The government is not Now, nor will we be supporting system that requires Americans to carry a credential. There will be no federal vaccinations database and no federal mandate requiring everyone to obtain a single vaccination. Credential. She did say their concern was with protecting Americans. Privacy colleges like Rutgers, Duke Brown Cornell are requiring students to get vaccinated. Cruise lines like Norwegian and American Queen Steamboat will require all guests and staff to be vaccinated. The MBA announced last week, a partnership with a comedy called Clear, which has developed a health pass AP Clear says it offers covert symptoms surveys but also a way to store test and vaccine data. The Miami Heat has started allowing fully vaccinated people who can prove it. Sit in two sections closer to the court. They still have to wear masks. Last week, the Mets announced they'd also be using clears health passed to confirm a fan's negative covert tests before game attendance. MGM Resorts is also partnering with clear, as is Las Vegas Sands Corporation. And, of course, as you might imagine, the airlines are considering all of this to their trade group. The IA Thia says they've been working on a travel pass. Different countries have different covert restrictions before entering. And while New York was the first state to create a so called vaccine passport with the Excelsior past other states are interested. "This is incredibly difficult. it's heart wrenching. And it's a really difficult decision but this is the best decision we felt. We could make to keep these kids safe and get them into the right places and rate holmes. Well i just wanna know are you are. Are you not detaining children's separately in their own facility. That's a question that everyone has. I'm sorry can you say more time. I just wanted to know are you. Are you not detaining children's separately in a different facility. Well megan these are. This is a facility. That was reopened. It was revamped and it was redone to have these kids in a place where they could have access to educational services health services to they could find proper homes. We can't send them directly to families that haven't been vetted we've seen issues with that in the past we can't have them all in the former. Hhs facility because of cove it and we need to make sure their safety protocols so that they're not in beds next to each other this is around including from people within your own party like aoc. And i think there's just a lot of people that see this as hypocrisy and that it's just sort of potato potato kids in cages or kids. Being separated from their families. Kids are being separated from their families will make in what's important and what we all have a responsibility to do is communicate clearly about what this is and what this is not and this is kids going to a facility. Run by hhs. We had to open a new one to make sure it had the safety protocols. In order to address the cova The covid needs and the health and safety needs because we can't have as many kids in the former. Hi facility that's exactly what we did but our objective is to get these kids into safe homes with their families as quickly as possible and we're absolutely not doing what the former president did and frankly the current president and the current vice president objected to which is ripping kids from the from the arms of their parents. That is not the of this administration and not something we would do jen. I was reading this morning. That many of the children have been reunited with their parents already. That this is an ongoing thing. Isn't that so that the biden administration and sell ready taken that step to reunite children with their parents. It's how how is it in anybody's mind the same as what went on before. It's outrageous it absolutely not the same and that's our objective. We want these kids to be safe. We want them to be treated humanely. We can't send them back on the journey. They just went on. That is not the right choice but we need to make sure that we are finding their families. That's hard to there's not the data and the history thanks to the last administration so this is incredibly difficult joy. We want these kids to be with their families to be reunited. we want them to be with family members. It's gonna take some time and we also want them to be safe during a time where there's a global pandemic and that required the opening and revamping of this facility. There are mounting calls to remove postmaster. General louis dejoy for allegedly sabotaging his own agency and trying to slow down postal service deliveries of mail in ballots before the twenty twenty election which he does deny but he told congressional oversight committee. Democrats to get used to him since he isn't a political appointee basically saying he's not going anywhere president by nominated three additional members to a governing board that could potentially Vote out is that he could be replaced because right now the board is non diverse and we all know that the postal service is has at least over thirty percent african american employees. The that's exactly right and first of all the men and women that the postal service doing an amazing job delivering rain. Snow sleet everything Everything under the sun and this is a circumstance whereas you just outlined it very clearly. I've learned more about the postal service than i ever thought. I would know in the last couple of weeks but requires the board of governors a majority of them to overturn the leadership. And it's clear that the leadership can do better and so that's our hope but it's really going to be up to them to make that decision. We just announced the nomination of a couple new board members just yesterday and we're eager to have them in place now tomorrow. President biden will travel to texas to serve the storm damage