Magazine's alex john about what's proving to be jennifer. Coolidge is defining role. Hbo's the white lotus now. I think we can point out that. This also isn't the first critically lauded project she's actually been apart of. She was an all of those mid-2000s christopher guest's mockumentary a mighty wind and best in show notably starring alongside people like catherine o'hara and eugene levy. But she didn't get quite as much credit for those projects. So why do you think that is. I think it's because if you play a you know a blond airhead and and i think there's this idea that it doesn't require much skill. Maybe or like that. It's not hard to pull off. But like she's magnificent in best in show and she doesn't quite get the credit for it. You know okay. This seems like a major moment for her. You know we've talked about it like they can't really think of another project we're here. Performance has been singled out. Could this be her. And i'm sorry for this phrase mcconnell since and it's so what kind of role would you really love to see. Her and i mean i would love for her to get to do that. Mike white project you know watch that that sounded great. Though i know i mean i think the way he described it was like imagine jennifer coolidge running away from a snake in the indian ocean screaming and i was like yes i can imagine. Will you know because i know actors are still ultimately hired hands right there sort of like at the whims of directors executive producers. All of these people who decide what they think you can do or the kind of person that you're allowed to be on screen right. And i think that fortunately with mike he is someone who kind of understands the breadth of her ability and that that would be exciting. You know to to get to see her do that. Kind of project where she really is. Fully the leading star. Let's see what she can do. You know now. In your profile of her we really get to see her insecurities and how she's been relegated to supporting roles for her distinctive look or because agents and managers. Let her straight. that's something that i think she even said is just like i sort of like. Let them take over. And i didn't really necessarily like stand up for myself for like what i wanted. So how do you think. Jennifer sees herself in hollywood. Now i mean. Do you think that she sees this as her big moment or has she sort of removed herself from any type of like hollywood analysis. Like this. i mean that's a good question you know like when we talked. I can tell that this would be a moment. You know like as someone who lives on the internet and kind of has a sense of how adored she actually is and i think that this would allow people to sort of see her in a different light. But i don't. I don't know if she really had that conception of like this. This is like a real turning point for me. I know that for herself. She wants to be taking more agency in terms of crafting her career and taking parts and being more aggressive. I think that that's always something that she's admired and other people like arianna 'grande or stuff like that. But yeah so i i think that will we'll see you know. She's always booked him busy though. I will say right because people do love her like she's going to be in shock shotgun wedding with j. and i mean i'm excited to watch it. You know i'm excited to see her do that because she is really good in. Like big comedies. But i would also like her to be able to flex in these different ways that she has clearly shown she can do definitely and we're all ready to watch her do it. "So she lives in new orleans. She has a house in new orleans. And it's in the lower garden district. It's this like mansion that was built in the eighteen fifties and it's basically like a haunted house like filled with just antiques old. Oil paintings are moore's velvet furniture upholstered mini bars. All of these things right and it's this thing that she's constantly working on like fixing the foundation the ceiling the wiring. You know there's always something to do with the house right like she's a deeply weird person in a way that like i got to go to new orleans. Spent some time at her house. We spent like three days together which was also something that was way more generous than she. Or the publicist. Publicist obviously did not negotiate that or want that. I don't think she was like very very down to just kind of like invite me into her home. And show me around new orleans. And so i got to really spend a lot of time with her and really kind of understand. You know the person that i think she is that she doesn't really get to show on screen in these personas that she plays. I can't wait to go more. We will be right back with.

The video for their new song rumors. Some trolls took it upon themselves to hurl hateful racist and fat phobic insults at her over the weekend. She posted an instagram. Live talking about how hurtful comments are. It doesn't matter. How much positive energy couldn't the world you student to have people who have something something mean to ill you tons of fans and celeb- share their support including cardi herself. Who tweeted when you stand up for yourself. They claim your problematic insensitive when you don't they tear you apart until you're crying like this. Whether you're skinny big plastic. That's awfully impacts you you can. You can be as talented and as rich and as awesome as funny as liz liz. And you're so fucking human with a fucking heart that gets hurt. I know something that you'll want to talk about. And i'm so excited about it can listen to you. Talk about is funny girl which everyone needs to know. Aeschylus favorite movie infrared. It was announced that beanie feldstein has been cast a star in the funny girl broadway revival and a lot of people started tweeting about leeann michelle who has previously expressed interest in the role herself. Most people seem to think. Leo would be anything from disappointed to enrage but if she is she's hiding it well after beanie shared the news on her instagram leah commented yes you are the greatest star. This is going to be epic. Okay so first