"Willing to do to make it work and the level of sacrifice that they're willing to give so that there is successful they would wanna be. If the level of sacrifices high. The results will be good. It may not always look good. There will be some struggles. I'm sure on nights just like goes talking about with the olympic team where they're used to have the ball in their hands morin. It feels funny. Maybe frank asks westbrook to play in different spots on the floor then. He's accustomed to but anthony. Davis to me has always been a sacrificer. Like you know he. He went to l. a. Knowing he was going to take a back seat but still playing this huge role James is a natural giver. Westbrook is you know a one man fast-break which may give them you know some opportunities that maybe they didn't have so maybe they can all carve out their own niche. I think defensively it's gonna be the thing for westbrook and also in the half court. How do they space and give their best players enough room to work with but again if they start from a place that they wanna make it work and they're not resentful of having to sacrifice then they'll figure it out that doesn't mean they're gonna win championship but that means that they're going to be able to play well have enough harmony and chemistry to give themselves a chance to win it. And i think frank vogel is the perfect coach to make it all work. He's as eagles of coach as you would find He is terrific a getting guys to do things that they may not necessarily want to do but must do for the team to win a while taking no credit for so i think you know if their level of sacrifices i they'll be very successful coach. Jeff van gundy congratulations on the olympics in a long run with team usa. I hope you get some sleep. Get reacclimated get some time off before we started doing this again. And we'll talk to you in the preseason. Thank you all right take care..

Los Angeles Lakers Pair LeBron and Russ. Will It Work?

"I wanted to zoom out and go over the big picture landscape with someone who talks on our airwaves every day about the nba. Dhs is favourite league. I think the one. And only the greatest showman in show business and tv for espn stephen smith. Our you sub man. How you doing man glad to finally be here. I'm thrilled to make it happen. You are out in la. So let's start there you talked. I was listening to you on. I take a few days ago. Talking about russell. Westbrook in the amount of pressure that's on russell westbrook. But tell me about you know how. How do you think he fits. Lebron how what are you looking for him. How does he have to changes game or does he have to change his game. Well listen. I think i think both have to modify to some degree. Lebron can't be as ball dominant as as he has been off making all the decisions. Because that's one of the reasons rusting wanna be in houston anymore as you. Well know Because he didn't want to be you know sitting on the sidelines. Playing the role of spectator being on the plane and roller spectator watching james audit. Well that's not gonna change lebron james. He's happy to be back home. He's happy to be la. He's happy to be on a title contender which he is on. We get all of that But in the end he still russell westbrook in you know credit to him. You know like. I told you we've had to be. We've all had to be critical of him at times. What we know that. He's an electrifying talent. The most athletic point guard we've ever seen in nba history. We know he's a walk in triple double and we also know. He never cheat to game with his effort when he's out on a court it's always one hundred percent and so when you look at the slow. Almost snail like pace that the lakers could could. Could you know what wouldn't prone to plan towards playing at at tom's in the past and now you've got somebody like russell westbrook all of a sudden and lebron having a night off. Ad having a night off isn't as daunting as it was the previous two years. I think that helps them during the regular season. And then i think once the postseason comes whatever it takes to win is what i think the character in russell westbrook and lebron james will do.

"To stop pulling up at fifteen or jrue holiday men and trying to always at the roman go in and shoot a layup like an old school late right to the rim and even if you miss even if you missed the offensive. Rebound game comes off dribble penetration. So i'm using my is. Nothing worked through the that. Well i'll tell you what worked in the first game that they stopped doing to try to like get janas more space which is brook. Lopez's took one three in game one and he was in the paint. He was posting with ceiling and he was very effective. They sacrifice that to try to open up the floor engage two three and four and played in back behind the three point line and i wonder if there's a way they can combine both so we agree. Okay before you before you interjected which was totally on point. I was like they need to continue doing jaanus pick and roll screener and just go at blake griffin and you saw in game in game four when it was on hand still the net started switching to try and experiment that but to your point when those guards attack you can see guys starting to pull in. Here's a staff for you game. Four fourteen corner threes for the bucks games. One two three combined seventeen attempts total. So they're starting to get the shots that they that they need. And i think part of that was not just as a screener but they were a little bit more unpredictable and how they did it. They had a decoy action. They had they even tried to get middleton and drew holidays two man game going got a couple of threes out of that they would have to one screen and then on the other side like that's how they have to play. But i completely agree with you. I don't really care my point with bringing up. Those numbers was credited. That's defense but is doing this thing that everybody wants to do use. Janas screener resigned. It hasn't worked and that doesn't mean you should stop doing it. It means you have to investigate. What are the nets doing. Well and what are we not doing well enough. Because janas shooting off dribble threes and akeem olajuwon baseline twenty-foot. Turnarounds is not going to work. That's not going to be a half court offense. That works right agree with you. Like they had more five-man actions five men five-man involvement In game four and again even when they went down. I think it was thirty. Seven twenty four. I thought the quality of their shots was so much better. And that's why You know even from the first play they ran. You know a a decoy action. To drew holiday setting a like a decoy back screen and then came off a hand off and was wide open for the three and a drew holiday. Like i don't know why this happens but it does. Some guys get the the brunt of criticism and others avoided. I don't know why that is. He's got to play better on offense right he's wide open and he could turn the corner and he has an advantage. He's pretty good in the post. You saw the move late and game thirty like he had on the right block yet. Another one the l- asking where he just got right to the rim loves using his left hand to finish like he's got a played better. He was brought there at a substantial cost. I think he is a terrific player. I think he's made him a lot more dangerous in the playoffs but in these last three games if they're going to get it done it's not just going to be because of of janas. I think middleton's playing exceptional. These last two games drew holidays going to have to give them that punch that they need offensively commercial support for this podcast is provided.

twenty-foot thirty blake griffin Janas first game five men janas seventeen attempts two games one screen both One twenty five-man Lopez fifteen akeem olajuwon game one first play Seven

"All right. Take care of coach. Jeff van gundy killing other people money. Stay doing that. I know what. Marge i don't like when people do that. I don't like that coach. You see our quick cutting. I'll come on man people's we'll start turning right and you coached the knicks and the reason why you made a lot of money. He's he's doing on it. I wish i will. I would have been imagine how fascinating would have been object fan. Johnny was the head coach of the houston rockets. And he was dealing with this whole james situa- here's the funny thing. I didn't say. I asked him that he didn't answer it. I get it. I know he doesn't wanna put himself in there. That was the first thing. I asked him. And i understand. Well he's in the media now so he deflects. Let me ask you this though. J you say what if he was a coach. What if he was the coach. What if he was a coach in harden was accepting of it and westbrook was still there and there wasn't any issues and he was accepting the roster. See so what if the both of them were still there. Certain coaches handle situations different. Because they know how to communicate with you fair scenario k. Fair indeed speaking of the nba tip. We're asking this morning. "If you're wondering the rockets over the regular season wednesday against a couple of different teams he's worn jerseys four but it certainly appears as the have said. There's going to be another new jersey of the soon as raphael stone. The team's new. Gm decides what to do. Let's welcome in jeff van gundy. Espn nba analyst on the shell performance. Line jeff. I don't want to ask you. What stephen silas rockets coach should do. I want you to put yourself back in your old life. You're the rockets coach again. This has happened. You dealt with. Patrick ewing you've dealt with superstars at all your stops. This is happening. Your the rockets coach. What do you do. Well it's a tough situation obviously Because you know what you're trying to ask everybody on the team coaches players is to be all in with both feet you know. Be all in and All the players and coaches know that harden is out or wants to be out now that doesn't preclude him from playing well. I think actually that houston is going to win and win Big if hardened stays. I think there'll be a top four seed but i think it's gonna be a hard year because everybody's gonna dance around the elephant in the room. Which is our best player. Doesn't want to be here. When is the other shoe going to drop. So i think stephen silas is handling it just like i think any coach would try. Keep the team on track Prepare as if this is gonna be your team going forward. But even he knows it's just a matter of time until james harden is no longer there interesting coach. Let me ask you this. How much pressure is on your honest. Now that he signed this big deal. Do you seem staying the full length of the five years in milwaukee knowing that other mac superstars have decided to move on from those deals to other teams after they didn't win championships. Yeah i think what is hard now Is to not follow what everybody else does. And you know. Some people have decided. It's best for them in their career to leave and try to team up with people and chase a championship Trying to stack the deck. I think what janas has done is very commendable and very necessary for our league to stay healthy. Is that a small market franchise player of his stature without winning yet with the whole thing has decided to stay and i think he will stay the whole five year. I think he's cut from a different cloth then a lot of guys I don't know why he's different. But i think he is and i think he should be commended for it. What's your expectation for the nets and kevin durant this year hard injury. We all know that. Really hard. And i think people trying to minimize that because of durant's greatness is doing a disservice to durant and what he's going to accomplish overcoming this is. I am so interested in watching kenny. Retain that every night dominance that were used to see or particularly early in the year. Is it up and down because You know that. Achilles injury is basically undefeated as far as you know robbie new of some some of the athleticism that you once had but durant is so ultimately skilled From a shooting ball handling skills standpoint. That i think he can overcome a little bit reduction in athleticism and still be a dominant nba player. Jeff bring me back to this houston scenario since you were so close to being on the verge of being that coach. How toxic could this environment potentially get if they can't find somebody to work the trade with denver. James harden well. I don't know if you know the article that was written yesterday if true is like so different than what. I'm accustomed to as far as dealing with nba players. Now it's not to say that star players have never asked for or received. You know benefits that you know. The twelfth man didn't get. But i think every player who wield power in our league. Yes they they can do certain things. But i think they need to ask themselves. Should they do that. Is it the right thing. Is it the right thing for the teen that selflessness when a star player has selflessness like a steve nash. Attempt duncan or a litany of other players that we've had in our league that set you up for team chemistry and team. Chemistry helps you to elevate your team's game as far as the talent will allow. That doesn't mean you're necessarily going to win a championship but it's going to allow you to maximize the talented hand. Plus it allows you to enjoy the year. And i think we all overlook the fact. We want to work in jobs where were valued where we're excited to go to work. And we're happy and when you have chemistry that's what allows you to do. Conversely the opposite is true. You may win and it may be miserable and that is absolutely zero foot coach. You were talking to coach silas. How would you advise him. I mean he. He's done an exceptionally well. Job this far just in the media with the way he's handled it. But i i. You have to be assured it's only going to get more challenging. How would you advise him to continue to handle this scenario as it develops. Well like you said. I think he's doing a great job because he's referring many of the hardened questions back to harden himself because hard and really is the only one that can answer about his level of commitment About why he did what he did. And i think stephen has done a great great job. You know i. I've fortunate. I know the silence family my first nba job. When i was twenty seven as an assistant for the knicks One of the other assistant coaches was was. Paul silas is debt. Who took me under. His wing taught me a lot about the nba. And so. I've known stephen since he was. I think a high school freshman and he's always been a great dude like he's top notch. If you don't get along with stephen silas you're the jerk and he has put in like twenty years to be an assistant coach and he's got a really good team and he really knows what he's doing and i'm i'm very impressed with not only how.