from earlier this month. We're seeing a real humanitarian crisis in the state with a lot of texans needing food water and shelter. How does the president plan to help. Well i he's going to be spending the day with the governor of texas because this is not a partisan issue this is not just impacting democrats. Republicans impacting all of the people. In the state there obviously was a period of time where we needed to make sure that people were safe now are at the recovery stage. We need to make sure people have access to clean water access to places to live and to stay and so the president wants to survey the damage that we can tap into all the resources in the federal government. "Era. That's a good halle berry halle berry berry what dave landau's facial hair is real mustaches. Great unbelievably sexy. It's delusional she. Looks like the nerdy kid. Flexing in the mirror and little giant. Rick excavated him. No here's the thing she says it's it's not a defense speech. incites violence. What this is the step these are. The steps are trying to take okay. Donald trump used. I am under the guise of free speech free speech just an illusion by the way. Free speech doesn't doesn't apply to inciting violence. Donald trump incited violence. Also here's the guidelines for all of social media speech that incites violence that could include any speech that is unpopular or someone else who may be crazy takes as an inspiration to commit violence as you saw. Scalise is bernie sanders responsible. What what what about hallmark for crying out loud in by those people actually did call for violence. There's a big difference here. Bernie sanders recall marks right but when donald trump says make your voices heard peacefully. Keep in mind they are saying is donald trump ceases to maintain his first amendment rights. When he says you need to fight like hell for your country meeting election regularities that is no longer free speech and they want to apply that they wanna put that all under an umbrella. All of you and here is where we bring in completely straight money. Brian stelter and what else in the media this threat of arguing and second. We have to turn down the capability of these conservative influencers to reach these huge audiences. So the first thing remember. Brian is that the first amendment is a restraint on government from imposing on the rights of private citizens so there is a broader question of whether the first amendment is indeed a defense for a government official facing accountability for his actions while in office. But while some craig cancel culture. Let me suggest a different way to think about this. A harm reduction model. You mean having your kitchen staples can't even believe that they're talking about this stuff like that with a straight face saying this is fine. Let's just limit the speech of people that we disagree with because we disagree. Here's what's so worrisome. About it now and always said when donald trump was president it was kind of the last check and balance. Brian stelter self awareness to understand that everyone everyone sees. This is self serving arm reduction. Well what does that mean. What would you like to see. I would like to see shows that do better than me on a fraction of the budget shutdown which shows adobe all pretty much literally every show does better than mine and so i think i should be labeled hate speech more nuisance many please. They want to shut down. This is what we were talking about for a very long time..

"Coming down. Do you think your sister likes to talk? Yeah, modify later. Thanks for coming here. Thanks, bro. Of years. Come back any time when you're coming back. It's so what's that? Their plan was what 618 billion pittance. Apparently 618 billion. What is that? Nothing on and they want 1.9 trillion Was it. Jen Psaki afterward was saying that's not good enough. Who was who was the spokesperson? Afterwards? Jen Psaki was talking about the package and then about what they what they want his view eyes that the size of the package needs to be confessed commensurate with the crisis we're facing. That's why he proposed 1.9 Trillion. There's obviously a big gap between 600,000,001 0.9 Children. I don't think any of us are mathematicians. Otherwise we wouldn't be here. But we can all state that clearly and so clearly. He thinks the package size needs to be closer what he proposed, then smaller Can I weigh? Hear this all the time? The pack is just has to be huge because the problem is huge. Number one. That's bad thinking. If the problem is huge, the package in the funding may have to be huge. It's not as if that's not a possibility. But the idea that we just have to throw his much much it has to. We have to waste the amount of taxpayer money commensurate to the size of this crisis makes no sense. First of all. It's not reported on very much is that awful lot of money from the last round still hasn't been spent. By the states. Because every dollar is supposed to go here or there, and a lot of states. They didn't need this money for that particular problem. And I know that Brian Kemp was asking for permission since I got the money and I don't need it for that problem rather than sending you more money. Could I just use that money for this other problem? No. No, You can't. So it's not real convenient. You're not gonna hear it a lot. It's the truth. There's a lot of money in the states from the last round that because of regulations couldn't be spent, and it's still sitting there. So number one. You could repurpose a lot of that money and open that up. When she says it's not big enough for the crisis. Here's a little interesting thing that I found. Biden's 2021 Covert 19 bill cost more Then the entire 1981 federal government. Reagan's first year you What's the first thing you say? Ah, Eric, but inflation and I would say Ah, no, they adjusted.

