"Is Like a brown. I'm an investigative reporter with the Miami Herald For the past three years, I've investigated the case of Jeffrey Epstein. He's a college dropout, the Brooklyn born son of the grounds keeper who went on to teach math at one of the world's most prestigious private schools. How did the same man go from representing one single client's wealth to becoming a self proclaimed billionaire with his own private island? How did he become a friend to presidents to scientists and royalty? Jeffrey Epstein killed himself rather than face justice, but his victims are refusing to let this case rest. And neither will I. I will continue to cover this story and the people who helped him as.

"Investigators in Palm Beach, Florida began uncovering dark secrets. A lot of Girls knew about it, and a lot of girls were doing it. If anybody asks if you're over the age of 18 just go ahead and go with it. There was a wealthy man in Palm Beach who was offering young girls away to make money. That man was Jeffrey Epstein. And he had set up a system designed to bring him underage girls. Local police and the federal government would investigate and by their account, find dozens of victims. Epstein would become one of the world's most infamous predators, a man who could have faced decades in prison but served just 13 months in his own wing of a county jail. Why would you cut this deal with Jeffrey Epstein? Epstein's abuse would span years and cross state lines. New York Palm Beach, New Mexico, Paris. Virgin Islands and each one of those residences is an alleged crime scene. I'm a bee sees Marc Graham, a large and with a team of journalists from the ABC News investigative unit. Yeah, we don't We don't we have any of that. We never understood that like like, why would I not what would I consider the good stuff? And why would I save that for someone to pay and then have the bad stuff to listen to breathe as long as the teaser trying to get people buy stuff you put out the crappy stuff. Yeah. Absolutely. No, no, no. Who knows? I don't think we're going to have events this year, dude. I'm just going to get him. Yeah, I was actually talking with talking with Fred earlier today. The name is Fred Brown that loves to scare the shit out of us. And he basically said hey if you have any intention of doing anything outside of your home before like Leo spring next year. Yeah. You should totally do that before Halloween. So I got I a new Fred is Bodie and Point Break like his whole entire life. He's been waiting for the 50 foot wave the fifty years ago and he's been doing a little shit. He's been playing around with a little ship for a while. I was who I was explained to somebody a lot of business lunch. And then I go off these kind of like Bodie from Point Break and I know why go he's been surfing his whole life. Just kind of having fun. He's getting paid, you know, he's doing his thing but that 50 year storm and he's in the middle of it right now. He's like dead. This is this is his glory. The ghosts are in downtown Manhattan, you know, hey laser beams that I've been working on my whole life. I mean not not entirely inaccurate. I'm sure he's yeah, he's definitely but hey, I just appreciate him not using politics off all these questions. I am tired of when I say you it's not you but like you sure it isn't Bob's Tire. There's so many people that I used to really like a lot of like when you know, cordially they weren't like good friends, but I would see him chords go. Oh, hey now, it's like where's the unfollow button dude there so I got unfriended. I got unfriended by somebody that we helped find not one not two but three different jobs for over the years because she shared a post from a qanon group and it was all like, yep. Clinton with Jeffrey Epstein and it was although you know, the hashtag saved the children thing and all that kind of stuff and I saw I replied and then I nested replies with you know, there's something missing from this post office and every post I put a picture of trump with Epstein or you know Millenia with Epstein or you know Trump with you know, whatever and she and she like got all snarky with me about it. She's like, I don't know why you're trolling on this like that's you know, this isn't a practical thing. I'm like well but it is cuz like you have you all pedophiles matter, they should all be identified and crucified. Yeah home and she was like, no I'm like you're sharing something from a qanon group and she's like, I don't even know what qanon is. I'm like, all right. Well, here's what qanon is and then she unfriended me. Oh my God, by sea by it. I don't even know what that shit is as far I'm concerned. What is it born out of Fortune? Is it one of those toilet groups, you know absolutely is yeah. So all they're basically doing is trying to get the news to talk about it then they sit at home and smile. Well, I mean, it's actually it's actually much deeper than that. They they are pretty much dedicated to Trump wage and they are dedicated too distracting for four and so there and so hence the sharing of pictures. No, foreign legitimately like they believe Trump is working to bring down the government from the inside and that he is sharing. It's it's this weird like Messiah complex thing they have going on with them. And so that hence the the, you know, that one group that you shared from it only had pictures of like the clintons or Obama Or democrats with Selective selective outrage, whatever wage well it's but it's not selective outrage. It's because they're trying and because part of their stated goals is deflecting any and all criticisms criticisms about whatever Trump has to be doing by trying to pile on the pedophile stuff.
"jeffrey epstein" Discussed on BROKEN: Jeffrey Epstein
"This might be weird to say is the host of a show about Jeffrey Epstein, but I don't really care about him. Here's what I care about. The people who be abused and who are now demanding something that seems so simple. They want our legal system and our society to say very clearly, you don't get to sexually abuse girls for years and get away with it because you are rich and powerful. On this season a broken we're going to spend a lot of time with some of those victims those survivors today you'll hear about Virginia Roberts Jofre. You've likely seen her on. TV. or in that photo of Prince Andrew with his arm around her bare teenage waste. In the years since she, I told her story in two thousand eleven. Virginia has grown into a unique figure in our cultural landscape, a sex abuse victim who never stopped speaking out. And her willingness to relive and recount the awful things that happened to her and to keep the pressure on her alleged abusers has spurred real action. Her statements about being traffic. Prince Andrew led him to step back from public life. This week we go on a cross country journey with Virginia. Following. Her as she reaches out to some of the people she knew back when she was under epsteins control. She wants the people who witnessed obscene sexual abuse operation to come forward and admit what they saw publicly. There's a lot of them Epstein had. So many enablers in the sex trafficking operation. Virginia's particularly interested in epsteins household employees, not the handful of assistance who actively ran the sex trafficking ring their potential criminal defendants, and we'll probably never talk. But there are other staffers people who didn't directly participate organiz the sex abuse, but we're in a position to see so much. Jeffrey, had so many people so many moving parts at everyone his properties, the mansions in New York, and Palm Beach The island in the Caribbean the ranch in New Mexico, these were people like butlers. Chauffeurs and chefs, and then the pilots would fly in from one house to another at new. York probably had about fifteen how staff all these employees plus the guests everybody who went into Jeffrey's house news going on you couldn't be a pizza delivery boy and walk epsteins houses and not know what's going on. You walk into the houses naked pictures everywhere young girls everywhere old do not married like it's not hard to just put tuned to together. Really. Virginia. Says most of the sexual abuse she endured occurred behind closed doors. But what she describes happening in the public areas would shock most people we would you know lay out completely naked hundred percent naked Jeffrey did not like Tan lines at all, he wanted Tan bodies he wanted petite bodies he wanted like prepubescent parties. So no pure care and no Tan Lines Virginia said, she spent more than two years under obscene thumb not only being forced to perform erotic massages nonstop. But helping him to do things that no able bodied adult man should need assistance with like putting his socks and shoes on for him soaping him in the shower tucking him into bed. It was a horror show. She only escaped in two thousand and two when she eloped with her now husband. I started this brand new life in Australia I learned how to cook eggs and do laundry I know that sounds stupid. But you know I learned those little simple things like that was that's what made me happy and I was so happy just to move on with that. But by two thousand eleven Virginia realized, she couldn't let epsteins crimes go unpunished. She couldn't just move on what changed for me was giving birth to these beautiful children that I have a knowing a love that I've never known before. As you probably heard, Virginia has claimed in court Filings Epstein forced her to have sex with a number of powerful men all of whom denied it including. The lawyer Alan Dershowitz Prince Andrew Former New Mexico. Governor Bill Richardson and former Senator George. Mitchell. In mind these were all public figures not paying any price for their actions. She felt a need to call them to account. She didn't think getting justice would take all that Long Epstein ran a massive sex trafficking operation in which he allegedly many men and a handful of women sexually abused dozens probably hundreds of girls she thought the evidence she gave would be enough to lock them up. But for years, she saw such meagre progress. How could it be that nobody cared about Epstein's crimes justice isn't just people going to jail. I think justice to me looks like we need to change the system. Then our own Julie K Brown wrote her explosive series in the Miami. Herald. In the world finally agreed with her this is horrible something must be done. And few things were. F- scene was arrested of course, but he died in custody Alex cost the former US attorney who struck an absurdly lenient deal with Epstein back in two thousand seven lost his cabinet post. Elaine Maxwell was indicted on charges all of which she denies related to her role in epsteins abuse of underage girls. Prince Andrew had to step back from his public duties though it's easy to find a regular strap shots of his very lovely life. But what about the other people who enabled participated in epsteins crimes? I pray I wish that the truth comes out about everybody who participated enabled and watched obscene Maxwell get away with trafficking. So many of US spiders they've been getting away with it for decades. So Virginia asked us to help her she said, she wants to reach out to some of those staffers those people she knew back. Then the people who witnessed epsteins operation in action she wants them to talk now. She needs some for specific legal reasons. She's embroiled in two lawsuits and she hopes they can help her out. And she needs them for other more personal reasons. She wants many victims of abuse want someone.
Trevor Noah condemns Trump's COVID-19 Response
"Back to the daily social distancing show and yes, we are still social distancing pretty soon the top of my head is going to be six feet away from my forehead. That's the plan. That's how I'm going to measure my distance from people hey, what's going on becks they s see you know the reason we still social distancing is because the coronavirus is still spreading, and this is thanks partly to people not taking it seriously. So let's catch up in another installment of our ongoing segments the pandemic. I our pandemic coverage, Hicks off in Utah State in desperate need of the l shaped tetris piece. We now know that one of the easiest ways to stop the spread of coronavirus is just to have everybody where a mosque unfortunately telling everyone to wear a mosque is also one of the easiest ways to spread idiocy after more than one weeks in schools have reopened in Washington County Liberty, action coalition hosted a rally in front of the school district building. This morning up to a thousand people showed up saying the children being forced to wear masks in classrooms is illegal and even unconstitutional. Now have gathered here in front of the Washington County. Administration building calling for. The end of a mouse mandate. If we want to wear a mask, that's fine we can take care of ourselves when George Floyd was saying I can't breathe and then he died and We're wearing a mask and we say I can't breathe but we're for story anyway I'll tell you another reason I'd hate mass most child molesters love them God. Damn. These people were crazy. In fact, you know what they should have. Let them storm the school building because maybe they would have accidentally learn something like I'm still trying to process everything that was going on at that rally no matter how many times I watched that video i. still find new things to process. Like that video is the closest thing I've seen to facebook comments happening in real life I like individual freedom wipe people are the real George Floyd. Happy. Birthday Martha Mask wearing was invented by Jeffrey Epstein. Oh and here's another reason it's hard for Americans. To get the pandemic under control even places do have rules for social distancing. This is how some people follow them growing concerns over Cova clusters especially on college campuses in Ohio police cited several people in a house near Miami University during the Labor Day weekend body camera footage captured a stunning exchange between an officer and a student or there's So, you probably know where I wanNA talk to too many people but you know the the ordinances ten people. Yeah. How many people are in the house? Twenty twenty people inside. You Might WanNa start clearing off the I've never seen this before there's an input on the computer that you tested positive for covid. When was this was? A week ago are you supposed to be quarantining? That's why I'm on my house do you have other people here and you? You're positive for Kovin? We WanNA, keep the site open. That's why. We're so screwed. The main part of quarantine isn't about being at your house, my friend. It's about being away from other people so that you don't spread the disease I'm scheduled. Know where this guy puts a condom on his buddy at this point I'm glad it's just corona virus. Can you imagine this dude handling Ebola wait so I'm not supposed to eat a monkey. Because I got to tell you there was some confusion there. Oh and just by the way. Watching this police officers body cam footage was like virtual reality game called white privilege because this kid was clearly breaking the law but the cups tone of voice sounds like he was telling him today specials Hieaux could I interest you and not breaking the law today? Get a few minutes to think it over and I'll come back so. Some people are misinformed some people a crazy and some people are both. People. Like Donald jaundiced trump president of the United States and one man super spreader overnight at a packed indoor rally president trump breaking Nevada's covid restrictions to court voters. In the key battleground state, we're going to win to that speaking to a throng of mostly mask Liz supporters, his first indoor rally nearly three months. The state prohibits gatherings of more than fifty people but trump defiant of the governor comes after you which you shouldn't be doing. I'll be with you all the while those behind the president and in front of the cameras wore masks, most of the crowd did not. But that didn't bother supporters like meal. Christianson who camped out overnight I'm not wearing a mask that's a shows that I trust my president. Okay look. I. Get why trump fan would have trusted trump before. But how do you still trust this off the he admitted that he's been downplaying the coronavirus this whole time I don't get it. I really don't get what do you mean you trust and this is like believing the Nigerian e mail scam off the he tells you that he's a Nigerian email scam although I'm a small time criminal pretending to be a wealthy prince. Will Send me some money. You know what? I liked this guy's honesty I will send him fifty thousand dollars and as for trump. How you call yourself the presence of law and order when you openly flouting the law and not even for a noble reason. No, it's just so that he can spend nineteen minutes ranting about how vegetables invented by the deep state and Hillary. Clinton and this isn't just about breaking the law. What Donald Trump is doing here is actually dangerous. The last time trump held an indoor rally. He lost twenty five percent of his black friends. So there you have it. Everyone from college students to grandma's to the president himself is helping this virus continue spreading. But I guess. That's the genius of America's Corona Virus Response. Unlike other countries that are preparing for the second wave America realized you don't have to deal with the second wave. If you never get over the first.