of all i feel like saying that liam michelle had interest in guys now only now only did her character on glee. Rachel berry do an entire segment about like. They sang almost all the songs from the movie. But then her character even went on to star in the revival like a broadway production in the show. Then if i'm remembering correctly ryan murphy like originally had the rights to the like the show and i think we had sort of hinted like hey meaning either in this and so for it to go to beanie. I'm sure like. I saw so many hilarious. Tweet over the weekend about her potential reaction and one was just like we michelle. I'm just like that's exactly what i'm picturing. But that being said. Nfl scene is incredibly talented. I am so excited. I feel like really like anyone. That's not barbara. I'm right. We have an issue with but i feel like for that being said like i'm excited to see her. Take this on. i'm upset. I'm now going to have to go to because you know how i feel about new york and the cold by does funny girl trump the cold very much trump's almost everything i love it. It's like right on all right so moving onto a show. I am completely obsessed with we have. Hbo six episodes social satire. But the second part is one sellable why why is a guy like oh well. Crime classics best in show to legally blonde. She has always been a scene stealer however thanks to the white lotus. You may finally be making the move from beloved character. Actress to triumphant leading leading and our biggest question is what took so long new york magazine. Senior writer alex. "And i looked over and it was a six foot four big as beautiful man who was hitting on me. I said noah give me my back. You can't have me like this. Is the hair for me. Ma is the hit me. Baby yala cat calling us in our language away. But it's just i say this say. He did a formal apology conveniently after his headlining sets at three major festivals. Were all cancelled back to back. Banged back the apology is not even giving. It's not libs. And he didn't write it and i can tell because this too many words first of all It's too many words. You know what's really upsetting about. This is the racism in the defenses of the baby where they try and say. How could you respect like a young rapper from the hood understand the nuances of aids and like The gay community. And it's like baby. Are you calling a stupid people. Like plenty of people comfortable if people come from low income households myself as i like wasn't raised a big cobra. Phobia is okay. Plenty people here. Harbor phobia growing and then sort of what goes into the real world and learn anything and go. Oh okay yeah. that's not cool. Maybe i shouldn't. Yeah maybe i should stop saying the f slur. Maybe i should yeah critical. Thinking skills are are not just for people who disagree up in the hood also be grew up in the suburbs. Oh there's hidden it's not eh reminds me of do you remember j. cole. And no name had that song back and forth where they had that rat battle about reading. The hottest raby has years reading rainbow rap battle that we had the vibration bars and jayco was like my good sys- no-name everything my sis. Now my good says no name. You have to understand that. It's a lot of men in the hood who don't know how to read so you can't keep having a reading club and expecting us to pick up these books and it's just the same thing where you are undercutting undervaluing all of your peers. Because you wanna make a point. Infantilized grown men and saying that because they're black and living the hood like they don't possess empathy. They don't know how to read. They can't tell right from wrong. They weren't raised by mothers. That were idiot around them. It's stupid idiocy. And your parenting conservative talking whites. J. candice owens one in the same quote me. What is careless. Owens had to say about the baby her racks. She's actually featuring in the next album. So don't like that. But i think lastly sometimes there isn't room for growth is what i have to say about the baby because what in that same speech. Same coming out speech that you gave you went out of your way to terrorize antagonize disrespect. Violate meg the stallion by bringing tori lanes out. And you have a session about that. And i don't want these apologies. Terrorism installments. he's a villain he's a villain he's a villain and that's it on that and that's that on that and also that's that on this episode. Thank you jennifer coolidge. Thank you to you guys for listening. And thank you ira for letting me take take the stairs. Take the are you. Jesus took the wheel speaking underwood. I imagine that's what lewis was doing all week. Kerry back.

"Slump israel unless unless you are won miss billy. Who's second album just dropped on friday. She's happier than ever. And so are we allegedly allegedly. Yeah the the secret is this is an interesting album to be listening to after watching her documentary and knowing everyone she's talking about and hearing her very baldly say things like you don't have a job lyrics this this woman. I love this arab. I'm here for all of it. I'm here for the pinup. The corsets the disrespect. The spoken word giving lucille clifton. On one of these tracks. I'm here for sylvia. Plath we're gonna get to that governor or to get into that okay shel silverstein okay. We're to her spoken word part. The album itself is much sal. Great it is it is. It's great. I was expecting like it. Because you know like fan and thankfully lewis's assing here just tells the songs or too slow these ambien a go too slow for me. It's like okay. Why don't you go like listen to. Liz fares fifteen album. This timbre triangle interests appear. What's in your living room I really can't get over like a lot of the guys who will come for like billy. Someone's being too slow for me and you know it's not giving boxcar because he's operating in this pop space and she's so big. There's like this resentment that she's not doing the mainstream thing that she's still sort of like an indie girl and like in their era. The integrates more like just for them. You know because it's like