"Continue our discussion with Jeff Frankie and Ryan Ricky who own too hungry Howie's franchises and Jeff is also a vice president at hungry Howie's corporate and I wanna say they have brought in lots of hungry how is food to pieces a giant chocolate chip cookie with your daily chocolate three cheese bread and Ryan what are the cross that that we got here so on the twenty sizes we have our garlic herb crossed by one of our most popular and then our signature crust of the month is smoky bacon and that's on the how about we nice nice also on this tour of family business nation we're gonna be joined by rob Elliott executive vice president of marketing for hungry Howie's pizza hungry Howie's is a family business started by Steve Jackson Steve's daughter Jennifer Jackson vice president of development for hungry Howies we hope that she would be here with us today but she was called away on urgent business so we have rob Elliot fine solo happy welcome rocked a family business nation. thank you very much all right so Jeff and Ryan many of our listeners would like to start their own family business by becoming part of a franchise tell us what attracted you about owning a franchise and why did you choose hungry Howie's. well as it was it was a long time ago and I had it was it was an excellent opportunity a lot of the other competitors were pretty saturated in the market and I could see that hungry how he's had a ton of room for development and I believe us far superior product because we make our dough fresh daily and because of the flavor crossed it made it a very unique proposition and they gave us that really what I think is an advantage nice in rhyme is you start in the family business what are some of the advice you have for the people who are listing there of the advantages of working with your parents in this case your father. I know a lot of cases I'm sure kids won't want to work with their parents but. I can actually assure you it is actually a great experience especially when you're working with somebody that has as much experience as my dad going into it I knew right off the bat I wanted to go to this is my dad is a lot of knowledge in this industry I was attracted to the house franchise from the start I love their products and really for any business I think you really need to. no the business and work in the business before you get started because I think that's a lot of what a lot of people get wrong they just. get started with the company and they know nothing about it and I had the advantage of actually working in the store for many years and getting that experience so I didn't go in completely blind Brian I want to follow up you said that you always want to work with your father out sometimes people grow up with an entrepreneur father they want to work with her father and some don't want to work with her father and sometimes the father can influence that in positive ways are negative ways such like you're from each of you guys how is it that tell us how you run you came to really want to work with your father what would you think led to that. that's a really good question what we've always had a good relationship growing up he's really mentored me in business I've learned a lot from him over the years and then like I like I already said going into it I wanted a partner who was very knowledgeable who I could really rely on from the business end of things obviously as much more of a marketing background than I do it was just a really good fit and I wanna hear from dad because dad did did you think about not pushing too hard or pushing tell tell us how you manage this thing of your son may be coming into the business takes a little bit of finesse I know you can't get too hard then you push him away yeah it it did I mean in fact he'll probably admit this that I tried to talk him out of the best long because I've you know when I first got when I first got into the business the the person that I talked to talk or try to talk me out of it for for almost an hour you know it's long hours it's seven days a week there's a you know when you're working your friends are often when you're off your friends are working and so it's it's it's a tough business but it's a rewarding business and as you build it up you can step away from the business a little bit more I truly believe in the franchise system you franchising is really a great way of getting into a business and not an understanding that those people have already made all the mistakes so that you don't have to it's structured and there's a formula there's everything is preset for you you're not learning it first hand that's why so many mom and pop businesses to fail because they don't understand the structure of an organization and going into a franchise system everything's been really thought out long time before you recipes have been made processes are put in place you know with the the way to do accounting the way to manage your employees everything's really been thought out and you know we have excellent resources which franchisees can take advantage of we have what we call the hallways learning center which are online classes for all of our franchisees and employees to take in the really quick and easy you can do on your smartphone and the only take a couple minutes I want to just note. Jeff this idea of starting a business as a franchise we have many listeners now who are interesting family business who want to start their own family business for their family legacy and I think many of them do not think about becoming a franchisee and Jeff you said it so nicely you don't need to reinvent the wheel and figure out how to manage the product and how to train new employees it's all there for you the benefit of a franchise to start a family business legacy at many levels of complexity so they've been through now after decades and decades all kinds of changes.

