"All that happened. Ben and jerry's was we we said. Yeah we're going to be political and but we're going to be over honest and instead of doing it just in our own narrow self interest. We're going to do it for the interests of the community. As a whole yeah. I years ago. I met with a guy who started an organization called represent. Us got eighty percent bipartisan support. The whole point is to get corporate money out of elections and the information that they provided the public. It's wild coast at an event for them and it was wild. See how shocked people were about how much corporate money goes into politics..

"Folks. Welcome back. I am talking to the father of dallas jenkins jerry jenkins jerry. Welcome back listen. You're you're famous for the left behind series. I want to go back to that. Because you said that you know you sold its close to seventy million books of all the books you've written And you did this with tim. La hay what year did you start. And where did the idea come from was. It was a timber. Hey idea and he came to you the writer. It was tim's idea. My agent called me one day. And he asked me. If i've ever met dr leeann and i had not of course was aware of him and and even had published him in magazines that i'd edited in so but my agent said you know. Tim is a bestselling non fiction writer. Who has a great fiction idea in urine novelist with no ideas. So let's get you gas together and And see if something might spark. And you know i met with dr les. He was about the age my parents he passed about three years ago now but there was a father son dynamic there and i really respected admired him as true evangelist really selfless guy and real heart for people in the i did love his idea and i also love the fact that he acknowledged that he was not a fiction writer and didn't want to help write this because that's not usually a good recipe if you get somebody that you know. Thinks they're fiction writer and they're not right and so we stayed in our lane. He was the expert that the scholar. The the theol- kept me on track that way. He was also a great cheerleader. I would send him one hundred or two hundred pages at a time and he'd say send me more on what happens next myself but it just really turned out to be a marriage made in heaven we had a great relationship for many years and In books just exploded. It stunned us off and continues to stunned me that they're still selling to this day. And you finally got to meet kirk cameron. I know you always wanted to meet kirk. That was my goal seriously though the movie. What's that actually i got..

"You. How'd you hear jerry jones there. I don't hear anything. those were you can. Just take that quote and throw it in the trash because it doesn't mean anything right now. Dallas is slated to pick third and we can talk about what that means because it has massive ramifications for the future franchise if they're picking near the top of the draft. I believe personally. If they're picking third they should stick with deck potentially trade down if another team wants to trade up take quarterback there because after trevor lawrence and justin fields. You're just praying that whatever quarterback you take in the draft even comes close to dak prescott. It's too risky. As a franchise. That has had a lot of difficulty finding quarterbacks by the way they looked into debt prescott now if they pick first or second. That's when it gets a little bit more interesting right because those quarterbacks are very good. You'd have the rookie deal. That's very alluring. My feeling is that if the cowboys can extend back on a reasonable deal and get a massive picks. That's something they should consider. Instead of taking fields are lawrence first or second. they're sticking with deck page. How did you hear jerry jones. Their minimus not have been around when they made that deal involving herschel walker. That's not happening again. In the cowboys franchise history but if they did get the first or second pick. I think that they should consider that possibility of moving. Because they're going to have to with dad coming back from a horrific and guy that's going to get paid just two hundred fifty million dollars like patrick mahomes. You have to end up paying him that. I think that it's a possibility that if you could get fields if you get. He had make the move. I mean you gotta remember jerry jones history though he wanted to draft paxton lynch. That's what he wanted. And he ended up with dak prescott who fell into his lap. So i don't think it's so crazy that the question should be asked israel gutierrez. Had you hear jerry jones there. I think you might have shorted patrick. Mahomes by about one hundred and fifty million there. I heard guy. And i read the great column from jean taylor. The dallas morning news. I read a