P. company he's also the author of a phenomenal book that will be released on June second called the end of jobs the rise of the agile company in the on demand worker when I think of you I think this is probably the best starting point I think of the quote that is attributed to either Winston Churchill or Abraham Lincoln which says success is going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm is that you well certainly the failure failure part has been but yeah look I have every time I talk with entrepreneurs and anybody has failed it's this notion you gotta pick yourself up dust yourself off and keep going and so I don't pretend that you know the sale of work market eighty P. wears some amazing you know journey and I was able to do it all on my own and able to do without the experiences that led me there the experiences that led me there were a lot of failure before we get into the failure in the backstory I want to tell our listeners that this isn't in this is a unique format of what we're doing today when I read just a book and I looked at Jeff's bio it seemed that twenty seven minutes in a radio format is not going to do it justice in particular in light of the fact that Jeff's book is going to be released soon I remember when I was an author I was on seventy seven WABC with a on a radio show called mind your business which was at the release of my book and I wanted to be able to give that back to Jack's so for everyone listening live for the next twenty seven minutes we are going to do part one for the listeners who want to stay on go to my you tube channel you go to Chuck Garcia dot com you will hear and see the entire episode because we're gonna devote part to solely to the book what is it why did Jeff right and who did he write it for just let's get into your background then before we get into the entrepreneurship tell us where professionally where it began I'm actually began a JP Morgan you know I had the pleasure of being a little investment banker in the mergers and acquisitions group that is to say working a hundred a hundred to a hundred two hundred ten hours per week seven days a week I didn't take a vacation for four years and you just kind of worked nonstop and it was an amazing grounding and work ethic in perseverance and a general introduction to business that I am unbelievably grateful for at the time that you went into investment banking were you looking to the future to become the serial entrepreneur no you know look to be honest I became an investment banker because that's what people were doing out of undergrad and so people with becoming management consultants or investment bankers I actually didn't really understand fully what I was getting into I knew it was a difficult job I knew it was a coveted job so I thought okay I guess that's where I'm supposed to go right and that's what people do but you continued on and it took you to Boston you went to Harvard Business School how come you know I was super fortunate with my career JP Morgan a lot of very senior people that were looking after me and they look after me because I was a guy that got things done they knew Jeff Wald would go through a wall and no matter what he's going to get this project done and because of that they looked after my career and I was promoted from an analyst to associate the associate role should actually what you get when you come out of business school and the general idea was the people we promote analysts to associate won't go to business school they'll continue want and I thought wow okay this is amazing but there is one place I've always wanted to go and I applied only to the one business school which as I was on my way back to my apartment on the day the mail came I thought this was a huge mistake more than one school and yeah I remember opening up that envelope and just shaking and I got in and I just fell to my knees crying because it's it's such an amazing institution for so many reasons and I just felt so blessed to have the opportunity to go there yet afterwards your path change didn't go back to some banking I know you went into a venture capitalist but this is as I read your background this is where I believe your transformation occurred for an idea about what you wanted your career to go walk us through what happened so my boss at the time he called me into his office to admonishment and he said look Jeff every time we're in meetings with entrepreneurs you are fawning over them telling them how amazing they are how they're changing the world and you have to stop this you know we have to negotiate with these people you can't just tell them that they were the best thing I from heart they're changing America this is what makes the capitalist system great they're taking risks he goes okay if you like it so much go and do it why are you doing what you're doing and I thought why am I doing what I'm doing I should start a company and so it wasn't you know for another year and a half that I eventually started my first business but that is what started me on a journey of thinking about that it you were changing your mind set were you adding on to where you thought you were on this claim of yours you know I wish I could attribute it to a thought out plan that I was going to go all right I'll do this step the next step in this step and and the truth is okay it wasn't you know this was a Hey I think this is the right opportunity for me now right it was a series of decision points along that line to determine my path not a predetermined course so as I sat there and thought all right I'm gonna start a business you know I still was working at the firm and his meeting with entrepreneurs and I met one that he and I just became fast friends and we started talking about his business and now over the course of the year at the end I going back and forth I thought this is it this is the one and we were so enthusiastic about it we funded it ourselves for him that was you know kind of a walk in the park for me it was basically everything I had and that business failed and that