"I remember lying on the floor being in my underwear and having just been really thrown around. You know, because she really was thrown around the room. There's no denying that you can't fake that. She was just lying on the floor. I couldn't get up. I was just completely humiliated in devastated and angry inside. Wow. Right. I had no idea that she felt that way about that scene really hit her on a visceral level. You know. Keith Urban was saying that after But she did the scenes that day or he was really feeling for her, too. And just how she got into that role, and just the physical toll of it because it is. I mean, you watch you watch those scenes. It is tough to watch. It is so realistic and unflinching and a terrifying All right. In hateful eight. Kurt Russell was totally in character when he grabbed a guitar from Jennifer Jason Leigh and smashed it into pieces. Nobody told him it was an antique Martin from the 18 sixty's worth 40 grand. Oh go. No way. Jennifer Jason Leigh had falling in love with the guitar and was heartbroken, and Kurt Russell nearly cried himself. Because he did not know that it wasn't just a prop. It was a wheel it so it was like a moment that he like improv moment. Oh, that's just a loss, or did you have to pay for it? God, I'm sure he didn't. But still, he probably just felt terrible. Wouldn't you? Oh, my God, We're time. We're time for one more. Okay, Let's do this one Titanic. Kate Winslet. Of course. "In the central. Song to the film somebody's baby. The reference of the Great Song Somebody's baby is to what what actually ends up being the central character of the flick and that is stacey played to perfection by Jennifer Jason Leigh Funny Thing, is that if you notice Sean Penn gets top billing as the coli but like the book, it really is the story of Stacey and her growing up at that moment in history. She's the central character and in nineteen eighty teen comedy sex romps. The ladies were never the central character. So that is a pleasant surprise. Anyway, she is somebody's baby, of course in the end. Is Mark Ratner's. The rat hey, did you know the guy rat was modeled on a went onto write those for dummies books? About that crazy thing when you're doing the research, of course, Danny coach, my wrote somebody's baby along with Jackson Browne by the way Russ Kunkel plays drums on it as well. And there is the Stevie Nicks Song not on the soundtrack but in the film sleeping angel, with wate playing Guitar let's face it. Stevie don't go anywhere without Wadi Oh and it's mixed by our good friend recording legend Shell. US. Lots of immediate family references, lots of Pantheon podcast breath. Just by association that is. Shelly make it even weirder. You know I had a conversation with Robert Marg laugh this week and he produced the ongoing go song. Who knew in forty years after the release of this seminal film I'd be talking to so many people associated with it was weird I. I saw the film. I saw Danny's name while the credits rolled listen to the PGA Bongo Song as the credits rolled and there's Danny there's Richard and I said I'm Gonna I'm GonNa make the end of this about fast times ridgemont hides. It's kind of a little in the site geist all maybe a little pass when you listen to this but. Seemed like the the appropriate thing and then I went into this rabbit hole and found all kinds of people that we have spoken to that have been associated with with the the film so. Anyway That was fun side trip and I think it says that we are talking to some really great people who did some really amazing things for music over the years. Okay. That is it. For this week next week, I'll be doing a two part series on the Record Label Little Village Foundation first up I had the pleasure to speak with label president, Jim Pugh, and then I will release my interview with the sons of the soul. "Fat. Oh I'm sad because it was a lot of build up to it. So many are I got so many good notices more than ever my career so I like my whole team like I said to. My team would mean for years. Twenty twenty five years and. I think they had a lot of hopes on they wanted it to and I felt like I let everybody down a little bit. What do you think? Do you guys need validation like that in your career to feel like you've done a good job. I think I looking at you for God. Don't look so good anyway I E validation right now I think that thank you. I think that if you work really hard on something and there's a lot of anticipation about it and people. There's speculation that you were going to achieve something great and then it does not happen. Yeah I I mean I do think I would like validation. I worked really hard on something I would like people to be like. You did a good job or you look great or I like your dress or whatever. I think everybody wants that. I don't think people don't want yeah I don't I don't feel like people don't WanNa be recognized. People want people to acknowledge them. I don't care about the relegation. Cash is more important. I want you to validate me and say hey you have been killing it and rocket and going above and beyond and we are going to reward you. That's how my validation works. I don't need great job on that interview. Are you killed it like I would rather a note back then a compliment and that's also but this is different from what she's experiences I think also she was so close the closest in her career that she was actually going to achieve an Oscar potentially and I think once she doesn't get that it's less about not being nominated. It's more about like the chances of me. Getting that again are are probably a little bit there slim tonight. I think she'll get it again. I think now that she has a taste for what that role looks like and feels like the problem with Jennifer Lopez. And I hate to say this. She wins too much in order to get an Oscar. You have to not win that year. Let me tell you when Marylin Oscar that means at Merrill does not do movie for three years then she does a movie and then she comes out of retirement and she wins. Because Merrill is not doing blockbusters here. She's not headlining tour. She's not on that stage. Doing Superbowl Oscars love to give it to people who stick to the craft and who do a role and haven't done anything else Jason into that. Let me tell you. Jennifer Jason Leigh. Okay let me just let you all know. Single White female was one of my favorite favorite movies. Jennifer Jason. Leigh did something in two thousand and two a movie. She didn't do another movie for fourteen years. Came back. Did the grateful eight put on prosthetic teeth. And everybody was like you know what? Give her an Oscar for that. Let's give her a nomination. No Jimmy draw. I think Jennifer Lopez wins too busy that who knows one she'll be able to do a serious role like this again and invest her whole self into it like what she put into. Hassler's I feel like she would. I think she is fulfilled invalidated but I think when there was so much hype surrounding yes specific thing. That's why you're disappointed because everyone is literally like. Hey you're so close to an Oscar. How you're gonNA feel when you wake up tomorrow and get that nominees. Yes well Geez. Maybe maybe eight actually will happen. Because I'm getting all these other nominee her getting an Oscar was something that I know that she's an actor but not really. She's a dancer and performer. So I don't even feel like an Oscar was something that she necessarily really desired strongly before this. I think this all kind of worked out. If you get yourself on a screen in a movie you want the same roles as she's doing maid in Manhattan. She's doing things that are like we love. We love you will get the If there is a new category cosker she would have had fifteen this scene. How much parasite me they don't make money. That's how they roll. Leo Took Him Aber the Resurg- on because it was almost too easy for Leo. He's just so good and everything but they wanted him to really work. They really wanted to water into women. Signed a bear all right. We are reading your thoughts the bachelorette casting. None of these things clear is perfect. She says she knows exactly what she wants. I'm just glad they chose someone more mature. Lena isn't sure about Clara's the Bachelorette. She says she's trying too hard to get the job and running loves the choice. He says she's older deserves to find love and she's from my hometown right. You know what else are tired of people being like okay. We'RE GONNA get engaged where not going to get married or this is the promise Mang. This'll thirty eight knows what she wants. Ready they're going to get that baby special. They're going to get everything all of that. Are you guys up? Next reports that Meghan markle returns to Hollywood spotlight and it might be at the met gala. Is that.

