"It's Jeff Skinner is harassment Salonen. Is it? Sam reinhart. Is it just get to the draft and go from there? Or what are your thoughts? Let me hear it. Give us your thoughts eighty three thrill five fifty one eight eight five fifty to five fifty now. I definitely want to get a little bit into the hiring of Ralph Krueger in itself. And, and I think for me this higher as a decent higher. It's not flashy. It's not. You know, one that you can jump out of your seat and hoot and holler for then at the same point. It's not one that you can slam your head into the desk or however, you want to approach it. It's, it's nothing like that at all. I, I honestly feel that this was a pretty darn good higher for the Buffalo Sabres with bringing in a guy of Ralph Krueger's caliber, he's had experienced that the NHL level mind you. It's been limited with coaching experience wise. He's been a, a scout for the hurricanes. I believe it was believe it was some sort of European scouting role with them for five years, and he went on to win a Cup in the two thousand six season with this hurricanes team that I'm not aware of that. They actually won the Cup. But, you know, he's actually got a Stanley Cup, then he was an associate coach with the Oilers for two years before becoming the head coach for the lockout-shortened season in. In that year. He went nineteen twenty two and seven ten points out of a playoff spot. And they ended up moving on from Kruger, because they brought in Dallas aching. And that was after Steve Tambellini was fired as the general manager and then Craig mctavish took over as the GM in Edmonton. And then from there, I think it's pretty much the same story they continued to miss out on the playoffs. They continue to go through coaches. And then the laughing stock that Peter Shirley is came in helped him. Get to one playoff appearance, but pan some of the trades, and the signings that Cherie made. He's just going to stricken that Edmonton Oilers group for quite a bit here, which is unfortunate and not only that, but can Holland comes in as their GM. And good luck with not trying to sign any long-term deals that have stupid. No movement clauses are no trade clauses. That ought to be fun for you guys. But nonetheless, Krueger, a guy that has been widely regarded as a very good communicator. That's maybe his strongest skill is being able to connect with his players. Also a guy that is willing to adjust to the type of team that he has coaching style. What he wants to do on the ice is all pretty much going to become on what he has in his players. And I think that's kind of what the Sixers need at this point the last two coaches that they've had here in Dan byles when Phil Housley they brought in their own system, tried to implement their own system onto the players. They didn't have the players that fit their system. But it's like trying to fit a square peg into around whole. That's pretty much. What Phil housing dance? Byles tried to do it didn't work out for them. They both get fired after two years now head coach had known before that was a guy who had no system. He just came in descend. Let's go, let's go out there and give it our best effort, but ten Nolan, obviously, was communicator, he got through to some of the players and some of the players, especially a guy like Zambia's Gergen's. Sin was able to respond the best to a guy like Ted Nolan. And that's why Gergen's ended up being an all star mind you laugh, you had a huge influence on that. But also just the fact that. That he was able to get through to the players and be able to connect with them even though the team was terrible. Ted. Nolan was good communicator. It's just no system. I don't think Ralph Krueger's that type of coach at all he's a great communicator. He gets to his players. I think he understands his players, and, and it was kind of impressive to hearing about some of what he had to say with when he was the chairman with Southampton. And some of the things they did off the field and trying to understand how things work. I mean, I'd hope that they bring that into the NHL and figure that out with, like a can't remember what is just it's just the sports science stuff of things. Hopefully, they're able to have that be able to integrate that into the NHL in with the sabres and hopefully that'll get that to work as well. But the thing about Krueger, though, is that it seems like he's just he's got something in mind. He's got a plan in mind in his head for how to play the game, but he's going to adjust he's going to play around with it. He's going to see what he has to fit here in buffalo, and I'm and I'm sure that he's. Gonna do his due diligence to figure out the right system to fit in for buffalo. And to help them be. Help them be at least somewhat of a contender this year. I don't expect the savers to make the playoffs this year. I don't a lot of people don't want to hear me say that, but judging by the past couple of years. This team cillizza ways to go. I mean we thought last year couldn't get any worse than the year before when they finished dead last and luckily won the draft lottery for Rasmus, Darlene. This past year. They got the ten game win streak which was great. We all were loving it. They were winning. We were having fun. And then around mid December point things really started to turn for the worst, and it never got better from there to wins in the month of March. Phil Housley gets fired and pretty much the team, they just were not on board with what was going on. So, you know, I it was a disastrous end to the season for the Buffalo Sabres. And now they're going to have to figure it out again. They've got Kruger's that head coach now you move forward from here. And that's why the topic comes up today. Ralph Kirk is your head coach. That was the biggest thing you had to do that was the first the very first thing you had to do hire the new coach that move from their what's next a lot of people. Derek said it right off the bat to is get Jeff Skinner resigned new deal. And from what we've indicated and I think what Mike Ajello said is that it's not going to come down to money. It's going to be more on term is going to be a long eight year deal. Like I think Jeff Skinner would want or is it going to be something like a five or six year deal sort of Austin Matthews gotten his mind you, I think it was more based on. He can become a free agent sooner rather than later. But I think the fact is, is that with the approach to Jeff Skinner, and I think how the sabers want to approach, it is that they don't want to sign a guy to an eight year deal or long-term deal, sort of like what happened call a post so you pay him on that money. And the next thing you know, they're games changing their game changes their game goes south. You know, they, they can't adapt to the style of play that's going on in the NHL anymore. They're slow there. I don't know how you want to describe it. I mean for Kyle postal. I mean he can skate still. It's just he's definitely a little bit slower than the rest of the group. He's, he's the he's just hasn't taken that next step to keep. Up with the pace of play. We saw happen that Molson to Matt Wilson, re signed a long term deal and some good money. And then next thing you know the game changes drastically for him in a matter of year or two and his game falls off a cliff, and he ends up in the H L for the past two seasons. And I was going to be an unrestricted free agent. But the I don't ever see map Molson being in the NHL ever again. But the thing is, is that I think with the way the sabres are trying to approach this Jeff Skinner contract. Stalemate I don't know if you'd call the stalemate, but nonetheless, how they're approaching this is they don't want to get them signed, long-term, and then within five years, the eight year deal in the final three years of the deal that pays him, I don't know eight and a half million. We're just throwing out numbers here. They don't want him to be in the final three years, a guy that can't produce at the same level that he did when he signed the contract. Be Jeff Skinner is a forty goal score. Now he managed to get forty goals. He got two goals and final game of the regular season against Detroit in the seven one win, and he hit the forty Mark for saving to do that in a while. But this is where I think the savers are at they know that Jeff Skinner is very talented. They know that he can score goals, and that the way he played with Jack Eichel this year on the sabers top line. He is a very good goalscoring winger that can be a factor in this organization for the long-term now. How long term is that I think the sabers don't wanna go super longterm again, eight years. I think is not where they want to be I think they're looking more for five years for six years. Just because of that risk of what happens if this guy's game. Kinda stalls or takes a turn for the worst. And I feel bad, too, because like postal when he signed with the sabres he was one of the top free agent targets he was playing at a decent pace. But thing that helped was he was playing with Gionta Varas with the New York Islanders comes the buffalo thoughts, are you can slot in with Jack Eichel or you can slot in with Ryan Riley? He did for a bit a worked for a little bit. But then he's game kind of turned a little bit because the pace of play got stepped up to another level. And it's been a struggle. And I think the postals fit into that third fourth line role right wing very well. I mean the production that he put up this year and in that spot was decent. I think it was a pretty good output for a guy in a third or fourth line right wing role. However, you can't pay a guy six million dollars a year to play a third or fourth line role and. Average, like.