Bad News For Prince Andrew As New Witness Comes Forward
"Let's move onto Prince Andrew can remind us how he started this year. He had been basically sacked from the royal family which we take subduing. He was essentially stripped of all his royal duties after his completely disastrous Newsnight interview y have you decided to talk now? because. There is no good time. To Talk, about Mr Epstein and. All things associated in Andrews Newsnight interview his big defense really aside from the fact that he of how they can't sweat and he's a big patron of the pizza. Express woking is that he didn't really know Jeffrey Epstein he claims he only knew him through his friend Glenn, bloom it through his girlfriend. Back, in nineteen, ninety nine, who an I'd known her since she. In the UK this is all Remember that it was his girlfriend. That was the key element in this he was the. Plus. One to some extent in an expert. You through a birthday party for since girlfriend then Maxwell at Sandringham. No shooting weekend a shooting weeks straightforward straightforward for choosing weekend. Despite the fact you know Jeffrey Epstein was at the Palace went to Epstein. Manson had dinner for him. He stayed with Epstein because because Andrew just couldn't find a central Manhattan hotel he's very convenient epsteins mentioned it was a convenient place to stay. I mean I've gone through this in my mind so many times. At the end of the day. with the benefit of all the hindsight that one can have. It was definitely the wrong thing to do is you say that interview was a disaster foundry and he was forced to withdraw from his rural Gt's I'm imagining heat hopes that would draw a line under the whole thing for him but then in July galet maxwell was arrested. The risks are simply too great. The words of the judge refusing bail this evening to maximum the one time girlfriend an alleged accomplice of the sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, might saw pleaded not guilty the hearing by video link on charges she helped recruit and groom minors as young as fourteen. So she was arrested in her strange though Bolthole and a few weeks later, a bunch of documents unsealed from a two thousand fifteen civil action brought against her by Virginia. Robert Scott Free and price price whose name pops up again it's Jews You know a lot of the allegations in these documents were already known but what is new is the allegation that? Forced Virginia Robert Scott Free to have sex with Prince Andrew as a way to gather incriminating evidence against him. And then on top of that, this month of witnesses come forward claiming to have seen the Duke of York, at trump nightclub on the night he insisted in the Newsnight interview that he was at Pizza Express in woking why would you remember that? So specifically, why would you remember a pizza best birthday in being because going to pizza express in working is an unusual thing for me to do. So he obviously hit denies everything but the circle is definitely tightening around Andrew. US. Law Enforcement has said repeatedly they want to talk to him that he has been cooperative a war of words as I'm sure you know has broken out between Prince Andrew and the US authorities investigating sex offender Jeffrey. Exiting The prince claims that he has offered to help that inquired eat city times but this is something the American prosecutors deny effectively calling him a liar the palace hopefully insisted this is untrue and US law enforcement has repeated it. So this is where we are at the moment. Do you think this puts more pressure on Andrew to cooperate with the investigation? Me The idea of any member of the royal family cooperating Larry's but yes, I mean absolutely. But I mean the fact that he was saying such stuff in that interview emily weightless without realizing how terrible the sounded I mean just shows he has no sense of consequences for his actions. I'm Jay his sin said, he regrets his ill-judged Association with Epstein. But as you point out, these aren't incredibly serious allegations and yet everybody feels like his story that dozen attract as many column, Inches Harry, and Meghan. Let's I think this is the thing when talking about the role families so much tension and I've just done two is focused on Harry Megan and the stupid decisions they make in his make it actually lady Macbeth is very telling for example, the mail there's certain Cole missed the male who I'm not gonNA pollute podcast listener's ears with his name, but he is completely obsessive. Meghan. Markle. Interest. Rates. Endless combs about her I. Don't like to own Andrew or something Sierra. Let's just bear in mind that actually the royal to really be focused on is Andrew
Court Unseals Documents in Ghislaine Maxwell Lawsuit
"Unsealed documents show that Jeffrey Epstein was offering advice. Take Elaine Maxwell as latest 2015 despite her lawyer statement that the quarters socialite had no contact with the disgraced financier in a decade. Maxwell's in a federal jail in Brooklyn after her arrest this month on charges of engaging with Epstein in a sex trafficking scheme, she's trying to stop the disclosure of documents that include her sworn testimony in a civil case. Joining me is Bloomberg legal reporter Patricia Hatano, who's been covering the Maxwell case that give us the background on these documents there? This is a prolonged involved. Story goes back here. There was a young woman named Virginia Robert to Frank's, and she says that when she was 16 years old, she encounters going Maxwell at Mar a Lago. Her dad works there, the maintenance man, he gets a job at the law. She's handing out pals and ah lovely woman. British woman comes up to her She's reading a book about massage and offered her a job working for this wealthy man who wants to go looking for a private, Mr She said. She was 16 years old at the time. So she goes to the mansion. If it turns out, she's introduced Jeffrey Epstein and he immediately and Maxwell, she alleges. Forced her to perform sex acts with the two of them program and she became a sex slave she and alleges that was in 1999 2000. So then she ends up. Trying to join a law with victims of Epstein after everything gets his secret plea deal, and she makes him comments about Maxwell publicly and Maxwell coming back and issued a press release in January 2015. She makes pigments and says that this woman is a liar. Would provoke a pram a defamation lawsuit. Dupree, Suze Maxwell for Defamation and Natural gave testimony under oath questioned about the sex trafficking. Judy was very, very aggressive. Her lawyers included David Boy and this guy Bradley, Edward and Pottenger in Florida, and they really went to question Maxwell at people that worked at the stain home in Palm Beach. All kind of allegation. Soju phase allege with force have sex that you have traffic in Spain. This man including alleged princes, possibly Prince Andrew. She named him and Maxwell denies it. So what happens is the stuff was all settled right? On the eve of trial, 2015 losses got settled right before trial, And then the documents were under field. So how did all those sealed documents get unsealed before Jeffrey Epstein's suicide? But after F being gets prosecuted, the Miami Herald goes to ask why this field And the Court of Appeals. Second Circuit Court of Appeals directed that the judge who had originally had the law didn't properly feel you shouldn't have properly field everything. It was improper to keep all the documents from the public. And so that's how we get to this point. The circuit orders last on the order all these documents and fields and all the documents start hitting the docket. And the next day, Jeffrey Epstein is found dead in his jail cell of an apparent suicide. So the document release was sent back to a new federal judge to preside over what properly on field in what should not be properly and field And you can imagine there's all these implications for other people whose names may can't come off other victims who allegedly were there when the trafficking occurred or were also traffic who may not want to have their names come out there like a Jane Doe Juan and a Jane Doe two and no Mortal, Jane Doe and also John Doe. So Judge Preska on July 23rd shelter hearing after you know, Matthew now been charged and says, Okay, let's go and have a hearing about what you get on field, So she ordered the first transfer documents to be unsealed last Thursday night, So that's how we get to the testimony. Maxwell with questioned under oath. The government used the testimony as a basis say stay. She lied and committed two counts of perjury for lying when she claimed she was never present. When Ft may have been sexually abusing, underage girl know, and she'd seen anything like it, she was not aware of that activity, illegal activity no more. President ever witnessing it so that testimony remains under seal because she went for an emergency motion and after the court of Appeals to again stop the release. Thursday night, the 30th so that was on 11th hour stock about part But the rest of the documents hit the docket starting at like 9 30 on Thursday night. How many documents are already out 2000 pages released in August. So that's when we started first seeing these allegations of possible you know Prince Andrew's involvement, some captains of industry more implicated some senators from former president their allegations that were flight records of people who were on the plane. Two F Things Iowan in the Virgin

Lincoln Project Releases Video Criticizing Trump's Pandemic Remarks and Well-Wishes to Ghislaine Maxwell
"I want to take a look at another factor in the campaign, and this is Republicans working against the re election of Donald Trump, and this is the latest from the Lincoln Project, let's take a look at the Lincoln projects latest AD. COVID nineteen deaths till now more than one hundred forty, one thousand thousand new deaths reported overnight. It is what it is. Forty million people have lost their jobs in ten weeks is what it is massive camouflaged federal agents detaining peaceful protesters. It is what it is. The British social is accused of conspiring with. I wish her well whatever it is I just wish it well frankly. Jennifer Mary from Donald. Trump's both yesterday to the ad tonight. something obviously unimaginable before him? President United States saying I wish her well twice about a woman accused of sex trafficking, minor jewelry four Jeffrey, Epstein. Yeah and it's a case. The Messenger being effective for getting getting under trump's skin. Think that wondering the Lincoln projects does really well. Is that Republicans are former Republicans may know what irks Republicans and say you know. I, think coming back. Keep coming back to that comment about wishing her well is joined to. It's GonNa. It's GonNa. Upset Him, and that's what. That's what he does. Their ads are designed to do that. Designed to provoke and you know with the the video with the former vice president and President Obama. It's another case of the Messenger being just the right one in. We all talk about how trump doesn't take responsibility. Kirk says, but to have a former president I dates. Who Bore so much responsibility for advice for the United? States, speaking in a casual conversation like this. I think it really has an impact people. It's not a speech. It's not a set interview. It's a conversation and also as a practitioner I really admire how well the Biden campaign is played this out a clip today. We are all talking about it. I got a ton of. Of calls from reporters today. Who wanted to talk about the Biden Obama relationship? There was an event in build build. There's more that they'll will see tomorrow, but this is what the campaigns got to figure out. How do you do this and the time of a pandemic when you don't when the BP doesn't have the opportunity to do a lot of offense and I think we'll have to see stage, but in this case manage to make it informal in warm events like this. As the president was leaving the briefing room. Today we could all hear someone or more than one reporter yelling. That name Lane Maxwell to the president That was the question he didn't want to deal with today about. Why did he wish her well yesterday? That's right and what we saw yesterday was a president who was at least on message when he was reading. Out from notes, but then when he was his notes, he was against spreading misleading information so while he's reading he saying yes, the it's going to get worse before it's better the minutes later when he doesn't have a dose in front of what he's saying is actually it's going to disappear so what we see and president trump is someone who is easily thrown off in this case. When he's answering the question, he's being fully himself, so he answered that question really in the way that he really believed. He wanted to answer it and I. Think now, of course it's causing problems for him, and maybe now he's GonNa Adjust his answer. to to find some way that will make this may smooth over a bit, but we already know what president trump thinks because we have to go with the first answer, which is the answer that he gave when he was really thinking about it, in a way that was very much leaning on his instincts, which was of course to wish her well.