Mark Jackson is the reason why Mark Jackson isn’t an NBA head coach

"Joe. Lake. Up after mark was let go had a bunch of quotes This was one of them that I found co part of it was that he couldn't get along with anybody else in the organization and look you did a great job. I'll always compliment him mini respects but you. Can't have two hundred people in the organization, not like you. Okay. and he said when I say the organizations whole I don't just mean the team just fifteen players that are involved in the coaching staff I mean everybody there's two hundred employees here. So we look at the organization going forward and the kind of coach we want and not just the performance everything else all these factors matter. We took all of that into account. So we have the player part of it. We have the owner part of it. We knew the front office didn't like him when one of the assistance. was busted for recording Jackson in meetings to play for the front office, which again that actually becomes a pro mark Jackson part of it. The Mark Jackson staff was not good enough the ownership in front office told him repeatedly, the staff is good. Enough Mark said we have the best staff going he and scalping apparently got into it and scalloping he was reassigned the front office didn't like that part of it. So we have the players have the staff we have the ownership we have the front office. Let's also talk about some of the other stuff that's just let's face it. Weird Jackson's Amana Faith I. Don't question anyone's faith. I just say to you leave me alone and I'll do my thing That's the way I've always operated and that rubs people wrong way when he was a head coach but also would find time to get to La whenever he had a convenient off day to go and do that. It's tough to tell a man of faith. Hey, you know what don't be that interested in God? That's that's an almost impossible conversation but if I was at ESPN or anywhere and said, Hey, you know what? I can't watch football this weekend. Because I have this higher calling eventually it worked they'd be like, Hey, you know what? Man Like this is all part of the job being availalbe around is very difficult in tough thing to navigate as I'm not even hundred percent comfortable doing it but I'd have to say employer at the time being frustrated by it actually makes a little bit of sense and I think there's other things that just bumped people out when curry had his ankle issues he was brought up in it was kind of a playful thing curry's brought up they put the holy oil on his ankle and. Jackson's wife at the time and Pete Jackson was like look like he had chronic ankle problems and now he doesn't. So you figure it out. That's one of those things where people like wait what Jackson also had some issues off the core where he was caught up extortion deal and I'm not even really getting on his case for that because I think a lot of things happen to people that are public figures that goes on normal people's lives. But the public figure becomes the of jokes on and on and on. He also said when asked about Jason Collins availability years ago. He said not in my locker room. So it came off as if he was a homophobe because there's evidence that he is, and then when he was asked to clear that up, he said look I know Jas I know his family and I'm praying for them right now. Hey, man you save your fucking prayers. Okay. That's the kind of stuff that just doesn't play no matter who you are and I think the. Most important part of all of this because I guess I'm still maybe a little surprised that he doesn't have a job because other people have been on TV and not been great on. TV. I've looked at other coaches that haven't had great runs and there's been plenty of people that have gotten second chances by the way both black and white. So when I see people out raged that he's been blackballed or as. Shannon Sharpe said White Bald or Kendrick Perkins recently, just saying like all of these things that I just going off on the idea that Mark Jackson doesn't have job it really feels like, okay. Are you informed and but yet you've made up your mind decided not to change your mind or are you uninformed and I think so many people screaming about this or like Oh wait that's right. You know maybe either moments you had just now listening to this like Oh, that's right. I've nothing personal against Mark Jackson. He's one of my favorite college basketball players of all time all-time. You guys know how huge of a Saint John's Fan I am and I actually was you know as a little kid be like dude I can't believe he's going this late in the draft is GonNa be awesome and he was awesome in the knicks I felt so vindicated I was. Like and I could refer team right one day I love Mark Jackson and I was right. But when I listened to him on the broadcast Van Gundy I, think him being on the broadcast Van Gundy chances of getting a job because if I was worth a half a billion dollars or more and had the opportunity to own a team or owned a team right now and I'd go. Van Gundy's on all of these little things like, Hey, look at how they blind me Anthony Davis on free throws already have them on the other side of the court. So he can seal for Deepak smaller offender will there be an adjustment. Hey, what's going on with the substitution? Hey, this rule's actually wrong. Why are they doing it? This Way Jeff Van Gundy will say, here's Hey Jason tatum something's wrong with him. He's the first pointed out it happens multiple times every single broadcast Jeff Van Gundy is easily the best NBA analyst in the game right now. Mark doesn't do any of those things and I. Don't know if that's just him not being comfortable in that role but he's a coach. He's a former player and he doesn't do any of those things. He'll say, Hey, this guy's not just a great score. He's a great individual. He's a human being. Okay. So and so doesn't get enough credit for shooting. Okay. In everything is results based. If the shot goes in, it was a great shot at the shot doesn't go in Hey, that's the guy that shouldn't be taking the shot. It's very. It's very minimal depth and when. You have people that make these decisions. You're almost instead of looking at the resume in Golden State which is on its surface again resume. You'd say Yeah. What like six years? Nicholas gives Scott his shot young team garnered play defense that's hard to do. But I think being next to Jeff. When Jeff runs circles around him on the broadcast. It it might remind go wait why why is this one guy way better talking about the game than the other guy so I think the best thing market do would not be on the broadcast with Jeff and who knows what might happen. So I just think the more we look at it and hey man trust me this is not white guy decide to push back on racism segment because I've. Probably done with those the rest of my life. I'm seeing specific to this one because the NCAA numbers are atrocious. The ABC's the head coaching. Diversity that we have in the pro sports leagues still is not what it needs to be I'm not pushing back on any of those things. But when it comes specific to mark Jackson, there are the informed in the uninformed, and hopefully if you've resisted this, you're more informed now.

Game 5 wraps up of the 2020 Finals

"Moments after exciting. One of the best, finals games in recent memory. Game Five Heat Eke Ekit out to live another day and joining Zach tonight now Chris. Bosh. It wasn't quite. Five to Allen for three. It was quite Bosch Talon. But this is up there with one of the biggest heat wins in history I mean. For sure. It's an incredible game. What did you think of it? Man You know I, it is starting to be one of those series that's just kind of grinding to a halt. You thought that was going to happen is not happening. Everything, every player that she thought was going give this particular stat line is not it's not really transpiring right now but I mean, you have to give all credit to the heat and I kept telling people this in all these interviews you know how can get? The Lakers. Over they've got the uniforms on and I just like, okay he don't WanNa be here but let me tell you something. These guys if there's anybody. Who would embrace a difficult situation? It is Erik Spoelstra and Butler seems to really. Thrive off of that and anticipate that. affected. So it's Kinda like a marker will really hard is. Like they say, Oh hey yeah, we're here now. We're supposed to be competing for championship. This is how it's supposed to be. You know is this all about survival now there they've lived to play another day and that's what you gotta do. I think it's time to just acknowledged. Once and for all that, the heat had become a great team you know there was always this question of. Did they benefit from the hiatus hiatus in everything the bubble shake the bucks more than other teams. Did they benefit from hayward getting injured a really good. You. Know this Lakers seem his lost one game in every playoff series. Until now, they have not lost to to a heat team that is missing its leading postseason score until this series Goran dragic that they could started to acknowledge Jimmy Butler. The top ten player. Yeah that'd be we're. GonNa. Have to rearrange the rankings because this dude just put up thirty five, twelve eleven in forty seven minutes forty seven minutes and five and a half whatever it is it's the game you play dull game. Survived forty thirteen seven on fifteen of twenty-one masterpiece from the Brian. James we can talk about the end of the game if you want. Everyone can focus on the end of the game, but the heat put themselves in position to win at the end of the game. Duncan. Robinson was unbelievable. They're shotmaking was outstanding and this team just keeps in with Bam out bio clearly, not one hundred percent missing layups, missing dunks, he can play better he. To acknowledge the heat now are are for real and just like you were saying, they're short handed to. So you know we need to keep that in mind You can only imagine how the series would be a little different Gora was out there and not that he's just going to be that dominating presence, but he gives them another layer. To their attack and you know they have that team cohesion down pack and I mean, I don't really know where the lapses with the Lakers are happening with dunkin' Robinson. He's making them pay every time. I. Mean He's moving himself up into Lee Company every game because you don't expect them the thing you know you don't think he's going to continue to go on the street. He's he's gone on and you'll eventually figure that a veteran is GonNa get into them and just chase him to the bathroom. But but it hasn't happened yet and I mean they're making them pay every single time and. Boy I. Tell You. We'll. We'll see what happens game six. Years especially with a hobbled a little bit man. That's one of the big cities we should probably get to. Well, let's let's talk about the end of the game real quick. Okay. So a Frank Vogel Lakers coach has come out after this game and said that there were bad calls at the end. Jimmy Butler getting to the line I'm going to have to go ahead and disagree he's probably GonNa give find. Lakers lead the Lakers up one. He, ball they run a beautiful fast play for Jimmy Butler gets A. He screwed good play Lebron not. because. Eighty one moving so whilst I foot Lebron on. Screen Lebron and she goes up but Jeff Van Gundy called on the broadcast he he floats see I mean. It in verticality your whole. Career. Frank Vogel helped invent it with Roy but. He floats. He fails right? That's a foul. Yes. Afoul he jumped into them. You know good call by the resident and you have to give you know usually referees are getting tough time I. Think they called a Great Game Day You can always look on both sides and say, well, if an if but if they're even in the game is tied and the players they're the ones who are dictating what happens out there. Hopefully, the game isn't called. You know at the end by you know free throws or anything like that but all. Evenly called Game I. Feel. Throws. Yeah, each team had their opportunities and. Jimmy Man Jimmy Butler man he's he's continuing to do it. Man I gotta I gotta you gotTa give him props he's going to make give him props I. Mean he put them on their own is back in those last minutes. Man I mean, the one leg get he's hidden one legged fadeaway. You know he's hitting the free throws down the stretch to dribble I mean he's He's shoot free throws when you're that exhausted and not just. Did you her second he was going to miss you like just. To, to, of course, you were not you think he's GonNa Miss One because as a player I know how I would feel I'm GonNa Miss One. On. THAT TIRED Like him going over when he was leaned over panting after getting fouled, you know they burned a time out after that but. Just him just still being able to muster up whatever could and having a concentration suppose still had Chris Bosh on his roster. He would have run that play where you went to the back side. And the coroner. You. Come on you. Play for last second shot several times. So okay. So it makes a two free throws come down. They call time out again, Van Gundy and Mark Jackson. Call on this game all over this. Danny Green is in the game with a know Dunkin Robinson's on Danny Green. They know that they're going to run the screen to try to force Dunkin Robinson they know there's going to be a double with Lebron that's exactly what happens Lebron Drives Zach he drives into a crowd. There's three is three and a half guys there. He makes the basketball play Chris Bosh, which he is made for fifteen years since he's been starting to the playoffs, throws it to the Open Guy Danny. Green is a thirty eight percent three point shooter from that spot according to second spectrum is wide open. So I'll I'll throw them another couple of percentage points. And he missed it. Well I know Danny wants that one back. you know he made the right play it was a crowd I. I think he had the mentality to say, you're not going to beat us. We're sending everything in the kitchen saying and we're just going to close the shooters. They got the play that they were looking for. It was a tremendous play Danny Green slipped out. You kinda tell that the heat we're anticipating that play. Brahms. So able to make a very decent pass out the Danny grains got he got his hands on he stepped right into it. Any other time nine times out of ten he'll make that shot. You know he missed it what the interesting thing was on the rebound market Moore's he had plenty of time and he kind of made a quick decision Brian, opened on the right wing, which is always easy to say a new usually. Yeah. You throw it to ad but he had another big on you know and that was just man I was a tough light. It was very tough sequence. Watching film you. In it again now. You. Know Marquee Foucault Danny Green like he just handed the ball to hand off again Danny was right there funny though when he's when you through the LOB. Through. It I looked under the Rim I saw a d. and I thought again the balls just hand in mid Air I thought okay. I hate that decision because ad Mike, I'm putting the referees in play a little bit their down one, and then of course, the pass was that not an accurate he choked right let's just say. I'm not saying I would say that to mark keeps face in this moment. Do not say that Bryant don't say that. He. What do you WanNa say it's choked. Well he also as you pointed out before we started, you know they were setting the screen it they set for Jimmy on the on the go ahead. Free throws a flat screen by crowder and the flat screen is designed. You know Chris knows when your face in half court, it's designed to make defense. Gessler. Like which way to go, but it is an which wishing the pick he went he went from an angle to switching to the flat. kind of this weird in between space and if you don't, if if you're not demonstrative about your coverage, you'll get exploited