"All right there we go my. Name's Todd Mrs Kathy. Welcome back to another episode of culturing. We're doing a movie that I like to call. Fast Ridgemont high. I think most people like to call it. That that's right. We Watch this yesterday. Had so many movies to choose from. We just ran with Fast Times not a long movie. Our twenty-seven yes short movie movie. Yeah I you know whenever we watch these movies. I don't know if I probably haven't seen this movie in twenty years but it probably seen it fifty times well and that's the thing as we're watching it. I was like like we could have literally been annoying. Recited exactly what they were going to say. And even if I didn't remember exactly what they were going to say I remember the energy of what they were GonNa say like remembered the whole tone of the movie and you know what I was thinking is I was watching it. I was thinking we did. A parenting are culturing on stranger. Things and I I remember when we talked about stranger things. Stranger things third season about how there were so many similarities fast times Ridgemont high like it might as well have been the same amol injuring outside shots. Yeah they shot those scenes after it closed nine o'clock at night I just read all the stuff on. IMDB about fast times really. I don't even know why that's interesting but so the what surprised that I have whenever I watch these movies for the first time in a long time the one some kind of surprise was not a whole lot happens in this movie. I love it a lot of like. There's there's Stacey in Damone and him getting her pregnant there's Coley yeah. Yeah because just like the the comedic Brad kind of going through a crisis but nothing really happens with him that's life like it's just like boyhood right like the whole thing about the movie boyhood woiuld The Story Brad Stories. He has a girlfriend he wants enjoy senior by not being tied down. She breaks up with him and he gets caught masturbating. That's Brad well back up a little bit. Brad is in his senior year. He's realizing how cool he is because he's got that great. 'cause have you ever seen anybody as happy as he was driving drive into salt. That day washing his car he was raised on the radio. He was raised on the radio. So Brad is excited. I did because he's got the car. He's a senior and he's been with his girlfriend. WHO's the girl from nightmare on? Elm Street O'Reilly is a nightmare on ELM street. You you play. She was the girl who she. She wasn't Nancy. She was the girl who died. I I think she was the one who is in the body bag who when she opens her mouth. That like thing comes out. You know that movie and much better than and we're starting to think of a horror movie to do for pop culture. Maybe we'll do nightmare. Maybe very eighty johnny duck a little johnny. And there's some big johnny any depth news. Yeah but let's say that okay. That'll that'll take off the rails okay. You're right so anyway but then Brad wants to break up with her. Yes because he's he's like gotta be single because he's got to be true himself. Yeah yeah he's got a seal his own sir. His lawyer. Don't cry washing rushing the merits with some really do swear on the show but I'm not saying but he and I think in the TV version they wrote a different set of words or were they fuzzy it out completely redid it for TV really funny so anyway and then once he gets fired from all American Burger because of Arnold yes had to take a Piss Arnold. He's like hope that will. Does he say to him. Helluva Piss Arnold so anyway. He's mean to a customer. He he gets fired. This is the raised on the radio. This is what he's washing the car. I'm just trying to take people back in Philly. Play the song alive now. While he's washing that car what does he call it the cruiser the cruising vessel. Yes so the big car once. He gets fired from all American Burger. He doesn't want to break up with his girlfriend anymore because he feels really alone and she then breaks up with him during the PEP rally. Yeah and then almost weird to me like did does a loss of a job really make that much. I think what made vulnerable. I think all American Burger was like the cool. We'll place to work. Didn't look that cool nick cage work. There he did wasn't that Nicholas Cage was in or was Nicholas cage in the scene Hughes barely. Why is he even credited in this movie? He's got no lines because he's he's credited in the movie as Brad's Bud. Right he working at all American Burger or was he working at the place that Arnold used to work. I don't know and Brad has a hard time. Hold down a job as we know what he doesn't he does. Was it. Seven eleven buddies at the pirate place. I know but let's go through that really quick. Let's just go through. Brad overly quick but so let's talk about brats so he is at all American Burger. He's doing great he's like probably probably been there a few years. His girlfriend is they're paying off his car. He's so happy he gets fired from there. What he doesn't like he's depressed that he has to work at the place where the hat just a pirate? The pirate had that's why he's depressed so he eventually quits that and that's why he ends up at the smart but he's a good worker right because he always job he does. And there's a lot of kids who have jobs in this movie. Stacey Linda rat right. The only one who doesn't speak only damone sells tickets. Yeah he's a scalper but don't call scalper so I want to compare this to a few other movies okay in obviously these were movies like when we saw no. I'm going to go back further when we saw fast times original high. What year was it? Oh it's a good question. I should know the answer to that but I don't okay so pull that up for eighty two. I was ten years old okay so we probably watched it. We didn't I didn't see in the theater but we probably watch two once. It came out on the movie channel right or a Vhs vhs so we probably saw it by the time we were. I was in sixth or seventh grade. And we all had seen this movie. We all knew this movie and as being that age there were some things that were surprising to me but a lot of it wasn't meaning when you watched it originally. Okay yes meaning