"Do your day so now zero when you look at the game you know. What are you thinking about the evolution in running back over the last fifteen years. I think the evolution has taken place because of offense changes so in highschool. They started running. Kind of the run-and-shoot. They kind of took it from june jones and started to try to change on it and and develop it and then next thing. You know You saw colleges Going to the spread offense and next thing you know Once the high school in the colleges started going to the spread offense then the players change so for instance the running backs that were to twenty six foot one to twenty to twenty five right They went from a running back to a linebacker lavar tested that he was running back to school and in this day and age he would never been a question about he would have never played running back he would have always been on on the deep guy because these these offenses have shown so now they ask these small running backs to go more lateral and not downhill so because of that now you you go to the college game well if the high schools don't want those back anymore. The cottages can't find him so now the colleges make adjustments. They go to a game and all of a sudden. You only have five or six schools. That's putting out running backs that can go in the nfl. It's so you look at georgia. You look at alabama. You look at Lsu you look at ohio state usc. Maybe arkansas. maybe wisconsin. If they don't come from those schools they're not going to because the other schools don't run the football the same kind of way so now. Nfl since you can't find the feature running backs anymore now they say okay. Well we can't just line up and run downhill because we don't have the kinda running back and do it. Now we're gonna go to platoon and then now we're going to throw the football more so it's been a gradual evolution of the game because you haven't had those stars at the running back position every year usually get one guy star running back coming out of college right and this year we may not get that one guy so what happens is we don't have a free a feature running back you've got to kind of make do what you what you have in. The focus goes from running running the ball to throw in the ball. But when you get a guy like derrick henry you say you know what we are going to run him to the wheels fall off and so and it still works and it works. Yeah and when you. But here's the thing you have to find that star zeke elliot. He's a star. You don't have that you don't have those guys coming out every year. See you don't have a guy in this becoming out in the draft this year Like zeke elliott like adair kennedy. They're just there anymore because they change positions and they're playing linebacker now and so. That's the sad part about the running back position. Well let's talk about football today and your pittsburgh steelers first time in team history. There are eleven and no. But there's some rumblings that they're really not a really good eleven undefeated team that they are. What's your take on one. How they're playing in. Do you believe that they are overrated. I have a hard time believing that a team. That's undefeated eleven is overrated. But what's your thoughts. I'm but i'm sure you don't have a hard time believing that steelers overrated.

"Say. We. Say. Our say that very very but forgetful and I did it a national television I don't understand. I. Don't understand why he's endeavor did go to Michigan. I mean your heart there. You're right there. You're clear a better opportunity for me at Notre Dame. On a second, just just recharge. This battery is it's because Bo was at bowl or is it Gary Moeller? Motion Back I. I. Let me just tell you for the record on the record. What happened. Okay. So Did he hang up instead of telling the story. Again your you're. Yeah. He went to see a running back named ricky powers. Right. who was number one went back in the in the country. In Ohio, and that sent shock waves, I was a fool back. I was number one four back in the country but it told me the where the where the importance was because the tailback at Michigan is more important than the fullback position. and. They were selling me on the fact that, hey, we'll play you like Leroy Hoard fullback tailback. But. I knew once they once they signed the number one tailback in the country I knew that my opportunities would be limited. In terms of running the football whereas in Notre Dame, Lou Holtz offense was based around the fullback boom at random footba all the screen passes went to the fullback and when they went to our receivers fullback stayed in the game and he ran the ball out of a one back set. So it was a perfect scenario for me to go to Notre Dame, because they actually utilize the full bag much more than they did at Michigan, but but I was. Wanted me to play linebacker. Okay. That was the first reason. Jeremy Back. You know what I hear Jerome. Instead of instead of a tale of woe, you know what? I hear I hear that there's a me in jerome and an I and. That's what I hear. You can't spell better without an I and you can't spell jerome without me. That's what I. Know. What. I want. I was only five. To be five. into been, you know just a six foot I. would be undersized At linebacker and I was right it it it it paid off for me. So I made the right call had I went to Michigan it would not have been the success. I believe that would have. Come to me at Notre Dame at least at least you still have great Michigan ties and Detroit routes to get the Ford Motor Company Fund involved in the Jerome Bettis bus ops here foundation launch of the Second Session of checking everyone. Go again to event bright, which is event B. R. I T. E. DOT COM and search for Jerome Bettis, which again is spelled with an I and Beddis.