because like she was giving me like feist one of her song. And i brought it up to a friend who adores feist but hades. Billy islas tom. Like what does the gag here like. What like what's not clicking. Yeah exactly. I think too that. This is a sad young woman. Like how many times do we have to tell you not going to be. Do a leaper running around doing spent like she is dualistic. Not even running around doing spin. Yeah well she's doing her best. She's taking a brisk walk. A brisk walk and a slight turn with a face the face that has a level of focus like she's doing quantum physics that is is giving us boston nova. She's giving us. These are the same thing critiques. I didn't hear for someone like lana del rey like we just took that summertime sadness. Whatever did all the pills with. Lana and we was quiet. Billy gives us tracks like sweet boss. Novas sixties inspired seventies inspired like retro slow ballads and with the mixture of finances. Great modern production and instrumentation is giving. You portishead is giving you the future like is giving you corinne daily. Ray like billy. Her records on there are so many influences in this album from music that i think used to have be sort of disparate. John ras When we were growing up and now it's so exciting to see someone just sort of like mixing them all into one album because of course she grew up loving all this shit like hip hop trip hop pop jazz and coming from the parents a musicians. How some more nepotism. But the card. Because i'm loving the result. Yeah the kind that cultivates talent. Not the kind that pushes you into a room and gives you a studio and One track oxytocin. I think i listened to also goes all the way since. We're one of the best songs i've heard in years. I didn't even know what genre put on. It was reminding me a lot about an rip missing sophie. And the way that like would just Us kind of these chopped up glitch. E sounds beautiful soaring vocals over top. I loved this song. So good Of the playful of it too. You know it's still. Has that fun playfulness of the first album. Where she was like even sam holding the office like you could tell. This is a young girl having fun. i really love. I didn't change my number. I love her vocal inflections. The part where she sort of. I and your best friend to i'm like okay. She's giving us vocals. she's giving us. You know just having fun with lyrics and phrases and Really just relishing. In because music the production a stellar bidding is is on the top of his game and i wanted to pussy initiation plus the end. It is amazing and this is i. Don't wanna pit them against each other. But when i do. I think about sour. Olivia rodriguez last album. The album of the moment contrasted against this one the maturity and billy eyelashes productions song. Everything about it is just light years ahead and it feels like the big sister to sour In a way and i she's slightly older. She slightly also will say that listening to sour with that. You can sense the lyrical maturity there you know because like there are other people writing pop songs that just feels blank and i will say that lake. Olivia in east saugus. Like at least like making a meal out of her emotions in a way that light spouse so much for her future lyrically. They're both great here. I would agree that. I love the product on this a bit better and also. It's there's more varied influences as much as i love. Pop rock anthems of sour. There's so few of them. There's really a few more like disney ballad on the album that i care for and our and our bit too slow and don't really like push forward with a momentum the way these two also happier than ever oh use us hath ballot and then get goes four as rock on it and now the out. That song is basically the our in one song. It's a switch up. I've that's the thing with billy is. I don't think there will ever be a genre or song or you know. We just obsessed with her vocal range like just she is one of the best singers performing right now if not the best singer and you know you hear that that intention. That's why i'm so mad that she chose to do spoken word. Emily dickinson on billy. Take your head out the oven. I want to hear your thoughts on this one mike. It's not for me. The spoken word is one. She's fully states has for herself. But also i for her younger female fans but also this is one of the moments where it is her. You shown to me because it is presenting an idea that is not novel You know like we've been dealing with this for britney and other pop stars. I always you know saying like. Hey if i dress conservatively. You drag me. If i dress sexy you call me a war This this is saying in mass media. Culture sent you know fear street. Sixteen sixty six. Okay but the concept that like she didn't make it a song. It's a whole spoken word thing. And i will say that as an essay it would get some cuts. I was gonna say that girl that just requires some requires some trimming. Its kind of laborious to get through it. Was i mean i could barely finish it the i and i and but it was the thing that you said about it. Being humbling reminds the audience. Like this is a nineteen year. Old girl. like you might have gotten lost in her lyrics and her ability to paint these pictures and because she has such a mature tone but the end of the day. This is a child trying to figure out how she feels. And how to operate in this world. And i love how candid. She is talking about her career and the expectation that we'd been we as a society have been putting on her. She of course talks about that in your power like this relationship with a man but also she talks about in getting older and it's only a year but is experiencing a lot of a lot of change during this time and i don't think i needed that that track though. I don't think not my responsibility. Needed to make the track listing. But also who's gonna tell billy that it shouldn't be on there. Nothing math with the keyboard eight bars. Are you sure we could. You know. Repeat what i said. I do want to say that also excited for his forthcoming music. You let's listen. I will say that fits phidias phidias..