Buffalo Sabres: Ralph Krueger being hired as head coach

"By now, the sabers hired Ralph Krueger to become the nineteenth head coach in sabres history. We've been all over this week Kruger's interesting career he coached in the NHL for Edmonton for one season shortened season at that. Then was let go ended up as ended up in an administrative position an upper management position with a Premier League team in England Southampton and has dropped that went looking for the next thing and along came longtime friend Jason Botterill whose father was well acquainted with Krueger as well. Krueger was a student in his fifth grade class apparently. And here we are Botterill said, by the way this morning on WJR that Jeff Skinner wanted to see who the sabers would hire before continuing in negotiation. So. This doesn't really tell us. Whether this is a good thing for that. But it's interesting, I suppose that Skinner wanted to

"You know, you point to oppose one of the reasons the sabers struggle to pay a lot of money for a guy that doesn't really produce lately. And I think when I see that I see back, and I think you can sign a guy too big money. He could not produce, and you can still be good. You can trade away. Jeff Skinner, and you can still be good. You can trade a package of trying to think all the other teams. Like this the team that wins the Stanley Cup. Didn't make perfect moves. They made some that worked in some that didn't and you can still be good. So that that's that's what I end up thinking as I wait for the sabres someday be good if they hire on board, which would be after the world championships. I think that would go over very, well, it would be a popular move. It doesn't mean what it would do to their season tickets. If they're going to experience a second perjure what's going to happen with with that. But maybe a little bit of distance from them. Is good for a lot of people. I don't ever get that distance. Because I think about the sabers nonstop. But maybe a little distance will help that. And I'm thinking about tailgating thinking about the Bill season and their schedule which I've been raving about since it came out. So that's what occupies my brain. The other thing that I think about all the time. I've mentioned a few times if anyone wants to Email me, they know they know about this. This is one of those times I'm gonna use the show to get advice to seek advice and seek help. So if I I've been training for a triathlon say probably I've been training for about seven or eight weeks running biking swimming. Now, what's the one thing that holds you back from doing a triathlon, swimming, right? Not everybody swims a lot I've been swimming. I've been trying I've been trying to build my endurance. And I'm getting gains in running endurance meal. Run longer run better, you know, more efficient fast yada, biking fine. Endurances? I'm doing great enjoying the training doing having a great time. I'm not swimming. Well, I'm not getting a gains in the swimming, endurance distances. So if anybody out there has ever done this and decided they want to swim and do a triathlon. And part of it do the swim. If anyone has any advice, Email me Whitey WJR five fifty dot com because I could use. I what I needed someone to tell me. That's how it's supposed to go. You're supposed to not feel like you're making any ground any gains when it comes to swimming. And the other stuff is supposed to come more easily. That's kind of what I'm hoping. But I've enjoyed it. It's been it's been good. And I've also been waiting for it to be nice out because it's not fun to run in the rain. Sometimes it is. But a day like today to get outside fantastic. You know, I mean, I mean, I'm ready to to run. Get on a bike outside instead of just being in the gym because it's been raining, non stop. So your your your advice, fellow potential triathletes current triathletes? I've yet to run the race. I'll tell you. I'm not bragging, I'm not in this thing to win it. I'm in it to finish. I don't need to win. That's a good starting. Yeah. Right. Right. Presumably, I would finish ahead of some other people, but the swimming portion of it, I don't know. It's going to be tough..

"Skinner is the top priority. We we need to continue to build talent. So the coach that comes in here is not floundering and being fired after one or two seasons because it's not working we need to put a team on the ice. A team of talent. Jeff Skinner had a fantastic season this year for the Buffalo Sabres. And I think that he can even build off that I do believe that Jeff Skinner moving forward with the Buffalo Sabres as Jason Bochum starts to round out this team a choir and and develop higher end skill. I think it's gonna work out well for everybody, but me top priority. This summer is not just obviously. We need leaders. We need someone to command this room and bring structure to this young team. But first and foremost, I think that we need we need to acquire. More talented hockey players in to allow Jeff Skinner to sign a coach and then to allow Jeff Skinner to leave. I mean. Okay. Where are you going to fill that void to sell? Because for me. It's about the coach it's about who's going to come in and give that team direction and structure, a coach could come in and say this I I've seen Jeff Skinner play. And I'm not sure that fits into my system. But that coach if it's McClellan or vino or whoever Greg button mention Darryl Sutter. That's where he would he would get out of retirement. But if a guy like Darryl Sutter would come in and say, you know, what I've seen Jeff Skinner for years now. And I'm okay, if you guys I walk I think we could use the money on different guys or whatnot where I'm not. I'm not there Sutter. I don't know. I'm not Todd McLellan. I don't know. I'm just saying that coach as that adamant about it. And that. Passionate about the fact that he can make this team win in a certain. That's why I'm saying coach is number one. I do believe that Jeff Skinner your coach will make this team win. When he acquires the talent to make the team win. It's not just about acquiring team unless he's going to be on a five year. If I'm the coach I'm saying we need Geoff Garin on esteem forty goal men was on face for fifty struggled on the stretch. But still I'm just in the number one priority in my book is get the right new coach for but what what if you're trying to acquire a coach. And you're and you're saying, hey, we have a great young team. There's a lot of talent here. We've got Jack Eichel and we've got Rasmi, Darlene. And we've got. Tim, right. Are you stopping because I'm stopping at two elite guys? Okay. And you know what? I mean, when you're when you're when you're Joel Quenneville, and he's looking at Florida, and he's looking at a ninety six point bark off in a ninety two point Hugo and a thirty six goal Hoffman and Eck Blad and a sixty point win villas. Also, looking at Roberto Longo in James Rymer and Montenegro and he says, well, we don't have really any goaltending right now. While you have a thirty nine forty year old goaltender that most likely could retire this year. Do you agree with that? Yup. You open up an opportunity for maybe a Sergei Broschi. Or, you know, who knows all I'm again, there's you're in Florida's priority was it to acquire Brodsky and Pinera n- or was it to get a coach. And then get to that. I'm the coach the chicken the egg really like the situation is not gonna come to a team if he doesn't feel that he's going to be put in a position to succeed stand. I, but if Joel Quenneville goes to to Florida, we're trying to trying to bring Panara, and I've had Pinero which icago, and we're gonna have to pay a lot of money and really to be honest with you. I don't think we should go after Penin, then you're del town. You say, okay. Coach q your demand, and I got you for that reason use pin Aaron, but I don't wanna I understand what you're saying. But use per Narran paren- loved Joel Joel Quenneville is now in Florida parent sitting there looking at Florida and licking his chops and Russians like to be in New York or Miami. Yes. Absolutely. It's it is for you to bring in a top end coach that you feel is going to make your organization better with more structure and and accountability. You have to have you have to have the right players in the right team in first and foremost, there's gonna be no coach is going to walk into an organization and say, you know, you wanna know what my? Top priority after