I Disagree with the Second Agreement and I Hope You Take It Personally by TK Coleman

"I disagree with the Second Agreement and I hope you take it personally by tk Coleman of tk. Coleman DOT COM. I like to think in terms of alternatives not absolutes that is instead of adopting an either or logic for problem solving and goal achievement prefer to think in accordance with both and strategies. For example, let's consider the notion of taking things personally self help author. Don Miguel Ruiz has done a magnificent job at popularizing and articulating what is often referred to as the second agreement. Here's a summary of the idea in Ruis. His own words quote whatever happens around you don't take it personally nothing other people do is because of you what is because of themselves all people live in their own dream in their own mind. They are a completely different world from the one we live in only take something personally we make the assumption that they know what is in our world and we try to impose our world on their world and quote. I think that's a very useful idea and I found myself in some pretty lengthy discussions where I've defended it to people who absolutely to test this concept teaches own. I suppose. But as for me, my life has been a heck of a lot easier since I started practicing the second agreement as a critical thinker however, I like to keep my options open. Rather. Than treating ideas like the second agreement as dogmas to be believed in a regard them as value neutral conceptual tools whose usefulness varies with context. Sometimes I like taking things personally even when I know I'm not being personally attacked I deliberately choose to act as if I am being conspired against I usually use this idea as a psychological trick for motivating myself. As long as I can employ the take it personally technique in a way that's healthy and isn't obsessive. I derive great practical value from it. Anyone who's ever played competitive spores probably understands concept very well choosing to look at your competition as the enemy or the bad guys can be an invigorating experience. One of my favorite ticket personally stories comes from Michael Jordan before a soldout contest between the New York Knicks and their rivals the Chicago Bulls Knicks, coach Jeff Van Gundy accused Michael Jordan of being a con man who deliberately X. friendly towards opposing players in order to soften them up and gain a competitive edge over them. Van. Gundy's harsh words were printed in Chicago newspaper and Jordan. saw them before the game. He took it personally and decided to play with a chip on his shoulder for the entire game Jordan had a personal vendetta to show van Gundy just how capable he was having a great game without being nice to his opponents. He did exactly what he set out to do by scorching the Knicks for a red hot one points and one point in the game after hitting an important basket Sharon looked at Van Gundy and yelled at him. One of Jordan's team as reported that Michael Love to us, criticism and hatred as a way of motivating himself a sports commentator who knew of this habit predicted that Jordan would score fiftypoints simply because he would be fired up. I've Angolans words. US, right. Jordan took it personally and brought the best out of him interestingly enough. Here's what Jordan said after the game quote. Guess I. Didn't make any friends out there tonight Jordan smiles I. Think those words were more geared to motivating his players but I don't think on the court they have befriended me, I don't go on the court expecting to make friends. But when I leave the court, I don't take what happened on the court away from me. We're only playing a game. I don't view it as a war away from the game and quote. In a video clip. Jordan talks about how he used that moment as motivation while not letting it get to him in an unhealthy way. Jordan disagreed with the second agreement and it worked does illustrates one of my favorite metaphors for life life a game. As an all games achieving one's goals requires the use of effective strategies. A good strategist is one who remains flexible. He uses what works without ever feeling the need to assign the status of costal truth to any of the strategies in his playbook. If taking it personally works good strategists takes it personally if taking it personally leads to stress and self destructive preoccupation with what others think then it strategist stops to him personally. This attitude of philosophical flexibility can be extended to issues and belief systems. Ideas are just tools sometimes are useful. Sometimes are not which ideas of you when you use them, and how you react to the results is your job to sort out as you sorting through the ever enlarging buffet of ideas being offered in the marketplace be should remember the admonition of Terence McKenna quote nobody smarter than you and quote. You know more about what's best for you than anyone else. So don't take anybody's ideas dogmatically specially now mind think critically about everything. Then take what works for you and leave the rest.

"Howard and I guess crowder probably Davis I'd I'd start with crowder on Davis but I'm not going to let. Anthony Davis play, against single coverage. Ever. Like parameter he dribbles it were coming host. He dribbles it were common like I just. They're they're limited in their half court offense and they've gotten some good responses like rondos played I think. You very very well, and they've gotten timely performances by a lot of guys. But at the end of the day, they need James and Davis to score and I'M GONNA TRY TO TAKE DAVIS OUT AND IF I End Up losing a game or two by the three, so be it but I'm not going to lose because. Aligns me up and he scores over the top if your methodology of gave us out at least star Games as. crowder plus help not Bam Bam goes on dry because I need to I need to play big minutes and and be you know that that means staying out of foul trouble and I just think they're size. You Know Dwight Howard was emboldened at some points against Yokich is lack of physicality and. You just can't get pumped by that. Overwhelming strength not that crowder would but it's just to me it's the size differential You know there's GonNa be some help. There's GonNa be a lot of help on. You know when James is attacking or playing pick and roll. You gotTa have a fighting chance on the backboard. I served a lot of coaches about this and it was probably fifty fifty but I actually agree with you I think as sexy as the Vami Anthony Davis matchup is I think when the Lakers are big in particularly to start games, I'm starting crowder on Davis and Bama Dwight and you hit on two reasons number one. Offensive rebounding scares me with the Lakers, the best offensive rebounding team in the League in I just as crappy a free throw shooter is Dwight is he's GonNa draw fouls, GONNA get second chances they're gonNA turn second chance points into threes are gonNA. Get into bonus early have six six Jay crowder on him. The other thing is crowder's kind of a nasty. He has like that low base nasty temperament that can annoy a guy like Anthony Davis in the postseason confronting, and the third thing is you nailed it in a lot of coaches brought this up I can't risk Bam getting too early fouls can't risk foul trouble on him. I'm going to need them at the end of games. He's obviously GONNA GUARD AD. When these playing center that's easy. So I think. You know I don't know what's going to do but I I would guess he leans this way rabbi. On the game tips off. I think so and I think You know just the way the game moves in transition. Now, they'll be opportunities or moments where out of bio was guarding Davis and crowder somehow or Butler somehow find his way to Howard in you know in a transition cross-match. Situation. But I do think you know that crowder will play them and? I think Miami. You Know Front they've. They've They'd probably front as much as anybody and then you know their place in zone although I think the offensive rebounding Zone of we incredibly important component of if there's zone is. Successful because you know it's their first shot defense against his own is very good against the Lakers it's just. That's the second shot defense against coming out of the zone. It'll be a little bit problematic I would suspect. Austin an you're nailing on the broadcast. Boston solved zone by the end of that series I think even some of their misses in the fourth quarter were pretty good shots. Even some of their twos I thought were good shots. Can Can the Lakers replicate of what Boston did do they have other methods of beating the zone? Like what did they see in that series that they can do because everyone is going to say well, zones GonNa work against the Lakers because the Lakers are a mediocre point shooting team their ideal for that's ideal for the heat zone. How do you see them counting? I thought what Boston and Brad Stevens did so well was they started really screen zone they screened it early and possessions on in pick and roll situations. They screened it early with flair screens which widened out the two forwards top of the zone which opened up the middle for cleaner looks into the middle and I think the Lakers won't play with as much movement because I don't think they. They either want to or can't play with that type of movement, but I think to have two huge targets in the middle like to me. If. You get the ball into the middle to James or Davis. By. Bam Outta bio is going to have to. Come up in that opens up the back line for lobs if they're playing big and you know. caldwell-pope is a capable shooter, the Danny Green's capable shooter so I think. If they can get that ball to the middle to one of their two playmakers. They're GONNA do fine against a zone and it'll be interesting to see. How much Miami does zone and I, just it's GonNa be fascinating because I'm fascinated by how eric has combined old school heat mentality defensively with new wave Eric Spoil Tra Spoelstra, Sterlite A. Zen Zone. I. I find it. Fascinating. I I. Love when they go zone just because like a it's just fun. It's just it's a different game I get I get ten possessions games, totally different. I get to look at how Kay how're you going to attack on and they changed the way they're a zone looks here and there it's just fun to have a little a little variety but you didn't something else that you brought up I. Think. The LOB threat of both white and Davis Nemanja jail. I think that's a big deal like Thais did not have that Tyson needs to Tyson like six eighty needs to jump go down, gather the ball, and by that time their arms all around you dwight and ideas go up and dunk. I thought actually though Thais played really well against zone the last couple of games they all did I thought and I agree with you, they had some makeable shots, their their issue was they couldn't get Boston couldn't get the stops that they needed. When they went up ninety, six, ninety, I thought when they did that they were wresting control of the game and I give Miami so much credit how they just responded and really just shredded Boston from that going on but you're right the lob threat to Howard. And to really like you mentioned Andrew Magee regardless of WHO's playing center if they have someone behind the defense along the baseline, the way that they commit up with their back line somewhat like Syracuse. Does in their zone. That middle is open. Now, a lot of teams in college they don't care if you throw it in the middle, they're going to say, Hey, make that shot it's it's fine. We don't believe you have the skill to beat us with that shot. In the NBA when that balls being thrown Davis and to James in that open space to either shoot attack pass I just think it's a totally different. Equation. Yeah I mean you know the Bryce Lebron like to pass shoot or drive that guy gets one half step he's in he's at the basket. That's the other thing that's interesting about what to do with Bam on defense in this series as they he are. You look at the numbers anyway they he if you can get to the rim against Miami, they allow a pretty high percentage in the restricted area and the Lakers live at the basket. The premier attacking team in the League Lebron shooting like eighty percent at the rim in the play offs or something. Crazy. I if Bam is. If Obama's on a D.. Yeah. He can help at the rim but eighty spots up a lot when they have their big lineup in it's allow Lebron Dwight pick and roll with ad spotting up if he's on Dwight. He's either switching onto Lebron which is going to be the most on battleground of the series. I think like Lebron gets rim against Bam Miami's trouble or he's on Dwight and he's near the basket. I want I think I want him near the basket just just because I need a last line of defense back there that's bigger than Jae crowder because of its Jae crowder Jimmy Butler whoever like they're just gonNa live at the rim. Well I think it speaks to number one. You can't turn it over against L., A. Because they're such a great quick strike team in transition. That's how they live at the rim to. The. Players reluctance to.

