"We do our prep unite like we're supposed to but you get nervous for your interviews. I mean I get a degree of nervous less. You're probably one of the lowest ones because we're such good friends who are life and I I, know. I know you're pro at this but yeah, there still some nervous about I need to for some people. Yeah. Not probably not every time but most times I feel somebody fly I most nervous if I don't know that much about them. Yes. Cause I'm like I I've done all I can do. And I. Don't know where this is going to get. You're GonNa like me maybe sure. Yeah. That's exactly right. Yes. The dollar rebirth, my two biggest REBA. Yeah. You and Aaron have started a different show. Tell me about that. We have a new podcast on the other side. Yeah, and it's been fun to work with my husband Aaron and we knew we wanted to start a show for a while and the reason it's called on the other side is because we wanted to showcase stories on the other side of whatever that story might be. I. Don't want to necessarily hear the story of how this happened to you. I WanNa hear like what life is like on the other side of that. That's so we had a handful of gas like a man named Tom Parents who was in the KKK? Oh in the sixties went to prison all the things Slough. So that was such a good show Jerry Courtney. Yeah or that's been so good at Jonathan Alina pits on the show a man named Jonathan mccombs who actually lost his entire family in a flood and so We finished the first season. I was like I sat down with Erin and Lindsey, and I was like guys we're going to some happy story. It's kind of like what we're talking about like powder. We see that God made these things matter and to me, it's my instagram six I enjoy your stories of tragedy that sounds so awful but it gives me so much. Hope a little bit but you made it. That's right we're not. GonNa make it yeah. So we can just find that by searching on their side okay. Is there anything we didn't talk about the on talk about anything we didn't hit thousand thing. Well. You know the last question we always ask because the show is called. That sounds fun. Tell me what you are doing for fun. Oh what am I doing for fun? When we're recording this actually this weekend we're going on vacation Oh that's fun. So what we're doing for finding staying in a hotel, not children and eating every single meal out maybe four meals a day. Great. Yeah. Brush breakfast lunch just shake that mass then. Austin Hussein in Austin a hotel that we love and we'll just. Eat and sleep and lay by the pool and do married people thing. Yeah. Okay. So girl. So as I am not married yet, tell me win you know it's time that you and your spouse need to get out of your house We're recording miss in one month September September I knew in July. Okay, it was on the. Air I have been for entire Mary's we married nineteen years very intentional of not even just dates like that's the are so intentional about day we're so and I'll tell you what if you're listening if you're listening to any of small kids and you're like, I can never get on a date you need to get on a date right now yes. When your kids get big. Yeah, it is so hard for us to go on a date. Really they're always there. They actually want to hang out with us and they have all these activities. Need. To slow. down. So that's always been intentional but that's more difficult in the in the last couple of years. But getting away by a hotel going someplace it's really good for our marriage because it just kind of reminds us like, Oh, we're not just functioning day day as. Co runners of this home in these children. Yeah that we function well that way. To do and so getting away and it just feel special and we're going literally thirty minutes from our house. Yes I think people need to hear that like you don't have to go to Bora. Bora. Our love to go to war. We're not getting anywhere. But you don't have to do this big massive, you can do a weekend hotel thirty minutes from Your House hundred percent and save up a little bit of money and be able to eat out. Yeah. So it's important. That's really fine. I'm GonNa tell you that and that's a great thing. Right before book launch gets crazy here. Yeah. Even out today. It's out. In the scenes yes. Happy Book Line. Thank you. Betty poppers around here. All. Right I love you. I'm really cheering for you. This is a great book. Thanks. France, don't you love her? I know listen what an.

