"Careful of, right? Yeah. But also you didn't get three or four pieces of candy back then. There were no big chocolate bars. It was like, you got whatever was left over from the last Halloween. And it was always small. And yeah, I mean, that's just how it was just different. But thank goodness. There was never a Jeff and Stan, you know, cowboy and Robert type of coordinator. I'm thinking like I'm thinking like red holds men and you know, Bill Bradley or something like that. You know what's crazy? We grew up on the West Coast, right? Right outside of Oakland. And Martinez, California. So we were big, you know, warrior fans a's fans. Back in the heyday. But here's it's just so different now because everything's a picture now, right? It is. And I love watching. I'm like, you know, I'll see pictures of like, but there were no pictures back then. So you were dressing up just for not even because you enjoyed it. You just knew you had to have it to go out and people giving you candy. It was a straight, you know, I want candy. I have to dress up here. Let's do it. Quid pro quo. We all understand what's going on. Last thing, and you can take it if you want. Otherwise, I'll let you go. I'm not a big baseball fan anymore, but I've been having the World Series on in the background when I don't feel like watching NBA games. I will give it to you. Convinced me neutral ish baseball fan. Who hasn't really paid attention and only knows like the very broadest strokes of whatever is going on. Why I should not be cheering against the Astros as garbage can slamming cheaters. Jeff van Gundy defend your team. Well, first of all, I can't defend what they did. Like, I don't even want to. It was disgraceful. And unnecessary because they were great before they did it and they've been great after they've done it. They didn't need it. So that was a terrible lapse in judgment. But that being said, I am still wearing my great T-shirt that says y'all still mad. Like for those whiny Dodger fans complaining about the the championship with that was stolen from him. No it wasn't. We beat your ass, okay? That's that. Okay. Now, can they beat Atlanta? I don't know. Down three two, you know, Verlander out the whole year. You know, mccullers out now. We don't have our top two starters. But I'll say this. Regardless of who wins, we either have a 72 year old manager who I love and dusty baker, getting his first World Series win or a man who manages the braves with who's been in that same organization for 45 years. Now, we may be cheaters, but I got to say this. Until I hear somebody come out and say that that stupid job that they do in a position of power needs to be eliminated as fast as the take vow that we were talking about, then I say the Astros have the advantage and they're going to figure out a way to win it. Dusty baker and the guys, man, it's going to be fun to watch game 6. Jeff van Gundy, nobody does it better than you. Thanks for.

"It plays to their strength like how strong they are. Like, a little bit more is let go. Like, you can't like, you know, I think with Lowry butler, PJ Tucker, and out of bio, I think it's been I think everything has fallen into line. And again, can they sustain? Can they stay healthy? But you're right. If you're a listen, if your top ten in offense with what they should be defensively, they got a heck of a chance. To play from a high seed this year. I will see the floor to you now. You brought up officiating, you and I have been. You're the driver of the eliminate the take foul the Euro fell, whatever garbage you want to call that fell. The clothesline bear hug in transition. You've been driving the bandwagon. I've been riding shotgun with you for 5 to ten years now to the point that I'm tired of talking about it. It's just unfathomable to me that the league even having created a rule in the G league, like the NBA owns the G league and they made a rule to try and stop this that they have not tried harder to stop it in the NBA. It drives me a bananas. I feel like it's just falling on deaf ears. They clearly don't care enough to do anything about it. You now, you've complained about it a lot, you're absolutely right, the world agrees with you. Basketball is good, bear hugs are bad. But now you have a specific proposal that you want to put forth to the world. Please Jeff van Gundy speak on it. So what I hate is that it's called the eurofoil because it's not, because they've eliminated in Europe. Fema basketball, it's two in the ball, right? So I watched John Moran against Golden State the other night. And draymond green basically tackled it at half court. And everybody wants more action. And there's never more action in an NBA game than in transition. So we should all be putting our heads together to try to give our players the best chance to create action. Like I said, the NBA, the way they've like, they've eliminated all the BS foul calls. I couldn't be happier. I think it's a better game. It's a better product to watch. But they can't stop now. They have to address this. I watched at Boston. I think it was Boston Charlotte game. And there were 6 called in a relatively take vowels in a relatively short period of time. Sometimes teams will even take them in the penalty. Like they'll just because players instinctively just do it. So my rule is you have a separate penalty situation. But it could be, you can set the number. It could be the first time you do it. The second time, the third time, whatever you decide, number wise, it's fair. But if a foul occurs with 20 or more on the shot clock, that leads to two in the ball eventually. Whatever you set the number. After the second time you do it or the third time. Or the first time I don't care, you could do it all the time. But obviously you don't want that in the last two minutes of the game because when you're coming back on a rebound, you know, you're going to foul right away to save time. So in the first 46 minutes, you have that. I think it's imperative. You do it not by if you're in transition or not. You do it because fouling should be punished. Fouling is not something that should be applauded. How about this? Run back and stop him in transition. You watch these fouls. It used to be a minor problem that used to just drive me crazy. Now it's taking away action from our fans. And as much credit as the NBA deserves right now for the new filing interpretations that they've put in that are being universally praised except if you're one of those guys who used to make a mockery of the game, they need to be held to account. I don't know what the rule is in the G league, but just make a first step. It doesn't have to be perfect. All we have to do is everybody acknowledge we are going to eliminate. I have no problem too with leaving it up to the referee's discretion. If you don't like mine, that's their job. That's what they should have discretion. They'll say that we want to take decision making out of the referee's hands. And that to me is ludicrous because that's like saying, I want to take decision making out of a point guard's hand. These guys are paid a lot of money. You know when a foul is a take Val, even if it's disguised, like it's got to be punished and punished harshly. And I think the radical step of doing it immediately. The competition committee should meet tonight. Institute it put it in tomorrow. Will there be growing pains? Yes. Who cares? Do it now. Don't wait. You don't have to study it anymore. It's an absolute like, I don't know what the right word is, but it's a such a negative mockery, a sham mockery. You have to combine two words. It's that good. I'm going with that dead. I just think and also the secondary thing which you don't see as much anymore, but the hacker whoever foul, if you institute something like that, because those always.

"Phoenix is two and three. You know, I watched, I've watched both of their last two games. I just, are you worried about is too early, right? Given what happened to Booker playing in the Olympics, you saw it up close, then he was out with health and safety protocols, Chris Paul's aging, they had a long run. Phoenix to me, they're just so rock solid that I think they'll be fine. They don't look particularly sprightly right now and spirited and spunky and zipping around, but I have faith in the suns. They've earned enough credibility with me. Yeah, and I think again, every year is different. You know, like, people age, people have different mentality. You have the Deandre ayton situation, contractually. And I remember back in when we went to the finals with the Knicks in 94, the next year, same team great team great health, we were 12 and 12. I believe on Christmas. And it wasn't like there was not one thing you could point to as the issue, but it was an overall malaise a little bit. It wasn't even like we weren't trying hard, but like you were mentioning, it wasn't the same feeling, like, you know, getting over losing in the finals is not easy, it's not easy at all. And I think. They have a lot they had a lot go on in the off season. And I just think it's much harder. Everybody just says to bounce back, but when you lose an opportunity where you felt like you could have won it, and maybe you should have won it in your mind. It's not as easy, just to snap your fingers and find that level of enthusiasm or energy or all in to the cause again. It may take them a little while and that's again, why you let things play out over time. And like in 15 or 20 games, everybody will have a better idea in every coach could then evaluate his team. Properly and say, you know, this is what needs to be corrected. Yeah, Phoenix and Chris Paul has a made shots for most games this season. Jay Crowder was ice cold from three until the other night. Dave mis campaigned a couple games. And he kind of jolts their team. I mean, particularly when you're giving his mid stell for Payton, he's a jolt that they really miss. The Tory Craig piece was an interesting mini loss for them. I actually feel that void when I watch them play like that void of just another wing to come in and create havoc on the offensive lines of great offensive rebounder, defend. Well, I think they'll be fine. You open the door for me, coach are you ready? You mentioned you brought up the mid 90s next. You open the door. For me, I'm gonna tease Chris herring's book, blood in the garden about the 1990s Knicks, and there was one when I was gonna have you on in February or something to talk about everything in this book. There was one anecdote in the book that involves you, you're a central character in the book that I literally read and laughed in my house by myself. I tackled out loud like an idiot and was like, I have to ask Jeff van Gundy about this anecdote when I get him on the podcast. So are you ready? Yeah? The year is 2000. The year 2000 I feel like I'm Conan O'Brien. In the year 2000, you have an assistant trainer on your team. His first name is not on this page. I don't know what his first name is last name is hamdan. Do you remember her ham? Yeah, sight. Yeah. Okay, so here's the story he tells about you. And as a lifelong mets fan, die hard mets fan, not anymore on laps. This story both made me laugh really hard and hit me like a little bit of a knife to the gut. The story, the background of the story is how much you care about winning and losing and how you want others around you to feel it in the wake of a loss as deeply as you feel it, okay? So you are the story. I'll just read you the quote. This is Saeed ham done talking. We were on a flight coming back from a preseason win and I got in trouble for yelling, yes, let's go mets after they clinched a spot in the World Series in 2000. The next day, Jeff calls me into his office and says, I need to have more respect for the sanctity of winning and losing. And I told him Jeff, the sanctity of winning and losing his wife. Yelled, let's go mets. They just made the World Series. And he just looks at me and says, get the out of my office. True or false. I have known knowledge or memory of that at that actually. He clearly he clearly does. Yeah, or he made it up. Because here's the thing, I really, like, I could see that in a playoff game. I'm not so sure I could see that in a preseason it says. In a preseason game and what makes me question that story even more is I was a mets fan. So I would have probably been all in on the mets at that time anyway. I love Bobby Valentine. I love the mets. Currently running for mayor of Stanford, Connecticut, by the way, Bobby bell. Yeah. I know, you know what, I just saw him at an event a 9 11 event. I was in the city for. We were on the same panel. And I'm going.