"I mean, they got so many hits ridiculous. You could bet what song. Oh, boy, they did a great job picking from all of their heads. I thought they did a great job picking some of the best ones. It's hard to do. I found myself singing along to a lot of them argument on it. But you think so. Yeah, I thought they did. But so many of them I just as a certain amount of time. And you can do what you can do, you know, they took they pick their first hit ever, which not everybody knows? But go ahead. I will say that. I'll give you I'll give you some quick highs and lows for me. Hi, I thought big boy coming out and singing the way you move was like one of the high points. I. Yeah. And he was Br wearing like the for. Just took me back, and I was like nostalgic. I thought that it was great in the way, they were dancing there altogether. Low point Travis Scott, there's no there's no point. Why do you have him on stage? When you're going to have to bleep out, everything he said. Like a clean version because it's a they're going to be. Yeah, you're right bleeped out half. The thank let's be honest here. Travis Scott is not big enough for the Super Bowl. Open. He's not big enough for the Super Bowl in the room. We're in. There's probably like thirty there. That's always a multiple cross prints. We're talking about. Yeah. Don't you think is known? Yeah. Trump's going to have a career. He's not in the and I'm telling you that was I agree with you. Wow. And at one point I thought is I thought your sound went out. Jason. I really did. We are watching we're dancing or singing rod Jason's house. Having a great time at the halftime show next thing. I know there's no audio and it happened again. With Sox's embarrassing for Jason. Because he was saying. Profanity improve. And whatever I agree with you. I don't I would have been happy with just big boy that point Travis Scott. He's not a known for a show that is Super Bowl is for the masses. He's not known to the masses. He's not I get it. But how we wouldn't how many times they'll have smaller guest's popped up during the show. I'm like just like imagine dragons had little lane blew away. I'm just saying I don't think he Travis Scott has reached not there yet. Good for him. You got a great agent. Because really I thought that the tribute to SpongeBob was so weird. So weird because it's like, we're watching a live. Lebron show. And then the next second were watching a cartoon, again, we're I thought had been changed. I understand. There had been a petition online at one point. Where people wanted SpongeBob to be the performance at the halftime. So that was like they were making fun of that. But again is for the masses. What percentage of people knew that? I knew that because we do for a living. I saw the story one day. Most people like what the hell is going on with SpongeBob. Kind of half paying attention. And I just thought that felt very discombobulated and very weird, and then the sound goes out. And so that to me it was like fragmented. The guy because it's a very short delay on that game. He probably like. What's happening out the whole time? On the stage. Now, I will this is I think that this is going to be controversial. I wanna know why can Adam if we want to be if we want to be family friendly, which is what I think the NFL released the statement when Jetta Jackson had nipple gate, you know, back when Justin Timberlake was performing to you. And I understand it in this in our culture boobs have been sexualize or whatever. But I as a straight woman who does find Adam LeVine to be very good looking. I didn't want to see all that much became overly sexual the end. So that I felt like it was maybe he thought he wasn't getting the reaction that he wanted. And then it was like a light went off. And he thought take off my shirt, and then start gyrating and did just to get people to go crazy, and I was like cringing. I mean, he his body was. Because when I was there. I know that's my wife Carol is one of her favourite looking guy. And I'm like he's going to take your shirt off. He's going to be skinny look like he took two rounds of stale. Girls in the room. And I don't know if you've heard it. I think he's so attractive. I me he's a very I am sexually attracted to him. Yeah. Something about. And he takes he took off his he took off his jacket, fine, whatever. And then when he took off his tank top. I just thought. Ooh. Showed in his tank top. Or Adam LeVine. They said it looked like an old man's couch or women's counter. No, it was like a light. Switch went off for all of a sudden, he's like looking deep into the camera, and like gyrating, and I can see I don't know. Why are his nipples? Okay. But not Jennifer Jackson. For the other side. He's once next year for a female performer to be able to show. I mean, that's what they do a family beach. All the guys have. No, sure. That was like the big talking for the NFL when Janet Jackson got in. Trouble was like, we are a family show. Right. Then there's an Adam LeVine. I mean, seriously, I think I saw his pupils. That's not a good. Look, megan. What do you think about maroon five halftime show? I'm sorry west. Go ahead. Yeah. JD? You hit the nail on the head. Be worse. Just white performance or anything. Ever seen in my life. Let's just hit on Travis Scott Boras. I what was he doing up there? And that was. It makes sense. Thank you. The worst performance. I mean, he sounded. All right. The music sound. Okay. And I thought the lighting light show. Started slow in the my feeling was ended except for the by basically having sex with like a ghost on stage. Besides that. I thought it started getting steam. Okay, I like, the, you know, the the gospel choir. Beautiful. It felt like it got some momentum. And then it was weird in the fireworks. Okay. Pretty cool. I didn't know it was over honest to God. I did not know it was over. I saw the fireworks. And then all of a sudden it was like then they were showing the what do they play in the dome? All of a sudden, it was like everything went pitch black. And I thought is that. That's it. Homer simpson. The come out. I know it's a set amount of time. And there's only so much. You can do. I just wasn't prepared for it to be done with you. Megan. What do you think about the halftime show? I love the halftime show. I love marine five Adam LeVine is so fine. He's like a sex dot he takes off his clothes for everything. I feel like you've been he's half naked and all its features. So it's no surprise that. He took his fellow. Okay. I guess I with that. I wasn't surprised that he did it. I just to me it felt kind of unnecessary. It was like I'm not getting what I need from the audience. He did for females is funny. My daughter she's ten he's like dad li- while he's doing that. It's like what are you feeling right now? Awkward. Oh. I don't know. One of the highlights though, it seems like everyone agrees which is rare on any performance is Gladys Knight her national anthem. We just have the last thirty seconds of it..