"So I think right now the onus is is how well is been going to be for the entire season? That Adele determine how good this team can really be I gotTa tell you man if he is seventy five percent in the the you know more focused team oriented Ben. Rothlisberger where he's not on the on the radio. And and he's More focused if you will on his teammates in a proper way, I'll be very honest here. And in that happens. Then I think you got a top five defense in Pittsburgh you know what I mean I you got Ta. TJ. Caliber defense. No doubt about I agree I mean TJ Watt could be a defensive player of the your candidate just like his bro. Bud Pre and On the back end you got Mak- Fitzpatrick and we all know the brains of the operation right there in the middle. From an outstanding institution of higher learning the University of. Michigan. In Devon Bush. Either youngster he's he's. I think he's all grown up personally. I think, I think that's you got yourself a serious defense in Pittsburgh you. Can you give that defense? You an defense turns people over and gets people off feel because they sack people and you give that you give that defense three touchdowns offensively you give them two touchdowns couple field goals you might have you might have a championship caliber team. That's what I'm saying I mean they can. They can play against anybody in the League and have success, and if they can get the running game going and Ben can can be timely I think I, think an another addition was Eric E. Brian in the middle of the field, an area where historically distillers have never. Been Very, very strong yet in in terms of the tied in putting pressure vertically and I think if if Brian can can bring any of that, it brings a different dimension that this team has is. Honestly. Never had and and that can be scary. Jerem Bettas here on the rich Eisen show few more minutes left with you. Sir, tell me about this virtual youth program designed for middle aged middle school age students. Obviously we're in a pandemic many many schools doing online learning again. Walk me through what this is and how people can get involved J. Let me just say how it started. It started it was crazy I got a call from someone in the organization and there was a young lady who's a teacher at training camp whose kids when everything went to virtual learning didn't have computers and so we said you know that that can't happen. We've got to do something. So we one day we raised about thirty five thousand dollars for sixty kids to get computers, and at that point we realized the way to second we there's a problem here. There's kids who aren't connected. They don't have the activity. So we came up with this program connecting kids and we went out and try to get with the community and we've raised money and we. Were able to to purchase over laptops for kids and so in south western Pennsylvania and that was amazing. So we you know that's been incredible for for everyone to anybody wants to help in that regard because now we're starting to go to Detroit and we wanna go all of the all of the country eventually and you know people can just go to the bus stops here, foundation dot org or donate to the text of bus at seven, one, seven, seven seven, and that's four the connecting kids part but then we say, Hey, we need to provide something because now kids are out of school and they miss some of this learning and so we came up with this program and basically. We're watching our second check in program as a second six-week virtual enrichment session, and it's totally free. It's for kids from age ten to fourteen. All they have to go to event bright DOT COM to register. It's totally free. You've got a tech innovation classes science video of film math, zoology, entrepreneurship, cybersecurity, marine biology. So many other things we've got DJ on they're going it's just Something that we saw was the issue. Now, this is for after school for kids and starting at four PM Eastern and and so we just wanted to do something to help during this pandemic, and we saw that there was a a small problem in terms of the technology not being affordable and the Internet access It wasn't accessible and that digital divide. was there. So we wanted to try to do something to step in and try to help with you know at. Underprivileged kids who didn't have that I don't have the same opportunities that other from four to five forty five PM speak as a as A. Parent of three small kids or three young kids an hour and forty five minutes of time having having Spending it and getting filling their brains with something that actually expands the mind rather than deadens it. Is a great idea and it's very welcome. It's on Mondays and Wednesdays Event Bright Dot Com. Go in search for your name. Jerome Bettis. And also the bus stops here foundation dot. Org is another way to find out stuff. Hey, man look before I let you go I'm I'm really hoping that Notre Dame plays football this year you know what? Well I'm hoping they play football this year and careful jerome you're walking into. into. Jerome Better. So I don't know. His birthday but off the top of my head, but I'm I'm assuming it definitely isn't August seventeenth twenty twenty he wasn't born yesterday was. Sixteen or whatever he knows when he calls into the show what what's This. Is Not his first Rodeo or go way back. So the reason why is do recall last year? When our Alma maters based off with one another. Correct. Remember. I. Do Recall. Okay. Do you do recall that when our monitor's faced off with one another? You and I made what we would call a friendly wager at Code I. Don't recall what I put on the line whatever it was. It was something that I was supremely confident wouldn't actually happened. Didn't okay Joe. Now, you do remember what you have to do though because you're your school law but if you were called I came on your show and I sang your fight song. As a response to that, you forget how quickly we forget. He did that did we let him off the hook? For that is this is ringing a bell. You start to get up there in age.

"It's fun. It is not fun. As a matter of fact. Would be fury. It'd be great for my team to be so dreadful and a diamond in the rough like Joe. Borough. Sitting there you've got to trade for that. You don't have the opportunity to get him because of you've you've earned it. That's the way the NFL has been done at doing it for seventy years. But no, let's put it all in a ping pong ball or some sort of you know hopper and let some team that just went six and ten after being fourteen in two for nineteen straight years because of an injury or something happened let that team get the the diamond the rough. No shot. No. Thank you. All right. He's a pro football famer is one of my favorites I've known him damn near. Twenty years. Now. And his new bus stops here. Foundation is the launching the second session of check in a virtual youth program designed for Middle School. Age Students, who as we all know? There's a lot of remote learning going on in this country right now because of the pandemic, our Buddy Jerome betta stops by on the rich Eisen show how you doing JV. Doing better for talking to you. How's your family everybody everybody's doing? Well, we say and and. Just keeping a heads underground. Okay. You just catching up on your rich Eisen shows during the pandemic. Oh my gosh. Could you imagine plane in this? Will be very scary I'm asthmatic. So this would be a very difficult decision for me to have to decide. Brian or not. So it would. This would be scary one but the football side of me I. THINK WE WANNA. Win Out because you WANNA play and that's what you love to do. But your health is is, is paramount's course scary? Well, it's not