column. Excuse me. I thought jerry jones seemed delusional. I thought he seemed like the leader of a stable franchise. That's ready to win a super bowl. They are none of those things they are a franchise that seems to have a lot of holes to fill. And when you're in that situation what's your options being. Hey let me pay forty million dollars for this quarterback that we have and see if we can fill the holes around him or start over with cheaper quarterback and see what happens. I think they are closer to that. Despite the fact they're in this terrible division despite the fact they were good not too long ago. But you're in a situation where you don't know if dak prescott can be the same person next season and if they do have the one or two even the third pick. It just feels false for them. What falls to that number. What are they calling. Justin feels a more athletic dak prescott so go get that guy. He's cheaper more athletic younger. And then sort of rebuild from there. I don't think it's crazy. Okay and fred guy sola you know the green bay packers drafted a quarterback Just recently and they and their quarterback. Aaron rodgers isn't recovering from a compound fracture. So how can you be the cowboys. And it's something that you don't consider a bomb jerry jones and you asked me that question today. I'm not gonna say of course looking for a quarterback my poor guy. Dak prescott is recovering. I'm not gonna make them feel even worse. But you have to be doing the smart thing here. If there's somebody in the draft that doesn't necessarily have to be in the first round some of that you think could lead your franchise you have to do it. I liked that prescott. I think you remember. He's one in two in the playoffs in last year against philadelphia essentially a plane game. He didn't play well. I mean a calm something you said well to go to the packers example. There is a very big difference between picking first second third and peaking at the end of the draft. Frank you're saying if they're picking later maybe that's when they would take a quarterback but we're talking about the at the top that would be frankly banana pi. I honestly i don't like the packers did it. I don't think it's helping friendly part in the taking that out a little bit further recently. Arizona drafted a quarterback in the first round one year the next year. They'd come back drafted a quarterback in the first round. And now they're at least for the play offs. I mean it didn't bottom team out either. I mean things crazy things could happen especially this year more than any other. We're gonna move on news.

But like I said, there's no money of politics so. There is your in politics, well, not when you're campaigning. Not If you don't get the support. We should. You do. So what do you think about the life of Jerry Springer? Wake as family came from to where he was able to do. This is crazy. You know what I mean. Like it could have been a totally. Totally different, weight. was able to accomplish and. He. He. Like did it to the Max where you can do? Knows, you know what? I'm saying he kept you kind of like Chris Jericho okay. Eagle box for that because the button in the back the beat Seattle over. Don't remember that I remember that it was it was no role and uncut music videos. No. Tony did you Love you love that write. A book called Ringmaster, that Seoul. had. A movie called Ringmaster I never seen it never heard of it, but apparently it did. Okay, maybe it was a TV movie. He wanted to run for state Senate in the year two, thousand dollars was done with I don't know to. Publicly decided because of the bad publicity excuse me playing Jerry. He decided not to go for publicity. Every springer's the. Jerry Springer at this point yes. Thousand Four. The early two thousands. Is still going heavy. But remember last week I mentioned murder. Who? In May two, thousand Nancy. Campbell pants was murdered by her ex husband after they appeared on the show with his girlfriend. So apparently, they lived together all three of them and there was a all. Already. Heavy tastes. Out saying new. Reports say that Nancy went on the show with Ralph and she thought that they were going to reconcile I don't know how you think going on. Jerry. But if they live together while you had to go on a show for that. The money. Was Lights out. But obviously like today love and hip hop and things of that nature they amp your life up. You know what I mean I guess. So he went there with his girlfriend eleanor and instead of telling her that they were GonNa get back together. He told her that he got married. Eleanor. And she stormed off the show she didn't want to speak about it and she went home. The day the show aired he strangled and beat her to death. To the point where she was unrecognizable ads crazy and two goals Widodo. With the new