"Right? I mean, there's lots of people that buy guns. There's tons of guns in the country. People don't behave this way. Crazy people behave this way. And you know, as a kid, I remember. The slogan or the catch phrase, people don't kill people, or guns don't kill people, people kill people. And it made sense to me as a little kid. And there was always debate over that, and there's still debate over it. And here we are. I don't know. 35, 40 years later, from the first time I've heard those words. And still, we're still in the same place, where we are constantly we use this term gun violence, as if it's a real thing, as if there are violent guns, and every time it happens, we bring up this term again. And we just stick with the word and we allow it to become part of our daily lexicon gun violence. Yet, there's a phenomena, a pandemic, an epidemic of knifings of stabbings in London, all over Europe. It's the popular way to get people amongst many of the immigrants coming into that area. Like the people who've taken over Paris, it was like a homeless encampment under the Eiffel Tower. It's the same thing happened in Germany. And it's fascinating how that didn't happen. Germany 30 years ago, it didn't have this knifing problem. London didn't have this knifing problem. People weren't getting knifed all over the place. But it's on the rise, and it's because that's just the weapon of choice and the way these guys do their thing. It's not knife violence. It's those crazy people who have a knife in their possession. And I think this is not a distinction without a difference. This is really important. We have to really figure out how to help people and stop people that are crazy. I'm a proponent and good thing I'm not running for president. But I think if people are criminally insane, we should have a place for those people. And I'm pretty sure there's people that will debate me and send me all sorts of stuff and I'll get a lot of hate for saying this, but people have always criticized the United States for being one of those places where we have more people incarcerated than most other countries. And I would always argue, I think it's because we have a more effective system of justice. And because at one point, we had these places called penitentiaries or homes for the criminally insane. Because there is a population of people. Just like dogs. Most people see dogs and they love dogs, and they're just the most adorable, most loyal animal you could ever find. But there are some dogs that lose it for whatever reason. And not that they're trained to that that actually do. Family dogs that have been in the family forever. And when they get older, they just flip out and attack somebody in the family and mall and wear. It doesn't happen a lot but it happens. And there's a fate for animals like that. And I don't see humans that behave that way any different. I really don't. I think that if you are a person, whether it's acting children or in this case, a veteran of the armed service who couldn't hang in the army and came out and couldn't find the help he needed. I would hope he finds the help he needs. I hope there's medication for him. I hope this therapy. I hope their support. But if there isn't, then there needs to be a place for a person like this. Otherwise, the place that he's going to find is the place that he's at right now. And there's reports that the hero cop sprinted towards the shooter with the rifle to take him out. Kudos to the cop who did that. And there's some reports out about that as well that the Allen Texas cop who put the end to this by killing the shooter or as in the words of his chief who said he identified the shooter, neutralize the shooter neutralize the threat. Which I thought was the way it's got to be. That he really sprinted towards this rifle and everybody else was running away. And I think that's the job and that's what he signed up for and we're grateful for heroes like that. But I want to continue our discussion on mental health because veterans are important to us. I think we owe them a debt of gratitude and insomuch as helping them and acknowledging them and honoring them. We have to support them when it comes to these issues of mental health. And straight ahead, I want to talk to Gary Sinise, who's been an advocate for veterans since you saw him as lieutenant Dan in Forrest Gump. He's been excellent on this issue and he's also going to be at the Memorial Day parade in D.C. honoring veterans as well and the fallen. So we're going to chat with him a little bit straight ahead. He gave the first interracial kiss on television like back in the 60s. And I don't, I think she knew how pivotal hero was, but as a young girl watching her, it was just awesome to see. And I love Star Trek because it was so many different cultures. Yeah. And then they put it together and they show that we as a country could get along and can work together with different cultures and respect. And people also hit a certain point where you can either look older or look like you've had work. That's part of people just choose. You're right. Because it is like you could be the young ingenue or her mother, but that middle area is like a wasteland of nothing. That's weird. But yeah, it's, again, it's like, do I look like I had something done