Trump Sends Well Wishes to Ghislaine Maxwell
"In our politics lead now. Even some trump republicans trump supporting Republicans expressed outrage yesterday when President trump extended well-wishes to Glenn Maxwell Maxwell has been charged with conspiring with the now dead pedophile. Girls by her longtime companion convicted sex offender. Jeffrey! Epstein she has pleaded not guilty. I haven't really been following it too much i. just wish your well. Frankly the warm wishes for Maxwell are bringing renewed scrutiny to trump's relationship with her and Epstein who government officials say died by suicide in his jail cell last year after being charged with sex trafficking, some Republican lawmakers reacted to trump's comments on twitter. Saying this is unacceptably obtuse for a woman accused of the most morally depraved of crimes, and she is despicable and he needs to. To say that I've met her numerous times over the years especially since I lived in Palm. Beach and I guess they lived in Palm Beach but I wish her well whatever it is. Trump says he's known Epstein. Since the late eighties and pictures from the ninety show the president with Maxwell who became Epstein girlfriend associate, and allegedly his madame, one picture shows trump with maxwell and nineteen ninety-seven, then again in early two thousand at trump's palm beach property mar-a-lago with his wife. Melania, and Epstein another picture shows trump with maxwell. At New York fashion show, and then again with model Naomi Campbell epsteins one time business partner Steven Hoffenberg who's been eighteen years in jail for a Ponzi scheme told CNN today. There's no dispute. They knew each other well adding he liked her, and she liked him and a two thousand two interview with New, York, magazine, trump showered praise on Epstein, calling him quote terrific guy and saying he's a lot of fun to be with. It is even said he likes beautiful women as much as I and many of them are on the younger side. After I've seen was arrested last year. Trump had a different tune claiming he kicked Epstein now. Go years before. He was a fixture in Palm Beach. I had a falling out with them a long time ago. I don't think I've spoken to him for fifteen years I wasn't a fan. Prosecutors say Maxwell went into hiding over the last year as more victims came forward, alleging she learned them in and groom them to be sexually abused by Epstein alleged victim. Virginia Jufri has claimed Maxwell recruited her in one, thousand, nine, hundred, ninety nine, while she was a locker room attendant at trump's mar-a-lago resort, though she never alleged any wrongdoing by the president. And Jake. The comments at the president made about Maxwell caught some White House officials off guard now. He is expected to brief again shortly, so we'll see if he addresses this then.

"I'm Tara Paul Mary, the new host of broken. We've been hard at work on our second season reporting alongside the amazing women who survived Jeffrey Epstein's abuse and are now demanding justice against his co-conspirators. We'll have that season for you on September sixteenth. But when major news broke this morning, we knew we had to jump on it. Today, we announced charges against Glenn Maxwell for Helping Jeffrey Epstein. Sexually exploited interviews multiple minor girls from the period of nineteen, Ninety four through nineteen, ninety seven. That's Audrey Strauss. The acting United States attorney for the southern. District of New, York Maxwell has been taken into custody early this morning in New Hampshire, and we'll be presented this afternoon before a magistrate judge in the district of new, Hampshire. Since Epstein's death. The thing I've heard over and over from his survivors is it's not over. There were many people who like Maxwell helped enabled epsteins. Abuse Maxwell has long denied any wrongdoing or even knowledge ABC's crimes and finally today the government made the first big announcement since obscene suicide last summer. Our reporter Emily saw rush to Lower Manhattan for the announcement and she joins us now. Hey, emily. Hey so you're still at the ESPN Y right now, right? Yeah I'm down by. I'm not specifically in the SDN Y, but I am down by the courthouse and it's It's surreal to be here during quarantine typically pretty bustling, but. Everyone's and masks, and Just weird to be back in the city. What was the briefing like? I've been in that room. A million times but never with so many people wearing masks, and so terrified and to be crammed into a little room together and also just people have been waiting so long for this moment, it I felt very surreal to be there and I mean even the acting US Attorney Audrey. Strauss was obviously excited to be giving briefing which You You you, don't you? Don't hear frequently. Her voice sounded particularly emotional when she talked about certain aspects of the indictment. including, How instrumental Glenn was to Epstein's grooming and recruitment process Maxwell was among epsteins closest associates. And helped him exploit girls. who were as young as fourteen years old? It's a big deal to step forward with a case like this it is, it's a huge. It's a huge deal for them to put together the production of I mean. We're in the middle of a pandemic. It's a it's such a big deal that they're willing to literally risk safety to get us in a room to talk about how huge this arrest is emily what? What happened today I mean? Can you just give me the rundown on Glenn's? Day Yes, feds busted down a door in Bradford. New Hampshire eight thirty a M little later than they typically do when they do these federal rains, typically, they like literally rip people out of bed around six AM. So she got a little more sleep, and then dragged to a courthouse somewhere in the district of New Hampshire where. She did not actually see a judge, but attended a video conference where she was presented on the charges. Given that she was affectively brought into custody it is. Incredibly unlikely that she. She knew that this arrest was coming today. If she knew that the federal government plan to arrest her, she likely would have either a fled or be orchestrated a surrender with her lawyer so that it would have been. LESS OF A. Less of a show. I mean I gotta say I was really surprised to hear that she was arrested in some small town in New Hampshire. She's got three passports UK France. We don't have an extradition treaty with France, so that may have been a safe place, and then you hear all these rumors. Oh, lanes in. Peres pictures floating around for an in now Burger in California and then to hear that she's been arrested in this sleepy town in New Hampshire I. Mean I was certainly shocked. I think it was a it was definitely a surprise for me to one of the things that we consistently hear about Glen. Is Hope Worldly? She is and about how much travel. Just how how much she travels and how sort of Polish and British she is and so she has no ties in the US. She has no family. Here the fact that she was just literally hiding a stone's throw from new. York for hours in a town that I I'd never heard of. Shocking to me. You wouldn't think that she'd be living on one hundred and fifty six acres, in New Hampshire which apparently she bought the place in December and cash, which I thought was kind of interesting. Yes, she was taking a lot of measures. She purchased the property and cash through an LLC. That was in no way related to her name. she kept changing accounts for her primary phone number which she'd registered to the name G. Max She was opening and closing bank accounts all over the place I mean. She was even ordering parcels to that property in someone else's name, so she appeared to be doing everything she could to avoid detection. Yeah, you know. I loved what Bill Sweeney the assistant. Director of the FBI field office said about what it was like to track down. We've been discreetly keeping tabs on Maxwell's whereabouts. As we work this investigation and more recently be learned, she'd slithered away to a gorgeous property in New Hampshire. Continuing to live a life of privilege, while her victims of at the trauma inflicted upon them years ago. We moved when we already and miss. Maxwell was arrested without incident. I was also surprised to read how much money she had because she filed that suit a few months ago, saying that Epstein promised to always cover her legal bills, and to provide for her financially, and then to see in the detention memo that she might have as much as twenty million dollars I was I was. Kinda surprised to hear that as well. No, absolutely when she found the lawsuit against epsteins estate, saying that he'd promised to always take care of her financially and now she was. You know battling a back. All of these lawsuits from from victims I mean it made it sound like she was destitute, and we really we know she had both a professional and personal relationship Epstein. We know she took care of her properties, but I. When her father died, he left his family in bankruptcy. He left the companies and bankruptcy his his her siblings have built themselves up somewhat, but other than handling epsteins, properties, and allegedly acting as. A recruiter of children for him should. She didn't to the best of the public's knowledge have another career. So where is this money from It's definitely very suspicious. Right and it was an all these different international bank accounts. She'd been traveling back and forth. They said she went to fifteen different countries in three years. She just sounded like an international woman of mystery kind of like Epstein. But I wanted to ask you. What exactly were the charges? So Glean was. Glenn was indicted on six counts. so there are some conspiracy charges. She's charged in count one in count three with conspiracy I to entice minors to travel to engage in illegal acts so and then count three conspiracy to transport miners with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity, so a conspiracy charge all that it takes for someone to engage in a conspiracy char- like to be charged with conspiracy is literally talk to someone committing an act so conspiracy. Conspiracy to entice miners could be something like hey. I saw a really pretty teen at the coffee shop. Like. Are you interested in her gotta whereas conspiracy to transport, miners.

