ADVENTUROUS DESIGN and CIVILIZATION BUILDING

"Welcome david i am just really happy to speak with you about these things at this exact time and i'm really excited to speak with you. Thank you very much. And you know if i were to ask you your current mission statement at this point in your life at this point in your work for your relationship with plants and planted spaces whether that's personal at home or it's also as manifested by teramoto. What would that mission statement be. David you know. I just did a funny thing last week where i was looking at our office profile on our website and we kind of have a think manifesto is too strong a word but we have kind of a a series of paragraphs that kind of outline what you're asking and i actually listeria and i looked at it and i was like. Oh my gosh this is out of date. And so then. I added in a couple of sentences that kind of explained that this manifesto or a this belief system is allowed to change any ball any point in time. So you your questions. Kind of timely. In that when a so i started teramoto with a turnout is not just mind. A it's it's alan for. Roy is my business partner. Jenny jones house partner in our la office and we have a team of about seventeen people at this point which is really incredible and All incredible humans. And when allen and i started teramoto our of guiding principle is a formally and conceptually adventurous office for landscape architecture. And i would say that that very much still rings true and a stand by that and that's like the tag thing on her instagram. That being said the practice has evolved. We the team has grown and time has passed and we've got to build a lot of work in evatt to learn a lot in all of this

"We generate set the tone that earlier rob was here. He was like we're we're start at four o'clock today. We're getting fucked up like chinese cancer. Read the room. Rob greet the also find all new york celebrate. It was just like journey can sniff out the people. That's when i pulled out my own we've and like held my hair like simba and then did karaoke screaming. Herbal was hear. Aaron tuning was anyway jedi. Tell us about telling guys do any of them. Yeah like hitter kind of like a second date thing so one guy asked follow me on instagram. I didn't even think about it. Because i don't think about it and i'm like oh should he is about to find out this thing and i said hey i read your post. Sorry that you're going through that. Like i just wanna give you ought like it was so nice behind which was just as other guy had gone like on a date or two with super nice but like i don't think either of us are really feeling it worth. I know somebody that went through this to and her boobs look great and i was like. Oh nine supportive. We were poor people through this. It's like just another person. I did this and they're fine. That's all i'm trying to here so it's almost like dating has become like wow. I'm getting all this support. Like i don't need partner boyfriend to go through this like i also am getting support from guys in ways that i need like the guy i had sex with. I went over there during lunch old. Y'all i was gonna do target getting dick and deck a patio furniture. Nobody went over there. Anna lacey thing. And i was like okay..

"Partner should just make your life easier. That's what it the whole point is. That's what love is like taking the weight off of somebody when they need it most so if somebody's not giving you exactly what you need like. That's a sign that it's not and i just love you. Were like i can do this. Single not alone. that's not the word surrounded by people. You've amazing dog. Looks like he's read and your family. And i just like i love that you were like i'm not alone and i can be single and this. This person is actually making things a little harder on me and we were just saying earlier like sometimes people latch onto a romantic partner in a hard time. Because that's what they think they need or something like it can sometimes even tether you to that person that you normally wouldn't even have held onto like we were. We were saying earlier. Because i always real at the jones like when samantha was like but smith stay with me through cancer. And it's like she wanted to break up with him but she felt tethered to him. And also smith as my run so no no shade smith ever like how she was like if you stay with me through cancer as only to him to be with him even though the relationship had expired and against fictional show but like.