to the point that people can kind of tell why I look older? And there's just not much in between. But honestly, she looks amazing and that does make me more inclined to listen. Yeah, my God, she has money. "And the thing is, you can sit here, you can have all these lovely weddings and spend all this money. That means nothing in the end. In the end, the truth always comes out. And we just wish them well, because this is a mess. Get it together, be out. Okay, Sylvester Stallone is mad. He is punching back at rocky producer, Irvin Winkler over the franchise spin off Draco. Now, sly has fought for years to get the rights back to his famous character. In a now deleted Instagram post, he wrote, I never wanted rocky's characters to be explored by these parasites. Sly also called out his longtime friend, Dolph Lundgren, who plays Draco for going behind his back. So this is a spin off, he doesn't know anything about it. You know, I mean, first of all, the history of rocky is that when he first started, he was unknown, nobody knew him. The producer Irving took a risk and made the movie he has produced all the movies, but I didn't know Stallone never had any type of, he didn't have any ownership. Right. So rightfully, you know, the Winkler family can do this. They have all rights. He's been fighting to try to get at least some rights back for his children. I mean, you think rocky you think I Stallone? Yeah. You just do. It's really, I think, can be really tricky when you create an iconic character like this and you get replaced without being told. Just because they didn't have to tell him, doesn't mean it's the classiest thing to do because they make it. And it's got to be painful, but I also know on the flip side, this said does Garner a lot of visibility for Sylvester. People are going to be interested in him more than ever right now. That sometimes a byproduct of just a show being made that you helped create the original and you're not a part of the spin off. True. But they're completely insane not to want his support. If he stands up and says nobody watched this show, people, I think, will get behind those die hard, you know, rocky fans. But what about his friend Dolph? He wrote that. The original Draco for him put him in the original movie. This was what made him a star. And according to slot, he said, we were friends. He didn't imagine he'd been calling him, slots don't been calling Dolph going, hey, what's happening? He don't say nothing. 'cause he knew that slide we get mad and probably stop. I'm just assuming it probably stopped the project. But this is the problem in this industry. It's like, you think you have friends but when it comes to business, all of a sudden now is bitch. But I will say and make sure you could probably speak to this, but there are business friends and there are real friends and sometimes those lines blur, but I always keep on putting in a movie. I mean, and because I love Jennifer Garner, I follow her. She's just amazing. I think that because I think she's so incredible and amazing, I think that she wants him to be living his best life. I think she's that good of a person. She wants the father of her children to be happy as can be because when he shows up to spend time with his kids, he's in a great place. And Jennifer Lawrence is perfect. So I think she does feel that he wants his happiness. The only thing though. What? 'cause I'm like, oh, I'm quiet. Remember you were a kid and you would go to somebody else's house and then the parents would call your parents and say, oh my God, he's so nice. He helped me. And you don't think he never does it at home? Yes. Meanwhile I've been sitting here for ten years trying to get you to put those camel lights. But, you know, like, I think you are correct. I think you would want the father of your child children to live up to their best potential so that they can be the best fault. He can be the best. Hopefully. Does she want to metabolism? "Author of the Back in the Day Bakery Cookbook. And more recently baking for breakfast. Hey, Cheryl, How's it going? Hey, Francis, how are you? Well, thanks. So we're talking about breakfast and the first thing I want to know. Is When did you know you were breakfast person? Wow. That goes way back. I knew I was a breakfast person. When I was a child, and my mom would make French toast often, but on weekdays, she made something she called cinnamon toast, and it was just toasted bread or of slices of bread with big Pallets of little dollops of butter and cinnamon sugar on top, and then she'd put it straight in the broiler, and it was the best thing ever to take you off to school. That's when I knew. I think I love breakfast, and the other thing is She would always give us also coffee something she called coffee milk, which was basically milk with a splash of coffee. And so that was breakfast on most weekdays. Oh, man. What's he like? What she like an employee of like big coffee like you're just trying to get the kids hooked young, like, I don't know. I know. I think she loved her coffee, and we were always intrigued by it. So that was Something that she came up with coffee milk. I mean, my wife grew up in like a traditional Portuguese home. So like they always have wine on the table and would be that thing. We're like other kids