This is collider videos award season show. For the next five months. We are going to be tracking the ups and downs the ins and outs and the surprises of award season on a weekly basis. We're making a lot of noise and we're really getting into it this week. We are tracking. We are going to predict the category of best actress now just because we're doing it this time doesn't mean we're gonna come back and we're Vive revisit this category because again, people were in, people are out. We're going to come back maybe a month from now a week from now too much. Do best actress again, the best actor again do best director again. But right now it is all about best actress of what category this is Perry. It is. There's there's a lot of names and it was a little difficult for me to push some of my outliers out of my top five. But I'm feeling pretty confident in my top five at this point in time, even though there's one in particular that I haven't seen that, I think there's some complications for that particular movie and I'm curious to see how it all shakes out, but feeling pretty good at this point. How about you, Jeff, best actress? I have no idea what's going on with this category. A big part of it is this movie the favourite which we're gonna talk about who gets placed where and who's the lead. So it's kind of throwing the off. I, I would say I have fifteen percent confidence in the names I'm about to drop right here could change. There's going to be a lot of ups and downs, and we'll be there to cover. I s we, yes, we absolutely will. Okay. Perry. So who was number one on your list? My number one. You guys probably know what my number one is. It's lady Gaga for a star is born, especially after that massive opening weekend that had had one, I think she deserves it outright. But after that big opening weekend, that's kind of the ideal combination that you need to continue the momentum all the way to nominations. And then I think even through to the actual ceremony, she's phenomenal in the movie. You're talking about the music which we already know she's just a knockout at or you're talking about her performance in her chemistry with Bradley Cooper. I think it would be a deserving nomination and between. Lean the critical praise and the fanfare after the movie's release, I think she's going to get it. She number one on your lynching number one on your list. Now she's not. She's number one on my list. I would say she's the only lock at this point. Like the only one I could absolutely put money on and be like she's getting in. I saw the movie again, this weekend. It blew me away. I just think it's so fantastic. And I know that it had the performance has its critics because the, oh, well, she's just sort of playing ourself, you know, but I didn't see that up there. I thought she was wonderful and I think she can't be denied this year. Okay. Okay. Full disclosure. She's number two on my list. Okay. So she's very, very, very, very close to the top. I'd love her in this movie. I loved the movie itself. You know, my only criticism against the film is that it didn't really surprise me. I talked about the self swear, you know it was. It was a star is born a story that's been told officially three other times that I knew where it was going, and that's where it went, and but it's still extremely well made very, very. Entertaining. The music is great. The chemistry is great, and I agree. I mean, lady Gaga she played herself, not really, but she's playing a pop star. I mean, it's not like she's pulling Shirley's Farren in monster year. No, but she's doing that, but I don't know. She wasn't. She's great. She's gonna get nominated. She's absolutely there's someone who is more deserving. There are someone who's more deserving because I think when it comes to mind, number one, this is an actress who has never won an Oscar and damn, that'll I know where you're going and wild. The movie itself might not be as commercially accessible and uplifting. Well, not maybe uplifting, but commercially acceptable as a star is born. This is an actress who is way way, way, way, way overdue for not just the nomination, but a win, and that is Glenn Close for the wife. Now this movie is about a law Mary couple. The husband played by Jonathan Pryce UIs not exactly. You know a a loyal husband and you know, it's sort of comes to a head in a climax that it, it's basically going to be her for your consideration clip when they show her and they're reading off the nominations, the night of the Oscars on February twenty. Fourth length hosts, I feel like she's not only the top and an absolute block for nomination, but I think she is the front runner to win, not just because this is a great great performance for her, but also because it's going to be one of those sort of light career Oscars, where it's go into, she's going to win. This is a good conversation. You know? Did you see that film? I haven't seen it yet. I haven't seen it either. Okay. So I did and I want to see it. I almost went to see a