah then they won't be REC- like reliant on a man for everything and if there's paternity leave the dad's could take care of kids to and then MOMS could have careers and be independent people. Just defending gender roles is so nerdy to. It's another another like this is what I care about. I WanNa make sure that the man does man things in the woman does woman things and we've decided with those things are like. How do you even get? How do you even get enough energy to care about that? It's the only thing you care about if you're the kind of person who cares about that it's just so crazy to me. I'm like all of your life. Yes that's the like. The core of this is a bunch of people who like can't fucking deal with other people wanting a different thing at a life than they do which is really usually the core of if like sixty percent of bastardy speaking of a gigantic bastard. Phyllis Schlafly Christian activists in a gigantic piece of Shit wrote that at the equal rights amendment would be quote the first anti-family amendment in the constitution. It would protect bigamists legalized prostitution in defend rape laws. The social and political goals of your ears are radical irrational and unacceptable to Americans in the essay where she wrote this schlafly created the acronym. Stop E. R. A.. Stop stood for. Stop taking our privileges. She made an acronym with the word that the acronym is saying the title of the movie and the movie. Yeah shirt the concert like now And so Jerry Falwell and his comrades leapt into the nineteen eighteen eighty election with the intent to restore their version of God to a position of primacy in American politics in nineteen eighty follow told his congregation. We're fighting a holy war. What's happened to America? America is that the wicked or bearing rule we have to lead the nation back to the moral stance that made America great nerve fluence on those who govern US trying to make America Great. Everyone's having fun. Fuck them. Yeah this does happen and like well no I guess. Nineteen eighty was about to be a fun year. I mean people were okay disco. Yeah coming off the fun ass rock and Roll Seventies. Yeah people are just having a good time not these Jerry fucking nerd around here trying to ruin it for everybody that pendulum you have like sexual liberation and like the the civil rights movement and stuff and then all of the assholes Organiz to push the pendulum back. It's kind of like what's happening now. Accept it happened earlier I know just upsetting. It's like let women work. They'll just buy stuff for you. Yeah Nice you know what I mean like like. We're so nice you just. You just want to participate in the flawless system of of capitalism. Like everybody else we just WanNa buy shit just WANNA buy shit. Weren't even allowed to have our own credit cards. Still like the seventy S. Well that's a.

"Jerry admitted that he and his father howled with laughter some of the pranks were cruel however took them work rule as opposed to that other good print. Let's police shooting at somebody who's a playful gunshot. Sophia not one of those mean gunshots. Some of the pranks were cruel. However as when Carey decided he had enough complaints from one of his workers when the man called in sick carry offer to have lunch brought to his house then killed and skinned the man's cat putting it into a squirrel stew and sent it to the man's home for lunch? The next day complained that the squirrel maintenance had been tough Kerry told him he had eaten his own cat. That is not a joke. That's not a break that's great. It's not a Greek myth thing thing that fucking myth. They fed to his own his own kids rate up fucking ancient evil. That's like not even like yeah. Modern Greek God would do like they have no sense of human morality. Yeah it's like an Olympic Prank. It's unleashed its serial killer Shit Mount Mount Olympus fucking insane. Yeah that's something. A serial killer does Joe one hundred percent. But I'M GONNA kill each a cat like so crazy. What what does he think? The payoff is when he tells the guy just watches them cry. I think it's just he's the guy's boss so there's nothing to dude can do against him. I mean what's the reaction. He's hoping for for him to cry. Yeah I think so. Probably sell craze just a piece of shit. He's really bad person way better person than his kid turns out to be. Wow Yeah so a hearing all that. It probably won't surprise you to learn that Jerry Falwell was it outrageous drunk. His brother Garland