GOP Election Success Deals Blow to Democrats

"Let me do the rundown because I'm still in a great mood. Jenkins, Virginia win offers midterm road map for GOP warning for Democrats, opines, the headline of The Wall Street Journal this morning. Voters punish Democrats and lift amid left drip according to axios. A couple of great quotes in the story this morning. Clearly, the president's drop in favorability made it very difficult for the democratic nominee to stay above water. Democratic Jerry Conley told axios D.C. in my colleague selection night event in Tyson's quarter, Virginia. That's what happened. A senior aide to New Jersey Democrat told axios alania Trini, quote, it's insanely clear. The party must reorient not on center left or progressive goals, but on what gets real things done for family. You would think so. How bad was it? The New York Times has a headline story about a little tiny district in San Antonio. John luhan a 59 year old retired firefighter won the seat a blow for Democrats because Joe Biden carried it by double digit points, only a year ago. My favorite headline in the morning in The New York Times from Jeremy Peters and elisa Lerner Republicans pounce on schools as a wedge issued to unite the party as I put online. Headlines are not the fault of Jeremy. He's a fine reporter. I don't know Lisa. Headlines are driven to get quicks. Republicans haven't pounced on anything Republicans have been talking about schools in red and purple states for decades. Virginia is a blue state. And so the education issue is erupted in Virginia, proving that blue states can be turned red when parents see the indoctrination of their children going on. New York Democrats assess losses to Republicans, according to The New York Times, quote, this was a shellacking. Up and down the Empire State Republicans won election at the local level. Reeling from surprise losses, Democrats sound the alarm for 2022 according to Jonathan Martin and Alexander burns the two Bigfoot republic the democratic reporters reporters on Democrats. "More now and campaign 2020 Joe Biden is focusing this week on States that President Trump won in 2016 with plans to visit Florida, Iowa, Wisconsin and Michigan and the closing stretch yesterday. Biden was in Georgia, which has not voted for a Democrat for president. Since 1992 joining us now to talk more about this, Jonathan easily national political reporter for the Hill. Jonathan, Thanks so much What is the book for having made? Yeah, absolutely. What's the Biden's campaign strategy here in the final days? Ah toward Election Day. Well, I mean, look, the polling is strong enough for him right now that he can really look to expand the map and pushing the trump country now Iowa, Ohio, or sort of traditional battleground. The Trump won both states easily. Eight points, nine points. I think In 2016. A lot of people didn't think those would be up for grabs. Necessarily that hugely shocking that they are. It is shocking that Georgia in Texas appear close to being tipping point states really in going blue for the first time in decades tour, Biden was yesterday. There's also too competitive Senate races. In Georgia so huge, huge state when it when it comes to who is going to control the Senate next year? So so, Yeah, I mean, basically, Biden has the money advantage. He's got comfortable control lead in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. So he lookinto. He's looking for a blowout and have a big coalition behind him if he does win the White House. But Jonathan is this risky at all for the Biden campaign? Could it be a mistake to spend time in a traditionally red state such as Georgia in hopes that he's going to have some kind of a big blowout in the battleground states? It is risky. I mean, you know if he doesn't win next Tuesday, if he doesn't win, people are gonna look back to his travel schedule and say, Well, what were you spending time in Georgia for what we spent in time? In Iowa for I think it really just goes to the degree of confidence that they have right now that they're already leading in some of the states that represent Biden clearest path to 270 electoral votes, which is You know, the easiest are most likely path for him is rebuilding that blue wall that Trump not down in 2016 in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin. Now Biden is going to be in Wisconsin. I think it's his first trip there is a general election candidate. This weekend s O. They are. They're spending time in some of the more more traditional battleground state. But there's no doubt it's a risk, you know is people going toe would look back to his trip to Georgia. If he doesn't he doesn't win the White House next week for the sense of confidence coming from the Biden campaign. It's palpable. Is it not? I mean, you're really starting to hear from Democrats across the board express a little bit more comfort with with where they're at this late stage in the game. I mean, there's fewer and decided. Ah, lot of people have already voted. I mean, it would take it would take a massive polling error. A TTE this point for Trump to win Now he still got a shot. You know, it didn't look like he had a very wide path in 2016, and he put together just the right combination of State to win the electoral college. It's a narrower path this time, something like, you know, be equivalent to pulling an inside straight poker, but it's still there, and it starts with Trump winning Pennsylvania and Florida. And now polls show Trump trailing in both those states, although it's close in Florida, and it's always closed in Florida, But you know he Trump wins Pennsylvania and Florida. If anyone's ballgame, so the race is still very much up for grabs. The Democrats are getting more confident by the day, Jonathan. Great to have you. Thanks so much. We appreciate it. Thank you. "John. This is the John Batchelor