couple of weeks ago and I think I miss. I don't know if it's still in theaters anymore, so I hope I get the screener hookup, but that said I've been hearing about this performance for over a year, right? Because debuted at the festivals last people or if it was going to come out last year. Like I just don't know that the. Film has the traction, and I keep hearing as good as she is in the film. I keep hearing the Jonathan Pryce kind of mattress or every step of the way and coming away thinking that he's the more impressive of the two. I feel like I heard the same things about Glenn Close with Albert knobs, and I think that this year is just more competitive and. While I, she could get a nomination. I don't know that I see the win. And as of right now I have her on the outside looking in. I have earned my honorable mentions top five. He's not, but only seen the movie. She's my number two and actually thinking of it's like you made the point. And then I almost went the opposite way for different reason where I think you would just said, you know you, you could see her getting the nomination, but not the win and because it doesn't have have traction. I think that the harder thing for Glenn Close is going to be securing that nomination. And if she gets that nomination, then we're gonna wind up seeing a resurgence and the potential for a major upset because we all I mean, it happens every single year. You have a movie that pops really early. Everyone gets super psyched about it. And then the inevitable backlash creeps in with a star is born. I think that said that's a real possibility. And let's say Gaga anglin coz close get the nominations. There's a chance that that's when we can see even more. People talking about the wife and overturning the lock. You're doing something very interesting right now, which is the in phase two, which is the post nomination phase. It's anyone's game that there is. There was a massive backlash was at now. I would say one of the one of the most. I would say, notorious backlashes in recent Oscar history was against LA La Land because for from September after Venice, telluride and Toronto that movie for five straight months was the front runner to win best picture. And then after the nominations, there was a backlash, I think it was after one, seven, Golden Globes. There was a backlash to the moon, and there's a backlash coming for a star is born same as as I man, you know, Rome as kind of film I think is untouchable. He's going to be a backlash held back home of a, we'll talk about, okay, talk about that. So so Perry, you and I had the same number one and number two, they're flips, but we all greet that Gaca is into top couple number one for built our number twos or both out there on the table. But what's your number two? Mine is actually elites after for Roma. Okay. Go ahead. I. Again, I wasn't personally blown away by her, but I think that a lot of people really were, and I think that she's going to become a like a Qasr celeb- this season. And I, I think that the movie is just strong enough where she's going to get it. All right, Perry, she is my number five, she's number. I do think at this point in time she has a chance of getting in. It's a little bit on the cusp also because we haven't yet hit the point where Roma has come out and kind of wowed. The audience is, and you know, we don't really know what Netflix is even going to do with this movie. I mean, yeah, we know it's getting a Netflix released, but how wide is it really going to go? And that is key to the momentum of performance like that needs to actually breakthrough. But you know when we do these predictions, it isn't necessarily, oh, these are my favorite performances rank. These are what I think are going to get nomination. And in the case of I have to learn to say, you leads appreciate. I think that is. One of those Oscar nomination narratives that are just very appealing where the excitement of a newcomer breaking through. And that's not to say that that's the only reason she's going to get the nomination really in my personal opinion, I think she is very deserving. So I'm rooting for newcomers to. The only backlash backlash, the only the Barrett against elites is she's not an actress. This is a first movie and she's cheats. She herself. I'm not an actress, so yet it's a great performance and she's in my honorable mention, but the the two things against the film that it's her first. So they going to is the kademi going to honor her. I mean, it's deserving she is. They might say, well, you know, I mean there have been other actors who've been really light like paying their dues and work in and doing all this great work. I'm gonna after this. I'm gonna play you David Spade comedy bit about this phenomenon. Okay. And how it like Jennifer Hudson spends her whole life training to be a singer comes up, runner up in American idol, whatever waltzes over to acting wins and us ker camera, sit obey fright dominated like they love their newcomers and look. I mean, lady Gaga