We had a lot of money and you know he has means, and he was very determined, but without someone who. Can other woman ease Act as cover for him. Get used the British accent and the and the sort of the sort of hot. To make it seem legitimate, give it the Polish of the Gypsum Assi how how many fewer people would would have this happened with because. For me, that's that's the sort of. Worst part of what Elaine did. Making Epstein seem legitimate. And giving him this veneer of respectability. That's what she she lent to him, and that enabled him. I think to do this abuse on a far grander scale than he otherwise would have been able to and. That's to me the most pernicious part of gains contribution to this. Daniel beats is a freelance journalist living in New York. His work has appeared in the Guardian the daily beast, and the Times of London recently. He has been investigating the Jeffrey Epstein. There are no audio recordings of the hearing so we can't play you any tape from that day but we had Sean. Tae read her statement to US afterward you on and Jeffrey took me in. They sent me to school. They gave me a job. Flew me around. The world introduced me to a life. I'd only dreamt of and made me feel as though I'd become a part of their family. It took me a long time to come forward too long. Maybe in all that it has taken to bring this man to justice has been robbed his death every day every week. I've spent in the hospital since I've suffered. And he has won every job offer. That's been offered to me and then retracted. Because of my connection to this case I have suffered and he has won every relationship. I've ended because of the views I endured. I have suffered and he has won every woman sitting in this courtroom today. And all the women who have come forward. And whose lives have been affected by Jeffrey Epstein Sick Abuse of young girls. We have all suffered and he is still winning death. I refused to let this man win and death. I couldn't fight back when Jeffrey Epstein sexually abused me. Because I hadn't yet found my voice. He's cost his death has brought me of that justice. Please don't rob us of that justice again. Unbeknownst to Shanti before she arrived in New York her younger sister Teela Davies had also decided to come. I never been so proud of my sister. And all my life I literally could not believe my eyes when she stood up. I didn't even know she was going to speak any farmer who spoke at Epstein's bail hearing would again address the court when any farmer came to the podium. She used her time speaking in court to talk not about herself but about her older sister. Maria who was not healthy enough to attend. I had the opportunity to speak Jeffrey. Epstein's bail hearing. I am so sorry that others will not have the opportunity to stand before him but I'm here today to speak on behalf of my sister Maria farmer who could not be here. She risked her safety in nineteen ninety-six so many years ago to report them to no avail and it is heartbreaking to her and to me that all this destruction has been wrought since that time. And I think this is really an important signal to send to a message to victims out there. That people will take you seriously that. Even those empower will be held accountable. And then there was Courtney Wild Jeffrey Epstein Rob Myself and all the other victims of our Dan Court to confront him one by one and for that he is a coward. I WANNA think the. Us Attorneys for seeking justices that has been long overdue and most importantly given us the victims our day in court to speak our peace in fine some sort of closure. I feel very angry and sad. That justice has never been served in this case. Thank you an emotional. Hearing ended with the inevitable decision by Judge Berman to officially closed the criminal case against Jeffrey Epstein. That was the final. Hearing in the case of the United States versus Jeffrey Epstein as the prosecutors have made clear it was not the end of their investigation Epstein had been charged with two crimes sex trafficking but also conspiracy to commit sex trafficking and that is what investigators are now examining whether there is a case to be made against any potential co conspirators. As we speak federal prosecutors here are still looking at whether to charge any alleged accomplices. I think the best ending to the situation would be one day I am. I A neighbour yells at me and says Maria. Turn on the television. You're not going to believe it. They've rounded up all the perpetrators and as of now and our sources have indicated to us that Glenn Maxwell is the principal but certainly not the only focus of that investigation until recently the most public allegations against Len. Maxwell came from Virginia Jofre. It's not how Jeffrey died. But it's how he lived and we need to get to the bottom of everybody. Who's involved with that starting with? Gillan Maxwell and going along the lines there As you heard on this podcast in recent months there have been a number of allegations against Glenn. Maxwell that have surfaced in civil lawsuits. There is any farmer who says that at age sixteen was flown from her home in Arizona to Epstein's ranch in New Mexico where she says she was sexually assaulted by Maxwell there's Teela Davies who says that beginning at age seventeen. She was flown around the country and around the world and sexually assaulted by Epstein at his various homes and she says that Epstein usually had his entourage with him which included Maxwell and then there's a very recent lawsuit that was by Jane Doe Against Epsteins Estate and Maxwell. She says that she was recruited as a thirteen year old by Epstein and Maxwell way back in nineteen ninety four She claims it. Epstein repeatedly sexually assaulted her and says that maxwell regularly facilitated the abuse and was on some occasions even present. What had happened in the case of Michael for example? I would really like to see that. She is But she is charged. Ivan Cheese put on trial. But it's likely that any investigation will take time. They WanNa make sure in this situation where there is a great deal of skepticism among the victims about the federal government's role in this that when they do if they do bring charges against anybody else that they don't swing and miss they wanNA take their time and they. WanNa make sure that if they do indict anyone else that it's a rock solid case Glenn. Maxwell has previously denied Virginia Ju- phrase allegations Indep positions calling her a quote absolute liar but its Maxwell faces increased scrutiny and her whereabouts. Remain a mystery. She has responded to any of the lawsuits filed against her. Since Epstein's arrest we've also attempted to contact her for common but those attempts have been unsuccessful. There are two other people. We've told you a lot about in this podcast. Who have been in the headlines as the scrutiny of their association with Jeffrey Epstein has intensified. One is Les Wexner. The eighty two year old founder of L. Brands who announced this month that he's stepping down as CEO of the company. After fifty seven years at the helm the announcement also came as L. Brand says it sold its majority. Share of Victoria's secret to a private equity firm and then there is Prince Andrew who prosecutors in New York said just weeks ago. They've tried to speak with but has been uncooperative. Despite the fact that he previously said he'd be willing to sit down with them and today Buckingham Palace has declined to comment as epsteins victims. The end of the criminal case against Epstein doesn't mean the end.

"However lenient however controversial however baffling epsteins deal with the Federal. Government may be the decision to make. The deal was entirely within the rights of Alex Kosta and the US Attorney's office but what made the deal seemed so much worse and what a court ultimately ruled violated. The law was that the government did it in the shadows and don't have any memory of ever being informed that the that the charges had been settled that way and then he would be You know so lightly reprimanded for this ongoing widespread scheme. It's important to me for. Just there's you always when something happens to you it's just always told somebody whether it's yourself or whoever accountable for that same he's GonNa pay. The price said that never happened. And this is what has fueled Brad and Courtney's fight against the federal government for the past decade. Their argument that the deal is invalid. Since it was done in violation of Courtney's and the other victims rights namely to confer with prosecutors and to be made aware of important developments in the case and in the center of the Fight. Was Courtney Wild. Secret walked away at the very beginning after that first hearing after. She got the non-prosecution agreement she could've walked away and many steps since then she chose the fight and she's made it very clear. I'm not I'm not finished. I'm not stopping this fight until it's over and there is nothing else that I can possibly fight. I'm right there with her. I agree courtney says her remorse. For recruiting other girls at Epstein's insistence has fueled her fight and strengthened her resolve. I would never want this to for one happened again to anybody else. In the fact that this just because he's He has connections and he has a lot of money. He's paid his way out of this and the US government has allowed it. Why why is this happening? Why did you let this happen? Her biggest motivation has always been I brought others into this who were also victimized and their lives were negatively impacted and some ruined and I was drawn in and played a role in that and for them to see this through and she's in it for the long haul. I mean there's there's there's no quitting her so unfortunately for the US Attorney's office they got the wrong person on the other side if they think that she's going to back down there long-haul fight would take a dramatic turn in twenty nineteen when in February a federal judge gave Brad. And Courtney the decision they'd been waiting for ruled in February that the non prosecution agreement that was signed in September of two thousand seven was signed before any victims. Wherever told anything so that violated the right the victims had to meaningfully confer with the prosecutor in the case before it was resolved. All right we got this ruling. We know that now. What's the what's the remedy for it? The obvious remedy is. It's an illegal deal so it's invalid void you resend. It wasn't illegal immunity agreement. What we don't know is if we ask for that remedy which we have always asked for that remedy if we get it. What DOES THE GOVERNMENT DO? And what seemed like an even further sign of hope when Epstein was arrested with the arrest of the mega wealthy financier? Jeffrey Epstein he is doing Federal Court here in New York today. I knew sex trafficking charges after a raid on his Manhattan Mansion. Saturday would be dashed a little more than a month later. Epstein was found dead in his cell early this morning Jeffrey. I've seen has been nothing but manipulate our justices. Some where he has never been held accountable for his actions. "As Brad Edwards. And Courtney wild were left trying to figure out what exactly happened between the Federal Government and Jeffrey Epstein Epstein would be off to serve the only sentence he'd face eighteen months behind bars but he'd end up only serving thirteen and just like his secret deal. Epsteins jail sentence would be unusual to it was very unusual the charges he pled to were minor charges. He got some kind of a deal but we didn't know what kind of a deal. What was the deal? We didn't know anything you'll remember journalists. Michelle dark from first episode. She's the former reporter for the Palm Beach Daily News who covered epsteins case as it was unfolding after the hearing and after he pleaded guilty we found out he went to serve his time in the Palm Beach County Stockade. Which is like nobody serves their time in the Palm Beach County SPEC aid. There's hardly anybody in there. And it was very unusual that you would serve prison time for a state sentence in the Palm Beach County stockade. The stockade might conjure mental pictures of seventeenth century punishment. A prisoner with his hands and head in the stocks but in Palm Beach County. The stockade was in fact an entirely separate facility from the main jail one where Epstein was kept away from the general population and even left with his cell door unlocked all the journalists were like. Why is he in the stockade? We later learned that he was in his own wing of the palm. Beach County stockade. It was a vacant wing of the Palm Beach County. So he had his own wing. The stockade is kind of a lower security thing. It's just a smaller. A kind of prison is just very small. Though Epstein would even be granted work release. That sometimes allowed him to go home and by the end of his sentence he was able to leave the stockade for up to sixteen hours a day. Seven days a week Sex offender person who's molesting a minor like. I said before you read in the paper every day. They go to prison for twenty thirty years. Epstein's plea in State Court to two felony charges did result in him having to register as a sex offender but it spared him the possibility of time in federal prison even state prison making his brief time behind bars even easier. I've never heard of anybody doing their sentence in the stock. Of course if you get sentenced on state charges usually you go to state prison. And that wasn't done either. Even now. More than a decade later the question of why Epstein was housed in the stockade and given work release or the subject of an ongoing investigation ordered by the governor of Florida in two thousand nineteen as Epstein served his lenient sentence Brad. Words was getting to work to try and figure out how this all happened. And his first order of business was to find out. Exactly what this mysterious deal between the Federal Government and Jeffrey Epstein was just because Brad knew there was a deal didn't mean he was allowed to see it. They fought us on it. We had to get a court order before the victims. Were even able to see the non-prosecution agreement that was virtually immunity agreement that was signed September. Twenty four two thousand seven between Jeffrey Epstein and and the Government Edwards has to appeal to the court for permission to see the the document and eventually he's given a copy at first. He's told he can't share it with anyone other than his clients so he can't go public and say look at what just happened. Look at this. He has to keep it to himself until no later in the process through other cases in the state courts eventually the full non-prosecution agreement is made pub. And when the full deal was finally made public victims of Jeffrey Epstein say it was like another punch to the gut felt like I had just been portrayed. I can't make any sense of how you know. There's a solution without the victim being involved and they excluded the victim from the solution entirely building. Now about how the situation was handled it just it. It's really sickening to me on the one hand. It's just. It's hard to believe that they that this could be done and that that they could get away with it. It makes me so mad because it's not right. If did something like this. I'd be in jail the rest of my life because I'm a Joe Schmo and we go to jail and we go to prison and and we have to go through the the justice system and the and the law matters. Why does it not matter for him? The secret deal between Jeffrey Epstein and the Federal Government was spelled out in seven pages. That were finally unsealed in court records in September. Two thousand nine two years after the document was signed and more than a year since Brad had filed his petition to try and stop it and at that point we did find out there was a deal struck wear if Jeffrey Epstein pleaded guilty to these two state charges and he served his time which he was given eighteen months which as I said he served in the Palm Beach County stockade that he would not be charged federally. Any federal crimes would go away no federal charges in exchange for a guilty plea in state court the Federal Government had agreed to end its investigation of Jeffrey Epstein. And walk away. But the devil was in the details. It turned out it wasn't just Epstein who received immunity also in a non-prosecution agreement it gave immunity to his co conspirators. You might look at a typical federal investigation of conspiracy and you might see offers of immunity to people lower down on the chain with the object of getting testimony. That helps you put away. The top in this case in appears to have been inverted where Epstein was granted. The deal and he was able to protect those blow him in the allegedly below him. In the in the conspiracy they non-prosecution agreement named four names. But it also said any and all others who may have helped him. They're all granted immunity. According to the deal we have this very strange provisions in the non-prosecution agreement that immunizes not only Jeffrey Epstein and certain named co-conspirators but also all co conspirators whether they're known or unknown. There's no good explanation for giving immunity to not only Jeffrey Epstein. But let me just handed out to the named conspirators and then throw it in there and all other co-conspirators. There's people who got immunity from the deal that haven't even been identified. Initially we didn't know that provision for immunity for co-conspirators unnamed and otherwise Were part was a part of the deal. We didn't know that I didn't know that 'til sometime later. Brad says explaining the deal to courtney was difficult but just like after that first court hearing he says Courtney wasn't deterred before I left her place day. She said we're not stopping. We're never going to stop until I know exactly what happened. And why after finally getting to see what the deal was? Brad and Courtney's fight would then shift to trying to have it torn up and it's through their effort over years of court battles that thousands of pieces of evidence would be turned over showing how epsteins immunity deal came to be and then it became a lot more clear as the case progressed. That Courtney was taking on to parties that have almost been aligned lockstep for ten years. Which was the government and Jeffrey scene at the same time? So it has been courtney fighting the guy who abused her and the people who were supposed to protect her didn't through all the evidence that has been released over the past decade. It's now possible to get a good look at how Epstein secret plea deal came together and to see just how jaw-dropping it was now what we're looking at. Our visa called privileged logs which are basically indication of documents or items of evidence that the government has in its possession in thousands of pages of court filings reviewed over five years by ABC News senior producer. James Hill we can see how expansive the Federal Investigation of Jeffrey Epstein was. They looked at his bank records. His companies they were all over the place Looking into epsteins life you have here. Subpoenas documents to hyperion to Jag. Those are the companies that ran epsteins airplanes and as he and I sat down to look through some of these records. It's clear that in two thousand six the FBI investigation was in full swing working to identify more victims. Big Away the original investigation which was really just looking into the question of whether Epstein had Effectively created this network of young girls and women who He recruited to his home and paid them in in in exchange for LURID or sexualize massages. They can begin to look.