"Oh that's me or whatever. Oh no but i did. I was with movies. I grew up in a small town where there wasn't much to do so i was like i mean i remember going like the movie theater where there was like four movies playing like this is still going to sit in there and watch them anyway just because i was really really obsessed than sort of scraping my inner thoughts and all that depressing. I had you know when you grow up in a town where it's not quite you haven't really found your group. I didn't really want to be an actress forever. And i didn't know anyone in my town that wanted to be one and i was struggling with my insecurities got so the movies were risk of course from. I think everybody is escape. And i was trying to get. Did i ever see one in a movie. Is someone in a movie that i was like. That's me but almost think of someone like terri. Garr or something. That's as close as i get. I'll love jerry guard. I love to regard. I mean having older. I mean i started like i distinctly remember people when i was i look. I was obsessed with of course everyone like every young girl. I prob- net and monty python. I was obsessed with like some of my favorite like muriel's wedding these and operates. You know i thought tony was just couldn't believe you're her her performance in that. I didn't know if there's going to be a place for me in show business. I didn't know. I didn't see anyone go like that's me. You're like you know. I have a shot at this but i sure as hell wasn't good at anything and i think a lot of people like i. I wasn't good at anything like i wasn't good at anything so i was in acting class and i'll never forget i was in an acting pass and mike. Someone came up to me after class. And they were like that. You're really really good in this. And i was like i was like ever like whatever came up to me and said like you know. Wow you're meant to be a cheerleader jennifer at were. You should give speeches around the world. No one was saying anything. Like i was a fast runner. No one was even encouraging me to ri- i mean i mean no one was like a fan of anything i was doing ever and then being another acting classroom something i'd be a little play and then people will come up to me afterwards and i was like it was really the only thing that i got positive reinforcement and then i knew maybe i was onto something when my i've played a guy in this like a What is it called. Summer summer stock theater and i played a guy made a guy in this copy. Your cat is dead. And i this little black man i wear muscle and then i father invited like four of our relatives to the show. I remember he didn't even introduce me to anyone at church like all of a sudden. He's the bringing my relatives to this show. And i thought out. Maybe there's something going here that i could. Maybe i could do this or something you know. I mean like because they weren't going like we can't wait till you play volleyball next weekend because jobs. You have all these friends. That are good at every mike. White spitted everything. Mike white can play tennis really well. You can write really while. He's an incredible athlete. You can give him any sort of complicated mind. Game might configure that you can give them one of those whose cubes whatever in my conservative open over here of his head then like back and all matches up there are people that are just sort of kept mastered everything but if you are only good at one thing it's really simple to choose what you're gonna do i mean and i'm seeing like i'm not even like like i didn't blow and they went away and like when did rumpelstiltskin god rumpelstiltskin. You're really good in that but it was certainly better than nothing. Which is what. I was so used to. Oh well thank god you chose the one option you feel you were given and we have all benefited from for so long. Now jennifer coolidge. Thank you so much for being here. Swan songs out this weekend. And of course we are deeply addicted to the white lotus and we will be screaming your lines for the rest of the most know about who's murdered okay. Well you think could be me. No i didn't. I did with that. The first episode alone. I was like there's just like a dreariness to this woman that's giving me killer and your mourning the death of your mother so it's like this could i thought maybe sell suspending judgment. Though i'll wait i'll wait. I'll throw out one class ability. I'm gonna guess it's got to be someone dastardly. i'm going to say. It's not jake lacy because he's in the first scene where he's talking they're talking about who's murder and i don't think it's alexander to either. I am going to say author county britain. I think that'd be really weird. Why not okay. you're promising. young woman cast mate. along with molly shannon. We are all. Yeah but all in despair it scenes really so it's easy to forget you all together. He did something for like a ver. Andy cohen and we were like. Oh yeah we're all in this neuron this each other. We're all right anyway. Thank you. We will continue to adore you. Whatever you do even even if it's volleyball even swansong out friday and everyone. Please go. Watch white lotus jennifer. Coolidge is amazing in both of them..

"And i said i know i just want to do it right now. I said i just wanna wait on another time. Whatever she said you know this is there is no other time. This is really all you have got to do it. Thank god. I have some good friends at talk at my insanity and really truly went insane. Bought not do it but yeah to place. Someone like complicated and tortured and to be honest. It was sort of easy to play the role once. I got there because i was sort of in sync. There was some scary stuff going on at that time. And so i sort of fell in sync with it. All you know somebody that really works sometimes what you have going on and be parallel to with the character and then it all kind of works out conveniently this roles i'd better ever been offered ever Almost blew it. Because i'm an idiot you know but it is still so nice to hear you say the things that we all feel which is that. I'm vain and i know. I have to be seen in a certain light and maybe i don't wanna be seen right now. It's just refreshing. Even hear somebody say that. So i appreciate it. I feel like actors feel it but don't ever say it. So thank you but you know what speaking of roles aligning with your life. And i imagine that it's gonna be me and three other young women that watch this show that will resonate with this character. Betty you played character named betty on the secret life of the american teenager. Which was my first introduction to you. I remember showing and be like mom. Why can't you be more like jennifer coolidge show. Look how cool she is. Look you're the best parent on that show sincerely your the only one that gave good advice to adrian or any of the guys on the show remember. I the bras you were. And that's what. I disliked about it. But i i think that they showed did a good job of like they made you a prostitute but they made you an amazing parent as well so it was like moral conundrum. Never forget this I had a long monologue. But i had to learn. It was one of the greatest thing that ever happened to me in a scene in an acting scene because ever in bar none in the middle of the scene kid does this giant yon. It was hilarious because it was like. I wasn't delivering it. Well i wasn't interesting and this kid was just like like i don't know i still. It makes me laugh. Still i think about it was just an honest response to my bad acting like that. Okay well speaking of people responding to you. I've