APP Apple podcasts or wherever you find your favorite shows. Charles Barkley was trending last night. Prior to the Blazers Lakers game on inside the NBA Sir Charles had this to say if the Portland Trail Blazers win tonight they're going to sweep the Lakers all. They. All had a good chuckle with that, and then the blazers go out and pick up the Victory Jeff Van Gundy on the call for ESPN ABC and Reaction, when you heard the Charles said if the Blazers win last night, they'll sweep the Lakers. Interestingly. I had said just the opposite the day before on a show. That I thought that the Lakers had a better opportunity of sweeping the Blazers in the blazers had of winning the series. And last night You know Portland shut under forty percent from the floor and they still won and so I gotta give them a lot of credit I think they were hardened. You know. Because they had to win so many games. And just like Milwaukee, you know at the end of one. The Lakers were down double digit than so they were playing from behind the whole night. Yeah and they've been doing that every single game in the bubble if I didn't watch the game last night, how would you sum up why the Lakers lost? Awful. Shooting. Five thirty two from three terrible from the free throw line Lebron, Anthony Davis where combined sixteen for twenty four and then Lebron and Anthony Davis who have to absolutely carry them offensively Davis was eight for twenty four. Lebron was nine for twenty. So you know it was a sub-standard night offensively all the way around they didn't turn it over. They played really hard. They were up on the backboard but their offense of skill is very limited. James and Davis have to be great. Yeah I think Anthony Davis not in a night out though coach has got to be the best player on the floor and these are the first real important games of his career and I don't know if you ease into the playoffs it felt like he lets the action sometimes come to him. He needs to be more aggressive and I don't know how Lebron can facilitate that. Can you change somebody's personality because it might just be Anthony Davis Personality I don't think you ever change somebody's personality, but you can and. Help them to reach whatever maximum level of intensity they can't you know la all year has been dynamic in transition and Davis got a couple and transition last night. But they've struggled in half court there. They just don't have a lot of weapons when you think about it, who else is going to be able to create a shot Other than. James or service without Rondo Avery. Bradley every day Miss, his defense and off the ball cutting and movement I'm interested to see. Do. They put in somebody like waiters to try to have another guy who can go off the dribble he only played a minute last night. So I, I'm just interested they're starting unit. It just doesn't. They didn't play well and they haven't played well ostensibly in the half court. Talking to Jeff Van Gundy ESPN ABC analyst. He'll be on the call on Thursday, Oklahoma City and the rockets, and then it'll be the Lakers and blazers. If I'm Portland, what do I want the Lakers? What am I forcing or trying to get the Lakers to do I think what you WANNA do is. Make, sure you. You do a better job of keeping Anthony Davis off the line. And I would double him on every low post or mid post catch and make that ball go to the Lakers and see if they have enough offense on the weak side and I think if the Lakers are able to get through this series, I, have no doubts that they're going to. Every team that plays them is going to try to test the Lakers to see if they have enough offense in the half court and. If you don't get the Lakers transition, if you're Terry starts, right we turn the ball over sixteen times and that led to some breakouts. But if we can just keep them in the half court, make him shoot it up over the top they won't shoot five for thirty, two three, but do they have enough? And then Portland I didn't know I thought they might be on fumes adrenaline and you've coached against teams with teams that they just seem to be relying on something internally in Portland still has that last night and I also thought the big man. Proved to be a pretty big difference for that team when I didn't think whiteside, you know who doesn't play that much. But then they relied on last night you you just got a nice teen contribution. and. That's a team. That's a better all around overall top to bottom team than the Lakers are. The you know winning the play in game on the first night. gave them that extra day off. So that they had two days off in between Games To plan and to recharge and the thing I think Terry Stotts team you know none of those guys had a big night last night and none of them. No one shot while they won shooting under forty percent but they got to the free throw line like you said, they got some timely contributions whiteside nurses shouldn't have a particularly big night but I thought you know he did some good things Lillard the bomb obviously was an incredible shot but they can if I'm Terry Stotts I'm saying play a lot better and we're gonNA need to play better because certainly the Lakers aren't going to shoot like that I just thought they. Were more ready and when you know Doug Collins used to always say the NBA is not a fourth quarter league. It's a first quarter league and.

"Winning we don't know I'm just saying if that happens, you know what I didn't want Zach with all due apologies to Al Horford and his family who are on twitter. I didn't need more Al Horford in my sixers viewing experience as we proceeded with these weeks and months of American desperation. "Are we willing to make changes to our own behavior as human beings that prevent the spread of this virus? One thing that I've been so frustrated by to zoom out even more a little bit. Bit, is this whole idea of being a symptomatic, right. So initially in Zach. You remember this from from our area in New York like when this first happened in February march being a symptomatic was the story, it was the nightmare and it was a nightmare because you could be seemingly fine on the outside, which would be spreading this virus everywhere. The concern, I. Think. A lot of epidemiologists have including the ones that you talk to. They're concerned that people see being a symptomatic as a win because actually you're not suffering from this thing, you're not outwardly suffering. Now. There are questions about the long-term effects to begin with, but that's actually the nightmare, the nightmares that in a non bubble environment, you take that and you spread it around, and that's the whole reason. This virus is so incredibly difficult to contain, and that's why it's a pandemic. So anything that contributes to our delusion around how easy it is to live with this thing is a problem I will admit and honestly. I'm out in the BURBS, right? Now? ZAC. It's so startling, right? The other big part of the story is if you don't feel this in your own life, if you don't feel those pain points whether it's the lack of sports or people in your life who are. Contracted this virus. It's kind of surreal. How much you can ignore it. Right? If you're just out by yourself in a house and you're not seeing anybody and you're not reminded by this in ways that affect your comfort zone. I think there is the risk of backsliding, and so I understand the urgency from anybody whose job it is to contain this. I mean, how many stories have we read all over the country of like Oh people had a party here and five days later, there was an outbreak, but over here, it's like it's it's it's the same thing over and over again, and it's just like. At some point. Yeah. I grasp at straws to when it comes to solutions. But the bottom line is the NBA has has crafted something that works for what it set out to be Yossi. Deserve. A huge amount of credit There was about forty eight hours of grumbling from people about the food they're that grumbling has ceased and you you are hard pressed to find anyone who will say anything other than the NBA has done an amazing job life here is pretty good. Yeah. They're like I'm getting a little bored I'm sick of being in Orlando at rains for fifteen minutes every day that can be annoying a, but like the claim is kind of. Of Universal and the NBA rightfully. So is not going to take a victory lap because they know they are one case away from the whole thing coming down, and that's why Lou, Williams goes out and it's ten days. That's it. That's why Alex Caruso, your go to your sister's wedding. It might be ten days might be twelve days. We would take no chances with any of this. Yeah, and when I was talking to people around the League, Zach before the bubble officially started, they were most worried about this specific time they were worried about the pre playoff games. Because right now, you have the biggest pool of players, the players who maybe not as invested. In the process as the other guys who are in this for the long haul and the thought has always been when the playoffs start, you will feel a level of intensity that is reminiscent of the postseason. Were guys will all take it seriously, but if they can get through this phase right now, this phase was the one they were most worried about, give me a, who've you what? What have? Have you been most interested in who have you been watching the most? Who Have you been sort of curious to see how they play or what what story lines have been interested in. I'm still all in on these rockets, I cannot stand I I was. So I have an apple TV and I couldn't figure out how to get the feed of the rockets bucks game. So I ended up watching Watching, when of those weird cameras that was just on James Harden the entire time, and I can't. This is where I'm like Jeff Van Gundy. I can't figure out the tech support on this. So I just watched him. It was fascinating I. mean the Guy Pads around like a soccer player. He reminds me of Leo Messi like the way you can serves as energy. He'll like walk around in basically. Basically a bathrobe and slippers conserving himself. Then these incredible bursts that remind you that he is he is historically historically special kind of a player, but the bigger picture, there's act like Russell Westbrook still is disciplined. He's bought in, he came into the bubble. The same discipline he had before this all stop. He's only taken a couple of threes a game. He's been excellent. The Super Small lineup is working. And hilariously like they're sharing tips with the nets at the pool, at the grand, Floridian in terms of how to beat the Rock, mean how to beat the bucks like that entire wh- everything that's happening with the Houston Rockets to me is so delightful well, and they haven't Eric Gordon yet for a game that matters in like that's that's the lineup. That's GonNa Close Games for them is, is there, but with Gordon although Daniel House. Dennehy House has been pretty good, and like now can do stuff off the dribble for them that he wasn't doing when he first got there like he's been pretty good. They are in three bowl games, sixteenth defense I. Mean. That's going to be the bellwether. I, do think they're the most exciting. Although I'll tell you I was going to say they're the most exciting of the three to six teams that are all bunched up together I'll tell you this the Michael Porter Jr... Is really really exciting. Because over. Denver's a really good team. And they obviously have transcendent all-time player in Yokich. And the supporting guys around him. Just. You got to the end of the season and you're like. They're just not any better than last year as a team like they're just kind of they just didn't have. There was a certain. Juice that was just missing to certain lake whether it was an athletics ISM or an unpredictability or just like Gary Harris was making shots all year until the riot. If Michael Porter Jr. can give them some juice and and now like not only is he in the rotation like Michael on has no choice on that? He might I. Mean. There's an argument that he should start now even when they're healthy. So they've become very exciting to, but I'm with the Houston. With nuggets. Questions. act. Because I love my cousins because Michael Porter, Jr. beyond.