"Yes johnny i just wanna say. I'm so impressed by how fast you went on top of this. I mean you like your friends were like i need support. This is what's happening. I tend to avoid things like the plag- you were like. I'm making the doctor's appointments. I'm doing the research. I'm going and you know. I think at least my inclination is to just be like. I'm gonna panic and not do anything about it and you're just like i'm going to address this fucking immediately. I think a lot of the attitude like my mom my mom through this and like having that support and the funny thing is me and my mom talk like maybe once every two or three weeks. We're just not people talk every single day. I was calling her four times a day. Whether i was crying whether i was. You know okay. Whether i was asking her opinion but i'm so thankful that she had gone through this because i don't i don't know if i would have handled it the same way And when you told. Is i immediately reach out to a friend who also had breast cancer and i said like how would you wanna be supported and she was just like when you hear those words. It's the worst day of your life. And so like. Just ask her what she needs and ask her how she can be helped. And we will talk about that with you and you know what you wanted from various elective in. I told to wanted to tell. Y'all i told a lot of girlfriend groups i because you know it just felt easier than like and also i didn't want to post something on social and then you'll be like oh my god. Why didn't you tell me about this. Yeah i also was like you know you can tell louisa and kate and meryl. I didn't feel as close to them because we don't talk everyday to just put it all on a group chat and guy. I reached out to girlfriends. I actually reached out to an ex boyfriend in denver to ask him if he knew anybody like. We're super close. Even though he's my ex-boyfriend we dated. You know in our twenty s. i was like. Are you fucking anyone with breast cancer. It was like i was like anyone. That's a holistic anything on colleges. Like i don't know you're just always tells me people that he has sex with so like any of these let me just put feelers out to my other guy friends. Anyone fucking it on colleges agriculture i. I barely had like any friends there. At this point. Like most of the people i knew our xs that i'm friends with don't even like a see that often so he actually reached out to his guy friend who was shot his ex girlfriend who was best friends with someone on the board of giving i believe or fundraising for at the Breast cancer fundraiser. So that's how i got connected with this. You know support group of women under forty with breast cancer which yeah. That was so cool to see. So you've got together with them and it was just like shared stories and like what was that like yeah. They have a fundraiser event. And to be honest. I almost turned the car on this. I don't sit around talk about breast cancer. Like i used to work for american cancer society. I want to talk about pink ribbons. I don't want to do any of this and i. It was a yoga class to this was actually after my lumpectomy so i can come back to my lumpectomy but everyone was so great and wonderful. Like i don't know. I'm not super buddy buddy when i first meet someone like i'm kind of quiet and i sit back and get to know people on my own time versus like johnny and breast cancer and what kind of breast cancer d- area. Where are you from. And i just ended up talking all these girls..

"Just like shows your opinion. I met you everyone is talking titties out. Yeah so fun. louise's jets. Were so annoying. Yeah they're like call them out again relief. Show so yeah. I found out. I had breast cancer. Recently it's called das. Which is ductile carcinoma insight. You which is essentially stage zero breast cancer because it has not become invasive and milk duct. I found this kind of like in the shower. But i've always been kind of a hypochondriac as like okay. This is probably not something i feel like. They always tell you like they would tell you like look for a bb or like a popcorn kernel or something. Well were you you breast exams like self like nog eilly like or i think i thought i if you soap up your boobs in the shower i always kind of felt like a guy would feel it like you hear that. Surely boobs tied dating like whether seriously or talk about thirty raised. Her arms mike. You have a ripple but you're supposed to do that like you're supposed to stand in front of a mirror and raise your arms up and like see if you notice anything that's different and that actually is what mine looked like but i'm not raising my arms in the mirror so i had a gynecologist appointment. I actually went in. I was like i'm not even going to point this how i'm gonna let her do the exam and then i'm gonna ask about it because i feel like if i pointed out maybe she'll beg that something like what you mean like her find. I was searching for. Like i didn't i didn't want to point it out. I wanted to be okay. And when she was like this feels weird like have you noticed this. I kind even. I feel like i was lying. I was like. I'm going to think i noticed it like it's not anything she's like. You know i would go get a mammogram and ultrasound and like i probably turned wait. I'm super hypochondriac. Scared all the time about getting something which is crazy. 'cause my health has always been so good so i think i've always been like something's going to happen. Is it. when you're feeling it was it on your nipple. So it was right above like you're looking at a clock kind of like two or three o'clock. Yeah so just like any kind of felt like fibers like a lump of tissue like especially when you're close to your period. Like if i mean people know this i feel like but never tried to give yourself a breast exam around period. You'll freak yourself out. Like i felt my today's like oh my god like lump in your nipple is like a weird area to touch. It freaks me out because you can feel like najah kindness. Yeah i get an like an enlarged like doctor. I guess what is it's a benign dot and it gets really big really hard and it hurts. Really bad doctor said to me. A good rule of thumb is like if it hurts really bad. It's unlikely that it's cancer. Yes but i saw doctor right away. Nothing her it just felt like something so a mammogram ultrasound. The doctor came and like the german a look from the movie taken. So it's already very scary. The good news is this doesn't look like cancer from my mammogram. Or my alter sound and so i was like okay. Good what is it and he was like..