just that too. It's. It's what you might be bringing back into the house to your kids your. Spouse to anybody in your family that's of a certain age and and the I do not begrudge a single opt out not a single one out. No. Now because we don't know scenario situation, everyone's unique and their situation is unique and we can't assume while you just don't WanNa play Y'all WanNa play but it's not necessarily worth the risk you've got away at all now and and obviously for for for college we don't know kids and how it might affect. Anybody of despite being eighteen or twenty one or twenty two, and it just I just don't know how colleges doing it. I know your Alma maters gone online for the first two weeks. They made that announcement it does appear that Notre Dame football might still go. That's the scary part about big. You know the big big business and football and college football. You know you saw the the big Tandy's solve the PAC twelve did and then it created a pretty much a riff now. These schools that are are predominantly in the southern states saying, Hey, we want to continue on and and now you know it creates a a really uneven playing field because now you've got highschool recruits looking at this decision saying, maybe I need to rethink that look at a school here So possibly could play next year if this happens again. So this is a big problem that they've got to try to fix not not only dimension that the health Scenario for these kids that they're gonNA be out on the field is still very dangerous. Jerome Bettis pro football hall. Of famer here on the rich is John we've had a chance to talk since cower got in. I mean, what is your? What is your bus going to say to his with? My bus would it would say coachee you should. Just, a little bit more. A little bit more man. I mean why? Why do you think he's hall of Fame Worthy? You know. He. He got in along with Jimmy Johnson and we we you know we spoke to. Tom Flores yesterday and I think he's been waiting a long time I'm wondering if you could pound the table for anybody that might think that other coaches are worthier than Bill Cower enshrinement. Well, here's here's what you have to look and and I think a lot of times. You know people look at Hey, he's got one bill. He's got to super bowls and I, get it I understand that in Tom flurries I think he should have been in a long time ago. But when I look at a Bill Kollar, you look at the consistency of what his career was. He you know him coming in. Only, having been head coach for one team and the career that he put together. The consistency, the play offs I mean I don't I don't remember that may I think maybe had one losing season maybe to. His whole tenure and that is that's rare to say that. So He's been he was the motto of Consistency. You knew the Pittsburgh steelers when you played them, what you're going to get is be physical hard nose and you know we wind the majority of the Games that we played. So I if you look at his track record at, you know compared to other people it's GonNa it's GonNa line right up. With all those things yes, he wasn't able to win a championship, the Super Bowl that he that the the first one he went to and he lost in a couple of AFC championship games. But the key is you put yourself in that position time after time and so that just shows you how consisted he was as coach. I think maybe five or six AFC championship games and so to be that consisted for that period of time with totally different rosters you've gotta you gotta tip your hat to your own here on the rich Eisen, show What are we going to get out of big bend this year? Do you think? That's a great question, and hopefully hopefully we get you know seventy, five, eighty percent of what the player that that he has been because you always know that you know he's in the back of his hand. He's GonNa have a little a little nervousness about letting it go for one hundred percent right because whenever you have type of injury, that's always in the back of your head but. You know he has the ability. If he's eighty percent of of himself, this is going to be out of sight t because you already have a championship caliber defense that they prove that last year because the defense was only thing that kept the team eight nate just incredibly. But. Now you add. The receivers that that are in place that have have come out and play well, last you. Then you bring the running game with the still size offensive line lube older but still really good office of line I think you've got a playoff caliber team if ben seventy, five percent of himself. If you get back to close two hundred percent of themselves, I think you've got a championship caliber football team. So I think right now the onus is is how well is been going to be for the entire season? That Adele determine how good this team can really be.
Tom Brady speaks out
"Right twenty years now Tom Brady has said just about nothing about anything at all he went out of his way to say as little as possible when there is a microphone in his face yeah for a good chunk of that time he was pretty quiet on social media as well but then he started to reveal more and more on social media then he became a free agent and then you couldn't shut this guy up then he started making as much noise as possible and now that he's out of New England he's practically fighting to get in front of a microphone in the past few days alone Brady is done a players Tribune piece that's like a million words long and now a two hour interview with Howard Stern and if you thought that in appearance on store and meant that he was going to completely unload on bill E. Bobby and the pats for how they treated him go ahead and re think that one wrong assumptions were made about our relationship out how he felt about me I know genuinely how he feels about me now I'm not going to respond to every rumor or assumption that you made other than what his responsibility as coaches to try to get the best player but the team not only in the short term but in the long term as well so what I could control was trying to be the best I can be in both of those situations also so I got to a point where I was I was an older athlete and he sort of plan for the future which is what is responsibility is and I don't fault him for that and that's what he should be you and that's what every coach should be doing not that I would ever coach but you know if I'm ever in a position of authority I would understand that she I would think I really need to before that interview was I like to get his face with a game on that is a remarkable non answer even for TV forty three and I always love that movie includes this now I'm not going to respond to every rumor or assumption this made and then you proceed to not respond to any rumor or assumption that has been made you just blow right on by you don't say or respond to Jack I mean I was a chance for Brady could have really unloaded on tele check but didn't and clearly he doesn't want to for whatever reason maybe it's because he genuinely feels like Belichick is not bad guy here or maybe it's just because he does not want to air it out in public and he didn't really seem to want to get into whether or not he thought that he deserves more respect from Billy and Bobby for what he had done again I can't do his job and you can't do mine right so the fact that you could say what I'd be successful without him the same level of success I don't believe I would have been but I feel the same and vice versa as well the time isn't there some reasonable your part that he didn't make you a patriot for life no absolutely not no because this is a part for me in my life that experience something very different here's the thing I