finding a new coaches so find a new coach Mullen priority. What's number two signed Jeff Skinner? So they come together. There's there's two and then after that everything else is secondary your death at Ford, maybe a second line center. That is secondary your your draft that never number seven overall. Maybe a trade in the off season that is secondary. But your two biggest things coach resigned. Jeff skinner. And then what den then you're deal with your your draft agency free agency is so far down the list right now free. Here's the thing. As far as I'm concerned in the way, the free agency has gone number of years free agency is not the way to build your team anymore. You got to build through developing your own players, which which is you know, what most teams want to do. And you you continue to insert special pieces into your lineup, maybe through trades. Like, you look at brand menteur Montour was a fantastic pickup for Jason Botula. It's I mean, he is exactly what the NHL is all about a puck moving skating offense of guy. He's got a little flare physically to them. I mean, this was an outstanding pickup for for bottle. But for me. In today's game. You're not winning. You're winning games. If you're gonna rely on one guy to continue to produce points for you in Jack Eichel because you know, what great players can be shut down. But you can't shut down depth. But I think you can adjust and maybe in the way you can validate in my point is that you can bring money tour. You can recite Skinner you can bring whatever. But if you don't have the right coach and the right structure doesn't go anywhere. So find the rate coach is my number one priority. Then obviously reciting Skinner. I want him here. I want him here. I want him to be resigned as a big part of this team. But if you had to tell me, which one is more important right now for me, it's coaching because we've gone through a bunch of coaches find the right coach, I b that right guy. And then the flying coach. But then in the situation that the sabres are in. I tell you you have to be patient because there's gonna be a turnaround in in. You know, how these guys are going to play in their defensive zone neutral zone. The whole environment is going to change because you're gonna have a new coach come in. And it takes time to implement these things. Absolutely PD. Can I play? Oh, no. I'm I'm I don't know. I've been sitting here listening to you guys literally broken down every single scenario and it, but I'm going to sell this. Because I think you guys said it perfectly. I think the coach and Skinner are kind of the same thing. They are the top priority. But from and I think they're coming. You're going to get a coach I believe Skinner's coming back. So I think you're going to be able to resign him. And so for me, the top priority believing that those things are already going to happen a good coach and Jeff Skinner. I'd say fill out the rest of your forward line like fill out try to you need a second line. He the second line. But I also think you need I think you need to you're going to have to fill out your Gerguson Larson situation, if they're not back your what do you do is? You know, where's Kyle posts are going to be what all these things. I think there's a lot of other questions that that are going to be asked and answered over the off season to add more depth to this roster. One for you. Yes. Do you think? So Sam Ryan art can sign a extension starting on. July one this year because he signed a two year deal bridge still is that a summer where you start a negotiation. Because now, you know, what Sam is you've you've seen it for a couple of years. Now is that a priority long-term or a long term contract for some rain to start negotiation this summer, this guy tweets us says cell? Offer sheet. Mitch martyr lets us there Drager eleven thirty about offer shooting. Mitch martyr. Marty mardi doesn't think offer sheets are happening. Jeremy's full on about offer sheeting eleven million. And I'm with them. I'm I don't know if it's a sabres, but I think someone's gonna offer sheet him we'll be right back district that coming up next..

"It's skulls, and they're sort of. I guess my stats, but I think that you're not going to get those good teammates and good linemates. And so that in that sense guys get to share it a little bit. Jeff Skinner, the postgame Brian back to you. Thank you Paul there with Jeff Skinner. He now is up to forty on the season and he'll finish with forty as he said a nicer number. Skinner? We know at one point, you know, on pace furred in the fifties cooled down a little as the whole team did during that poor stretch in February and March, but to me the best thing that Jason Bochum has on his saber GM resume was the Jeff Skinner trade having not having to give up a first round draft pick or any proven NHL player cliff, PU the biggest prospect name involved the fact that he was able to pull that trade off and get a forty goal score is very impressive. But that can be erased very quickly by the fact that if Skinner leaves and season at the sabres come nowhere near making the playoffs. Skinner's season will be remembered for a nice forty goal effort, but only one year, and to me, I still think he has to do everything that it takes to get done proven goal scores in this league that can skate with the speed Skinner has with the. Mistry that you have with Jack Eichel like there's a value in that. And if it means you have to overpay a little well, then so be it. If it means you have to overpay a little because you're the Buffalo Sabres and right now, you're one of the least attractive places maybe to sign based upon winning. Then you have to do it. Now. There's reasons of course, that Skinner might find it attractive here. We've of course, all talked about the fact of where his family is located about the fact that maybe he does get along great with Jack Eichel guy that he would maybe, of course, want to be a part of playing with the fact that he loved the passionate of the energy of the city at how it loves hockey. Because of the fact he played his whole life in Raleigh. Where maybe he didn't get that fact. So there's some things that could be going in Buffalo's favour, including the fact that buffalo has room to sign him, including the fact that buffalo can give him eight years that no other team can do he has all those going in his favor. The only really checkmark that the sabers do not have and there's no bargaining chip here at all for this is the fact that if he says I want to Stanley Cup while still good. Well, Jason Bochum can promise things and say, hey, you know, we're we're going to try and do this and try new that. And but ultimately Jeff Skinner says, you know, what I just I value raising that Cup. And I don't know how many more years I have to do it. And he goes and signs with a team that maybe is very close to that. I could see that happening very easily. You'd like to think that the player will take everything into perspective. I'm sure he will you know what ours? Everybody make decisions about. Well, you make decisions about your family situation. Your your your money situation, your happiness co workers and the work atmosphere and somebody argue that's good in buffalo, some bad in buffalo depends what he really values, but if winning is on the top of his list, then Jason Baccio has his work cut out to me. The biggest worry I have was that if it was going to get done. Why isn't it done already? Here's Phil housing. Now live in Detroit. His final thoughts after the final game. Fill both offensively and defensively. You had to be released that effort. Yeah. Like, I said this morning. I really liked our last two games. And this carried carried into tonight. Really good start. You know, I thought they were gonna come up pretty hard being at their last home game. But guys turn it up and found a way to get early goal between Long Island in these three games that we that. We're talking about a lot of conversations. So we need to play in how you need to prepare. And you know, obviously these results that's a good way to end it. It's not where we want to be in. Fortunately, as a group, and but I handed to the guys because they finished off the right way could have easily turned another direction, but they fought Nashville Asheville we have the big win against. Big big like right up and down the lineup. Everybody played well without the puck or checking was excellent tonight. And we got rewarded..