"Society else but between nineteen eighty one in the late one thousand nine hundred eighty s as Epstein is running his own consulting firm whether he was having any success or not is unclear author Bill Cohen and says that if Epstein had found some new strategy for investing or making money for his clients wouldn't have remained a secret for long. If Jeffrey Free Epstein were doing anything miraculous a would have been Unwound would have been discovered if there was some secret sauce that he was using spreading around. We're all known about it. Epstein had always been secretive about his clients and and while he claimed that billionaires were calling him for advice he appears to switch gears. After a few years I was the CEO of towers always finding Corporation this is Steven Hoffenberg. Who Hired Jeffrey Epstein in one thousand nine hundred eighty seven? I am a former principal. Associate Partner of Jeffrey Epstein's and I've spent years with him. I understand him greater. Probably Google's the most others based on my history with him and we started in the seventies. We grew into sadly to to report a criminal enterprise before Jeffrey Epstein arrives on the scene towers financial. Is this company run by Steven Hoffenberg. It's a repo. Oh Company. They're basically bill collectors. If there's a big debt owed to a hospital or an insurance provider they'll go out they'll oh by that debt and then try and collect it from the people who who is in New York City in the nineteen eighties at the towers. Financial headquarters of four seventeen fifth. Avenue is when I made sure they describe him as the route flew ren look rugged manly shop rather swagger. It's very sophisticated. Jeffrey Epstein had come to know an associate of Hoffenberg who Hoffenberg says recommended him. Good friend of mine said to me. We have an executive onboard. And American from New York named Jeffrey Epstein. Hoffenberg says at the Time Epstein was struggling financially. The meeting of Jeffrey Epstein was unusual number one Jeffrey Epstein was broke. Couldn't pay his bills and came to us. Humbly looking for employment and asking for opportunity there were clouds but tell us financial was having its own problems with the Securities Exchange Commission Hoffenberg though says he was impressed by Epstein. He says he saw talent in him. And we saw in Jeffrey Epstein mm-hmm this magnificent personality in this tremendous Wall Street. salesmanship he's charming. He's charismatic very funny. He's lovable totally lovable. And very unusually smart. Nobody was dealing with all the time and had the ability we see Wall Street turns up and down and the way to make money on Wall Street so hop in Burg Brings Epstein on board as a consultant reportedly setting him up in an office and as court records later show he paid Epstein a consulting fee of twenty five thousand dollars a month. There were a team of people on Wall Street involved until his financial team but Epstein in Iran it Epstein goes from operating out of his one bedroom bachelor apartment to then and now one of the most sought after addresses in Manhattan. You know a large office overlooking a famous restaurant in a courtyard in midtown Manhattan on Madison Avenue that is ABC News Contributor Contributor Rodney Boyd. A financial investigative reporter and the founder of the Southern Investigative Reporting Foundation. Life had to be looking pretty good for him at at that point Hoffenberg says during this time he and Epstein got to know each other quite well. We worked together seven days a week. We traveled the world together. And we got to know each other's thinking methods ways and lifestyle you know Vanity anti-fair said that you were abstains. Real Mentor that true. Yes as one of their first acts together at Towers Hoffenberg alleges in an affidavit that he and Epstein took over to insurance companies so 1987 Hoffenberg and Epstein acquired these two failing Illinois insurance companies companies United Fire and associated life. and the thinking there goes. We're not trying to get into the insurance business. So why would they want to acquire insurance companies if if they had no intention of running them well. Insurance companies are legally required to have a lot of cash on hand just in case they have to pay claims they used. WHO's these two insurance companies as their cash pile and let's be clear here? This is totally illegal. They envision themselves Eckstein and Hoffenberg as corporate raiders who are good to go in choir the companies and then they start thinking about ways of using that cash pile to go out and read and acquire new companies and Hoffenberg says they set their sights on acquiring an iconic airline..

"Back at her home as we're sitting in her art studio she told Arlene reporter James Hill that it's taken her a long time to finally be able to talk about what happened to her and so I stopped painting from that time period of the early two thousands thousands until a year ago and really I didn't I was just kind of going through the motions of life so not painting for twenty years was was very caused me to have depression and it was very painful trying not to cry so yeah it was just very painful to not be able to paint and to not do the one thing that I was here to do and I feel like I have a lot of catching up to do because you know it's been so long so I have a great deal of work that I need to accomplish and I feel a lot of pressure because somebody says is why. Why did you stop? I actually stopped because I felt like my art had been violated. Rea- shows us some photographs from before she went to Ohio. What else okay? So here I have. This is when I went to Eric. ficials workshop in New Mexico and we all went to Taus to his ranch on that trip and this is me sitting in the studio talking to Erik and sunglasses yeah. It was Santa Fe very nineties. He's James Hill Asks Maria if she ever found out what happened to the painting that she sold Epstein back in Nineteen ninety-five. Where's the original? I don't know I don't know if say as far as I know. Jeffrey had it is in the estate looking back all these years later. Maria says she thinks she knows what Drew Epstein to her painting of the girl on the couch with the man in the doorway and what drew him to her in the first place so is playing with these ideas of a voyeur. ISM and that's disturbing to me. I think that's obviously what compelled him he saw in this vulnerable woman and a man in his boxers blocking doorway getting ready to take advantage of that woman. That's what I think he saw. And that's not what it was about. Only recently as Maria started painting again. Dan Dedicating her work to other women like her survivors of Jeffrey Epstein. And today when she talks about them she cannot hold back her emotions. When I look at those other girls they were into and I can see it all broken? I spotted in and it kills me me but the thing. She can't get over. The thing that still haunts is that what could have been the first alarm about Epstein. Instead became the first first of many times. He appears to slip through the cracks as she puts it. I tried to warn you if the authorities had heeded my report and done something complain about it. None of these women would have been learned next time on Truth and Lies Jeffrey Epstein Jeffrey Epstein had a way of dodging trouble. And some say he may have been doing it for most of his adult life. If you look at Epstein's life it feels a little bit like a rags to riches story but there's still a lot missing from it. There's a lot of mystery for some reason. I was told that he was like a brain surgeon. He said well you know I made all my money Inventing a non invasive liposuction machine next week we look at Epstein's this climb from a middle class Brooklyn boy into the world's top one percent and those who say there were victims left in the wake. Nobody really knew to who he was but yet he had all of these rich and powerful friends a financial Predator and he was also a sexual Predator he was connected he let people know how connected he was and how powerful. He was Eichel.

"This podcast includes graphic descriptions of sexual assault. It may not be suitable for all listeners. Pepsi's first of all I know you're freaking Dolphin. Relax okay the man with the thick New York accent. That's detective Joe Rick Carey. I want to thank you for coming. And he's a veteran investigator with the Palm Beach Police Department and he's talking to a young woman who sits on a couch across from him. He's tall and broad with slicked back hair while she small and almost swallowed by the cushions. I understand you may have information nation on a case that we're looking into okay. That's the reason why I brought you here today. That children say right now just talking to a young woman in nineteen years old and we'll call her Erica. That's not her real name. I am telling you everything I know. Very Person Erica. Is there because has detective or Carey is investigating several reports of sexual assault. It started when a fourteen year old girl got into a fight at school it might have otherwise gone unnoticed. I accept that the girl was found with three hundred dollars on her. The girl was cagey about where the money came from but eventually she said she'd gone to a rich old guy's nice house in Palm Beach and giving him a massage and she says Erica brought her there. She hearing anything she needed money. I basically told her about it. She she was like You know what are you have to do. I told her I was like the more you do. The more you make that. She walked out of the three hundred dollars so she obviously free and evidently loved judo more which was good to massage. She is and she basically wanted to touch down there. Typically and Erica says that for every girl she brought the old man she also made two hundred dollars train. How many girls have you brought? Oh a lot. Walsh was underage. told me Sir detective for carry the other. Investigators didn't know it yet but this case would consume their lives for years to come. There's as well as the dozens sense of victims left in the wake. The case involving the rich old guy in Palm Beach would come to include allegations of abuse across multiple continents and several all states. There could not have possibly been a more wealthy a more powerful or a more dangerous sexual predator. There is no yeah no other case like this. This is the longest standing human trafficking case. This all happened the way it did. Because of money money power power and influence no doubt about it he certainly got off on the fear of it all and the intimidation of it all and the power and the I think that's part of what's so hard like I feel like he took my power. The rich old guy in the mansion in Palm Beach Dad was Jeffrey Epstein out of the growing firestorm surrounding multi billionaire Jeffrey Epstein. Tonight arrested and charged Manhattan. Sure Jeffrey Epstein. They found hundreds as the indictment says he created a vast network of recruiters to find him a constant supply of minor girls willing to engage. My name is Mark Remillard and I'm a reporter with ABC News. And I've been working with a team of journalists with an ABC's investigative unit to Peel back back the curtain on how Jeffrey Epstein largely eluded justice for decades we look at how Epstein built a financial empire one that provided him with access access to young girls and the power to shield himself from punishment is paid his way out of this and the US government has allowed it. Jeffrey Epstein Gene is a guy who's become extraordinary wealthy without any clear path to that wealth and we look at how his alleged criminal conspiracy spiracy grew over the years with the help of others. These predators are grooming children. They groomed my sister. They groomed me. It was a whole network working.

"This podcast includes graphic descriptions of sexual assault it may not be suitable for all listeners. The one thing that I wanted to do color CH- just trying to figure out what color when he uses a base. Sorry this is Maria farmer. She's standing in front of a large wooden easel in her living room. Slash Art Studio. The room room is open and airy flooded with light from Florida's ceiling windows that overlook a beautiful lake out front so we're in my studio two new new studio for Manse very well lit which is such a treat and so I'm taking advantage of that For a couple of reasons one thing for the series I really want it to be five rent. Maria is working with a new set of soft pastels thumbing through a wooden box for the perfect base color to use in a portrait. That she's drawing Roy. I want to draw people's attention to it and I also feel like there's a lot of strength and power in this. You know being very colorful once on the path to a promising art career. Only in recent years has maria been able to stand before an easel again primary green again the portrait. She's working on is part of a series on the wall next to her are seven others that make up what. She's calling the survivors this project. Seven portraits all different women. Each one of them with piercing eyes set on top of bright vibrant hues. There's Turquoise there's pink purple yellow there's a blue green and orange and so that's each each color behind the girl represents her each one of the women survivors of Jeffrey Epstein on the leftist Sarah. And then you have Virginia and then Michelle. I want these girls to be honored. I individually Julie I wanted to portray. How beautiful these women are and how strong they are but there is one portrait? That's missing marinas. I'm GONNA be blank. Thanks you paper in mine. She says she too is a survivor of Jeffrey Epstein. But there's a reason why she'll simply be a blank canvas I I am just a blank sheet of paper according to the government and the FBI. And I have felt like a blank sheet of paper for twenty four years. That's how I feel. I feel invisible. That's because well before authorities and Florida would investigate Jeffrey Epstein and his system designed to bring him underage girls. Maria farmer says she tried to sound the alarm if the FBI had listened to me in nineteen ninety-six when I called them and gave them all the details about the perpetrators and their crimes up to that point if they had listened at all and cared none of the women would have been harmed if the the FBI done their job a decade before more than a dozen young girls and women in Palm Beach would share their stories race of abuse at Epstein's Mansion Maria farmer would speak up I she says she told the NYPD and the FBI about Jeffrey Epstein who she says wedged himself into her life into her career even into her family. Maria told me that he was a very generous person who liked to help academically gifted students and he also was very interested in furthering her art art career. He definitely was manipulating us. And she alleges that Epstein along with his one time girlfriend Glenn Maxwell with take advantage of her she he sold it to me. I mean like Hook Line and sinker. I thought this woman really cared. And even when she spoke up says nothing happened. I gave them everything they needed. All the bad actors the FBI has known about this. And that's why when I look at those other girls they were into and I can see they were all broken from ABC News. I'm Mark Remillard. And this is truth in Lies Jeffrey.