Stolen five hundred year old painting and the museum responded by telling the police. What don't bother looking for. it no already found it. Keep it no. They took it back. I don't know can you give me a clue. Yeah well they said oh. That explains the blank spot on the wall. We had no idea what it was missing exactly right. This portrait of christ painted by student of leonardo da vinci was discovered in an apartment in rome. After police got a tip. it was there. They recovered it. "And now the game where we put odd questions to people who just aren't used to that. But not this time jen. Psaki has served in the trenches of government for years but now she is the most prominent face of the biden administration. She's the white house press secretary. She has already redefined the role by answering questions calmly and factually without insulting the questioner. We didn't know that was possible. We hope she's still at now. Jen psaki welcome to wait. Wait don't tell me thank you. This is what. I'm going to get really nasty so finally finally i actually wanted to to ask you that because a number of people have noted that That you've been very generous professional. We're not used to that. Have you been tempted yet. And i know this is not your first gig communications professional but have you been tempted yet to just snap it. Somebody since like all bets are off. You know dana perino book. She talks about Having your finger of the middle finger up in the podium underneath when she's like real they're getting under her skin so all burnt out as an option but not. It's only been a week. I i have a little secret thing. i do. Maybe not secret. 'cause i'm telling you but when when reporters are getting really loud or they're they're starting to ask crazy questions. I just slow down my pace. And i talked very quietly. Might need them like. I'm an orderly. Sometimes in silence. Ha not that. They're not that they're people in asylum but sometimes that's all you have to do to pull yourself down inside were you because this is what i would have done and this is why i am not trusted with jobs like yours. You tempted at all to come out and your very first day. At the very first biden administration press conference and announce that binds inauguration had the largest audience. Ever despite what everybody was saying just just to just to do it. I mean i was tempted. I did get a lot of people some of my predecessors not naming names who sent me jokes you know jokes crowd size. None of them were great. I was a little worried stairs like what's happening right now. So i didn't do any of them. But i was a little temp- did not jan. Is it your goal. You very good at what you do. And it's very calming and nice to see but is it. Your your set goal is just to try to get on dancing with the stars. Whatever you do like not that not that don't end up there. Whenever i'm having a low day. I kind of i have from time to time pulled up. That picture of sean. Spicer's video hums singing in that shirts. I'm cut personal wish l. but that was pretty amazing not to get the stars mom. It's true it it wasn't the dancing. It wasn't the stars. It was the puffy sleeves that really spilling your wife see boxer aware that knowing almost wanted to give them advice. Now there's been It's been a lot of turmoil with what i'm about to mention but how we're we're ready. Which instructor does biden ride with the most for peleton. Peleton tell me you're also going to have to give me his screen name. I'm just letting you know. I mean i am not afraid to ask them all sorts of random questions. I have not asked. I really wanted to be alley. Love sundays with love com on sundays with love. It's this is really really got to work out a little spiritual. it's everything. I pictured president biden as more of like a. I don't know like an allergy sankai. I don't know. I definitely need to know the answer to this. I've wondered that means a follow up with all of your lists we. We should get to ride with him. So we notice you've been doing this for awhile. And you're pretty good at dodging want to answer. So that is trump. We wanted to see how you did it. So i'll ask you this Hey jan we're having this great time. We're having this great time saturday night. We're all going to hang out. We're going to be playing some foosball. My basement drinking some you know white claw. Why don't you come over. Can you come over and join us for that on saturday night. That's a great offer. I really appreciate it. I'm just gonna have to get back to you after the briefing on it. Promise i'll do that. That's it just twitter's little fun with me. Because i salmon circle back on a circle back now i will say in my my teeth very hardworking team and can confirm obsessed with circling back with reporters. And not just saying it but after the briefing getting back to them. That is sort of a tip. I have that. I've got to work on but often what what all say desert different things is. I will say. I just don't have anything more for you on edge. Don't have anything more for you. Which is true And sometimes that's the that's what you're gonna say. That's a great way to get out of a relationship to just talk cycling and you know they're in they're just not going to know the answer to a million and one different questions they may have and sometimes you just have to follow up with them and that's okay too so i actually do that but when i am not gonna tell them anymore. I don't have anything more on that. So that's my check us with boyfriends. Walk off the from the podium. "Don't tell me either. This is alex palmer from washington. Dc alex palmer in washington. What do you do there. Well i actually specialize in international election integrity. Do you really. How have the time have you. Have you actually considered like who's going to hire you to oversee elections in the united states. You know. I really hope no one does that. I guess once we have to call you. It's already too late. Well alex welcome to the show. You're going to play our game in which you must try to tell truth from fiction bill. What is alex's topic too late to exit brexit at first it seems like brexit was going great the uk even won the race to invent a new corona virus varian. But now we're seeing signs that it wasn't maybe such a good idea. Our panelists are going to tell you about that. Pick the one who's telling the truth. You'll win our prize. The waiter of your choice on your voicemail. Ready to go all right i. Let's hear from tom papa. Many britons wanted to brexit because it would keep those suspicious foreigners out of their business but it also of course makes it a lot harder to import all kinds of delicious food leaving them. Only with jelly deal spotted dick and canned haggas so to deal with the looming shortage of prepared foods and also to cut down on wasting the food they have british authorities have instructed citizens. Hey that used by date ignore it. Many foods which have exceeded their best before date are still safe to consume weeks and even months later some helpful techniques. Look at your potatoes. Are those vines. Growing out of them or useful handles bread. is it stale. Or has it just turned into a giant crew thanh and milk. What's wrong with a drink. You can chew. As opponents of brexit have been saying for years as they look up from their tea and clotted cream. Something just don't smell right. Britain's being told to just ignore those expiration dates in their food were share. It's fine yes enjoy it. It just smells a little funny. Your next story of brexit problem comes from jesse klein. Fifty