I think that as parents and as just adults who are in our forties we forget them Nesia we of Amnesia about our teen years as we kind of remember certain stories and we kind of block them out in our brain. We're kind of like. Oh this is what mine was like and my kids are going through a completely different experience and they they need more support or they don't know what they're doing or can you believe this generation seven or worried about sexual activity or whatever it may be and then you go back and watch fast times and you're like Oh same struggles and and taken up a notch. I mean let's just talk about you know the sexuality in this movie and this was based on a real book. The Cameron Crowe wrote about his own high schools in San Diego. Yeah Yeah So. He didn't like just didn't come out of his imagination. I kind of feel like it's a older version of American Pie. Seemed like a real high school portrayal a little bit. I don't know I just thought that it was yes. There's certain parts of that that completely get that's the way kids are like for real. You're right like the party's yeah you're right. I don't WanNa be dismissive because I didn't American Pie was like I didn't. We were too old to get into it right. We're adults in so we didn't this this to me resonates a lot more more but I remember being a little surprised by some of it like. Let's talk through stacy really quick. Because that's Jennifer Jason Leigh so Jennifer. Jason Leigh is Stacey. Who who's Brad little sister and she works first of all? There's the fact that she has a job and she's a freshman and there's a part at the very beginning that I think everyone. Everyone remembers where she's waiting on. Ron John Johnson. The Guy who's Stereos the Stereo store does how to work the ladies. He sure does because he.

"Is it a granny? Is it a young kid or is it political? You'll have to go there to say, by the way will the great politicians of our time. I say generation because I was a kid when this guy was president young boy. But I remember him my Merican come to you today with a heavy heart. LBJ LBJ the movie LBJ is out and Woody Harrelson played Lyndon Baines Johnson. Woody harrelson. Cheers. Hello. He's been some pretty good movies. He's a pretty damn good act is a good, and he doesn't get the respect. He deserves because he's a Stoner, right? The guy is, but I think he quit quit smoking. Right. He gave it up or something. He was on with Bill Maher. I know that and Bill Maher him on and I think these guys were smoking buddies before and after photos, the show them like before when they were just kind of sitting together, and they showed the after photos, which one do you think is the photo of us before we got stoned and after yes, he their faces when people make pretty good faces stone, vases, bloodshot eyes, nearly slams shut. Yeah. It's pretty funny. But anyway, LBJ was directed by rob Reiner. I like rod writers director. He's a good director. So it was really kind of humanizing portrait of our thirty six president who was really involved in some pretty heavy stuff now with the K files being released couple of weeks ago. LBJ been mentioned occasions by people conspiracy theories that he was behind it when he knew about it. He was in Dallas. He was in the motorcade when the assassination happen has home state, his home state. He supposedly insisted Kennedy right in our convertible top, right? He supposedly changed the route of the last minute to go in front of the Texas depository. Yeah. Interviews. There was an interview with a woman who claims she was LBJ's side action. And she claims that LBJ said something the day before he she was saying something about those Dan Kennedy's. And he's his response was well, you have to worry about that. If tomorrow. She goes on record saying that there's a political consultant Roger stone, people may know read a whole book about it. But LBJ convincing Jay was not just behind it. But he was one of the ringleaders, and they're in the movie, there's no love lost between the two although it seemed to be a little sanitize. But but but rob Reiner was going for the real guy versus the president. It LBJ was a foul mouth Texan. And he was also very Tolman was like six four. So he was physically imposing and intimidating and a lot of people in on Capitol Hill at congress back in the day said that when LBJ wanting to get something done, you would get quote, unquote, the Johnson treatment, and the judge and treatment was he would physically back you up against the wall and hover over you. You Bill Archer? You gonna vote for the vote for this Bill Archie to do what's right for the state? You. You. Like a threatening kind of thing. But I will say what you how's it was very good in this Jennifer Jason Leigh played lady bird. She was very good at it as well. And they had Jeffrey Donovan play John Kennedy, Michael stall, David playing Robert and clearly the Kennedys and LBJ didn't get along. But they put him on the ticket because they needed the south. And remember this during the time when LBJ the K had the dream of the Civil Rights Act. He wanted to get that through fascinated and LBJ did carry that through against so much opposition from one particular man, Senator Richard Russell play by Richard J it's another great actor and Richard Russell was to the right of a clan leader. And he was a Senator he was not about black people getting any right? Whatsoever. He was all about segregation. He LBJ tight became enemies after you know, LBJ decided to carry this civil rights. But my question was what I went to see this movie. I said we'll rob Reiner put in the movie the classic phone call that LBJ made to Hager, I think his name is Joe Hager. The guy who created Hager slacks apparently LBJ had a pair of Hager slacks. He loved him so much he ordered more pants and call Joe Hager himself to have pants liver to the White House. These were release these LBJ tapes were released of other tapes this one made the rounds. You haven't heard this. It's classic president Johnson Lyndon Baines Johnson ordering some slacks or around eating when I come in from work. About a half eighty two tight noised..