we get A glass of water will splash a wide, so they felt like they were sort of joining in on the on the proceedings. Those memories are great, aren't they? They are and it's funny because you talk about the cinnamon toast. My dad never cooked. Never, ever, ever, ever, ever. Um I literally remember only one time in my entire life where he actually prepared food in the home, which is actually a special memory and zone because I remember was going to say, but one thing he would make for us Woz. Host, and we just be like white bread out of the bag. And with peanut butter. And he would pour so much sugar. On it. That would be crunchy. Wow. And I mean, I haven't had that in Literally decades, but Just thinking about right now. I totally remember my dad putting on a plate. I totally remember it's comfort. Yeah, that feeling of the crunch of the sugar crystals with the peanut butter toast and guys so reach for this. Slices of cinnamon toast like if I'm having a rough day, there's just something so comforting about it. Oh, that's lovely. That's so lovely. Okay, So, speaking of breakfast times You have this book baking for breakfast, and you have to ask you about it, cause I know there's such a You know, sort of romance, the idea of waking up to the smell of something coming out of the oven. But honestly, I have only once in my entire life walking up early enough to mix a recipe for Mitt and bake it first thing in the morning and like, Honestly, that was even for brunch. Not even for breakfast so well. It's hard, Theo, we're going to talk about baking for breakfast. Get more people into it. It's got to be quick and easy stuff right to start, at least. So what would you tell me? To make to get me into the habit. Oh, gosh. Well, I would say things that are super easy are quick breads, muffins. She could make the batter in advance and then scoop those out the next day. There's something that we're famous for. At the bakery. It's called Abyss Cone, and it's part biscuit and part scone. It's very simple. There was one day the bakery. I just could not bear to roll out biscuits. I was running behind and my invention Woz, the Biscoe. So basically it Z almost like a quick bread and you scoop it out. Instead of rolling it, and it's very flaky. I mean, you do still cut in the butter and all of that, but it's it's quick and I love it because there's so many variations. And it's really simple to make so those air just a few. Well right now I want to have more about the scones because I am fascinated by this idea, and also because I saw apparently your close personal friend Jennifer Garner and making them on instagram the other day, but But maybe for those of us who are not really super dialed in on the distinctions like what is the difference between a biscuit and a scope? Okay. And And how did you combine the two? Well, you know, biscuits. That's a Southern tradition. Sure, um, but and scones. They're really quite similar, You know, scones usually or rolled and cut out as well. But I think the ease of making a scone just seems I don't know. It just seems more approachable for people somehow. And so the combination of the two of the flaky And the extra flaky biscuits just you know, it's just a great combination. In the Agin made them in her nightgown. Famously, she likes to talk about how she's made them for a long time with her kids, but the ease of making them without having the rolling out and the cutting, you know, that's I think, sometimes a little daunting for people. So you just scoop it out and pop them in the oven, and they're you know, they're great. I love that because there's always There's so much Mystique around biscuits. And you know my me Mom made the best places in the world. It is all this mystery to biscuit making that you're saying will it just go on You just scoop it up. Drop it on the tray and pop it in the oven. You're good, right? There is no mystique to abyss Cone because I invented it, so it can be whatever you want it to be. Other new family fuse. There's no family feud. There's no this is what it should be. It's just delicious. But another great thing about them is is the variations that you can do. I mean, you can literally anything you have on hand in the kitchen. Um, you know, if you have dried fruit if you have fresh fruit if you have chocolate chips, I mean, you could just kind of play around from sweet to savory and just, you know, kind of go on a web of what you have, which we all learned a lot about that recently Tol work with what you have to switch is definitely something that you know. Controversial Is the operative word in this statement, Right? So I'm thinking like what causes controversy about genes that feels really intense. I read the following Jennifer Garner isn't afraid to get low. At least that's what her genes are telling us. While celebrities made the switch to high rise by around 2007 Garner has held fast to the southern sitting waistline. Don't know what those words. Yeah, So sitting waiting just means low rise jeans. That's what's controversial. Her low rise jeans. All right. Okay, well, I'm not a fashion person. Neither mine um but, ladies in general, you pay more attention to these things, because society requires you to think that this is important because it's a patriarchal society and