two percent of british citizens who voted for brexit presumably. We're hoping for a long term economic boost where they didn't bank on however was some very unexpected and sobering news at ten downing this week. After months of negotiating prime minister boris johnson announced that sadly one of the trade offs leaving the eu would be the loss of their distinctively charming british accents which has turns out were imported and are no longer affordable. The country let out a collective gasp as they were informed in a national address that effective immediately the entire nation will have to speak with cheapest accent available which unfortunately is mid western american adding insult to injury many of their most cherished british expressions such as knackered. Bloody hell pip and chuffed will all have to be swapped for americanisms. Like where's my food. And how much is that gun. Millions of brits are despondent over the loss of their accent which many counted on for an aura of sophisticated intelligence even when they were doing stupid. Things like voting for brexit. The accent was our thing lamented thomas. Well as an accountant from yorkshire now we sound completely daft unfortunately for thomas brexit daft is now considered an import word and he had to fill out fifty pages of tariff paperwork. Teves in britain's having to give up their as it turns out imported posh accents. Your last story of a breakfast season comes from yasser lester like a lot of countries. The uk is facing huge vaccine shortages but unlike a lot of countries they have a plan. You're using what supply they do. Have to vaccinate dogs. Both those living at home and wild dogs roaming the streets and the countryside not because dogs are objectively better than humans but to save humans dogs by nature or one of the highest aerosol producing animals on the planet so allowing their microscopic saliva to fill. The air may not stop covid in its tracks out in the open but if inhaled by humans can give them the. Antibodies needed to fight off more of the virus than they would have without it. Dogs are basically being used as vaccine. Spreaders thanks to their heavy breathing. Which wild disgusting does hurt less than a shot. The new protocol of course has animal activists. Cova deniers vaccine chasers equally in an uproar. The deniers potentially forced to inhale a medication for an illness. They do not believe exists. The animal activists upset that. The dogs didn't consent to vaccinations. And the vaccine chasers furious that they have been denied while quote unquote. Some guy's pet gets the shot before they do all right. Then here. Are your choices from tom. Papa a new policy to just you know ignore those expiration dates in your cans and boxes of food. I'm sure they're fine because they may not be a new supply from jesse klein. Britain's having to return their accents from foreign countries from which they were borrowed or from yasser lester vaccinating dogs instead of people so as to spread the vaccine to everybody. The dogs slobber on the real story of coping with brexit. Well as much as i like jesse story to be and here Some brits giving up their accent t speak midwestern I think i'd probably have to go with the story about ignoring expiration date right. So you're going to choose tom. Papa story about people being encouraged to ignore those pesky in meeting this expiration dates to bring you the real story. We spoke to someone pretty familiar with it. You don't be afraid to taint stands now and he's not finding it's fine. That was dr. emily broad leaves. She's the director of the harvard. Food law and policy clinic talking about the u k plan for old food and assuring. Yeah it's fine really so yes. Tom had the real story as you. So astutely figured out. You've won our game voice if anyone. You might use your voice and also point for tom just for calmly telling you the truth awesome. Thanks so much. Peter thanks so much.

"Transportation on federal property requirements about testing before individuals come over from overseas. We've also were also, of course, stepping up our vaccine distribution and supply production efforts, which will help get it into the arms of more Americans, but He's hopeful that we can take all of these steps on beheld expedite this process, but you're absolutely right. And he said today and I'll repeat here. It's going to take months and months, and it's our responsibility here in the Biden administration, to be honest with the American people about not just the sacrifices that will be required, and the Americans will have to continue to take But also the length of time that it's going to take to really get this pandemic under control. While speaking of of leveling with or being direct with the American people. The president is promising 100 million doses in the first 100 days, But it's our understanding that there were there going to be twice that many doses available because they're already what is it 300 million. That have been promised that are that are on track right now. So are you under playing underestimating what can really be done in the 1st 100 days? Well, the goal we set a bold goal. It was called at the time and still continues to be is 100 million shots in the arms of Americans in the 1st 100 days on. Certainly, we welcome the Expanded production and expedited production of more Zach Vaccine supply. But we also need to ensure that Americans know how to get the vaccine where they can go to get the vaccine that we do A great deal to address vaccine hesitancy something that you heard Dr Fauci talk about today, So it's not a simple we wish Itwas Aziz. Lining everybody up on their way into a football stadium is requires a much greater Herculean operational effort than that. So you're saying it's more than just about the number of Doses available. But I do want to ask you about the period beyond the 100 days because what manufacturers and others federal state health officials are saying is that there just won't be vaccine available until April or or later for the vast majority of Americans is that is the administration acknowledging that Well, Judea. The reason that we laid out all these steps with the president laid out the steps today in yesterday's, because if we don't take steps now, it is going to slow on not just the supply but slow distribution in a couple of months, and we have, as you noted, supply vaccine supply now, But it is something that we need to look ahead. We need to look down the horizon to April May June. To ensure that we're able to continue to get shots into the arms of Americans. So this is a a long term effort. We set this goal for the 1st 100 days because we feel it's important to hold ourselves accountable on hold ourselves to a bold goal. But it is going to continue beyond that. And we need to keep looking in the months ahead beyond the 1st 100 days to make sure we're prepared when we get there. So much else to ask you about Jen Psaki. Certainly the pandemic has affected the economy. The president is talking about an economic relief package. But as you know, Republicans are already pushing back, saying it's not targeted enough, especially He's $1400 direct payments. Is President Biden prepared to compromise as necessary in order to get some more help out there? Well, Judy that the package was designed. It is a large package. Nobody's denying that certainly not the president. But it was designed with the advice of economists and the advice of health experts on what was required. For this moment in the crisis the country is facing. As you noted, it's the