shorty. Link. Taxi Bounce. Who knows what happened is there were already in an abusive relationship. "Him in the media for being this monster and putting his monster content but. In reality he's just going home at night and caring for his daughter. But by then his popularity skyrocketed. So they wanted to make moves anchor again for the ratings. And this girl this girl this woman. Let me say woman I'm sorry to call you girga. Childbirth. Carol Marie she got tight and pull the Caribou. She started protesting Jerry on the. She shared his views none as you want him to be there at all. So. He started. Now he he was more likely take her shine. You know what I mean to. Bullying in our spot. Territory wasn't making no views so he had to come in today. Known I mean somebody's gotTa do it and you're not doing your job. The fact. Too Because I. Is that'd be happening but nobody pays attention to. The no matter what position said the bosses don't fuck you. He stays. The ratings. So she quit. But Jerry was hurt to us. You know what I mean 'cause he's not. He's just being himself. He's planning view stuff out there. So people view it. Doesn't matter what it is. You do what you WANNA do. You want to do. Well. He couldn't do everything you know could be everybody at once. So he stopped being the broadcast. Just went back. To show you by ninety eight, he was beating Oprah, like I said, he was number one for twenty five weeks in a row. Loose. The Monday night raw talk shows to see all that shit. She was seen in forty countries twenty, five, million people a week. New. Role. It's appealing you have a wild show and you have to. "Despite his personal life, his career popularity was skyrocketing. He won ten emmys after that. By Ninety One NBC gave his own talk show. Remember. Phil Donahue. It was right after Phil Donahue was going to air. So they put him in there like a mock Phil Donahue. They were trying to make him to vote on you know what I mean. So they played this off road. Little Touchy feely exposes known I mean nothing too big troubled teams. Things of that nature stuff. We used to do stuff like that Manteo. Trouble teams and style. Although. Stuff like that Lake Maury. So he took that route for a few years, the show was bland at best. The topics of the show they were like they took a safe road like I said. But you know Jerry. Jerry. Jerry show took a new direction. They went. They went to Chicago. So it left Jerry Commute because he was still working for the the news cast in Ohio. So he would commute. In the morning to do the show for Jerry and Dan at night for. For. The newscast. So. He was working. He said it got to be too much. So you left the newscast he just focused on the show. So around this time has show started kicking up a little bit more note I mean it was ninety three by this time so. Well. Just before. Just. Before he started with the crazy topics because it was slipping. The ratings were slipping. How they did it nobody. Was At that point. To talk show business he was just known to be this anchor local anchors local politician. He wasn't known on a national scale yet. So he moved to. Chicago In, Ninety four, the original show's producer burt dubrow will replace by former supermarket tabloid writer. He was the show producer. Richard Dominick. He's the one. Right when it all started to get juicy because I think it said. Like Right when they started having those like those ratio episodes with violent started is when he took over. So he wanted Jerry to be more Jerry because he knew he jerry was Jerry was. The Guy who sits in the back. The Share. He took over. And he notorious despite in in ratings for the for the violence that took on for those couple episodes and he also noticed that Jerry could be a star if he just was himself. That's what he wanted to focus on. Was Smart. That was playing. Everybody is doing. Must Be. Some Gabba even Jerry was skeptical at first because when the first couple of episodes of violence happy was like you know this unacceptable. On. The show. Yeah But the they needed to exploit the show's new file violence and ordered to make ratings. So he decided that they go after a little demographic that he likes to call the letterman crowd. The college, kids. At that time body was making anything for them especially on daytime television you know. So what are they gonNA do between classes they're going to go home and watch oprah. Falsely. Bucks. During a book club they now there's No Way, and any college kids are watching. TV Right now. It's we show on daytime television so smart. So he focused more on the violence, but you know it's still really didn't win over. You, know what I mean there was something missing. He needed to be sexier and. They need to know who Jerry Springer was. So the first thing they did was put his name on the show..