technically is a new. Okay. She's Jennifer Hudson of two thousand eighteen. You may be saying that they sort of fill the same slugged. Okay. I'm not discounting deletes which is not on your list. She's a my honorable Mitch because she it is listen. I think it is extraordinarily movie and it is a strong front runner next to like stars born. And now now that I have seen green book, I could save absolute sure Jeff, you're absolutely right and all the other considerations we had about the show. It is a terrific crowd pleasing field. Good, very, very deep heartfelt funny movie. It really has it all. That's me right now. Ours born green book and Roma role discounting. There was great. Picture, but it was director by, but yeah, Lisa, she's a runner. You're number three light Parag number three. All right. My number three is Melissa McCarthy for? Can you ever forgive me? So speaking of great Oscar nomination stories, here's a transformative performance for Melissa McCarthy. Everybody loves rooting for those kinds of things, and it's another case where she is deserving. She is a great. She's a great actress across the board, and I know that she fell into a trap of doing the same types of comedic performances over and over. A lot of those movies make a lot of money so that she has a lot of fans for that kind of stuff there. But I very rarely think those movies are on her level and really give her the opportunity to show everybody what she's capable of. Then all of a sudden you get a movie like, can you ever forgive me? And that's it. That's the one. And I just want to see that one in the conversation. I mean, we're definitely going to be talking about it in other category. Stories as well. But as one of very few female directors who are within arm's reach, to an extent for that best director nomination, I just want to hear more people talking about this. So come released. I'm curious to see what the responses jump in because she is also mind number three, most Carthy for can you ever forgive me transform a performance, not a complete shocking transformation because I thought she was great in Saint Vincent to which which was a little more on the comedic side, but it was more of a serious role as well. But this movie and I was like, thank goodness. This movie came out or started screening at film festivals within days of happy time, murders bombing at the box office. That movie was awful and just was not a good showcase for most of McCarthy's talents at all. This one is and think about Kan. forgive me is how how the movie itself just really captures the feeling of loneliness of being passed over being left behind of a woman who was desperate to to survive in one thousand nine hundred eighty s. New York. She's a one time bestseller who resorts to forging old letters to make a living in all catches up with their and Richard E grant is equally strong as her lonely best friend, but I've loved this movie. I love her in this role. I think she's fantastic, absolutely deserving, and I think she's a lock to get nominated, Jeff. Can you guys ever forgive me for having not seen this movie? Come on this in Toronto. I'm going to see later this week or early next week and I can't wait to weigh in. Then I do have Melissa McCarthy in my predictions because I have heard that she is absolutely fantastic. I ever in the five slot right now. If you know, once I see the film, maybe she creeps up to the two or three slot. I'm a big fan of hers as you said like insane, Vincent, we saw that film was more of a comedy, but her role was more dramatic in it. I think she's a wonderful actress and yeah, I can't wait to see this film. Okay. Well, what's your number three minute? Number three is Felicity Jones on the basis of sex. We'll cave wildcard. Yeah, I think you. Very, very probable. Go ahead. You know she she was nominated for the Stephen hawking film, right? The theory Jefferson did she shouldn't win though right now. Okay, so, but I think that sort of shows that she has won the respect of her peers in the kademi. I think it's just been a huge year for Ruth Bader Ginsburg obviously with the RPG doc being so successful, and then just all the crap with cavenaugh and the supreme court like people want to root for the good supreme court Justice. And I think there's going to be a lot of goodwill towards this film. I think if any female directed film cracks the best picture lineup, it's most likely to be on the basis of sex two points. Okay. Well, that is a very, very, okay. Your number four Perry. Well, that one's not in my list, but in my little honorable mention section, I think that's one of the ones where even though I have movies on this list that I haven't seen yet, I think because I've seen so little and heard. So few reactions because has that screened at any festival, let's not yet. Man hasn't debut. It's like when I think about that movie and like Mary Queen of Scots, I just haven't been able to embrace it to the point where I'm confident and putting it on my list. Again, at