"So again. I don't know if that's Jimmy Johns gone. Here's my idea or producers and then Janis like yet. I think that'd be good. I think Jenny Jones of Personnel Lakers. She seems super cool. I assume that she shoots. These are silvery in a day. You know onto the next one. You can have my baby. I at the alter whatever he also said that Jones quote kept twisting the knife which is so chilling. Incredibly tone deaf to be the nicest about it that I can be so. Jonathan Schmitz was convicted of second degree murder. Because there was. It was premeditated there was things behind what happened. There was catalyst happening behind. It wasn't just like I don't like this. Do you plan on on on killing him? So he was sentenced to twenty five to fifty years Jenny. Jones along with the producers were sued by Scott Amador's family. We're not doing a background check Jenny. Jones testified under oath that the producers told Schmidt that Zamira could be a man but Schmitz thought that the admire was a woman so they said hey listen we said it could be either. He just as soon as a woman. But that's not with the other side. Zazi found Scott AMADOR's family to be in their favor and ordered to pay. Twenty five million dollars and decision was later overturned. Because of the fact that the show producers Jenny Jones or not responsible because what happens after the ash show. We can't be responsible. Should this tons of papers that you signed? Oh Yeah can't be responsible in thirty years if you're like. I watched any Jones episode thirty years later. I WANNA killing spree. They can't just automatically and I do understand that if it wasn't so deceptive to get to that point now it's like scrap that or maybe have backups. You have people who are like I listen to on TV. I don't care if it's mind. Yeah my friend rather than I'll ever like I act like this person. We do a reenactment or something again. It's but that I think he went along with probably embarrassed again. You can watch it you can. It's it's there you can watch the trial and see John Jones. Who's obviously very upset and Jonathan Schultz was released from prison on parole for good behaviour in August? Twenty seventeen to age forty-seven honestly like prison. Looks like Dengue Welfare. Me Looks Pretty Good. I mean he looks like he's really well all right. Well I I was like oh. Wow this is has not been bad for you. I don't know if it helped with his problems with substance abuse mental health. Stuff like that and I'm Sh- you know. He seems like he was sorry for doing it. That doesn't make it right. That doesn't make a good and it's not going to bring Scott amador. Bow It's also the producers that facilitated this. I hope that they left the business and think about it every day. Well Jenny Jones then went off the air in two thousand three so it did not go anywhere lasted another eight years. It got pulled from certain. You know certain hours were pulling it. They're claiming there's other things that have been on your show. You had trans transgender on there. And then they claim there's a bunch of different reasons but you know probably that somewhat understandable but I would like to thank sources. Nbc News Dot Com article. The man who killed the Gay Admire Jenny. Jones show was out of prison and from the New York. Daily News Article Jenny Jones killer. Who murdered best friend over gay crush to be released from prison inside edition and Rancor Dot Com the bizarre case of the Jenny Jones murder and my episode of Jerry Springer which me and my roommate from college lacy summer were in the front row with Jerry Springer. Sh shirts can be seen still. Remember that episode threesomes foursomes more SOMs.