was too and we'll carry was a relatively peaceful drunk preferring to get wasted home alone. Most most of the time Garland was pretty much the worst case scenario for an alcoholic he had a tendency to fall into violent rages in nineteen thirty one. He was arrested for shooting at some teenagers. Who'd annoyed wait him? This was not an isolated incident garland. Falwell had numerous arrests for violent drunken behaviour. All of this came to a head in Nineteen thirty-one which is probably the worst year of young Jerry Falwell's life it was certainly the worst year of his father's life carries daughter. Russia and Jerry. Sister was struck ill with appendicitis Kerry didn't believe in hospital so he tried to treat her at at home her appendix burst and she died of peritonitis at age ten. There is a dead. Isn't that also. Like son of a bitch snuck one in there. Isn't it also an incredibly painful way to die one of the worst I understand when your appendix explodes us like the most painful. It sounds like a terrible way to die. Yeah also pretty cool that you have so much like hubris ultra free yeah yeah 1931 to there's actual medicine by that point for real real. Yeah now just a few months. After Russia died while Carey was still deep in grief Garland got incredibly drunk and started shooting firecrackers. Someone in town called the cops APPs on him for some unclear reason probably boiling down to the fact that he was really wasted garland became convinced that his brother carry the one that called the cops on him he tracked Kerry down and started. That'd shooting at him Kerry grabbed. His shotgun returned fire and killed his brother instantly. Oh okay that delights it's me. Yeah that's great you're GonNa like this to the local newspaper. wrote of the event Garland Falwell is dead thus. His turbulent career of terrorizing the police in populace was brought to to an abrupt close. Even the paper Shit on this like this is the worst guy. Inner City wants to dance on his grave. Tonight that's literally the tone of it. It's just like Shit. Thank God. He's dead. Ding Dong it in. It's one of those things like Kerry falls. Obviously a bad guy. Sounds like this was a totally justified homicide. I mean if it's just fucking horrible people killing each other is this. It's all a win win. They're both people who use guns as ways to punctuate like gunfire to punctuate their arguments. Well yeah I mean I feel like the only people then. They should argue with each other. And that's what happened. That's great. Yeah Yeah I prefer to use a nice throwing bagel on a sling as a way to punctuate my rages. I mean again would be more impressive. You could actually master the throat. You know It's it's it's new. You got to leave outbreaks. Have I can throw them with my hand. I'm trying to learn how to use the sling. All right it's outside like they said in the now. No I'm only ever GONNA use it in recording studios. You're fired at some point. Yes eventually I will cross a final line and damage equipment in this studio and that will be the end of this podcast anyway. Back to the Falwell's so things are going great for the Falwell family in one thousand nine hundred eighty one daughter dies of appendicitis gunfight between into brothers leads to one of them dying. Yeah This all broke Kerry Falwell. His alcoholism got worse. After this point Jerry would later recall the mini nights that his father spent drinking being heavily and sobbing over his brother and daughter. All these scandals further isolated the fall woke land from mainstream society in Lynchburg in this was all exacerbated by the fact that Kerry was the second generation atheist so he was not In line with the values of the town either now Jerry's mother. Helen was a very different person. Her family were hardcore baptists. Some sources will say that. She wasn't religious until her son started his church but this seems to be untrue. She even made sure that Jerry gene went to church every Sunday. Religion was part of Jerry's life from the beginning but it wasn't a huge part and for a long time. It seems like he Kinda took after his dad in that regard so he goes up a little bit of a wild child now. The third person who helped to raise Jerry Gene Falwell. was there black nanny. David Brown Gerry would later write in the mornings. He bathed and dressed us. He held in rocks at naptime. He Fed and changed us. He helped us with our first faltering steps and he picked up off the ground when we stumbled fought or