"And and we'll talk more about that. And I also have some more celebrity celebrity crushes like, for instance, Channing Tatum and Ben McKenzie. Both were both had a crush on a list of Milano. I'm not surprised by that. I think a lot of people had a crush on her. I remember when she was she because she played. She played Arnold Schwarzenegger's daughter and commando when she was just a little kid. And then of course, she was on who's the boss, right? And so I just knew her as a little kid who's the boss a little kid from commando. And then I remember seeing. This movie with Reese Witherspoon and Mark Wahlberg called fear. And Elizabeth Llanos in it. And I remember watching the movie and going oh my God. Because. Listen Milano grew up and grew up big time. I mean, yes. And that was the first time that was when I saw that movie fear. I was like role I cut her a little bit on charmed in the in the mid two thousands. Yeah. Well, by that point, you know, she'd done some sort of, you know, she did like this thing called embrace of the vampire where she's half naked through the third half of the movie. And so that was that was the late ninety s when she did that when she did those movies mid to late nineties. But yeah, I remember vividly. And I had never seen him in person before. And John is very very well aware. He was like your man is over there. And I was so embarrassed you just never think you're going to run into those people. But John's was Tatyana Ali. I call him out on that one too. He had posters and everything. Soho house what a weird place you've been there. No, my brother's really into the to the scene, isn't it just kind of like a country club of sorts. Yeah. He's a cool idea. I went there because by future ex wife, Dana de Lorenzo was in town. She was staying there. And so, you know, she had to sign me in and everything because it's like exclusive there was and it was like high tea at the time when I went in we still doing high tea at the SoHo house. But yeah, it was weird. She was staying there. And we were like we hung out there for we've we went all around when you're up on the roof. And we just went through there, and they got all these weird little rooms. And art installations and stuff you can go to a room. There's a bunch of music instruments, and you just take it off the wall start playing, and we just we not my scene, man. And it's not Dana seen either Dana was in town for a wedding. And she knew someone who knew manager at the SoHo house, they got her in nice. So she was. Come over and hang out. And I'm like all right where she goes. I'm staying at the SoHo house, and I'm like, I've never been there before. But I hear it's weird. So you know, I get there. Dana comes down and meets me and. And she's like, yeah. This place. It's weird. It's not even like revolving bookcase weird excited. I can handle that. If it was just it's just I don't know. I just you know, we ate we have dinner and stuff there the food was fine. Everything was really expensive though. I imagine. And they said that we we were because I wanted to get a picture of me and Dana, and they're like you. We do not allow pictures to be taken it, so. Geez. And I'm like what? So anyway. It was fun though. I mean, we had a good time because I was hanging out with Dana Lorenzo, so that's. Also have to pluck a guitar off the wall, I didn't do any of that. No, no, no stairway. Now back Kate Bosworth, by the way. Leo dicaprio. In romeo. And Juliet, I think every girl thought I want I want that crazy kind of love because you're just starting to feel that's esmerelda, by the way. Leon. He you crush on DiCaprio in Romeo and Juliet. Was it the perfect age for her? You know what I mean? And the right character the characters that he played. But yeah, no. It was it. She is just everytime. Whenever we've mentioned like celebrity crushes. It's always Leo from specifically from that movie. Yeah. Not Titanic now. Josh holloway. From lost my first, let me crush was Newton John. I actually carried around a folder of pictures. They had printed out from the internet of him. I kissed his picture every night before I went to bed. That was really sure that one day. We would be together. I was kind of hoping with Greta it would be someone like like David Byrne for some reason. Yeah. Yeah. But, you know, well, Leo, Leo is all encompassing, man. He was. Yeah. I mean, you know, especially after twenty Janet came out. It was ridiculous. Who's the end times for it girl crushes? It was just all Leo, Jamie. King. Eddie furlong, and Terminator two. Okay. Does he have that long? Sweet skater haircut. The first one I can remember being like, ooh, that guy is so cute. Whatever happened to Edward furlong. Whatever happened to that guy. I can't imagine anything. Good because then he get loaded and release a bunch of lobsters. I didn't. I don't know why I'm thinking of this story. But I think he did I think he got loaded years ago. He he got drunk, and he went into like a like a fish place and then released a bunch of lobsters that were in tanks. Now that that definitely happened. It did and it was him. Yeah. This is go back to two thousand four. Eddie furlong had a what they call a rowdy run in with some supermarket crustaceans. See, I don't even. I mean, how do I even remember that? Why would I even well such a crazy story, actually? And that was the last time I heard about Edward furlong was when he was drunk, and he was releasing crustaceans. Do you know what the weirdest part of this article is was they listed. His his headline is a pet cemetery to star. They go to the pet cemetery to God and not t- too. I think they mentioned Terminator two and their butt heads cemetery to star Edward furlong. By the way, there's a remake of pet cemetery coming out which actually looks pretty good. Yeah. I mean, they screwed up the first day because the book is great. Sure. Yeah. I could get the scariest the scariest book Stephen king's ever read. You know that that Vicky so terrified of that book. Pet cemetery. Vic Vic Vaughn our very own. Vic Vaughn is. So terrified of that book that he when he was reading it. He couldn't keep it in the same room with him. He had to have it in a different room. He had to place it in a different roommate. He would read it. And when he would stop you would have put like in the kitchen or put someplace else where he wasn't because he didn't want to be in the same room with. I mean, it's it's freaky. It's a scary book, and they screwed up the movie, they totally screwed up the movie. I hope this one's better. I