"When when you're out there, it's like nothing happens. The one thing that I'm loving seeing, And this is what I talked about when the when the power play was not being successful is the motion and I, actually, honestly I was watching Columbus's powerfully. And they got stagnant on the half ports. And it's it's an easy kill. But when you saw Patrick Kane one side of the ice to the other, the movement between Duncan Keith, you know, setting up Kubelik. You've got some good motion down low with Sean Strom. Moving in from the front of the net. Harry ordered another slot from the middle of the ice to the side of the ice to be available. Lots of good movement and that's what you need, and it was not a buzzkill. They had lots of opportunities in the first power play. They had five chances and they were really good. Unfortunately, they didn't score. But you're not going to be too disappointed because sometimes you're just not going to score. But it's the processes as you look forward to how you need to play to be successful in the long run, and right now you're seeing some really good moment at movement, and I think that the guys out there and especially, you know you have to focus on Patrick Kane. I think he's kind of excited. What's going on. If people feel that he's excited about what's going on here, said I liked the options. You know, Alex to break its Not there. Well, we got some different hands in there, and we're having some different looks that I You know for for for a team that comes into this season, where there's a lot of people looking and pointing fingers, I think they've done an excellent job to be where they are right now, and they're being very competitive and they're putting themselves in a position that they could concern Selves in tow. A postseason berth, You know, but let's take a quick break here in the postgame show. We're waiting for Jeremy Carlton to speak with the general media. But while we have a chance now, while he's still doing a particular interview with NBC Sports car Let's take our first break and come back in here from that coach After this black Hawks win, 31 you listen to the Blackhawks postgame show on 7 20, WGN..

"Off the clock. The Blackhawks will take a two to nothing lead into the dressing rooms after 40 minutes, shots on goal favoring the wings. Now, after 2 22 to 17 shot 12 to 5 in that period by the Red Wings, they pick up the only goal on Calvin don slap shot from the point. His first of the season. But I think the Blackhawks five on five that a pretty decent job where they ran into problems was on the penalty killed and then trying to straighten things out on the next shift or two after that, so stay out of the penalty box here in the third period. If you're the referees, you look at the Miss Call on Sidorov, who wasn't very happy there. Patrick Kane certainly voiced his displeasure on catching a little bit of a high stick to the chin and he got an unsportsmanlike conduct. So Blackhawks a little bit sloppy and what they were doing his father's taking minor penalties. But that's my only complaint of that period. I thought there was some really good things. Happening, and congratulations to Ian Mitchell picking up his first ever point in the NHL on the Don goals, So some good things happening for the Blackhawks through 40 minutes. It seems like everybody in the black oxide is engaged to a great degree so far here to you, and you know if you look at what's been going on around the league, I mean in Columbus in particular you got Disgruntled forward there appear Luke to blind. You know there's distractions there, but benching and stuff. You look at the numbers in this game other than the guy's getting some minutes taken away because the penalty kill if you're not on that. Jeremy Carlton has been able to use all four lions because everybody is involved in the equation. I haven't seen anybody you know, make some bad plays or lack of effort. So you wanted a good solid 60 minute effort here on on home ice at the United Center Up to this point, you pretty much got it from everybody. So far so good. The Hawks to the wings. No score after two Chris Bonus standing mind Black Cock Central, and he'll have a full intermission report. In third period. Action will soon ensue and we'll find out if the Blackhawks can hold onto this lead and register their first win on this young season. We'll find it all out in a little while. After two to nothing. Hawks This is Blackhawks hockey on 7 20 w GM. If you've got an insurance question, you could talk to a park ranger. "And you don't you know you don't have any Heavy hitters wherever you could still find a way to win games by, you know, while pitching and out defending I I like it. You're gonna count on your need your big guys like you. You mean you're going to need Caner could be All world as we've seen him, But you know he's going to need some help. So you know, look at you know, can they win game 65. Probably not. Um, but you're right. PB. I think you're certainly going in the in the direction. Um For them to to win some games and to build some confidence and have some success again. What's that definition? You know? Only the Blackhawks, can you? No can answer that with all the moves that they've made, But you're right. I mean, a guy like Nikita's. The Darfur is like a mini It's like he's about 7 Ft. 15, and he's about £400 and a wingspan of about 400 ft. In the big body. I know he hasn't skated. The last couple of days, which you know, obviously isn't a good thing during training camp when you're gonna be playing on Wednesday. I'm not sure if you skating today or not, but Um Him. You mentioned a guy like Lucas, you know? Well, Mark and in Matea, she and Mark I thought they were going to bring in Marky Mark. That's Phoebe was that you're gonna save that for Wednesday night. You know what the hell I'll drop it. I will drop it early on the show here on ESPN 1000, but Um, you know, you're you know, you're right. You gotta you gotta put the knows that a grindstone and just understand you know who you are. And figure it out. But again, it does come down to playing without the pocket. The defending aspect of it and look at the team has talked a lot about it. I mean, last year's No, without the park. I mean, it wasn't pretty at times in their own zone, but they do have some different guys on the back and you got some young players coming in, and now you get a chance to watch and evaluate him and it'll be like I said it would be interesting and fun to watch. In the power play wasn't pretty for the most part last season and so on. Here you go. Jeremy Carlton, saying that he wants to have two different looks to his two units and Kubelik and maybe start looking at Cain and strong and to break it, and Shaw and book Fist on the top end with Uh, you know, he said, that's more of a movement create mistake's passing lanes moving. And then the second unit's gonna be more of a shooting unit with Duncan Keith quarterbacking the likes of Kubelik and Wal Mart. Um, how does that work out and it's got to work out a lot better last year in your 28th and converting power play chances, And even though you were middle of the pack in the NHL in creating scoring chances you didn't finish. Yeah. I mean, the dynamic has changed a lot here because of the illness to Johnny and in Kirby, Doc Going down with the wrist injury. Uh, you know, playing over in the you know, I should play old thing. Going up in the in the world Junior. So I mean that that unit there last year that they had was going pretty good with dunk on the back end, and you had Kubelik out there and You know you had those other guys along with Caner and it looked at everything is going to go through Patrick Game container should be getting that, you know, minute in 20 minutes, 30 of every power play and if he's got, you know, Sprinkle into that second unit. Certainly, you know, I mean, I would encourage that and want