fell. He was practically a member of our family but he ate alone on the back porch and and sat in the shadows when he wasn't needed. Wow sounds really valued him as a human being. Yeah yeah this is something that he writes. Regretfully about as an and adult As a kid you know kid from the beginning he took after his father both in the fact that he was filled with ambition in reckless energy his father taught he and his brother to drive when they were both ten years old. which is you know the right age to start doing that? there were allowed to drive around the family property as much as they wanted when they were thirteen. Kerry lied about their ages to get them driver's licenses. He was so jerry. Falwell was the first kid at his school with a car which obviously helped to social life kind of kind of washes away a little bit of the shame of of your your dad. Killing your uncle. People are cool car. He's I don't even care that his dad shoots at. Gerry was a good student and you took after. His father was intelligent ambitious and energetic but he also took after his dad with a dedication to mean spirited pranks when he was in fifth grade he led a snake loose in his classroom. This will be the least disturbing the pranks that Jerry Falwell commits. You look so excited to tell me I'm so excited to talk about. I love it. It's like I I love it. Whenever are these people have pranks in their history? I it's like talking about Saddam Hussein threatening principal with a gun like that the things that they call brings. It's like yeah for rich people. It's brings. Yeah it's a sauna prairie attempted murder Yeah In nineteen forty eight. When Jerry was fifteen his father died of liver failure? This at Gerry Hart and quite possibly had an effect on his behavior in high school but also is the least surprising way. Wait the non alcoholic. Yeah that was the only way Jerry Falwell was going to go shooting himself. Accidentally Yeah Jerry formed a gang called the wall gang with his friends based on the fact that they would meet a at a wall to hang out. That's a that's very very creative. I don't know if you're aware of this. But but Virginia in the nineteen forties was the world center of Creativity Jerry was the leader of the gang because he was the only one with a car and he liked to lead his group into a series of fist fights with other gangs around town winters rights. That Falwell insisted things never went beyond quote a few split. Lips the occasional broken bone own and small-scale property damage. Jeez yeah the the odd broken bone like who hasn't formed a gang to break other people's bones a little little bit. Why do you think I was laid today? youthfully just cracking somebody over the head with a two by four. You know how I like to be a rascal if you do it with a smile on your face. It's Ascoli. Yeah exactly as long as you're not frowning now Jerry's pranks grew more brutal in his late teens teens. I'm going to quote again. From God's right hand wants to punish neighbor. The gang thought had called the police on them. They grabbed some old tar soaked railroad ties and lit them on fire in front of the offender's so that is that the asphalt of the street would catch fire but it did entire street was inflames skills. A prankster also took a darker. Turn like his dad that he could be cruel. Many years later he would recall taking on a teacher whom he described as a mean. Little man who pranced about in our phys ed classes and who exhibited prissy falsetto ways. Falwell tackled him took off his pants locked him in a storage closet and then pin the man's pants to a bulletin board in another part of the school another time he placed a live teacher. Yes yes this. Is Jim Teacher. Holy Fuck teachers are usually the abusers. Yeah I think this guy I think like any clearly did it because he was. It's like your gay pants off school for that. No he's rich. Wow another I've seen sure fucking fee and blocking in a closet mainland pants to a wall had that's so fucked up. Yeah liaising another other time. He placed a live retina teachers drawer when she opened the door. The rat jumped out and the teacher fell unconscious to the floor. Now that's a classic prank. Yeah I mean that's the only one you could actually consider a prank. Yeah I guess the snake those are like good natured country prince if that if the snake bite is like like a gardener snake or something yeah then at the time then it's fine good natured. Fun Yeah abusing physically in paneling lighting..