like the old man, though, the Fred Gwynne. Yeah. Fred Gwynne was the king. I mean, he was you know, Fred Gwynne rules sometimes data's better. Yeah. You got John Lithgow playing that role in the new one solid choice. Of course. I love good lift Guerrero. He's great. Speaking of rise of the planet of the apes. Let's see Hannah Simone. Michael jackson. I loved him the way you dance the way he sang. I thought he was everything. Jeremy, Scott, Cindy Lauper. Cool choice. Very inspired. Cindy lauper. I loved her when I was little she was so unique and so different. And I was obsessed with her. I thought she was so cool. Lola Kirk who the hell is Lola Kirk. I don't know who that is Lola Kirk her first celebrity crush was Jon Bon Jovi. He looked like a woman, but he was also a rockstar. There was something very acceptable about him. You could describe a lot of dudes in the eighties like that. Yeah. I saw on Jovi. They opened for the scorpions on time. Booed off the stage, really. This was before slippery when wet and all that crap came out. It was just said she's literally that was the only minor hit. He had the scorpions fans. Don't want Jon Bon Jovi now. No, they want the metal you want the Scorpius. Yeah. So he got booed off the stage. The bad boys of Berlin was at the Rosemont horizon. Sarah paulson. Brian Blume, because there's nobody more beautiful ever, Sarah Paulson, sir. Paulson's gay. So we're first her first crush was was a guy. That's interesting. That's interesting. I love Sarah Paulson, one of the one of the taller will tolerable parts of bird box for me. Oh, yeah. Kylie Riley Keough, Zac Hanson. The he was the he was the Hanson brothers with a really long hair, right? Yeah. Yeah. Here's an interesting one. How about this one Jennifer Jason Leigh? Okay. Gene wilder. Wow. That sounds about right. For Jennifer Jason Leigh. Kind of personality that Jennifer Jason Leigh has. Yeah. This growing up gene wilder me hit he made me laugh so hard. And I just thought he was the most genius hilarious, man. He was my big crush when I was little and young Frankenstein is a movie that I cannot wait to share with my son. And young gene wilder. He's unconventionally handsome. Yeah. Let's I think that's the best way to put it. Yeah. So there are some celebrity some more celebrity crushes. All right. We're going to take a break. And when we come back, we'll we'll shift gears here. I wanna talk about first of all time. I wanna talk a little bit about your podcast tell everybody about it. "Skyline studio here eighteenth stories above downtown Chicago. We're here til five o'clock. It's Monday that means my dad's gonna call in and tell a joke because it's a joke joke joke turn. Yesterday was the Daytona five hundred. So we're gonna talk about racing movies. And then now we're going to get into some actual real driving situations and talk about what pet peeves you have on the road. And I know that we can probably feel five hours. And if you have some some crazy driving stories. We would love to hear from you. So that's that's going to be one of the themes this morning driving. So three one two nine eight one seven two hundred is the phone number for talk and text. And there you go. Eric children's who normally joins us every Monday morning has an as a has is bedridden with an ankle issue. And wasn't able to get out and seeing any movies. So he's gonna not gonna be with us. So Jim Moscow ski, and I are going to handle the movie reviews, and we've got a couple of extra or other things that we're going to talk about as well as the box office and all that cool stuff every Monday morning. Jim lescaut skiing air children's joining review the new movies, and then we talk box office. And we're in new all that. It's just Eric will not be on with us this morning. So let's welcome Jim to the show. Jim welcome. Welcome back. Wait a second here. Happy to be here. All right, there you go. I didn't have didn't have the I didn't have the phone up there for a second. All right. Well, welcome back. All right. So thank you, man. You you you you want to talk a little bit about the the podcasting. What's your latest podcast? Well, yeah. So I've sporadically hosted interview show called visions, which is also the website will walk all. Won't be all plus wise, already the music wise voices, visions dot net. And I recently had the pleasure of interviewing one of my favorite character actresses a recently. So. Call the clove hitch killer, she has a small role. They also interview the director too. But then I thought I really really should try and interview Samantha Mathis because she was a very important seminal film that, you know, obviously from our conversations in the past how it affected me and your recommendation of this movie really really helped me through my teenage years, and that was pump up the volume. And you know, she said a very interesting career since then I mean, obviously pump up the volume was her breakthrough. All and boy was she member in that. But she's also been in American psycho and the American president and the thing called broken arrow. And just a lot of interesting TV shows over the years. So I was looking up to talk with close to an hour, and she could not have been nicer and had a wonderful stories, including what it's like to work with actors river, Phoenix and Christian bale and having to do an improvised dinner party scene with Larry David and richer raised on curb your enthusiasm. So man, she was just a blast to talk with and people can check out on that podcast episode over at voices, visions dot net. That's great. That's great. You've got to talk to her. Yeah. She's actress most recently killing it on billions on Showtime. Oh, yeah. Yeah. I think it's going to be the new season. She was talking about that as well. Never. I never watched the strain. But I know she was on that for a while my watch that I watched I watched the strain because it's it was gross and it had vampires in it. So of course, I watched it. There you go. All right. Well, that's pretty cool. And you also sent along your favorite performances that have not been nominated for an Oscar. Yeah. I've I've been thinking about it more and more, and you know, over the years there have just been like moments where I go. I can't believe that this performance didn't get any recognition at least from the academy. Yeah. I mean, obviously, I think credit circles. Would recognize a number of these performances, but there's certainly quite a few on my mind, especially since it's been sort of thinking about about acting