"The right. Twig of the right limb of the right branch of the tree. And I've got them on the left. Twig of the left branch of the left. You know and everything in between and for me I have just found and I really mean this sincerely we have the we have so much in. Common and in those common spaces are meaningful. They matter and they're they're lovely and they count and so I'm just that's not going to be that's not going to weaponize friendship and longing and connection what do it now other people will and I've had to make my peace with that so we're just not so I say that because it does not mean all of my relationships Made it you know that all of my relationships made the leap but I would say the ones that had something really beautiful intrudes core. They all did. Yeah Yeah I think I struggle sometimes when this is like corentin talking where we're going for it like we're eating pizza at city house so we are by people. Aren't listening I it. It is hard for me at times where I feel like we're allowed to be friends with non-christians but we're not allowed to be friends with Christianity. Don't agree with so crazy right encouraged to have friends outside of our whole belief system but it is harder to be friends and I disagree with a lot of people. I don't agree with anyone all the way including myself with anyone all the way and so I I just am. I struggle when I would be encouraged to have some nonbelievers on my podcast or talk about them. Books but people who don't believe with a certain stream of faith would not be welcome early. How how do we relearn that in our brains and and with the understanding that there is still absolute truth and and we still believe that Jesus is the son of God but how do we learned to be friends with people who who are in our faith system but aren't in agreement with some things that some of us find to be really big important thing? We're asking a huge question of a very big old system like this is not new and this has marked spiritual spaces for a really long time. Which is I find it. A little bit more Putative IN THE WEST. I think Russell has gene is now only punitive and hilariously since we are literally the last people to the party. We think we've got it Also we've got it figured out. We are correct. We are right. Weenie here this generation in the newest country on planet Earth have figured it all out and so with our certainty in our arrogance those are just two flip sides of the same coin de are certainty which we love. We don't just love it. In religion. We love it across the board. I'd be looking America. Hello comes a very clear line in and out you're with us or you're not you're right or you're wrong you're good or bad. And so these are binary options you and I have been presented since we were kindergarten. It's our face spaces and we know it. I can't go back and trace that thread throughout my whole life win people were in out and so I think you're asking to challenge something that is incredibly entrenched and so. I think it's a good question and I think it's really good work but anybody. Who's willing to do it? Who is willing to sort of reach across and grab hands and hang onto connection across different doctrines or different interpretations or just whatever the thing is I mean? Even different denominations that can be very very persnickety. You'RE GONNA have to be prepared to pay the cost because your community has been conditioned to shame you and threaten your belonging if you do not follow this rule and so it's GonNa require the levers of courage to say at whatever cost I reject this invented rule that that you get to tell me who I can love be friends with and be connected with and even learn like which is crazy. It's crazy making. So here's what I would wanNA say one thing I've learned because of course I grew up in that exact paradigm And fear is an incredibly useful tool rice. Gear you into following the rules right but if you can give yourself permission to live in that way where you say that type these aren't my boundaries and I will maintain beautiful friendships and relationships with people outside of this construct. There is an incredible community out here doing that. Like I thought I knew was all there was because that's all I've ever known but on the other side of that were you. Just lay that down and say that's not. I'm not going to operate my life like that. Oh my gosh. What a beautiful community of people that value spiritual curiosity which is not a value inside the system and asking questions and saying tell me more about your experience are and just listening and it's not it's a sort of a space of learning and and perspective and then even then was into the thing and go. Okay I I see that. I still don't agree with you back Expert Sharing Sharing Enron that. We both liked the same thing at Taco Bell. Yeah that's interesting things for telling me more about kind of how you came to that and and so I wonder the chapters fierce is called. I value spiritual curiosity and I learned a lot about this as I kind of looked backwards at the Jewish community and specific even all the way to today where spiritual curiosities pretty high value. Yeah well you know. They ask their kids. What what question did you ask? Today was the best question yesterday. That's what family's yeah. Isn't that so great? I raised opposite of that. We you did not ask questions. We were those were not allowed and they were subtly or overtly shamed and made you. Were maybe fell. Disobedient or unfaithful you know and so I think what a wonderful what a wonderful possibility to re engage spiritual curiosity to hold things lists league in and say what is there to learn here like what is there more to see. What have I never heard or learned experienced or I've just finding a wonderful way to live. It feels very very rating. And I'll be frank with you any like for me saying Yes to that actually gave me back my face. I mean I kind of reached a point where I might. I don't want this. I don't want these people. I don't want this system. I don't want all these men who are telling everybody else what they can and cannot contribute to the body of Christ I don't want this patriarchy. I don't want this white supremacy. I gotta run any of it. I don't want this. I don't believe this. I think this is not true in not good in not real and so I- Spiritual curiosity where God just got to be God again and we just got to be. People and belonging was no longer a weapon. I'm like Oh there's my face like there's my sense. Belonging is no longer a weapon. I mean I just yes that that's that matters to me. I think that's beautiful. It doesn't you're good at this. You're really good at that you. Have you have a lot of relationships in a lot of different buckets and a lot of different ZIP codes and I see that in you and I think that leadership