They're trying to throw you off your game by making you think about pants. So maybe on the off chance that you have more opinions about pants. And I do. Is this a controversial thing? I do not feel controversy around this, Holly. I own some pants, do you? I am unenthusiastic pants wearer. In fact, I'm wearing a pair now. Whoa! Some of my best friends are pants. And I'm looking at these controversial pants over on the World Wide Web. Here's why they want to make this a thing, huh? Low rise jeans. Are on the up. Are they? But that's what the fashion industry is trying to do. Because here things low rise. Yeah, thank you. These aren't particularly low rise jeans. Remember back 20 years ago when the whole thing was, you'd wear a para thong underwear, And then they'd be up pastor pants and it would win lto affectionately call the whale tail. These are not those pants. But these are pants that have a new low rise so that you purchased them for the low low price of $225. I would say these are mid rise jeans. They look like normal genes. If I were to just look at a pair of jeans, I don't see any booty crack well into Holly's point, a zoo scroll down in the article. "I'm so curious since your kids are a little older than ours are and they aren't, as you said, becoming more adult like independent in thinking and have their very strong other own opinions about things. How did you help them? Like navigate what I'm sure was a like in the world of teenager not being able to go to school or not being see your friends or go to prom really whatever it is. She's very social that was is just she just had a really hard time and so now you know at the beginning, it was like, what can we do know when it first started I, kind of started us in with a weakened do hard things dinner conversation and with a notebook open. I always. With a notebook open in Lake let's talk about what we're going to need to do to be successful, and we're going to need to just be really kind with each other give each other space we're going to need to really find ways because they're big enough to. You know we know that the way to feel better is reaching out. So who in our church? Who in our lives could we be giving to in order to feel we know that we need to be safe? We're GONNA clean on Saturday. We just made a plan and we didn't always follow it but it gave us something to go back to you and then it really just sucked sometimes of course for everyone. On a couple of kids were really fine with zoom. They were just really happy that we were all cozy together. I have one who's feeling a little more paranoid about Cova. So it was. Great that we were. What are we gonNA, do how we can make this work because my middle daughter started saying me mom might bring repelling anything the teachers tried to tell me over zoom I'm not hearing it anymore and God bless her teacher who showed up in our driveway to talk through because she was A. student this amazing brain brilliant soon, and she sailed everything. We had to we had to really you know drill down together how we can make this work for her. It's just not all that you can't make it all. Okay. You know isn't that its own lesson to I feel like a lot of so alarming Evan parents for roughly seven years call it, and that was like a a novel moment where you realize that. If you've been a highly achieving person are you a like type? Any personality? You thought that reading a book or like they were set rule that you could follow him and you get the you know that was a very comfortable place to live in parenting is a daily affirmation that not getting every question right or not getting every answer right or not always having the solution is sort of par for the course. But obviously, this throws everything even into more of a tailspin. I'm curious because I do think that that's. Something that is being highlighted for any parent who has. Multiple kids you see how differently they're all taking your adding in. An and trying to remember that you have to be a different parent. Each of your children is a really crazy you know. Ends I'm. Back that was, it's not a question. It's more just like a yes I. Agree. I also, you know every day with parenting a fresh start to get it right or a fresh start to try something new is an experiment. It's a lifelong experiment in the way and yes, you can follow the books and I do I was definitely someone who when I was little I was very much prepared path for my child i. was like you know Oh, she's not being so every would be quiet you know what I mean Yes, it's not until I had my third that I learned to prepare my child's path instead of preparing the Padma, my child, and that is something that I I heard once in it's one of those little parenti things that has really stuck with me. Of course, it's going to be hard. Of course you know I feel the same way about resilience that I do about gratitude you can't tell your child be resilient. That's so condescending be resilient. You'll be resilient. Why are your time? You know it's Time you that. You. Point out to them. You know what's happening right now is that you are rising to a really tough occasion and I am seeing something in you. That is I. You know painting right not the the ones that are kids when they're younger but kind of a more complicated one and