"The NTSB the national transportation safety board Jennifer Harman D. as their spokesperson assigned to talk to the media about the helicopter crash that took the lives of Kobe Bryant and eight others as she said that'll be it they're gonna go back after they finish their on scene investigation and then go work on all the evidence and kind of their findings that's good the actual big report could take twelve to eighteen months and ten days of putting a report but don't be findings in it they they there's there's one question why did he suddenly turn around so sharply and then died down yeah that's that's the only came up from the crowd of reporters right there's there's nothing else once you get the answer to that then you know why it happened are you turned around because he wanted to go back okay east get the Burbank get out of this fog bank and dead did he did he get disoriented was there some kind of equipment failure doesn't seem to be that there was an equipment failure now seems like this was his decision to go down and maybe he did know what he was doing maybe panicked he certainly could see he tried to go up they they repeated he tried to go out be wanted to get above a cloud bank it was like the fight down near ground level and then there was a thick cloud bank that you're definitely couldn't see anything any so you wanted to get above that so you got a process is you can either go above like the airplanes do or you can call way low where visibility sometimes can be better according to what I saw this morning it was a TMZ report he barely when he went up he barely cleared a mountain top by a hundred feet and then after that he decided to turn around I so but wait what I didn't know is that when you take a private plane or a private helicopter you're on your own it's not governed by the same FAA rules no what we learned here in the helicopter not like commercial airliners right nope terrain awareness warnings each of you took a private jet okay why imagine if you bought a decent car in recent years what do you get this party your system you get a big beep beep right if if somebody breaks in front of you on the freeway if you get too close beep beep beep in the newer cars yes what do you see on commercials somebody is about to crash and suddenly the car stopped as a warning system right because that's what car companies are selling the warning system if you're if you're in in a lane I guy had one car recently where every time I drifted an inch out of the lane on the lane departure warning system so there's a lot of cars with a lot of these warning systems the backup system now I had a car that I rented after I got I got got hit you go backwards beep beep it stops your car if you think you're going to hit something this helicopter didn't have any of that no it didn't have a cockpit voice recorder and it didn't have a data recorder data recorder and it didn't have Tawes which again is the terrain awareness warning system that does it it sound like we're nineteen fifty five here I guess you spend that much of this is built in nineteen ninety one so would had probably been upgraded for those things I guess well maybe no very few helicopters have my guess I I I guess I mean they can't be that much money I but it you're gonna you're you're you're flying a helicopter in a in a really mountains region it's like need seat belts and there's there's you know there's areas that are prone to fog I find all that amazing I thought that this whole I thought all air travel is highly regulated and that there's a lot of requirements before you go up in the air thank you find out when this happens then there really aren't that many and I have to clear with the airport for your flight plan I guess and make sure you take off is okay in the air spaces okay but these other things you're talking about apparently not in the right out of the requirement and then they said they asked when he asked for special visual fought flight rules that's right so he's gonna fly under a thousand feet and he doesn't have more than a mile in his judgment of visibility is that unusual center usual to ask in yet although it's very usual she said it was usually and and and to get approved for that yet so it's like Hey go ahead if you want to take that risk they're not falling out of the sky you don't hear helicopter re did I know it's just I did well I thought I would have thought the reason we don't hear that helicopters falling out of the sky is because there was a lot of ice a lot of rules about this that deserves it turn right it works until the day doesn't work now if you told me Hey do you want to take a ride and we're gonna go you know thousand feet to log back into a fog bank where it looks like milk and the pilot possibly could be disoriented and you don't have a terrain warning system I think you have no warning system but anything and there's no recording of it would you say band I'd love to take that right that sounds like a great idea but that's that's what all these people these poor people who went on a helicopter that day that's what they inadvertently signed up for and I think they were not aware of all those things you just mentioned now and I was sitting right before this news conference started I asked the question yesterday was this their normal flight path against Marin county to this basketball academy up in the valley and then I found out the answer it was not they went on Saturday and they did sort of cut over from Orange County towards Calabasas but what they did Sunday is the follow the free weights for better visibility right did you see that I think it is one nine five yeah had a great enigmatic a graph of previous tracks is right that's why I got that from this yeah right you can see they bank left and went right up you know towards the western part of the valley yes it was on Sunday they went kinda straight down the middle then turn left after they got up in the alley so the pilot must have known that a lot of fog along the coast that's what I'm thinking so he went with a different flight idea eating he didn't he didn't go along the coast which he they had a couple of times they didn't get they split the difference in the middle which were you go a little west a little east of LA acts any travel north from there that was kind of a split the difference route but they didn't get into trouble you know and then when they got to Burbank that's when they ask for the special visual flight rules when they got that clearance to do that but your state is up to the judgment of the pilot sure you know is he is he aggressive AZ cautious does he feel pressure depending on the kind of clientele east wind around with my I again not knowing that you're gonna end up in the middle of all white soup I can cause disorientation and that there's gonna be no warnings to help you out when you lay it out like that none of us would go anywhere near an end right she said they were about twenty three hundred feet up last communication and the descent from there was two thousand feet a minute it's a sharp descent yeah yeah and then there was a hard left belt and then boom for everybody you standing around go why did this happen how could this happen but this isn't this a why it happens because you you you stack up so many risk factors against you once in awhile you lose you know if you go just the chance you take well in a go skateboarding down the forty five maybe a few times make it but you don't often enough you're gonna lose think about what you just said that the cars a lot of them don't have all those things you just mentioned there out there the public a bald tires like all sorts of problems they could slam into a wall because the brakes don't worker yeah no I there's there's risk in anything but you might think wealthier people would make sure that this at after the fact it does seem preposterous right I don't know if this is going to lead to a call to make this mandatory with the toss them in the voice recorder and the data reclaimed made calls before the national transit board said they did it in the FAA noticed it now because we had a big celebrity died is that change things were when ordinary people died doesn't we got more coming up Johnny can't KFI Dever mark as the LA county fire crews have responded to reports of a