"Springer being an anti war democrat. He introduced an ordinance to make it illegal for Cincinnati residents to serve in undeclared wars because the US never declared war in Vietnam. Emotion lost by he gained popularity because you know controversy creates cash. Yes. We know always always. He did a lot of publicity stunts after that like spending the night in jail, try to push prisoners rights. So he was. Already, into controversy into media charged stirred things up making. Out The. There was no way I was going to be able to to reiterate that. At. Cincinnati. put them through the ringer after that. They hate him for a while. But you know that they started loving him they started rubbing about it. We we'll do. Little. Interviews and stuff they would tell them a still writing checks. Jerry. You. Always to Own. Your own home me. Stop It. Checks. He did the only thing that he's always done that he used the publicity at ran for mayor and he won he was inaugurated as Cincinnati's youngest. Law, to live seventy six. Eighty one he wanted a bigger stage and he resigned to run for the governor of Ohio but only came third. That summer he retired from politics. Broke he was broke. It wasn't really making money from me. Wholesome campaigns. He had a daughter. They had a daughter and she was she was born. Legally blind she was deaf in one ear and she was born without nostrils. Nasal passageways. So they did the surgery to fix that but there wasn't much else and he was. If nothing. Else, he was devoted father so. He needed to make a living so he quit politics. But then he had all the networks reach out to him. He they wanted him to be a news anchor. So, of course, you're GonNa go to go where the big bucks I'm GonNa, take it. They. I know you need to be getting at least every night and you know and yeah I mean we would go years without a night off. Here's to New York comics when it came from Philly Philly and eighty four. We only had two open mics Wednesday and Thursday so when guys from New York came through there was sharp. Yeah right but that's what I saw in mark when we met that night. Oh He's one of the IGUANAS those lizards. He's one with the prairie. He's not going anywhere and such a perfect mental illness. Stay and this visit passed around quite a bit over the course of these many years. I've been doing this. I haven't met a lot of them. It's true it's weird. I was like mark. Let's go in that respect for comedy and that and he didn't have that like I should be headlining. You know right out the gate and I should you know very What still no. No that's good. You know I was doing this show in London the couple of months ago and I was talking to Jim Gaffe again and he was in Spain. And I'm going. I need a WHO who I said who should get to open the show. He's yeah that's that's that's GONNA fly up from Spain just to hang out and do sets for nothing hanging spinner. He was doing shows where Barcelona Well Barth is working on this for an Amazon. I one this is really funny. That's the first one. How do you know why he knew he runs the numbers? Your instincts not question mark. He doesn't need the audience. They need him more but it clearly works and I think the reason it works is because sitcoms are so bad the negative things anymore dimension of Performer. Sitcom so bad. It's gotten so much difficult. Why to chart the culture? We did my show in the nineties. It was so easy to make fun of things so easy. You just knew what to do. You know the angle you're GonNa take and you know what that's going to be fresh and it's going to be you know exactly where their head is that we don't know we're anybody's head. Is that now in terms of in terms of three hundred million people. Where's their head at a while? They've never seen some this happened. They've never seen in all the silly stuff we did. We just knew well. No one ever did that. That'll get him all right. Let's see what other questions I wrote. I have a question because I think you're a really great data around your kiss and sausage just left for college and I'm just wondering like where you like a little puddle like what was it like for your total puddle. Everybody was. He's a special kid. She's really smart and then asked falling apart there in the moment. When you're saying goodbye in always I said so. You'll be okay right. Yeah like the most casual question kind of North American University. I think I'll be all right. Should stay here for a while but I do get the question a lot and I always say that. It's kind of like if you found a little baby alligator and you put it in your tub and you think Oh look at this. Look at this little bite teeth. Look at this. Little teeth is so cute. And then some time goes by and you go. You know I think we gotta get this thing. The Hell Outta here needs to go be murdering and eating other living thing. Do they come? Watch your kids yeah? They've seen me. There's nothing do is anything to go to work. I said I'm going out. I got to go to work. He says you'll be back at eight thirty and I go. Oh see the hundred meters Olympics. It's only ten seconds. That's would you say kids like give you the most consistent joy like or maybe eighty or creativity that is felled even frustrated creativity in other words. Just putting yourself in a place where you have to come up with. Something is the only air that we have. Yeah everything else is just. It's not good. And what's your favorite part of? It is the creating it the working on it or the finished product that you can go like. I did none none of that. None of all of it. It just doesn't matter it doesn't matter I'll get over. You have to get over being actually productive. That's the first thing you you gotta forget about. What do you use it down? You'd like sit down you sit down to work. We're GONNA WE'RE GONNA try and come up with something about that joke. That doesn't work that doesn't have an ending. Just let's let's work on that. Yeah and and I was doing that before the Sitcom when we got the Sitcom. It was nothing to me. I I've been looking at blank pages for fifteen years. I knew you know okay. We need a funny conversation. And these guys sit down. Yeah okay you know I was used to that I don't know how Comedians who don't do any sort of formal work would write a script. I think that's why they get into that situation. When we've got a couple of producers and they're going to handle the scrimmage no no no you handle handle at best writer in the room right yeah and if your tastes your tastes that matters one of my favorite days of my life. So far was last summer. I was like do you want to go over. The jokes were working on and we just sat in the room and we smoked cigars. And I mean you also got rid of about fifteen minutes of my act like he's like no and also my my closer my special. You know that was Jerry. Ameline those oh I tried it and I was like an A. Became my closer ever go after they see it they go that lining Jerry. I show one time in like I wasn't really working and you're like in my dressing room is just meeting for the first time and you gave me like the fix and I was like this is so great. It's backed out. I still remember you need to always report. Maybe our branch so so if you if we don't sit down that day we don't get.