"And so but ourselves once again, we we needed. We wanted support at the time. Myself my partner, and our fathers. So we engage that. And so we were very positive, and you know, we in our business want the best for our business. And so. From our standpoint. It was only right. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Well, thank you very much. Our next family member is going to be Jennifer Jackson at hungry Howie's pizza. Jennifer, you picked an area of communication between family members between family members, and and other managers so communication in family business. Why did you pick that? And what did you? Discover I think there was one thing that everybody really focused on was the ways that people communicate differently in each individual family business. So it was it was enlightening to hear that everybody struggled with them. But how they dealt with them. And each manner gave other people the opportunity to kind of look at that and evaluate themselves. One of the gentlemen was having an issue with he's kind of like the mediator between the older generation and the younger generation, and helping them communicate together. And then, you know, there were other people that would say it was kind of having more of a direct line and be able to open communicate more. But still crossing those boundaries. When you don't mean to because you're the sonner the daughter and the parent, and you know, you can kind of get away with talking to them the way that you necessarily wouldn't with a particular boss. So just having lots of different communication opportunities and how to deal with them. Yeah. And that's got to be particularly interesting issue when you're trying to do something different. When you try to add new product line or or something like that? Right. Absolutely. Yeah. And everybody's going to have their own opinion. And it's kind of getting everybody to be on the same page for the good of the company and not the good of individuals while we're here at hungry Howie's tastes kitchen. And I'd love to be here. When you guys were experimenting and trying new pizzas. You want to introduce our next guest. Oh, sure. Our next guest who helped with the videos is Brian Kaufman who earlier in the show with Kaufman engineered systems and Brian your team on the video talked about succession planning in family business. Why did your team come up with this? And why is this an important issue? And what are some of your thoughts on it? The group that we had was Representative about four or five companies, and we all had the. Some differences with an experiences with the succession planning in our discussions. In one of the things that was one of the things that was important to me in the conversation was everybody understands the statistics when you transfer from the first generation to the second and third generation, and Nick and myself third generation, those are like only thirty percent make it to the second generation like eighteen percent negative third generation. It's very small and you're in the third generation. Yes. We knew this as Nick, and I became passionate about taking over our family business that our grandfather started back in nineteen forty six and one of the things we did is we did surround ourselves with with our Turney with the Bank with some consultants that really said this is the way to do it. This is the we want it to be successful. And I feel just communicated that and sharing that with the other people that I met in our group, I think it was impactful. It's one thing that was important lesson. We wanted we want to be a success in the third generation so against surrounding ourselves with the right people and making sure they're guiding us the right way of thinking that we can do it on our own. It was the right thing to do. Now when we talk about succession planning in the family business. We can talk about succession of leadership and management. That means the two of you and the third generation gradually taking over and you have essentially largely taken over the leadership of the business. There's also succession of ownership, and I think Brian you were saying earlier in our workshop that sometimes the junior generation can want ownership perhaps more quickly than the senior generation wants to give that up could you comment on that a little bit? Sure, that's. Is definitely a challenge. You wouldn't echinacea when we started this whole venture it was eleven years ago when we first approach our dads with the the desire to take over this this and we felt. So we could take on the world we're going to do this. And you know, they were definitely had the it was their goals to pass it on to the younger generation, but they weren't is willing as quick to give up their. Their stock position within the within the organization. So it was incrementally. It was a slow process making sure that we're all on the same page with the direction that was the best for the company. Stay with us through the break as we continue our tour a family business nation when we come back. Jeff, Don, and I will be sharing three practical tips to make you the world's savviest traveler and family business nation. That's all happening right here on news talk, seven sixty.