How to Help Children Make Decisions

"I had a dream that I printed out a manuscript. I was working on and it fell from the printer like soup so I grabbed a little Japanese bold. Catch it with and it took a sip without thinking and then I worried because I wasn't sure which Chapter Eight. It was a dream of course but still woke up feeling like. I had done something wrong like I was missing something important but I didn't know where to go to find it. A mentor told me wants to pay attention to my dreams. It wasn't because every single element in my dreams had some kind of hidden meaning but the emotion that lingers when we wake up will that can be an important source of information. That's the power of our imagination. A thing may not have happened but that doesn't mean it wasn't real on a cross country flight a few weeks ago. I watched the movie version of a book that I read a few years back it was. Where'd you go? Bernadette if you must know but I enjoyed the movie which is saying something because typically when I watch a movie version of a Book I've read. I'm fairly disappointed this time though. I've found myself watching it and just enjoying it without much judgment now. Many factors were at play here in my experience. In general I like movies better on airplanes due to the watching a movie in the clouds factor. That's just cool and also it's been years since I read the book so the details had faded enough that I knew I liked it but I couldn't tell you exactly what they got wrong or left out in the movie typically with movies that started out his books. Well it's hard to please the readers. The filmmakers have so many limitations with time and money technology not to mention their own interpretation of the author's intent but when we read the book imagination as limitless if the author does it give details. We just fill them in ourselves. Our nation's powerful the only limit to my imagination is that I cannot put myself in your head. I'm stuck inside my own head. I don't know what you're thinking unless you tell me and even then I only hear it through the filter of my own experience. Well that's true between you and me and it's true between us and our children so when my daughter was an elementary school and she told me she was afraid of what her friends would think of her new haircut. I dismissed her imagination too soon. Oh my gosh. They're gonNA love it. I said they probably would. That's true but they may not love it so then. The picture that she was holding onto in her mind wasn't necessarily an unreasonable one. She was lost in her own imaginary world saying her friends laughing and pointing an offering only heavy rejection in her head. They'd hurt even though it hadn't happened yet even though it probably wouldn't happen at all but I'm no help to her when I say that won't happen. Don't worry about it. I'm learning to practice expanding my own imaginary world to include the imagination of my children. I started to learn this back when they were a little bit younger. But I'm finding it still applies. Even as they grow the goal is to enter into that painful place with her to walk alongside her into the dark alley of her mind to confront the fear lurking in pretend corners and not to tell her. There's nothing to fear but to give her the tools to handle what might come next. This is an important practice in all aspects of parenting but especially when it comes to helping our kids make decisions the next time your child comes to you with a particular fear or maybe a potential uncomfortable outcome or maybe needing help and making a decision rather than launching immediately into lecture. Fix or tell mode here are four things you can do instead to help. Your child begin to develop their own habit of soulful decision making number one. Ask At least two questions. I've come to believe more and more. That listening is the opposite of loneliness or at least being listened to imagine if someone was willing to listen to you in your lonely places and really hear you out. You may not feel so lonely anymore. Part of the fear of negative outcomes are kids half is they're afraid of the burden of being alone in their rejection alone in that new adventure or alone in their decision. Making if your child is stuck in fear or doesn't know what to do next pause and ask a question not a leading question or a statement disguised as a question. You don't. I'm talking about but a true curious question that seeks to know and understand episode ninety. Four of the next right thing is all about the importance of asking the second question and with children. It's equally important. I know where the parents and sometimes it seems like. We're supposed to have all the answers and so our first instinct is not to ask but to tell but instead if your child is struggling with fear frustration or a decision before you tell them anything. Try asking them a question and then challenge yourself to ask at least one. More Question. Look for clues to her hesitation. Find out the images. She's holding on to follow the trail to her heart number to kneel to understand their world before asking them to rise to understand yours years ago. I read a book by Wess Stafford. That forever changed how I see children. The book is called too small to ignore and in it. West says this. He writes so far as we see in reading the Gospels. Jesus never admonished children to become more grown up. He did however exhort grownups to become more like children. This begs the question. What does it mean to be like little children? The best way to know is to ask the children themselves. What imaginary outcomes might they be anticipating? What is he afraid will happen? What sounds fun. What sounds scary. What clues will she offer you about the shape of her soul number three offer next right thing solutions if your son needs to decide between taking an art class or taking a music class in third grade keep the third grade perspective what matters in third grade learning yes but also friends predictability safety curiosity fun resist? The urge to insist third grade decision have highschool consequences. Let it be a third grade decision but at the same time when offering an x ray thing solution keep in mind. That third grade is the oldest. Your child has ever been in fact no matter the age of your child the age he or she is now is their oldest one no matter if she's three or ten or sixteen that's why they always feel like they're so grown up is because they are in their own minds to her this is the biggest and potentially most consequential decision. She's yet had to make the resist the urge to downplay it. Just because it's only third grade. After all as the parents we get to share these moments for our kids we could to help shape them anyway both by respecting them for what they are and by not making them something. They're not and if a child has no idea what she wants to do. Maybe take what you've learned and ask her. What is just the next right thing she can do today? It might have nothing to do. With the decision it might go for a bike rider. Eat a snack do her homework or play in her room. Keep her in the moment as much as you can and do your best to stay there with. Her will finally number four. Remember your job. There's a difference between God's job our job in his book families were grace is in place. Jeff Van Vondran says quote. God's job is to fix and change. Our job is to depend serve and equip this is the work of grace and it is more restful than you can imagine speaking for. Myself Now. I wonder what would happen. If in our family we would dare apparent from a place of love rather than from a place of fear I do know a little bit about what it could look like. I want to know even more and so I need God and all of this not just to do the parts that I'm not good at not just a pick me up when I begin to feel weak but I need the kind of God who takes up residence inside me to parent with me in me as me as I trust him. Good thing. That's the kind of God. He is so that haircut conversation might sound to my grownup. Mind Small and unimportant but when you're in third grade that is your whole world and actually now that I think about it. I've had some pretty important haircut conversations in my adult world too. I WANNA be willing to walk into the imagination of my child and face her biggest fears with her and I know our friend. Jesus is willing to walk into my imagination with me in face my fears with me too. He doesn't dismiss me and say that's never going to happen. He says he will be with me even if it does happen.

"Steig. Good Day. Welcome my friends to the storyteller where you'll find first nations people from across native North America who are following Jesus Christ without reservation today. We'll hear more from Jeff van every and upper key. Yuga from the six nations as he shares. How thankful he is that God saved him and turned his life around. When I went to alter I said okay. Let's let's do it. I believe I believe you're GonNa do that for me. And and to accept it together me and my wife together to alter his is China is kind of about rare. We got saved together because we both realized we both realized the mistakes that we made in that. We need to do this together. We need to do. And that's where it starts when you realize and you feel it in your heart and you're getting no strings pulp and you say wow. This is what I'm going to do because I believe I thought I believe in all this other stuff while look got me. You know the benefit to a of going to the altar and standing there before Christ standing there knowing that you are standing before the creator vomit can of heaven and earth and saying. Listen I believe in you. I'm GONNA follow you. I understand that you you guide you were buried in the third day you were raised. And that's what I stained by was a life changing experience because I remember standing there with her and Just feeling just feeling totally relieved and tears coming down my mic. Cheech and tears were flowing down her cheeks and after that it was it was just somethin'. Guide is forgiven. Me and and this is what it means to me the difference between Heaven and Hell because the things that I was doing I was heading straight for hell but now the things that I do. I know I'm still going to heaven. I'm still I'm still on my way and I'm GonNa make mistakes. And when people come to mandate Lower Tinker what you're doing you think you`re. I remember when you were out. That's fine. That's fine. They used to bother me at the beginning. But it doesn't bother manny more but I tell them look what Jesus did for me. Look what he'll do for you and God told me that he says you know it's not you that they hate it's me it's in you so you're going to he says you're GONNA be persecuted for my namesake because of who you serve. We still still continue to go to church and restore I started reading their bibles together and praying together. He's out things that we we never experienced because we never knew 'cause her background was You know you go to church. And her parents basically left it up to them to go to church and you went to Church on Holidays Easter Christmas or things along that line but You know after that things just started to change. We didn't even have vehicle. Didn't have no transportation and one day. My sister-in-law came up because she had seen changes in our lives and she She handed me a set of keys and said here. I have a van and undergrads. There you go get a choice and I said well how long's have been sitting there. And she says while at it's been down there about a year but Yours if you want it so I was pretty excited so we got a ride down there. I think she even took us down there and went there and I put the key in there and he pumped gas a little bit and that thing fared right up. My wife got a job at a at an egg farm and It was out away from from where we left but it just starts providing providing the things that that he knows that you need in order to survive and now realizing this word he said I will provide for you because if I can provide for all the other animals and birds and different things that live among us he says are two more important to me than than and I supply for them. So you know but these are things that issue as you learn and has you walk with Christ at. He starts teaching you on showing you yet. You never seen before because you were never in it but once you get over and you accept the Lord as your savior. I'll this open up so that you realize wow all this time I could ahead. This relationship in things would have been been better. But now you know having that relationship and Having that debt walk started in our lives night bought a study Bible and reading that me and my wife freedom debt together and praying together Corner Church and going into Sunday School and Bible study and doing those types of things and things that we look back at now. Survival Guide is really really doing a really blessing us and we felt blast and and it just it just goes on and on of the many blessings that God has been stowed on our lives that we otherwise wouldn't have experienced if we didn't get into that relationship with God but a true. This you know you you get tried and tested. Your faith is challenged at times because of You know you're not really sure if things and me not being raised into Bible didn't know really just head to head to rely totally guide of of what he wanted. Wanted me to do what he had planned for me. That's put it their way to the plan. Said he hid from me in my life and for not only me but my wife and my children and to be to beat that light. Everybody looked at me because I was a bouncer and I was doing all these things. People were afraid of me but to let guide into my heart in my life until him as my Lord and Savior was was just a life changing thing. It was ever something I have no regrets for the time said. I am challenge. I I just remember the way said I just to handle things and now I don't handle night anymore. I give to the Lord Thankful for what he's done for me gifted he's given to me and not only that but give me back. My family back Second chance an opportunity to to reach out at Amtrak district testimony that you can live in time search are going through now and you can stay in that and that turmoil or you can make a decision to get out of that turmoil and give it to the Lord no matter what. It is no matter whether you're native year on NATO and even at times I didn't feel I didn't feel alive. Where's he I guess I can say worthy of being used by GAT. But you don't know that until you take that step you don't realize how much God loves. Shore his plans are for you in his life and these are things that I had to learn is. I WANT. I walk with him. I'm holding his hand and as we walked together and go through this. He's always directed me our show me and Jeff. You'd hate to read Your Bible. You need to reach a word born. You need to do this it because it's not obese and I tell my kids that I guess you know something. Anybody can be an alcoholic. That's easy are you guys doors cupped alcoholic start drinking and eventually you'll become an alcoholic because you're allowed to take over consume your life. Anybody can be a drug addict. Anybody can be a prostitute or or drug dealer artistic. That's all the easy part. Larry Itliong and the Great Delano Grape Strike