that. Um, but it is it. Z is built on a couple of different looks, but You know, at the end of the day, it's a 56 game schedule. And I think what's interesting? Even more so, MPB. We've talked about this over the years. When you break down and it might be me and in my experience of playing coaching a broadcasting knowledge that when you could have been an NHL normal season You got 20 games where you're gonna be lights out where it doesn't matter. You're just gonna you're gonna win because you're just going to be better than the other team and just over the course of the regular season, that's what's gonna happen. You're gonna have 20 games where you're going to be awful. I mean, look, I played 16 years like I felt like my legs were baggage claim every night. That's what's gonna happen like that. That's just you're gonna be awful. Like you're just not gonna You know, you're not going to be great. And you have a pretty good chance is the numbers will tell you. The analytic numbers will tell you that. You know you're gonna you're gonna lose some gain just because of injury or travel or You just fatigued. What separates the teams that make it the teams that don't really good teams in the average team, so those other 40 plus games Now here in a 56 game schedule. You can't be. 678 games under 500 the 1st 20 games Because if you are, you're done, you're toast. I mean that That's just The reality of it, so power play penalty kill. Playing without the park is going to be so important again. Everybody's on the same page. Nobody's that practice games out grab had some players on these rosters that have played some games. Because they were playing over and in different leagues across the pond so that they have had people that have You know, kind of gotten a looker, too. Here there, but the majority that's not the case. Everybody's on an even playing field, but No. You get a power play on you got guys going And look if if if whatever The units are if you think that, you know Player, you know, player Amazon that second unit, but he's going. You know what? He's got to get bumped up to that first unit. You know what? You're trying to win games. And you know you're you're trying to You know, keep the peace and piece it all together, so to speak. And, um it'll be interesting How the power play units, uh, play out, But I will say this right like I thought it now I should think there was a good stretch last year. Those five guys how they going, and they were moving around. I mean, they did it against that bits. And now look at me that sentence. No, they couldn't check their hat last year in the playoffs. I mean, they were awful defensively, that mean there's no other way to put it. I mean, they just were not very good. But prior to that again, we went a long stretch from March until Whenever we started playing an artist or September whenever it was in the bubble that Hawk power play, they had some camaraderie. You know again, things change injuries happen, and that's certainly the case right now, but I'm sure it's moving parts for for Jeremy, and you know, Bill they got some good options there, Whether it's 11 full unit heavy or, you know, you spread it out and see what happens. It's gonna be interesting Ride. It begins Wednesday night in Tampa. Who's gonna be your partner on NBC ascent on Wednesday. I will be with Johnny Force one, okay? Brian Boucher, So we're not sure where Bush will be. I don't know if he's gonna be inside the glass or you're gonna be inside the pope mobile it right. It brought that from Toronto and keep them keep them in case his own little in his own little bubble himself, But, yeah, that's That's the plan, but you know it is you guys know things change hourly, so the plan is to be done in Tampa. We'll see if they're any homes in the building on Wednesday, and if they have a banner raising, but no sands, I'm not sure plays off the lightning. But looking forward to seeing what the Hawks have starting on Monday. Whatever they might have a 50 50 contest because they're wiling fans in the stands right so looking at Yeah. Okay. I'll try to get myself away from the late daily double. It happened down some when I was waiting for that. And you're Brian probably wants a horse play for later today, but I'll let you text him that on. Thanks for joining us. I think I think five is live in the first race. The gulf stream. I love you guys. All right? Yeah. So great at the old check. You can hear him on NBC. And of course, NBC Sports Chicago up next, the Hawk. "Back in there right from the start. So last night on NBC Sports Chicago You hear the old check and Pat Foley in the Hawks lose 43 over time, Brian and they're now down to O in the Siri's. Do They have a shot to extend this series? Or is this really Vegas? They're going to sweep the Hawks here. They might win a game this weekend, but I wouldn't bet on it. So there is a shock but no shocked with Siri's, obviously and they just they They were the last team in this modified tournament. For good reason because they still have a lot of issues and they run into a very deep team, a team with guys like Riley Murphy and Paul Stastny, who can score goals whenever they take a shot at the net. And it was good to see jump in their steps and guys having fun. It was an entertaining game last night, Chris no doubt and I was on with York and Jeff Miller the other day and I said, really want to meet like guys like Caner were frustrated with the attempt the game plan going into Game one. Where it was all about discipline and not jumping in not being playing fast and loose. They started playing fast and loose last night and was much more enjoyable. The watch. I think much more enjoyable for the team to play and you saw some good results now. Unfortunately, Jeremy Colleton made some you know. Put the lines in a blender and the defence of parents in a blender, and I was shocked that Bo quest was was a healthy scratch, apparently said just near the day's rest, we'll see what that means. But, you know Lucas Carlsson Young guy needs experience of playoffs, too, but focuses the guy you really want to get experience, But he and kind of Murphy were on the ice for the first goal of the game winner so and they had some breakdowns in communications. So Lot of wards there, but they gave it a pretty good shot. But when it comes to shots, 36 to 16 in attempts and 21 date and scoring chances that's not going to get done in the final 27. No, it won't and you're right in the second period. The offense did look like it was faster. And look, you know you have Doc Kubelik and Strom all getting goals in the second period. And then you get shut out in the third and really when you look at it, and the shot advantage to the gold Nice 39 to 25. You're not going to win these games going outside by that much, and especially with a team like the Gold Knights, who defensively they're able to clear the pocket away from Leonard and and you see a situation where Corey Crawford has to make 35 saves. He gives up four goals. Yeah. And Chris Here's the thing is I was trying Tio verbalize with the York and Jeff. I'd rather go out play my style of hockey again. Whatever experience you get in the playoffs for these younger guys in particular, and you want the corps guys to get another run at a Stanley Cup long shot odds or not. But you know, it seemed like Jeremy Carlton and staff came in with a game plan to just play to defend the goal night's game. You know, rather than to play their game and Yesterday. It seemed last night seemed like the Hawks were playing war their game and dictating at times. You know, Peter, divert the head coach of the Knight said. Yeah, you know, we almost fell in the trap. Write a letter also said, We always fall in the trap of playing the Hawks game too much, so I'd rather go out trying to play my game than trying not to lose. Do you want to see more from Patrick Kane? We'll hear from him next. You're.