the beginning, I'm fifteen percent. They are quiz Scott's. I mean, either either social runs Margot, Robbie could end up as search. Ronin is on my little outlier list right now, but for my number four, this Ivan yet again, another movie that I haven't seen, but I'm confident is going to be in the conversation quite a bit. It's a vehicle men for the favorite I have. I've heard wonderful things about three big performance in performances in this movie. The only thing that I think might be working against her is this whole conversation about who belongs in what category and people doubling up in certain categories and just a little confusion that could maybe misdirect where to target your votes. And I think that could wind up hurting her. But if she is as much of a standout in the movie, as I've heard then I think Libya Coleman has a real shot and getting the nomination. I liked the favourite ally. I think it's a, it's sort of like a sort of Victorian all About Eve. I've liked the dialogue. I loved the. Performances. I thought Rachel vice and stonework terrific into movie Olivia Colman as well. Not on my list, Jeff. I agree that there's a lot of confusion about where to position her. I think it would be crazy for her to run for lead because I think if she went supporting, she'd have a much better chance. Although that said all the real vipers, this season are in supporting Amy Adams for vice. Clarify for I man like there's that's going to be a competitive category this year. I have her on the outside looking in the top name and honorable mention my number six. I just I, I liked the favourite, but I hated the first half of the film. It took while to grow on me almost like phantom thread so that I, I don't have her on on my top. Five. You want my number four. That's your number four. Number four is Davis for widows? Yeah, I again, I thought she was very good. I don't know that I pencil her in a walk by any stretch, but I think that people are really going to like this movie. I think it's going to perform well. Commercially reviews are pretty strong like I didn't love the movie, but it's a solid b plus to me like I loved it. It's good. Yeah, it's very good. So yeah, I think just like that support for the film overall and obviously viola Davis is loved by her peers. Yeah, I think she gets into I create. She's on. She's number four on my list to. I loved the film. It felt. You know, I've described widows as a female heat without the side of the cops. It's just about the robbers and that may take the heat aspect out of it. But I think the what I was trying to say about about what is it feels very much like Michael Mann type of direction, even though it's directed by Steve McQueen whose twelve years a slave won best picture. I think viola Davis. This is this is an ensemble film, but she is the pin of the movie. She is the bolt that holds it all together, and it is an exceptional movie, exceptionally written, exceptionally directed powerfully acted by everyone, but she is the strongest and I think that she is going to get nominee not on my list. I think it's a reasonable prediction to make, but having seen widows and one of my main criticisms of it was it was almost going back and forth between being a rousing commercial heist movie. But then also having a lot of, you know, like darker more. More thematically meaningful threads to it, and I kept seeing the two things where they would work well, but then all of a sudden they would be at odds with each other, and I didn't really know what to make of it. And I think that confusion might make the overall label for widows more commercially viable than it is a movie that's going to have the legs. It needs to get into the Oscar conversation. And for that reason, I think she might get bummed out of it. And I think the same might be true for someone who I thought gives a great supporting performance and Elizabeth DeBakey, which loved her Schnitt guests. The better shot. I getting nominee interest supporting, maybe vile. Even though I do think that file it will make the cuts, don't a formula. Nine number four was living Coleman. 'cause I did my number five of mine. Who is your five was Ulitsa. Okay. My number five one, the new name now I number five. You really don't mind. Cheated. We slam on the death by my number five, you really went home and I'm five is wanna know what my number five is guess. Can you guess who's number five, who's my number five now. Now I number five. I actually had it down on Goalby goal derby dot com. Where where film experts LIZA pundits give their picks and Perry is now a new member get me up there. Yeah, you should actually be on the single, but my number five here it is the suspense building up the suspense here, suspense and intensity for my number five with. Could it be well here it is Toni Collette for heredity that wow, now that movie was very polarizing. You have people who love it. You have people who hate it. It is disturbing unnerving film that does not end on a high note whatsoever, but