"Instruction, some places they are elected and other places. They are appointed by a state board of education. But the state board is appointed by the governor. So there's a little bit of space in between. I think and maybe like in a couple places the state board of education might be elected. But it so it's all sorts of different mix than mix and matches and also, but Democrats right to do this past week was that whoever was appointed superintendent public instruction. They say that would have to have an education background. Oh, yes. Yes. And there and and how has that been received? Are there? Any Republicans willing to say that sounds like a good idea this way, none of those two things happen. Rob KENDALL visiting with game Shabazz the program statehouse happenings. "Now. And I heard you say a couple of times the system and the politics talking to a state superintendent of public instruction. Dr Jennifer McCormick. I don't wanna talk in generalities. We are many of us are parents were all paying attention. We think education does matter if we're going to spend the kind of money we're spending we want to see results so off of the generals and into the specifics name me something that needs to change. I'll take one thing. I'll take five things I got nothing but time. Yeah. So one thing that needs to change of the state board designed at the state board needs to be looked at it. It's not necessarily the membership of that board that the way the staffing structure, and this is not a personal attack on the staff. It's the structure of it. So you have a lot of duplicated services. So we have a director of accountability. For example, that does a great job for the state of Indiana. But there are times where she's not even consulted when we're talking about accountability. And we've got the data. We've got the trend information she's up a national meetings. We're developing, you know, it's kind of important to have your director of accountability at the table for all discussions involving accountability. She's a highly respected person. She'd been at the department for many many years extremely intelligent. But those are just some of you know, we have a lot of competent experts in the field that we are the ones that are doing the work at the grassroots level that people depend upon but on many of the conversations that are taking place with the state board. And the power to the state board staff at times, you know, were absent in the conversations, which is really unfortunate when we're implementing did you bring these concerns to governor call Kim. I talked to a lot of people like governor HOGAN. Governor hokum I brought my concerns out to talk to the Senate and the house leadership, and though these aren't the crisis to anyone I tried to a directly concerned, but it's beyond my thority. So again, I have limited a thorny in that arena. It's not my board. It's they're not my appointees. Obviously, I'm not running the house, and I'm not running the Senate. Then though that I have expressed my concerns numerous times. If changes were made, would you stay? I would consider it. Yes. I think it changes were made. And there were there were there was an attempt for efficiency and making sure that the department would allow the hands off. Let's do our job. You know, I'm okay with people holding near accountable. We're not getting it done. Absolutely. Hold me accountable. Throw me out office. I am okay with that. But we we have accomplished what we have accomplished. It's pretty difficult to look at our team at the department, and I say the entire almost three hundred people at the department and our local school to have partnered. Look it up and say, you know, we don't agree with what you what you're doing. Because you're not accomplishing anything therefore taking away authority. That's a pretty weak argument, given our track record and in our actions. Dr.