"Year is nineteen sixty five. The Vietnam War is escalating. I have today ordered. Tha Nam the Air Mobile Division and certain other footage which will raise our fighting strength from seventy five thousand one hundred and twenty five thousand men almost immediately X. is assassinated Jeff Van. The gunfire went off and his hand was up. I remember turned around and the next thing I saw smell come falling back in the jet. Martin Luther King Junior leads a series of civil rights marches in Selma Alabama. They I want to say to the state of Alabama. Just want to say to the people as a matter of and the nations of the world that we are not about turnaround. We own the move. Now yes we on the move and Norway racism the Bannon and in California farmworkers faced with racial discrimination and economic hardship organizing for their rights as workers. And as okay so quick recap on the history of farm workers on the West Coast and specifically California. Immigrants had been exploited as cheap farm labor for years. I Chinese Japanese migrants then Filipino. Nationals arrived in the nineteen twenties. Mexicans became a large part of the farm labor force around time but also just poor folks of all backgrounds looking for work. Black White Brown were exploited. They lived in shabby wooden houses near the fields. They worked for hours under the Sun. Some even lived in former concentration camps which house Japanese Americans during their internment in World War. Two since they first started coming over in the nineteen twenties Filipino. Farmworkers had tried negotiating for better working conditions and wages with their bosses. Usually white guys called growers beheld. Strikes started organizations and unions. They were often met with violence. Or they'd lose their jobs. Gore's were higher other ethnic groups. Instead scabs to their strikes like the immigrants who came before them Filipinos were thought of as hard workers who were obedient easy to control but they were also militant having lived through years of race. Riots shootouts violent. Confrontations with police growers SCABS. It wasn't uncommon for Filipinos to draw knives on the picket line. Larry it Leon came up in this old school. Militant tradition of striking labor organizing and by the nineteen sixties. He was a leader of a union that represented farmworkers call the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee. A Walk which was supported by a larger union the AFL CIO. Larry worked the likes of Mexican American activists. Dolores Huerta and Filipino. American organizers Philip Aracruz. Who called Larry the most powerful Filipino leader in a walk? He had the most experience. I mean he'd been in a lot of strikes you know and he was the head of a walk at the time this. Miriam Powell a journalist and historian who spent almost a decade writing books and articles about another famous Labor leader Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers which we'll get to in a bit in terms of the nuts and bolts like being a Labor leader running a union. Larry was the guy absolutely. That's where story picks back up as a union organizer and leader one of Larry's jobs is to visit farms in the Central Valley to recruit. New members moves his family to Delano. Where he the mostly Filipino. Workers in May nineteen sixty five opportunity knocks in nearby. Coachella valley where there are also Filipino. Workers who need help. Here's Patrick again. As older Larry. Here's some workers did a dollar forty in our Filipinos are getting a dollar twenty five an hour. Now that don't make sense to me. It's time to strike okay so to strike meant. The workers would stop working until their employers. The growers listen to the demands but striking farmworkers wasn't going to be easy they were going against big agricultural business agribusiness. The man agribusiness was the most powerful industry in California at that time. Million Powell again arm workers were really the poorest people who also had no protection all of this sort of existing health safety and labor laws that applied to other professions. Do not apply to farm workers could be fired at will. They be made to work any kinds of hours or no restrictions no health or safety requirements so for them to take on this enormously powerful industry a was a huge talent when the farmworkers decide to go on strike in the Coachella Valley. They don't go to the fields to work. Instead we pick it in demand for better wages. They held up signs march. Saying chant confront the growers. They don't get paid and some workers are even arrested. But in ten days the growers give in the workers get their fifteen cent raise. Let's pick these grapes. After the harvest Larry in the farmer workers head north to the next job the grape fields of Delano. Where they hope to get the same rates but the growers refused to give the farmworkers meeting a community. Space might remember called Filipino Hall. Let's do this. Delano has a thriving Filipino community with lots of farm workers and members of eight walk so they actually establish a Filipino Hall. And at this meeting it is packed. It's mostly Filipinos but there are also some members who aren't the Black Puerto Rican Mexican even white their backgrounds different. But they all have one thing in common. You've suffered enough under the growers and they want real change now. Really neither raised by public actress on this anymore. We are getting any younger. We need better wages and union today. Dude these courses suck breezing my us of here. Larry and the other union leaders here the farm workers but understandably they have concerns if we strike. You might lose your house. You might lose your car. Your family might be on the streets. Hungary. It's going to be tough. Are you sure you want this farm? Workers decide to vote on whether or not they should go on strike back. My name is John Arlington born and raised here in Delano in present day Filipino Hall. I talked to John Arlington. Whose Father Mariano Lila Farmington also known as Bob was a Filipino immigrant and Delano farmworker. He was in Filipino Hall. That Fateful Day my dad and our family were part of a long agriculture workers organizing committee and with Larry. And Leon Philip the Veracruz People Osco and so many others were here in this hall. I'm talking to you now. In September seventh nineteen sixty five where we had a day long second meeting about the strike. And when Larry asked if anyone could make a motion regarding strike my father stood and made the motion to begin the great strike that started in Delano. Bob's made the motion to go on. Strike those in favor of the strike. Stand up and raise your hands high. Okay so what the heck everyone standing up. We're going on a strike you crazy. Bill Pinos Next Day September eighth nineteen sixty five the farmworkers show up at the grape vineyards ready for work according to the documentary Delano Manos by Marissa. Arroyo just like any other day at work. The farmer workers started picking Ripe Grapes on the vines. Then they'd set them down on the ground they move onto the next Bein. Fake Red Grapes. Set them down. Here's a clip from the film with organizer United Farmworkers Vice President. Pete Velasco we pick the ripe grapes and trim it and then move onto the next by under the same thing at moon. Our there are a lot of big grapes under that is when about the thousand five hundred. Pretty Pianos went on strike against the grape growers in