pandemic. It's also the economic crisis and about half of the packages for unemployment insurance. There's money in there for vaccine distribution for reopening schools. And the tricky question here is what exactly do you want to cut Because nobody wants to be having a conversation in May or June about why schools aren't re opening as an example. So No, but he's doing what how he thinks the process should work and frankly, how it hasn't worked in some time, which is the president of the United States lays out his proposal lays out the parameters of what he thinks should happen based on the advice of policy experts. Then he has a discussion with Congress. They have a discussion with each other. And rarely does the sausage look exactly like it. It does coming out of the machine as it did going in, and he's certainly prepared for that, But we're at the early stage and will continue to have those conversations in the days ahead. At the same time you have again. This is coming from Republicans who were saying it Z all well and good the president's early days, but Thies first executive orders but is it 16 17 of them look like a wish list? Ah Progressive Wish list, something that That doesn't sound very much like the President Rhee outreach for Unity if, in other words they're saying if he really wants to work with us, why is he putting such a agenda out there that we can't go along with? Well, I think the question there. Judy is what exactly are they opposed to do They not think there's a climate crisis, or do they not think the critics I should say Not all Republicans far from it? Do they not think that Americans should wear masks? I mean, you look at the polling, and that's not what it says. So you know, I think the president's outreach and success and engaging with members of the Republican Party is going to be judged by his words and by his actions. On that is going to be whether he can work with them. Listen to them here from them, take feedback from them on legislation and find a path forward. But the executive actions that he proposed were what he felt are essential actions to take immediately to bring relief to the American people and overturned some of the most detrimental steps of the prior administration. But he's pretty confident they're still a path forward with Republicans. One other thing, Jen Psaki, and that is the Senate Republican leader, Mitch McConnell is saying today light today. That he believes the impeachment trial for former President Trump should be delayed until the middle of February to give President Trump time to pull his defenses together is president Biden prepared to see that wait. Well, Judy. The president's focuses primarily on the covert relief package that he announced just a week ago. And that's what he's having conversations with members of both parties about. We're going to leave the mechanics and.

"Feel will this time alienated by what they see as the establishment though there's sort of an irony to that because currently he's a front runner so I don't know they have to kind of reset themselves that way but there are a number of as Joe said sort of more. Moderate Centre left Democrats who are people who certainly believe in access to affordable health care that climate change changes a problem who were quite progressive on a lot of issues that are not either as progressive as Bernie Sanders or don't like some of the tactics around some of the people who support him. Who would have a long journey to get there and I think like Joe? I don't know that Bernie. Sanders can't win. I wouldn't say that but I think there is there. There is a challenge. Not a lot of people are talking about which is bringing a big part of the party too and Democrats across the country to be with him if he's the nominee And I think that's sort of undervalued. L. You'd sometimes let me ask both of you. This who know far more about democratic politics than I do and with looking at how two thousand sixteen went the four people that we have talked about the most in this conversation. And I think that we're talking about largely in the broader conversation. Right now are Bernie Biden Pete and Bloomberg and they're all all four white men and what part of that is just. The nature of who seems to be aligning with the voters. What part of that is it? Possible that the The primary voters and voters in general are reacting to trumpism and think that a white male is the best shot that they've got against trump and everything that he was able to pull into the two thousand thousand sixteen election. What part of this is kind of repeating sins of the past in two thousand sixteen and dealing with not treating women the same way as candidates as we probably I should in that includes both vetting them but also putting them on the same pedestal as some of the white males that have gotten the nomination? What's going on here? Why are we still talking about four white men when there are also women that are in this game and they don't seem to be at the top of it? Well I mean to be Fair Elizabeth. Warren just got third in Iowa and she may get she. She may do top three in New Hampshire as well. She is still in the race. I think she's got an uphill. Climb right I think it's important. Not to over generalize and I hear this a lot from women and friends with women in my family you know. Oh it's all sexist ebony just hates women look sexism is alive and well. I've lived in experience that myself off certainly in politics certainly double standards. But I think you have to look at the individual candidates to see why they are where they are there is a nostalgia that has helped. It's Joe Biden Right. He is a white man and maybe that speaks to where our party has been but people have hung on because he was Brock Obama's vice president because there there's warm feelings toward him he may be in a spot because he's a man but I think that's the biggest help to him. Mike Bloomberg has are Gargantuan A.. And amount of money that's why he is where he is. He hasn't even really campaigns publicly. He's done great ads. He spent a lot of money on air mayor. Pete is kind of young and I think of all the candidates. He is in a very talented of speaker and interviewer and somebody who is publicly glee presents himself in kind of unique way. I think he's uniquely talented in that way is not to say the others aren't but I think it's more about some of the individuals Widened Kamala Harris make it farther is part of it. Because she's a woman yet probably but as part of it because nobody knew where she stood on certain issues and people were just just not quite sure I think that's a factor too right is Elizabeth Warren. where she is? Because she's a woman and not had Bernie maybe but also I think her flip-flopping on Medicare for all and people not being certain where she has on healthcare was a huge factor. So I I think. Sexism is a factor a hard to measure one. Unfortunately I don't think it's the only factor in my view but you think Joe. I agree with what John was saying. On some of the candidates days I think Camel Harris never quite was able to articulate why she was running. That's that is like a flashing yellow light to voters. I think there's a bit of sexism with was with warrant She's had some missteps which she's also run a good campaign and I think the problem is if if you know and Jen I know you know Senator Warren from working in the White House. She's a hard charger. She doesn't take any crap from anyone she's direct and and can be a bull in a China shop which again for a man is seen as a strength and I think for for