"And Scott. Donna has been helping Scott pursue his secret crush on John. Jenny Jones was one of many daytime. Talk show hosts in the nineties that had viewers tuning in to watch ordinary. People reveal their deepest darkest secrets but one of those revelations would turn deadly on the march. Sixth Nineteen ninety-five taping of the Jenny Jones show titled same-sex Secret Crushes ooh Scott Amateur thirty two admitted to being a secret admirer of acquaintance. Jonathan Schmitz Twenty Four. I think I have heard of this. It's a pretty pretty well known part of talk show history. Yeah Reality History and of course For the Jenny Jones show. Yeah Wow When things spiral out of control when things are on a show on TV for a show produced for television and it gets to something as extreme as like stalking taking life crime. It is absolutely fascinating or fine. Let me ask you a question you you worked as a producer show and you worked with a talent celebrities. Did you ever feel like you had to not the word manipulates? Not The right word. But in a way you have to do your best to make sure everyone does everything in a way so when you present it. It's it's like the best way possible. Yeah is there going bananas on setting? There's you know there's no bananas and we'll get yes. Of course they'll be worse than and I work on shows like real housewives running right people. I know people do work on the bachelor real housewives like shows like that and when you work with them they go into a mode. Sometimes you're like Oh yeah. They know how to do this. They know how to get a story out of this. And you have to do things and say things to make that happen. You're probably doing it day after day week after week dealing with different personalities. Louis and they're just trying to do their job. I understand it. No no one's out there intentionally trying to harm but they WANNA get a show and make sure the sponsors are happy in. The fans are happy in the ratings. Are Up and you know there. That's that's nothing new but this episode of Jenny Jones This is it went very very poorly. And there's one innocent person one victim but the guilt. I guess is really up to you where that lies. Yeah both Scott Madurai and Jonathan Schmitz. The live near each other in wait for it. Lake Orion Michigan okay. Michigan is adjacent. Because I'm from the Midwest scratch that we can continue contact Jonathan Schmitz. Who's like hey listen you have a secret admire? Yeah and he's come on the show he probably lives in your show. I Like I you know. I can't speak to what is going on in his mind but he probably sounds kind of appealing curious number one in mad. I'm looking for a connection. Yeah all those things that we want and the issue really begins the ownership of the show whether they told him it was a man or a woman in the fact that he inquired because really a big thing about this case is as they say they were. They didn't say it was a man or woman and they're still covered. Yeah his you know his side is like no I s times like listen if it's a guy I'm not interested. Yeah and I think that's a fair thing to ask and I can totally totally totally see producers avoiding that question and even lying. I watched the trial or as much as I see of it and interviews with people involved in new the people on the stand. And then you see notes saying that essentially a paraphrasing apprehensive about if it's a man he doesn't want to and Nagin really that's his nineteen ninety-five it speak on like you know the how people view same sex relationships or sexuality in general. Yes not very easy now. Nineteen ninety-five wasn't any easier. Very rent was barely just came out. Exactly right you know. Aids I think was still so much in the forefront of people's minds and the you know the government wasn't doing anything to make that easier out has the right to know the information before he was on there. They eventually went on to say that quote. We've talked to her. Everything is going to be fine. You can't use that. Pronoun. That's misleading. So if you you know you can go and find watch the the court case you see people saying oh no we. We said it could be a man or woman but now you see proof to the contrary. The problem is like it's like you. It doesn't seem that egregious to be misconstruing gender when you're trying to show but it's the cumulative social context and the way this man was raised and all the stuff that made this one not seemingly like a little lie. Well nine why? It's not good but and I'm sure the show wasn't being like listen. We don't care who has died for this. I know no one expects that. But they didn't know what they're working with like they do well. They really didn't know because they did not really a proper background. Check on it because he had a history of mental illness and substance abuse and he had just been in a relationship with a woman. I think being engaged for a while and the hugest broken broken up a couple of months ago so his his state wasn't added to the fact that he was deceive. However you want to interpret. It was just a recipe for disaster and the show really didn't do. It's really due diligence on his background. I don't know if the time if that was something that was like. Oh that's something we normally do or. That's something you know now for the Jenny Jones show that they would do something like that but I can see them. Also again kind of tracking NAIAD. 'cause they need they need to cast the show. The show's they're taping in this day and it's just like full speed ahead. People they take the show you can watch. It has never been aired. We can they use it for the trial and you can watch it. It's tough to watch because you know what's you know. It's it's not like an aired and then a lot of time passed where something bad happened. 