was certainly not a predetermined part of my journey to be basically bankrupt at thirty two and I suspect at Harvard Business School they didn't teach you how to go bankrupt they talked to quite the opposite they do teach you quite the opposite it is you know I wrote I wrote an article once called they didn't teach me to punch the toilets at Harvard because being an entrepreneur means doing everything yourself and they teach you a huge number of things and it's an amazing place but it's the network that you get there that I think is the most powerful indeed but here you were at thirty two tough time you thought my god I've got the world ahead of me what was the basis of that failure the base to the failure was the two co founders there were me and two other people the two of them were not getting along and mistake that I still don't quite frankly ruminate on you think at this point with the unbelievable fortune I've had that I would let this go I haven't but the two of them kept fighting and I kept trying to bridge their gaps you can try this and then we can all do this together let's all were a little family we can get through this together and that was a mistake I should have right when they became irreconcilable instead of trying to fix them if I had cut one of them out right then and there they would have done it whereas six months later when I finally started one of you has to go with it both took their heels and neither one of them wanted to go and neither one of them wanted to give this thing to the other end therefore the company had to get shut down there is quite a lesson in itself was was the idea sound yet the foundation of the people around the idea is that what caused the conflict the idea was incredibly sound and I have data to prove that in as much as three years later we restarted the same idea and we had a successful exit and so if we had not lost those three years it would have been a much bigger outcome the idea was found it was simply interpersonal conflict between these two people both brilliance super driven by chest unable to compromise and see each other's point of view what did you learn about yourself as you were working through this well I will tell you one of the things that I remain and get very upset with myself about is my in security to have stepped into the role and just said all right I'm in charge now the two of you are abandoning your responsibilities and I was afraid check out I was just afraid I was afraid to do that the reason I wanted to keep everyone together is that then they were three of us doing this together I could have been any points that are you both out I'm going to do it and I I just I wasn't ready to do that really internally I wasn't ready to do it yes that didn't lessen your spirit or desire to continue to ignite entrepreneurial issue you went on Hey I've learned at all now I'm gonna go succeed yes on the mountain what happened you know I will tell you the most difficult mountain to climb is the internal and so you know when that company went under I didn't leave my apartment for a month kind of reminiscent of course of what we're going all the way through now but that was not because of some horrific pandemic that was because of.

As watching you in studio now, we are going to focus primarily on the Chicago region. But first and foremost, I know you spent your first and second rounds in Louisville with the cards oval has moved onto the Sweet Sixteen. What were your key takeaways from watching Jeff walls team on our first weekend? Well, let me ask you Leshan ahead. You called little this year. I have not had Louisville this year. Okay. Well, this is my very first takeaway because this was the first time I called Louisville this year. And without a doubt watching Asia and person is much as much more exciting and fun and impressive than watching her on TV. That's my number one. Takeaway, she is an incredible player. She's fun to watch. She makes. The game. Look so easy. And you hear this term probably overused this player. Let's the game come to her or let's the game come to him. Whatever Asia d'or is the appear to me of letting game come to her. She doesn't force things. And it is she played it beautifully. Now. Jeff walls was able to get Erica qarterback in that second game Sam furing as well. I'm with you on Asia d'or, I have not had Louisville this year. But I've seen her a ton in person. I even used to watch her at high school in person 'cause he's from Atlanta. But what did you think about the status of Erica Carter and Sam furing moving on? Did you see what you feel like you needed to see from those two after injuries and absences in the ACC tournament? Yes, definitely they did not show any ill effects of an injury. And I was probably most impressed with Eric Carter because she sat the first round game out against robber. Moore's played. It and started the second round game. And you could not tell she was coming off an injury at all her energy met her shot was not there lucianne like I think she ended up one of seven something like that. But no ill effects of the injury outside of disres- shot. Not dropping. Well. See what they did against Robert Morris? Obviously Jeff walls miss that team due to a suspension from last year's NCA tournament. And then bay crushed Michigan. I thought Kim Barnes Areco team was going to give them a go. But just could not keep up with Louisville. The cards will move on to play Oregon state. So that would be interesting. I think Carter is going to need that shot for sure because got Ruak is a great defensive coach. And we'll definitely be prepared to take away Asia d'or if not some other options from Louisville, But let's let's focus on Chicago. Some very interesting matchup the first one that stands out to me is definitely Notre Dame against Texas. Am and this is a matchup that a lot of people are looking forward to for obvious reasons. Number one and two Ari gay Goumba wa and Kennedy Carter, no doubt, two of the best scores in the country to very explosive players now in your opinion..