"So the Blackhawks back working out today. First practice in what? Four months? Yeah, yeah, in August 1st is the day they need to keep him out with their best of five against Edmund. But reading some of the tweets out there by the Great Blackhawks reporters, including Mark Lazarus over Act, the athletic him and Scott Powers were tweeting about about regarding the goaltending situation. Mark Lazarus about 15 minutes ago, tweeted reading the tea leaves. So take this for what it's worth. But Jeremy Carlton did not sound like a guy who's expecting to have Cory Crawford available any time soon, he added. Stan Bowman Said this on the conference call today regarding Corey Crawford quote. The way we're handling. This is we're looking at the guys that were here and ready to play. And when quarries in that group Then we can talk about Cory. That's a tough one to speculate on. So your guess is if we are inspected, where, in the speculation businesses that that he may have found himself for the positive test? Is that what your conclusion? You know? I don't know if that's necessarily the case. Some people have tweeted that Him and his wife had another child. I believe back in April. Okay, so maybe it's his choice. Not wanting to be there. This could be like a kopeck situation. I'm not sure. Where a You know, so we're gonna have Patrick the one. I think the one thing that we probably Would all agree on wooden way that if Crawford is not available than there is no chance of a miracle, Well, that's that's what we were like saying that one of when you list the reasons why the Hawks could be a dangerous team. Lay off tested team a lot of time to get healthy and that we know that energy in these playoffs Siri's that the goaltender can can carry it for Siri's. You know all the way to a championship, and Corey Crawford is probably I would say. The most underrated portion of the Blackhawks dynasty in the 2nd 2 championships in being the main goaltender. Yeah, and certainly for anything you know if you're if you're asking for a miracle From this season, he would have to play a large role in it. I mean, like, you're not going to do the unthinkable without a Corey Crawford playing standing on his head. Would you agree? No, no. Eddie has always told us that Quark Crawford never got The kudos that he probably deserved through all this. You know, we always look a cane and tapes. Then we look at Sharpie. We look a Keith, we look. Att Seabrook. We look at Hosaka. Like they're a long list of guys that you, Khun go on about, but The guy that maybe you don't got the rain is Crawford? Yeah, when you mentioned Who did you see? Brooke Seabrook was on the ice for the first time in a long time, wasn't he said I got to get that You have got to get that money to write and signed into that crazy deal. Yeah, like based on Like what you said. The while of the, you know, Miracle idea of the Hawks winning The cup as a thief. First, you know, 24 seed are 22 What 24 teams in there. They're the last in the west of the last team to make it into their 12 seed in the West. If, if the after Cain like Corey Crawford's the one who you would have to lean on in my opinion, most heavily in orderto have that miracle. You know, we could pull this off. And so if he's not there, I mean I Colin Delia Malcolm Suban. I don't know. I'm not super optimistic, and it's a It's an Edmonton team that could score a lot of goals, right get their face. Yeah, I'm the pop powerhouse there Long and athletic. And if they get hot from three that they could make some, uh huh. But you know the Hawks to remember the other portion of this flip side. A lot of the Hawks fans are grab a gun in the number one pick where you have this player who's by far and away the number one overall pick in the draft, and if the Hawks lose Edmund Tin they have. What is it? 12.5 points 1.5% chance to get the number one pick in the lottery. Well, I would ask you as a Hawks fan. If you could choose right now that you could bounce them not knowing whether or not court Crawford would be available and just have a 12.5% chance that the At the number one pick, would you do it? A good poll question. We should throw that out. There is a poll question I would bet when Hawks fans hear that Crawford is not part of the situation. They would rather lose in the first round. Then get lucky in the first round and win. Lose that opportunity, right? If you if you get bounced in the second round when you're done right, you are correct. You only get to be in the lottery. If you lose in this playing around, so right now for you for your poll question right here. It's not a certainty that Corey Crawford is Not going to be available. But as things sit currently where it is up in the air with regard to Cory Crawford, would you be willing or would you rather the team basically just get done early and have a 12.5% chance of the number one overall pick or do you want to roll the dice and see if the miracles possible? That's like that's the bonus miracle, too, You said without Corey Crawford. If that's the case, right, because you have to assume that Crawford is still a question mark. There's no definite in or out. He's just a question, Mark. I mean, Am I a quitter? Ifyou like, based on the way that you've laid that out that I want the Hawks to be bounced? No, it's always the This is always the argument that I've gotten into with Bulls fans through the years is that Yes, you confined other players in different spots in the lottery. But when you talk about what's the greater good for the big picture that if you would add the front? Is that how you say it, Miller? Senior do this core? Yes. I mean, isn't that for the greater good? Well, especially for how they're how the team is comprised right with how the salaries are me, and you could use yourself a dynamite player making, you know very little to no money. Yes, they don't. Yeah, You don't have a lot of of of cash to spend on a difference making play. Granted, their biggest need is still on defense. But But you would take over. Everybody would take a winger who could beyond you know, difference making player at this state when Dave's is getting older Kane's getting older your cash strapped a little bit. Wouldn't give you the opportunity to to possibly package make a deal for a defenseman. That could be a difference maker. Yeah, I would think so. If you get gives you anything's possible you get you win that lottery, and that's a good percent 12.5% chance. Selling things like maybe there's a chance. We always said that with with Crawford as it is, in the way the Blackhawks were playing and McDonogh got fired and their coaches and that God That even even with this, like new life going in whole, even with Crawford, that would be a miracle did go on some sort of a run, right? And Alice and I'm with you. I'm the least accomplished Hawks fan in the group right now. But if you gave me the choice, I would say I'll take my chances with 12.5% versus them winning a cop it a miracle run with Cory Crawford status up in the air. What's going to be the shorter bandwagon? Is it going to be waddle hopping on the Blackhawks bandwagon for the five game series? Or is it going to be waddles? Ah, a short lived run on the Reds bandwagon when he thinks they're good, and then they're going to put down their legs. I think the Reds are have a chance to be better longer. So I think that bandwagon last a little bit longer, But like I get motion sickness, so I can't stand on any bandwagon for very long. You got that? You all you have to do is wear one Red jersey that I have to do. And you're good for both teams. Just wear a red shirt. Yeah, well, I have a Blackhawks jersey with my name on it, so I don't wear it, you know? Stuff. I do not have a reds jersey with I do have a Pete Rose jersey. But I don't and that I'm not wearing that. But I also blame you for the Hawks demise because didn't you lose your lucky Blackhawks T shirt like a few years back that you always used to wear and they would always win..