"On the level on the go. Why one woman claims she's been intimidated by house speaker, Brian Bosma and his attorney radar is clear. The star reports the woman says she and Bosma had a sexual encounter then and that in the past year Bosma hired an attorney Linda Pence to intimidate her into keeping quiet Bosma. That's the analogy used this morning by Dr Jennifer McCormick the state superintendent of schools. She tells Ninety-three WABC's Tony cats. She's not running for reelection. Because there are too many layers of government involved in making decisions for Indiana's school, very dysfunctional in it's very disruptive. And it isn't what's best for students. "It is fifty three degrees in the American standard heating weather center on we get that. Right. Gonna be a high today of fifty five the time is eight eighteen. So if you wanna talk about high profile quasi resignations, you can talk about Nikki Haley, the ambassador to the United Nations that news that shocked all America and probably the world closer to home. It was when Dr Jennifer McCormick, the superintendent of public instruction said, you know, what I don't think I'm going to run for this job. Again. This is not what I thought it was going to be. She joins us right now. Dr mccormick. Appreciate you being with us. I you absolutely shocked a lot of people when you made a decision this early on that you won't be seeking another term and one of the lines that you use if I can quote you when I got into this office. My charge was I want to do what's best for kids. I think back to that time. It was so cute. I was so naive. And that that is that is a slap in the face to quite literally everybody around you. That's what it certainly seemed like to a lot of people talk to me about what it is. You thought the job was and what it is you saw and where are the problems as you see them? Yeah. I think first of all things for having me this morning, and let me get my methadone. I think it's always good when we can talk for the sake of students, but you know, when I ran for office. I knew that the governance structure with difficult. I knew that there were problems between superintendent's office and the governor's office. That was not a secret. I also knew as they local superintendents how that impacted local schools in it, and most importantly, how it impacted the students within those schools. And so, you know, I was charged with you know, I wanted to come in reward the department which we did we wanted to come in and calm the deal, which we did. But I also ways over assuming there would be a willingness to address the governance structure, and and that is not happen today. And it's very dysfunctional in it's very disruptive. And it isn't what's best for students. It's just unfortunate. So let's talk about that government structure because if I understand it properly. The policy is set by the general assembly and the state board of education. But as you've described it's implemented by the department of education. So is your argument that you Bill Parcells used to say if you want me to cook the meal, you might wanna let me by some of the ingredients. That's why he wanted to be a part of the draft process in the NFL is the issue here that what what you do. You're not allowed to set the policy to what it is. You do. And I think part of that is that you want me to cook the meal, you gotta let me take over the kitchen. So there are a lot of cooks in that kitchen right now, which makes it very very difficult. So I understand the state board sets policy were there to implement and the things we have done we have implemented. Very well. But we also I'm not a firm believer and having a lot of layers of governance because they're it causes confusion. It's not a distant. It becomes dysfunctional. And so I'm okay with the state board setting policy. Absolutely. That's their charge. But a lot of the authority of implementation has been mo- moved over to the state board, which is caused confusion. There are times when the state board honestly been putting in a bad situation, where they're not real sure what they're implementing or how to implement and so we've had a lot of memorandum of understanding and and tried to muddle through that, but if not as clean, as it should be on paper in on theory, is it doesn't operate that way because of politics talking to Dr Jennifer McCormick state superintendent of public instruction in the state of Indiana talk to me about the politics are these and as clear as day are these Republican, my politics democrat politics, or in general, the politics of government. I think it just government. You know, there are a lot of special interest groups that way into that that make it very difficult. You know, we bed from the beginning when it's about students or the appearance. I mean, I'm a mom for sign an educator. I'm honored to be state superintendent, but from the get-go we made it clear, I don't care if you're democrat Republican independent if you have good ideas and one assist with students. We are willing to learn to listen, we're here to service one point two million students, regardless of political families. So that's our charge and the government structure in itself. And I know we're not alone across the nation. Every a lot of people who are struggling with this. But it makes it very difficult because of again, a lot of it's driven by special interest groups or single item agenda, and so it just becomes very difficult. And it, you know, I go back to you know, we've been in for about six hundred forty days and the work that we've accomplished that is directly aligned to the governor's Heller and is really good work. The nationally recognized who've been wreck. At the state level, it solid work, and we will continue to do solid work for the remainder of my term. But the system itself really can slow some things down. And that is just really unfortunate when you have kids moving through a system, we've talked now, I I've heard you say a couple of times the system and the politics talking to you a state superintendent of public instruction. Dr Jennifer McCormack. I don't wanna talk in generalities. We many of us are parents were all paying attention. But we need to we need to sell the evidence. You cannot just say to somebody I was sexually assaulted or you did that to me or because sometimes the media goes too, far and the way they portray some stories. It's it's not correct. It's not right. That's the first lady. Are you? Okay. With that answer. If you're asking me, the answer is yes, I'm very, okay. With that answer. I look forward to this becoming a more publicized conversation. And hearing all the women decide she's a traitor. Well, not all the women. Just all the women who a Hirono says are women, we've got Dr Jennifer McCormick. The superintendent of public instruction up next. She's not coming back to do this job. So let's talk about the problems with this job. That's happening next. Our very own Indiana's superintendent public instruction up next. I'm Tony cats. Time to sell your house. I get it. I get it. It's just time. It's just that moment. You know, the moment. Right. It's like, I listen, we got we got we got a right size. We gotta change the size of the house when he bigger when he's smaller. We need to get out of this neighborhood. We need to change some things around the moment comes and when it does you'll call Rodney and Amanda heard in the heard real estate team to get that done experienced effective and really great people loving what they do their whole team built to help. And make sure you get exactly what you want which is fantastic service and top dollar for your house. That's what it's all about Larry figured this out when he talked to Ronnie and Amanda he had spoken to a couple of agents three of them. And they suggested a list price for his home there in Carmel rotting. Amanda, they said, no, no, no, you get much more for this. And he said, how do you think you can get much more for this? And then Rodney in Amanda showed him the marketing plan the house sold in one day. For over list price. This is what Rodney.