"Willing to do to make it work and the level of sacrifice that they're willing to give so that there is successful they would wanna be. If the level of sacrifices high. The results will be good. It may not always look good. There will be some struggles. I'm sure on nights just like goes talking about with the olympic team where they're used to have the ball in their hands morin. It feels funny. Maybe frank asks westbrook to play in different spots on the floor then. He's accustomed to but anthony. Davis to me has always been a sacrificer. Like you know he. He went to l. a. Knowing he was going to take a back seat but still playing this huge role James is a natural giver. Westbrook is you know a one man fast-break which may give them you know some opportunities that maybe they didn't have so maybe they can all carve out their own niche. I think defensively it's gonna be the thing for westbrook and also in the half court. How do they space and give their best players enough room to work with but again if they start from a place that they wanna make it work and they're not resentful of having to sacrifice then they'll figure it out that doesn't mean they're gonna win championship but that means that they're going to be able to play well have enough harmony and chemistry to give themselves a chance to win it. And i think frank vogel is the perfect coach to make it all work. He's as eagles of coach as you would find He is terrific a getting guys to do things that they may not necessarily want to do but must do for the team to win a while taking no credit for so i think you know if their level of sacrifices i they'll be very successful coach. Jeff van gundy congratulations on the olympics in a long run with team usa. I hope you get some sleep. Get reacclimated get some time off before we started doing this again. And we'll talk to you in the preseason. Thank you all right take care..

"Talked to bobby mark. I talked to people are league date. Can't functionally trade for damian. Lillard until december fifteenth when they can trade some of the big money guys. They just signed including randall. He's not trade l. After sign that extension. So philly's got to be sitting there thinking boy. We would love some disruption in portland to happen soon on the flipside phillies facing its own clock. And i don't know what you can say about this. The ben simmons situation is kind of a ticking clock to like. I don't know what happens. I don't know what that looks like at training camp. So there's all these variables of timing floating around us really fascinating. It was fascinating to me. Is that i think the number one team who should be going after ben. Simmons is portland because when you look at portland. They're the team. That's always saddled with parameters as damian lillard now but what if there were no. Daniela had mccullum. And you had a powell and others who you look at covington and all these other guys. I mean the point. Is that if you look at them. Even though you've had guys like nerve kitchen the lineup. And what have you for the most part the portland trailblazers have been a parameter oriented team. What you haven't had as a stout defender was also an elite playmaker for some of those shooters that you have to me. If you're gonna lose damian lillard you lose it to get somebody like a ben simmons along obviously other piece of stuff. Yeah lots of stuff at you definitely make sure you get your hands on a ben simmons because that could be a huge plus cashier couple of quick ones before we let you go on a problem. What's the what's the most fun you ever had in an nba game. What's the best. Nba game you've ever seen just as just purely as someone who's they're taking it in even if you're working to game like you're not a fan you're working again. What's what's the best game you've ever seen or the most fun. If that's a different game. I will tell you if you wanna pick out a game. I would tell you game. Seven western conference finals two thousand one sacramento of versus the los angeles lakers of the one. I brought up with c. Web blahdy bibi against kobe. Shaq robert orientals boys that was something to behold how back and forth that series gone It was it was a special experience. No doubt about that. When we talk about series me being beat writer for the philadelphia inquirer covering seventy six watching vince. Carter scored fifty one game. Alan iverson fifty another and they were going back and forth back and forth. I remember philadelphia. Lost the game and i think vince carter had like fifty four. That game and i walked up to billy king. Who was then the general manager of the philadelphia. Seventy sixers at the time. An billy king wasn't mad at all. He was like many. You happen the idea what we're witnessing right now. He said i've never seen anything like some special special stuff. You know he set to watch them. Go back and forth like this. He wasn't even mad. They lost no. He was confident they were gonna win the series but it was something fascinating to just be a witness to. And you're talking about a guy that i was there. When jordan crossover byron russell and pulled the game six to win his last championship. I was there for that moment. I was there for a lot of moments but seeing that that philadelphia run was something special. But that game seven between the lakers and the sacramento kings still stood out in my mind as an in person spectate. What's your under the radar league pass team for this coming season. What's a team. That's not a star team. Maybe not a contender but a team. You just like i kind of excited. Like flip over to them and watch them in the fourth quarter one night while. I'm not excited about anybody. That's not a contender. You i would tell you the teams that are less contenders than the rest Atlanta really shocked me she. I was very impressed with them. And trae young But the team. That i'm watching out for men is denver. Because i got news for you jamal. Marie had gotten hurt. I don't know of if we would have been looking at the clippers. I don't know if we would have been looking at utah. I i don't know we would have been looking at phoenix. I just think some of the pieces that denver has a guy like murray. If he was ready if he were healthy that would have been something to behold. I don't think you know this. But i have said on this podcast many times. They trade for aaron gordon day. Rip off a big winning streak including an emphatic. Asking the clippers in l. a. With aaron gordon garden leonard. Right i was this close before jamal got injured to saying i'm picking the denver nuggets to win the 2021 nba championship. So i am with you. One hundred percent and that injury all injuries are are crappy. That one the timing of it it was just and the chemistry he and yokich average is such a special playoff weapon. That was just a gut punch. Let me say this to you real quick. Here's the one reason. I never picked denver because as phenomenal is yokich is is one big problems. Anthony davis and i didn't know at the time that anthony davis would be so hobbled. Come to playoffs anytime you got. Anthony davis against yokich. It's a problem because anthony davis can really defend and offensively. He can match numbers wise and defensively. Obviously he's a problem. Also i that that. That's the one guy that i don't think yokich as any answer for he's gonna get us numbers of course but he can't jump onto a curb and you're not gonna be able to play the way. He plays doing everything that he does what everybody else. You're not gonna be able to do that so easily. To anthony davis. I'll give you my two two teams and you can riff on this and i'll let you go does answer my own question. I think a popular league pass answer is going to be the hornets. I'm really interested to see how the mellow looks in your two bridges. Washington uber fits their. I'm excited for that team. And i'm really fascinated to see what this bull's team looks. Like with the rosen with levin and vucevic and lonzo your years. You're shrug and you don't you don't love it. I love them. But i'm interested to see how they play the hornets a young athletic and athletic. And i think we're bridges and melody definitely box office I don't think they have the personnel To do anything pass early. It's early as it pertains to chicago. His my thing levin special. I'd give anything to see him in the knicks uniform. I really would he special Derosier we know is a veteran who can put up buckets. You like them together..