"I don't know. I didn't watch a single second of anything all star related for the NHL or Pro Bowl related at least not live. Of course. I saw the highlights. Jeff Skinner scoring a filthy bar down goal. Scored a nice goal. So John Gibson stepped on a puck. He had a forgettable night in at all star game. Yeah. That's pretty much it. That's all. It's all. I know that happened who want who won the hardest shot. Competition was charter jar was not there. It was actually Jonathan Carlson. Your defending Stanley Cup champion capitals one or two point eight. No, it's nothing kind of a poor showing one or two point eight where it was like shea Weber versus chara to be like one zero seven one zero eight Carlson at one hundred plus both times, a believe Brent burns second shot was triple digits, but it's I didn't register nocco. Stamkos was ninety six ninety three. I don't remember the fourth guy. Well, at least it was cool to Kyle Williams. Get the he's still got to go out on top. We'll probably never no one will ever. Remember his last game being a Pro Bowl? Will remember the dolphins game where he walked off the field and caught a pass? But. Pretty good showing Kyle Williams leading a defense in the Pro Bowl. They allow seven points pretty good. I don't wanna talk much about that today, though, nor did I think anybody was gonna expect me to. I do wanna talk some football tonight tonight kept by the way, Jodi eight hundred zero five fifty is the phone number. If you want to get involved in the conversation, I got a Twitter poll hockey really did you can vote at sneaky, Joe WGN. We'll bring that up later. I wanted to start with some football because. You know, we're not gonna have a lot of draft storylines. I'm assuming this year. We all have mock drafts will have oh. Who's this left tackle? He's really good. Maybe he could go nine the bills or they'll have to soon draft wide receiver at nine. We got this guy. This guy this guy, and here's the good and the bad with each of them. We'll get that. But there's not gonna be any drama really with the bills surrounding them in this off season when it pertains to the draft NC. Yes. With all the cap room in all the holes that's going to be interesting the draft come and go they're going to get their guy. We're all going to be happy for the most part. Let's see directly kicker or something. And we're all going to go. Yeah. Ninth overall pick. He'll be good these ninth over oh should be. And we'll hear scouts talking him up. Seeing always good at this. He's good at this. Good at this. And it won't be unless like like I said if they drafted something ridiculous. If they drafted a running back, this would be different. But for the most part they're going to draft someone it's not gonna be very polarizing we're going to wait for him to play next year. And you know, we'll go from there. Quarterbacks were the dramas. Trades is where the drama is. And we know for one the bills are not going to be involved in drafting a quarterback this year zero percent chance the same percentage chance. Apparently the Tom Brady is going to be playing his final game on Sunday. Because that's what he said to Jeff Darlington yesterday. Tom Brady, not retiring I had mixed that in. I don't even know why I just did that I was on a roll. And now, I'm just thinking to myself, I'm depressed because I just brought up that thing. But anyways. They're not drafting quarterback trades trading up. Probably I don't know why they would do that. I mean, I guess they could. Trey down is really the MO the interesting part. I think about this draft. And that's the most interesting option that the bills will have we play. I pick dot com here on the station a lot, and that's always the route I go and the most people go play that game. Because you get the trade offers to move down four spots. Get three second round picks them in this year. The bills might not have that opportunity. It is all going to be dependent on what these other teams think about their current quarterback situations and what they think about the quarterbacks in this draft class. And as it stands right now, it seems like Dwayne Haskins is going to go before the bills pick it nine as it stands today. It's January twenty eighth a Tonkin change from now until then, but if the draft happened tomorrow, it feels like you would go to either the Jaguars in the giants bowl teams pick in front of the bills. So the bills are sitting at nine I see a story that runs across the timeline today on the Broncos. What was the word smitten smitten smitten? What does that mean, by the way, smitten a series infatuation? Okay. You knew that. Or you're guessing to look it up because I normally new smile as like a medieval term you. But it does have a secondary term when used smitten like man, I'm I'm falling for this, dude. Okay. So that's the word that was used the scribe. John Elway in his feelings with Missouri quarterback. Drew lock who of course will be draft pick this year projected by many to go in the first round not everybody has them as a first round pick though. No one really I've seen that that I've seen hasn't like as the top guy. That's usually reserved for either Haskins or Murray. If John Elway is smitten to use this reports terminology with this quarterback withdrew lock. Then maybe the best avenue for the bills to trade down. If they're looking for that because they do have a lot of holes, and you don't want to fill them all in free agency you'd like to get assets. It's always a good idea. Get as many assets as possible. The patriots were going to watch on Sunday plea in the Super Bowl again. And it's a little different with them. Because they're always picking at the end of the first round that is a team that has always trading down always. And we're the bills here for the most part their team that's treated up. Think of their last two big draft day trades. Not the last you actually, let me let me throw out the Alan traits. Just for a second. Let's go before that. But what the big to trades before they pick Allen. It is trading up for Sammy Watkins, and it's trading down in drafting trade is white. Look at those two traits philosophically, they were picking around the same. I think they were picking eleventh with the pick that they trade down the chiefs came up and got Mahomes, and when they picked Watkins they were sixth seventh eighth tenth. I believe it's time that's right now. And I want to say they were just a little tad lower than that. When they traded up the walk ins. I think it was seven. I'm not sure they move up to draft Watkins look back on that trade. Does anybody hold that trait and good regard right now? Nobody does. Do we pick? It was by the way. Move from ninth to fourth. Thank you. Nine thousand four wants to your wall. Do we have some decorations in there? We don't have a lot of sports stuff hanging on the walls in here. But we add something that told us we're saying he Watkins where that came from. So that's good enough. Anyways. They moved up from nine to four nobody holds that trading. Good regard right now. Even if you defend Sammy Watkins like I will I think he's a very good wide receiver. I think he's a number one wide receiver in this league, not an elite receiver, but the dude can't basically because the dude can't stay healthy like he's the full package. He's fast. He's a great route runner. He's got amazing hands get great athleticism. Can't stay healthy though. I doubt that. So I'm not going to defend that trade for one instance, because they should not have done that and walk ins take away the rest of that receiver class. They still shouldn't have done the trade. And then now I'm going to add that receive requests back in. Now, they really really really shouldn't have done that trade when Beckham and Jarvis Landry. And like a thousand other receivers had been productive in the league. Go after Watkins. Compare that. Trading up philosophy nine to four to draft a receiver now compare that treating down from ten all the way to twenty-seven even though you're trading down seventeen picks, which is a lot. You still ended up with Davis white? And you can argue the bills lost at trade. In fact, you probably showed considering the chiefs maybe got the best quarterback in the league off of it. But the bills were taking a quarterback there for writer on they weren't going to and they traded down and they got one of the premier corners in the league philosophically that trade worked out for the bills. It did for the chiefs too. But that's your it worked out for the bills. Trading down is the way to go. And this year, they might have an opportunity with that circling back to this report on the Denver Broncos that John Elway is smitten. With drew lock Missouri quarterback for the bills to have an opportunity here to trade down. And really get something substantial you need the quarterback to be in play because you can tree down. If somebody's looking for running out of running back, but a receiver or corner or a lineman or linebacker something like that you'll get something if you want to move down, and that's the position that the other team is targeting, but you really don't get that big hall and less. A team is really trying to get a quarterback for the most part. There are exceptions to that rule who's the saints pass rushers and Marcus Davin Davenport, Davenport, the saints gave up a first round pick. In addition to the pick. They traded up with to get him. That's an anomaly for the most part you're not going to get another first round pick unless the quarterbacks and play that happened with the troops. Trade bills move down to twenty seven they got a I the next year. What quarterback could be employees at nine? That's what we have to look at. We really have to explore. If these guys are actually going to be that good. We should be as interested in this draft class that we have maybe not necessarily the last draft class, but any of them before that because it's going to affect the bills. What other teams think of these guys Elway liking drew lock could mean the bills could trade down. If there is a team behind the Broncos that wants drew lock think about how easy that would be how easy that would be the cell. The bills team. May you go team B and say, we know you love drew lock the Broncos are probably taken one pick after us. You want him? Give us a first round pick an extra one here. Here's your knife pick. Here's your future quarterback. That's an easy sell. If the Broncos this. If this report is true. They love him. It's the first smoke of the seasons. The first quarterback smoke. Remember last year? How much of that? There was every other day every day every hour every hour. Yeah. There is a different report tying one team to a different quarterback the bills at one point in time in this kind of fueled the talk all last off season. It seemed like every week with the bills. There was a different report tying them to a different quarterback. Hey, they've really love Baker Mayfield. Hey, they talked to Josh Rosen. They flew out to see him. Hey, they flew out to see Sam darnold. It was really like the pro days. Like, it's kind of how we went through it. And then we explored what each quarterback would mean drafting here in buffalo. And if you remember correctly, this isn't part of the point. But when the Josh Allen conversation came up people didn't like that idea. So just remember that hindsight's twenty twenty I know you remember that vividly. Faithful brother. We dead. He's gone in sales. I mock draft. I remember last year that he put out and he had the bills taking Josh everybody blasted for it which is fair enough. Not like hitting the blessed sell for it. But blasted the idea, and I was one of them. We were proven wrong anyways. Give you enough tracker by staying close enough to the railway where I can just hop. Right. Back on the train not move into fast. Okay. Well, let's deviate a little bit here. Just a little bit of snark here. But it also as you as a tall shoot. Given John Elway track record is a general manager in picking and choosing starting nobody else. Gonna like drew lock. Right. If you're drew lock are, you actually worried before you even get drafted that he has an interest in you know, where that report baby came from..