It's exactly that kind of sling except for it throws bagels and I've got a very moldy bagel in there. I know you look horrified am I. I'm very touched by this gift. Yes that is trail kind of. I mean he would say it's the opposite of killing babies. I would I'd say it's stripping people of their reproductive health right interest of clumps of cells but there's a disagreement on that fundamental level. Which is why are Dr America's sliding towards a precipice of any? He went to talk about Jerry Falwell. Let's get into this. According to some bullshit scrap of paper called the constitution religion and politics are supposed to be separate things in this country in fact churches can technically lose their tax exempt status. If they're seen to advocate Kate for specific party or candidate strongly oddly enough. That never seems to happen and a few million Christian fundamentalists have succeeded in holding large chunks of our national discourse hostage for decades now. Now how did this happen detail. Well it wasn't always this way. Sophia was it used to not be normal for religion and politics to be as is directly a thing as they are today in the answer to how things got where they are starts with a fella named Jerry Falwell today he is thankfully dead person but once upon a time he was alive and he fucked up a truly shocking amount of things for the rest of us. That's what this story is. This is the tale of how all of the different chunks of American Christianity at least the unreasonable chunks of American Christianity got together to really limit the rights of women and Gay People. That's that's that's that's the story of Jerry Falwell. I feel like you hate me because you're like unless invite a bisexual woman to talk. I want to invite the person who's going to be angriest hist about what we talk about today. Hey Fair enough. I got pissed off writing it like it was not a good time Jerry. Lamon Falwell I was born on August eleventh. Nineteen thirty three. That's a dope middle name. Why are we not focusing on? It isn't cool middle name. He had a twin brother named gene Who was born roughly at the same time but gene was boring? And we're not GonNa talk about him today. What about a sister Lululemon? Wouldn't it be weird. If that was the the reality of the situation that the same family gave us the religious right and Lululemon Yoga Pants. It's all evil so it is all evil. Yeah very overpriced Yoga Pants. Gene Green and Jerry were born in Lynchburg Virginia town named for the man who invented lynching fortunately he invented well. Okay but it's not actually a sad story he invented lynching to do it to British people. So it's not racist. Yeah I guess it's I'm fine with lynching British people aren't swayed alienate. Our Shaw Sophie. We've done so many episodes on British people British fans. I don't feel too big In English English God damn it took the name rights. See I know. Prince Harry's hot continue. I don't know what's not hot. The British Empire in the millions of people killed sharing. No Empires led Debbie Downer. I know and that's what lynching was invented. It was it was invented to Lynch colonial overlords Lords. So I'm just saying lynching turned into something problematic but it started from a good place a desire to hang colonial oppressors by I thumbs that was also the original lynching. I can't wait to see the t shirts this is going to inspire you. I don't know how I'm Robert Palmer. The ways in to defend lynching seriously you're making headlines Right now that no one needs and I am always trying to be cancelled. Which is why I recklessly throw Mouldy bagels else in a room well miles and I have invented cancel Vania and he lives that really? All right. Jerry Falwell's father Kerry Falwell which is frustrating to me frustration to right Jerry Yeah Yeah Kerry. Falwell was an incredibly successful apple businessman. He broke away from his family history of being poor farmers to start a grocery store in nineteen fifteen at the age of twenty two by nineteen twenty one. He done well enough to start opening a series service stations around Lynchburg to provide fuel for the growing automotive community. Carey's main innovation was to add a small store or restaurant to each of his stations. This idea proved popular enough enough that he eventually opened seventeen stores in the Lynchburg area so he invented that. Yeah I think he was like one gas station seven eleven type things one of of the guys like I think a few people hit upon the Were selling gas. We might as well sell some fuck and others therapies. Yeah yeah but he's like one of the one of the pioneers of the gas station market industry. That's Pretty Rad. Pretty red he's a he's a cool dude. You're you're going to like him more than than Jerry. I mean. That's not hard. Yeah that's not hard. He was an objectively better person Although still pretty terrible Yeah so Kerry success in the business led to him starting a new company distributing oil and gas to sixteen counties in Virginia Jerry. Falwell's best biographer. Michael Sean winters describes describes Jerry's upbringing as affluent. I prefer the term Rich Hill. Jerry grew up with no financial worries of any kind but that does not mean his childhood was easy. See Kerry follow was great business but the rest of his life was kind of a train wreck for one thing he was not the kind of dude who could keep on the street and narrow. He opened a hotel in a dance. Dance Hall which led him to sponsoring cockfights dogfights and a variety of venues. This was a legal at the time. These were not. You know respectable cockfights. He's okay this