She only has about six little voice notes left. Both of them just say, hey, call me or waiting for you down in the lobby. Try not to listen to them very often because when she does, it just puts her down and she can't do much of anything for a couple of days. Here's one of our favorites. Very nice, very nice. "Hello, I'm angry and I'm Laurin full the bomb. And we have some exciting news for you are show food stuff all about the science, history, and culture. Food and drink is relaunching as saver. We along with super producer, Dylan fake are hitting the road to find the stories behind all the things that we like to eat and drink. We'll be talking to the culinary creators eaters of the world to get to the bottom of why we like what we like and how we can get more of those things in our lives. On first trip, we went to Asheville North Carolina ST that pulled out of a seventy year economic depression with beer and food. We spoke with brewers chefs, distillers farmers, forgers historians and journalists who've been part of his turn around, and we are going to be talking about all kinds of things like the medieval techniques going into some of the most talked about new beers and how ashville was cemented as a tourist town by to Berkeley campus, and some of the things made possible and delicious by bacteria and east. Yup. Like cheese chocolate and the f. or mentioned beer, booze new episodes. Will be coming out as they always have Wednesday and Friday on apple podcasts. Try had spoken to him because he had Pete's told me said, I haven't seen you guys for weeks. It's time for me to come home. And as a win, were you think he could trying see? I can switch my shift tomorrow, but we have a golf tournament tomorrow the following week in his Father's Day. And he said, oh, that's right. Father's day's following weekend that I'll come next week and so I can be there were dad for Father's Day. And so we always said, love you. When we spoke. Ended that call with their. I love us. Maria thinks about those. I love us a lot now. Jerry work late the night of June. Eleventh. After he finished his shift, he went out with his friends to this nightclub called pulse. Pulse was a pretty well known gay club in Orlando. It was on orange avenue. This gray building a little bit of neon, palm trees out front. It was almost the end of the night by the time Jerry got there close to him. He ended up finding a parking space right by the front door. And when he walked in, it was already almost last call. Good morning. I'm Darrel Brown breaking news at this hour from Orlando or their reports of shooting at a nightclub in that city. NBC's Sarah is on the phone near the scene and Sarah good morning to you. What are you seeing in Orlando. Good morning, you know, huge, massive seen. It just keeps getting beggar. We're here at the marine, Fred woke up to news of the shooting, but they had no way of knowing that Jerry was at the club. As far as they knew he'd worked late, gotten home late and gone to bed. I got up early because I usually play golf on Saturday morning. They're very early. So it was up and I heard on the news that they had been shooting in Orlando, but because precisely because he has spoken the night before and yet said that that he was working late. I wasn't concerned at all. I went on to play golf and we had absolutely no idea that you had been the club. As soon as Maria heard about the shooting. She texted Jerry because I didn't want to call him because I figured he might be sleeping light in. So I texted him what's going on in Orlando. I kinda kept trying to call him and my daughter who was living in Atlanta start called me, and I was like, have you talked to him no to? I started getting a little concern when in so I called Fred in, but he was heading home right at that minute as I finished my round my my other son, Joe called me, and he said that I think Jerry was at the club in said, no, that can't be impossible. He said he was going to work late. He said, yeah, I think he was there. Jerry's remains a called. He'd never made it back to the house the night before. And so a dad moment I dropped everything we flew up to or landing me and we went to the hospital. There was a family reunification center in a hotel. Maria say there with with Joe and I went to the hospital Seve. He was in the hospital right there. I started asking around and they had a list of people that were in the hospital, and they told me he wasn't list. We try calling every hospital. They had taken the injured too, and we just couldn't find them