"Officials are really good at throwing out phrases like a state that works. Stay gercy from good to great. Crap. We're we're just better than Illinois. That's not saying much. We are better than Eleanor. But that's about it. And one of the things that happened during Jennifer mccormick's time in office shortly after she was elected is the legislature at the behest of governor Eric Holcomb moved to take away the right for people to vote on the state superintendent, it's an elected office. We pick this person and starting in twenty twenty four of the state superintendent is you're no longer going to have the right to vote on that office. It's going to be appointed by the governor. And there had been some some rumors that they were going to move that up to twenty twenty. And here's what she said about this, quote, keeping she's a Republican. This is a Republican saying that she's holcombes Republican supermajority is in the Indiana house and Senate. This is what the Republican head of education in Indiana said about working with the Republican governance in the state. Her words, not mine, quote that noise can be a problem and that can be distracting, and I have no patience for that. Because I got into this office because I said I want to do what's right for kids. That is a huge indictment now soon as she says that because basically what the legislature did is they acquiesce this woman as well. We're gonna we wanna point this this person until twenty twenty four so the you can run for re-election. You young lady we will grant you the ability to run for election now kiss the ring finger of the Indiana legislature. Course, we're screwing six million plus hoosiers on the right to vote on this office. But you will be spared Madame McCormick. And now soon as the announcement came.

"I'm staying Lear. Here's what's trending this hour. Indiana's Republican Senator Todd young says, the Democrats are using political theater to block the president's supreme court nominee that they're not going to support John to sit on the supreme court of the United States, which is a bit ironic because all of them are insisting on what more information they want more information. But they've already decided they're not going to vote for him, which strikes me is is a little unfair Indiana's other Senator Joe Donnelly, one of only a handful of Democrats to meet with cavenaugh is still not saying how he will vote on the judge's nomination spotting troubled students and getting them the help they need a critical part of school security says state superintendent, Jennifer McCormick districts are saying we've got to have money for that social emotional learning piece. There are no yellow flags. If there are flags red flags we need. To act on those red flags you spoke at a conference in Indianapolis. Maybe you didn't enjoy all that rain, but the finish to the Brickyard four hundred was worth the wait. Brad Keselowski was three back with three laps to go on the restart and somehow he found his way past Hanlin Jones and Harvey. I knew that if I didn't get them there. I probably wasn't going to win this race. And so I'd slugger down in their sideways and just barely stuck in. And here we are in victory lane. And with that Team Penske has its first victory in the Brickyard four hundred. I'm staying Lear on the level on the go on Twitter at ninety three WIBC and WIBC dot com. Now, here's the forecast from the American standard cooling weather center. Dry tonight, but fog develops temperatures will fall into the middle. Fifties fog early Tuesday, then partly sunny, seventy five in the afternoon, partly sunny, seventy eight the high Wednesday, I'm RTC imagining a better Bank starts with looking at the savings rates most banks offer and saying really Capital One. Is building something better. You can open a Capital One savings account.
