"Japan is knocking beautiful and i loved it so much. It captured so much of like what inspired stars in the first place. Because george lucas talked about loving all those movies. It's sort of this amazing full circle journey and every episode is so like different and really captures different. I don't know ten again about automate styles. But like there's the crazy like pop music but the big buggy is then. There's like the super dark like almost gothic horror. And there's the super impressionist except it's sort of hints at this range for automated. I think a lot of people including myself don't always know about and i love that they did that. The one thing. This is my criticism. Is that every. Episode is basically like jet jed eye versus steph and might neighbors. And you're like why couldn't we have told stories just in the pocket of the universe that we're not about sort of say diametric good versus evil like there's like i don't know there's so much shades of gray in the style and i think in the tradition of automated and it's like i wish they'd dislike. Let go of some of that. The good thing about it is they're very few characters from the movies that are mentioned. Like there's like so it's really like all new characters. A lot of them do feel like these pilots that somebody tried to do for like another story. Ever hooks is gonna be really pleasantly surprised by this. that's awesome. yeah. I want to go back to your thing that you're talk about just 'cause i just looked her up. She is super waie. She directed the sun is also a star and before i fall which are both based on way novels. The director of big arguments. She also directed the first two episodes of that amazon thing. That sucked me panic. Jack nicholson sun and everything. So yeah very interested. Apparently it looks like nuclear families. Only going to have three episodes giles. Also love short. No i love that too. But it's gonna fuck you up to this the last one's gonna episodes gonna fuck you up fascinated by that super a fanny callback. I watched kid ninety. That's the kind of week it's been of why. Even though i kept being like. I'm gonna watch ninety. You were like don't do it. I just fall out of your head. I found this. Like more compelling than i thought i would i sort of liked soleil moon frye as a character. This is the punk for refresher this the punky brewster in the nineties which mostly my question was how does she still have so much cachet. Ninety wasn't wasn't doing anything. But i guess you just sitting on that syndicated money. I didn't realize punky brewster lasted for like four or five years in my head. I was like that was like a one like season. Show hoop and i actually did. Go back and watch a couple of punky brewster episodes at the tone. Sorry oh it's so weird. And so bad. There's a reboot which. I had no idea but i mostly enjoyed this just to see jenny. Lewis favorite thing is when i was talking about a car making the best jokes about having guns and we'd or whatever. She seemed to religious hand. Shift jenny lewis was a mad. I should've i for now. I probably didn't because i forget singers. So like who. is that. like as heather mccomb. I don't know who you are daniel. A lot of those people just act out by the charlie sheen things the charlie sheen shit was terrible but i found it moving like i don't know just kind of she's clearly somebody who wanted to be an artist and filmmaker..

"About the technology when a pivot a little bit in the voice industry in general yup bixby podcasts. Someone ask you a question so the big marketplace it's available for phones that their helpers can build a well we call capsules phones and you can differ watches as well and you can build for. Tv's and smart speakers right now but there's not a marketplace yet so these coming to lot of new devices. i'm curious. What device are you most excited about the big cities coming to that voices coming to in general. That will unleash something new yet. So i i think that ties into sort of the voices. My os thing. Where it's such a natural way to interact. I think of devices that have really horrible user interface and how voice can make a difference on that and samsung being the the manufacture of so many different appliances. I think there's a real opportunity for bixby. There you think about the the appliances around my home have terrible user interfaces. It's things like the washing machine. Which has like our many settings or the dishwasher with my dishwasher has ten different buttons. And all you ever do is push clean. And why can't i talk to that or talk to my washing machine. And say here's a white load or this is made out of this or whatever like just take it from me and don't make me study the manual to figure out what setting it should be on so i'm not shrinking my clothes or that sort of stuff. I think that's where samsung could potentially make a big difference because you've got all these all these appliances built in the thing that i'm really interested in and editor if you jenny lewis roger. That's a question that i haven't i sort of blew this earlier but as a content creator like i'm always interested in how these voice technologies are going to evolve to become to communication And so. I haven't really seen anything yet that i would That allows me to interact with somebody. Seamlessly frustrating comes to mind on talking to 'em giving message whenever that is whatever the content is and i want to ask a question. And i want real time feedback right there or captures that that would be pretty cool and so i'm still looking for whoever can do that. Because that would be exciting to me. I so agree with you when certain mashing buttons. That's human to go. You gotta put you think money buttons. You've got to get something done. And you're like i just it's so simple. I could describe it once. I got a mass opportunity there so absolutely wherever really gets that right is going to do..