'cause there's only three days later. Yeah he was embarrassed in front of a live. Studio audience doesn't matter aired yet. He he was embarrassed. And you know it's I can't put myself. I probably would be too when I know that you know everyone has the the you know the benefit of hindsight sure fluid about it and maybe you would have been through a lot. Who has a bunch of different issues that could be triggered at any given moment having a bunch of cameras? A bunch of lights on Him Jenny Jones looking at hand being ambushed. Yeah and revealed that what he did expressly did not want to happen. I don't know if he had a sense of like probably was thinking like. Oh well I mean it's not You know Sharon Stone Guinot is got to be something about it to make it entertaining. So I'm Marie had an idea and then when they were like oh no. It's like well. They told me it was so at least they kind of let me in on it but not true. So he was. He was ambushed. And it's you know you watch it and you know everything seems fine. They you know taped it. Probably a little bit embarrassed and the the guy on was Scott amador older thirty four. He's thirty two and he's driving twenty four. It's definitely like sensational and a little bit sleazy of the show to do with this. Yeah actually that I. I went to a Jerry Springer taping In I mean this is ten years after this but even just like. I think it's part and parcel to be sleazy but again not even understanding what that might mean an unfair to discuss. Because he was like I want to do. This show wants to do is. They're doing their work. So I'm you know I'm not lying. I'm not deceiving. And then what happened is three days later. Scott left the note that was quote suggestive. What was on the note? I don't know at Jonathan Smith's House so Jonathan's mid read. The note withdrew money from the bank. Bought a shotgun. All my God went to Scott Amador's mobile home Approach about the note. Hey what's the deal with this note? Paraphrasing and or the compensation was I wasn't there and then went back to his car got the shotgun and then shot Scott madore twice in the chest and he immediately called nine one one in conflict. I mean I'm sure we did it it was. I can't speak to what was going on his mind. I don't know who he called nine one one two two after dinner sleeve so it was and I can't say Scott didn't leave that note if you left well enough alone because the the episode never aired than there was a trial and according to Jonathan Schmitz. Defense lawyer Jenny. Jones wanted Scott amador to give Schmitz flowers and kiss him.

"Here's here's the they tape only a couple of days in advance. Well, here's what happened Smits adorn Riley all returned home to Michigan. Where Schmitz later told police that his experience at the television taping had quote eating away at him three days later. He founded unsigned note of a sexual nature left. It has apartment assuming it was from Amador Schmitz bought a shotgun and ammunition. He went to the mobile home and shot him twice in the chest at close range. He then immediately called nine one one turned himself in. He was. Convicted of second degree murder in nineteen Ninety-six commissioned conviction was overturned on appeal found guilty again nine hundred ninety nine both defense attorneys and prosecutors in the case as well as the families of both Schmitz and Almodovar said after the slaying that Jones and her staff shouldered some of the blame for Ahmadou murder. I remember that accusation as well, the Jenny Jones show ambush this defendant with humiliation, and that may have something to do with his release as well. It's like it caused what would be a guy a normal guy who wouldn't shoot anybody to completely snap and not be able to deal with it. Not that. It's right. But it makes it more understandable. It's tough to it's tough to figure out how responsible they are. They certainly did set it up, and they certainly did trick him. There's no doubt about it. But I know everyone's different. But if I was in that same situation, it was television. I would I would be very accepting of it. I mean, obviously, he was not the opposite. But I would just go. All right. So here's a guy who lives in my building. He's got a crush. Elizabeth has a Hasselbeck is not like an Rosie crushing honored. She's where she hoping she doesn't kill her. She's just praying for this was in ninety five, you know. And and first of all you would never appear on Jenny Jones show as guest, you would warm up the audience or something. But you know, what? I mean, these people, and I feel kind of sorry for them. It's like this guy from Michigan. Hey, you wanna be on the well? Yeah. And they fly you out and you get to go on a show. I mean, I could see where he'd say, yes. I could see I wouldn't be humiliated. I could see where someone might be. I have to Jenny Jones stories that I think you would find entertaining. The problem is we're very short on time. But I knew someone who worked on the show. I knew somebody very well who worked on the show. I also knew somebody who was a guest on the show and both had very interesting stories tell about their experience around Jenny Jones Tijuana reveal this. Yeah. I can do that. Can I finish? Jeffrey Feiger was the attorney who represented the Madore family in a civil suit against the show's producer and its owner Warner Brothers. He told people that after serving twenty two years Schmitz had completed virtually his entire sentence. I'm not absolving Schmitz of his crime Feiger said again, this is the attorney for Madore. I'm just saying the Jenny Jones show and the people that were behind the show were equally responsible. A jury agreed in nineteen ninety nine awarding the Almodovar family twenty five million dollars in damages. According to CNN story at the time five million was awarded for a doer suffering before he succumbed to shotgun wounds. Ten million was awarded for his family's loss of his companionship. And another ten million was awarded for the loss of income. He would've earned over his lifetime. It's still an people always say this one a large sum of money is given out as part of the settlement. I'd always rather have the guy back then the money if people don't want a lot of money, but if you're somebody. No one says that people you thought then. No, you wouldn't rather have the money. Would you rather the person you love? I hope not Frank Commodore junior. Scott's older brother told the news magazine that anyone who's lost a family member to murder. He's not comfortable knowing that Schmidt. No. And that was just two years. That would be the thing. I would have fought. Like crazy say, look, I know a lot of time has passed and I do believe in rehabilitation, but he took somebody very important in my life and ended them. Yeah. Let this guy out. And then he went on to say it might be easier. If he was old an old grey haired man, but he's still pretty young at forty seven. Still got a lot to go. And my brother doesn't. Yes. We'll said very well said why don't we do this? We'll take a break Kim give you the news. And then if you're okay with these jokes stories. All right. Can I just tell you though, we promoted the fact that we were going to talk about why your brain loves procrastinates that. But let's put it off. What's called American west? The sixty minute men. They'd bring us that. We'll talk about it some time. But I do the journey Joe story and just a couple of minutes. All right. I'll make them quick. And then we'll get to the procrastination thing. I'd probably sorry Kimmel give you the news next. It's Bill and Wendy in WGN..