"The nets the undisputed championship favorites next season. If they're healthy question and i agree. I don't think it's i don't. I don't even think i don't have an argument for any other team. They're so good too good on. I love their draft picks by the way as well and then too good. And i just think it to see kevin durant back being the absolute superstar that he is and knowing what james harden is when he's healthy and knowing what kyri the selflessness you watch zach. They were very selfless with each other. They were sharing the basketball with each other. They didn't care who got off. It was no there were no e there was no one ego trip and i give them a lot of credit for that and i think that's steve nash. Having a year under his belt along with the fact then. Tom dantonio is gone. And that will you know. Put him in a position to do even more with the brooklyn nets. i think. I expect the brooklyn nets to be even better than they were. There's you to championship. If they're hell it all comes down to health obviously but the championship is theirs to lose. I think i think they're significant. I think there are better than the lakers. And i think they're better than the bucks and after that i. I don't those three to me. Start the season in their own kind of tier and in the lakers. You know we'll see someone in the west is going to rise up and challenge. Lakers or the lakers are going to have more hiccups than i think some people are expecting. I don't think this is just like a rolled out super team no-brainer. Sixty wins for the lakers. I think they're going to have some stuff to figure out they'll figure it out but that makes it more compelling more interesting but here's the bottom line with the brooklyn nets in this day and age where perimeter shooting and god play maddow's perimeter play matters. The brooklyn nets are better perimeter shooting team. Then those teams that we mentioned in walk in la and they're better free throw shooting tape. What did you think of your hometown. New york knicks off season. -fornia burks no well derrick rose and on and on What what's your temperature. take me. I was happy in this regard. Campbell walk on praying that his knees alright his legs. Okay because i think when is good for twenty night. And he's shotmaker and the shock creative himself. And i think that's what they needed from that position forty-eight i like the fact that they have somebody who can put the ball on the fourth grade own shot. Good seventeen eighteen night. As opposed to a guy like bullock who is a standstill shooter and couldn't do anything once you got in this face The fact that you've got that you retain derrick rose and quickly was a good thing. I especially like the fact that they we signed julius randle to the four year. One hundred seventeen million dollar deal. julius randle is not a supermax of play. He's not a guy. I don't like to be guys pockets like that. But he's not a guy that i wanted to see. Get a hundred and eight hundred ninety million not that they were going to be able to do that. This go round because we know that. But i'm just saying. I didn't want him counting like that against their cap Is good as he was averaging. Twenty and ten being my comeback player of the year and the league's comeback player at a year or fourth on your mvp ballot. Check four hundred. It's right hit. The my problem with him is that He's a one armed. Bandit when you know the screaming he's going left he's going left and that's exactly what he did him in rj barrett I think they should have been kidnapped. And and handcuffed. Left hand should have been handcuffed. They shouldn't be allowed to use their left. Hand till the season begins. That's how big i am about that. So i like the fact that you got that number You upgraded the point guard an off guard position in that mitchell. Roberson this coming back. Who's good for two plus blocks game and he's an interior presence defensively. So i look at the knicks as a team. That didn't go backwards. I still compete. Expect them to compete for top five seed in the eastern conference. And i can live with that. Here's here's my question for you mentioned barrett. You've been talking about lillard as a potential knicks target for a while now on the let me be clear with four cambrian. Mk before go ahead. Well before that's right before kemba came and like you said cameras knee. We got to see what it looks. Like maybe clear. Damian lillard is not available to blazers. Don't want to trade damian lillard karimi. Lord hasn't asked for trade. Let me just right up front. So here's my question to you if that comes to pass because if you forced me to bet right now we'll damian lillard be available for trade sometime in the next eighteen months i would bet yes i wouldn't feel like i wouldn't bet my slice savings on it but if you're asking me gunpoint i'm gonna say yes if that comes to pass you've talked about the knicks. Gotta go all in to get damian lillard. So here's here's what that question boils down to to me is rj barrett going out in that trade or do you hold the line at rj barrett dodgy barrett. I hold the line. Of as long as i possibly can. About a unionist randall about a mitch robinson but not an rj barrett If you have to lose an rj barrett in order to get damian lillard You do what the hell you have to do. me personally. That's how i feel about it I think you know. I think right now because of the pieces that they have in place Even though i know that he would want to go to new york before anywhere else. I think if you're philadelphia with embiid you do everything you can to try to get damian lillard. You absolutely do that. Because i don't think he'd be able to summarily dismissed philadelphia seventy sixers if he wanted out a portland. He's incredibly reluctant to leave. Poland doesn't wanna leave doesn't like what was transpiring chauncey billups actually wasn't necessarily his first choice But it's one of those situations where you look at any you say to yourself. Okay okay. let's see how this goes on. And i think he's going to end making that decision electing to stay in poland not asking for trade and seeing what they're gonna do but i could see that if things continue to look as they have that he decided to go to a major market like new york because he believes he'd be able to recruit if he was in new york and he doesn't want to join super team. He wants to create his own if he if he has to go that route. And that's important because the the follow up question you hear from people as well okay. So they trade the farm for damian. Lillard you got damian lillard. Julius randle and some role players like what. What good is that. That's not going to be any better than portland for him. But your view is you gotta think longer term. You gotta think longer lens that thinks another guy will come. His view is that he would be able to recruit for what i've been told. That's what i've heard that you've got guys that would want to come and play with him if he were not in the pacific northwest. And the you were in a market. Like new york now you no one is really talked about this. But as a knicks fan you should be rooting for him to take sweet sweet time. Because i don't think anyone's really pointed this out but philadelphia who doesn't face that same question because they have joel embiid so you don't have to wait. What are we doing we have. We have already there. Philadelphia right now has a four month window where they have a huge advantage over the next because the knicks right now..