a lot more on interviewing factors too. Well, there's also the the Oscars are indeed next week and their their next Sunday. I should say, and so it makes sense to talk about some of these performances that were ignored by the academy. And you know, I've mentioned this before that we've talked about actors who actors and actresses who have never been nominated for an Academy Award. And the first one that pops into my head all the time is the fact that Donald Sutherland has never been nominated for an Academy Award, which is just completely ridiculous and completely nuts. Yeah. But these are some of yours, and I think I think these are all great. Let's go through some of these great performances that were not nominated for now, we're going to get to the new movies. I I haven't seen. I only saw two of the three. Jim I didn't see happy birthday to you. So you can handle that one. But then you, and I will review the other two, but let's let's get this favorite performances not nominee for the first one that you have here is Gene Hackman in the conversation. Which is I think my favorite, Gene, Hackman performance of all time. Yeah. Yeah. Absolutely. I mean within the past few years also put up with night moves. I think he's amazing that too. But the conversation is just it remains my favorite Francis. Ford Coppola movie and all other has to do with happens performance. Just pitch. Perfect in every way. Yeah. It's amazing that you know that that year. Two movies directed by Coppola were nominated for best picture. Which is crazy. Happen very often. So you had the conversation which was nominated for best picture and godfather part two nominated for best picture, and and it won best picture. So that was a that's a pretty good year for Coppola. So yeah, I'd say so. Yeah. Robert mitchum in night of the hunter one of the creepiest and scariest performances of all time. Yeah. No. Without a doubt. I right. I mean, he's he's always great. He's always consistent always amazing screen presence. But there's just something about that character that just really gets under your skin in so many ways it's such a memorable villain for him. Yeah. No. I think it's I think it's mitchum's performance. And it's certainly certainly the creepiest of of the performances and Robert mitchum can be creepy in several different ways. But that was that the night of the hunter is just, you know, and that's the movie the basically the movie the basically ran Charles Lawton outta town on a rail because that was the only ever did you ever directed. Yeah. And and it's a it's a great film. But man, oh, man. It was not popular with people when it came out. It was very controversial. So one of my favorite actresses you have next. Here's Jennifer Jason Leigh. She was phenomenal in Georgia. She has been she's been nominated a few hours. I was going to say she's been nominated a few times, but she wasn't nominated for this. But it's a it's a it's a tremendous performance for people have not seen it. Yeah. No for sure I mean when she performs at van Morrison song pretty much in its entirety. That is one of the most powerful acting moments ever for me. I mean, I just it tears me up. Yeah. Yeah. She's great, man. She's she's always good. Always good. And you know, it's it's interesting to see where her career has gone. She said a very interesting and varied career over the years. It's always interesting to see what Jennifer Jason Leigh doesn't actually know next year is well, I mean, this one goes without saying for me, one of my favorite performances in the history of movies by my favorite actor in this, Jeff bridges and fearless. He's unbelievable in that movie. And it's it's insane. To me that that that particular performance doesn't get as much recognition as it deserves to movie that didn't get much recognition either. Yeah. I think just Rosie Perez was nominated. But I mean everybody in that movies in the screenplays phenomenal score. I mean, just that's one of those movies too. You know, I I've seen it like maybe a dozen times. It makes me ball my eyes out and a lot of it has to do with Jeff bridges and his conviction in this in this performance of it's just one of the best movies about post traumatic stress that I've ever seen. And it's a really I think it's a really beautiful movie. And it just destroys me every time the ending of that movie. Just kills me every single time. I watch it every time so great movie. Fearless. If you've not seen it, you should and. Yeah. Peter next, you got SARS garden shattered glass, one of my favorite supporting performances of all time. He is great in that movie. I think Peter swertz cards a terrific actor in general. But I think shattered glasses the the part that he has is so difficult to pull off in that movie because of the position that his character is put in. He's trying to do. What's right? He's trying to be good. But everybody's against them. When he takes over as editor of the new Republic after Hank aria who plays the editor that everybody loved and SARS guards. Character has the the unlucky position of following in his footsteps, and then finding out that that their star. Reporter their star story writer is is faking stories and Hayden Christian. He's never been better in a movie ever. And and SARS guard has seen late in the movie where he confronts Chloe. Yeah. In the in the lobby of their building, which is just phenomenal. I mean, it's one of my favorite scenes favorite scenes ever. Yeah. Same here. And that that's the more. I'm like, well, there's there's the scene that gonna play it be Kennedy. Exactly, right. That's the scene that you would play for the nomination. Okay. Jim. Hang on. All right. Yeah. All right. There you go. Jim, jim. Let's cow skis with us. And we're talking about his favorite performances that have not been nominated for an Oscar the Oscars are Sunday Sunday night, by the way, I always take the Monday morning after the Oscars off. So I will be off a week from this morning 'cause that's sort of my Super Bowl. So anyway, so we got new movies to review we're gonna get to that. Plus more of the best performances. Not now any for an Oscar. We gotta break for the news right now. And we'll return right after the news. Community colleges can play a major role in the economic vitality of a region. And that's exactly what's happening at Harper. College in Palatine, we'll have a conversation about it. With the school's president. Dr Kenneth ender at five away. I check in with the opening bell with Steve later this morning and seven twenty. Coming.