"We are yet again from New York City on ESPN news. You can tweeted. Hit Me at Patrick McEnroe. I am still working on getting my big brother John to get a twitter account. I have been and continue to be unsuccessful. People in my efforts you can give us a call by the way eight say. ESPN eight eight eight. Seven two nine three seven. Seven center is a phrase. Don't on hold your breath I've been holding for a while. Yeah I mean and twitter's been around. How long ten years or is it more than that by now? You don't have hung in this this far without doing it and something tells me I may get into a little trouble if I better to stay away. I'm feeling Great Patrick. We had a workout. Ah You and I are playing doubles down in Australia. When we head down there in the old guys event so that's going to be a lot of fun so I feel sharp? We got out. Yeah I'm more pumped up the football quarter-finals what we call quarterfinals. Eight teams theft. We call it. The quarter finals. Tennis is going to be awful. Interesting interesting or the wild card weekend was about as good as it could get in the NFL. So we're going to break actually break well somewhat breakdown as we can do it will break down a little bit before NFL Games. We'll do that momentarily. Let me just lay out to show for it because I know you want to talk a little bit about your are and they used to be his literally New New York Knicks. That's Jeff Van. Gundy he's going to join us at about one thirty today to talk all things. NBA What and what is the New York Knicks as well okay. So he's coming on about one thirty thirty one because to me. I've I feel like I'm I'm in. That knows me knows huge Knicks Fan. I'm trying to hang tough tough. Feels like it's getting a little more difficult for me I can. I can feel the edge edge starting to come out. A little. Rock is hitting the bottom. It feels like thirty. Hit by the way It's it's it's very depressing so I saw them lose Lakers by thirty and then they go and lose by twenty something to the jazz and the record now I believe at the moment and I know this is a national audience but New York to supposed to be the greatest city in the world. I know I'm biased. It is a wonderful place is to be. There's an energy unsurpassed almost any other city in the world. Certainly Los Angeles is back in a big way in the NBA. World with Flippers. And now the Lakers are backs. So I want to get into that with home and Malik. You'll be out there before you had down's Australia just to set up our number two for you. We'll have Damien woody. He'll come on and talk talk to us about all things. NFL Look Ahead to the game to coaching changes. That have happened in the last week and still waiting on the Cleveland browns and to see where they go. They've got their interview tomorrow with mcdaniels from New England. Maybe he can talk about the offensive line at the Tennessee Titans. They were really as good as they looked against the new ringling patriots. Who supposedly where this great defensive team and they got pushed around and I mean I know this guy? Derrick Henry is a great player like a great game last week. One hundred eighty or ninety yards incredible but there were some wide open holes up there in Gillette Stadium as I says you sat in Lumley. The owners was more on high. Was 'cause I'm at work even worse. Okay you're rating celebrational. I'm I'm a jets fan Jason something tells me if you're a patriots fan the last twenty years you've been heaven with the results. They've had with nine pro. Well don't and we don't want to hear any sour grapes from anyone Damien though and find out if he thinks old Mr Brady's coming back obviously Tom Brady sent out. Is I know you don't do so. You don't do twitter obviously but nor do instagram so really facebook right let me nor do you can turn on your phone now works. I've are looking at the. ESPN news here. The map I do. Have you do your homework. And I'm getting there okay. So what in. Tom Brady put out on instagram program. Essentially saying that he wants to come back he still has a lot more to do. He's just that's what he said. Where does he have to rhys reporting what he said that he has a lot more show? Of course breath. Many are speculating. What did he mean by that that he has a lot more? He's one six super bowls so that I guess that's where you're going. So many speculating. Did he mean that he wants to leave. And do it somewhere else or did he mean as he said numerous I'm he wants to play until he's forty five at a high level maybe once an NFL. I fell Tina Africa where they have more than one wife and he can have ten supermodel wife site or something I mean is that it's not enough what he's got already apparently apparently apparently not so he's doing pretty well but whatever he wants to do it should be allowed to do because he's earned right now he absolutely has apparently he wants to continue to try to earn it. So we're also we'll dig a little deeper into the NFL with our Buddy Howard Bryant. Who's a great writer? A couple of books on baseball. He was following the capture Nick's story about a month ago when he had a try out and also get into the Rooney rule with him which I know. Aren't you worried by the way Patrick when you you just mentioned capper nick and that's a whole other issue but he was a running quarterback back out a lot of success and was Super Bowl in an NFL championship game for a couple of years of his career. Right Jim Harbaugh did seem to do a very good job job with him elevating him to starting position and obviously this whole issue with him kneeling has been what everyone talked about. Alpine he he he he was similar. I guess the reason. I'm bringing up to Lamar Jackson Right. He's been derailed Shawn Watson. Does Shawn Watson. Yeah well but the point I'm making. How long can these guys last? I mean to me. It's extremely limited so I'd like to ask any of these. NFL insiders if they think that a guy like Lamar Jackson who's going to win the MVP this year can do this more than era too. Well I think I think I think it's a great point and I think when you talk about even Brady and what Bill Belichick wants to do with speculation that maybe he wants to move to a quarterback that can move that can get out of the pocket a little more. Obviously that Garoppolo. He'll make his first start in the playoffs for San Francisco this weekend. So we'll talk about that as well but I think these younger players these even I mean Russell Wilson to me is a perfect example. A Guy that obviously can run but he can also throw the ball incredibly well and I think initially when these types of players starting coming into the League your question was spot on on and they were getting hurt and they were getting knocked out quickly. But I think these younger guys or or learning. Now you see Wilson Hell Hell slide slide most of the time now when he's running to not get hurt and so. I think that these types of quarterbacks progressed even just in the last couple of years Jackson's not doing that. I mean he's trying to run over people right now not at the moment but guests that over time maybe certainly can throw the ball as well. He should he should be doing that had already shouldn't he. Second year I would say yes. She wants the last ten years in the NFL but to me. That should be a no brainer for the coach. But at any rate it's been fun to watch him. I mean he's set the all time record for quarterback in running and he can throw so to me He should be absolutely backing off. But in the meantime we're watching something special but we've seen it before and almost every time the result ends up being bad for that particular quarterback well how about kirk cousins by the West. Let's go to the first game while while we're on this topic Minnesota at San Francisco John and game number one on Saturday cousins the cousins. You know the knock was. He couldn't win the big one he delivered last weekend Not Folding it. All under pressure unbelievable. Throw to feeling and late late in the game. And then of course the controversial fe to Kyle Rudolph which by the way I do not say offensive pass interference. A lot of people said it was I think think the. NFL is making the right move by letting them. Everybody complained the last couple of years when they said. Here's here's the throw coming up that these guys were. They weren't letting them play away late in the game. So here's an example. where the defender? He was knocking his Rudolph's hands away as well at one more time because he looked like he pushed off. OPTIME did push off. He did push up but my point is the defender here comes again. We got to see these guys are on top of it. That's not the that's not the play play but we'll get okay. Supply the factor. Here it is again watch. Then we'll get a little known for this is the first down to the two over getting. I think we're getting there. Because it's come back from there. So he throws it up so the defenders. He grabbed his hand. The defendant right there before he pushed off so I would think that you of all people would say let them play kicked arrests out of it. I actually go the complete opposite direction I would you cannot. That's five dollars the I would say if the defensive defensive back or corner corner holds them penalty and her story that way. They'd stop doing it. But of course then there'd be score would be one hundred eighty four every game name which may not be such a bad thing to see a lot of scoring but so the San Francisco Defensive Line just see you know has five first round draft picks on defensive on led by the rookie. Nick Bosa Garoppolo obviously playing in his first playoff game or it's starting it. He's got two Super Bowl rings but he was riding the pine with Brady in New England. So this'll be learning learning. We're learning the trade. which is what I think? They should have done with Daniel Jones in the giants even though they don't claiming that it was the right move to don't put he Li- bench him. Why did they keep Eli? But that's a whole other story and by the way you mentioned kirk cousins who. I'm glad he whoa unbelievable through so I mean. I'm glad he won a playoff game. 'cause people get on these guys in these He he seems to be an excellent quarterback. I don't know if the monkeys office back he want. He wildcard game but he's got one. More standards are high. Yeah okay I mean it. Sounds like he's wondering or something right. He's one he won. I lay off game. I believe that's I want. You might have one one other one. But I think he's one too many. I don't have that stat. No and I think that was his first. Can we get says. There's he's one of their playoff as we're filling in here by the way in the Stephen a Smith show and I'm going to mention John Straight talk wireless runs on the same four G.. "Lightning round question number two with Jeff Van Gundy which Los Angeles team is better I think the clippers have better talent overall right now but I think the Lakers you know the four stars that are on the two teams to each everyone has like such injury his St Three of the four James the only one of you know minus last year that you can count on to play a lot of games so I'm going to say the Lakers right now regular season what about championship equity when we get to the end again you know by I know we're trying to say assuming everyone's healthy but we know how league works now it's like people sit out people are hurt people are reluctant to come back and I think they're going to be even more reluctant to come back because of what happened with durant onto last year so I'm GonNa still stay with the Lakers on that I think the clippers are like you know obviously Leonard and George and Arale in beverly and all those guys I think they're really good but I'm going to stay with the Lakers I would say the clippers but it's close although it's close and I have the opposite feeling about the clippers that I have about the nuggets where the second that I woke up to forty five in the morning and saw the they got the Colli and Paul George I kind of just said they're the favorites to win these to the again this this type of player is the most important kind of player you have and they just got two of the three best in the league including the guy who is arguably ascended to the best player in the League status and was just the finals MVP you and I do like their depth I think they have real depth all the guys you name plus Lou Williams Plus Zoo bots John Michael Green Rodney mcgruder will help them Landry Shamet they have real guys on their team I just I have a little bit of a nagging feeling that we all got caught up in the clippers euphoria and I still think they're the best team I think they're the best team period I think they're the best postseason team of their healthy right now not including whatever happens with all the players Mike needed I think the margin may be a little less than what I had initially thought what's your biggest question about the Lakers everyone's been talking about how do they you know they're starting a traditional center aideed clearly doesn't want to play a lot of center who's their fifth starter is it Rondo what does that do to their team what is due to Kuzma's he just a bench player what's their closing lineup like what's your take on their generaux kind of rotation issues what of what of all of that is going to be your focus in the first couple of weeks of the season I think for me it's a defense you know I think I'm interested to see you know Anthony Davis because you can get just how good he is you know because you you I 'cause I didn't love how he worked his way out of New Orleans or how he went about it but that's a that's a differently you can forget how good this guy is I mean he is a I mean of all the guys that you named we talked about Paul George Kawhi Leonard and you you said arguably the best you know most important position I could say Anthony Davis when he's at his top peak health and locked in and really ready to go he he might be the most unguardable out of all of them because you can finagle the match ups you want like you have Anthony Davis and now he you know you let's say they're playing Denver he plays center Yoka Chasta try to cover him that's a hard thing I mean you can his talents are such skills are such that Frank Vogel on his staff are going to be in charge a lot of matchup who you want the other team to have on the floor you can get off the floor I think he's that good the guy is a great great player I think he is the single biggest threat to Janas repeating is MVP. It's amazing. I remember when I first wrote about Anthony Davis I think it was at the end of his rookie year he was having an incredible month and talk to the player development coaches in New Orleans who are working with him and they talked about how the next thing the thing that's going to take us years maybe is to label moves and I remember thinking wow that's pretty basic and they would say watch the film he's a wonderful guy you can take one dribble and then he shoots and and because he can only take one dribble it kind of limits his ability to read the floor and make passes and all of this and then bit by bit by bit almost so that you like didn't notices it was happening in real time last season he's averaging four assists a game he's like busting out in out dribbles and crossovers in the open floor you're and dusting dudes who should be able to handle that and dunking and you would have these an his post game has matured to the point that he can he can do a Lotta he can play a power game he can play finesse game righty lefty jump hooks fakes counters his career high scoring averages twenty points a game he's done it twice last year he got down to twenty six I think he could average thirty this year four and a half assists something like that I think the Lakers are going to give him opportunities to create from the block one on one I think Frank Vogel is going to let them bring up bring the ball up the floor and go one four flat for him just go just go to the basket beat your guy off the dribble I think he's going to have an absolute monster and and as you said the one thing I didn't bring up in that whole Soliloquy was defense and I think I think you're right to pinpoint for all of the folks Asano defense is interrelated to the rotation questions and all that but for all the focus on fit and how are these stars GonNa fit and this applies to every team that has two or three stars I think offensive thing that's overlooked we didn't bring it up in Houston I think that's the biggest question for Houston Is How good what is their defensive ceiling I think you hit the nail on the head I just I just think Davis defensively again he's he's always had these just got what if thumb hurt the other day you know now the only thing that can get his way is injury and it has in the past so like he is a dominant dominant player I think could be the MVP certainly but even more so he can be the best player on a championship team. I believe that and then when you you know have a shared responsibility on that between James who I think certainly it's GonNa be Excited about their opportunities before I've said it all summer it sounds weird to say I think amid all of the snarky laughing at the Lakers and they did fall ass backwards all this and all the weird questions about their rotation that I outlined before and just you know they're the Lakers there are circus I mean this is there was a lot to make fun of amid all of that I.