mean it is tough to get a read on Brady when it comes to Pella Scheck and their relationship obviously it's a complicated relationship put Brady is not going to let you inside that relationship not very much so what's the point of putting yourself out there the way he is if you're not going to say anything at all a new C. Mike doing a many media tore is about getting your side of the story out there it's about you controlling the narrative you know as well as promoting yourself and your brand and this new phase your career but exactly what is his side of the story again this guy's not saying anything what it seems to me is it's like he's framing things and he's being respectful about Jack but it's nothing but love and respect right well me ask you this time if it's nothing but love and respect the hell are you doing in Tampa if it's all respect why are you still in New England and what about all the reports in recent months in recent years about how strange that relationship wise so which is it exactly is it a totally respectful parting of the ways or was Brady really bad about the fact that Belichick would not commit to him in the form of a multi year extension that he wanted because Brady says it's the former but there's a lot of smoke there it was the latter all in speaking of smoke there was the revelation the Brady drank any smoked weed in high school there was that but is it really a revelation quote what kept me from smoking a lot of weed obviously in high school you try that and you drink and go to parties but I always felt like I was letting my dad down he went on quote I do have fun in high school with partying and drinking and smoking weed on occasion but as it got later my high school life does became less and less and quote I mean I guess that's something it shows that he has been a cyborg his entire life did do was not going to Baskin Robbins in high school and asking if they add avocado ice cream that when all the other kids were baking in high school Tommy was well baking in high school at least for a minute or two I mean damn what a wild man homeboy really did get loose yeah not really then again if you don't chop it up for two hours with Howard Stern not answer any questions because how it's not having that in well he didn't admit to any strain in his relationship with the hood Tommy did admit to a strain in his relationship with his wife you know because of the long hours the resistance bands the avocado ice cream the avoidance of night shades and probably that guy Alex rubbing all that lotion on his legs the fact that it was all in during the football season then once it ended he was all in on his off the field business is the fact that he was being a pretty selfish dude and Giselle was not having that you know she didn't feel like I was doing my part to the family you know when she felt like I would play football on all season and she would take care of the house and all seven of season one ended I'd be like great let me get into all my other business activities let me get into my football training and she said they're going when you can do things for the house you're gonna take the kids to school and do that right now is a big part of our marriage that I would I had to like check myself because she's like I have goals and dreams too it's just not this you know do these things either so you better start you know taking care of things about how so two years ago as it related to your laptop off for me I had to make a big transition in my life to say I can't do all the things that I wanted to do football like I used to you know I got to take care of things in my family because my family was the situation wasn't great she wasn't satisfied with our marriage damn like I gotta stop wearing my recovery performance jammies like wow I might have to eat a tomato I mean I guess that's something sort of as much as a wife telling a husband you're not keeping up your end of the bargain do better or hit the brakes I mean not that that's some sort of crazy revelation debut I think that Tommy was taking the kids to school and doing the dishes I mean his duties all ball all day except when he's trying to convince everybody that drinking water prevents sunburn of course she was passed and then there was the admission that he did not throw to some guys that he did not trust I would say I don't have any trust that this guy can you know help us to win the game and I can definitely expressed my opinion to say if you put him out there I'm not going to build the wall because I write you know the whole team is trusting me to do what's right by the team so you can't put someone out there that I don't believe in because if I don't believe in and then it'll work was for the team home shut it down let's go home he went there if you can trust you you weren't getting the ball you know again for Brady that sounds like some kind of crazy revelation he just admitted if he didn't trust you he would not feed you damn homeboy is ruthless no actually homeboy is like every other quarterback in the history of the world in that regard they have guys that they trust to run the right route and make a catch and they have guys that they don't trust the guys do they do trust get the most looks the guys that they don't don't it's pretty much out is ready quarterback ever however there is one thing that did come out of the interview that we did not know something regulatory the fact is he's got a nickname I nicknamed the we didn't know a nickname the comes courtesy of Matt castle by the way did you know the back castle never started a game in college sign Jerome Bettis is from Detroit anyway Matt Cassel never starting a game in college is now the second most important fact about Matt Cassel because the most important fact about castle he's he's the one who got lost Tom Brady the following now it comes it comes from a gaming six when Brady suffered what was ultimately diagnosed as a sports hernia go ahead ask because like like one side looks like I would say like an orange and then the other side was normal and I was like something's wrong here thank you thank Dr Brady something's wrong here we just jump in there what's your first and the fact that one testy was normal and the other with the size of an orange art Modell things you want to get that checked out Tom as you might imagine the fellas in a locker room we're not about to let that go my backup time capsule turn pictures of me like with this once you step on one thank you guys

You look at <Speech_Male> the greatest athletes of all <Speech_Male> time. They all play <Speech_Male> sport. Is those <Speech_Female> children full sports. theon <Speech_Male> too <Speech_Male> tight is that we <Speech_Male> talked about Kelsey <Speech_Male> play basketball <Speech_Male> gronk play basketball <Speech_Male> kit old <Speech_Male> plays badly basketball. <Speech_Male> And <Speech_Male> it's such a <Speech_Male> great off off-season <Speech_Male> training <Speech_Male> there's a great book <Speech_Male> by David Epstein <Speech_Male> guys <Speech_Male> called Range Right now <Speech_Male> and it saying that a <Speech_Male> specializations not <Speech_Male> working out all you young <Speech_Male> kids out there thinking. I'm <Speech_Male> just going to focus <Speech_Male> my sophomore year on <Speech_Male> one sport. <Speech_Male> It's like no way you're <Speech_Male> you're you're <Speech_Male> you're killing yourself. <Speech_Male> You're you're you're giving <Speech_Male> your <SpeakerChange> disadvantage <Speech_Female> for yourself. Do you ever <Speech_Female> think about when you look <Speech_Female> at the team. The the <Speech_Female> chiefs have put together. <Speech_Female> What could I have <Speech_Female> done in this offense <Speech_Music_Female> right <SpeakerChange> here with <Speech_Music_Male> Patrick Mahomes quarterback? <Speech_Music_Male> <Speech_Male> I love <Speech_Male> macgyver. I played with <Speech_Male> but yeah you <Speech_Male> get Patrick. <Speech_Male> mahomes is <Speech_Male> Joe <Speech_Male> Montana Tom Brady. <Speech_Male> He's he's <Speech_Male> a paint man. You know that <Speech_Male> already <Speech_Male> from. Yeah <Speech_Male> I think. Obviously <Speech_Male> he's so <Speech_Male> young. I think he's definitely going <Speech_Male> that in that <Speech_Male> category <Speech_Male> or at least on <Speech_Male> his way. And then you've <Speech_Male> got a guy like Andy Reid <Speech_Male> who who loves <Speech_Male> to the title. It's <Speech_Male> just a really good <Speech_Male> position for <Speech_Male> for Travis. Abbas <Speech_Male> Kelsey or <Speech_Male> or anybody. I mean <Speech_Male> even out there with coach <Speech_Male> Shannahan <Speech_Male> kills going to get the ball. <Speech_Male> All the <Speech_Male> chiefs team needs <Speech_Male> in addition. It'd be great <Speech_Male> to have you alongside <Speech_Male> Kelsey. Is that at <Speech_Male> two thousand and three <Speech_Male> chiefs offensive <Speech_Male> line blocking <Speech_Male> the San Francisco <Speech_Male> Front Hall <Speech_Male> of Famers Against <Speech_Male> Hall of famers on both sides <Speech_Male> of the ball. It would be a <Speech_Male> rap the rap <Speech_Male> that's the best offers <Speech_Male> of line I <Speech_Male> think. <Speech_Male> NFL history. <Speech_Male> Not <Speech_Male> to Oliver. <Speech_Male> Sure maybe <Speech_Male> a third one <Speech_Male> jason <SpeakerChange> done block <Speech_Music_Female> and do <Speech_Female> we also need to give. I'm <Speech_Female> andy meet a little credit <Speech_Female> for helping to cultivate <Speech_Female> Patrick Mahomes and this <Speech_Male> quick rise <SpeakerChange> story <Speech_Male> is right now I think so <Speech_Male> too and you know something about <Speech_Male> how about Alex. Smith <Speech_Male> is not ever forget about <Speech_Male> him what he was <Speech_Male> able to do. I mean they able <Speech_Male> to come in and sit <Speech_Male> at that first <Speech_Music_Male>

"Bit because you got got right behind Raven's fan though is very precarious. Herbal blind spots diving. You're here with hurts. Tell us a little bit about what you're doing with. As a twenty year ago member of her. It's I'm excited to to help them. Kickoff this extra mile campaign rain that they have and it's really about celebrating the hurts. Gold plus reward members. who have really helped him become number one in the space that they're in and so they're giving fifty winners and opportunity to take a really decked-out bus? Yeah to To the big game and I think it's going to be extraordinary experience. And that's that's what hurts. Try trying to create experiences for their war. Plus members that have made them The great companies at the are all right. We're GONNA talk throughout this about your Super Bowl Championship. But I wanNA talk about the experience before the a game it famously. Obviously it's your final game it's in Detroit. It's in your hometown euro. You've already built a hall of fame. Resume all the opportunity in the world. I'm sure to go see people to you know really embrace the week in the moment and we talked Emmett Smith about this and different people have different opinions. The advice you would have to the young guys is on the chiefs and the niners who haven't been Lupul and how to approach this week especially you guys were in Detroit's hometown for you but not exactly the bustling night night. Pat Is Miami Florida. How would you tell them? They should approach this power. Tell them that what they need to make. Sure they take care of the curfew issue out of the gate make sure because curriculum in a certain time well the key is you. Don't even WANNA put that to the test. We want everybody in thirty minutes before curfew. Whatever that curfew is because what that does is it eliminates any type of issue before this game? The last thing you want is for one of the guys is to be laid the curfew and now the coach has to make a tough decision. We don't want any tough decisions. We want the decision to be made on the football field. Not The before the game starts. He can't play the first half of the game or anything like that. So you want to you want to alleviate all of those issues let guys know you have an opportunity to to celebrate. You can party for the rest of your life if you win this championship and I'm testament to that. Get a chance to to have a ball because we took care of business and so once guys understand that it is a business trip and once you're done you have the rest of your life to celebrate it. Then they'll they'll take it in perspective and understand you won your super bowl. Bid On completing nine passes. How does the way the Jimmy and Kyle Shanahan are handled in? This offense reminds you of the way that Big Ben played in early years. Yeah we were a veteran football team and we knew that we were a really good team defensively and we knew we could run the football and so we said you know what we'll find a way to manufacture manufacture yardage and big plays and those kinds of things but it was about Defense Princeton running game and and when you look at cow Shanahan and what he's been able to accomplish is not that they can't throw the football it's just that they don't have to. And why would you wanNA throw if you don't have to throw it and they're going back to school football saying if you can't stop me running a ball then that's all you're going to see and if you do stop them then Mary to make the big play in the passing game. It's not that they can't they've done it all year. Long is just that. They're that good running the football they don't have to would you. You liked Shanahan system. What we would have been nice? It would have been nice. But it's not really that downhill physical type of running. I think I would have been successful but I always like to play.

"I'm happy I'm able to team up with them. So be able to do and we can vote obviously for you. I think it's Nick Chubb Christian. McCaffrey the three ground nominees. You want to make a little closing Bush for why it should be you. You turn on the tape or else so I appreciate everybody's vote so yeah week. Seventeen you guys are fighting to get into the playoffs. You also nick shove it already played had a good game. Were you aware during that game. How close you were to the rushing title and you guys ended up blowing out the Texan so I wonder if at some point in the game you can focus on all right? We got this wind. Can I get the rushing title. Go along with US getting into the playoffs. I think my teammates and the one I was trying to track it so close to me. They're like hey you're you're just you're just yards away so we're on a Dr When I got it. Oh I can't do this. You got one more play you coming out and then it mostly Three so both teams chiefs and niners. They don't have a back like that they just give the ball to us more running back by committee. How much harder is at two split carries carries? And you can't really get in the Florida game. I just think every back is different in every SIS is different how they run their job how they do this and running back by committee. WHO's hot? You know you you stay with that guy. I don't think they do a great job as far as running back. So my committee early in your correct correct. And then when Dion Lewis and I WANNA follow up there for a second anyone that scene your high school highlights..