matters right now means something and you know this you and I both know this? We may operate out of some old rules right now. But you know this next generation. They're not gonNA have it like they're not gonNA have. I'm telling you I'm raising them. I know them I see them. I lead them so you then are coming up in a different way and so I think we it behooves us right now our age group to really think about the forms that we grew up pin and imagine that. It's time for a new wine skin and we are either going to be granted permission to speak into the next generation or they're gonNA leave us behind. Yeah yeah at the. That wine thing has been important to us because I think I think I've you've seen this. But our church got destroyed by a tornado the before corona virus and one of the things. We've been talking about so much as we didn't know how much we would grieve old wine skins. We knew we had new wine. We didn't know we would grieve losing old wine skins. Let's it and but what the Scripture says. Is that if you put the new wine in old wine skins you lose both it breaks open and spills and you lose buzz and that just matters to me. Yeah it just matters to me. And we're thinking about the next generation and what and even my friends who are listening right. Now that are our age is an older the thing I just try to say a lot and want to say like if you don't want to be friends with someone that's fine but trust that I do want to be or don't can't we. Miss each other's spirituality. Enough to go like. I don't have to agree with you but I beg your reading the Bible. It's great and where we ended up on different places and I'm still going to believe that this is true and I'm still GonNa say what I find to be true and just love everyone else anyway. Yeah right says that Bob or is it says love Bob at Jeremy Courtney. Oh Jerry Courtney love me by preemptive anyway that's right. Yeah I think the sense of this impulse to take ownership over everybody else's spiritual discernment is not a good impulse. Yeah but I feel I feel it too are going wait. Wait what if what if I feel it? Yeah do you make one hundred percent but I? I generally feel it when I am observing in somebody else's either theology your practice however you want to. Parse that out to modify is to my observations feels like it is causing a lot of harm so that is when I also just right. Yeah when I when I when I jump right into judge and jury and so don't hear me say that impulse deal. I know it's just it's really hard and I think this is why we can look at scripture in all the ways that meanders through story in the allegory and history and poetry. And just see this like very steady three line of love as the measuring stick. I think that's why because we have this text that is expected to like serve. Christ followers throughout every generation in every culture in every country. I mean it's just feels impossible. Frankly and so. I think this like this. This through line of love is a really really good standard for us to constantly check everything against and literally everything every interpretation every experience every new every understanding ever hermit it and we can if we're not sure we can look look out with our eyes and see a bare out on actual people pretty pretty good. I mean there's a reason Jesus said Love God first and then love other people like let's just under what else to do like if you're trying to figure out which rules to follow tried these two on like yes. Yes and if you look across at a neighbor and you don't know how to treat them just start there. Don't you don't have to give up what you believe but start. They're totally hundred percent at. Yeah we gotTA okay. Listen here's the thing that we haven't gotten to that. I think we save for Youtube because I I need to look at your face when we're talking about Hamilton. Oh my can we do that on? Youtube? Oh Yes yes. We're going to do that next. We're GONNA do five minutes on Youtube about how we feel about Hamilton. Exciting because if there's one thing that is tied our nation together at near I say our World Lin Manuel Miranda sure sure is if there is your baseline after love God and love other people that we can all meet on..

"She had our names on all of our stockings but she had him like listed like mine. An E. M. I. L. Y.. So my stocking was as long as my name. Well guess what my sister's name is. It's Mike Willin write. Her name is spelled M. Y. Q. U. I L. L. Y. N.. And so guess how long her stocking was. Oh it just has to be. Did it get filled all the way. Yes yes that Mike loved. Hey Jerry Courtney author of love. Anyway I lead an organization called preemptive love and one of my favorite Christmas stories took place in in the days leading up to Christmas. Two Thousand Sixteen The city of Aleppo in Syria had had had been at war conflict for a number of years and New started breaking that the city was falling back into government control and it was a humanitarian disaster but we were able to be there on the frontlines responding and and it was amazing to see the global community really for us led by the global church rallying in the spirit of Christmas in the spirit of incarnation in the spirit of self sacrifice and love to serve the people of Syria it. It was just just profound to watch us as a globe to watch the church as a people really live out the thing that we were supposed to be celebrating in those days leading up to Christmas that that we exist for everyone. That that that incarnation would mean we should move toward the pain that would would mean. We don't just preach values of grace and love but we embody it for all that it's worth and that we would even come come into a place to give our lives away that we would even be born to die so that others would live. It was a profound found thing to watch millions and millions and millions of dollars poor in because we saw our I shared humanity together though separated by faith by ethnicity by an ocean in many cases and it was truly one of the most inspiring profound things I've seen in my entire life to see us live out the story to live out the thing that we say we believe and I guess I could just long that every Christmas would be so rich. Okay so I'm Heather Avis. I am the author of scoot over and make some room and my favorite Christmas story so in my oldest daughter I came home. She's adopted She came home at three months old and in the last the end of October and on December first she had open heart surgery and she was on oxygen twenty four seven and and so that meant we were doing Christmas at my parents house. They live up in the mountains. It's dreaming like snow stockings over the fireplace fire in the fireplace. Ace just dream Bill and because my daughter was on oxygen we couldn't have a fire in the fireplace. Not Safe and so we. I felt conflicted.