I think yeah, I think hereditary is more pure horror than some of the other films. But it was great. All right. So hereditary number eight number eight for me. Here's a movie that feels like came out last year that would be a Nile Asian annihilate comes in ninety four one hundred incredible scifi movie, it is one beautiful look at just the visuals. This movie are incredible great acting by the entire cast from Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson. Gina Rodriguez Oscar Isaac and this movie for a bit an eyelash in this movie. Makes you fucking thing. You'll think about this movie for a long time after you see it and anything this thought provoke. Thing. That's also well done and not contrived in a way. That's like being forced down your throat and obnoxious is going to get a great score for me. I thought this was wonderfully made I know a lot of people hate this movie. But also a lot of people love it. It's a very polarizing movie in that sense because there's some shit. You're like what the fuck also some of the scariest shit in any movie this year that the demon animals? Yeah. It just they're fucked cut cut into that guy with the recorded footage. It is man this movie, it makes you think you know, doesn't represent cancer. What those represented life? What does it represent? I've talked to some people in the offs about it. No, one can really agree movie. Makes you think it's gonna be on my list. It's gonna be high up there because that's just great filmmaking. Great writing I love the night elation ninety four one hundred for me. Number eight. We've already talked about this one from the audience the hate you give audience rank that at number eight Kendrick number seven number seven you to sit at a night Latian. This is one where after we came out of the theater with it. I didn't like it very. Much. And then every watched it and I loved it. I liked it way way. More than on my initial watch. I think the pacing of it was awesome, the special effects fucking credible. And I think in the nation for completely snuffed in the Oscars. Let's Saryu you talk and we'll we'll Google. No. I don't know. I mean, it's it's an interesting it it does feel as go even a little bit. I'm sorry about us for that. Go on sorry. I mean, I guess if feels like a movie to be because it's clearly all of these movies all these short. Homes are coined by their short films in their their unified by like, the the Derek to'real sensibilities the dialogue, which is just gorgeous. I just love the writing of I always have even when I was like, you know, a teenager the Hudsucker proxy was one of my favorites. Just the way people talk the superman. You know, the the John Mahoney is like the gruff newspaper editor and was as Jennifer Jason Leigh is just like, you know, she's the fast talking reporter. And she's just rattling off words, you know, half of which I didn't understand what I was thirteen. But I've just like who've rights like this. And it's like the music is great. And I think there there really is a compositional nudity to the whole thing. And so it doesn't feel like six it. It doesn't feel like an adult g of six short films that are just like Baid by six different directors that happened to share a theme active link. It's it feels like it. It all is sixty. Takes on almost the same femur. But I'm don't ask me to articulate exactly what that theme is. We still got a ways to go this podcast. So if we were to love actually BUSTER Scruggs, and if we were to think, okay, we're uncomfortable with the fact that this movie is vignettes and doesn't have everybody at the end meet each other, right? There's a lot of common themes throughout the different segments. And a lot of details that show up between the common segments. But but let's hypothesize that at the end in the stagecoach. It's you've got the stage. Coach you've got the the trapper the sort of old wilderness guy who seems to have not been part of society at all. And he's been kind of out in the wilderness. Right. You've got the sophisticated woman, but not particularly necessarily wealthy women who is part of the was Gitonga movement. The whole sort of like, American intellectual religious kind of lecture circuit kind of pre Ted talk. Thing. And she talks about the way that people ought to live. And then you've got the flamboyant guy who talks about how you shouldn't play a hand of cards. That's four another man. It's not hard to imagine that scene play out with Tom waits Zoe Kazan and bust, and I just say BUSTER Scruggs because he still inhabited the character was that actor's name here. Tim Blake Nelson Nelson, by the Yeah. way. The way and like one of the movies, most obvious sort of repetitions Tim Blake Nelson. He sits down at the at the poker table, and the the rest of the guys say that he can play only if he plays somebody else's hand. And it turns out to be the deadman's handwrite. It's the famous hand that Billy the kid was playing which is what like Ason and eat refuses to play. And they say yes to play. It's and he's like, no you can't literally. It's exactly what the Frenchman is saying at the end that nobody could compel anybody to play another man's hand. So yeah, exactly it, absolutely. Could be BUSTER Scruggs as well. They'll hook Hitchcock believe say love, actually. Well, actually, but yeah. But but they don't do that..

"All right feel like we should get our movie now. Movie. Kicking and screaming from nineteen ninety-five written and directed by twenty five year old Noah baumbach? Yep. Which is crazy. And it's one of those movies too where I graduated college the year this came out. So it was just sort of. I felt like my life except I wasn't walking around wearing tweet blazers. Right. Right, right. Talking about I went to the university of Georgia Athens. And it was great. And we just listened to REM like Michael all the time like looked around for Michael did play softball with Mike mills that's cool softball team. He doesn't remember that though. Because I met him years later a few years ago. He was like no clue no hung out. And he was nice. But anyway. Yeah. So I just graduated college. And this movie comes out about people just graduating college it's supposed to be set in. I think upstate New York. But it's like clearly, Los Angeles. It's it's that sort of worst fake jobs of ever seen on a movie like palm trees all over the place. It's supposed to be New York. Where did he go to college Vasser Vasser? Yeah. Supposed to be like Vassar assumed it was like their call it. It's supposed to be. But it was actually Oxydental in eagle rock. Oh, really yet. Feels like but also because of that like how they kind of mess with the location. I don't know it sort of feels like it could be anywhere. Well, we were trying to figure it out. We were like his suburban Chicago or but then they're talking about New York all the time, right? Like moving to Brooklyn. And then I found about the best connection. So I think it's supposed to be New York. Yeah. Okay. But it's so low, bud. You know in has like I saw back in a bunch of times one of my favorite movies back in the day. And see it all these years later. It's kind of funny to see like it was such like a student film. I know like in the best ways. It's so good though. Yeah. I like it better than a lot of his other movies. Really? Yeah. Interesting because. I mean, I love his whole like I mean, he went onto squid and the whale obviously, Margaret the wedding Greenberg. Berga and I like Francis. How did Michelle of being Greenberg, by the way? Oh, really? Yeah. Who was that? Okay. And that was the first movie should've with how they met right because he was married to j Lee who Jennifer Jason Leigh. Oh, yeah. Oh, you caller JJ. JJ lee. That's her name right daily. "You just got like a massive ulcer from the stress of of that situation. Well, he is a director. He certainly knows what