Remembering David Stern

"Longtime NBA. Commissioner David. Stern turn passed away on Wednesday after suffering brain hemorrhage he was seventy seven years old. Here's Jeremy Shop with remembrance of the man left an indelible mark on the sport of basketball ask ball in his thirty years as commissioner. David Stern made it possible for the NBA to scramble from the brink of bankruptcy and irrelevance to a position of global significance unthinkable in the dark days of the late nineteen seventy s and early nineteen eighties. The League was beset by drug problems. uh-huh teams were going bankrupt in the finals. Braun tape delay that stunning reversal of fortune is why stern will be remembered as perhaps the rapist leader of any sports league ever. Of course the League's rebirth can be attributed solely to stern savvy and toughness. It wasn't stern turn after all who fashioned from clay transcendent Larry Bird Magic Johnson rival rate. It wasn't stern imbued Michael Jordan with his gifts. Either but make no mistake. There might be no other sports executive ever who so deftly utilize the tools at his disposal. No other commissioner so clearly recognized recognized and exploited the resources of his sport with Stern in charge the NBA called itself fantastic but it was really a star factory the league marketed. It stars to the Hilt No league ever better mastered the art of Marketing Than David Stearns. Da at its inception seven years before the advent of the Internet not to mention twitter or instagram the slam dunk contest was a phenomenon. must see event created by stearns Lieutenant Edrich welts people too young to seem Jordan versus Dominique. In the heat of the competition can hardly fathom how big a deal it was then in nineteen ninety two. There was the Dream Team. Cyprus turns unique brand of basketball. Diplomacy and capitalism ah soon the entire planet would be turned into a marketplace for NBA TV rights. And eventually the jerseys players such as Lebron James Ten years after the first Dream Team won gold in Barcelona yao-ming was the top overall pick in the draft. This was not coincidence in in. Its own way. Yes arrival was a milestone in the same order of magnitude as the magic bird rivalry in the rise of Michael Jordan. There was a good reason why stern headed seat. On the Council on Foreign Relations in terms of his management style. Stern was not a man to be trifled with he could be intimidating demanding reading imperious. In fact all of the above but he can also be charming and refreshingly blunt and honest even on the subject of the Owners for whom he worked for example when the New York Knicks lost a court battle about sexual harassment in their front office demonstrates that they're not the model intelligent management of course under stern rain for so long. There were many challenges and controversies. Even as total revenue players salaries skyrocketed. There were too many lockouts. There was infamous Pacers Pistons Pistons Brawl in Detroit which exposed yawning disconnect in the relationship between players and fans. Tim Donigi veteran. NBA referee went to prison on gambling related charges but in the end David Stern will be remembered for all the ways in which he elevated the game enriching his his owners and the players popularizing the league and places where it had been virtually no he also helped create the WNBA and champion day. "Who so closely associated the subject that is Joe Frazier with your father's. Well who died seventeen years ago at the age of sixty nine after his great career? What did it mean to you on a personal level? And how did it connect you with your father again? Well, my dad as you say passed away in two thousand two and he's really never far from my thoughts. You know, we, we were very close and admired him tremendously and his, his work, and, you know, I just never dreamed that I would be doing a book on Joe Frazier. I figured that was his that was his, you know area of expertise and his territory. And you know, editors over the years at asked me to write about Joe, they live. They knew that I lived in Philadelphia. In fact, the book editor in two thousand eight asked me to consider a biography of Joe and I rejected it at the time, but, you know, it was I was sitting in my office about, I don't know four or five years. After Joe died two thousand six two thousand sixteen. I guess it was and I just got the thinking that, you know, if somebody writes, his book, ten years from now, everybody that knew Joe is going to be virtually gone. And they'll have the write the book, they'll have to write the book from clips, you know, and sort of piece it together and not having any first-hand knowledge in, and as soon as I thought of that, you know, I became flooded with chills, I felt like there was it was some sort of cosmic traffic light. That was turning from red degreen, and I just had a sense that my father's spirit was with me, and I'm as I'm talking to you. Now, I have these same chills. I just feel like you know. He just, you know, it was with me every step of the way with this as I said, it's, it's a terrific testament, not only not only to Joe but a dad's legacy as well. If I may say, Mark ram juniors new. "Be a a bad. Call. And of course, everybody knows your father, Bob, the hall of fame coach from Saint Anthony now that you guys are separated by basically, the full continent meeting you and your brother and your dad who are the east coast you dad's now retired. How do you guys communicate with each other about what's going on with your program is it you can't be in the same place reacting at the same time? But what's it like? Yeah. I mean, we do we have so much the same mannerisms, you know, even even my players they were kinda like creeped out like when Dan was in Dayton in a new you was great to come out. And and and give up some time that he needed to recruiting to to see our Saint John's game, and they not only his physical appearance just how he walks how he talks and the whole thing. Like our players got a chance to meet him a couple of guys on the floor after game. And they they commented to me like, wow, I can't believe like he's just like you talks. Like you like you. It's crazy but on. Yeah. We talked down. I talk all the time about our programs and just really everything, you know, we we would probably be five or six days a week that there were on the phone downton ID is off about a program things. Relative to what we're doing and Dan's more in a situation. I was in like my first two years where you know, you kind of venting about issues and things he's got to change because you know, he's gonna turn that program around at uconn. I have no doubt about it. It's gonna be it's gonna be a special place like it was many years ago in the near future. Is it a pleasure, Bobby? It always is speaking with you. "You know, in a lot of ways boat was almost a one and done before one and done existed. He was always