there is no denying the power, the commitment of Toni Collette. It is to performance of her career. She was going to get Oscar nominated for the first time since she was nominated for supporting actress for nine hundred ninety nine the six cents. Also a horror movie. Her performance in this film is absolutely it is. Emotionally grueling all over the place. It is just an absolutely superb toward the force performance. And I think that she will get recognized having said that my also ran for number five because I think these could easily flip by my also Raffarin number five is a film that came out early in the year and it did very well. It's an original film. It rocked my world when I saw it in south by southwest film festival, but go ahead. Is it a quiet place? It is a quiet place. Yes, it is. This is what I love. Mansa them with one wants and easily be Emily blunt or Toni Collette. They're both great ends are blizzard ballsy predictions only blunt is so Dame good in a quiet place. The scene in the bathtub once they're both her Antoni header both. Excellent. I hope they both get in, but if you're talking about like, let's say they both get in. Okay. Now we got Tony Colette Emily, blunt, and and Glenn Close three of the five slots taken from movies that were released before September that would blow me away. Well, I mean, look, twenty collect. I mean, listen, people might give a quiet place to because it's, oh, it's a hard movie. Oh, it's a successful Hollywood film. And first of all, it wasn't like a big budget Hollywood film. It was an original movie. I just think it's it was dare bowl film. I think you've made a good argument for it man's really like she was so phenomenon. I'm watching apply place going like, you know, with. With those actors, you know, chock Khorasan ski, Emily, blunt and Millicent. Simmons. The daughter? Yeah. What they were able to do with hardly any dialogue whatsoever way to cats and alive in the conversation acting like your in a quiet place like so it came out in March. So what if it's a horror movie where I'm willing to it's so every the year, for sure what a quiet place between Emily blunt and Toni Collette. I think they're both kind of long shots and not that I think. Deserving, but between the two, if one of them snags the nomination, I do think it's Tony collegue also because Emily blunt your mind goes to the who knows what's going to happen with Mary Poppins ever. Nobody knows that good, but we have already heard that Disney could be mounting an awards campaign for that. Maybe. So if she winds up in this category for that reason, it completely obliterates quiet places. Chances where I'm watching a quiet place though, is in the screenplay category. We'll talk about that upcoming episode when we dive into the coming up for your legs before we do our master list here. I wanted to just run down some other names since you're since you're throwing. I want to. I forgot. Emily blunt for Mary Poppins. Yes, Julia Roberts Ben is back is supposed to be really good. I didn't see that did sit good in the film, but not a real contender in your. I think your million. I've loved Dennis back, but I mean, and it's definitely. I mean, Julia cheese. She doesn't really make a whole lot of movies these days. I mean, ever since she won the issue in the congress and that six to ten range over India, six to ten, six tench Hilary Hilary swank what we had. No, I really liked what we had that movie is not very good, but it's an Oscar contender is. Okay, good stuff. Go ahead, social Ronin for American Scott Tong, but he knows sausage. Nicole Kidman for destroyer. She was very good at, but I don't know about the reaction to the film overall. She's really good in that, but I think that's one of those movies where it's like her performance and the rest of the movie comes in just behind it. And also, you know, I wouldn't really say it's the most appealing movie ever. It's very tough watch. And that might make it even more Charlene's in monster. Yes, it's a transformative role. It's a film. I love the film. I saw a, I've thought it was great, but I think that Nicole Kidman it's going to get more attention for supporting yellow buoy sport you race Joanna Kulik for Cold War. I'm seeing that tomorrow night or you know. Yes, tonight I'm seeing tonight and Rosamund pike for all right. I'm getting her here that they're both excellent constants, woo for crazy, which Asians could be in the conversation nest actress now think so. I'll okay. I got one more Natalie Portman for Vauxhall. I'm surprised it. Go ahead. Well, I don't know about vox locks because I heard very slowly. Coming out of tiff for that one. But this is more I think their their their major, long shots. But these are two that I'm genuinely rooting for one is cure nightly in Colette. I'll try. Try. It kinda got over. It's been in the conversation for a little while now because it didn't. I debut a tiff. I think it premiered at Sundance, but she's so good. And that's a great example of someone