he's talking about. But he said that he said you've never seen to actors more completely subservient and prostrate themselves at the feet of a director who then Tom and Nicole did. Yeah. And I believe it that it was working with Kubrick. And there were rumors already that this could be his final picture. And I think Tom and Nicole were at a place where like you said they could he could afford to take off that I'm like another. He probably. Yeah. Probably two times. Twenty at the time. It took right, right? But I could see them being just like what we'll do a thousand take Stanley. That's what you want because you're a genius. And he was like man, I've got these two. Yeah. I could so fuck with them. And I am going to I was reading or listening to something where similar tougher for Larry. Smith said something to the effect of Kubrick didn't do as many repetitive. Takes on this film as he had on other films internet because Tom and Nicole were more prepared than usual. Yeah. He said that some scenes would take two hours someone take two weeks. But, but there, you know, Kubrick had may be backed off a little bit on that sort of almost compulsive urge to like, you know, at least at least on certain scenes, anyway, right and others. He walked through the door, of course. Yeah. We talked about how on Barry Lyndon. You know, Leon batallio only had to do the vomiting seen once. You know? Right. Right. So it could be it could be something like that. Where he he just caught such a natural reaction of. Of Tom Nicole that he was like, we're never gonna do that better. Right, yvonne. But I still need you to walk through the door ninety five times, or whatever is tallies in this to right? He's the red cloaked mastermind of the ceremonies remove y'all. Exactly. Yeah. He's the one you speaks. Yeah. Yeah. Yes. For the second password and all that we'll get because God damn in. Interesting turn that movie so city policy. I love it the beginning this movie, he's got this Christmas party. And then the next thing, you know, he's he's with a sex worker shooting up speed ball. Yep. In up stairs room, and she's like, basically dead and Tom Cruise Odeen. Yeah. Revives her saying, you know, open your eyes. Okay. Mandy opener is which is kind of interesting. But got Pollick. Is so good. He's I mean, I I love Harvey towel. But I'm so happy that in an being Pollock in this film because. Yeah, Pollock just has that like Hollywood royalty. He's he's he's very charismatic. He's very like he's somebody that you know, you would feel completely comfortable like letting watch your kids or something. Yeah. But at the same time, we also has this kind of like he's played so many roles where he's like the older kind of corporate guy or whatever who like knows where all the bodies are buried, but but in a very nice way seem time. So. He such a wonderful stand in for kind of what I think Kubrick is is kind of gesturing towards which is this idea of like old money old power kind of like just like the American air Stocker see kind of he's like the perfect symbol that. Whereas Kyle, I think is a little more eccentric a little more like uncontrollable, and you know, just just wouldn't not as stable for. Yeah. Yeah. I don't think he would really read nearly as well in that in that part. Yeah. And while I'm thinking about also the other actor that was either replaced or had to leave Jennifer Jason Leigh was going play the daughter of the patient who passed away confesses her love to a Tom Cruise. You had to know that actor who played her in this. I don't know that she's done. Yeah. I'm not familiar with their either. She looked a little unhinged. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But that's just interesting. Those those two didn't make it through the production. Interesting. So going back to two Sydney Pollack and in the party and all that. Yeah. Well. I think he after the the big night out. Yeah. Which we'll talk about in greater detail. Yes. He comes back in the whole next thirty minutes, or so is him sort of trying to undo the things like he literally goes and checks in on every retraces footsteps outstay time finds out Nick Nightingale..

The 65mm Woman: Natalie Portman To Star In Sia Musical VOX LUX ...
"Mama. Mia, here we go again. Exactly. They really might go for it and sort of Italy kick the movie off like it'll even some good momentum as enters the false Hollywood Foreign Press. Is this the people that gave lady Gaga her Golden Globe, right? Ready for her second. Like if she doesn't win it, I think there's an they're gonna burn. Think she already one. There was a press release about that. I Richardson up for you at the Venice lineup. We've talked about, we talked about the trailer last week, but I'm really curious about the favorite yoga's slams most movie, but one that kinda snuck in. Don't know. It's going to be other festivals is Paul Greengrass movie twenty two July, which is, you know, just a cheery comedy about the Norwegian terror attacks of years ago. I did speak to a publicist for the movie a couple of weeks ago, and she told me that. I mean, it's her job to tell me it's good. But what she described to me was not just, you know, it wasn't ninety minutes of a terrorist attack. It's actually more about what the what, Norway did afterward to kind of come together as a community and to prosecute the guy who did it Andy. Now given that he's like a Neo, Nazi, blah, blah, like there's some, sadly, some really pertinent relevance to today. So I'm really curious about that. And then vox Lux which is another musical. I think with Natalie Portman, there should just be a musical festival. Actually Br brilliant idea which you know it stars, Natalie Portman as a pop singer. It's billed as a musical name, UB Jude laws and Jennifer, Jason Leigh and directed by Brady Corbett who we mostly know as an actor from funny games and various other things, clouds cells, Maria. But he directed in two thousand fifteen a movie called the childhood of a leader, which was really well received by some kind of sort of pretentious. Art has piece anyway, I'm very curious about that. I feel like that could be like a slow burn, kind of like dark horse contender for something. Maybe Natalie apartment, I don't know and kind of buried a little bit below the films, I guess because this playing out of competition, there's going to be preview of my brilliant friend. The HBO Elena Francais adaptation, which I'm very curious about. I'm gonna go pick a couple of like fancy director titles which got knows when we'll see them. Some of the may come out last year next year, but you've got the first film from Florin handled von Donner's Mark since the tourist, which was kind of his. Follow up to the lives of others, which was this hugely successful German film. The tourist was disaster. So it's interesting this evening could come back there. Jennifer Kesse director of the Babu has a film competition. The only woman with the film with the foam competition, which is its own thing that I'm really excited to see the film from Laszlo name. As the I think he's a Hungarian director who made on of Saul, which was incredibly Graham kind of them the Paul Greengrass style just deep dive into humid privacy of, but he's got a new film coming. So I'm intrigued to see it has to be lighted than son assault. I don't think there's an option, so we'll see what happens with that. The exciting thing about this lineup and the Toronto line which will talk about is that this year was so weird because there really was not a big awards contender that came out of Sundance. There really wasn't one the came out of can. There wasn't one of the south by southwest, really. So like it's just like, I guess we have Black Panther. That's one we think is in the best picture race. But like beyond that, like we're all of this is like new exciting. Like heaven's seen it stuff. Yes..