"With jenny lewis welcome hello i'm not sure i can count four or five gosh i'm not i'm more of a words guy all right numbers gal i kinda girl on your liner notes it says about the song on the line this is an important song for me how so well it set the tone for the record and finding an album for me it begins with songs and i don't often know what the theme is until i get to the end so this was one of the later tracks that i wrote and it's sort of encapsulated the vibe so where and when did you write this record over what period of time i wrote it over three or four year period i had just gotten out of a twelve year relationship living in los angeles and i left for new york and stated a friend's apartment in the east village like a five floor walk up and just kind of began the process walking up and down the stairs we know that you've got a lot of thoughts walking up and down stairs yeah no i'm serious like the idea of going from the street to where you're gonna spend the rest of your time you can have sort of when you process stuff in the movement is conducive to like you know dislodging the ideas and there's so much input in new york i would just put on my headphones and just crews are you someone who keeps a notepad and then scribbles down things that come to you or do you need to just sit and really sort of focus on something like this is my working time i am a voice notes addict and i have i have thousands of little fragments of ideas and then i'll find a little strip of paper i've been i've been known as the the barf bag poet because on the airplane that's what for some reason i always get ideas and i just i'm like where's the closest piece of paper that i can scribble something down on that it's it's everybody knows exactly what you mean what you said that the var fag poet you gotta write note you gotta get when you're in the moment or else it can just fly can float away from you but sometimes if it's good enough then you remember it if you don't get it down and i'm always kind of carving words in my mind you know kind of working on the story and editing and forever revising does album does track order make a difference to you as you're putting together oh yeah oh absolutely it's so important in well i really care about the album form the l._p. is important to me and right now and maybe in the future you know put out a bunch of singles which is also exciting not having to link things together but in this form the order is something that i i mean it drives me crazy i i actually sent this record when it was done to my friend and gabbard lou i play in the postal service with i sent him all of my soul solo albums and i have him put it in an order for me oh why is he a curator he's just good at everything and we've been friends for twenty years and he he can be there's an object tippety there Can be objective, but he knows you well, but he knows me well, and I don't always follow it, but it helps me kind of come to. my guess is jenny lewis we're talking about her process and her new album on the line this lot of the reviews to this is a different sound few a different kind of work do you agree this different sound different vibe for you or is it just the evolution of jenny i think the latter i mean i just right i make songs and music and it's just kind of following my life in a way the work it's parallel so it doesn't feel you know these songs started on a piano or guitar singer songwriter record so you know maybe the maybe it sounds a little different but it's kind of coming from the same place well let's go through a couple of tracks promise a listening party we're gonna take a look at the listen i should say to the first track heads gonna roll why do we start with this track this sets This sets the stage this tells the story and it's in three parts and there's a line. about book ends which i think kind of tells the whole story is not it's not a break-up record it's a rebound record Well, let's take a listen to heads. Gonna roll from Jenny Lewis. there's such specificity in your lyrics in this song why did you opt for such specific lyric sometimes people write songs that are have broader themes this one is so specific the devil's in the details for me as a listener or you know when i'm reading short story it's always the details again me i'm not as interested in platitudes which sometimes it's important to say i love you Herself. grime sorry or whatever it is you know like use the word blue because it just seems really well but for me just those little details that make it a little little different and the details do they have to be factual can they come from your magin nation when you're writing really personal music i think it's a combination of both that line we heard the nuns of harlem that's that's from real life oh tell me about that well i met a a a priest backstage at a dead in kosho at madden's madison square gardens and i just moved to new york this is a true story and i think he has a radio show a grateful dead sort of or music radio show and i told him that i just moved to town and i was a little lost and i wanted to do some service work and i am we struck up this conversation about music and and he said hey we'll all hook you up with the the nuns in in harlem in east harlem and you can go up there and you know and so he gave me a phone number and i called and i would just go up i went up a couple of times and and it just really kind of set the tone for my new york experience what was it internally that made you wanna do service work well i think when you're feeling lost in the world it's kind of the best way that you know is to connect and kinda get out of your own head about it and open your eyes and help out if you can not that i did any great you know just went up there and hung out and helped put food packages together but in those moments i was like okay everything's cool that's doing something though yeah I met a priest backstage