"I mean ramp-up economy. Cut off his penis. And she wasn't entirely the villain in this, by the way, even at the time. Like, you know, feminists were sort of like, at least jokingly sort of taking her side and sort of more seriously taking her side to talk about marital rape. Like, I don't actually think that she was treated in a way that seems odd to our is now I think it was actually weirdly more fair than the way that Anita hill in Monica Lewinsky retreated, I'm I'm yeah. I mean, there's I'm definitely don't think that that it's on the same is on a par with Monica Lewinsky, but I have to say that as much as my first response is as the as the documentary began. I was not that impressed with it. But then it did feel like there was something really important about seeing how the media treated the story. So for example, he and his brothers Ronin episode of the Jenny Jones show kind of a daytime a women's show and the way that they're. Kind of the demand. The brothers would set I wanted to kill her because she took the thing that is most important to a man the way that the doctors talk about like my God, he might have had to pee like a woman his whole life. And like, the the these things that you know, as if like again, I don't mean to like, it's not nothing that she maimed him. That is not okay. On the other hand, you know, the fact that we, you know, kind of outside of the specifics of the case like that that was considered on a par with the concept of marital rape. And there were many people at the time you said, well, that's an oak Seymour on. You know, the the word people that were jurors who said can you really rape, your wife, and that that you know, so to hear those attitudes. At least it was. So maybe it's not so much about lorraina herself. But the attitudes of that were expressed them without much pushback. Even though like I'd been on feminine. Publications at that point where we certainly did give push back in and the marital rape laws were suddenly a subject that we wrote about. But it that was fringe, you know, in the mainstream of America, it was kind of a joke. Although it seems like this case actually made it more of a discussion, and and more of a clear moral thing for many people. Yeah. Yeah. I think she kind of punctured the culture with the exception of this wife rape thing which which people did have a hard time getting their minds around like to me. It's more like what happened with fatal attraction like she just kind of channeled a rage of the moment appropriately. Like, she just kind of. It's like do we shut down? Or does something get unleashed by an event. And so with Monica Lewinsky like everyone shut down like we need a broaddrick. Everyone shut down. It was like this isn't really happening. You know, we love our president. But with with Lorena Bobbitt, I feel like everything just kind of exploded like a certain kind of anger from women. Particular kind of feminism like they're just something like they were just some like she was like rage unleashed in the culture in the way that some tabloid stories. Can do you know? Yeah. I mean, just the metaphor of it the lake the just Freudian young, and whatever you wanna call it. It's the lake I it's just a perfect little rage retribution tale, you know, like, how could the culture non-exploded around is sort of like, how did it take us this long like an serve this. There's this central conceit that is just such a, you know, I'm talking about like, it's a movie this is central conceit. Like that Lorraine applauded know that I mean, the the central fact of it is so arresting, but all the details around it just struck me as like so fully American, you know, just the whole milieu of it was just like this is our American tragedy like the anger that the sex habits other this sort of you know, she she was staying with in him in this bad marriage..