"This is broken Jeffrey Epstein I'm are led this week reporter Julie K Brown it was one of those kinds of careers where you know you start at the bottom bottom the Miami Herald and about how she was able to break one of twenty eighteen biggest stories I'm a runner and run a lot and one of my go-to run songs is a song by ACDC called it's a long way to the top if you WanNa rock and roll and really it's been a long haul hi Adam pay Ari so Adam this week you talk with Julie AK Brown who's one of our executive producers on this show what made you WanNa do that well Julie of course is the Miami Herald reporter who's incredible series about Jeffrey Epstein almost exactly a year ago is the reason his name was thrust into the public conversation the reason and we're pretty sure he was rearrested and then ultimately killed himself the reason we're having this big national conversation including this podcast about hat how a man could just so blatantly and flagrantly commit such vile sexual crimes against children for so long and and it all goes back to Julie and all goes back to what I've learned about Julie that Julie Brown has an amazing story in and of itself she really did not grow up with the a lot of opportunity thrust at her with a lot with an easy pathway and she worked hard her whole life doggedly often in obscure at corners of journalism but just focused wouldn't take no for an answer and it made me realize that understanding Julie Story is part of this because because of who she is that she was the one who brought this story forward when so many others who received the benefits of our establishment look the other way made accommodations to Epstein's wealth she's sort of the opposite of everyone else we know in journalism in New York who's gone to an Ivy League school and just had this direct path into the establishment really so tell me about that the only thing I know about Julie's childhood from her twitter bio is that she's crazy about Philadelphia yeah well she has definitely crazy about Philadelphia even though she lives in Miami and I live in New York I feel like we talk about Philadelphia almost every time we talk although she didn't grow up in Philadelphia she grew up in an outer suburb called Sellers Ville and that's what I asked her about when we sat down together great you take it from here thanks to Julie grew up in the nineteen sixties and seventies in a middle class town with her sister and brother and their mom and her family was seen as something of a black sheep back then it was frowned upon for a woman to be single with three children ESPEC- early in the Middle Class neighborhood where we grew up so we were pretty much ostracized by a lot of people in the neighborhood she remembers being bullied at the bus stop when she was little the scariest time was mischief night the night before Halloween that's when the neighborhood kids would all come out and it would dirt bomber house and break the windows and I remember sitting in the living room every mischief night just holding hands with my mother and my brother and my sister just thinking I wonder what we're going to do this year Julie says her childhood was rough enough that she has blocked a lot out and doesn't remember many of the details I found so striking that Julie's childhood seemed so similar to many of Epstein's victims she was this young girl who didn't have parents able to protect her and guide her I could relate to some of these women in the Epstein story because they didn't necessarily come from situation where their parents were abusive but they came from situations where their parents were working so hard that they were never around and you sometimes go down the wrong path when that happens her single mom was just scraping by the Power Company wants came to her childhood home and took their furniture when they couldn't pay the electric bill she had no dad around and Julie mom didn't or couldn't make time for the kids don't know she knew how to really be a mother Kris she was working you know in her defense she was working she had in supporting three children on her own and she worked two jobs and she was just working I was beating myself up thinking when I was in a good daughter in that must be why my mom wasn't there for me you know she was just never really there for me so I started and met some people who were older who just became my friends and my to some degree my parents because I didn't really have parents you know and feel like they were ever therefore me coming home from school no one to talk to you know I just felt very alone in my life so at sixteen Julie moved out legally I signed papers become a mandate it began living with some friends who were older than I and just tried to I make my way she moved in with some older girlfriends who are already out of school so she's sixteen going to high school during the day and working working constantly they started at James Way if you've ever it's like the old version of Kmart I worked at a James Way starting I think when I was in high school and then I worked at our shop delivering flowers and then I worked at the lampshade factory than I worked in a paper packaging company Then I b eighteen of a clerk in a belt company Schommer Caroline's Oh literal bells yeah real bells this will as you'll see a theme Angelique life constantly working multiple jobs never giving up these days after years of therapy and becoming a mom herself Julie says she no longer resents her mother and is able to see that she did get this unstoppable grit from her my mom's mantra all the time which my sister and he's kind of roll our eyes at but it's really true she would always say Julie only the strong survive she would say that all the time so that's reality that kind of cut embedded in my head from the time I was little and it sort of made me keep thinking okay take another breath you're GonNa get through this all these trucks five at sixteen working one of her jobs taking care of little kids at a daycare Julie met an older woman Candice Cross who changed her life she's funny because I used to go to the daycare center in my high heels and I was sort of like I don't know I didn't really fit in this is a daycare worker wearing you know daycare close I was always wearing short skirts and heels and things like that so they used to make fun of me and I don't we just hit it off and she was much older than me she's younger than my mother but a motherly kind of figures for me and they always made me feel like I could he's something more with my life candace was an artist she and her husband John Lived on a farm I just felt like I'd never met anybody like the these people before they were sort of ex hippies and we would I would end up over at the farm just solving all the world's problems over a couple of glasses of wine as Julie told the story of candace and John Croft I found myself thinking of Jeffrey Epstein Angeline Maxwell who were masters at playing the part of a caring older couple who only wanted to help young women achieve their dreams Julie Sixteen on our own was as vulnerable as any of Epstein victims but she was lucky the older couple she met were good they were kind and genuine supportive and they opened the world for her they looked at the world in a different way than I had ever known before so it was just something in my ahead that I kept thinking wow there's a whole nother way that I could live my life you don't besides just waiting tables and trying to figure out how I pay my next bill I could do art I could do writing I could just more of an intellectual way of living my life Julie worked for four years after high school but with candace John's encouragement she decided to apply to Temple University temple gave her a full ride but Julie wasn't sure what to study I knew I love journalism I was the high school paper but I saw you know I'm not going to be able to make a living as journalists but my very first Journalism Class that very first semester I took a class with a professor who was a full time reporter at the POTTSTOWN Mercury newspaper her and he offered me an internship the following semester and I worked pottstown mercury in and was going out to all kinds of cool stories and I did so well at it that they offered me a fulltime job at the mercury but it had taken me for years to get to school and I wasn't GonNa leave at that point and so thankful okay I stayed there and then the next summer to public relations internship in Philadelphia and I hated it and then I did a an hardship the following year at NPR in Washington sort of talked my way into it I called them up one day and offered to do an internship there and anyway all those intern ships kind of led me to what I really wanted to do which was right for newspapers Julie graduated and actually got a job in journalism she was hired as a reporter we're at the Bethlehem Globe Times small regional paper but it did not feel like the start of a promising and lucrative career in the field Julie's new job almost named set up for her to fail my first or second day on that job all of a sudden we saw these police officers outs aside and the editor who hired me came over to me and said I gotTa tell you something we just laid off half the staff they had hired me to replace the this woman who had been doing the job forever and I'm covering the Bethlen Police Department and the cops didn't WanNa talk to me for the longest time because they were uh-huh angry that my predecessor had gotten fired and not only I mean fired in a very ugly way really and so it took me a long time didn't make inroads with the police department that's when Julie tapped into her superpower superpower her mom had given her she was going to be the stronger the person who survived and she was going to work as hard as she had to to get ahead I just kept plugging away and I don't know sometimes when people tell we know or they're not gonNA corporate with me it makes me try even harder to win their trust you know and that was part of what I did I think at that job Julie built a career moving from tiny small town paper to small town paper she covered the police and local government she even wrote obituaries for Weil which by the way was a great beat I think I learned a lot about writing doing opitz actually cause somebody just random person you have to figure out how to make yeah words or whatever interest yeah I'd love doing obituaries because we did them like really creative lay back then not like how they're done now you really called and interviewed people who knew the person die so you know I learned a lot during that Julie also got married had two kids she was building in "Now the reason this is a Ponzi scheme as I understand it is because as you would take the proceeds from subsequent bond issues to pay the investors for the previous ones which is the definition of a Ponzi scheme right that is correct once you use new money to pay all money that's classified as a Ponzi scheme again at the time. The biggest Ponzi Z. Scheme in history money is coming in like crazy hundreds of millions of dollars in fact Hoffenberg says Epstein becomes obsessed zest with using that money to really make a big mark. He decides he's GonNa Buy Pan. AM which at the time was probably the most prestigious historic doc airline in the world and the bond scheme wasn't enough for this team so towers adds to this ongoing ongoing Ponzi scheme massive insurance fraud they buy two insurance companies in Illinois Associated Life Insurance and United Fire Insurance and unlike any insurance company though they have lots of money in the bank because they took in premiums from people are holding onto the money so they can pay it out when someone's house burns down or someone with a life insurance policy dis now regulators always keep a close eye on insurance companies because it would obviously it'd be very bad if they don't have money left when the customers need it and can't rebuild their house or get on with their life after a loved one dies so in a routine audit the State of Illinois notices this is that there are weird things happening at these two companies they then asked a lawyer Barry Gross to take over the companies to dissolve them and have have the state take responsibility for any claims as gross does his job. He quickly discovers. This isn't just a poorly run set of companies companies. This is a major fraud in this case. They were reflectively transferring money for example. The money that was transferred to Epstein was characterized as consulting services. You know no one could demonstrate what consulting services ever provided aided. Epstein was someone who no one in the insurance industry recognizes someone who had expertise you know where you would go to for consulting services and that type of an expense is just totally uncommon it so we were concerned about that being money just for me be transferred from the company. Grows is not a cop. He's not a criminal prosecutor. He's a lawyer and a CPA who has uncovered what looks like blatant crime so he calls the people who prosecute crime. You know we did contact the Chicago. US Attorney's office US During Office for the Northern District of Illinois and let them know of our concerns they started the investigation here but it clearly the companies were being managed out of New York and so they L. Typically transported to the New York opposite the district attorney of the US Attorney's office now in Chicago epsteins name kept coming up up it came up in Barry Gross investigation and then according to some great reporting in the Washington Post epsteins name also came up in grand jury testimony money in Chicago in one thousand nine hundred three which identified him as the mastermind of the whole scheme but he's like a zealot of crime. If there's a crime he's there it it is incredible to you couldn't make up this character. He was involved in some of the shadiest aspects of our financial system. The Wild as Wall Street in the early eighties when deregulation is creating just this free for all the shady world of arms dealers and money laundering in the mid eighties this this massive Ponzi scheme even later we'll get to this in a later episode becomes the head of a major subprime lending operation ration- that was part of the toxic assets that brought down the global economy. He's like a villain in eight different movies. If you made up this character you'd have to tone it down. You'd you'd have to tone it down exactly but in this case Epstein slips away he kinda disappears from the whole towers operation before things start getting really bad and then there's this early investigation in Chicago they transfer the whole investigation to New York to the southern district of New York because because Towers is based here and somehow in that process epsteins named disappears prosecutors here. Don't bring him up ever again. What happens to Hoffenberg Hoffenberg is sentenced to twenty years in prison. He serves most of it. Mitch Braider and another confederate also convicted but Epstein isn't as far as we can tell even looked at and I should say we're still looking into this show reporting but as far as we can tell right now this was not a case of Epstein being protected by powerful figures or treat in a special way like he would be years later with his case in Florida. Just get lucky he was lucky and maybe a little savvy he was never on the payroll of towers he was a consultant and all the co conspirators who were actually on the payroll were loud and easy targets so prosecutors focused on them but even though Epstein was never convicted of this crime. If you remember what Paul Pelletier told us that doesn't matter because the money he got from the scam and we know for sure he got money was tainted by the crime all of that money was identified as tainted money for ever and if that money was used to fund his future businesses than that money is tainted to now that would be true if Epstein wasn't a participant in the fraud if he was an innocent dupe who just somehow got paid by this Ponzi scheme probably the best example that we have of that is in the meat off Ponzi scheme so that's Paul pelletier again that former prosecutor and the Bernie madoff example sample is very telling as with any Ponzi scheme made off was using future investments to pay off earlier investors. One of those lucky investors was a hedge fund manager named in Stanley Chase who got around one billion dollars from MEDOFF. He died and left his money to his widow. The government was pursuing those funds even though the wife had nothing to do with the crime was in salt possession of the money but the money was directly linked to make Ponzi scheme so so even if he was innocent if authorities can show that some significant portion of his wealth originated in the towers fraud the government can seize sees it but we obviously don't think that he was innocent of wrongdoing and remember when Jeffrey Epstein met Steven Hoffenberg in nineteen eighty seven. He was broke when he stops working with him around nineteen. ninety-one Epstein is wildly rich. He was becoming the man who had so so much money. He was able to live this life of complete disregard for the law. Now the other thing that happened that's important in that same time period as he also met. Les Wexner the owner of Victoria's secret and probably as listeners to this show. No everybody's trying to figure out what his relationship with wexner was and how much money he got out of that relationship so right now we don't know how much of Epstein's money came from the tower scam and how much came from other sources purses now. Hoffenberg told me Epstein made hundreds of millions of dollars from towers but it's hard to take Hoffenberg as word I mean he is a convicted fraudster her who is seeking to rebuild his reputation and it must be a great temptation to say hey everyone you know the most hated man in the world he actually did all the crimes that I plead guilty to but we do have clear documentary evidence that Epstein received hundreds of thousands of dollars from the scam written out to his name in records and obviously when you're running a massive multi million dollar scam you don't normally write checks to yourself in your name so we can assume that he made many millions of dollars from the scam but to this day we don't know how much now the reason it's important to know how much is because for prosecutors to seize all of his wealth to avoid the Virgin Islands mass. They need to show sort of a chain of custody. They need to show that the money he has today the money he left in his trust originated in this crime. Now there's another avenue also which is to show that the subsequent money was also part of crimes because has in theory. It's possible that the second he left towers. He never again did anything illicit. I called Diana and Rica's. She's a legendary financial reporter order. She was at the New York Times for a long time and she actually covered the towers. Financial fraud and later became one of the only reporters who Bernie madoff with talk to when he was in jail. Oh there's this great. Hbo Film Starring Robert Deniro About Their relationship she has known a ton of Conman Ponzi schemers and she's made it a big project check to understand how they think and I asked.