at a dead. And that's another great line. But the random MRs life is really incredible. When you're open to it. that it is my guess is jenny lewis we're talking about her new album on the line let's take another listen to another track this is called party clown What does it mean to cry like Meryl Streep while you know what that means? We've seen her cry. That's like a real. That's a real cry. So the real thing, the ugly cry this when she cries. that like deep it's coming from the good kind of cry yet when meryl streep cries we believe it every time you crying a lot during writing this sure i cry a lot I'm a redhead. I'm very sensitive. When I play shows covered in, in, like goosebumps, the whole time I just feel like I'm like inflamed. Red means on inflamed. does it take you do you cry at happy stuff decried sad stuff do you cry yes babies i mean what does it what does it take but all of the above do you feel vulnerable when you cry some people don't like to cry a lot of women don't like to cry in public yeah i do and sometimes i try to choke it back i think you can ever completely choke back cry but that back to just like great acting those are the the actors that like almost they're trying to not cry and it's coming through like that's great acting not the overcrowding like when you're a child actor and there's a crying scene in the script they have the makeup artists there's this menthol thing that they blow into your is to make your you cry i don't know if they do this anymore this is against liberals but they you actually tear up when you're a kid so i can always clock it when it's like a fake menthol crow you know i know wow this out anything else from your your experiences a kid actor do you use any of that now absolutely one hundred percent for example well i was trained from a very young age i started working when i was three which i can't remember that but i i think it's this motion accessibility where when i was a little kid you know they would teach you how to cry which you would think about your let's say dog dying and they're saying this to child and they blow this menthol stuff in your eyes so here accessing like this deep part of yourself and so i think it just opened from a very young age and so i i really learned how to access that that place did you have to over time though learn to protect it to build a wall around it Yes. when did you realize that was that was something you had to do to be able to survive Well, I'm not ashamed about the I feel but I I'm often careful about who I share that intimacy what very intimate to be kind of raw in front of someone. So, but at the same time, you know, you are you are and. cried out and not everybody is careful or with people's feelings and emotions especially artists some people just not even they're kind of they're careless my guess is the word we're artists were feelies we feel stuff all feels you've ringo starr is on this album how did ringo starr working with him i will as solo artist part of the processes putting together a band for each album i'm not in a rock band with like four other four dudes you know so so putting the band together for this album i really wanted to work with just some of the guys that have played on my favorite songs that are still studio session musicians jim kellner who played on magin don was ben mont tench from the heartbreakers grew played with on my last record a little bit so ringo was sort of like you know if you build it maybe ringo will come if you put together the killer band than maybe if you ask gringo he'll come and play double drums and which track is he on he's on red bull and hennessy with jim keller they played together the concert for bangladesh which is this amazing joy tears amazing show and he's on pets though that's a that's a that's a great band that's a really don was a great producer as well he produced nick of time bonnie raya big album which she was forty at the time when that came out isn't that creates remember 'cause when i was a kid came wow Forty seemed so far away. And yet here. Here we are here. We listen. my guest is jenny lewis her new album is called on the line this is the question you've been asked and i have to ask about ryan adams you know he was accused of sexual misconduct by his ex wife mandy moore another women this all came out right before your album came out One. How has it been to deal with this question? It's unfortunate. I don't. Is a bummer. and you know happened simultaneously my album came out so it's been a part of the dialogue which is you know it is what it is and that behavior's unacceptable so what do you do when you thought about how you were going to react to it we have people into it through social media you can do it one statement and i'm not talking about it anymore what did you decide what's the best way to go forward well i taught you know i talked to my friends and my micro friends and i talked to my sister and my manager and sort of as it was in a very heightened moment we all talked about you know a statement which fell appropriate and since then i've talked about it but but the important thing to me is to note that this is a part of my body of work i'm an artist i've been making records for a long time and he's a part of the story but he's on the whole story let's listen to another track from on the line this was called wasted youth let's take a listen i always find that sort of push and pull of just the great groove the bop and then the very seriously rex when you when you were writing this where you going for that sort of contrast well it's funny this lyric people keep hearing it as i wasted my youth on a puppy Which it's not not about puppies. but it's also about poppies and yeah i think i write what i write and i wrote this for someone who younger woman who was going through some hard times and still is actually and i wanted to kind of right a song from an older sister perspective and.