"Year two years ago, then getting married this summer. So I guess our family started to widen a little bit and. No, it's it's a lot of fun. We really close family in. Definitely he's upside. He's a he's a typical Philadelphia Flyers player. He's eighty points this year any OH L as a nineteen year old. He can hit he benefit the other night. So I think you know, flyers fans are gonna love him. I think I think it's getting needs to come of it. But I think now he's aware of that. And know, they said that about you know, Ryan I said that about me. So I think he just got gotta you got to work on it. But at the same time, you know, hopefully, hockey sensible, we'll bring him to the next level. And now there's no done like mine, I think he he loves the game too much. And he's he's seen hockey too much to to not to make. So I guess what confidence that one day is going to be there. So I heard you killed it the other night at Seabrook's bowling thing. Have you been a long time Caglar, I actually have not very good. I we played in New York when we were there for the team we had a team we'd have only thing with our team and nothing I shall like ninety five and then I get to this thing. And for whatever reason, I just kept going up there, you the crowd wasn't focusing on the bowling as much of my score. And I'm just throwing it down. I ask you five strikes. I've never got to enroll my life so strays day. But we had a lot of fun wants the money from Alex taken Dylan. His brother Ryan Strom scored his twelve th and thirteenth goals of the season tonight for the Rangers in their win over the devils. And we heard him talk about Matthew who was a fourth round pick of the flyers beckon the twenty seventeen draft here at the United Center in town. He continues to play at Hamilton of the OH L. And you hear Dylan say he is an up and comer a lot of people think he may have the most upside even though Ryan and Dylan were first round draft picks Matthew has himself eighty seventy nine points right now for Hamilton of the OH L just had turned twenty back in January. So hope you're able to enjoy that conversation. We had with Dylan Strom ahead of seeing his former team the Zona coyotes for the first time since being traded here time for another break. I'm kind of monitoring Twitter here to see if Jeremy Carlton had anything to say in his post-game comments. I haven't seen anything for the reporters out there yet in terms of Julius status because he would miss the rest. Of the game took awhile to get back up. Raquel was given a five minute boarding pal d as well as a game has gone back. "So second straight regulation. Here in the span of three days against other teams. They're battling it out for for the Western Conference. Wildcard the hardest working man in radio. Joe brand is back from the locker room after spending the weekend at normal Bloomington. Normal Bloomington, normal, working the girls state high school basketball championships here after this four three lauch head coach, Jeremy Carlton. Another game where you like together. But the result wasn't there. A lot of it like the last two periods in particular had didn't mind, you know, sort of the first five minutes. So the game think we had some good stretches. Had some opportunities in an answer point shots deflections whatnot. But then I think around like minute twelve. Twelve on the clock. Basically till he went up three nothing. We just kind of got away from what we need to have success. I thought we're playing slow turning the puck back and. You know, we just sorta we allowed them to sit with five guys and caused turnovers and puck. Coming up in the back of anada bunch of times which made it even though we played really well arrest the game. We're just uphill. Uphill game two three three. And then we get it to me man, five on three. And so that's just too deep a hole. Oh, I just think we we had them in there. And we had them hemmed in for long stretch of time. And no one wanted to change. And then everyone needs a change in the way back, and then there's confusion of the bench. I'm not going to point any fingers right now. We got to change earlier. You could have pulled war earlier. On power powerplay. I think if we'd had the top unit out there, maybe we would have done earlier. But now they just come off. And we don't want to do is be halfway through a change trying to pull them. So. Think we generated more than enough on the six on four on the five on four to score. Going to go into. Before choose. No, not at all. I think they've been pretty aggressive in the past two. You know, I just think it's situational. Sometimes you just can't get them older. Sometimes you don't don't like who who's on the ice. Or you know, you wanna make sure that you give your top guys a crack at it. I mean, if if we don't have our best sticks out there. And then we pull the goalie we get scored on that. I probably didn't. My job. So what do you take away from the weekend, you seem pleased with the performance? You get nothing out overall. I think tonight not as much just because we we put ourselves in a three zero hole. I don't care how well you play. It's going to be tough to to pull out of it against the team. That's there scratching Klein just like us. So overall, I think the games how they look good as they probably looked at some time or ever, but we gotta keep getting better. We're gonna keep improving and find a way to get paid off for it to talk to repeatedly throughout the time about resilience big picture and within each one of those holes now probably coming out of this week at the turn to the standings. Yeah. It's not think we would have liked standings, look different come out of the weekend. But it's probably not as ugly as it looked a month ago. So she's got to have a good road trip. Get some points. Thoughts points available. No one's gonna win every game. We win more than our fair share. We'll get in streak ending thoughts on that. He had a good run. He's. Been very important for us. She finds a way to produce every night. And you know, if you look at the game watch the game told me didn't get a point. You know, I probably he he was involved in all just didn't go in for for the guys. He's playing off. But. She'll start a new one next game stretch from twelve minutes to down three. Did you feel a lack energy there? I think replying slow China. We're we're impatient. We wanna score every time we had the puck. So we're gonna keep it..