"So for buffalo where they had the CBA mandated five day by week, and then the all-star break although Jack Eichel and Jeff Skinner set to take part in the all star festivities in San Jose next weekend. They'll have a long time off in a lot of this topsy turvy scheduled at Paul and I talked about in the opening segment. We'll come to fruition with buffalo playing two games back to back home for a day, and they get right into their seven game homestand, which again will start with the Chicago Blackhawks sabres and Canucks have taken the ice for warm ups. Let's head back out to Rogers arena. Where Paul is standing by. Paul is expected. Jeff Skinner out there for warm-ups. What did you see from the forward in a line combinations? Yeah. He looked fine. He played with his regular line with Eichel an Reinhardt. So. Do we have any problems did not take any line Russia's so things looking good for Skinner to be playing and just as expected the lineup. Staying the same from Wednesday, including marketing goal. Yes. Yeah. Lines defense, all my everything is the same as Wednesday. I will get the scratches in between the pipes and just a couple of minutes. But first ball, let's go by the numbers. It's brought to you by accident advisors. Take the next step for your financial future today. And I'll give you a hint is with buffalo playing Vancouver tonight. I went with something very eccentric. The number is sixty if you can guess what that's represents for the conducts franchise. The number is sixty how old are Landau kurtenbach. Oh, no. Sixty. Probably has something to do with the city sixty. That's a good. But I'll give you a hint. It's not to do with the deans somebody much older in the franchise history. Some I would have remembered when I was a kid growing up. It's a rookie Cedric. Also as a kid growing up on me think you're fifty nine so brave in the franchise came into existence. That would probably take us back to burry parallel bird. You're right Attleboro is the last can knock rookie hit sixty points. That's the record rookie record for scoring for season buried did that in ninety one ninety two good job while last year blockbuster came close faster had fifty five points. He was kind of on the same. Trajectory as Pederson is on right now. That's rounded with fifty five last year. So five point short Pederson who won't play tonight. And we'll get that in the scratches and the minute forty two points on the season. Twenty two goals. He has just been outstanding the first round pick fifth overall two years ago. He's he's been. A point the point game nearly for them this season. But you know, what I think Besser would have gotten any not gotten hurt. You're right. If you remember he got hurt at the end of the season. He couldn't finish up. So Addy knockout nerd, I think he probably would have gotten investors. One of those players to kind of like Pederson illustrate it's such a hot start went to the all star game. And really got a chance to show off his personality of personality a little bit in for a league, which is trying to grow stars not only with some of the top picks. But you know, out west where fans might not see the games all the time getting a chance to see these guys in the all star game setting or. East coast fan seen these players can only help. Yeah. Absolutely. Can only help and. That's the thing. I mean, the guy like Brock Besser a casual hockey fan out east may not even know who he is. And this is one of the great young stars this lead, or as you talked about better, sitter, even or that. If you want to go there. Sure there there's some young players on this team that at some other teams out west as I said if if it's just the casual fan is not totally into hockey really never even heard of. And I guess it's something as you mentioned in the opening segment fans in Vancouver hoping they get a top three pick this year. At tha that young stable of players that are now growing hopefully for fans going into something special there in Travis green the head coach trying to really mesh all these young players together. And one of them were going to see that in Thatcher Denko that we talked about earlier when we came on at nine o'clock, and he's going to be a net for them. He is the hope for them. He is the hope for the future, and he's going to be up here. Now. He's not going anywhere. And he's going to be the guy really might be getting an opportunity to take over the job. I mean, Mark Strom doesn't have great numbers this year. Nine hundred eight save percentage is horrendous. Really my opinion two point eight goals against average has nothing to be excited about. So, you know, I think that's your dump called a, you know, he's he's been brought along slowly people might remember if they follow world juniors. He was team USA's goalie. I believe it was back when Reinhardt play for Team Canada. If I'm not mistaken. But. That this is a guy that is the hope of their franchise. And you talk about bringing him along in in his growth as as a player. You know when you start the season this year under Nelson, the former sabre goaltender was back in Vancouver for another year. He was there last year traded over to Ottawa just a couple of weeks ago, creating some room for go now to get a chance to play. And that's why.

"Up late with us as we get. You started up hallway and belts pre-game show. Puck dropped just after ten o'clock tonight from Rogers arena out in British Columbia sabres will finish up their three-game western Canada road trip after tonight at home, and maybe some players even headed out on vacation as the team will have ten days off after tonight next game will be for the sabres on January twenty nine back to back games in Columbus in Dallas. So sabres get right back at it. At a back to back set before returning home in the month of February, which is very busy the sabers love their first home game in about three weeks on February first hosting the Chicago Blackhawks a lot of time between then and now sabres and Vancouver will meet tonight, we heard it in the update from Dan cave. Jeff skinner. This morning. Phil Housley saying he is a game time decision. But Skinner telling our Paul Hamilton the other members of the media after the optional skate today that he's good to go released feels he's ready to go tonight. So we'll see about half hour from now when the team takes the ice for warm ups, and we'll get Paul thoughts on that. And what the lineup will look like it. We'll check in with Paul in just a second last time these two teams met this is the final meeting between the sabres and the Canucks this season. It was the second game of the sabers ten game win streak buffalo defeated Vancouver. Four three in buffalo scoring twice late in the third. Jeff Skinner talked about a moment ago. He had his twelve of the year at that point Sam Reinhart tied it and the sabres would eventually win in shootout four three over the Canucks. So buffalo and Vancouver meeting for the final time here in the regular season. This year. Let's head out to Vancouver right now is Paul Hamilton is live with us out there. And hi, Paul. Hello. How are you? I'm great. How are you? I'm doing well ready for the CBA mandated by week in all star break after this trip. You know, I know the players enjoy a week with their families and.