"You have what's the movie where journal Jackson husbands, Genesis Osmond that fucking move woman. Was that what is that movie called? I'm literally merging every black, ten Jackson, not in the best. Why did I get married too? That's far to have their second year. The second the where part about that movie, the where. The spite. The fact that her husband dies is she does a couple of things in that movie that I just like what the rewatch in eager. He he what he's at the job, right? She is. They had this big fight at the house or whatever about, 'cause their whole thing was you know there many died on because she had this something. I forgot what it was. "And I am hoping that one day we get to the point where black women do not constantly have to not just be good at our jobs, but then we also have to babysit people's egos because they feel bad when they lose to us Serena's gonna always win, even when she doesn't win on the court. My spotlight this week is black girls rock. So black girls rock was created by a Beverly bond in two thousand and six to celebrate black women who are trailblazers change makers or dynamos in their respective fields. It really shows importance of creating spaces celebrate black women because there's so many spaces that won't and don't. And so many spaces that tell us that we don't deserve to be celebrated, which is why black girls rock is really import. Didn't. The mission of the actual organization is to change the world by empowering black girls to lead innovate and serve and black girls. Rock Inc is a five. One c three nonprofit has been committed to enriching girls, leadership education, positive identity development. I've actually spoken at the black girls lead conference which Beverly throws every year in summer where she brings about seventy young girls for three days to talk to boss women and women who do an amazing things. And it's such a good space for these girls to see what's possible because a lot of us don't understand what's possible unless there's an example of it in front of us. Black girls rock is also multifaceted movement dedicates shift in the cultural paradigm of media music that often negatively impact women and girls. So the award show happens once a year where black girls rock honors Jeb black women who just doing dope stuff and it just happened black rock, twenty eight, teen just aired Naomi. Campbell won the black magic award. Jennifer Jackson won the rockstar ward. Judith, Jamison won the living legend award. Lena wait, was a shot caller of the year. Mary j. Blige was the star power awardee and my girl to run a Burke was community change agent. It's two hours of celebrating those of us who are breaking through in able to live the lottery wanna live and do amazing work. If you haven't watched the show bts been Riera in it. So. Catch one of those. I'm especially proud of Toronto Burke who is the woman behind the metoo movement. I've known Toronto for probably six years and seeing her on that stage dressed in all gold, looking like a trophy herself. I was like, you better come on black holes. Rack is important. It's not just an affirmation even though that affirmation we need to say over and over again, black girls rock because in the world that doesn't let us that doesn't wanna firm our value that can't be taken for granted, but just having that our two hours, which by the way was hosted by Queen Latifah this year to pause to really applaud and give people their roses while they're here. You cannot underestimate it and it's just could work being done. Beverly I, she just came out with a book. This was this year this year that I contributed to call black. Earls rock that has chapters written by different women. I'm talking like a, do Rene wrote a chapter. There's Jessica, oh, Methuselah who runs uncharted play, wrote a chapter and it's just gorgeous coffee table book that allows you to see what people who are visible and doing great work are up to in their views on life. Lupita and younger wrote a chapter. It's your pick it up. That's on Amazon Barnes and nobles anywhere where books are being sold. But basically it's a movement is the continued love and celebration and. Affirmation of black womanhood, black girlhood in in this time where it's so necessary. So showing love to black girls rock all the things. You know, the show, the nonprofit, the conference, the book, y'all do that to follow them on social media, black girls rock, I think on all social platforms and let's keep supporting each other unless keep being loudly vocal, but how dope we are. And one day, all of us will start really believing that we do rock. So randomness fan. I'm Anne soy excited to welcome, author activists and just don't person my friend Dr knell more to the show, Dr knell. Welcome you. I'm glad to be on. Let me give people your bio. So they understand bigness that is on your. That's on the side. So Darnell l Moore is head of strategy and program for US for breakthrough TV.