anywhere. And it was such a surreal place to be because you are looking at everybody in a freight to talk in anybody and everybody looked at each other's eyes, and everybody had this kind of guilty look like because everyone was praying, let mine be okay. And then they said they were going to give us a briefing and a doctor got on a table and said he was going to read out the names of the people who were in hospitals. And he starts reading names and I find myself thinking of the irony that I was praying so hard that my son be terribly injured b. So badly injured, he couldn't have called me, and that's what I was praying for. Because the alternative was worse. As they read every name, Maria kept telling herself. Jerry would be the last. This made sense there were going in alphabetical order. Their last name again with a w Jerry would be on the list. She just had to wait. And of course they got to the last name. They didn't mention it. And then there was a silence. And then somebody said, what about the rest? Does that mean they're debt? Does that mean they're lying there in pandemonium broke up. I mean, people were screaming ladies were fainting. I mean, it wasn't just. Pain was feeling it was the pain. Everybody else was feeling. It's so hard to describe how episode terrible that was. Because it wasn't just Maya Guinea. It was like a an exponential Ag. The medical examiner told the rights that they needed something to try to identify Jerry by. By that point, the f. b. i. taken over the investigation and they weren't releasing any of the bodies. They just left the bodies in the club. And my son, at that point, my six foot boy. Looked at me and I said, baby, I think Terry's gone. Any scream. No, can't be just collapsed on the floor. And I'm like, okay, I'm five foot. How am I gonna do this? We went to hotel that we found nearby and we just couldn't imagine what kind of a night we had. We had no idea still at that point, whether he was dead or live. They returned at eleven the next morning crowd, then a little, but not much some recovered loved ones and some people hadn't no one talked to one another. There are still so many families to tell bad news to that. The officials would bring people into the stairwells just so they'd have some privacy during those conversations. Finally approached a police woman. I said, please, I just wanna know what's happened to my son. We've been here since two o'clock yesterday afternoon. We need to know. I remember they scored a out of the building and we went around the building for a moment. My heart just went, maybe they found Mamie. They're taking us to him. And I remember for you know, feeling that hope. And then I saw turned the corner and they were bringing us to one of those kind of like temporary buildings. Like the temporary school classes. In my heart. So I knew. That they were gonna tell something we didn't wanna hear, and the way they told us was was horrific to thinking back. You know, we can understand there were overwhelmed and everything else, but it was put in the room and that was a police officer. Give us a chaplain was a chaplain there in someone. Some other gentlemen and the police officer said, well, you know, there was a shooting last night and lot of people were killed, not people did make it out lot. Lot of people didn't make it out. Your son was one of them in to got up in. I mean, that was we got informed at our son was been killed in in pulse. Hugged each other really tight. Cried. The chaplains that is there anything you need anything you want to know? And I said, yes, when am I see my son. And they said, well, there's an FBI briefing right now. So we are marched within minutes of being told, our son was dead. We're taking into this REU with about two hundred people. To here. Different people in the FBI in the mayor's office, talking about logistics when our entire world had just been turned upside down in my older son had gone to get my daughter at the airport, but she flew in from Atlanta and they came into this room and I looked over at my children in all I could do was shake my head, and that's how I told my children, their brother was debt. I think anytime a child dies for parent, it's the worst thing that can happen. To lose child suddenly adds layer to that. To lose child to violence adds another layer. When you lose your child to violence with forty eight other people at the same time, there's a layer of har- that's really hard to explain. Because you're not just feeling yours, you're feeling everyone's. And it's horrible.