"Heard you say you talk about the nets and you would max debating. How much pressure does kevin durant have on him to win with the nets nursing way of saying what about what about james harden the guy who hasn't lesin one yet and then you said something. I thought you said boy. Do i wanna see that. And that's lakers final spoi-. Would that be. Would that be fun to see so. Let me ask you this when you say something like that on. Espn you know that. The reaction of of fans in milwaukee and phoenix and other playing well. He's he's already. He's rooting for this star laden finals. That doesn't make me feel good about how. Espn respects my team. Or whatever how. How do you react when you hear that kind of that kind of line of thought. I don't give a damn. I never will. And the reason. Why is. Because i think that you gotta understand something about music man. I grew up. You know. I grew up not just watches sports. Howard cosell's of the world. The brian gumbo world. I used to. I mean why jimmy. The greek nerve cross with brent musburger now on cbs and stuff like that you know and and and watching boxing with my dad from the time i was three years old and stuff like that but i also watched. Ted koppel i watched peter jennings. I watched you know guys like that in iraq and i always recall. It's incredibly important than when people are looking at you on tv. They know that you mean what the hell you say and the thing about it is. Is that what you do what i do and others you know. I have a newspaper background. I've been a journalist over. Twenty five years bothers the living. Hell out of me. About what a lot of us. Not all of us but a lot of us do for living no. I'm not trying to create any enemies. I don't want people to me. I don't want people to dislike me. But i'm also not in this business to be liked. My job is to let is to do everything that i can to get as close to the truth as possible. And then give you what. I got as a journalist. I'm supposed to be objective as a pundit and commentator. I can be subjective but be honest about that subjectivity. That's like somebody get mad at me for being the knicks fan. Well dammit. i grew up. In hollis queens. I grew up there. Were no brooklyn nets. I am a knicks fan. Okay even though. I grew up ten minutes away from say stadium before they got city field. I was a yankee fan. My father did not allow us to watch the mets in our household. Until i was eighteen. That hurts me to hear. It hurts me for the mets. And so i never saw until i was eighteen years old. I love like it's like. Why would i go on the air and all of a sudden engaging selective amnesia or deny that truth is my job to let you know. I never listen. Milwaukee's a great sports town. Utah's a great sports town sacramento when sacramento was in the conference finals. I loved watching chris. Webber vladivostok bibi. Mike vivian story vich in the crew. I loved watching all of them. But if i had to choose between sacramento and l. a. and the nba finals. Where the hell did you take. I wanted to be june. And i think you're speaking for a lot of fans who wanna see the stars go against each other on the biggest stage and that's hard for some fans in other markets to swallow because they think why isn't he. Espn talk about utah. Endeavor i sympathized with those fans but there are a lot of fans who just wanted to see brooklyn lakers because of the stars is a difference. You you have a point as a fan if we never talk about those people because they're small market because that's bs we. We talked about janas. He deserved it or it doesn't matter what market he's in. We talked about donovan mitchell. We're gonna talk about a lot of teams in smaller markets. 'cause they deserve it. The fan is right to expect that what they no right to expect this. Oh i'm not supposed to have a rooting interest. I'm not apologizing to anybody for wanting to route wanting to knicks to it. It's not gonna stop you from calling them srb if they sorry. But if. I want the knicks to win. I'm not apologizing for. And if i want to be in la instead of milwaukee. "I wanted to zoom out and go over the big picture landscape with someone who talks on our airwaves every day about the nba. Dhs is favourite league. I think the one. And only the greatest showman in show business and tv for espn stephen smith. Our you sub man. How you doing man glad to finally be here. I'm thrilled to make it happen. You are out in la. So let's start there you talked. I was listening to you on. I take a few days ago. Talking about russell. Westbrook in the amount of pressure that's on russell westbrook. But tell me about you know how. How do you think he fits. Lebron how what are you looking for him. How does he have to changes game or does he have to change his game. Well listen. I think i think both have to modify to some degree. Lebron can't be as ball dominant as as he has been off making all the decisions. Because that's one of the reasons rusting wanna be in houston anymore as you. Well know Because he didn't want to be you know sitting on the sidelines. Playing the role of spectator being on the plane and roller spectator watching james audit. Well that's not gonna change lebron james. He's happy to be back home. He's happy to be la. He's happy to be on a title contender which he is on. We get all of that But in the end he still russell westbrook in you know credit to him. You know like. I told you we've had to be. We've all had to be critical of him at times. What we know that. He's an electrifying talent. The most athletic point guard we've ever seen in nba history. We know he's a walk in triple double and we also know. He never cheat to game with his effort when he's out on a court it's always one hundred percent and so when you look at the slow. Almost snail like pace that the lakers could could. Could you know what wouldn't prone to plan towards playing at at tom's in the past and now you've got somebody like russell westbrook all of a sudden and lebron having a night off. Ad having a night off isn't as daunting as it was the previous two years. I think that helps them during the regular season. And then i think once the postseason comes whatever it takes to win is what i think the character in russell westbrook and lebron james will do.

"Good beyond good okay. I didn't even know there was an app. Yeah so but here's the thing. I took some grease that. I traded my youngest daughter. Ford wanted trade. My youngest daughter for mark jackson's one daughter and people said like so then my younger daughter context stand. When i said he made he has to prove that he belongs on the team. Like we're not giving out like spots on to win. You're trying to win the food. I'm trying to win the listen. He's smarter than me but that doesn't be the higher level of intelligence actually wins family feud it's not a intelligence thing so he has to earn his spot. While since. that comment about stan might. They've formed their own super team in their mind. And now they're saying that. I may not even be able to be on their team so i may be. One of the jolted owners that thinks he was trying to put together a super team and the super team left. I might be seeing. Stars are now gone and out dislike by myself right so you know this is like i'm a little disappointed that they took us so harshly that they you know their feet. What's the term now. They're in their feelings. But it's real. And i might not have a spot to go to so if you were on the family feud would you want to be the first guy like the number one. The there's always the matriarch or the paycheck. That's the head of the family right. no i don't earn. I haven't earned that. I think i'd be better in spot for inspired war specifically yes fought for. I'm good. i'm not great. I need a lebron james. I haven't found that in my family yet. I'm searching for that. Lebron james anchor. I might have to go. You know what. I don't think you should have to like me as general manager from the fourth spot though i'm not just keeping it immediate family. I'm searching out the best even like my fourth cousin. Right i want. It's twenty five grand. I think right to jared i. I don't know what it is. But the reason i ask is my favorite family. Feud moment is when the defense is trying to steal like family a has struck out and they're trying to steal and each family member like gives her suggested answer for the steel and the head of the family ignores them and goes out on the limb for his or her suggestion and wins. And that's like that's still walk off moment of the family feud when you're in your your entire family that's like picking trae young over luka doncic like you better you better get it right. It could also be like picking. Marvin bagley over. Luca dodgers you better. You better get that right. That's the gutsy. Family feud moment that i love and they never think someone else has the better idea. Like i don't know why everybody waste their time. Screening an answer because the dude in charge is always picking his own answer. You could get on any game show ever. what are you picking twenty thousand dollars pyramid. I interesting love that show. You know what. I'm going supermarket. Sweep because i will choke in any show. That's about intelligence. I'll show under pressure. Like knowing my luck i'd get on jeopardy and basketball would be the final jeopardy and i would miss it so i want to turn my brain off and just run around like throw hams in a shopping cart and try to win that. I've watched that. Like i don't understand like what is the strategy. Is it hams or hams too. Much like they take up too much volume from your shopping carter. This is why it skirts. Some people go for like hoses and household items. Like you really got to prepare. You got to know you know. It's i think it's the most fun. That's when i would do all right coach. Jeff van gundy. Espn abc broadcasts is just the whole team. You and mike breen and mark jackson hall of famer. Mike breen are just are just amazing. Thank you as always for your insight and will be leaning on again as we get down to the wire here all right..

"To stop pulling up at fifteen or jrue holiday men and trying to always at the roman go in and shoot a layup like an old school late right to the rim and even if you miss even if you missed the offensive. Rebound game comes off dribble penetration. So i'm using my is. Nothing worked through the that. Well i'll tell you what worked in the first game that they stopped doing to try to like get janas more space which is brook. Lopez's took one three in game one and he was in the paint. He was posting with ceiling and he was very effective. They sacrifice that to try to open up the floor engage two three and four and played in back behind the three point line and i wonder if there's a way they can combine both so we agree. Okay before you before you interjected which was totally on point. I was like they need to continue doing jaanus pick and roll screener and just go at blake griffin and you saw in game in game four when it was on hand still the net started switching to try and experiment that but to your point when those guards attack you can see guys starting to pull in. Here's a staff for you game. Four fourteen corner threes for the bucks games. One two three combined seventeen attempts total. So they're starting to get the shots that they that they need. And i think part of that was not just as a screener but they were a little bit more unpredictable and how they did it. They had a decoy action. They had they even tried to get middleton and drew holidays two man game going got a couple of threes out of that they would have to one screen and then on the other side like that's how they have to play. But i completely agree with you. I don't really care my point with bringing up. Those numbers was credited. That's defense but is doing this thing that everybody wants to do use. Janas screener resigned. It hasn't worked and that doesn't mean you should stop doing it. It means you have to investigate. What are the nets doing. Well and what are we not doing well enough. Because janas shooting off dribble threes and akeem olajuwon baseline twenty-foot. Turnarounds is not going to work. That's not going to be a half court offense. That works right agree with you. Like they had more five-man actions five men five-man involvement In game four and again even when they went down. I think it was thirty. Seven twenty four. I thought the quality of their shots was so much better. And that's why You know even from the first play they ran. You know a a decoy action. To drew holiday setting a like a decoy back screen and then came off a hand off and was wide open for the three and a drew holiday. Like i don't know why this happens but it does. Some guys get the the brunt of criticism and others avoided. I don't know why that is. He's got to play better on offense right he's wide open and he could turn the corner and he has an advantage. He's pretty good in the post. You saw the move late and game thirty like he had on the right block yet. Another one the l- asking where he just got right to the rim loves using his left hand to finish like he's got a played better. He was brought there at a substantial cost. I think he is a terrific player. I think he's made him a lot more dangerous in the playoffs but in these last three games if they're going to get it done it's not just going to be because of of janas. I think middleton's playing exceptional. These last two games drew holidays going to have to give them that punch that they need offensively commercial support for this podcast is provided.