"But in order for this to keep going effort is the first item of business. It's something that cannot be lost. When things start going. Well, I don't know if it was earlier in the season with so much effort as more of a confusion thing, but Jeremy took over as they tried to adapt system wise. The other interesting matter is that he wasn't afraid to let his feelings be known at this point. And it's easier to be heard now by these players went progress has been right. They've here recently. No question. There's no question that it's much easier to get your message across and again, you go back to Jeremy took over. There was just. Comfortable feeling around the teams, and they just, you know, players didn't like what was going on. And and this wasn't a reflection of Joel Quenneville is just the way. It was. They were losing. Nobody was happy and Jeremy came in. It didn't really change right off the bat. But I think the communication he remains very positive through some real tough times. I like certain things that I'm seeing. But he also called a state of state when Gustafsen was a healthy scratch. I need him to be better than in his own end of the ice. I mean, you know, he's what is your top offense defense. But you need everybody to buy into the to the program that he's selling. And I think that if you look at the great teams across the NHL, and then the history of the NHL there's always been a high level of buying very trots going into New York team. They had last year. They were the worst offensive team. They're the best defensive team one hundred percent buy in from everybody. Jeremy's getting that on a more and more consistent basis. This team knows that they just can't show up and win hockey games. Like, they couldn't be could before taxi had a a meet and greet with Patrick sharp this afternoon in any kind of talked about that he said. When we were playing in our heyday, we we knew we were gonna make the playoffs. We knew that these top five teams were who we had to worry about this middle group was, you know, so so and there were teams that we just were better than that has kind of gone away to a large degree. Yes. There's the elite teams in the NHL that are gonna make the playoffs right now. But but Chicago isn't in that now, and they had to find out what the identity of this team. And you're seeing more and more of an identity that Jeremy Carlton watch hard-working group of guys that are relentless and you're getting that from your top players to your youngest most inexperienced players, and that's what you need to move forward. That's what you need to build on our they're going to be bumps in the road. Absolutely. Who knows what's going to happen at the end of this game? But you have to have that belief inside the locker room and then excitement and belief as a group is much stronger now than it has been at any time this season and. Whatever message he felt needed to be sent to this team. Whether it follows through with the continued consistent play CNN, even even a young inexperienced coach so to speak. I mean, he's done enough coaching in a different levels different leagues. You can understand and see when maybe you got a little bit ahead of yourself. And that's one thing that you have to worry about with this young team getting ahead of themselves thinking, oh, you know, what this great. We're right back in the play. Everybody starting to Patterson. The back be careful, and that's what the message was. Jeremy was talking about. You know what? Yes, we're having fun out here. But we weren't crispy weren't sharp to focus wasn't what it needed to be just real the middle a little bit. And said, listen, we haven't done anything. We haven't accomplished anything. We're still under a sub five hundred team. We've got a long ways to go to even think about being a position that at the end of the season. We may be in the playoffs. He was raining a back in because you have to be curtail a little bit of that excitement and make sure your channel it into a.

"Career point streaks of ten plus games. Only the third player in hawks history to do that five career point streaks of ten plus games. The others were Denis Savard who at eleven of them and the five tonight tied him with Bobby Hall who had five for his career, Patrick Kane. The number three star the month for January, even though we had better numbers than the number one star of the month. Johnny Gujral of Calgary. The flames were a hot team. A number two star being Robin Lehner the islanders goalie who had a real strong six one and one month for New York. Okay. As we await post game reaction to come in from buffalo. We will get to that in a short amount of time because we will hear from Connor Murphy and Brandon Saad Patrick Kane along with head coach Jeremy Carlton wanna bring you a visit. We had with Derek king who is the head coach of the Rockford ice hogs. Now, the Jeremy was promoted on November six and will preface this by saying we're taking a look at the Blackhawks dot minor league team with the Rockford files. Sponsored by Finnity xfinity delivers the fastest. Internet with the best in home wifi experience. Call click or visit and extremely store today. Got him on the phone yesterday as the ice odds also returned from the AHL all-star break and conducted a practice over the beam. Oh, Harris Bank center, we touched on a number of topics in a number of individuals who have been up who have remained down in this Blackhawks system. So we're probably only bring about half of this interview here tonight, and we have a long pre-game show tomorrow. So we're going to split it up and bring the other half to you. And I'll tell you what we're gonna talk about. Then after we hear from this. And I started out our conversation with Derrick by asking him about approaching the three month Mark on the job. How he compare what he expected heading into what the experiences has turned out to be. And I have there been any unexpected challenges that he's faced. Like have been around long enough to watch other head coach run team. So watching Jeremy to come to know what was expected to like what's going to happen. But you'd never prepared for it. It's a bit of a grind just kind of authority guy or just trying to what players in and out of the lineup. And what have you done? It's it's not easy as an assistant. It's it's it's okay. Because guy sits over in talk to him after and Pat him on the back, Tom keep shut up a work with some guy. You're the guy ship or you're you're the guy not giving the guy at the ice Tyler taking them off the power player, and what have you? So sometimes they give you a little different look than they would an assistant. Well, you mentioned being around coaching coming up in the islanders system and joining them shortly after that four year Stanley Cup winning run what if any influence from Albert you carry with you today. Oh, I think a lot. I was fortunate enough. Not that guys are coming up nowadays. And having bad coaches fortunate enough to have so it's really well respected. Great coaches. Now Arbor as much as he drove me nuts. I I figured it out after I was retired. Why he was like that with me and with certain certain players entreated them a little different was he was a good communicator. He knew how to push buttons. We to get push my buttons. That's for sure. But you got the best outta me. And. Never really had a chance to thank for it. But I think he knew he wasn't like that. He didn't eat that. Thanks. But I think I look back and just that kind of way he communicated with this players. She was black and white. He was fair you told them how was told them what what they're doing wrong. And he did you know, he he he was definitely like that with me. But he also patted me on the back when I did good. So I kind of take that into my coaching. Jeremy got barely a year under his belt coaching here in North America. Before his promotion as someone eighteen years old. They're coaching with him last season. How ready do you feel? He was for his new job. Well, you know, what I don't think you're ever ready. I mean, if you asked cue that when he first started coaching or even Al Arbour when he first started coaching was probably never ready, but you learn you learn quick and you get comfortable quick. I was could he use another two three years in the minor? Sure anybody could. To hold it. But he was definitely going to be in any coach whether it was after year or after a couple of years. So like like, I said, you're never you think you prepare. But you're never really prepared until you get behind that bench and you start working and some guys that just quicker than