I've got tyson osceola and that's just because of who he's been with the steelers ever since he's been with the steelers he's not been that flashy guy and he's the kind of guy that you don't you don't miss them till he's not there in the steelers almost completely mr miss year but luckily they turn that around but he'll still such a crazy but he's someone people he's not a guy that people talk about and yes he's one of the oldest guys on the team but he's still out there getting the job done and if he's still out there stuffing the middle at nose tackle and also possibly filling in some when they're in sub packages Staying on the field. With until while stefan to it's on the i r. He's going to be an important guy and and will be very much appreciated when the regular season gets here. "What do terrell evidence cameron sutton roberts bylane and advertisements all have in common besides them all being members of the pittsburgh steelers defense. All three of those players were used to cover receivers in the slot in two thousand twenty today. We're going to talk about slot. Defense specifically the players and strategies the steelers commonly used to defend them. And then we'll take a look at the players at the steelers are likely to use in two thousand twenty one to defend one of the most valuable roles in the nfl offense. I'm your host jeffrey benedict. Welcome to the cutting room floor. This past friday the steelers played their last preseason game and the only thing that remains of the twenty twenty one off season is a few practices and then the final cut down to the fifty three man roster. Almost all of the starting positions are have been taken. Almost every roster battle has been resolved with one major exception. And that is the nickelback before we get into to foreign nickelback. Bring i'm talking about what a nickel is some. Some people may find this interesting. Other people are going to be like. Why are you talking about this. But i just want to really quickly cover the history of the nickelback because i think it makes a lot of sense and it really helps inform what the steelers want in this position and the people that they choose to play if you look at a nickel package even steelers who run a traditional who traditionally run a three four defense with three defensive lineman and four linebackers when they do a seven man defensive front when they switched to the nickle package and six man defensive front. They put four men on the defensive line with two linebackers. That's because the modern nickel defense is based off of the four three defense. It is not a three four style of defense. You may hear. Some people will talk about the three three defense. Where instead of going to form and defensive line in two linebackers you keep the three-man defensive line and do three linebackers behind them which people have constantly and continuously touted as something. The steelers could play for their nickle package because it is a three man front much like you know the steelers reform package but the steelers go to a four two when they go to nickel and that's the basis of the nickel if you go back in time to the steel curtain when the steelers ran a four three defense and you take their linebackers back when they had. Let's say andy russell. Jack lambert and jack ham. If jack was on was assigned to cover a running back or tight end and that player that he was assigned to cover moved. Off the line of scrimmage and out towards the wide receiver right. If he moved out there jackass just move out and cover him. And if you take if you can take that in your head and get the idea of it and you see how you know andy russell jack lambert would have kinda slid over to cover the fact that only two linebackers were in the box. Now you have a modern day nickel packet. Basically what happened is teams. That could not could not put a linebacker outside of the box and put them in coverage like the steelers could with jack ham. Or even in the andy russell and jack lambert they could do with any of their linebackers. Back then teams. That couldn't do that. Would have would have a mismatch if i can take a player and send him out there and your linebacker has to cover him out there..

Heck the seconds to that cut deadline as those move start trickling in and we know they will and they will be coming in hot. And i don't really anticipate any big crazy cuts by the pittsburgh steelers especially the team in the direction. They're trending in. It just doesn't look like a team. That's going to be making any kind of bold decision right now but we should talk about the defense of course first half of the show. We broke down often. The side of the football defensively kicking things off at the corner position and we'll work our way in from there at corner. I think we already know what the steelers star is going to look like but then it comes to those depth spots and whether or not they make a move for another corner. Which if you ask me if you ask jeffrey benedict if you ask. Jeff hartmann dave pskov. Basically if you ask anyone from behind the steel curtain dot com staff it feels like an evid ability that the steelers land some sort of corner whether or not. It's a player from an outside team or trade to upgrade the spot especially at that nickel position. An o'brien callaghan's name. That's been talked about a lot and one that the steelers have called to check in on. I don't know if it's passed anything other than initial contact but that's something. Because the steelers don't really have any safeties past their starters you know making fitzpatrick trill admins and traynor. Would i suppose it's kind of that number. One free safety back up now with almost no competition behind him which is pretty insane for the pittsburgh steelers to roll a seventh round pick as a primary backup into the season. But that's just the way we're rolling into this year so hopefully norwood is ready to go but right now. I don't anticipate anything anything crazy. Come down from that role. Strong safety however i guess miles kellogg abreu is your backup strong safety guy. That played linebacker. The last couple of seasons. In that kind of marcus allen type role of course. He's reunited with coach. Darrell austin who drafted him to detroit and meet him. A strong safety before awesome left and killebrew was bumped down to that inside linebacker position. So safety i wouldn't expect anything crazy outside of them perhaps trying to bring in another body. I don't. I don't foresee them making any bold moves at the safety position though and are just more likely to try to rotate one of the corners. Up to safety in the event of an injury bringing things down to inside linebacker and things start to get a little bit of spicy because that inside outside linebacker spot. We know the steelers like to carry nine of them total. Whether or not it's five guys in the inside or five guys in the outside varies by year and it just varies by talent level. And who. Danny danny smith thinks is going to be a better contributor on special teams those kind of depth linebacker roles typically false guys that have a little bit more special teams prowess. So that's something to keep in mind when the cuts come down and you get mad that your favorites outside or inside linebacker depth player that is got the axe. That's probably because they're not a very good special teams contributor. And that's their number. One job being the ninth linebacker on this team so some names to watch out for us cut candidates i think of course ulysses gilbert the third his time i feel like he's one of those guys just come to an end he was terrible. I'm i'm going to my me to answer. I want get i go ahead. My answer is i think they're going to keep him at left guard. Because trade turner is a natural right guard and what he's played his career. And i think dotson is fine either way but i don't know that that set in stone i think all let's just say this i didn't have this as one of my five because i had other things that are more important but this would be one of those training camp questions that we would get that. It'll work itself out in training. Camp is dot dot dots moving to the right with with turner or something else that the left or are they gonna put turner and where where to. Castro wasn't keep dotson where they wanted to. Because honestly i could see dotson and szucs working well together a battery while again. Who could play guard but not as good as guard is what kendrick green offered so the question is do you get your two best lineman out there and even the one of them even though greed might have been the better center he was just by far the better guard in order to get them into positions.