Mark Jackson is the reason why Mark Jackson isn’t an NBA head coach

"Joe. Lake. Up after mark was let go had a bunch of quotes This was one of them that I found co part of it was that he couldn't get along with anybody else in the organization and look you did a great job. I'll always compliment him mini respects but you. Can't have two hundred people in the organization, not like you. Okay. and he said when I say the organizations whole I don't just mean the team just fifteen players that are involved in the coaching staff I mean everybody there's two hundred employees here. So we look at the organization going forward and the kind of coach we want and not just the performance everything else all these factors matter. We took all of that into account. So we have the player part of it. We have the owner part of it. We knew the front office didn't like him when one of the assistance. was busted for recording Jackson in meetings to play for the front office, which again that actually becomes a pro mark Jackson part of it. The Mark Jackson staff was not good enough the ownership in front office told him repeatedly, the staff is good. Enough Mark said we have the best staff going he and scalping apparently got into it and scalloping he was reassigned the front office didn't like that part of it. So we have the players have the staff we have the ownership we have the front office. Let's also talk about some of the other stuff that's just let's face it. Weird Jackson's Amana Faith I. Don't question anyone's faith. I just say to you leave me alone and I'll do my thing That's the way I've always operated and that rubs people wrong way when he was a head coach but also would find time to get to La whenever he had a convenient off day to go and do that. It's tough to tell a man of faith. Hey, you know what don't be that interested in God? That's that's an almost impossible conversation but if I was at ESPN or anywhere and said, Hey, you know what? I can't watch football this weekend. Because I have this higher calling eventually it worked they'd be like, Hey, you know what? Man Like this is all part of the job being availalbe around is very difficult in tough thing to navigate as I'm not even hundred percent comfortable doing it but I'd have to say employer at the time being frustrated by it actually makes a little bit of sense and I think there's other things that just bumped people out when curry had his ankle issues he was brought up in it was kind of a playful thing curry's brought up they put the holy oil on his ankle and. Jackson's wife at the time and Pete Jackson was like look like he had chronic ankle problems and now he doesn't. So you figure it out. That's one of those things where people like wait what Jackson also had some issues off the core where he was caught up extortion deal and I'm not even really getting on his case for that because I think a lot of things happen to people that are public figures that goes on normal people's lives. But the public figure becomes the of jokes on and on and on. He also said when asked about Jason Collins availability years ago. He said not in my locker room. So it came off as if he was a homophobe because there's evidence that he is, and then when he was asked to clear that up, he said look I know Jas I know his family and I'm praying for them right now. Hey, man you save your fucking prayers. Okay. That's the kind of stuff that just doesn't play no matter who you are and I think the. Most important part of all of this because I guess I'm still maybe a little surprised that he doesn't have a job because other people have been on TV and not been great on. TV. I've looked at other coaches that haven't had great runs and there's been plenty of people that have gotten second chances by the way both black and white. So when I see people out raged that he's been blackballed or as. Shannon Sharpe said White Bald or Kendrick Perkins recently, just saying like all of these things that I just going off on the idea that Mark Jackson doesn't have job it really feels like, okay. Are you informed and but yet you've made up your mind decided not to change your mind or are you uninformed and I think so many people screaming about this or like Oh wait that's right. You know maybe either moments you had just now listening to this like Oh, that's right. I've nothing personal against Mark Jackson. He's one of my favorite college basketball players of all time all-time. You guys know how huge of a Saint John's Fan I am and I actually was you know as a little kid be like dude I can't believe he's going this late in the draft is GonNa be awesome and he was awesome in the knicks I felt so vindicated I was. Like and I could refer team right one day I love Mark Jackson and I was right. But when I listened to him on the broadcast Van Gundy I, think him being on the broadcast Van Gundy chances of getting a job because if I was worth a half a billion dollars or more and had the opportunity to own a team or owned a team right now and I'd go. Van Gundy's on all of these little things like, Hey, look at how they blind me Anthony Davis on free throws already have them on the other side of the court. So he can seal for Deepak smaller offender will there be an adjustment. Hey, what's going on with the substitution? Hey, this rule's actually wrong. Why are they doing it? This Way Jeff Van Gundy will say, here's Hey Jason tatum something's wrong with him. He's the first pointed out it happens multiple times every single broadcast Jeff Van Gundy is easily the best NBA analyst in the game right now. Mark doesn't do any of those things and I. Don't know if that's just him not being comfortable in that role but he's a coach. He's a former player and he doesn't do any of those things. He'll say, Hey, this guy's not just a great score. He's a great individual. He's a human being. Okay. So and so doesn't get enough credit for shooting. Okay. In everything is results based. If the shot goes in, it was a great shot at the shot doesn't go in Hey, that's the guy that shouldn't be taking the shot. It's very. It's very minimal depth and when. You have people that make these decisions. You're almost instead of looking at the resume in Golden State which is on its surface again resume. You'd say Yeah. What like six years? Nicholas gives Scott his shot young team garnered play defense that's hard to do. But I think being next to Jeff. When Jeff runs circles around him on the broadcast. It it might remind go wait why why is this one guy way better talking about the game than the other guy so I think the best thing market do would not be on the broadcast with Jeff and who knows what might happen. So I just think the more we look at it and hey man trust me this is not white guy decide to push back on racism segment because I've. Probably done with those the rest of my life. I'm seeing specific to this one because the NCAA numbers are atrocious. The ABC's the head coaching. Diversity that we have in the pro sports leagues still is not what it needs to be I'm not pushing back on any of those things. But when it comes specific to mark Jackson, there are the informed in the uninformed, and hopefully if you've resisted this, you're more informed now.