others. But Jeremy, just smart hockey guys are smart guy. And I think he's done a great job. And he's he's pretty quick at adjusting. As we visit here of full disclosure to the listeners following your Thursday practice after the H L break Henry. Okay. How're you checked in after being assigned by the hawks earlier in the morning. I know for league rules. He wasn't allowed to practice get on the ice in this. But what was your initial impression on how he handled the hawks decision. I know Jeremy just got done speaking in buffalo, and he says he just want to put him in his many situations as possible because he's still valuable pieces. He was when they drafted him a couple of years ago. Oh, yeah. I just talked to him. And he was. Oh, no. Always counting with a wooden ball or whatever they do. And he's he's a pro. He's got a good head on his shoulders. Hey, nobody's happy about it. I've gone through it. That's what I told. My message to him that I've been through this where you get sent down, and you're you're bummed out. But you realize when you get down here. There's no time to sulk or no time to potable you're gonna play a lot of minutes. He's gonna play in key situations. He's going to be a big part of this team. It's a chance for him to just play a lot of hockey, relax. Not as much pressure and just go play and holding his game. And then eventually be back Danny child because he's definitely talent. From a distance scoring. His has been the biggest problem for the ice hogs this season. How much of that is the type of talent that's on the roster and how much of it has been either your underperforming are under executing to this point. Well, I think. You know, I don't think we have a bunch of snipers on our team. I think we have a lot a lot of guys with some talent. But a lot of guys that have to Greece oke goals and grind some growing internet. I think there's a couple of guys here that probably feel they've underachieved so far, but those guys right now, and I don't like to say names. But they know who they are they're they're starting to wake up and now they're starting to feel good about their game. And they're getting confidence back. It's funny. When you're when you supposed to score goals or your appoint guy and things are not going, right? You you tend to start squeezing that stick a little bit. And then you start over think plays or over thinks shooting the pocket instead of going the other way, and that's something I've learned over my career, and I just kinda relay that to them now. And then I think they're doing a lot better job. So I'm hoping to see three plus four goals every game which would be nice, and we'll see what we can do what ask you about a few individuals here. Anthony lewis. Lead Rockford in scoring last season. He's doing the same. So far this season though. I know I know Dylan secure is right there behind him with fewer games played as the game has trended smaller. What what's left for Anthony at a guy at five with seven to show that might get him promoted? Well, I think the biggest thing with him is consistency. Even though he's leading the team. I think at times, and I've talked to him about it. He knows him. He understands that. It's not three or four good games. And then couples bad games. He's gotta be real consistent where you might not be always great games. But he's having a lot of good games and steady. And in producing that way. I think the big thing for him. Now is just the skills their talents there. He's got a vision. It's sport just strength. And he's a small kid when he knows that. But he's actually got a little nastiness when he gets a little ticked off. So the big thing for him and even like the secures and these guys like that it's just a little stronger, a little struggle with your lakes and. Being able to grind for win battles like that. And if he can do that and be more consistent. I I don't see why he can't have a shop. Maybe at least a call up. Speaking of Dylan. Yeah, he's another guy whose whose body has to fill out or needs to have some feeling. I I know one thing the hawks wanted to see more of was a willingness to get to the middle of the ice play a two hundred foot game as he works on filling out that body which certainly helps in those situation. What has at least the willingness have you seen an improved willingness as the season has gone on for him to do that. Yeah. I think so definitely from the start of the year and just before like I had several meetings with video where you see him fighting through parks and winning them. And then times when you maybe could have had that loose puck, and he didn't wanna go into that gray area. And then finally Drake before he was called up. He was really. Puck since fighting to get pucks back, and he was he was doing all those little things. So I think that was great. And then when he came back down he he got great off to where he left us. And he's been doing a great job because I think he's made big strides with that talks when impact battles and getting into the middle of the ice and score a couple of goals there already. So it's good to see him that's Rockford ice hawks. Head coach Derek king. Former forty goal score in this league for the islanders. I think he had three other thirty goal seasons. And yeah, his first job as a head coach is an interim head coach right now. But here you have heard some of the thoughts on a few of the ice. Hogs players will continue that conversation in our game show tomorrow the puck drop tomorrow night in in Minnesota isn't until seven twenty we're on the air at six thirty. So we'll belong pre-game show. We'll bring you the rest of that conversation in which I asked him about Alexander fourteen and Victor eight cell. Blake Hillman the to go is Anton Forsberg and Kevin lacking. And also, whether some guys have really taken a step up, some some names that we may not be as familiar with who have gotten themselves into the call of conversation. If STAN Bowman should happen to need a body. That's a little less familiar to Blackhawks fans, then than we know right now. So we'll bring you the rest of that in our pre game show tomorrow. We'll tell you the ice hogs are in action right now against the Chicago wolves and they are leading four two late net game and Henry yoki. Are you has scored a goal in that context will bring you the final score and more details later on in our post game show for the here. "Now. No. Blackhawks radio. Chris Boden three straight wins. After a five game losing streak. The Blackhawks pick up their thirteenth wind under Jeremy Carlton and their thirteenth win in their last fourteen meetings against the Buffalo Sabres says they win this one tonight by final score of seven to three. Let's dive right in tonight's postgame lines as we take you up until ten o'clock here tonight. We'll get some post game reaction from this victory. I wonder if eighty eight is going to be part of that post game reaction I'm willing to to gamble on that one a little bit. But how said back to the key Bank center for a few minutes with Troy Murray, and Troy this one turned into a white knuckle or a bit in that third period. A good John to bring up in that first intermission right after it wrapped up wondering whether the legs would be there in the third period. They were certainly there in the second. But for a while the the second win and hats off to Cam ward because he he faced a ton of shots once again tonight that may be a bad thing. But in the end, he was the one who kind of guided them through until the offense could get going again they have to. Find a way to cut down the shots against they're asking too much for the goaltenders. But you gotta give credit to the buffalo. Sabres? They made a goaltender change after the second period, they really came out to Termine to start the third period. And boy they put a lot of pressure on the Blackhawks they closed to within one goal. And then a long range shot from Connor Murphy. I think took the window the sales of the Buffalo Sabres and then an empty net goal by by Kane. And then with just over half a minute to go Brandon Saad scores another won his second of the night. But the Blackhawks finished the game strong. But there was some anxious moments there without a couple of big saves by Cam ward things could have been different Cam Ward's been solid all season long now over the five hundred Mark on the year nine eight and four but an excellent job by Cam war. Nixon job way, the players to hang in there and find a way to to win this one. And then some real fun and excitement at the end of this game for Patrick Kane picking a four point camp took one off