she's been working on that and every once in a while somebody will stop by and add to it and just kind of sitting on our kitchen table so if you're looking for something to do says she ended at. Hobby lobby if it still or you can order online. But she's been doing this paper numbers thing. She's doing it passing the time fun on bed. It's a real be able to cover the walls of your whole house. We'll have a gallery by the end of US right so you're looking for something to do. Yeah bickers the paint by numbers. Give happy you. Terry well it. Where do you date somebody? That's in reality. Tv those first three or your period to figure out what that person's lifelike and when he started dating her he knew what the Paparazzi was like. He knew what the press is going to be like and this man is from California. He understands that no matter what they do for the next twenty five years. They're always going to be linked together. Maybe have kids and be. That was the most significant relationship for both of them. So I almost don't believe this is one of those headlines. That definitely is not true. This is like an easy assumption to make but I do think him understanding that. That is her ex husband that they are very public couple when they were together and they share children is one thing but for him to still be speaking about her. I think is a different thing and I think no matter how much you love somebody. No matter how concrete your relationship is you wanna be with that person without their ex coming in and saying well the biggest mistake I ever made. Was you know not working things out with Max? "Truth Ben Affleck getting choked up talking about his divorce from Jennifer garner so he was on Good Morning America today and he also did an interview with The New York Times and he said I never thought I was going to get divorced I didn't want to get divorced I didn't want to be a divorced person I really didn't want to be a split family with my children and it upset me so much because it meant I wasn't who I thought I was and that was so painful and so disappointing in myself I'm sure he was opening up to the New York times about his relationship and its demise and how when things start to get hard in his marriage circa twenty fifteen twenty sixteen he then responded by deeply going deeper into drinking which of course made the problems worse right and then in twenty fifteen in June Ben Affleck and Jennifer garner called it quits after ten years of marriage they have a fourteen year old an eleven year old and a seven year old rather finalized in October of twenty eighteen but it's got to be hard to talk about all that stuff in public because not because of the issues itself but because it involves other people who are also in the public eye yeah and I'm you know like I just feel like that's gonna be awkward I mean I don't know what relationship they have now realistically but I think it's pretty positive or at least that's what they make it look like in the tabloid yeah they make it seem like that like they spend a lot of family time together and he kind of pops over he called the divorce the biggest regret of his life and has been really open with his about his battle with substance abuse he said divorce is very painful and alcoholism is very painful they just are and if there's something that your child is suffering that the level of pain that's not easily gotten past not easily forgiven not easily forgotten and it's hard you're not going to avoid causing your kids pain all pain pain is part of life I take some comfort in that you know I the the the article or the profile that that he has done recently where he's really talking through a lot of the stuff part of what makes this I think in deer is mean to him in the in his telling of his own story yeah is that there is a and there is a notion that he has an awareness of his part in it yeah I and I think I'd feel differently if he were putting things on other people but you really is telling his story from his very own perspective and I am hopeful that Jennifer garner has given her blessing on this I think it'll help people understand Ben Ben Affleck is better and she has moved on she's been dating John Miller this businessman and they've been dating for a couple of years now and insiders have been saying that he very much wants to marry her and wants to propose and she just can't be rush when that when you heard that right yeah because then it's like you've got the kids and I just don't understand and when you're very successful financially independent human beings and you already have a family or at least you have children you have to get married what what's the rush I mean it's different for everyone but you know I also think probably for her you know marriage means different things and you carry a lot of weight with what your last marriage was in her marriage was I am sure that being married to Ben Affleck was a ton of work that's what I'm saying to him my question was more to him like what's your hurry yeah yeah I don't know if she if she has one too you mean you saw the relationship yeah I think that's fine but I think it's just that's his intention that here really love to be married yeah you know some people really love to be married being married to something that's really