Game 5 wraps up of the 2020 Finals

"Moments after exciting. One of the best, finals games in recent memory. Game Five Heat Eke Ekit out to live another day and joining Zach tonight now Chris. Bosh. It wasn't quite. Five to Allen for three. It was quite Bosch Talon. But this is up there with one of the biggest heat wins in history I mean. For sure. It's an incredible game. What did you think of it? Man You know I, it is starting to be one of those series that's just kind of grinding to a halt. You thought that was going to happen is not happening. Everything, every player that she thought was going give this particular stat line is not it's not really transpiring right now but I mean, you have to give all credit to the heat and I kept telling people this in all these interviews you know how can get? The Lakers. Over they've got the uniforms on and I just like, okay he don't WanNa be here but let me tell you something. These guys if there's anybody. Who would embrace a difficult situation? It is Erik Spoelstra and Butler seems to really. Thrive off of that and anticipate that. affected. So it's Kinda like a marker will really hard is. Like they say, Oh hey yeah, we're here now. We're supposed to be competing for championship. This is how it's supposed to be. You know is this all about survival now there they've lived to play another day and that's what you gotta do. I think it's time to just acknowledged. Once and for all that, the heat had become a great team you know there was always this question of. Did they benefit from the hiatus hiatus in everything the bubble shake the bucks more than other teams. Did they benefit from hayward getting injured a really good. You. Know this Lakers seem his lost one game in every playoff series. Until now, they have not lost to to a heat team that is missing its leading postseason score until this series Goran dragic that they could started to acknowledge Jimmy Butler. The top ten player. Yeah that'd be we're. GonNa. Have to rearrange the rankings because this dude just put up thirty five, twelve eleven in forty seven minutes forty seven minutes and five and a half whatever it is it's the game you play dull game. Survived forty thirteen seven on fifteen of twenty-one masterpiece from the Brian. James we can talk about the end of the game if you want. Everyone can focus on the end of the game, but the heat put themselves in position to win at the end of the game. Duncan. Robinson was unbelievable. They're shotmaking was outstanding and this team just keeps in with Bam out bio clearly, not one hundred percent missing layups, missing dunks, he can play better he. To acknowledge the heat now are are for real and just like you were saying, they're short handed to. So you know we need to keep that in mind You can only imagine how the series would be a little different Gora was out there and not that he's just going to be that dominating presence, but he gives them another layer. To their attack and you know they have that team cohesion down pack and I mean, I don't really know where the lapses with the Lakers are happening with dunkin' Robinson. He's making them pay every time. I. Mean He's moving himself up into Lee Company every game because you don't expect them the thing you know you don't think he's going to continue to go on the street. He's he's gone on and you'll eventually figure that a veteran is GonNa get into them and just chase him to the bathroom. But but it hasn't happened yet and I mean they're making them pay every single time and. Boy I. Tell You. We'll. We'll see what happens game six. Years especially with a hobbled a little bit man. That's one of the big cities we should probably get to. Well, let's let's talk about the end of the game real quick. Okay. So a Frank Vogel Lakers coach has come out after this game and said that there were bad calls at the end. Jimmy Butler getting to the line I'm going to have to go ahead and disagree he's probably GonNa give find. Lakers lead the Lakers up one. He, ball they run a beautiful fast play for Jimmy Butler gets A. He screwed good play Lebron not. because. Eighty one moving so whilst I foot Lebron on. Screen Lebron and she goes up but Jeff Van Gundy called on the broadcast he he floats see I mean. It in verticality your whole. Career. Frank Vogel helped invent it with Roy but. He floats. He fails right? That's a foul. Yes. Afoul he jumped into them. You know good call by the resident and you have to give you know usually referees are getting tough time I. Think they called a Great Game Day You can always look on both sides and say, well, if an if but if they're even in the game is tied and the players they're the ones who are dictating what happens out there. Hopefully, the game isn't called. You know at the end by you know free throws or anything like that but all. Evenly called Game I. Feel. Throws. Yeah, each team had their opportunities and. Jimmy Man Jimmy Butler man he's he's continuing to do it. Man I gotta I gotta you gotTa give him props he's going to make give him props I. Mean he put them on their own is back in those last minutes. Man I mean, the one leg get he's hidden one legged fadeaway. You know he's hitting the free throws down the stretch to dribble I mean he's He's shoot free throws when you're that exhausted and not just. Did you her second he was going to miss you like just. To, to, of course, you were not you think he's GonNa Miss One because as a player I know how I would feel I'm GonNa Miss One. On. THAT TIRED Like him going over when he was leaned over panting after getting fouled, you know they burned a time out after that but. Just him just still being able to muster up whatever could and having a concentration suppose still had Chris Bosh on his roster. He would have run that play where you went to the back side. And the coroner. You. Come on you. Play for last second shot several times. So okay. So it makes a two free throws come down. They call time out again, Van Gundy and Mark Jackson. Call on this game all over this. Danny Green is in the game with a know Dunkin Robinson's on Danny Green. They know that they're going to run the screen to try to force Dunkin Robinson they know there's going to be a double with Lebron that's exactly what happens Lebron Drives Zach he drives into a crowd. There's three is three and a half guys there. He makes the basketball play Chris Bosh, which he is made for fifteen years since he's been starting to the playoffs, throws it to the Open Guy Danny. Green is a thirty eight percent three point shooter from that spot according to second spectrum is wide open. So I'll I'll throw them another couple of percentage points. And he missed it. Well I know Danny wants that one back. you know he made the right play it was a crowd I. I think he had the mentality to say, you're not going to beat us. We're sending everything in the kitchen saying and we're just going to close the shooters. They got the play that they were looking for. It was a tremendous play Danny Green slipped out. You kinda tell that the heat we're anticipating that play. Brahms. So able to make a very decent pass out the Danny grains got he got his hands on he stepped right into it. Any other time nine times out of ten he'll make that shot. You know he missed it what the interesting thing was on the rebound market Moore's he had plenty of time and he kind of made a quick decision Brian, opened on the right wing, which is always easy to say a new usually. Yeah. You throw it to ad but he had another big on you know and that was just man I was a tough light. It was very tough sequence. Watching film you. In it again now. You. Know Marquee Foucault Danny Green like he just handed the ball to hand off again Danny was right there funny though when he's when you through the LOB. Through. It I looked under the Rim I saw a d. and I thought again the balls just hand in mid Air I thought okay. I hate that decision because ad Mike, I'm putting the referees in play a little bit their down one, and then of course, the pass was that not an accurate he choked right let's just say. I'm not saying I would say that to mark keeps face in this moment. Do not say that Bryant don't say that. He. What do you WanNa say it's choked. Well he also as you pointed out before we started, you know they were setting the screen it they set for Jimmy on the on the go ahead. Free throws a flat screen by crowder and the flat screen is designed. You know Chris knows when your face in half court, it's designed to make defense. Gessler. Like which way to go, but it is an which wishing the pick he went he went from an angle to switching to the flat. kind of this weird in between space and if you don't, if if you're not demonstrative about your coverage, you'll get exploited

I Disagree with the Second Agreement and I Hope You Take It Personally by TK Coleman

"I disagree with the Second Agreement and I hope you take it personally by tk Coleman of tk. Coleman DOT COM. I like to think in terms of alternatives not absolutes that is instead of adopting an either or logic for problem solving and goal achievement prefer to think in accordance with both and strategies. For example, let's consider the notion of taking things personally self help author. Don Miguel Ruiz has done a magnificent job at popularizing and articulating what is often referred to as the second agreement. Here's a summary of the idea in Ruis. His own words quote whatever happens around you don't take it personally nothing other people do is because of you what is because of themselves all people live in their own dream in their own mind. They are a completely different world from the one we live in only take something personally we make the assumption that they know what is in our world and we try to impose our world on their world and quote. I think that's a very useful idea and I found myself in some pretty lengthy discussions where I've defended it to people who absolutely to test this concept teaches own. I suppose. But as for me, my life has been a heck of a lot easier since I started practicing the second agreement as a critical thinker however, I like to keep my options open. Rather. Than treating ideas like the second agreement as dogmas to be believed in a regard them as value neutral conceptual tools whose usefulness varies with context. Sometimes I like taking things personally even when I know I'm not being personally attacked I deliberately choose to act as if I am being conspired against I usually use this idea as a psychological trick for motivating myself. As long as I can employ the take it personally technique in a way that's healthy and isn't obsessive. I derive great practical value from it. Anyone who's ever played competitive spores probably understands concept very well choosing to look at your competition as the enemy or the bad guys can be an invigorating experience. One of my favorite ticket personally stories comes from Michael Jordan before a soldout contest between the New York Knicks and their rivals the Chicago Bulls Knicks, coach Jeff Van Gundy accused Michael Jordan of being a con man who deliberately X. friendly towards opposing players in order to soften them up and gain a competitive edge over them. Van. Gundy's harsh words were printed in Chicago newspaper and Jordan. saw them before the game. He took it personally and decided to play with a chip on his shoulder for the entire game Jordan had a personal vendetta to show van Gundy just how capable he was having a great game without being nice to his opponents. He did exactly what he set out to do by scorching the Knicks for a red hot one points and one point in the game after hitting an important basket Sharon looked at Van Gundy and yelled at him. One of Jordan's team as reported that Michael Love to us, criticism and hatred as a way of motivating himself a sports commentator who knew of this habit predicted that Jordan would score fiftypoints simply because he would be fired up. I've Angolans words. US, right. Jordan took it personally and brought the best out of him interestingly enough. Here's what Jordan said after the game quote. Guess I. Didn't make any friends out there tonight Jordan smiles I. Think those words were more geared to motivating his players but I don't think on the court they have befriended me, I don't go on the court expecting to make friends. But when I leave the court, I don't take what happened on the court away from me. We're only playing a game. I don't view it as a war away from the game and quote. In a video clip. Jordan talks about how he used that moment as motivation while not letting it get to him in an unhealthy way. Jordan disagreed with the second agreement and it worked does illustrates one of my favorite metaphors for life life a game. As an all games achieving one's goals requires the use of effective strategies. A good strategist is one who remains flexible. He uses what works without ever feeling the need to assign the status of costal truth to any of the strategies in his playbook. If taking it personally works good strategists takes it personally if taking it personally leads to stress and self destructive preoccupation with what others think then it strategist stops to him personally. This attitude of philosophical flexibility can be extended to issues and belief systems. Ideas are just tools sometimes are useful. Sometimes are not which ideas of you when you use them, and how you react to the results is your job to sort out as you sorting through the ever enlarging buffet of ideas being offered in the marketplace be should remember the admonition of Terence McKenna quote nobody smarter than you and quote. You know more about what's best for you than anyone else. So don't take anybody's ideas dogmatically specially now mind think critically about everything. Then take what works for you and leave the rest.