is the things that are going down for in this episode. You're dying on the hill of lynching and cockfights while I'm not dying. I'm just saying it was an illegal. There's a subterranean level to cancel Pennsylvania under regular Pennsylvania. And it's smells a lot there. Yeah IT'S A. It's a welcome only worse than cockfight smells. It's just story. Just ignore dogfight part of the story what the Fuck fucked up. I'm saying it's bad. I'm just saying he's dying on the hill or apologized Anderson. I am sorry Anderson. I just wanted to make it clear like Virginia in nineteen. Anything could be legal. I just wanted to make it clear that even even among in that these are not these were not legitimate dogfights again the facts separating it. It's like people who say what is it they're like. Oh Yeah There's consensual consensual sex and nonconsensual sex. No none conceptualist XS rave. You're doing a real similar job over there. I I assume there were legal dogfights. Virginia's well the good kind right away. Withdraw all dog. Fighting is bad. I'm glad at Tokyo but I suspect uh-huh just saying these were particularly bad dog fights just letting them your you dog lender if you split hairs enough eventually you split an atom that blows up your career. That's a beautiful saying thank you so Jerry Falwell got into the bootlegging business after getting into the dogfighting business His partner in bootlegging was. His brother Garland They would use the trucks for their oil and gas to deliver liquor to all of his century store. So that's how they would hide the liquor isn't the gas trucks which I'm sure made it taste great These illegal venues were incredibly profitable in a nineteen twenty seven. Jerry Falwell started another legitimate business the first bus company with routes between Lynchburg in Washington. DC that's good bringing lynching to other places pretty cool as long as it's the kind of thumb lynching that's not racist. Yeah Gary was too rich and too smart to get caught breaking taking the law constantly but everyone in town knew that he was the shadiest motherfucker in the city. This meant that the Falwell's were ostracized from high society. So they were rich but they weren't allowed allowed to hang out with the other. Rich folks sounds cool as house that does sound like the best kind of rich to be right. You don't want to hang out with losers your fucking throwing your money and you're just like not because that around that Dorky fucking rich people like Italians right. That's all they're doing just castilians left and right. Sounds like they're constant debutante ball. Sounds like no no but I think this this was. This was a bummer for Jerry Falwell as a little kid. But that's not love to debut he was a big debut her for the debut West so Exacerbating their sort of pariah status was the fact that Kerry Falwell had an unfortunate habit of playing profoundly abusive pranks on everyone around him. I'm going to quote now from a very fantastic book. God's right hand by Michael Winters Jerry. Falwell would later recall that. His father was a prankster. Jerry wants brought a friend home. Who admitted he was scared? Kerry Jerry told his father of his friends. Fear half cautioning half Golden Kerry as. He brought the young man into the house. When the young friend walked in Kerry shouted routed stopped aimed a pistol at the voice feet and shot a hole in the floor? If you insist in front of his shoes I've been trying to get that fly all day. Jerry's father announced returning to his newspaper while the boy fled fled the house..

"The kind of fascinating alliances with jerry falwell you had you had feminist like like catharine mackinnon an android dworkin making common cause with religious conservatives and making the argument against pornography and the problem with that argument in hindsight was that it it sort of you know it was made at a time when we had rising crime all across the country and the sort of the crux of that argument was pornography is gonna turn men into rapists and the fact is we now have you know twenty five years or so of exposure to mass pornography and what we know now is it doesn't turn men into rapists rape rates have not gone up in many cases they've gone down since then what it turns men into is the kind of man you don't wanna be in relationships i think you use the line about you know it makes the internet keeps the internet warm but ultimately the fascinating thing that i think you can see in cultural experience in in the literature about this porn it cools it cools ardor ultimately and it turned it it sends you on the quest like any drug for that sort of new high that you know that new king that new perversion but ultimately it it has a chilling effect fascinating lee on the male libido is wild coexisting with a lot of unhealthy acting out well and and and since we're both christians we can say that you know yes god created us good he invented sex why in part now we all can save procreation we get that but the other part of it is that sex is designed to keep couples together it's designed to keep marriages and families i should say to together there is something foundationally relational about sex it is not meant to be a solid cystic thing and so the internet of course has you know it's it's it's no different than talking about the invention of the pill in nineteen sixty or sixty one once you divorce the thing from this other thing you have a problem once you divorced sex from procreation with the pill or something else you have a problem but in this case we're talking about divorcing sex from the other thing which is.
