Costa Rica in Madagascar beans from plantations on the Indonesian island of Sumatra in the center of the store Schultz sees a mysterious gleaming metal machine with a large tree in the front a cheerful man wearing a red bandanna is pulling a metal scoop from it. What does this machine do? This is the roaster. We roast the beans for a long time until the green coffee beans turn a deep brown. The man stands by the machine leaning toward it cupping his ear. Oh what are you listening for for the beans to pop twice? That's whether done Schultz shakes his head in disbelief for him. As for everyone else he knows coffee comes from a can not being. This is why the coffeemaker orders are so big Schultz realizes that all. The coffee's been drinking his whole life has been nothing but swell before. Schultz came to Seattle. He set up a meeting with the company's owners. Now he heads upstairs to introduce himself to the two men. Schultz can immediately see that. They're both at least ten years older than him. And why is it so important to roast the beans dark that roast differentiate starbucks from everyone else the finest beans can withstand the heat the darker you roast them. The more flavor you get coffee is simple. Just watering ground beens but when you have the perfect means it's one of the world's special pleasures Schultz nods. He's envious of Baldwin's passion for the beans. It borders on and Schultz has to admit that although he likes his job. There's nothing magical about plastic products on the plane. Ride back to New York. He can't stop thinking about starbucks. He thinks maybe just maybe by the time the Plane Lands Howard. Schultz knows what he wants to do with his life. The next day he takes his mother to lunch in midtown. Manhattan Mom. You know. I haven't been completely satisfied lately. Well I have a new goal. I want to leave. New York moved to Seattle and become part of this great new coffee store. It's called starbucks. You're doing well you have a future. Don't give up everything you've achieved for a company. Nobody ever heard of but despite his mom's warning he can't get the idea out of his head a few weeks later on a cool and rainy Seattle morning. Jerry Baldwin is in the starbucks store unpacking a new shipment of Kenyan beans. The phone rings he size. He has a feeling WHO's calling. Is that kid from New York again. Hello Again Howard is the third time. Schultz is called this week. I don't mean to be a past. I'm just so sure I'd be a perfect addition to starbucks but we don't have a position for you. "Poking on you know and their stance on this issue their stance on after the fives and I think that this is actually one of the more tense moments right because we do all work together and care about each other and you know stand with each other on some issues and then there are moments of disagreement right with with people that you usually feel like you're you're standing on the same side with right I I imagine I imagine that their their support of after thirty five is is challenging but well let me answer that because I love I'm you know both these people have been personal mentors to me I'm in their seat Marco can add this seat and then Jerry Baldwin so I'm you know I think the rapper that congressman Paul can't just put out a statement today raising questions I'm not I don't think he would say today that he is in strong support of this it didn't sound that from his statement I think he is hearing from people and I know him I know he's a thoughtful congressperson so helpful his stance previously has been teleport and I think people find that letter unfortunately yeah and I think there's a difference between saying I want more more information and saying I'm ready to pull the plug on right project right and it sounds to me like you and Emily are ready to pull the plug on this project yeah I will say might might want to pull the plug yeah and I'm like I think that makes you makes you position pretty differently than a lot of other folks in right insufficient leadership a million what is success look like for you what is it what does it look like two two reconciles style this issue what is truth and and reconcile reconciliation look for look like in terms of having accurate information having the communities were most impacted at the table and then affecting the outcome right so what is the outcome you're hoping for you're doing all this work you're traveling across the country you're spending time away from your like amazing Cato what do you hope that results in well I hope that are low Congress leaders in Congress will sit down with those who will be most impacted again and that's a listen right I think that Chris is yeah I mean Chris is a politician she's a great politician I think operating like most people operate when they have friends they disagree with in their area he is that they try to have a conversation to to come they'll bring things to light and and I and I appreciate that I presented a whole can and senator Baldwin has to come around on that's what success looks like to me is that they are more creative and more courageous about how they're going to bring economic an economic boost to their districts and we've heard from the airforce colonel I Greco who is in the field for thirty years and it's your job to know more about these weapons delivery systems in these weapons than anybody else in the world and she said that Madison to get a different mission a medical mission a mission that employs ten times more people bring ten times more of the economic impact and it actually used to rescue people and help people and so what I am hearing from the community that is most informed about this project in these airplanes and people who are finally got into affordable housing and don't want to leave is that they don't want this noise because it will harm no I think that its leaders across the spectrum of leadership in our communities in Madison I and congressional leaders could put aside any sort of notions of grand your about their personal legacy for bringing a defense contractor this city or bringing money in back trying to any model higher the machi I mean really spring money don't bring money anyway bring money the right way bring money in a way where you don't have to sacrifice people who you claim to support I think that ideal outcome for me is that people sit down and remember that we all are have burden bear some far greater by than others and we all have families we all have our health that we want to keep intact and that we can come to a conclusion here where everybody benefits and nobody is farms and that means a different mission the F. thirty five do not come here and by the way Ollie everywhere else they've been stationed aside from Burlington where they just