"Studying the issues before us. Yeah he's been great So I I don't follow someone that I like on twitter the reason ninety, nine point nine percent of the time is because they tweet too much. I can't follow people who tweet too much because it gets to be. So if you do speak to say it say to him, you know you've heard some feedback, slow it down a little bit. Keep it going. You know messages a great, but you know he's He's going to burn himself out is my daughter WHO's older she? Twenty Four. She said and I don't know if these terms are right. I don't even know if I heard him right because I don't understand this stuff. He goes he's clouding my feet is. The last ten are stand and I I don't. I can't find other people's. And? I don't know if I heard that right now. You heard it, right? Yeah. That's. So, anyway, I'll try to. Give Him. A heads up that he's got what do you think is that? Like he cut it down to a certain number. Four a day like I. Let's He can do more than four a day. You know. I would keep it to like maybe eight a day eight a day. All right. I'm GONNA give him that I'm going to give him a number. Yeah, and I'll I I don't. All keep track of it. Away from like, you should be able to turn it over to your Twitter manager that he can cut you off at a certain number date. Now, that's your allowance for today. So make a bully do have twitter actually I don't know if they still do but at one point they did have a limit like if you tweeted like I, don't know a hundred times in an hour then they would say like you can't tweet anymore for certain amount of hours. You've hit the limit or something like that. I don't know if they still had that, but they let at one point put in the twitter penalty box. People would say, yes, people say I was in twitter jail that would be the things that people would use. All. Right. Well, speaking of jail enjoy the bubble there in Orlando and looking forward to getting the Games back I. Appreciate you coming on really enjoyed this conversation and You know go get songs at some point from magic mats it. That's it. All right. Take Jim. Thanks Jeff for. Okay. "I mean, I love Madam Secretary. So if I was going to choose, I'M GONNA Walk Madam, Secretary but I think. Again. Living through that I mean there was some great moments against the Bulls and they're. You know. Incredibly disappointing moments, I choose not to watch game five. bj Armstrong's three Charles Smith getting fouled. You know. I choose not to watch that stuff You know I I love watching Old Nick Games at times and but as far as. I, knew what a great player Jordan was I knew how great a team they had Phil Jackson, a brilliant coach So I didn't feel that. You know there was no desire to watch but. I heard it was great and so many people I think benefited from CNN. Greatness even if it was in short snippets. But really understand what a great player and what a phenomena the Chicago Bulls were back debt. You. Didn't want to watch it all. Had No desire when I say negative desire. That's where it was. Gotcha I you. You said Phil was a great coach I. I've said this to you I think before the last night but I will say it again. You calling him big chief travel is one of my favorite moments in. Knicks. History. The this is why I asked about the Lancet I'm gonNA tied into Lebron. I loved the even though even though I was a die hard knick fan back in those days and it was so painful to relive it I. I love the last dance from a media perspective it was very well done and you know like the old clips and all that stuff the. What I hated about the last dance, there was one thing I hated about it then became used. In the Jordan Lebron argument like when it would air every Sunday night, you'd have people saying Oh Lebron could have never done this. Lebron, hasn't done this and I. I hate I hate the Jordan, Lebron argument and I, and the last dance was then used as a way to sort of knock down Lebron which I find preposterous I wanted to get your opinion on that. Not to bore you with my seines, but comparison is the thief of joy. And Whenever you go through these. sophomoric light comparative arguments WHO's better. When you're talking about the all time greats. I'll give you first choice and I'll be happy. With. The second choice and Anybody trying to not what Lebron James has done. Is it's it's just foolish. It's. Foolish nece he. Not only as he degrade player that we see and. He could leak actually end up being the all time leading scorer in NBA history, and it not be his best quality as a player which is remarkable in that you know his passing is by far his greatest. Skill. But I just find like. How he's lived his life, like, why would we be trying to take away from? A man who not only is accomplished so much on the floor but He's lived this. Life of in many ways just. He such a giver of his resources. To help others and I think we should be applauding that. So I, I don't like all these comparisons because they're both just in their own era, their boat, the dominant player of their time. And here's the other reason why the argument is ridiculous if you would like to argue that. Jordan was better than Lebron. That's fine. So basically what you're saying is Lebron is not as good as the greatest players ever played the game I mean and he's now second on the. So what are you really arguing? Well, that was always my problem when. We were coaching. The Knicks is people would say ewing's not as good as Jordan. Well yet and put everyone else in that to like. Oh He's meet you mean he's only like one of the top twenty five best players in the history of the game. Yeah I think I can live with that as a coach, right? So. Again, I don't understand. People trying to pick at greatness I. Don't it sometimes, we have such jealousy and I do think it's a problem. Within teams to to gift to guard what you're trying to find his guys who can be genuinely happy for other people's success Yao Ming like coach in Houston. The absolute best at that I've ever dealt with. Could truly be happy for others success and I think that's what's missing. It's like. Why can't. We. Be. Happy. For both Jordan's greatness and James is great right why you have to pick between them because we have this thing called social media now speaking of which before I. Let you go. I gotta ask because your brother Stan recently joined twitter. He I mean he is. He is on there and he is on fire every day. Are you saying that? Is there any chance stand could convince jeff to join twitter one of these days? No because I would lose my job in probably twelve hours but I had some I didn't know he was going on twitter and I had a friend of mine in Houston reach out to me and said, Hey, stan is delivering some great messages. But he's tweeting at an alarming rate. And then. tweeted me and said stands like the Kenyan marathoner who? Off. sprinting his marathon and you think there's no way he could keep it up but he's still running that fast at Mile Twenty and you know the one thing I'm proud of stand is that he's not speaking from or tweeting or whatever you WanNa, call it from. Ignorance he studies these issues He reads a lot he. Like. He's into it and. He and his wife are. Invested. In so many. Things whether it's elections or. He taught at a a- prison, these last couple years and had me in as a guest speaker, which was a remarkable experience for me up. So he's he puts his resources behind what he says and he also studies up on this stuff so. Not, everyone will share his ideals. I'm so proud of him that he care. So deeply about our country and.

"I. Want to switch gears but also get back to Lebron in in in a way here but The highlight of quarantine in the pandemic for sports. Fans was the last dance on ESPN. Did you. Watch it. Not a second. You, know at funny because I had a feeling that was going to be your answer because obviously live through it and. You know those those you know I listen this up becoming like this whole big thing. But I the NBA back then was totally different animal and for me a much more enjoyable animal. But it they announced the emmy nominations today and. The last dance got three emmy nomination. So I saw that wanted to bring that up to you. I heard it was very well done. Yeah. And like you said, lived it I I knew the result of those games and. I knew about his greatness. So like to me, that was nothing of a surprise. But I do think. I'm happy that it was made because. Younger fans who really. Didn't get to see him play obviously live and who probably wouldn't take the time to go back and watch full games could see in short snippets just how grady was and. You know like when you see highlights of this guy. When you think about what he was able to do and the efficiency he was able to play with when. The rules back. Dead were more slanted or tilted towards the defense than the offense and today it's just the opposite of the rules of the game are more slanted towards the offense, the defense and when you think about. Not Having as much room because. The three pointer wasn't shot with the same. Amount of the sheer numbers but also you didn't have all these shooters on the floor space and then the level of contact that he had he had to play through. Playing Eighty two games a night for young people to see. For older. People. To See like myself even though I didn't want to be reminded of his greatness I think is is terrific because. He was in in my time In my era. Just the difference maker you could play. A great game and you're coming down the end. and. Time and again, he would be the difference. In these close games and I have so much respect for him as a player and as a competitor yet one of the best things for me and I I'm sure that people who are like twenty five and under who proclaimed to be diehard MBA fans are shocked when they showed the old clips of him playing the Pistons in the next I mean those teams just I mean they beat the living shit out of him on the court. You know that's how the game was played. I mean it just was in it's a completely different time. Now that was fun to go back and watch clips Jimmy if you did that today too like. F Curry you might be arrested in in Golden State in ushered out I. Mean it the amount of like the physical contact and the one that. I just. It wasn't against Jordan, but it was John starks. Basically tried to be head Scottie Pippen I mean. Today would be ojection suspension for ten games. called. The common out you know it's just like get up make you free throws and That level of contact day after day year after year that Jordan played eighty two games and huge minutes ghost directly to his toughness mental and physical toughness his level of. Winning And his competitive spirit and. There were number like I I have that same amazement level when you talk about Karl Malone. On stock and how few games they missed. Just. Amazing. And Patrick for the next Patrick Ewing I. Mean that was I've always said I feel like the most under appreciated New York athlete of my lifetime because. Patrick Ewing gave one hundred percent every single night of every game he played in his career in the NBA that's not always the case. Well I would say this. It wasn't just the Games. It was practice as well. When your best player is as committed as Patrick was to winning and we had an incredibly committed group. We felt short but those players led by Patrick all always in my heart consider them champions because they gave every single thing they had. To trying to win a championship unfortunately as Pat Riley often would say some teams are just born at the wrong time We were born in that Jordan narrow and we were great and You know we just didn't have a guy. Go get a shot off the dribble. Alan Houston came later in Patrick's greer. He was that I guy that we had that could go get his own. Own Shot so I will always admire those nick teams. Because literally. No team. Invested. More. To trying to do the right things that let lead to winning a championship than those teams. It was an honor every day in my thirteen years in New York to deal with those players. And those coaches because the commitment level was off. The. Chart. I feel like there's a little bit more of an appreciation as time has gone on. So I just want to get you to say it. So why did you not watch the last dance one second of it where you tempted did you? What was your mindset about that? Well, it wasn't anything you.