women. It's still a problem and I think she's tried to soften that with a kind of enthusiasm and you rather than the Authentic Elizabeth Warren who just basically says I know what we should do. And I'm not gonNA take any shit from anybody we're GonNa get this done and I do think there's still an element that that is more acceptable from a man like Donald trump than it is from a woman candidate. I've got this whole donny. Deutsch comment from late last week on morning joe where he just talks about her being too strident. Yeah I mean the thing is she hasn't been strident she's she's been enthusiastic and happy and I've got a plan for this when I think if you've worked with her you know she really is someone who it is smart prepared and doesn't take any crap from anyone. Yeah and there is sexism. I can't I think you're out Joan. Maybe view on this is is kind of it. She was leading in Iowa right in the fall and then it changed and do you think that's should be attributed the two people saying. Oh wait hold on. She's a woman or health care or a combo or her changing her approach. I mean I do agree with you. I went to her event on Sunday and it was joyful. I mean she was so energetic I was thinking to myself man. She's had a lot of coffee or tea or something. Maybe that's not who she authentically is because she's you said and having worked with her she is kind of. I'm really smart. I'm not gonNA take any shit and that might be what the wing of the party is looking for that. It is a Warren Bernie Wing. I don't know. But what do you think shifted. Well I think a couple things one is I think she. Unsuccessfully tried to broaden her appeal and in doing that lost her base to Bernie And this is where it gets complicated because everybody thinks that Bernie and Elizabeth Warren fight for voters Pete Joe Biden and Amy Cobra. Char fight for voters and it's not that simple Biden End Sanders fight for working working class voters non college educated warn and Buddha judge fight for college educated White voters. So you know we're being a little simplistic by putting them in It's act lanes. But I think she tried to broaden her appeal to soon And it didn't work but listen. I think the simplest explanation explanation is she poked the bear at the wrong time and the bears Bernie Sanders and his supporters and she accused him of something. Which I'm certain certain in my mind he did but it awakened this part of the party? That thinks we have to burn the whole house down. And all of a sudden she was the person who was the fake revolutionary as opposed to the real revolutionary. And if you look at that debate where she took him on including the leak the day before her. Her numbers have dropped precipitously since then So it's everything's a combination but I think there's an element of all the things we've talked about here And and I do believe the bottom line is she. Is the one candidate who has been treated unfairly. Like Hillary Clinton was in two thousand sixteen. Because she's a woman. Can I ask you one question about one of the things you just said if you if the bottom falls out for Biden Do you think that helps Bernie more or pete more more. Because to your point I think the collective view It would be that it would help pete more but maybe that's wrong you have to then then consider where Mike Bloomberg is As we get later into the process voters become more sophisticated did not because they live in Georgia versus live in Iowa. More stuff has happened. It gets more real. The people later on in a contested nomination the nation process their votes more consequential so I think if by Nova sudden moves aside. People won't vote for Pete Buddha Jeff just because they like them just because he's a fresh face they're really going to have to grapple with this guys. Thirty seven thirty eight years old. He's never gotten more than eight thousand votes Spoi- we're taking a big risk putting them up against Donald Trump. That's the risk factor. If Biden is out of the picture. Mike Bloomberg is someone who we'll be able to explore that potential weakness in bondage. I mean again. We don't know what's going to happen the reason we don't do a national primaries for exactly this because this vets that's our candidates this puts them through a steps that shows okay. You've got to win this way this week when that way next week and hopefully at the end of the process this we'll have our strongest candidates are nominee doesn't always work but that's the press the thought process so joe. You touched on exactly where I want to go next. which is I want to talk about Mayor Mike and ask both of you with as campaign veterans talk about how much money Bloomberg spent based on the public filing that? We've seen so far in the first few months and how that compares both to the campaigns now that exists in and your experience in the past Joe you WanNa start here. This one's yours okay. So I mean I don't have the numbers in front of me. You May. But he's spent a shitload load of money. Spent eleven million dollars on a super bowl ad and he spends money in early states. There were reports that he doubled the AD spending in California the day after the Iowa caucus this matters because guess what people see Television Ads and yes. There's obviously other forms of advertising which I know they're are investing in as well. I mean one of the stresses that you have within a campaign is whether you're going to have enough money especially going into Super Tuesday where voters voters are more sophisticated. There is more that has happened but it is still more like a national primary than anything that has come before. It and candidates candidates can't reach every county and be meeting voters nine times like they do in some of the I four states so things like being able to go on the air with ads ads and his ads are good. You Know People Watch them and they like them and I think a lot of them have been very smart. That makes a huge difference. Also he has going to pay pay his campaign staff through November. He's never going to be at a point where they can't afford to where they have to pull staff out of a state because they can't can't afford and we're already seeing that with some of the candidates were they are moving staff to a different early state. That's never a good sign by the way people sometimes come back from that but that's never a good sign. The last thing I'll say is you know even as just a Democrat who's sitting here in Washington. It feels like a relief that the guy has so much money that you wouldn't have to worry about the fundraising component of it because Donald trump is raising so much money and spending so much money online. He will have every resource he needs so even just not having that be. A factor is a huge relief. But you've probably have something more sophisticated than not to say. Joe I'm just giving my gut instinct here. You stole my phrase Shitload of money. I mean that's it. I was talking to some people as he was getting in the race and they were basically saying listen. He's serious. He's going to spend a billion dollars. That's a lot of money I now here. He's thinking about spending two billion dollars. I think in the last cycle orme might have been the cycle before that that on all racist spent by all candidates on Federal Racist Congress Senate Presidential Three. Three billion dollars was spent so he's talking about spending what everyone else in the entire country spent and I think it's worth digging in a little bit too wary spending wing it. Why and how? TV ADS are great with no one else is running TVs..