been so interested in hearing mike white. Talk about you. Because he's one such a fan of yours but clearly keyed into you in a way where he's like. I know she can do this type of role that i've never seen her do. I was wondering what people in your past. You feel have best utilized. You are seeing the potential you. Jared has game here really great role in his movie. Gentlemen broncos his wife jerusha gave me a great role in austin land. Yeah the whites. Brothers gave me an amazing shot. Like american pie kinda changed a lot for me and Robert luchetti in recent mark. Platt guinean moodley blonde so without these people. I don't think i would have any sort of greer at all. Yeah there's a casting director deuce milton. And i met him in an act and class thirty years ago her. But he's put me up for some roles wieners. These people that you meet in his lifetime. I mean i don't really know many people. in las. to be honest. I mean as far as like in the world of acting in actors like i don't know a lot of casting rectors. It seems like the same like eight people had given me jobs. Just repeatedly that's fascinating to know the inner workings of that. I think as someone on the outside. If you're not fully in the world you just think oh. These actors go on auditions. Continue to go on dishes until a casting director loves them. You just don't understand the process at all so to the gears of at all or quite interesting speaking of people who have supported your career the whole time the girls and the gays i. We're obsessed with you. I feel like. I can't go anywhere into a environment with women are gays without your name being draft someone sheepishly trying to do an impression of you and failing so But i do think back to arianna grandes impression of you. That she didn't jimmy fallon. That was pretty spot on. And then you just popping up like the little cutie you are in the thank you next music video. I want to hear about that experience. Well i was very strange. That was like a really weird thing. I saw the imitation that she did of me. I thought it was rather brilliant. I think most of the world probably knows by now because you know. She's been popular for such a long time but she's really funny like a really funny person and so smart and advanced and you just really sophisticated sense of humor I've seen her do all these imitations and they're all really right. They're not just sort of good when she did me. I just you know. I sent something like you know. I don't know if she has like one hundred sixty two hundred million followers the is that she would get my. Dm whatever but idea under just said. Hey you think you do me. Better than i do myself. And then she let you know since you know on thanks so much whatever system really cute and then there is that was the end of that and then the next thing i know she's avenue the thank you next are just you know how cool is that. Yes i mean that just came out of like she must have someone. Go through jams. How could you go through a hundred st mayan dams day. Thank god she did. Thank god really cool about it. It was really a brilliant song and it really been cool even if it wasn't great but it's really great that it was like but i played in my car one that i. It's like an immortal song. It's like her signature song now. Yeah and i like the message of it. It's like you know these people break your heart. You know you just gotta give them less power and move on. I like that message. I spent like way too many years analyzing some in like me. Speaking of i guess imitation in a way. Like i'm so curious about somebody like you growing up in wanting to be in show biz because to me. Your timing is so specific and like your character so lived in like sometimes. They're so sincere in a way. That makes the viewer uneasy. And anyway there's all these like idiosyncrasies that are specific to you and i'm wondering who did you ever watch like perform that made you thought. Oh i'm going to do this to like i know you're a fan of meryl streep i read that but i can't. I can't imagine you're watching like the french lieutenant's woman and being like..

"Everything she has ever done and we're going back to the beginning here but let's talk the american pie movies. The christopher guest movies. The legally blond movies two broke girls. She killed it now. You can enjoy her and the new movie swan song and the fabulous new. Hbo show the white load which we will jump into momentarily guys jennifer coolidge. Everybody starts screaming so excited to have you on your truly like my favorite comedic actress of all time. You're the type of actors that i will happily fully give you comedian near the funniest. You're absolutely the funniest. I didn't expect this as you get rotten tomatoes but today good right okay in preparing for this. I read a bunch of interviews with you. And you are such a delightful interviewee just in general and my thought was. I feel like anybody who comes from the groundlings necessarily will end up being an interesting interviewee. They've just got to know themselves. Have to be ready to converse at a moment's notice. Do you find that people who come from an improv background are just great people to talk to like friends you keep. Yeah i imagine groundings in particular though. Y'all odd jobs and we were just sort of scraping by that improves things. It was a very humble and when was pulling up in their fancy car the brownie. It's so weird of people like thinking of people like you are kathy griffin will ferrell having other jobs instead of just doing the thing we all know they should be doing. It's funny to think of them delivering pizza or whatever then yeah bagging. Fruit at ralph's sang all my humiliating jobs every day. Because they helped me out i guess one. They were so humiliating. I was like. I can't do this for the rest of my life. I gotta figure a way out. But also i like humiliating jobs really. It was certainly. Would i wrote about every week at the groundlings. I mean congress. We life for sure The longer it's dreary. I think the better you get. Yeah and you get all that time to experience and observe other characters and bring that into your art later. I feel like my funniest roles that i've done doing improv. Is like stealing this entirely from the cashier. That i met or this woman in the lineup. Yeah the best characters created are truly the people that tortured me the most. Is that anyone who has been the most like the most vocal of an annoyance. I can see every part of them but ultimately these characters still. The when i'm doing they're love letters to this person now that i'm trying to become them but yeah they have to be. They've gotta have quirks. They gotta have recognizable quirks. and usually. they're annoying. I wanted to ask you. You've had a busy pandemic girl. When was he inside. Because i saw in like a bias with billy porter i saw you in promising woman for swan song and now also white lotus. When did you rest. It was very strange chris. I certainly wasn't prepared for any of the jobs merrily eating myself to death in my home here and really i mean i'm talking about i'm not not holding back in any way like to fact for my car to get in my car mats and not really and i thought it was gonna be drinking a lot but i i really wasn't because i thought it was the end. I really did think it was the end. I didn't think any of us. We're going to survive. And so i was just going for preparing for the end and when i got right lotus that was sort of blew my mind that they would want. And then of course. I was kind of postponed the job and see