the noggin tonight. He also had his leg. Looked to be twisted. Looked really uncomfortable getting backed up, but apparently he's ok managed to stay in there and finish things off and. And how about Patrick I mean he was dangerous coming into this game. We were all wondering whether certain trends that had been seeing prior to this nine daybreak would carry over. But you figure he had be extra fired up as the always going back home. It probably has to be extra sweet. Because of the way the sabers were obviously trying to play against him early in this game, the sabers a little undisciplined playing against Patrick Kane. But obviously they had a game plan that they were gonna try and take take Patrick out of it. Well, didn't work they drew a couple of penalties to interference calls, and I liked the way that on both plays at a little late hits by the buffalo. Sabres was responded immediately by the Blackhawk players an excellent job by Seabrook on the second one at the tail end of the second period and then in the first period Jonathan Teves jumps in there as well. And gets a roughing call against the big defense for the Buffalo Sabres Ryssdal line in, but they did an excellent job in this one sticking together. And it really shows a lot that they were able to to hang tough in this one. Find a way to get some space. At the end of it, and then have some fun and in that first incident Jonathan tapes was quick to jump on restore land. And he drew a roughing penalty himself Drake Agila off to the side with another sabres play. Let's let's discuss could ULA. And you know, we we started seeing some of the benefits of having him on that line. When Jeremy Carlton decided to put him on the left side along with Dave's and Kane, and there were some opportunities. Maybe he was maybe he was a little too generous in his first couple of games in terms of giving up the puck. But he seemed a lot more aggressive tonight. And he certainly was paid for it. His game is biz being tenacious and relentless. And that's something to the Blackhawks were looking for in that trade bringing jeweler here, and then really having that determination great speed up front, and and being a player that likes to disrupt things and he's not going to back down. We saw him in that fight earlier on what he got here with the Blackhawks she's not afraid to mix it up not a big guy, but he competes hard, and that's what you're looking for. And I think he's been a real nice fit for Jonathan tapes and Patrick Kane. Three points in this game. Tonight. A go on a couple of SIS plus one had three shots on goal. So let's move right in its player with the most heart is going to be draped cajole. We just mentioned some of those numbers in sixteen and a half minutes. I thought he was really effective in this game, and it all areas and had a great opportunity to match Patrick Kane at the actually wouldn't have because Cain what had five points two goals and three assists with that late opportunity that you had the hallmark made his best save of of the third period on a Drake cajole. But transplant the most hurt is could up player with the most heart. Sponsored by mercy hospital, cardiovascular services, great call. There were definitely stretches in this game where the Blackhawks were trapped in their own end. They were scrambling in their own end. But then you you mentioned something that seem to really jump out in that second period was the way the Blackhawks eventually found a way to counterattack with the sabres. We're doing I thought that was great now. So you thought they did an outstanding job of crashing the nets night. We haven't always seen that as as consistently as we'd like to see. What the hawks this season. Now on a great example of Duncan Keith jumping up into the play at the right time taking a little feet in the neutral zone. And again that was a turnover by the Buffalo Sabres in the offensive zone. Quick turnaround by the Blackhawks Patrick Kane up to debrincat little touch pass and Duncan Keith jumps ahead. I mean, how many odd man rushes in this game to the Blackhawks have against the sabers? It was really a loose structure game by the sabres. And I know that Phil Housley is not going to be happy. The sabres are not going to be happy the way that they started. This lengthy homestand here that there really could make the difference between their make it or break it this year. So great job by the Blackhawks to take advantage. And then you could see that the the sabers feeling a little bit of pressure and pushing they know what this game meant to them. They could have closed the gap to within one point of the Columbus blue jackets in the wildcard spot, and they weren't able to do that. This is a big loss. But you could sense that they were there are pushing a little bit in the Blackhawks from smart plays in the buffalo. Sabres maybe a little bit too fancy at times trying to overpay. Pass a little bit. And when they did that they turned the park over on the Blackhawks able to quick counterattack and you're like Patrick Kane's goal that was a turnover and he gets a breakaway this first goal of the game. You know, that gave the Blackhawks that real good opportunity to feel good about themselves in this game. Because of the mistakes that the sabers were making. Yeah, the buffalo route certainly had an opportunity in the first fifteen minutes to jump on the Blackhawks quickly. And when they were doing that, except they they weren't able to light the lamp, and this isn't sabres postgame live by any means. But now that you've gotten a chance to look at this team the makeup of it. And you know as as greatest season Carter Hutton had for Saint Louis last season. I think Lena's ullmark is has been the better goaltender of the two here for the course of the season. But I think you're you're starting to see how some of these pieces are beginning to fit together the high draft choices that they have had in a couple of other moves that they've made even though Jeff Skinner will be a free agent this season. Whether he returns remains to be seen. But I think are you starting to see what what you know. Some wise drafting is at least start. To create their on that sabres team. Well, if you if you look at you know, where this team strength is. And it isn't that young core group of guys. Sam Reinhart was picked up with the second pick in two thousand fourteen Jack Eichel the second pick two thousand fifteen which means they weren't very good during those seasons. Crystalline and the big defenseman is going to be a mainstay. He's only twenty four years of age. He was the eighth overall pick and thirteen. So you're looking at thirteen fourteen and fifteen these bears are big pieces of the puzzle now, and you get the first overall pick last year razzmatazz dawn, he's going to be a great player Dolly. And he's going to be a great player. He's only eighteen years of age. And then he's got a lot of cheering to do. He's got to get stronger. He's got to get a lot of things, you know, as it moves forward. But they've got some good young forwards upfront Casey middle status. Another one in seventeen. So they've really got some good young pieces. What they're going to do with Skinner is a tough call. He's an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. He's making five point seven million this year. He's gonna get a big race. And twenty six years of age. He's still got a lot of good years left. So I mean, the Buffalo Sabres are going to have a tough decision. What to do with Skinner? Do. They want to pay him the big bucks that has numbers are going to say that he should be getting right now thirty one goals in the season. He was in second spot coming into tonight's action in goals scored this year. But you know, I'm not sold that you want to give him some huge. Money's had a great year and he fits in nicely Jack Eichel, but the pieces are starting to fall into place here for the Buffalo Sabres it may be a little bit. While before it gets into place Carter Hutton was brought in here to be the number one guy said so he's had some good stretches here but three nine and two in his last fourteen games in four more goals in his last four games. So some bad things. Also from Carter Hutton right now. She tries to regain some confidence. Probably going to be calling you to the bus. You're pretty soon. So one more for you before we cut you loose here. And appreciate you sticking around. Now that this first game is under the belt. You do open though with a back to back with. Traveling situation. The Blackhawks in better shape after this game physically coming out of the break after that long left..