"Three. There's nothing you can do is just talk about how the run game affects the opposite side of the ball. The defense is the beautiful thing about having a solid run game like the forty nine actually do have control the clock. You you control the clock. You keep Patrick. Veteran homes on the sideline you force them to make throws make foot pressure on office to score points. Because that's what they're doing so when you slow that down the rhythm them if you can keep them out of the rhythm lies we see them. Start Games very slow. Keep them out of the rhythm. You can take advantage of those things and one thing about cal. Shanahan and their running game is as liked Davis back in the day they ran that bogged down. Everybody's throat with all cows are running back so before nine has got a very good chance. Well what makes the chiefs chiefs chiefs for a second so so dangerous. So dynamic is they've got two big offensive weapons entire and Travis Kelsey. Who is very comfortable going to you? Had that with you and Michael Irvin. How much easier is it when you have both weapons playing at the same time for an offense? I think it creates a lot of matchup. The issues and achieves go live young Patrick mahomes along with Tara and Kelsey they have to other Sammy. Bacteria and chanted got some other guys. But don't forget we get those two running backs that they actually have everybody's slipping I mean everybody's all caught up in all the fast things that you see. It's those two running backs in the backfield heads and passes out of the backfield. Those guys miss one. Oh one here near that can make a difference for the chiefs and so their running game is going to be very very important this weekend. As well as the Ford announced in this game I think for most people base level analysis is the chiefs passing attack against the niners pass rush. So that that's a ostensibly removes the running backs from. But when you think about how the chiefs can offset the niners pass rush. It's screen game right right keeping a running back in for protection when you're playing a team with as good of a pass rush as the niners have what. Walk us through your job whether you're going to receive a pass for whether you gotta deal with the blitzing linebacker and you're dealing with the bliss allowed allow back in your face. We know what we have to do is mono mono we gotta do that. We gotTA stop that. The second part is when I'm going out for pass route. I gotTA help my my left tackle right right tackle because as you know those two hands are coming and they don't come hard so I would tell my left tackle set inside for some outside that me get a shipowner's ribcage so I can slow him now and give you a chance to get your hands back on them. That's the way mark to an anti used to work on the airwaves of the same way if I'm going in between a lot Discriminates then it's the same lose inside. Let me bump them a little bit. DISA- slow him down. So I can add another one or two seconds for the quarterback they have time to throw the ball downfield when most of all three of them carried a Lo. You've got devolved. Twenty five thirty times go to eight handed off. Hand it off handed but you were one man show. As far as running the football. The forty eighty nine are doing it more of a running back by committee. How much harder is it for all those guys to try to get rid of the game by by coming in and out of the game the way that they do one thing about his own offense when when you have a zone running game at as I've seen in my past with Terrell Davis and you know all the guys that they had up running for hundreds and thousands of yards? Awards is that you could do that. These guys are trained to Ron Zone. Run and scheme and they do a very good job of doing. A lot of backs are very good at running on his own ski. I was never good running zone. Black zone run esteemed so but I was down here running so but these guys are very skilled at doing it very patient. They they set it up. Whether you fall inside Abou- sit outside. I'll make you wrong no matter what you try to do. And that's what these guys are doing that so I think for Far As vanished goes both for these teams to run a ball fairly well and they got very good backs and I'm I'm watching them. Learning a lot about 'em enough seeing them do their thing. They've both both teams are very have their skill view bets. We've been talking to so many players this week about the right things to do this week. especially if you're a player getting ready for the game we had some fun. We poke some fun at the forty niners. Who went out hard? I think Monday night. Nose Day nine listen. They said they didn't drink whatever they WANNA do. My question to you is just. What's the week like what would you wh- wh- you've been there a couple of times you've done it a couple times? What did you learn from the first time or the second time as a player getting ready for Sunday? Maybe that could help you go into. That was the absolute flu worse because nobody anxiety and all those things not knowing what to do and how to prepare not knowing if you actually doing the right thing not because you try to treat needed as normal year coach and say this is normal word. Noah's not nothing normal body because most people are planning for Super Bowl all excited and everything so not to mention you hear Miami. Hi Amy so you go out and party. I think he's just baked baked into that's normal. Living Your Third Super Bowl. Aw You guys you guys had some fun. The week leading up to it. What a Solo Monday through Wednesday party hard enjoy the hard times so every week is a curve every day for the cowboys won? One o'clock late at twelve one o'clock and then there's the week as we got the Thursday Friday and got closer and closer to like eleven o'clock and so right now teams are starting to tighten up the reigns. Guys should would probably stop drinking. START DRINKING A lot. More fluid star getting off. They feet star relaxed a little bit more zone in which you need to do without doing it too soon. Because you thinking about the game too much it wears you out emmy. Where's your you gonNA come out on the football field before Kiko completely wore out just doing Detroit distort warm-ups yep kind of balance it all and you playing multiple roles you understand that multiple super bowl? I gotTa have the experience of being Myers understand how to deal with your coach for the first two of those super bowls. Our colleague Fox obviously a couple of weeks ago really awesome moment home. It live on the air finds out. He gets long-overdue into the hall of fame. I know you've talked about it but I wanted to share with us. How that moment resonated with you with Jimmy Johnson in getting our so happy for Jimmy because Jimmy definitely deserves it? Even though I mean he had such an impact on the game early on and the impact on Dallas cowboys. And I turn around early on and to see him. Be awarded with this opportunity to become join players is that he has coach. Herb and myself. Aikman Haley Larry Allen and other great players that are all in coaches at all in the hall of claimed a wonderful thing and so I'm happy for my codes. He's one of the best coaches ever play for There's no comparison.