"Welcome to words matter with Katie. Barlow and Joe Lockhart welcome to words matter. I'm Katie Barlow. Our goal is to promote objective reality as a wise man once said had everyone is entitled to their own opinion not their own facts. Words have power and words have consequences. Our guest today is a campaign veteran and former White House. Communications director under President Obama Jen PSAKI has also worked on presidential senate and gubernatorial campaigns in among other places Iowa. Jen is also a CNN then political analyst. Jen psaki welcome to words matter. Oh great to be here. I will tell you I once had an Iowa driver's license of because my wallet was stolen. Alan and I had to retake the Iowa driver's test so just sharing that to just add to my validity of. Yeah that's real deal. How was parallel parking on Iowa streets or did you even have to to do that? I did a little bit of it. There are cities in Iowa over one. Okay there's lots of restaurants and a great culture there. Yeah I didn't have to do that but I remember number some of the questions being a little different than what. I recalled from taking my testing Connecticut growing anyway. So you know Iowa very very well have. The driver's license sends and everything that goes with that so last week the rest of us we learned that the Iowa caucus is really only important as a political ceremony. And there are. You're a tiny number of delegates at stake in both the nature of a caucus and of Iowa. Democrats is not all that representative of the Democratic primary voters as a whole nationwide but it is the start of the primary season and in the past the results at least gave analysts. Some indication of voter intensity and which campaigns were doing in well in which ones might be in trouble so obviously last week was very different and maybe the last but from what. We do know what it did last week. Tell you about voter. Intensity in which campaigns are doing well and which ones might have a problem on their hands well to get it out of the way okay I think our Ip caucuses and caucuses system. I think they'll be serious and good debate about whether they should continue. And hopefully they'll be a massive have moved to the primary which we've already seen some of that since two thousand sixteen in terms of the candidates and the outcome it it's not just about who won quote unquote because it really is about delegates Pete and Bernie both came out and sort of declared victory in different ways I will say Bernie was expected to win by a lot more and he had been talking about creating a movement not a campaign and bringing a whole new set of people into the system we saw from entrance polls that maybe about a third were new. We don't know that they're all Bernie people but the turnout numbers were closer to twenty sixteen than two thousand eight. There could have been a lot of reasons for that may have been that people didn't care they just know the vote for a Democrat against trump Could have been that. There were too many candidates and they couldn't decide hard to know but that didn't feel like a great outcome for Democrats to me for Pete. It was a very good night and I. I don't think anybody can or should take that away from him. I mean he he won the Iowa caucus us. He didn't know until a couple of days later but he still looks like he got a bump from that in New Hampshire he certainly got a fundraising bump he looks to see. And we'll see what happens on Tuesday to maybe be on track to beat Biden in New Hampshire That's a big step for him. They're valid questions about his lack of support among African Americans but for now he's chugging along young and I think it's fair to say a surpassed expectations he also brought seemingly New People on the second round in who were supporting other candidates who came to him and that's it's a good talking point for him that he can bring people together. I think it was a very bad night for Biden. Anybody who was who knows his campaign A. and knows the people on his campaign well knows they did not expect to do well. And even with all these postmortems anyone who's really close to what was actually going to happen there and the strategy knew he wasn't GonNa do well. I think they were hoping to do better than fourth. No question the problem for him is that he has a fundraising issue. He doesn't have a good good donor list online. He's doesn't look like he's going to do well in New Hampshire. I mean the numbers have been trending down. We'll see what what happens. And he needed sort of a momentum bump and Pete beating him is a is a real problem and then Warren I would say okay but a little disappointing. I think many people on on her campaign. I went to one of her events on Sunday. She did well. And there's a lot of excitement people her supporters lover. But she had to prove she was better Bernie Than Bernie. The and. I don't think she did that and I don't see how she does that. In New Hampshire. So it's like what's the Warren State so I don't know a lot a lot to take out of its Puerto Remember. It's only I. There's many to go here right so at the beginning. You mentioned going into New Hampshire. It's kind of Pete with his bump and Bernie and that will change as we get down the road towards South Carolina. They kind of represent something I want to ask you and Joe about actually. It appears like there is kind of these two roads to the nomination. There's the kind of more Progressive Lane. The Ultra Progressive Lane and then the more moderate lane is. Is it more complicated than that. The road to the nomination. And how do you see the ideological battle within the Democratic Attic Party. I think that's an element of it and I love to hear what Joe has to say here to. Of course I I think it's more complicated than