arrive has been at least thirty to three hundred miles away from the capital city and then for that yes but that's that's one of the things I I was curious about in terms of success because you know if the environmental impact is significant here than the environment and mental impact is just isn't enough again right and so I I really what I really appreciate about your answer Millia was was that your answer wasn't after thirty five go somewhere else they your answer was we do something else and I think that that is the answer we don't get very often a lot of times were like either we do this or were missing out on these jobs in this opportunity right so if you want to join this conversation if you want to tell us what you think of F. thirty five you want to talk about the options or why you think it's a great a great thing to have a great way for us to invest whatever your opinion as we want to hear it so give us a call this is W. or TI eighty nine point nine I'm your host this is a public affair and you can reach us at six zero eight two five six two thousand one we're excited to hear from you all and have as much of the community involved in the conversation as possible and I honestly I have to say the vote for the folks who are are enthusiastic about F. thirty five I'm like your perspective would be it would be more than welcome to because I feel I struggle to represent that that perspective honestly so I I'm gonna ask Chris you know when you talk to people who think that this is a great idea who think we really need to do this you mentioned that the chamber of commerce a couple times you know what it what is it what are the things that are driving folks just say yes please say yes you have one F. thirty five yeah and I say that you know look I just have I have great respect for people Sir in the military my dad was a veteran so I don't come to this space set you know I with any kind of preconceived notions I have respect I have great respect but what we hear time and time again and this is frankly what they heard in Burlington Vermont the proponents arguments are very similar they're almost exactly the same is if we don't take these chats we potentially are gonna lose a flying mission at true acts and it's going to close and that's going to cost a lot of jobs and millions of dollars well the thing that's so frustrating about that argument is it's been disputed and refuted by the airforce the airforce is someone who makes the decision it's not the Air National Guard sought the chamber of commerce it's actually the Air Force and they have said look that's speculative it would require two or three assumptions at once and they have said there are other options for Truax besides F. thirty five so but it's it it just keeps going this argument and it's mainly perpetuated by the chamber of commerce well I think those and so I think maybe it's possible some of those folks want to represent their perspective themselves because we we let up a little bit right and I look at three people are pretty excited to talk about this one person who has it was multiple questions so David thank you so much for joining us on W. R. T. eighty nine point nine for a public affair how are you doing today well think Wharton thanks to you on the show just two brief comments one is that I agree with Chris and the others and we have to explore all options but the time might might come I hope it doesn't but it might come where if they cram this deployment down our throats in court challenges and lobbying and petitioning and trying to reason with the powers that be doesn't work then I think given the fact that you're gonna have tens of thousands of people severely impacted on the side of medicine I think is going to be of a lot of social base there from mobilizing people in mass nonviolent civil disobedience a year yeah if you are eighteen year out here organizing on the radio right now on the other end toward that end our mayor such a is celebrating her birthday on Sunday if he's having a public fund raiser birthday brunch at the old sugar distillery nine thirty one east main street and that's between eleven AM and one PM so some of us who are also active in just say skies coalition we're organizing a silent vigil we're going to be out there with their signs shot solemnly you know because it is a birthday party for her and so we're not going to be real a lot of nasty about it but we're going to be out there to let her know and our message is sent you is going to be Happy Birthday site yeah best wishes to you and for the rest of us no F. thirty five so I would urge everybody to see she was like a very wholesome you know party crasher variety of pro testing and I I have to you know appreciate the that David thank you so much for making our listeners aware of of that opportunity to express your opinion non violently and peacefully and thank you also for bringing our our mayor into the conversation mirror site tia who has who has taken some some serious heat around around her stance or lack of stance in terms of of after thirty five a million would you would you kind of speak to your your position on that because for me I have struggled to a certain extent with who all were interested in criticizing and blaming for F. thirty five who really has the power to do something about it and who is virtue signalling and and pretending to have the power to do something about it in order to it to play nice with everybody on the S. mass and so a meal yeah what it what are your your thoughts on on site T. as lack of of vocal mess around F. thirty fives I think it is synonymous with everybody else who is a leadership position in that city that normally advocates for those most vulnerable novel in our community but it's taking us stock stance on this because of the potential that the idea that they could gain from it politically or financially and that is just my I am coming back when it is I can't imagine it could be anything else well I know is no kind of quite in my opinion isn't it quite possible that such a isn't trying to address pollution at the federal level via our military because she is trying to you know make significant changes to our police she is trying to make significant changes to our public transportation she is you know literally lit legitimately trying to do her job and and okay focusing on online yeah you know what I have I have often out issue taken really bold steps that I very much appreciate and that many of us the working towards for six years but we're not in a position of power to bring those sports news she she had taken significantly bold steps that I very much appreciate however I it is my understanding that that you did not set out to be a career politician who needs to give and take it in such a way where.