if i could get out of it to another time and it doesn't work that way but but yeah it was. It was white lotus. And then i got off a plane from that movie. I went straight to dominican republic for shotgun wedding and then straight to montreal. I can go all the way down to new orleans. Were we have a ghost. So i mean was a lot of jobs all sort of jammed together but i was able to squeeze the vaccine in there and i'm really happy that happened but that wasn't until the third fourth job will society. Thanks for getting that vaccine because you apparently could've spread it to four different continents based travel. I'm always interested when la actors. End up in new orleans because new orleans first of all feels like the only place in the us that could basically be its own planet like it doesn't relate to anything around it really. It's not like any other city in the south. What brings someone like you there. Are you surprised to find yourself there. And you've been there now for what like a decade and a half. Yeah have yeah. I mean thank god that might sister decided when you. My sister and i grew up in boston. My sister susanna crew which decided to go to two lane. And i really believe if she hadn't signed up for that i had come to visit her. I don't know if i would have discovered. I don't know it was like my number one destination on the map but when i got here and i started roaming around city stuff i was like. Oh wow i. I have to have a house here. Something really like it here now. You run a second line club and you make po boys for everyone and fully ingratiated into society. I was gonna ask you about white loaded which is amazing performance and it is so funny. It's hilarious seeing you and tasha rothwell again. My favorite people in one scene. I was just shocked as it was happening but good actress she's hilarious. You know tasha for your plays kellyanne insecure. And it's just the funniest naturally. Was your onset experience like for this role because you guys were on location. You're in maui. And but in the middle of the pandemic and which has large ensemble cast. But what was that like for you guys. The hours were not my favorite. Sometimes you have to be tested for kogo every day so you can call timer would be you know two thirty or three to get that test and then make up inherently so so it was getting i. I didn't like those hours to thirty three. I just don't feel right but the group sort of made up for everything that group of people and there was these beautiful. See outside the door that you could go hug. You were finished your scenes for the day goes swim with the other actors and That was pretty great but i. I was incredibly distracted a lot of the time. Because i know we got there. You know the election coming up and i. It was just their of very stressful. And of course you know you don't wanna get co your petrified of getting opponent but somehow was the group mike white was at the helm and sort an exceptional experience. It ended up being really exceptional. We all survived it. There's something about this show where it's full of self absorbed characters and yet. There's something very charismatic. About how every episode. It's about learning something new about each character and then seeing new interactions between characters. That i seem crazy. And then. In retrospect field inevitable. There's something so smart about this show. Where like you just end up believing what's happening and i was wondering while reading the script. Were you shocked to find out what we find out about your character over. You immediately zapped into her. Where you immediately intuitively connected to tanya. Yeah i mean. I really liked the role i really liked it and i thought look. No one's ever offered me a role like that but at the same time i didn't wanna do it. It was being offered a timer. I've been very vain. I didn't want to be on camera looking like that. Even play a role. I guess i was like in some like. I'll just do this another time. I do this. I wanted to do it in three or four months so i could get my act together. Mike should knew. I was sort of hedging in the middle of the night. I was lying in my bed. Remember way to get out of it. And then mike. This text comes in on my phone. And it's from mike white like to morning and it just said. Are you afraid sort of felt my my anxiety through the airwaves. But it was him and then the irs amazing names casement in her. I didn't wanna do it. And she said but this is like a great role for your..

"Me. You didn't hunt. You got our king and hopper pan. Come on i would love to see it and it is. It's not just the talk. It's like showing me that you care and that you are inclusive and then again putting them in you're right. She didn't cast colors so you coffee. That's come here boy. bring my coffee. I do want to point out though the franklin that was like a madman like the conversation got hijacked and it was really about if you believe that. It's a takeuchi. Explain hollywood's utter lack of diversity behind the camera. A that's what you susan. I though i love you love. You could not have nuance conversations. Twitter yeah you gotta say what you mean i otherwise is gonna become unwieldy and also he did point out that like listen in all fairness. It's a short fem. But also he knows what does casting the short film meredith like being the trades. So exact may nobody else has short film as announced in the trades. Mind better be if i make one. And that'll be in the trades. He working long ago. I don't know maybe okay. Keep it hush hush secret secret things. I still love nepotism where. It's deserved like black nepotism. Don't care you think i'm gonna. There's no interviews. All my friends are going to work for me when the time come absolutely black. Nepotism is the future has to be it has to be But i also think there's another interesting thing like the lack of knowledge. We have about if nepotism did play a role. In one of our favorite people's rise. It can still tarnish who they are as a person like we finding out your favorite indie artist has wealthy. Parents can be devastating like trying to hide it. King says now any air. Did she receive any money. Do we know we can't. We can't just that ambiguity from me that makes it so difficult even want and listen to her songs. I'm like then you see the people who you really enjoy. Fucking love jack wade in the boys and then i'm like a his parents. Yeah but i don't think he gets any nepotism except for the fact that dumb wa puts blind items about jack kwaidan every other week. Somebody over there is running iraq. But it's probably not healthy. Young little paola industry. Pretty well i think about someone like jane fonda. Probably not as much as lewis does but think about jane fonda and being the daughter of henry fonda. And if you just forget you don't it's jane fonda doesn't matter at a certain point. I think that like let's say olivia date actually got to go to college that our mother tried to pay for her to go to one weekend in georgia psychology. When she's failing getting kicked out like there's still there's still a difficulty of getting into these places and then establishing yourself and continuing to be talented and sorry to miss olivia. But we know plenty of famous people's kids who are not doing anything or try to get that access and then have flopped. You know not. Everybody's paris hope been plenty of want to be paris. Hilton's plenty of people go for the socialite routes and still make don't make it to the public conscious. I'm sure they made it in the sense that like they're still. They're so wealthy. They're just not in magazine covers. The whole thing is a mess. The whole thing is a mess. I want you to name names. That's how i would like it to get but what name rings things people's kids who are not popping now. You don't have to do that. I don't know rumer willis exactly she's pop in it like she has her fans. Yeah she's great in the house. Bunny she was on affairs or flowers and on a ferris like came from nepotism as well. You know she's dennis farina's daughter. She changed the farina to ferris. I'm kidding you don't have lewis here for these jokes. My right here with me jeff. Bridges admits quite honestly like a mo product of nepotism. That's my best jeff bridges. I'm a product of methodism. How started acting. I'm lloyd bridges. Like he doesn't care. I respect that level of when it comes to your background and nobody's gonna have that. I was homeless and nominee actor story. Just brother todd is also open about it. It's another one you know what. Let me let me cut this.