"Kansas City chiefs or other teams and I'm saying well can they stand up for four quarters. That's the big question in the way but to run the football demoralizes that defense. It's almost like Steph Cross headquarters shooting at three. There's nothing you can do is just talk about how the run game affects the the opposite side of the ball. The defense is beautiful thing about having a solid run game like the forty niners actually do have you can control the clock. You you control the clock. You keep Patrick. "Show Chris guys looking at which tight end travis. Kelsey the George Kittles can have a bigger impact in your mind in super bowl fifty four right now travis. Kelsey forty three percent George. biddle leads the way fifty seven percents kill didn't do a thing in the NFC champ again but the Needham now they didn't catch one until the fourth quarter when things were potentially just needing to be put away because Green Bay had made a little bit of a run to make it a score game that it's one of those things they can get off the field here. Perhaps there's something that could be made afoot right but Kit will just came across the middle and and it was one of those like wh. Where's that been all game? Oh yeah they didn't need it up until this very moment so you know but Kelsey is the guy that you know if you need to make sure that hills not beating you Kelsey can be doubled in hill can get double. Does that mean somebody else's GonNa do something that's why I think Damien Williams is so important and the number of times that you hear about Bob. This defensive line one thing that hasn't been hit yet and I'm you know imagine As we matriculate are way down our guest lists with people like Barry Sanders Zain Ladainian Tomlinson and Saquon. Barkley alone coming here on Wednesday show and then Mooch will be here on our Thursday show and he knows Andy Reid so well at screen game of Kansas City is so good it is so very good in the not just because of Mahomes and selling it they they can they can scheme it. They can hide it. They can make anything. Look like something other than screen and then hit you with a screen and in and they have several guys who they can use Indian screen. I know you can do it with Kelsey Damian Williams. We haven't even mentioned with Shawn McCoy who has hasn't seen much of a role the postseason but is well rested and knows Andy Reid Whitewell so if these guys on that gold crush line while you know start start pending their ears back going hunting. I mean what what better way to hit somebody then with the screen. Certainly if they're trying to hunt to make sure that Mahomes uh-huh can't stand back there and throw you know the deep ball and Celsius so good at that too I'm just wondering if if Damien Williams can run it and they requiring them to choose only one player if this is the way they can do it with a scheme and with the run game they have to choose only one player to double. You'd have hard to think it would be tyreek hill which opens up for sale C. N.. Kelsey I mean again. I don't I want to get too far ahead of this. You know where I'm standing on the subject of Mahomes I'm I am particularly keen on him and it's going to be very difficult for for me to not just throw myself full head over heels into the this is the mahomes moment but I've been saying that for a few days and I will continue to run this marathon not sprint in that direction just yet. "Would be worth it now. It's way down to the seven ten or seven ten split right into the pocket off Jerome Bettis here on the rich Eisen show all right so What do you think of the big bend? Come back right. You think you'd think so absolutely the no doubt about that. He's coming and then and now he's going to be part of this offense where these young receivers are going to be what I mean. It just seemed that we were missing that Juju. Smith Schuster had a A wasteland of a season because obviously you're quarterbacks back's going in and out he couldn't stay healthy what a dreadful season it was for him. So what about this team because it sure looks like the defense we are. We are all good attack in that particular. The one question mark. Obviously Juju didn't have a great year but I mean Washington came and developed. Like you want your second receiver To develop so now you bring Ben Back you you. He believes you've got a couple of receivers that are really good. They are they gonNA cover. Receivers is really good. You also have have found a couple of running backs that are pretty good. You don't necessarily have that one superstar Guy But you've got a couple of running back at a really good now. You bring Ben back to the equation. He's the catalyst but the biggest problem that the steelers had in the last five six seven years is that they didn't have a championship quality quality defense. Now you've got a championship quality defense in you. You saw what they did with no offense. They were on the cusp cusp of getting into the playoffs. If you bring a little more offense to the table which I think being can do not only are they in the playoffs. They have a chance to be really special in the playoffs. So I'm excited about this. Don't think what you're saying is anything out of the realm of possibility. I'm just wondering about the defense. So T. J. Watt obviously obviously took a major step. There's no doubt about that. The rest of the veteran presence Joe Hayden had a great season. Well who's the biggest addition. Do you think that defense that made it make a big leap. Would you say right there in the middle of the defense would you say is the guy that the steelers made a trade for the first time in the history of the steelers into the top ten draft to specifically say. This is the kid who is that kit that did fitzpatrick. NOPE NOPE nope make. A Fitzpatrick came from here in the middle of the season. I'm talking about the Guy Right there. In the middle of the captain of that Defense of the future name is Devin Bush and where did he go to school. Who who did you devin? Bush was just here in that chair yesterday. Photograph on the screen right there. So when all of a sudden done when you need when you need when you I need that helping hand to use that James Taylor phrase and you need that friend. Who Do you call on you? Call on a Michigan Wolverine and Devin Bush. Do you not sometimes uh-huh the phone is dead. You call and somebody just can't get it. Yeah can't get but I will acknowledge Devin Bush Got a chance to interview you him early on on other show that we both were part of the grind right grind and and got a chance to interview him in that game name and he was outstanding young man. I mean had a great time with them. We joked around about the Notre Dame Michigan thing but on a serious no no he. He developed from that from the first week of the season until the end of the year. Unbelievably well to the point where he was one. The big playmakers on that defense. So I gotTa give you some credit once..

Right if you're a really good golfer you last thing you WanNa do is rent golf clubs right. You say you know what rather than I go. I understand that that's relatable to me. But how is a bowling rolling ball. How's it different? Because it reacts to the lanes different you know the the balls that you have at the at the lanes are just regular plastic balls the balls that that I have. They react to the oil on the lanes and spend a lot of. Yeah you know this is what I do I do. How many how? Many how. Many three hundred I've got one three hundred one to ninety nine. The two seventy nine I did. I did pretty well but I had to make a decision my see my freshman year of high school. Yes was I going to continue to bowl or was I gonNA tribe football. Come on now. How can you not do both? I mean because you gotta be committed to one one and I didn't. Because usually you go here I turn here exposing posing the ball and he had a perfect shot hit me the ball bounce up in the air and luckily then saved the day for me but it it could have been a you. You know I hate to say you know another guy's name but a bill buckner type moment. Because had he had we lost that game that would have been the end of my career. And that's that's definitely all everything everybody would talk about. You wouldn't even be talking about that. You know what I might be a little more sensitive to it. If you fumbled and you guys didn't get to the Super Bowl you might. Yeah Yeah because I believe that. Yeah I've been around that terrible. No I'm close but not no I. I would have been sensitive to you. Know we start to look at running back Jerome. It's kind of hard to figure out what