"That's not playing for some reason and out here and let's say the another let's try this again I don't know whether the White House isn't directly involved because we can't get an answer that question but we do know that they are making some claim that a privilege may apply well that narrows the category who may be intervening here and in typical government fashion rob because they don't know what's going on what are they going to do next week we'll have an open hearing with the director of national intelligence where he can explain to the country why he believes the surgeon concern should not be shared with the Congress because the one thing the American people never get is a hearing. so we're gonna be hearing the good for ratings yeah right so is is that we have here and look how that turned out for them so so now we don't know the president says it's fake news he said today he would never do anything inappropriate on a call with a foreign leader now wash PO did some digging robin they said this complaint was filed August twelfth in the president at was at his golf resort New Jersey the White House records indicate he had conversations with at least five foreign leaders and preceding weeks including Russian president Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong moon of North Korea. legal experts are raising the argument that while the presence communications with foreign leaders could raise concerns from intelligence officials he also has broad authority to decide what's classified and what isn't. so so somebody heard something that might be from the president with a foreign leader that might have been promising things any legally can't do and we should have a hearing about it exactly but you gotta understand that think and feel free to weigh in three one two five nine one eighty nine hundred on this entire story that a lot of reporters are running around trying to figure out what happened and they want to prove this is not fake news and we still don't know what it is but maybe Jerry Baldwin has more information Capitol Hill so we're gonna be talking to him next for now I'll send is copper news.

"But then also to you know, so that guy was fortunate that he was able to start his coffee company in that area where it's kinda cold. It's always wet. It's always kinda like down and people probably need coffee to hype themselves up. They don't have a normal circadian rhythm. Yeah. I mean, how weird is that to think about, but that's. That's that all plays into it. And so, yeah, he's lucky, but man, what a pan the dick. It must have been to start up. Starbucks. It must have been really hard. I mean, he did get a little help from number two who does number two work for. Well, she invested in Starbucks early on. Yeah. That's huge. I'm pretty sure that help you know, kind of boost everything and get it out to the masses hail yet. But he wouldn't have been able to get help from number two. If he didn't put in the work. You gotta put it out. You got to put an at work. We gotta have that grind talking about Austin Powis. You know, and then also another famous person from that area guy by the name of Bill Gates. I think Bill Gates grew up in Florida. I could be wrong could be pulling some of this out of my ass. But I know that the next statement is leased correct. Bill Gates happened to go to a school at a really young age eleven twelve thirteen somewhere in that age category. He happened to go to one of the few schools that had computers. So you start to think about that. It's like. You know, holy shit. What would happen if Bill Gates? Would have Bill Gates didn't have a computer when he was twelve you know. Yeah. And maybe all this great stuff that he created. Maybe it would've never happened. Or maybe it would have been prolonged or like, you know, who even knows. Anyway, I've been playing around some ideas, something I wanted to do I took a picture today at the first Starbucks ever. I was thinking about maybe we maybe about weekly or maybe every other week or so posting something up about, you know, an entrepreneur that I look up to because I do get people ask me like, well, who motivates you or who inspires you? I'll look these people up sometimes I'll look up like Benjamin Franklin or Albert Einstein. We're all here. Some somebody will say something here on TV or hear it on another podcast. And they'll say, oh, yeah. That's like so-and-so's theory. And I'll be like, oh who's that? Who's who's who's who's theory? Who's got a theory about some? I mean, look the shit up. You know? And I'll look it up and 'cause I never went to school. So it's like I now that's what I'm doing nowadays. Like, I'm taking myself to school. But I was thinking about sharing that on my Instagram with people and saying like, you know. You know, here's you know, this week. It's I was at the first Starbucks, and it spire me to look up information on. I forget the dude who started it, but inspired me to you know, investigate him. And I wanted to share all this. I think it's Mike something I want. I wanted to share all this information with you guys. And hopefully, this spark something in you to get you hyped up. Oh, man. I have a couple of different name, all I'm sure. Jer Jerry Baldwin. No, wait. I think it's Eric Badran Eric fired when somebody on here's probably answering already for us.