"On our first episode owed we spoke with Roberta Kaplan a lawyer for one of Epstein's victims and right after that show. She filed a lawsuit against Epstein State but she told us. It's not going to be easy to get that money. Two days before Epstein died he rewrote his will to put his money in the US Virgin Islands so that makes things very very very complicated for my client in the many many other women in her position on the Virgin Islands is a obvious small jurisdiction listen. I'm quite sure they've never really handled anything like this before. We wanted to understand this better so our producer. Adam Davidson has been calling around the Virgin Urgen islands. what it looks like. They're probably looks different than Brooklyn. Oh well I'm actually in Dallas. Right now. I I last September so I can avoid the hurricanes and tropical storms but normally it's it's beautiful. It's green and lush. It's pretty mountainous and then you have the blue blue water. It's a beautiful place to live. That's that's Robert eberhardt. WHO's a lawyer on the most populous of the fifty or so Virgin Islands Saint Thomas and he's not just a lawyer on Saint Thomas. I he's one of five. They're only five lawyers on the island who specialized in wills and probate according to the local Bar Association and the people people processing those probate cases Carolyn pursell is one of them and then Henry car the other magistrate so Oh really and truly those are the two different people that would be assigned the case where there's only two people who handle all the probate cases. Yes Oh so in those two magistrates also handle all of the islands traffic cases. All of their small claims they are ridiculously busy. Abra Heart always tells clients don't go through the Virgin Island courts for wills and probate. It takes forever. I have one case where my client is. An air air to an estate. That's not particularly complicated and it's been going on for. I think eight years now and it's just just now. They're getting to the stage where they're going to have a final adjudication wow so eight or nine years and it could be many years more before any monies and he's actually distributed. Yes and that's a not a especially complicated case so how does not compare to Jeffrey the case the US Virgin Islands are a territory of the US sort of like a state with its own legislature and local courts. Although oh Robert says it's also a lot like a small town there are a hundred thousand people in all of the islands around half of them on Saint Thomas and he's pretty sure he he knows nearly all of the lawyers there which wouldn't be hard. There are fewer than three hundred ever heard says the culture of laws pretty laid back people on an island as he calls it often avoid the courts when someone dies you'll have a case where the grandparents and then the parents passed away and the grandchildren have been living on the property for you know thirty years and they haven't gotten around a pro-beijing it yet and so then you have incredibly complicated she way so that it might be multiple generations and then some like second second cousins start saying wait no. I own this land no no I on this land and up and they have to go back like multiple generations to figure out wow because nobody wants to bother even with a regular taste right and that that happens quite frequently but that makes things do get get to court even more complicated by the time something is before a magistrate it might involve a complex stew of family history with decades old poorly remembered verbal agreements ever heard says it's hard to imagine the Epstein case coming into this system. It would be a huge complex case in New York. A city filled filled with thousands of lawyers used a billion dollar disputes during a half billion dollar mess of complex finances and hundreds of competing interests into into a system that can barely handle simple will is unimaginable. Eberhardt isn't even sure where all the incoming lawyers would stay. There's not a lot lot of folktales rooms right. Now is the hurricane twenty seventeen like the Ritz still isn't open again. You know the Marriott partially open there are also also some basic fairness questions. Jeffrey Epstein was deeply embedded in the business and power structures of the US Virgin Islands. Everybody knew about Epstein East pretty notorious like I never saw him around and I was surprised at how many businesses involved yeah so for instance is office. Manager of one of his businesses was cecile the young who was the wife of the former governor to governors ago John Dion so the guy owns two islands. He owns several big businesses. This is on the Big Island. He's employed a lot of the most powerful people on all these islands. Obviously he knows when he makes a will oh putting all his money in the Virgin Islands. He's GonNa make it almost impossible for his victims ever to get at that money. I mean it's going to go on forever. A I could see it being a twenty year probate matter insisting the complexities so some people think that a special master will be appointed which could make the whole thing go more quickly but Eberhardt after he reconsidered thought twenty years was not even the right estimate I an optimistic number. Epstein placed his money in a trust which means we don't know who he named as his heirs but over the past few years he's given money any to the people who most helped him in his sexual crimes and he was obsessed with keeping money away from his victims so it seems reasonable to think that that is trust will reward co conspirators and encourage them to keep silent and a well written trust could provide them money right away long before for the will and probate are finalized so the longer the case drags out the better it is for Epstein side and the worse it is for the victims but there there is another possibility a much quicker solution. I would argue the government would be entitled to every dime. That's Paul Peletier. He was a federal prosecutor in Miami Emmy for decades and he spent a lot of time taking money away from criminals he eventually became head of fraud for the Department of Justice and he's also our legal analyst he he says there's a way for ABC's victims to avoid the Virgin Islands avoid the whole process of wills and probate. If Epstein got his money illegally they might not be technically his money. It might be the US government's money so then his will is irrelevant. The money isn't his in the United States. uh-huh tainted money is any money that is the proceeds of crime so you have a fraud case and you steal money from people any money that you steal from people is taking money from the government's perspective. This statue of limitations never applies to tainted money wants to government has obtained a judgment against that money if Epstein got his money as part of a crime and the key here is the crime that was prosecuted successfully by the government. His money can be seized. Even if that crime occurred decades ago Paul has dealt with this before he went after a drug trafficker named Julio Cesar Nassar David who is one one.

"He said something like he's never give in never run away. I believe in what I'm doing and I don't care what you think me. There's a there's a hubris defiance there and the sort of the indestructible indestructible and the the controlling element and I think especially with regards to women Tombola who read a really good biography of Robert Maxwell he had this jaw-dropping anecdote about gain West supposedly she was representing had died at a dinner in New York for their Nazi Hunter Simon Wiesenthal and the next day she brings up a father who was in Moscow and sort of gives him a report of the proceedings but he was furious at her and she sort of somehow has a letter that she wrote to Her dad in in the book and reads. I'm very sorry that my description of the dinner was inadequate and made you angry. I should have expressed that I was midi presenting you with preliminary reports and the full written report. Whoa to follow she then gave him this long ring written report with a long description of every guest had been praising father. I mean I just always here's how I mean. It says how impressed she was by dad. You know at the same time it's just she she might have been his favor. He may have doted you should own her but at the same time at its core he was very much in control and she was very much kind of doing his bidding and and you see that all David with Epstein. It's almost like gallon. Maxwell's childhood was designed to prime her for her role. In epsteins world. She's used to serving a fraudulent controlling EGOMANIAC. She got the perfect background for it that might explain it but so what unlike almost every other woman epsteins orbit bit killeen came into it as an adult she wasn't coerced. She did the coercing just as much as Epstein. If you're a teenage girl and some old a guy pulls up next to you on the street and his car even if that car is a Mercedes you know to keep on walking but if it's another woman and she sounds all fancy let's see and well educated. You're probably going to get in the car. I don't feel you know compassionate. Sorry for gain without d'alene. How many people would abstain any of abused obviously in he has a lot of money we had a lot of money and in a has means and he was very determined but without someone you know who can other woman ease act to cover for him get used the British accent and the and the sort of the sort of hi standing to make it seem legitimate. Give it the Polish of the MRI. How how many fewer people would would have this happened with because to me? That's that's the sort of worst part of what Elaine did making Epstein seem legitimate and giving him this veneer of respectability taxability that's what she she lent to him and that enabled him to do this abuse on a far grander scale than he otherwise would have been able to and that's to me the most pernicious. Paul of Gallons contribution to this Daniel beats is a freelance journalist living in New York you work his work has appeared in the Guardian the daily beast and the Times of London recently he has been investigating the Jeffrey Epstein Scandal in depth for the Daily Mail in a moment what's next for Elaine. There's definitely an investigation into deal maxwell.