show by colleague Francis rose was the host of government matters WJLA in the nation's capital on the federal government workforce, and it's operatic, and it's conversation with congress, which has a supervisory role, especially the house of representatives, where the money comes from Francis vagrant evening to your conversation with Representative Jerry Conley, democrat from Virginia is about the opium, the opium to my memory was the target of Chinese bad acting some years past in, which as I recall reporting accurately led to the ransacking of the records of major numbers of covenant workers, including the most secure government workers, those working in intelligence gathering behind closed doors. And my memory is that nothing was done about that ransacking. So there is a plan now to put opium together with another apparatus in the government is this going to answer the ransacking of opium has there ever been an answer. I do not recall, the Abam administration making much to do about it. Good evening to good evening. John. Thanks for having me on the program. You're referring to the cyber breach? That was the biggest cyber breach that we know of in the history of the federal government, at least millions and millions of records taken including the security clearance forms of people fill out. So that stuff had the most sensitive information, you can gain about someone those directly to attacks at that time, I wanna say it was twenty fifteen or so. And the, the gist of what happened that is correct Francis. Good memory spring fifteen please. Thank you very much. And the, the gist of what happened than John was that the office of personnel management information technology systems, where antiquated then the people who are running the office of personnel management now for the Trump administration say that not much has changed the General Services Administration is the name of the organization that the Trump team wants to move OPM's function into. And they say that GSA is better positioned to absorb that information technology system and make it more secure to hold that information. More securely than opium is by itself. The argument that's happening. And I in congress and that has been happening on my program over the past couple of months is that Jerry Conley and others Jerry in particular, significant because he's the chairman of the house oversight reform, government operations subcommittee, which has jurisdiction over these matters, Jerry. Conley says that what really is necessary is for PM to not continue to be starved resources. He used quote starved for resources by Republican congresses on the program that you'll see Sunday morning on channel seven in Washington. And if oh, PM does receive more resources as the houses appropriations Bill includes that opium will be able to get back to back to on the path to health. That is not an opinion shared by everybody. What is seemingly shared by everybody, though? John, is that what the Trump administration has presented so far is tremendously insufficient for congress to be able to make decisions about what the rationale is for the move. I want to clarify the opium hack. It was revealed to all of us in the news and the spring of twenty fifteen but the investigators believe that it started some years before, and that there was contrary information. So we're not now. Relitigate. Getting the opium hack. Well we're looking into how opium merged into GSA? It's wonderful Francis. This alphabet soup being mixed around trying to what you have to remember, does it become. O G, P, S A, something like that. What this means in terms of personnel do people lose their jobs to they move buildings. You've got large institutions, and people get loyal, but you also have an apparatus that rates people, and they can move between agencies. So is this going to be a boon for hiring or Lael? So one of the challenges there, there's two pieces to that, that I wanna make sure people understand, John one is that when the acting director of opium was on my program within the last month or so her name is Margaret Weicker. She's also the deputy director for management at the office of management and budget OMB another part of the alphabet soup is the budget office in the management office for the president of the United. States. So she's the number two person in that office. She's also the acting director of the office of personnel management. So she's a very busy person when she was on my program. I answer that question. I said where will the human capital, people who rely on opium for services in policy making functions? Go when opium if OPM doesn't exist anymore. She said, essentially, they'll go to the same people, those people will just be located inside the General Services Administration. So that's one piece that of that question that you just asked the second piece though is a new development that as of this week. Ms Weicker said, if congress doesn't give them the latitude that they need the Trump administration, the latitude, they need to be able to make this move at the end of this month, their financial resources will be such that she will be four if they don't get the clearance by the end of the month at the end of the fiscal year September, thirtieth OPN will be forced to. Off one hundred fifty people because they won't have the money to pay them anymore. And if that happens after I believe it's thirty or ninety days. I apologize that my memory fails me on short notice, but after one of those periods of time then the riff process reduction enforced, I e layoff process can begin now, one of the things that Jerry Conley addresses on the program is the amendment that he introduced this week to prohibit that from happening to prohibit. Oh, PM from, from laying anybody off, Jerry Connolly represents a district in Virginia that circles Washington DC, so he has lots of