"We need to find we need. Jeff skinner. He hasn't had Jack Eichel on his line for the last couple of years. He's played with good players by he hasn't had Jack. So we know we can score without a guy like Jack Eichel. You need a guy like Jeff Skinner to to definitely be your pivot while the big guys out. So we'll all the big guys out Skinner can take control and still be voted last man in to the all star game. And it would probably take that. Because I feel like he was a snub. I really do feel like he was a snub. So that that brings us to our buy sell trade presented by buffalo. Sports. Go to buffalo sports Rican by selling trade Nunu sports equipment, but you can also vote on this online. And don't be a Homer, be be honest. Do you think he was a snob? And I think a guy that came into this team with I don't wanna say limited expectations are low expectations. I think it was a huge question. Mark about what we were gonna get from Jeff Skinner. He was the youngest player to ever play in. All star game when he was a rookie if I'm not mistaken. Yeah. I truly feel like this is a year. And I know there's some good players out there, and there's some other options, but this year where I feel like he didn't deserve to be snubbed deserved a mess on this. This is a year where you could have taken to sabres and Skinner Nyquil absolutely could have been that. Yeah. I I'm I'm buying listen. I mean, you you talk about stubs we've got Mitch mariner. Brayden point Leon dry Seidel. Sean Monahan Matthew could Chuck. Dylan Larkin Morgan Riley. Brad Marchand max Domi Jonathan caves and co Petar Patrick line, a Marquesa stone. Elliot's. Len home. I mean, come on. I mean, there are a number of players out there that got snubbed there's a lot of talent in this league. And when we're talking about snub in today's game, there's going to be a lot of guys left out because. Third in the league in goals. How do you smell the guy who's third in the league in goals? How how do you say no to that? How do you know that? How do you just say, oh, it's a fluke. It's a fluke over he has twenty nine wrong Taveras making eleven million dollars savior. Kipruto set of thirty third. Is he fourth now? No he's tied for second. Make sure you're okay. In golf is he tied for third or second. Listen, man. I mean, just Skinner is played exceptionally well for the Buffalo Sabres there is absolutely no question that he has six game winning goals up to this point right now. But when you look at players like him that are in the league, there's a large number of players that are having absolutely fantastic seasons. Right after the game is about what what what every year we say, oh, what has to be up. What has to be up goals goals have to be up? You want more? You're gonna tell them how you gonna tell who's sitting here. Sorry tied for second. Dan, corrected thirties. One less doesn't deserve to go in ES fifty three points in thirty nine games. He doesn't deserve to go. That's what I thought. Maybe you know, what fifty thirteen goals, and he's getting all of his assists second. They're all secondary to put the puck and people's stick for tap ins brake pads and guys are chipping twenty three goals only three less than Skinner. He has fifty two points this year. I mean Leon dry Seidel fifty one points. I mean, there are so many great players in this game. And Jeff Skinner is is one of the reasons. One of the major reasons why the Buffalo Sabres or even in their position to be where they're at right now is Jeff Skinner is he an all star. He is arguably in that in that conversation. Do I think that they could throw them a bone because he's second in the league in scoring goals? Yeah. Probably could have I think he for what he's done for his hockey team. You could probably see Jeff Skinner getting getting annoyed. Odd to go there. But there is a termendous amount of high end talent that are not that's not going to the all star game. Yet. John. PD the name butchers out in full force. Someone else tweeted, hey, PD. Remember when you said the penguins weren't going to make the playoffs. And so member go to at w five fifteen you can vote on your buy sell trade. I'm just going through my tweets here. That's it. That's all. I got. Nick Caprio is coming up next. We'll ask him about the all-star votes and snobs and stuff like that. We'll also ask him about where our Tammy Pinera and could end up. He seems to have a bit of an inside track on that asking about the world juniors. But most importantly, we will ask him about the Buffalo Sabres, and how are they feeling north of the border with a team in buffalo? That's doing pretty well. We'll talk about that. Nick Caprio is coming up right here in skaters WJR five fifty an MSG w GR sports radio five fifty. When I had my brother, take me places. It was always like we have to get there early. So I can smoke a cigarette before we go inside I'm paying I'm a little sister doesn't stop.

"The moments in your life. Go forth to Firth, Jeff Skinner. You know, what happens when Jeff Skinner scores Brayton sabers, win hockey games. And and you get a dollar get a dollar. I got another dollar last night. I like your buddies common slight. I'm okay with this my buddy, Chris we he's in my season ticket group. I think he was at the game last night. He had tickets. So you know, this girl the overtime winner. He probably jumps up and cheers. And then sends me one dollar because every time Jeff Skinner scores. I get one dollar. How quick how quick after he celebrates? Do you think he pulls out his phone and send you that immediately? I can say that almost every one of those dollars is immediate. He's probably got his phone in his hand. And he's tweeting yourself that all sudden we scored okay, go to them. One dollar here you go. Thanks, Jeff Skinner sent. Yup. One dollar gr-. Best greatest bed. I've ever made in my life eight oh three oh, five fifty or headlines. The sabers win last night four three shootout on shootout overtime winners against the LA kings. They have five overtime wins overtime wins. Windsor more fun right now. I'm a big proponent of the three to one point system because I think regulation wins should be worth more. But when it comes to fun. Sudden death is sudden death overtime goals are fun. Savers have five wins this season in overtime ten in regulation and three in shootouts. But. So means eight wins after regulation and ten wins in regulation. No, sometimes the overtime win can be more fun. They rally from down two goals, which was super important. The captain puts the team on his back. They get some secondary scoring. It's ironic to say that the Jack put them on his back. But it's just the way that the game felt to me. Gear Gibson's and Larsen score in the same game. The Elias sports bureau says that the first time that's ever happened. I didn't check that is the first time it might be. They don't score them on now four. But hey, I'm glad those are those are the two to the longest tenured guys on the team. They had to have score in the same game before they had to of. I don't know. Even even the years that they were terrible mean, all you gotta do is is check Johan Larson's game logs. He has not scored on that many goals since becoming a member of the Buffalo Sabres. Well, let me just let me just say the last time the sabres played the kings was in LA, and there was a goal from big ocean from Larson and Gerguson everyone went wild because it's just like the three players. It's just kinda like they've been here. The longest stand. It's been awful with the non dislike they're the ones that don't often produce. But they actually scored it end yesterday Gergen's Dan Larson both scores. So so your headlines the the sabers win four three in. The overtime winner from Jeff Skinner Jack Eichel has a goal and an assist. He continues to light things up in the standings, the sabers sit in third place in the in the division and the top five teams in the division own playoff spots are now both wildcards currently held by Atlantic teams Boston and Montreal actually if you go further down Detroit is two spots out tied for ninth. So in this division is a strong division there. That's part of what kind of what scares me about the sabers going forward is you've got games against Montreal. They're good. Boston's good Toronto's. Good. Tampa's, good. If you crossed over and played more your games in the metropolitan might feel a little more confident. Basically what this what this comes down to is. Now that they've made it this far. I'm really invested in the making the playoffs. And if they don't we will all be devastated, right? This this looks like they could they could end their drought. And the question is like what's Jason bottles next move. There is a there's a. A trade rumor yesterday a love to talk about and Mike show the bulldog had a good conversation yesterday. When I when a pop it on about what the mission should be for for bilateral trying to figure out what his next move is. And so the trader more yesterday Campbell the hockey news suggests the sabers for trying to trade for Patrick Kane, which I have no interest in doing. I'm pretty sure if zero interest in that over the course of the reaction to that some said to me he's the final piece for a Cup contending team for this team. And I do not agree. This team needs more help on defense the guy on targeting more than anybody is a defenseman. Like, Brandon menteur. In fact, I would trade each and every one of the sabers upcoming three first round picks for a player like menteur. If Jason bottle can find a way to trade those three picks for young players that are not an it's very important that I make a distinction here. I don't mean trade all three to get one guy. I mean. I mean, this guy gets you this twenty four year old defenseman that this team doesn't wanna pay. This one gets you this twenty three year old defenseman. This one gets you this twenty five year old second line center that would fit in perfectly. I if Jason can turn those three draft picks into players that are costs controlled and helped his team not just now. But in the future, I'm signing up for all three. I don't need a draft pick this year. The lottery if the blues have a lottery pick the savings don't even get that traffic until next year. Okay. Now, I'm down to the sharks is going to be a playoff team pick and the sabres. That's I guess that's the tough one. Because what if you just missed know, you don't want to give away that lottery ball, you might lottery protected, but maybe I'm getting ahead of myself here anyway, eight oh three zero five fifty other headlines. I just blasted right through to talk about the sabers here. There's a funny story from the raiders the Oakland Raiders