"So epsteins dead. There's no sending him to jail but his victims can still go after his money in a civil suit. You can't sue dead person. You have to sue their state. That's Roberta Kaplan. A lawyer who has argued cases in front of the Supreme Court including the one that brought down the defense of Marriage Act and now she represents one of Epstein's victims her client who did not want to be named was referred to as minor victim number one one in epsteins criminal indictment as the indictment says he asked and she told him her age at the time so which is why she was such a crucial person for the indictment Dighton because had she given that testimony would have definitively proved that he was engaging in very serious federal crimes now that he's dead Kaplan in the victims victims are looking at a civil suit to go after Epstein's assets but he made that really hard it's unclear exactly how much money he had or where he put it but more than five hundred million dollars is locked up in the US Virgin Islands so that makes things very very complicated for my client and the many many other women in her position when someone dies their assets go through something called probate a judge rules a will is valid which starts the whole process of distributing attributing all the money and property this is also the time when someone can sue in a state and argue that they should get some of it under normal circumstances like when a not very rich person dies and leaves their money to their children uncontested probate takes. Maybe a year but none of this is normal. The Virgin Islands is a small jurisdiction I'm quite sure they've never really handled anything like this before. It's not like the New York where they're used to dealing with huge multi hundred and million dollars Assets Epstein killed himself exactly four days before a new law would take effect that allows victims of childhood sexual abuse to sue their abusers years years after the crime occurred that doesn't seem like an accident and what's more he signed a new will forty eight hours before his suicide so two the days before he died in the federal prison he assigned a new will the executives on that will or the two attorneys who help him problem for years structured his assets and as he brought to people supposedly made him judgment proof if he knows he's going to be dead. Ed and he does this and two days later. He'll be dead. I mean what does that say just trying to mess with these victims from beyond the grave. What does he care. What's happening adding to his assets. If he's going to be dead there's quite a bit out there that talks about him bragging to people over the years how he had made himself judgment proof and how all these women who eat abuse could not get at his huge wealth because he had entered into all these complicated mechanisms trust etc ought to to keep his assets safe from these women on given the fact that he bragged about that. I think I have to assume that that was his goal. Well before he died in that was his goal and changing the will why anyone's kind of psyche would do. I'm not a shrink I can't. I can't give you an opinion about that but my guess is. That's what he was thinking. A civil case against an estate in probate in the Virgin Islands would probably drag on for a very long time like years and there's no guarantee that the victims would end up getting what they want so Kaplan's trying to arrange a group settlement. Obviously these women were were terribly damaged. My client was terribly damaged. Our judicial system has ways of putting a dollar figure on that and it should and she should get compensated up and stated for the injury. She suffered well. It might not it's not like a broken arm feel like you again in a in a car wreck or something like that what what she suffers actually far worse in far more damaging to her so she should get compensation for that on top of that. I think for her to finally get a a dollar figure from the man or the estate of the man who so abused her for so long will feel to her vindication. It is not the same thing as vindication education in a criminal trial obviously and the only reason think about it the only reason she was willing how gutsy of it was for her to be willing to show up an open open federal courtroom in testify She's not going to get that but I do believe that she will feel some sense of of vindication in I hope peace that she truly will get that fresh start that she's hoping for Attorney Roberta Kaplan so how do we look at Jeffrey Epstein and what what he got away with. What does this story say about who we are as a culture at this moment. Epstein Cross paths with everyone from Bill Oh Clinton to Donald Trump and they all seem to have something in common they were rich and powerful men crossed the political and professional spectrum and they have an abiding biding tastes for much younger women and they're willing to abuse their power to get them perversely and not unruly women. WanNa look young forever. That's why there's a multibillion dollar industry boxing foreheads and coloring grey hairs so he's the Epstein case extraordinary or is it representative Jeff how come you didn't have to hide it better. Maybe because it was so easy not to have to hide we'll follow epsteins trail and examine the elite circuit that runs between Park Avenue in Palm Beach Jefferson. Yeah likes to hang around with beautiful women who were also younger like I could say that about a lot of men I know like I'm not a lot rich met. He's just he's literally. Almost a half a step away from many people that are in the line of the law stepped over it. We'll hear from epsteins friends and those who witnessed his rise to power firsthand I would really amash the marine on Wall Street Greece and a criminal Mesh to my we'll hear from epsteins accusers. They'll tell us their own stories. It's not how Jeffrey died but it's how he lives and we need to get to the bottom of everybody who's involved with that starting with. Gillan Maxwell and I won't stop fighting. I will never be silenced until these people are brought to justice a- We'll talk with researchers about what drives this kind of abuse. There is probably at other Jeffrey Epstein Right now happening in this country and our systems are failing victims it is happening right under our noses and when people do come forward they are not relieved and we'll hear from people who have worked inside the federal legal system to find out what comes comes next. This investigation was backwards on every level from the get-go the only conclusion that I draw from all oh that kind of behavior is the diversities off the rails. "Our Program will tell this this story with the help of our executive producer special correspondent to we K. Brown the reason there was a packed courthouse last week. The reason we've heard so much about Epstein eighteen is Julie. She's an investigative reporter for the Miami Herald who has been digging into Epstein for three years and she wrote an explosive series about him last fall all she was in New York for the hearing last week. I think one of the things that really struck everybody right away. was there was probably about thirty women that were obviously victims you know sitting with their lawyers and they all had certain look yeah. What about well it? Ah tends to be very waif-like women who had blond hair most of them had blond hair blue eyes not all of them but most of them they have a stature about them like a model quality stature about them uh-huh and then the next thing is sort of notice is how they all were looking at each other and an all kind of you know recognizing you could see it in their faces like. Oh man look you know here. We're all in this. This together and Squirrel could feel as the hearing went on this bonding there was really going on. They were putting their arms around each other's very emotional. you know to see them. All bonding like this and I think you know the after the first couple title of women's spoke. I think I could feel that the other women who came up and they were more confident so I I got the feeling that they were all supporting each other even though some of them didn't know each other before that hearing this doesn't happen victims do not get to testify about a man who's dead judge. Richard Berman said he knew of only one other example in our system when someone dies and criminal case against them is over but these women wanted their day in court and Berman and the prosecutors felt they should have it. They were very adamant about the fact that they were not going to handle this case the way that the prosecutors in Florida had handled it and you know as we now know the prosecutors in Florida deliberately. He kept the victims out of the process. They didn't tell them what they were doing. They hid things from them and from the get go and the prosecutor in New York and the judge weren't going to have that happen in this time round. Berman is a federal judge but he also the happens to be a licensed social worker so I think on an abundance of you know understanding that this that that it's very important fortin victims are part of the criminal justice process they wanted to give them this opportunity have their say and and by the way it's also part of the law. I mean we have a federal law called the Crime Victims Rights Act which is exactly would you know was violated in the Florida case a AH. Ha outlines certain steps they the prosecutors are supposed to take by law to involve victims in the criminal justice process especially when there's any kind of plea agreement. Jeffrey Epstein's criminal case is over. That's it whatever was said in the courtroom last week is the last word on his is criminal culpability but Epstein didn't operate alone. This was a real well oiled operation. It wasn't like some you know Mickey Mouse kind of thing you're talking about schedulers so that he has these women coming and going to three four times a day at each of his homes so if he's flying for example from from his home in New York to Palm Beach. He has people that are calling up his schedule. Learn Palm Beach in the schedulers are calling up women and trying to get them all lined ended up. He's GonNa be here a week or two weeks. I mean they're the they had a system and every single home that he went to and every place he went to he had people luke pulling the strings and doing his his you know schedule we know the names of most of the people in that operation but in some cases it's hard hard to tell who was a victim and who was a perpetrator when girls outgrew. Epstein sexual tastes by which I mean that they turned seventeen or eighteen years old they would sometimes become part of this scheme in a different capacity procuring other younger girls. There was one person though who was clearly no victim Kathleen Maxwell according to a lot of witness testimony in court filings was Epstein partner in every sense of the word and yet she was granted community in the Florida case. I mean you would think that they would for one thing charged Deland Maxwell. who was you know really really She really ran the show I mean from what the court records show. Of course she denies it but there's an awful lot of evidence an awful lot of evidence that she was really and we know in her case that she comes into this relationship with him as a grownup yeah and it was maxwell swell who apparently started the whole thing. I mean she was at the top of meaning. If you think of it sort of as maybe an organized crime the family you know you have Epstein Amax up the top and then you would have Kellen Leslie Groff and you know Nadia Marson Arson Cova Adrian Ross may be there the lieutenants so to speak you know if there was a you know there was an organization running. Louis those other names have been raised in court filings as potential co conspirators of Epstein's Sarah Kellen Leslie Groff and Adriana Ross. They were epsteins assistance and allegedly. They were responsible for arranging his encounters with his victims. They say they didn't know how young girls actually were. Nadia Morrison Cove Israel is murkier multiple women who've spoken about their abuse name her as one of Epstein's collaborators but an an incident report from the Palm Beach Police says that Epstein called her his sex slave and brought her to the United States from Yugoslavia after he purchased her from her own parents. Her legal team says that like other Victims Marcin Cova is severely traumatized and needs time to process and make sense of what she has been through before she is able to speak out a so what now I am trying trying to purposely steer my own path in this story because it is a huge story still going after the crop. Shen because how did he do this. He did not do this alone and he didn't get that jail term and he didn't get you know all all the privileges. He got without somehow getting someone to agree to it. I'm still focused on whether there were any prosecutors who did who committed wrongdoing whether on the state level or the federal level whether anyone in the sheriff's office committed any wrongdoing on whether there were any other other people I mean it could for all we know there could be an FBI agent somewhere who who was not on the up and up in this case I mean one of the premises of of our show is that the obscene case is indicative of a lot of other problems and realities in our society where we have a justice system waited wildly towards the powerful and we have a culture culture that values wealth and men and youth and beauty and women particularly in Palm Beach and Park the places where Epstein operated so it's like in some ways the Epstein story represents the worst of our values sort of distilled into poison and I wondered that ring true to you or does this feel the Epstein case just feel like a horrible aberration marijn from your perspective well. I think it was is probably one of the worst cases you know of of you know someone on who really a was able to use his connections in wealth and power in plain sight you know there was a photograph autograph that was uncovered recently of Virginia one of the Victims Virginia Robert Giuffra when she was quite young seventeen she looks even younger than seventeen eighteen in the photo and she's got a party. I can't remember if it was London and it was a party for Naomi Kindle Campbell the the model and she's in those photographs and she's surrounded by all these people many of them famous and she looks like this little girl role in the middle in the sea of this crowd of like partier and she just stands out you know and you have to wonder wise a little girl I mean she did. She looked like a little girl at this crazy party with all these you know wiser child at this his party right. Why wouldn't who wouldn't ask that. Yeah absolutely we'll be hearing a lot more from our special correspondent. Julie Brown in the coming weeks after the break. We'll kind of justice is still available for epsteins victims that five hundred million dollars should go to these women.

"Fear and obvious discomfort before I knew what was happening. He grabbed onto my wrist and tug me towards the bed. I tried to pull away but he was on buttoning shorts and pulling my body onto his already naked body faster than I could think Jeffrey Epstein Reynolds sex trafficking operation involving hundreds of girls pretty openly in Palm Beach New York Paris and on his own private island authorities of known about him since at least two thousand five but never in all those years have any of his victims had the opportunity to stand up in a court of law and publicly say what happened to them until last last week. I was searching for words but all I could say was a meek. No please stop but that just seemed to start him more. He continued to rape me when he was finished hopped off and went to the shower. I pulled my shorts up and I ran as fast as I could back to my own villa my feet bloody from the rocks. Shaun Tait Davies was was one of sixteen women who spoke in a courtroom in Lower Manhattan last week. None of that testimony was recorded but when the hearing was over many of Epstein's victims came outside and stood in front of the building to talk to reporters. You know the scene it's the courthouse steps you see on every episode of law and order when someone is standing there surrounded by cameras and microphones. Some of the women cried some stood silently one was holding her baby others like Teela Davis defiant. I'm going to say today as they have have power. It was unnerving. How similar all the women's stories were there were young when it happened fourteen fifteen and naive and they needed money you epsteins people offered them that a couple hundred bucks to give a massage which inevitably ended in sexual assault some of them saw him only once and others were trapped in a perverse relationship with Epstein for years what was almost as upsetting for the victims as the sex was watching Epstein evade justice the women felt ignored by the legal system only this year after FCA arrest in New Jersey. Did they begin to think they might be able to confront him and force him to hear their stories. Do I feel his death. As an appropriate punishment absolutely not gets nobody justice and it makes me sick to my stomach that there's perpetrators out out there that obviously helped him in many ways for a very long time and they're still out there with no punishment..