constituents that work for the government more broadly, and that work in particular for OPM. So there certainly is a constituent service effort to the amendment that he's offered try to prevent those layoffs also quickly. We have a couple of minutes here. The Trump administration's production fed document production failure. What does the document production? What is that, like a Xerox machine? No, the house oversight committee asked for documents about this merger and about the FBI headquarters building, which the GSA administrator, Emily. Murphy is implicated in and also in the old post office transaction GSA. Discover. Of of of misconduct. Yes. One example that Jerry Connolly cited at this hearing yesterday on Thursday, was the letter the correspondence from legal counsel at OPM to Margaret Weicker about the legal standing for the administration to do what they want to do with. Oh, PM, the entire document was redacted, every word of it, and according to him, if they were confident that they're playing passed legal muster the entire document, wouldn't have been redacted for submission to the committee of jurisdiction Francis. Just twenty seconds because it comes up now. And again, and you're the man acts are there, redact, or specialists in agencies people who are hired because they're really good at drawing black over people's. I'm not aware of people whose job. It is specifically to redact information. But I imagine there's a lot of money to be made by selling sharpies to the government, John. Yes. I can imagine this would be a novel someday. One of those French absurd novels. My job was acting. That's the way it begins Francis, rose. He is the host of government matters, WJLA and the nation's capital. I'm John Batchelor. I'm John bachelor longtime colleague Bob about something with a website, you start your kind support is most well, two dollars five dollars monthly subscription says for twenty five dollars donation. Give I wanna thank you. In general, the black dope. Yours most. Well, I'm John Batchelor. "Senior member of the ways and means committee will join us in a moment. Top Democrats have told axios that the house committees want to call Trump family members to testify with subpoenas. If necessary before some committees besides Russia topics include conflicts of interest, money laundering, and Jared Kushner's security clearance and other White House clearances democratic guardsman, Jamie Raskin member, the house oversight committee tells axios that the committees are zeroing in on the Moscow project the Russia connection and the influence of other foreign actors like Saudi Arabia today cars when Jerry Conley of the oversight committee said it's all about methodically. Building a case. How do you reconcile that growing belief that criminal activity took place, and it has the tation even reluctance to consider impeachment? Well, I think what you're describing hesitation and reluctance I'd rather describe as trying to be methodical. And and building a case here if a case is to be had we can't ignore criminal activity. But remember, this is the first public hearing, the first it has to be a process when we look back at Watergate that was almost a two year process, and it worked it persuaded the American people that the person that put faith in didn't deserve it leading off our discussion. Now democratic congressman Lloyd Doggett of Texas. He's a senior member of the powerful House Ways and means committee also with us former federal prosecutor, Barbara mcquade, she is in MSNBC legal contributor and Jill wine. Banks former assistant Watergate special prosecutor, an MSNBC legal analyst is with us and cars and dog, and I want to begin with you and the ways and means committee. You're a ten. To obtain the president's tax returns. This is a power that the Senate finance committee has with its jurisdiction over tech -sation and the House Ways and means committee has this jurisdiction over taxation. It is rarely used in my years as working as the staff director of the Senate finance committee. I never saw it used. And so the system is a little rusty about actually how to use. It does congressman Neal feel that he has all the legal counsel. He needs now to proceed with asking the IRS to deliver Donald Trump's tax returns. Well, that would really be for him to say I have confidence in him, and the pro cheese taken here, clearly the evidence grows by the day of a potential criminal enterprise here, and we have our work cut out given the confidence that we need in the tax system for the American people given the role that the president can play in tax law and tax administrative decisions. There's some estimate. He may have gotten as much as a billion dollars for his family out of the recent tax law. So we have so many reasons in addition to what Michael Cohen is said this week to look at the tax law tax policy. And then our committee also has a responsibility for others the possibility of significant amount of Saudi and Russian influence through investments in Mr. Trump's enterprises that also needs to be explored. So I'm hopeful now, we're three months almost into this session that we will move almost immediately to get personal and business tax returns in order to get a full picture of what's going on here. You're familiar Lawrence as you said with the statute, it's almost one hundred year old statute, it makes it clear that all it takes is the signature of the chairman of the ways and means committee to request the treasury department to provide these returns, though, I think good groundwork is being laid here to lay out. A very legitimate set of legislative purposes that will be met by getting these returns cars when I just want to clarify for the audience that one of the purposes of of the committees that chairman being able to obtain the returns is actually for to understand how tax law is working..