"Has been able to be around more there and now able to to take a bigger role. And so that allowed us to to get Sheldon here, but I didn't know him for tournament in Rockford and after working with them for a year just first of all tremendous person. And cares. A lot of other team in the players with his got a varied background his playing career. Came probably came back way to the NHL and turned into former games and sound like often played in a bunch of different leagues. So that I think that experience and he's been to Europe to which I think is a positive it makes them really valuable and a lot of different ways of the king do many different things so nice album nice tour stop having a resource, adding a voice our together. Anyway, so, but he does have a different background than the rest of us. So that's that's perfect. That makes our staff deeper and. And better berry. Always been the plan that eventually hill move back to his previous role. He's been here to help with the transition helped me get accustomed to NHL level, and he's been great, but not a long term solution. But as far as number don't really have nothing sentenced on the buried that. Jeremy, of course, alluding to is berry Smith, the distinguished looking Blackhawks assisted four now who has lent a helping hand and will as you heard return to his previous role once things are settled here as for Brooke bake himself. We mentioned a twenty thirteen Cup winners kind of a seventh d here with the Blackhawks. He's thirty eight years old four years older than Jeremy Carlton who will turn thirty four in next week. And let's hear from the former Blackhawks defensemen. The former NHL veteran blue liner, Sheldon Brooklyn here. I'm looking forward to it. There's a lot of guys I know on the roster. The guys have worked with in Rockford. So I've had that level of familiarity with them. So I think that'll help him. Just I don't take one day at a time and getting getting my feet wet and get things going here. It's been hard as transition transition. Honestly, sometimes when guys are on the ice are acting up. You're just you don't have a hand in it anymore. You know, you get a little fired up.

"Play something that you have to do a better job putting art and better physicians make quick passes. I think that's the biggest thing for me. Yeah. You can't argue with too much with how Colin daily has performed here. So far with the Blackhawks Corey Crawford went down, by the way. Still no update in terms of where Corey Crawford isn't for his recovery from the concussion, but Troy is he takes the net. Again, there's been nothing brought success for this team so far, but it's great till know that he is still considering areas where there is still room for improvement. The twenty four year old from California knows he doesn't have all the answers. And there's still things to work on. I think that he's played extremely well. And obviously has numbers indicate that he's been tremendous to first stars of a third star a three games. It is played. It's a small slice of maybe what could be a real pick at good story for the Blackhawks in the absence of Corey Crawford. Jeremy Carlton has some great respect for them. They have a good relationship for what happened last year. So there's some comfort there between the coach of the goaltender. He just got a great attitude. He works extremely hard to put himself in a good position. Again, like Patrick Kane. Like all professionals eagerly seems like us even keel on everything. The goaltenders that you talk about he mentioned it. I don't let too many things rattle me. If one goes in I focus on what I gotta do. Next time. You know, there's gonna be a game wherever it is knock on wood. I hope it's not this. But at the same time there's gonna be a game where he's going to have such struggles. At all. That's what you have to find out. How tough you are mentally things are all along pretty good. You feel good. That's great. But all of a sudden what thank start maybe turn a little bit. You lose a little bit of your confidence. You get lit up one time. That's where you really see what kind of a goal tear. He could be at how he could respond quickly to the next game that he gets opportunity and before we roll into our next topic. Troy Cam ward has been so great in dealing with the situation here because Collins played really well, you'd expect Cam ward to take over the actor Corey Crawford. Unfortunately, suffered another concussion Cam really embracing the role as mentor, and Colin really appreciate that as well. Too. I think it's important to have that kind of a relationship between the goaltender the backup. Goaltender calls twenty four camps. Thirty four camp knows that his career is starting to wind down a little bit great years with the Carolina Hurricanes. He signed the one year deal here. He kind of understood that he was gonna come in here and be the backup to Corey Crawford. Thanks changed a little bit, Cory. What was hurt and call? There's come in here there is that your experience goaltender young, goaltender mentorship. That's going on right now. And I think Cam has appraised at I think it's a real good opportunity for him to put another feather has cap about how good his career has been and what type of person he is. I love the fact that Jerry call to start in the winter classic. And you certainly get let anybody down he was tremendous. And that game. He was the second star Bateson suspects. Spectacular sage in that game against the Bruins. I know that he chairs that moment for him and his family, and they'll never forget that opportunity to Jeremy gave. So I think there's a lot of respect for Cam ward for the head coach Jerry call to add Jeremy also has a ton of respect for calling where he is in his career trying to get himself to be a regular in the National Hockey League. Just like Cam was at a young age. Speaking of that winter classic.

"Me beating your carrots watching this game from a distance a little bit more than you're used to dig up. My my dad's binoculars they're here with me on the trip there a little bit big. But I'm gonna use them if need be, but actually it's a great vantage point at Notre Dame stadium. I added chance to step up there in the booth earlier today to catch it in and it's going to be fabulous. Hopefully, you're ready to go. You're you're dressed appropriately. Hopefully, you enjoy the game all the best of the Blackhawk fans in two thousand nine hundred I felt his advice. I think so far I am dressed appropriately. And having fun down here. Dissipation of puck drop. We mentioned those great that were being introduced a short time ago. Once again, they were introduced to the crowd to vary allowed roars the coaching staff has made their way to their respective benches. The Blackhawks coaching staff led by Jeremy Carlton, and those extremely sharp black and white varsity jackets with with the white leather arms and the black. Regular part of the jacket kind of in sync with the uniforms at the Blackhawks are wearing the Bruins doing the same. And after stepping actually outside the stadium. The north end of the stadium and doing a bit of a circle to the path in which touchdown Jesus was behind them. The Blackhawks and the Boston Bruins have made their way now into the stadium both by the same tunnel. The football teams do here during the regular college football season. You hear the song that's playing in the background a Blackhawks in their real sharp black and white winter classic jerseys. The Boston Bruins at the same much black and gold and white, but a Brown and in white for this, particular instance, getting their escape cards off as they walk behind me right here and getting ready to take the ice and get themselves set for the puck drop of the twenty nine team Bridgestone NHL.
