President Biden says he has been in touch with the governors in Arkansas, Illinois and Delaware to offer federal help. CBS News brief on Tom footy. Casey BS news time is two 32. Last week state wildlife officials announced that the annual commercial crab fishing season will end April 15th. That's two and a half months earlier than usual. Kcbs as Jeffrey Shaw reports many crabbers also fish for salmon, and they face a tough time staying in business because salmon season was already canceled for 2023. It was exactly one month ago at bodega bay before the announcement of the salmon season closure was made that fishermen Mike satori told me this. It's not salmon it's catastrophic. I mean, economically for the fishermen, the businesses and everything that goes with it. A few days later, salmon season was canceled, but crab fishermen were still at sea, now that season has been curtailed by two weeks after receiving a late start. Fisherman's wharf crab fisherman Nick Krieger says that hurts in a normal scenario or previous years we would have been able to crowd till the end of June, which would really help to mitigate the effects of not having a salmon season. Glenn Spain is executive director of the Pacific Coast federation of fishermen's associations, he's calling on governor Newsom to step in and help. We need the governor to declare a fishery failure and ask the secretary of commerce to declare that a basically a fishery disaster. That then qualifies as under the law to go to Congress and try to get at least some minimal amount of money to at least keep our infrastructure going. Without assistance, Spain believes a lot of fishermen will leave the industry. In the north bay, Jeffrey show became CBS. A group of deserving students from west Oakland middle school are taking off today for an immersive trip to Hawaii. Kcbs is Mike dewald reports, the group will learn about culture and conservation. A dozen students are taking part, traveling to Maui in Oahu, where they'll be hosted for the unique opportunity. Scott tatman is with state bags, who partnered with Alaska airlines on the project. He says it's all about bringing travel to young people where it might otherwise have been out of reach. You know, a lot of families just get on a plane and go to the airport and take off and go somewhere incredible. Yet there are a lot of families who don't get that opportunity and travel is such a mind opening experience. Students were required to write an essay about why they should go, Tatiana will be on the trip. She says the group was called into the principal's office. It was very nerve racking, but we didn't know. I thought it was going to be like, they're going to tell us that we didn't get in. Sierra says she's looking forward to the one of a kind experience. I never been on an airplane nor been outside the state, so this will be a life-changing experience to finally experience other cultures. Catalan is hoping to do more trips. He says being exposed to the outside world is key to growth and leadership. When you meet new people and smell new things and kind of taste new things, it just is so mind opening. Mike dewald. Yes. "Brief, I'm Tom fody. CBS News time one 32 here at kcbs and our news watch continues with the news that crab fishermen, who also harvest salmon, say they're suffering a double whammy that threatens their livelihood. Jeffrey schaub reports a shortened crab season and the cancellation of this year's commercial salmon season has some fishermen selling their boats and giving up the profession for good. Get Krieger captains the Ariana rose out of San Francisco's fisherman's wharf. He says the decision to end a crab sees an early hurt. In a normal scenario or previous years, we would have been able to crab until the end of June. But the season was curtailed to protect humpback whales which will soon begin entering California's coastal waters and with a growing whale population more and more had become entangled in crab fishing lies. You know, there's going to be a lot of boats that don't really have any income until next winter and possibly next January. Krieger says fishermen are sympathetic and want to protect the whales, but there's a double whammy because chinook and king salmon stocks are so low. The state canceled this year's commercial salmon season. Imagine going 9 or ten months without any income and then also having all the bills and having a vote. Three fishermen's organizations from California are calling on governor Newsom and the state legislature to make an emergency declaration, freeing up state and federal assistance funding for boat operators, crew and others.