Without Kevin Durant, Game 4 is must-win for Warriors

"Talking NBA finals with Chris, Mannix Klay Thompson who missed game three will play game four Kevin Durant whom this the last eight games will not play game. Four Steve Kerr said there's a good chance Katie playing game five or six Klay Thompson spoke about what it would mean if miss the finals entirely. Well, it suck if Kevin can't come back. I mean, I still think we'd have a good chance to win the finals. But obviously. That takes a huge hit. Think it would make us to cut favor anymore without him, you know teams very good. We just love the candor of the Golden State Warriors, like as a team like Klay, whatever. But dream on Jay handed. Steph is usually pretty Cantu. I love that team like is this. Well Kerr's as well, who is the favourite in this series of Katie doesn't return? Oh, it's oh I mean, I still again, we can have different conversation on Monday. If Klay Thompson comes back and looks exactly like the Klay Thompson, we saw before the injury. But if he is significantly slowed it's impossible to look at this series and say Toronto isn't the favorite now we discussed this yesterday. I disagree with Jeff Van Gundy said when he said that this war is team wasn't a playoff team, but it certainly isn't a final team, and it's probably not a team that gets out of the Western Conference as currently constituted so without Kevin Durant. And with a hobble Klay Thompson, Toronto is, is a clear favourite in my eyes. Tonight. What's important is where is clay and not only wears he during the game.

"And now the low has welcome to the low post podcast where we are one day away from the two thousand nineteen NBA finals. And I cannot think of a single better person to preview with than the great Jeff Van Gundy, calling in live from beautiful. Toronto Ontario Canada. How you doing, sir? It will were you good. I'm excited for a new matchup doesn't it feel good devil? Fresh blood. Yeah, it's interesting to like having raptors in it. I think if you're an NBA fan you understand what a great fan base, they have and how fun it was always compete up here. But maybe if you're, you know, just a, a fan you don't understand. You know, just what a great city Toronto is or how well their fan base supports, you know, the Toronto Raptors. So it should be fun. Nuts in the best way possible. It's absolutely. They're, they're, they're insane up there. It's good that the atmosphere is going to be is gonna be incredible, because they look I mean, this is this is the franchise of the purple dinosaur jerseys and Vince Carter bailing and t MAC, not bailing, but sorting ending his era there early in Bosch, failing and Andrea barn Yanni is the number one pace it's been a rough run is all I'm saying and they and like there is a core group of fans there who stuck with them for a long time, and this is going to be this is going to be fun. This is going to be fun. I'm excited. I am works cited I was flying up to Toronto last night, and from Houston where I live, and Tracy McGrady you know, obviously still lives in Houston, and he works on the jump with Rachel and just by happenstance. He's sitting right next to me, and we traded raptor, Knicks stories, the whole way up, and it was. Dawson to see someone you coach, but also early on his career that you competed against, and, you know, he said something about drawn, like, like, it's just favorite city, and I find that amazing for kid from a small town in, in the Orlando area to be drafted to the raptors and fall in love with the city instead of just being homesick think it says a lot about McGrady, but also a lot about Toronto. Give me one good. Knicks raptor story that was reminisced about on this flight. Well, the main one was just how great Carter was and McGrady were from day one, I think Vince Carter because right now and there's always recency bias, you know, we declared guys the greatest who ever played or you know you only remember them for how they are now. You, you see Vince Carter as a guy who came in or who who's in the NBA right now as a role player. Right. I think people if you didn't have to guard him forget, how dominant he was day, one in the NBA like back then when he came in. We didn't double basically anybody and he absolutely tortured us from day one. He made us we played them in his rookie year in the playoffs. We went from not doubling him and him just pummeling us both in the low post jumping over his offense rebounds, the whole bit and very underrated passer to where we doubled him on every possession, every place on the court..

More insight about it as a former teammate Clark faint. God is doing his job. And doing it. The right way doesn't make a medical Tom. It doesn't make him a snitch wanna make some really good analyst. I wish more people were Ryan Clark is my whole point before we get Jeff Van Gundy. I wanna do a couple of minutes on Anthony Davis been told by two league sources that he's not going to play for the pelicans after this year. Okay. That is not actually the newest stuff here. But to keep hearing it from the people that I'm hearing it from just all right? So everybody get ready Davis as he did the other night when asked about his future shot it, down muchly. K G the competent of using the past. He's not going to be that guy. That's gonna rock the vote. He's not going to do the mellow. Get me out of here thing. I don't know if clutch sports Rich Paul those guys do that. That's not really their MO, but they may have to. I don't know if it's going to be a relative, I thought maybe at this point, there'd be a relative that already would be vocal about this and start pushing to get him out of there. I don't you know as its routing. I brought up it's really made that point last time we talked about this like why would you go with clutch? And then tell clutch actually, no, thanks. I don't wanna go to LeBron. And the Lakers. I wanna go to Cairo in Boston the place. You least want me to go. But really this game becomes about. If other teams get involved and say, screw it and give up the assets to the pelicans knowing. Okay. Can we really wait for the Celtics to get out of the kyri contract? So they could trade for him and offer up what we need. So we have another bidder. The pelicans the most important thing to the pelicans now is in offering Anthony Davis two hundred thirty nine million isn't having him ride out next season as well and threatening them with that even though you may be do that if you're dealt empty you're going to get fired anyway. It's about having two bidders. You have to have the second bidder. In of course, you'd want more than that. You can't let this be dictated as strictly a Lakers transition or transactions of us wish said, and if that happens they're going to be even more screw than they already are. But I'm kinda waiting for. I don't know if it will be the dad or somebody else that goes he wants out he needs to get out of here because he's not going to do it. And till he doesn't let's he makes it really difficult in the pelicans kinda kinda ride this whole thing out. But then you gotta worry about the Celtics and those assets, which you'd be looking at after this year's draft, which you know, can get really dicey..

I mean, the windows open Al big deal out of it. I had a guy actually that wanted us to break down the pool stick to Chelsea transport Mun from BBB, but then he was back on loan. How's that work? Well, essentially because they don't wanna lose them because they're in first place in the German league right now. So he's not a starter. But he is you know, he's he plays for them a decent amount. And they don't wanna lose him. They're fighting fire Munich's. Okay. This happens all the time where they're like. Okay. Well, especially with Chelsea Chelsea as forty guys on loan their Rosser ridiculous. But I think it's a good move for like, I do I believe the system in Chelsea.