"Do the low post podcast early on Tuesday morning where before we bring in the one and only Jeff Van Gundy to preview the twenty thousand nine hundred twenty twenty NBA season which is this podcast that's Ziprecruiter dot com slash low post ziprecruiter the mortis way to hire all right let's bring on the one and only Jeff Van Gundy to preview the two thousand nine hundred twenty twenty NBA season which is happening coach. How are you you doing very well thank you we've done this podcast every year for the past X. years and it feels like every year it is kind of then us trying to talk around the fact that we all know the warriors are winning the championship if they're healthy this feels kind of exciting right like you must be reinvigorated a little bit this is going to be I think this is a this year has a real air of mystery to it I think there's no doubt about that I think there are a number of quality teams like always have been quality teams but there's not one team that stands out like the warriors when they were healthy so I think it's GonNa be interesting I'm not sure that everybody you know to myself I mocked the optimism of all the teams at this point in the year and then you know everybody's had the greatest Maribel and the greatest fall of all and we're all together and we have all these pieces I and so I love that the Games and people become separated throughout the year like just how good certain teams are and how others either overestimate needed or over hike what they had by favorite is that every overseas trip which is obviously a little bit more loaded right now becomes like oh it's a bonding act worrying income back here we're going to buy I want one team to come back and be like man that overseas trip like it turns out that guy is super annoying and that guy got drunk at the bar and that guy like farted at practice and it annoyed everybody in like that that guy has like it took him forever to order when we went to the restaurant he was asking the waiter like a lot of annoying questions about the nature of the altri in the origin of the animal and I don't like I want one team to come back and be like that trip just ruined us that's what I want I I like that and I also like if it was a easiest eating dinner together to build basketball chemistry wooden everybody just go out to dinner like I I've never understood like this it's not really on the court it's getting to know each other off the court that is such a Crock crap and it helps good you are it can it can't hurt I can hurt if you get to know each other like if you're a rounded like you were saying around a guy more and more but it's not about hurting about we mystify the term chemistry so much like you know you have to go out and eat dinner together or you know go to the club together no you don't guys can play well together that barely interact off the floor like this idea that you need to eat Inter and know that the that that guy over there has four brothers and three sisters you know I mean that's ridiculous and what other business do we say that that we've really needed hello everybody to work well together but I do think it helps like we just had our espn I know you and I know I know so many people think that and I am here to tell you some of the teams I've been around have had nothing to do with each other on off the floor right and they play exceptionally on the floor well look I am I am going to continue to believe in the power of dinner alcohol Did you did you over the summer did you put on any power of muscle did you lose weight did you work on your corner three are we going to see anything did you work on your suit game like did you get a couple more fitted suits are we going to see anything what are your off season off-season editions There were no additions because I was overseas in Australia. Although in China but I would say that one thing get add to my game is I understand why Brett Brown for a period of time left and went to vacation in Australia and came back fifteen in years later because it is beautiful it is incredible country I mean we were only there a week I could've spent uh the next three years there was that Nice I was incredibly impressed with Australia I gotta get over there I've never been there my wife has been all over the world she says her favorite city she went to Sydney Melbourne might be number two so I I gotta get over there okay let's do because this is an unusually well it's not even on its feels on you because of the warriors dominance skewed everything about the NBA for the last five years I wanted to do lightning round with Jeff Van Gundy I got a lot of questions I want to get your take on a lot of questions are you ready for lightning round question number one sure it number one who is the most legitimate championship contender and I realized that's an amorphous concept because things are going to change between now and the start of the playoffs trades an injuries and buyouts and all of that stuff but just factor that Inter don't factored and I don't care in a universe in which everybody is relatively healthy which of the following three teams is the most it's legit Inner Circle Championship contender the Denver Nuggets the Houston Rockets or the Utah Jazz I would say Houston on that I liked Houston's team they took an overseas trip so they're obviously great chemistry I I I liked their team I think they have a lot of questions do I think the idea it's it's been sort of pontificated that there's been this huge upgrade westbrook over Chris Paul I thought Chris Paul other than his availability I thought he played very well for Houston now he then he played fifty eight games so obviously he missed a ton of games and two years ago he wasn't healthy in the most important games of the year against Golden State but I thought good job here and I think it was a more seamless fit between he and harden than it is now between Harden Westbrook I'm fascinated to see how works but I really like Houston steam I think they've been knocking on the door for quite a long time and they have the ultimate home run hitter that no one has an answer for particularly in the regular season heart I went Utah and Houston I actually think people are a little bit underrating Houston because assuming it will not work between Russell James I think it'll work fine I think they'll find ways to make it work I Bet Russ has bounced back in his catch and shoot three point percentage I hope he does because if he doesn't they're really not going to be as good as they think what makes me worried about Houston is depth now you can say that doesn't matter in the playoffs because you only player top six or seven guys fine I just feel even before the last ten days there's just such an air of similar being like drama around they just fired Mike Dantonio entire staff save for two or three people he's on an expiring contract There were all sorts it's a rumblings about James and Chris not getting along and how did that sort of force their hand maybe a little bit and bringing in Russ which as you have said has uncorked chemistry issues and now you throw in the owner and Darryl it just feels like it feels like there's a recipe there for it to go a little bit haywire that scares me a little bit now here's what scares me about Utah and why I said Utah I say something about Houston I absolutely you said about Mike and Tony I'm interested when a player comes into the last year of his key on-track there's all this excitement because he's going to be free agent and he's going to have a career year and he's going to maximize opportunities but when a coach comes into his last year it's a negative term it's like a lame duck you know at the first sign of problems you know are the player's GonNa take advantage of it why don't we look at coaches coming into their last year as a chance to have a great year and build their market value I think Mike Dantonio if somebody's going to come into his last year of his contract he got the perfect temperament to make it work the very very best I just love the way he's not distracted by anything I have no idea why let go of so many staff numbers particularly delicate to this day I'm confounded. They brought him into save their defensive middle of less c-i-s I I I have no idea you know why that would be because Mike was against it so he's the guy that dealing with him what could jeff as delicate done to frustrate an ownership or a front office so much that they go against the wishes of the head coach that one makes no sense but I think Mike Antoni to handle all of this you know noise that's been going around Houston he's the perfect guy now to me Accuser Jeff Van Gundy ISM to me Lame Duck is not an indictment of the coach lame duck is about what it does the broader team chemistry when everyone on the team knows that this coach could be in jeopardy might not be here for a long into that's not different than a player in the last year of his contract or a player who ever would knows kind of has half a foot into the trade request territory I think it's just less about out I think it's just more about broader uncertainty and what that does to chemistry than it is about anything that the coach has done wrong I find similarities between the quote unquote lame duck coach in the player on an expiring contract or the player like an Anthony Davis situation last year where everybody knew this is a simmering thing that's going to happen but can I tell you about you Utah I the reason I chose Utah is I think defensively and and on the glass they're still going to be very good as long as go bear is healthy and Conley at the top of it it's like it's like a catcher center fielder combination their undoing in the playoffs has been an inability to hit three he's like a almost a conflict the they've all been zapped by some sort of like like Zombie Ray and an inability to have anyone who can create shots then Mitchell who was sort of over taxed when when he would get the ball with six on the shot clock every every time you have to do something to me they've solved all of those issues so I think they're going to be a very very good two-way team the one thing that I keep coming back to is the most important kind of player in the League is a big wing who can hurt chew from the triple threat position who can get the ball eighteen feet from the rim burrow his way in their draw help good passer create open shots teammates the Los Angeles teams have three.

Without Kevin Durant, Game 4 is must-win for Warriors

"Talking NBA finals with Chris, Mannix Klay Thompson who missed game three will play game four Kevin Durant whom this the last eight games will not play game. Four Steve Kerr said there's a good chance Katie playing game five or six Klay Thompson spoke about what it would mean if miss the finals entirely. Well, it suck if Kevin can't come back. I mean, I still think we'd have a good chance to win the finals. But obviously. That takes a huge hit. Think it would make us to cut favor anymore without him, you know teams very good. We just love the candor of the Golden State Warriors, like as a team like Klay, whatever. But dream on Jay handed. Steph is usually pretty Cantu. I love that team like is this. Well Kerr's as well, who is the favourite in this series of Katie doesn't return? Oh, it's oh I mean, I still again, we can have different conversation on Monday. If Klay Thompson comes back and looks exactly like the Klay Thompson, we saw before the injury. But if he is significantly slowed it's impossible to look at this series and say Toronto isn't the favorite now we discussed this yesterday. I disagree with Jeff Van Gundy said when he said that this war is team wasn't a playoff team, but it certainly isn't a final team, and it's probably not a team that gets out of the Western Conference as currently constituted so without Kevin Durant. And with a hobble Klay Thompson, Toronto is, is a clear favourite in my eyes. Tonight. What's important is where is clay and not only wears he during the game.

"Jeff van gundy right here with steven on espn radio based on what you're saying coach i think it's all right to label jeff green asleep in this series because obviously you're going to have tristan thompson who shown us he's willing to be active on the boards act of defensively and more importantly as he has shown in the past he can actually do some he actually do some defending on the perimeter he's got the foot movement that that enables him to be affected out on a perimeter defending we point shots but with jeff in the case of jeff green if he can hit perimeter shots on you then if you're tied lou you can li green in that game and to me that might be the sleeper to watch in this series wouldn't you say i think he's a big he's got a huge role in this series whether he starts or comes off the bench i would start him and continue to roll with the team that played so well and game six and seven but then the other one for me to give them any chance at all giorgio has to be really good really good on offense where he's making spot ups and his aggressive and pick and roll actions and then defensively with his link he's gotta be good whether he's garden curry or he gets switched onto thomson he's got that ability to be a really good defensive player so the three to me most important players in this series for clevelanders obviously james has to be better than he's ever been greenhouse to continue on as he's played in game six and seven in the eastern conference finals and george hill he's got to play better on the road he's been very.