"Jerry stiller son. Ben went out of his way to wade into an argument. He was destined to lose about the role. Nepotism plays in hollywood claiming that the children of stars have to fend for themselves after getting their foot in the door. Franklin leonard the blacklist disagreed. Ira how we feel buddy sheet sociable. I love that this like blew up in to like a conversational view. Yes we'll be was having a field they would shit and meghan mccain like like. I don't need to ever hear her. Speak but i think the thing was at all is that this movie is coming out right. It's called the right way and it's from dentistry spielberg last name. She is the daughter steven spielberg. She's the white spielberg child and the screenplay is written by own king. Another familiar last name. The son of writer. Stephen king and the cast. We're getting a hopper penn. Who is the son of sean penn. And then actor. Brian d'arcy james. So of course this sparked a huge conversation on twitter about whether hollywood was in fact. Crecy or if nepotism was the invisible hand that guided everything in every decision. Ever and ben stiller responded to franklin leonard's like quote tweet with hollywood's meritocracy right and he said to easy franklin people working in creating everyone has their path which all the best. Okay okay them. People have a path like the green knight like where they gotta go on like a long asked journey. Okay have to deal with like joel edgerton. But some people gets you know. Take a private jet. They're exactly ben. Stiller has the nerve to have these tweets as if he got a rags-to-riches story. You are the child of jerry stiller or the child and jerry stiller again this the same thing as meghan mccain. I don't need you to speak on this. You're coming straight from the well of opportunity and access and of course it's difficult to have a nuance conversation on twitter. Of course it's like we know this but both of these things can be true. Well we understand. Hollywood is not a meritocracy right just entirely no way also. Nothing is he. This is this is like a hit dog. Hallward thing right because franklin hollywood zamira talked recy- obviously like it's an easy rag. But ben stiller was his feelings for the reason because like he is insisting people have to work hard people have to work. And i'm like listen. Nobody saying you don't work hard. I know my man ben. Stiller works hard. Okay ben so as okay did. I was working really hard on that escape that john mara thing that i did not watch never watch. But i've actually been stone. Fan state of ben stiller fan. I appreciate that people. Who are the children. Famous people work. You know but you cannot ignore the fact that like they get to jump through a lot of hoops the rest of us don't have to and they should also recognize that like some of the hoops that they do jump through our who that we wish we hat like. A lot of their hoops will be like fear that like they are getting things because their parent is famous or just being like you know people being like not taking them seriously just because they know that they're going to be okay in the world but also if you're desperate spielberg like you will be okay. Yeah okay even if people wanna drag like you can go home to your millions. And that's the unsettling thing for me is like luckily after this came out dentistry acknowledged the fact that she does have a lot of privilege like there. I think hearing these celebrities be okay with accepting the fact that nepotism got them in the door but they had to continue to work like these familial connections got them in but ultimately like they have to be talented. Which will see. We still got see film. However what i don't like in the certain cases of hollywood nepotism. Is someone like a miss. Lena who we know famously sold her show with like posted. No and some ambition goes out of her way to be like well. Nobody knows who my mom is She's not even famous like you can't deny the fact that it's not about fame it's about access it's like you're missing. The actual definition of what nepotism is. Like yeah your mom is an artist in new york our photographer in new york. But you think she don't know somebody in the industry who got you a seat at the table pitcher show to hbo like it's just. It's just dismissive in road and disrespectful to us to make us feel like we are so that shit and there's also the fact that the people who are not born with any test you know you have to create access because the whole thing about anything in the industry is it's all about who so explicitly are building connections. You're going to parties. You're working in rooms with people having conversations with like minded people and that is how you get a path to anything in this industry but some people already have those connected from being bored because of their parents connection and that is the difference. That is what you're trying to explain to people because you know it's like every job i've gotten is from knowing somebody. But i had to do the legwork to get to know people. Because i didn't know anybody when i moved here exactly and i also nepotism has is like dirty connotations because of how dismissive it is to people who don't have access but i feel like life is in america. Crecy like oh used. I used to work in group homes right and i had the best job in the whole group home. I got to do the overnight shifts. And i was making way more bread than all my girlfriends. I was working there because my mom was the bus. My mom was the vase. Like all of this stuff. Trickles down to every aspect of our life and that it's it is about access it's about who you know and how you can get into places. I think the most difficult part about it is once you're in once you're in these high positions like de she was actually talking about. Make sure your young people who have been kept out of working in hollywood system like being or a writers assistant like these initial jobs that help solidify f. I you as somebody in the industry use your power to do that. And i'm not gonna shoebox right zoe. Kravitz do whatever the hell you wine. Have that middle part. We i'm watching high fidelity willow producing songs herself on her album. That's the good nepotism. We'll be quiet. I do want to say though that desperate did say. I acknowledge that. I was born with privilege owned that through through. I make it my mission to bring new talent into the industry and give opportunities to artists of all backgrounds. No one should be left out. Because of the connections they don't had cysts. Who's in your movie show.