who takes what's on the page and just Braves so much life and passionate that the Colette energy is just infectious and everything that she's learning about herself along the way and embracing and celebrating. It really got to me. The other one I have here is Charlene, Darren entirely yet another one that kind of got completely overlooked when it came out, but that's another movie. That's got a really interesting character journey and really could only be handled by someone as as capable and his exceptional as Charlie's there. And so I wish that a little more seems to have faded from the company. In October, not not April or whenever out because it was too early. And I feel like Jason Reitman also has frontline are coming out also direct the Tully. I think they've wanted to put more weight. He wanted to put more weight behind that. Only Jennifer, Lawrence heads and buzz Herod's barrow which I still think is a crazy crazy the a lot, but that that's a long shot. All right. So let's talk about, let's solidify, should we shall we name our top five individually before we? Okay. Yes, you're had lady Gaga. You'll eat Saporito Felicity Jones viola Davis. Melissa McCarthy. Okay, para my number one is lady Gaga I star is born. Then I have Glenn Close for the wife Melissa McCarthy for can you ever forgive me a Libya Coleman for the favourite? My number five is alita appereciation for Roma. Okay. By top-five Glenn Close for the wife lady Gaga for stars, born Melissa McCarthy for can you ever forgive me? Viola Davis for widows, and and they tie for fifth place just because you know, it's it's only October. So I'm going to say. Toni Collette for hereditary Emily blunt for a quiet place. So now we gotta come out with our master list as of now. And again, ladies and gentlemen, berko went to come back to best actress and this category completely completely different, but five different nominees. When we do this category again, and we will buffer now become one is blend closed because she has to number one votes from you. Remember too is lady Gaga exactly. Number three appears to be both. It's Melissa McCarthy because she has to number three votes. Number four is a number four file a Davis because she has to number four vote before votes. Then we're looking at Felicity Jones, Livia Coleman. And then you're, you're okay. Well, city Jones. You know, we, we'll revisit this from the trail, went from the footage I've seen for for for basis of sex. You know, Ruth beta Ginsburg was not showy sort of like out there like, you know, like she's not Gary, Gary Oldman in darkest hour. Okay. And I think that's part of the problem with like Ryan Gosling and I man, it's not a showy role, so I don't know for sure the Felicity wildcard, so it's a little less than a wildcard, but it's not exactly sure. Libya Coleman or Libya Coleman because we should. We both had her. No, I didn't have. Mentioned list. Okay. Okay. Okay. Well, let me ask you this before, calm in is supporting that. So that's exactly what I wanted to ask for it. Rachel vice and Emma stone and support. No. Estonians seems like the bigger front runner for that movie in supporting, which I think would knock Bolivia Coleman out and into this gory. See Emma stone is a lead. The lead in that role. And so as Rachel vice for that matter, I think Libya called is supporting actress, gives us Toni Collette that gives us or is there or is there another name do? We think because I think Emily blunt in twenty a real long shots. I don't. I mean, listen again, nightly. I think care nightly Colette is actually more likely than than those two. No, I just I just hereditary. You watch you watch the range of Toni Collette in that movie. I mean, you know, there are a couple of points FM what she actually is very, very lively and humorous. And then you know, she goes right to the next scene where she's just absolutely devastating and heartbreaking. I mean the piercing shriek what she sees see, that's that's it's a little campy times goes a little too far and becomes a little silly. What do you think parents Perry, we're, we're talking about predictions here and quality of the movie aside, if. We're, we're talking about who's going to land that last spot. I just don't think that Toni Collette is is the one who's going to do it. It's a very divisive movie. It's also a movie that came out earlier in the year, and we talk about my other number five. All visiting the same conversation. Supporting ten movie was a beloved smash hit, but still the things working almost seems like she could go supporting to, you know what? Okay, revelation, a pithy. This is what's going to happen. Why? Because this is going to push Emily blunt for lead for Mary Poppins returns and paramount, and going to push Emily buff for supporting for for everybody to support those get. And both both the performance get nominate just like Alpa chino. He was nominated for supporting active foregoing, Gary Ross. He was nominated for lead actor for for a woman and he went for samples.