apparently Jason Cole had this formerly of Yahoo. And currently of let me find it because I tweeted it, and I I didn't exactly check where he might still be at Yahoo. Jason Cole editor in chief of fan, site dot com. He says that the raiders a high ranking raiders official says there's no way the team plays in Oakland next year. The twenty thousand nine season the city filed a lawsuit today and a source says there are five or six cities the team will consider playing before they moved to Vegas and the Vegas stadium won't be ready. So Oakland files a lawsuit in the raiders are saying they're gonna play somewhere else next year five or six cities have been considered or will be considered including some that already have NFL teams. So it's kind of like which team wants a roommate? I don't think it's going to be buffalo. I would imagine they'd stay on the west west coast. Maybe San Francisco, I mean that sounds right right next door that would make sense. The league would have to do them a favor and not schedule them on the same week, of course, which could be done, but that's one of the headlines out there. What else? Send him to a soccer stadium. No, right. Yeah. Melvin Gordon gametime decision against Kansas City and those your sports headlines next update on the way out the update top of the hour eight oh three oh, five fifty one eight eight eight fifty to five fifty if you'd like to join us. What what do you what do you think about the sabers in? Are you like me where you're happy? You're over the moon that they're competitive and good and they are in the mix to make the playoffs. But also, I know you've got some people who think that means you're pessimistic. Now, I think it just means you're evaluating. I'm evaluating this team. I'm looking at what they do. I'm trying to find ways to get them a second line center. So a little bit of that burden comes off a Casey middle set who can they get that would be a second line center for this team. I wanna find a way to get more good young defenseman on this team. Maybe Lawrence pilot blossoms into something that is a a nice find, you know, he's still here for now when scandal gets healthy and Hon wickets healthy and McCabe, and Casey, and what happens to pilot when they're all healthy. Does he? Stay here or do they send him down because finger quotes it's a numbers game. These are tough decisions that the sabers will have to make eight oh three. Oh, five fifty is our phone number the text line. I'll read a couple of texts the trade. Rumors crazy far too many savers named. I don't think Cain is the answer that Cain one. If you missed it Ken Campbell. The hockey news says that the sabers should trade for Patrick Kane. And that they should trade away in the process. Sam Reinhart Jason palm Advil. I'm gonna forget all the pieces Brayton. So let me know if I forget, anybody got the audio. Okay. Let's do this. But so now what you're if you're the Chicago Blackhawks you have to start thinking about, you know, do we tear this thing down? And if we do how we do it. And I think the perfect way to do that would be to trade Patrick Kane to his hometown Buffalo Sabres. Mammoth deal for as I said Sam Reinhart Jason palm and Ville kopech allow Khanin Brennan, Google Victor. All listen who's appointed game player in the American Hockey League and three first round picks. Wow. I don't know if you need for the first round. No. Because you do you do because you're you're trading day upon getting rid of that salary because you have to make room for Patrick Kane. Right. So see the thing is in buffalo wouldn't really miss them that that badly 'cause they'd be giving up their own tech. They've also got San Jose's first round pick this year from the evanger Cain trade. And they've got Saint Louis first round pick from the rhino Riley. Now that tick crazily enough that pick was lockout per start. Not lock up protected but lottery protected. It's it's gonna be a top ten pick. So that the two thousand twenty so now Chicago has their own pick plus buffalo, plus San Jose's this year. And they've got their own pick. And Saint Louis is next year. It like they can they can absolutely like within the space of two years completely restock their system. Yeah. So that's Ken Campbell hockey news. The best point I saw about this was that if it seems like a good idea for the Blackhawks to stock their system. It also seems like the sabre should use all those pieces to Dr system. And again, like, I'm okay with trading away all three of those picks. But not I don't want them to do. The old all depends on the deal doesn't everything. Depend on the deal. I want Brandon menteur or the equivalent whoever that is Anaheim would they trade him? What's the price? You know? If you don't know who he is. He's a good young defensemen that Anaheim. I don't know. I've I've had an eye on Brandon menteur for years because he just looks good. I like Shaef Theodore, they let him go to Vegas, and whatever. I think this team needs a couple more defensemen. They need they need to ultimately upgrade back there. I don't know where it comes from. It's all about pondering Jason bottles next move. What's he gonna do for? Now. You can just let it simmer. The thing about if you let this team play the whole year like this. You're getting valuable experience for your young kids. You're leading the group the the room grow together and just kind of know find its way, I don't think it's necessarily a requirement that they make any sort of major splash. You know the deadline. You might like to see something to try and help them get in not just for your players to get playoff experience. But for your fans to which would be great. But. I don't need it on welcome it. But I don't need it. And I think he he might be in the same boat. You look around at the landscape and say when two teams, and this is the point about Ken Ken Campbell hero that trade is preposterous in the sabers should not make that trade. His point is simply regarding teams that are going to start thinking that way in Chicago is one of them the kings from last night kings are another one they've got to find a way to restock because they're a mess from cap standpoint. From an age standpoint, they're old and overpaid. And the Blackhawks are in a similar boat. And the kinda got just retool and start again, that's the that's the cycle. Sometimes you you go to the top and you end up back at the bottom on your way back to the top again. It's just so hockey goes eight oh three oh, five fifty or go to Springville talk to Eric. Good morning. Eric, you're on WJR. Jerry. Absolutely improved that Leon goalscoring goaltending. Great. They're just still concerned about their toughness that you will their strength on the flyers went to hitting the checking in the second period of game Saturday, a lot of turnovers retreated. Trouble getting zone, though. Great offense of ability. Those guys though to make a run in the on. Well, I I mean, I would I would not necessarily. I mean, do you want strong players? Sure. I mean, when you say tough guys, I don't think you mean fighters, I mean, guys that are tough to deal with and sure I I could use a couple more of those as long as they can score. I'm looking for scoring. They're not a great scoring team. They're definitely not a great offense of team. They are near the bottom of the league generating scoring chances. So you you want toughness what I want is a second line. I'd like you. Maybe you want a better fourth line. I'd like a better second line. Maybe you maybe you sorry, Eric, you might mean guys that are second-liners that are tougher. Sure. But as many jackals and Jeff Skinner's as possible, and I don't know how tough they are Eichel's physical game is definitely I think on a level that it's never been before. But there are a lot of different ways to be tough Jeff Skinner's tough because he goes to the front of the mental the time Sam Reinhart does that as well. It goes to the front of all the time. I mean, but would you call him tough? You've got Rasmussen crystalline is a tough player. But maybe you want someone that makes decisions with the puck or that is better than his own end. I mean, he's good. He's got decent..

"The first thing that jumped out the young corn, and sort of the talent they had in in in their young core of players, and I think that getting the opportunity to post players what really any player will really want. And then I think after that you kind of try and do a little bit of homework where you probably have some friends or or maybe friends of friends that have played in in different places. And for me, everyone I talked to everyone I asked about buffalo had nothing but positive things to say about dog innovation ownership the fans the community. Sabres forward. Jeff Skinner on with Howard and Jeremy yesterday morning. That's on-demand WJR five fifty dot com. He is right now the subject of both of the biggest questions with the buffalo. Sabres right now two biggest questions maybe the only two questions right now with the sabres one. Are they really this? Good and two when are they going to sign? Jeff Skinner long-term. Yeah. Can they signed Jeff Skinner long-term finally for those? I got I got a fun little one liner. I said it to you off the air. But no actually said it with you on nightcap the tank worked. Because Zach Dalby was one of the people that he roomed with when he started in Carolina, and he mentioned good things about buffalo and Dalby as we know was part of the tank team. So what does that mean? Like I line on the. Yeah. Was I mean means the tank worked we landed Eichel with it. And it helped us get Jeff Skinner to say. Yeah, I'll take all wave. My no trade for buffalo there. It is. It's worth twice. We got two players out of it. Boom. Does the fact that he was not traded for much from Carolina. The sabers didn't give out much. Does that does that make you think any different way about them being able to sign him long-term? No, not at all. I think it was more or less. The fact that his relationship had soured and Carolina, and therefore they didn't value him as much as they should have seem Montreal with Alex Couchepin, yuck. Oftentimes on the trade bloc. But it wasn't going to be for like they weren't asking for much granite. Max Domi has had a fantastic season. But I feel like Montreal could have gotten better for Alex couch. My my my only worry is. There's only two reasons why he would have gone for. So little one of them would have been Carolina. Just does not know what they're doing that. They didn't understand how valuable he was that. They just wanted him off the team, and they didn't really care what they got back. Didn't they not have general manager at the time? I don't know.