It was a thirty point win ninety two to sixty two highlighted by forty seven point game from Asia door which ties school record, by the way that she set last year. She said an ACC record by hitting eleven over seventeen three point field goals. Even with all that though Jeff walls noted that was the one girl show. Everybody's gonna talk about Asia's forty-seven. What I want to talk about is our twenty three assists to five turnovers. And what these young women did today know Asia was shooting the lights out question about it. And they did a great job of finding her and getting her the basketball, and that's what a good team does. And this is a pretty good team. Sam fearing also a double double twelve points, twelve rebounds and five assists, North Carolina State at one time was last unbeaten team in women's play. People are going to be cranky tomorrow because it'll be late. Although I don't know that it'll be riveting we've had great NFL games over the weekend. Those were there were several those were were really unbelievable. By the way, the bears and the eagles game had this massive audience. And then it moved to the Golden Globes because in my house, that's where we changed seats. My wife. Macy's sort of half looking. The caymans. Like, all yours. This is the NBC Golden Globes. You know, what I did went back to the bedroom? Went that way. Got my laptop flipped on NFL network. Watch the eagles and bears game again that was better than the Golden Globes although late I did fall asleep. And I don't know if it's midnight, or whatever it was I felt my wife role in there. And she said my hair the Golden Globes wasn't that good? Really? I mean, she likes green book green book, she's talking to me, I'm sound asleep. And she's talking and yet here I am retaining this three o'clock the next afternoon. She was upset that the green book movie didn't get more. Didn't get best picture. I think it was rhapsody. She's telling me all this and I'm gonna dead sleep. It's like I gotta tell today this morning. She said ask James Saint James about that. Like, he doesn't he's the he'll be home with us in a little while he's from Hollywood. He's our Hollywood reporter near the Golden Globes. Oh my gosh. The opening monologue. I did watch this morning on something some sort of a feed and this all this pussyfooting around about trying to not offend anybody. Now, I get that. They're trying to do a joke. Like, they're we're roasting people. And then they're really complementing them is like okay that would have worked. I guess if he did that one time, but they use it as the premise for the monologue. Gimme Ricky Gervais sunny day. It's a matter of fact, I posted the Ricky Gervais I had to go back and watch Ricky surveys after I saw this weird Wimpy gutless monologue earlier today. So I put her on. Hey, Terry dot com. You can compare the two that is the Ricky Gervais 2016 monologue. That was his second appearance doing that. Versus last night's. And it's like we really this spineless. We can't make any jokes about anything all the time. And it's all so phony and hypocritical because the stars are again wagging. They're fingers in the faces of everyone telling all of us how wrong and bad. We are we're bad to each other. We're bad to this planet. You should be like us. And then the game the show's over and they get back in. Well, they probably go to parties all night long for free cocaine and oars, and then they get on private jets and fly to wherever they need to where they're met by some breathless pack of employees with a fleet of SUV's to take them to the mention or the whatever the fence building is somewhere where they're protected from regular scum like us. But when it's time to get you to buy a movie ticket or a book or their new album. They love you, and your discretionary, Ed gab. It's the same thing over and over at ratings terrible on the Golden Globes last night. And the bears in the eagles gave you a massive audience to roll in. That's that's a gift when you have a massive audience to roll. And I think he got up to like forty three million people in that last half hour of eagles and bears which is exciting. We'll hear audio. Of course when the bears kicker and the eagles quarterback Nick foles and then some audio from tonight's combatants national championship, Nick Sabin. And he's not worried about the getting his sixth title. He's just he just wants to put his guys on a good place, sway of sure whatever and the devils. Look good, tumbleweed wells IRS. I don't know. I have a feeling this could be this could be a lopsided game tonight. But we'll see how it all plays out. Also on the show today. Jeff walls is the head coach of the Louisville the women's basketball team they happen to be number two in America. The new polls came a little while ago. Great win at Duke in Cameron indoor that's a first time ever. Els one at Cameron women's team fantastic and all good on that front. So we'll talk with him about four thirty five today about this game coming up Thursday versus number one Notre Dame, and there was a little odd.