that. If it were Biden and Bernie. I think it might might be a little more defined that way although I do think it's and I worked for. Rock Obama freight years. Any of these candidates are going to be a more progressive candidate than the last Democratic president. Who People at times that that was way too progressive and sometimes not progressive enough? So that's a fair argument. It's also about sort of what their messages are and I'm not. I don't either demographic graphic questions that I think are valid. Pete is which he's criticized by a lot of Bernie supporters and warned supporters. Many of whom at least on twitter which is certainly not the definition one of the world rising to viscerally hate mayor Pete. He's a is a bit more for kind of bringing people together and sort of seeing both sides sides of issues that to some on the left of the party is not appealing they feel like it is not bold enough for the time. We're living in especially people who are you're young and Feel like he is ironically representing their generation even though he is much closer to their generation than Bernie me on the other side. You Have Bernie. Who wants to start a revolution that is quite appealing? To many many young people People of Color people who feel Oh that the system has been unfair and Washington's messed up and they just need to rip it all up so they're they're very different in that regard to sure there's elements of that that are progressive versus versus moderate. But I also think it's about kind of what they're representing but Joe. What do you think was telling me? I'm totally wrong. It's a complicated as that. Yeah Yeah I mean this was sound familiar to Katie. 'cause I've touched on this before but I think there's a general misconception of WHO Democrats are as a party if you look across crossed the scale the most progressive tend to get the bulk of the attention for example in two thousand eighteen. The the the most important story story was that in the forty districts where Democrats won and Swan Control of the House. It was a more moderate centre. Left candidate Who beat a more ultra progressive candidate in the primary positioning them to win against a Republican but the story that night was about a o c and the squad and the far left when in fact? That wasn't really the story I think Iowa basically for all of its problems in caucuses our problem problem the way they tried to organize this was a problem but I think it reflected where Democrats are. The Democratic Party is a center left party with a significant and important but smallish for smaller ultra progressive wing to it. So you know Sanders I I think represents at the Best I think Elizabeth Warren has tried to straddle the line a little bit. And I think that's where she's run into some problems by trying to move a little bit and broaden her appeal to purist and the party have just moved from her two Bernie who is a purist but the bulk of the party's sixty sixty five percent is center left You know what people are calling. Moderate and genuine made a really important point there. which is that if you compare for them to our last President Barack Obama they are more progressive than Barack Obama? That doesn't make them good or bad. It just is a fact and I think the poll of the media and the way the debates went and all of that pulled the party too far to the left at least created the perception and I think I would demonstrated that the the add up Biden Club. Hr Mayor Pete. The party is what we've said it is which is moderate to center left the issue. Though moving forward word is we have several good candidates who represent that part of the party and I think increasingly one candidate Bernie Sanders who represents the other so if they continue to split their votes that favors sanders and we may get a nominated doesn't reflect where most of the party is and that's the problem again. I'm not saying sanders can't be trump. Were won't be trump. It's just you want to use the nominating process to get a candidate. The represents percents the bulk of the party. And we may not have that here and we may see the demise of Joe Biden in New Hampshire and Nevada and South Carolina. So one would think that clears the lane for Mayor Pete if he becomes the alternative to Sanders. But of course it doesn't because we've got Mike Bloomberg out spending ten million dollars a day so it's GonNa be really interesting to watch and JEN picked up on this early in the conversation. Which is the the party is diverse? The voters in New Hampshire are not diverse. So we're just GONNA have to wait and see as much as we want to bring this to a conclusion so we can concentrate our efforts on trump. It is not going to happen quickly. It's going to take months and months and it's unclear whether whether we will nominate someone who reflects the bulk of where the Democrats are. Yeah I I would just echo. I mean so many things you said but one one of them being the last point which is if Biden implodes which he very well could. I mean he could easily get fourth in New Hampshire easily really. I think that's even where he's polling. And if he doesn't win South Carolina where I think has a lot of his supporters nationally. Maybe kind of holding on hope for to the great people are paying attention then he could implode and then I think it elongate sit. There are so many people who could kind of surge at different moments and while we have this great crop of candidates candidates there are legitimate questions about many of them and then another Joe said I would say I was only in Iowa for two days. That's not a long time but but from talking to people there at events and kind of around and people just I have known from having worked there before it's not just that Bernie Sanders supporters..