"No. From the late date change. Displaced. A baritone voice. Wrapping there that we haven't heard in a while. I know this song is a collaboration with founding members of ozone motley jolly tonight and cut chemist mode of him are also in Jurassic five, and I just love the song because to me it's just quintessential ozone lately. It's the first collaborative release that the guys have done with ozone lately since the debut in nineteen ninety eight just the sound of Los Angeles. Okay. So they got back together with Charlie tuna cut chemist's together for the first time in decades, really one offer they're gonna keep on collaborating. I don't know. I hope so they're taking the music on the road this year. They're promising to drop Bussan's all year long, this song about hope and change and freedom through power of choice and music. I hope it leads to a lot more collaboration over the coming year. All right. Let's move on to another artist who has a new album out, Charlotte. Gainsbourg? Well, this is a follow up to her 2017 album rest which made of top ten that year. She's released a five track EP there three new songs and two live tracks on one of which actually is a cover of Kanye west song called runaway which has received mixed reviews. But the song I wanna play today. Madeline is called such a remarkable. Charlotte Gainsbourg singing an English there. But she is the daughter of a French singer-songwriter, of course, says Ganz board and the English actress Jane Birkin, and they had this play. This hit song. They had together in the nineteen fifties. And this was scandalous when it came out because of the various. You know? So tell us the back story. Well, it's an interesting story because there's Gainsbourg actually wrote that song for Brigitte Bardot. They were having an affair and they actually recorded that song. I read somewhere that. I think it aired one time on the radio, and that was next after that and bardo was married. She didn't want to put it out. So when certaines transport got together with Jane Birkin invaded together. And that's the version we really all know A deer hunter.

I'm John horn. Thanks for joining us. I hope. I feel. Apple and Spotify have put out their list of the most streamed songs and albums of two thousand eighteen and that's Drake's God's plan, which is the most streamed track on Spotify. This year, Drake topped all the lists. Except for the one he didn't qualify for the number one spot on Spotify list of most streamed female artists, and that went to Arianna 'Grande when it comes to the streaming business itself. Apple music now has fifty six million subscribers Spotify claims eighty seven million pain subscribers along with one hundred nine million ad-supported active users, but overall how healthy is the music business. I put that question to Jim as what senior music editor at variety looking for wood to knock on the music businesses in better shape than it's been in decades. And there's a little bit of concern about what the future may hold because you know, Spotify. Here's made some ambitious forecast about reach. Profitability, which they never have and show no signs of doing. But there's no denying the fact that they have I won't say single handedly, but they certainly have led the revival of the music business, which was in the absolute doldrums seven or eight years ago and asked the revenue increases, even if the prophets aren't yet. Material are artists and record labels getting what they believed to be a fair cut from streaming services. Well, what you just said it's hilarious because they never think they're getting, you know, often with good reason if you're a huge streamed artists on one of the paid streaming services. I'm not really talking about YouTube. You can make a ton of money from it like Drake is making tons of money from streaming, but lower level, even medium level artists. Probably are not seeing anywhere near those sorts of numbers. You always hear about artists saying, hey, look at my Spotify. Check, I got four seventy five not realizing that in many cases. Not all cases. The money's going to the record label. I so, you know, the artist maybe could take a look at how much their label is keeping before they attack Spotify. Let's now talk about some of the top one hundred songs from Apple's rankings. It pains me to do it. But let's play a little bit of post Malone's rockstar. Okay. It only gets worse from there. But it's very top heavy. The top five songs.