on the cutting edge in out front. And and that's you know, I had never thought of it that way, but there's a lot of truth to that. You know, the kinds of of great players he recruited would into today's world probably be one in Duns. And and the the fact that both kind of said, you know, his message was he L always wanted to be out front, and who knows so L L, maybe all for it. I wouldn't understand the first thing about assembling building in east sports program. I know that you're learning about it. Now, what kind of where do you find a coach for east Ford's team? Is it a team that? Needs a coach. Yes, it is a team that needs to coach and when you asked about scholarships. That's that's where I had started to go, you know, before deciding on on how many and who they go to and how we recruit them step. One really is getting a coach board who does understand gaming and does understand the nuances of it and can in all honesty, educate us as to how to go about that. And and you know, what kind of level of support is needed from scholarship standpoint, we do know that we've got to build an e arena. Now, you know, that's not a ten thousand C building. But it is a place where our team can practice on state of the art computer equipment. And also be watched that that's the thing that's striking to me is how many people actually want to watch high end east sports players play the games. I that's mind boggling to me. But it's real. Yes. So how big arena would we be talking about now? Well, in our case, we'd be talking probably fifteen to twenty computer stations. And then. And then space around them for people to in essence, look over their shoulders and watch them play. Now, you know, the other beauty of this is it's all online. So a lot of the viewers are actually watching online. Although again when championships are held at the garden. They sell it out for two three nights in a row to mazing. I should probably know this, but Arthur or their TV contracts for collegiate east sports gaming already not not on the collegiate side at all. There is a website called twitch, which is where most of e gaming lives online that they and that's barely. Yeah. And that's and that's the site that most people go to to view it. And and I don't know what you know there. They're certainly could be TV contracts at the professional level. I'm not aware of any yet at the college level will it's a brave new world, of course. And we joined by Bill show. He's the AD at Marquette, which is creating a D one probably scholarship. Level e gaming program. It's fascinating to me the way these things are going up. Thank you for discussing it with us Bill. We hope to check in with you in the future and see how things are going. Absolutely. Jeremy thanks again for your time. So he's a beat safety officer and he stole an umbrella from the from the beach? No, no. Now from beach from a woman's car, she wanted me car at a restaurant at a bar. She was at a bar. She had her beach umbrella. You know, a lot of us do our beaches right there, right? He decides to steal one instead of, oh, I don't know, borrow one from his place of work because he doesn't have any access to any beach gear. Right. I'm sure. And he's also not at all aware of the law? No, not at all. We had. This is a different story. Okay. We had a woman in new Smyrna beach. "Connect with young new viewers in new sports fans in the exact same way that sportscenter on linear television used to or still does for people whose main way of consuming content, what they're used to is linear television. The way we do things a little bit different because we're just trying to reach those kids. But really it's the same. It is the same show even though it's so different. Does that make sense to a Luddite like myself troglodyte. From the from the drastic period. Katie Nolan is the host of sportscenter Snapchat in she is the host of the forthcoming always late with Katie Nolan. What's that? Could be all about what a great question. We're in the process of developing it right now. But really, it's just going to be a late night show for sports. Even though you know, you'll be able to watch it whenever you feel like, because that's how people consume content now and they have free time, whatever that is, they go and find it and watch it. So we wanna have show where we can ask, you know, we can put athletes and situations where there were asking them questions that will catch them off guard that aren't in the normal. You know, tell us about what happened on fourth down and that last game like something where they're feeling like, wait, what is this? I'm confused. We wanna have a base where celebrities that love sports can come talk about their love of sports too. To sports fans, and we just wanna have fun, and you know, dive in on topics and things that that interest me that interest the awesome staff that we have just kind of it's a weekly show. So we have the ability to kind of look back at the week and look forward up the weeks to come and just sorta help people digested cause so much information out there right now, this will hopefully be nice wrap up show that will be, I think, perfectly complementary to the amazing lineup of shows that we have across linear ESPN any SPN to this will be kind of like the compliment, like the desert that you have at the end like, okay, I've consumed content all week reminds me of what I saw and then tell me what I'm going to see next week. So that's our goal. Desert Keady noon. It's been a pleasure. Thank you for joining us. She's the host of the sports question Mark podcast. "How far does it stray from the real man will talk to really know the real guy, but you know, I'm gonna story and I look for evidence, and I think the evidence of this guy who couldn't control his impulses is pretty scant. You know, compared to athletes today route really didn't party that much. There's evidence that he really didn't drink that much. You know, all of these stories about Ruth out of control. And incidentally, there's always this kind of underground thing that Ruth is maybe a black guy passing for white. You know, this is a very popular rumor among African Americans. Not true, but it was something floating around and I think you know, all of these images of Ruth are also the stereotypes applied to minorities during this time. You know, and there was a subtle effort among sportswriters to kind of point this out, calling him the big babboons and things like that. So I think a lot of this stuff dehumanizing him precisely precisely. A lot of this stuff was baseball's attempt to sort of diminish Ruth. And of course that played well during salary negotiations, right? Why give a big salary to a guy who wasn't in control of ZIM pulses and would go out and waste the money at the track. So Ruth was up against all of that, and he didn't have a PR machine at his disposal the way major league baseball that we're the way that athletes would today.