Which is sad because it has so many thoughts about the white lotus first of all. Give her her emmy mmediately. Not just for the speech that she had on the boat while scattering hormones ashes but also twitchy lay down in bed and through the ashes go. I also want to commend. Mike white for like really analyzing like whiteness. Liberal privilege In this series such an interesting way. Because it's like natasha rothwell honorable we should i. Should i should be playing like a mammy character right but she knows that this is what this woman was. But she's leaning into because she wants to escape This life that she's at it's such a great nuanced portrayal from both of them and it's amazing and other thing. Murray bartlett is giving me a gay character. I've never seen on tv before. He's giving me anti hero. He's giving me breaking bad. He's giving me rooming lucas gauge in his office. I want more white lotus seasons with like him still running the white lotus and like continuing to fall apart with new guests. I got you. You want like i ryan murphy situation. Same actors like the show hotel fantasy island. You know like he's he's still work at new guests. Come in it. It's supposed to give anchoring around him. "Absolutely nothing. No vacations i'm just getting back. You know back in the in the groove at polygon. But i do have a reading recommendation. I guess what i did this week. I read this great yelich. Sjeng profile of jennifer coolidge on vulture wear jennifer. Coolidge lives in like a dark mansion in new orleans and has black candles and a like wind up doll that her grandparents gave her a front of nebulous origins and she invites alex into her home and within like takes him out for lunch and breakfast and stephanus just generally delightfully wacky So if you would like to read a just an incredible work of celebrity profile. I'm going to watch it tomorrow. I think we might dive a little bit deeper insight we touched on the whole britney spears conservatorship and issue and the weird conspiracy theories about it that i was not really buying. I forget what episode was but if you do a little google you'll see it. We touch on briefly. And i want to go into deeper so keep an eye out for that. It has been too long since we've talked about hilaria baldwin aka fake spanish. Mom married to alec baldwin. Really i stand by being being my favorite pop. Culture story of twenty twenty just brought me so much joy now. I am so shocked. That salma hayek actually commented on this. So salma hayek played alec. Baldwin's love interest on thirty rock for a little while. And there's a lot of rumors that he was into salma in real life and like tried to get with her and people were saying that lari was kind of like this low budge. What's the word like a dupe for salma. Hayek because he couldn't get the real thing. Yeah beside- besides saw mike. So that's why. I find selma commenting on this. Particularly noteworthy and quotes are incredible. So she said this when she was on. Andy cohen's i. I'm sorry i don't remember. It was his podcast or watch. What happens live. But i think her quotes are incredible and very understanding. Probably more understanding than i would be if some was just straight up appropriating. My culture like but again. I can't put myself in her shoes. I would have no idea what that would feel like. But this is what she said. We all lie a little bit. She makes my friend happy. She fooled me because she's such a good mother. She has five kids. And you know. I don't care it makes me feel proud. That people are inspired. I think she's smart to to be spanish. We're cool you know. We all create our own character in life. I mean this might be extreme okay. But i don't care she's not a bad person she's a good person a good mother a good wife. She my friend happy. She's very kind to me. And that's all i care about. I'm sorry i don't mean to portray hurt anybody's feelings. And i don't know if it's right or if it's wrong i'm not gonna judge somebody just because of that one thing. Well first off. I had to say she is really right about spanish. People being cool. I wish i had been born as a spanish person. I love spain. Really i mean again. I'm like choose only been to like three cities in spain now. That sounds obnoxious. I was gonna make well. I'm that but she's only been like barcelona and then i'm like wait. I've been to madrid and sons. Boss john too. I can't just. I just i've been a visa to fuck i sound. I sound awful okay. I love spain period. If i ever do get married.