is great now because it's a different label to what is like Derrick Henry. Twenty years ago fifteen years ago. That's what the NFL was and we brought back old school. A little. The titans but I don't know will we see A. Is that the new thing. Possibly that the running back is going to be that big physical back or is there just only one on Derrick Henry. I think what you want to see is teams figuring out what they have at quarterback and I think what you have at quarterback is going to determine what you need at running back. If you've got a really outstanding quarterback I e Patrick Mahomes then no. You're not going to invest I in that running back because the odds of you running. You know four times a game very slim right so you. You'RE GONNA put a make the investment vestment in the receivers around your quarterback. If you don't have that superstar quarterback the now you have to think about how are we going to be successful breath in the NFL. Because it's not impossible. And I think the Tennessee. Titans proved at any age. You can still run the football and win football games. So I think the quarterback position determines because it Tennessee had a really good quarterback. Henry wouldn't have had the opportunity to run the football. The only only reason he ran the football so much this year because the quarterback situation deteriorated to the point. Where they said we're going to give you thirty carries because we're not sure sure if we want to throw the football thirty times and they saw they had a star in in Henry and they said okay? We're going to keep it going but then comes uh-huh decision at quarterback now if you go out and try to go get a you know expensive quarterback or if you keep tenny hill then you wanna WanNa keep running back if you go out and try to trade for a star quarterback than I think. You're going to let the running back go but if the titans would bring in Tom Brady are are you keeping Derrick Henry yes because one you WANNA help. Tom Thought about forty times right. But you know when he does throw he's GonNa be accurate passer. Make the right decision and you may be able to prolong his career. Maybe a year or two. Because you're gonNA give the bulk of the work the running back. I know that you told me this story. I hope you didn't tell it to me in confidence but if you did it's no longer in confidence you told me about the Super Bowl Ben Rothlisberger first super bowl and how the moment you get ready for the moment but the moment was too big for him like you guys. The veterans were kind of calming calming him. Down in the huddle what you remember about that. It was it was one of those he wanted to win the game. You know what I mean. There's not that's not uncommon you. We saw what happened. Baltimore's same situation. You had a quarterback who's having the MVP year and he wanted to win the game and and and there was some times in Baltimore Ravens playoff game where the quarterback probably should give the ball to the running back but instead he he wanted to keep it because he wanted to have a bigger impact in a game. That's that's normal for a young quarterback in here young in this Super Bowl Mike that moment but but but these guys are me being with the second year early quarterback yeah so And you know in Baltimore more. Obviously you've got a second quarterback so as you get older you realize that the moment is not as big and and thebenz credit. Did he settled down in that game. But you know the game tune. It wasn't so much me talking to him as much as he was allowing the game to to happen. You know what I mean when you when you go out there and things are going away. You have to kind of reassess everything and we had a veteran team so everybody was got on the same page and we were fine. Yeah it's just you know that moment where guys throw up before the Super Bowl. Yeah did you know I didn't. It wasn't my hometown. I was excited. This is a big moment but you gotta remember too. I was the hours e and the wrapping paper so to speak because I wasn't doing the heavy lifting running the football and I was the quarterback so I was the wrapping paper that you tear off and you you get to the hit stuff our worst game. Starting you tear me off the end of that when when Myron cope the legendary broadcaster. I called you the bus. What did you think of that nickname? So so the story. They heard me be called the bus. We went up to Wisconsin. And one of the coaches Wisconsin was at Notre Dame and his brother was tied on my team and long story short. I'm in the lobby in. He says hey. A bussey doing coaches former coach lane. And then Bill Hillgrove and Marco we heard him say it and then that next preseason game we replaying Wisconsin and gives Green Bay. He said he kind of looks like a boss. That's talk and the rest is history before well. When Notre Dame had two nicknames? I had I had the bus but also had big daddy bigotry quick as a caddy. That's why they call it. It sounds like something. No it was the officer line. The legendary offense Lineman Joe Moore. Who was who had coached on his guys at Pitney was at Notre Dame he he came up with that that low the biggest truck quick as a caddy? That's why I call them big daddy dion downstairs in the green room marching. Did he ever tackle you. He made some really good business decisions. But I'll tell you and that's his term. He came up with that term But when he would do he was so good he was so fast that he will go by and he would just be which was which is the best way to do it. Well there's speed and then there's there's world like Tyreek Hill you look at him and you go. He's faster than than everybody. Yes right dion on had that he had that kind of speed where he was just fascinating. Everybody he's told he always tells the story about when he was trying to tackle bow and he was a freshman. I think for the state. And he said Bo Jackson baptized him. He did that hand on the forehead. I leave on the grounds. How's that happens on my favorite story? You're you had surgery spine. Surgery and new is the the company that you're working with. Explain what happened in how they've helped you've come to so after retired and we talked about it. I mean I was starting to get really a beat up and I think that was partially why you stay with me in that run that we had. Because I was paying and dillon with some issues I am and they got progressively worse. I started to play golf and I thought that I was okay. But I really wasn't in and then having kids playing with the kids. My quality quality of life started to deteriorate really quickly so I started to do some research because I knew I needed a fusion for my back and I started. I found the right surgery surgery which was called exit surgery and then I needed to find the right surgeon found the right surgeon. Dr My name Dr Ebay. He was world.

"Because i knew i was you know i was a backup i will be playing 20 25 plays a game but i wanted those guys not to have to deal with it so i took on all of uh that the media interviews all that because for me i was thirteen years in there wasn't a question i couldn't answer and i didn't have a problem with anything saw it it was fined for me so actually worked out in our fame do you do you ever uh like sit back and just come marvel at the fact that you had the perfect story but you don't book ending to a career liang very few was john elway it will you i don't even know who else has like stray hand had a great worry hand yeah uh very few guys you get to walk away every payton one and walked away but the and in your hometown right that was the that was the one that is different from everybody else's is that you know all these guys one super bowl and walked away i want to super walked away and he was in my hometown which is right share uh in any case because a lot of times super bowl then come the most guys hometown in what it does it doesn't up emmys all the stars lined up uh for me in that particular situation so it was definitely a storybook in for mark room i was uh you know could have been more thrilled to have won the championship where i started my career how does jerome bettis due in today's nfl uh i don't think i have the same impact in today's in a failed because like i said i need a twenty five carries and already carries now i think in some instances if i play in pittsburgh i was still have same impac because they're still a still run the bar a live down had three hundred twenty one carries this year he got the ball so yeah if i was in a situation like that yes if i was ill on another team probably not because a lot of teams are have gone to pass first uh and.