Patricia. Hearst was trying to make sense of art history. She stared down at her textbook trying to ignore her fiance, Steve, who studied economics next to her on the sofa. She thought midterms were coming soon. Steve answered the door before Patricia could warn him not to last week. She'd worried someone might be following her. You never knew it was a strange girl at the door. She was agitated. She'd hit a car in the garage under the complex and wanted to borrow the phone, angry and disgusted. Patricia went to the door. The dumb girl probably hit Patricia m. g. roadster she'd give her a piece of her. Two men burst into the house and the girl grabbed Patricia, be quiet and nobody'll get hurt. The girl pointed an automatic pistol at Patricia 's face before Patricia could scream. Again, one of the men was straddling her on the floor foods, pressed against the linoleum. She could hear Steve crying, take anything you want anything you want. He said, Patricia tried to get free, but the man yelled at her to keep her head down and gagged her intruders, blindfolded, Patricia, and dragged or to the door. Steve continued screaming in complete shock, Patricia. Worried. They were stabbing him. She spit out her gag and screamed bloody murder praying. "Of human flesh burning is one. You remember for the rest of your life, it haunts you like a bad dream. Never quite forgotten even when long gone, which is exactly why it was so odd that none of those who witnessed the fire would remember smelling even hint of the pungent aroma burning flesh at the time of the fire. It wasn't just a smell that was missing. Not one witness that night would remember ever seeing a child's face at the window, nor would they recall hearing cries from any of the five children supposedly trapped inside was like the five missing solder children were never even there. In a matter of less than an hour, the solder family home was reduced to rubble. Fayetteville fire department did not arrive at the scene until eight AM on Christmas day. Some seven hours after the fire had started by then there was little at the firefighters could do beyond hose down the smouldering embers that lay among the scorched remains of the solder family home when all is said and done. All that was left of the house was an ash filled hole where there had once been a basement. Once the scene was deemed safe. The fire department and police began sifting through the rubble. It wasn't long before those investigating the scene came to a startling discovery. Impossible. We'll just have to keep looking. We'll find them. I don't see the point. We've been out here for hours if they were out here, we would have found something by now what the hell am I supposed to tell the family that their children just disappeared into thin air. I mean, come on, they have to be here somewhere. Why don't you tell them the truth, the right, nothing here, but ashen Dirk easy for you to say. You don't know George Saadeh. He's gonna wanna know for sure what happened to his kids and he ain't gonna except I don't know for an answer. You got any better ideas. George, jenny. Good. I have a word, of course, chief. Did you find them? Did you find my babies? That's actually what I wanted to talk to you about, oh my God, you found the bodies. God just tell me they didn't suffer. Please tell me they didn't suffer. I'm sorry. Gone. If you guys want to take some ashes from the scene for a memorial or whatever you're planning you're more than welcome. It's all right sweetheart. It'll be all right. Can we see the bodies? Well, actually our investigation, it turned up some unusual findings, unusual unusual. How. It's unusual in that we didn't actually find anything. The thirties search of the scene uncovered no bones. No remains no indications that the missing children had even been at home at the time of the fire. Despite this absence of any physical evidence, the authorities quickly concluded that the missing solder children had all parish in the fire after all all the missing children were last seen playing in the living room before presumedly turning in for the night and going to bed upstairs. They had been inside the house. There simply was no other explanation for what could have happened to them or was there this question would spur families decades-long long search for answers that would stretch from the foothills of West Virginia to the bustling streets of New York City and all the way to tranquil beaches of Palermo, Sicily. Next week, the search for the answer to what happened to the solder children continues as we discuss. Just the discovery of a human heart. The disappearance of a family hired private investigator and a mysterious letter from one of the missing children as we'll see the mystery of the missing solder children has provided far more questions than answers.