"The official telephone system provider of the Buffalo Sabres and next Steve up the official business communication provider of the Buffalo Sabres. Well, maybe statistically, I guess you could say yes typically, but there's a discussion now about where are the jackal. Jeff Skinner Jason Palmdale line ranks amongst the best in the league, Nick. And statistically over the last month. They actually have been just as good as anybody. Clearly, the biggest reason why this team is playing well or those three, but especially for palm and Ville that's been a big a big bonus to have him. Contribute and what Eichel and Skinner. And I guess Palmdale to just the chemistry between those three. It's been fun to watch funds and understand. It's almost like, you know, even in games when when I'm not in the in the arena watching in the office those three start going off the ice. And you kind of just stand out of your chair a little bit kinda wanna get with the television to see what's going to happen. It's been a lot of fun to watch those three kind of come together really since October twentieth. I think is when they really started playing together on a consistent basis. But I mean going back to the game in Montreal. The play the Jack Eichel had in the face off to win the draw and then go around and all and then just feed it to Skinner. I mean, it's unbelievable. What what he was able to do? And just to know we're Jeff was going to be to give them a chance to tie the game. I mean, it's almost like they share brain all three of them really with with knowing exactly where they're going to be when they're going to be there. And and how they have to deliver the puck to make sure that they're able to finish their chances. I mean, you talk about having. Not just your top line. Really? Your top six being able to contribute. I mean, it's I mean, it's it's night and day from what we've been able to see it. It's contagious. Right. The the rest of the team is following their lead. And having a line that wants to take control allows the other pieces to fall into place into now seeing some of that secondary scoring that is so important when you score six goals in a win you need other lines to be contributing as well. And I think that's part of the side effects of those three playing so well over the last couple of weeks is it allows everybody else you're starting to see Sam Reinhart come around a little bit. It's it's been a struggle to start the season. There's no doubt. But the last couple of games you're seeing signs that he's getting to where he was in the second half of last year. And I have to think that that's part of the reason why so Eichel has nineteen points in sixteen games. A lot of those assists. Four goals, fifteen assists. A lot of the sisters setting up the two leading goal getters. And that's Pomodoro who has eight and Skinner who leads the. Team with eleven Skinner's on pace for fifty six goals and on pace to definitely have more than a point a game here if they're able to keep this pace up here when reporters were meeting with Jack Eichel the other day before that Montreal game asked about only having four goals is he at all concerned about that. And I like what he said Nick about how if I'm involved in the scoring if I'm doing the setting up the finishing. He goes I'd like to think myself as more of a playmaker. Anyway, I mean, we all would view maybe Connor mcdavid is the best player in the NHL. Maybe and argue Sidney Crosby, of course for a decade long, and they're not necessarily the pure goal scorer that maybe like an Ovechkin player is and Gretzky. Let's face it. The greatest player ever. Maybe the people would view he was always more viewed as a playmaker. So to me, I'm not that concerned. Of course, you'd like to see Eichel's goals be at a higher level. But if he's going to be involved in setting up goals at this pace. I don't think that you can argue anything that there's anything wrong with that. Early in the season. I think myself included, I think a lot of people got caught up in the Austin Matthews was tearing it up. He had ten goals in the first two weeks later. Yeah. I know everybody's like, well, where's the scoring from Jack and to see him facilitate? I think being being playmaker is is his game to set up other guys because he look he's going to draw a lot of attention anyway. But even if he's getting pucks on that guys are there and in position to kind of make plays either. Catch a rebel Jeff Skinner did when when Jack had had to slap in the face off circle. Being a playmaker. I think is fine. Now, if this was losing happened in the past, I think, maybe there'd be more of a conversation about wise, Jack kind of living up to that ten million dollar a year contract so to speak, but look they're winning. He's he's making plays guys are scoring. I think they're okay. You would like to see it even out a little bit more. I think that's a fair thing to say, but with twenty points nineteen points in at this point of the season. I mean, it's hard to argue with with anything that lines putting out. Our sabers roundtable here going on our Paul William belts pre-game show. Buffalo and Vancouver. Coming up just a little after one Nick Philip hausky from channel four Pat Mella Carlson WJR, I'm Brian Cosio. We'll still here from Phil Housley. Evan rodriguez. Sam Reinhart all coming up part of our pre game interviews, but we still got another five minutes or so left here on our roundtable. So let's talk about the goaltending situation. Here Carter Hutton going into day against me in coober Lena's Cellmark had played well, obviously in his last couple starts. He's let in some more than in his previous starts in which was the shutout against Arizona. How do you think? Phil Housley handing the goaltending situation. Nick were we'll start with you here. I think it's good. I mean, I think the game against Montreal was kind of one of those fluky goes where I think you mentioned it there. There wasn't a lot of defense that was being played. And it was almost like I tweeted this out during the game. There was more like a shot tutor was in that so to speak with just the little holes that you had had to get the puck through because everything was was gone and left and right. I mean Carter, and obviously he's the guy who's Br. To be the mentor for Lena's kind of show them the ropes and kind of help prepare him for those number one opportunities. I mean, we this is gonna struggle here. And there I think that was at least my expectation was there'd be good games and there'd be games were were. He would struggle. I mean, I think Phil's handled. It the way it should be. You ride Carter heightened you. Let him get the majority of the games you sprinkle in Lena's here. And there let them get a home start every now and again, just to get more comfortable at home. But I think Phil's handled it pretty well. Yeah. We've talked about on pregame before if if you're nitpicking maybe you would have wanted all Mark to start one of those first four home games. But it's hard to argue with the way Carter Hutton played that might have been his initial plan. It's just that Hutton played. So well, it was tough to take him out. How do you take them out of the lineup? What he had so much time in between games. And then on the west coast trip where they were a little more compact, and that could have been to the pressure of us of him feeling what we always talk about is. We can't be in a hold of start. We can't be in a hold the start. So if Hutton's playing good, I don't want to mess with it. You look at the rest this month. Maybe it helps that all Mark hasn't played as much you're able to mix him in more because in two weeks that scheduled becomes really tough. Once you get past next Friday Saturday. It seems like every time the sabres played their bunched up with back to back games. And you're going to need the fresh goaltender coming off the bench. Yeah, they've got after this upcoming week the final three weeks in November each week has a three and four nights in there. And one of those weeks the thanksgiving week to actually play four and six in there too. So and three sets of back to back. So you're right. I'm sure for those that want to see all Mark play more. The calendar itself is gonna probably dictate that let's get a thought here just on the defense itself. Ross was Darlene. Of course, coming in with all the fanfare he seems to be getting better and better every game. Yeah. Really? I mean, I figured there'd be a learning curve. Like there is with any sport with with with young kids. And I think the expectations were maybe a little high to start the year in terms of what he was going to be able to do. I mean, we've all seen the dangles. We we've seen the highlight reel from from Sweden. But you know, I think you know game in and game out. He's finding his way he's gaining that confidence that you want to see and he's also throwing around his body, which I think is maybe an underrated part of his game. So to speak he's knocking guys off puck. And he's not he's not afraid of making contact. I'm I like what I've seen from him so far. Oh, there's no doubt. And I think it's just gonna get better as the season goes on. So for a young kid who's playing as many minutes as he is. You're right. He's going to struggle. And I want them to learn from those steaks and let Phil Housley let him work through it. And being a defensive guy himself. He knows how to coach the most out of the defense. And I want to see how he works with with him as the season goes on the up and down start for restless line in this year is definitely one that sabre fans are loved to debate. And it was I thought symbolic of his season of what we even saw in that whole sequence of the game winning goal. I'm watching him get caught up in the zone up on the wall. And I'm sitting here saying, no. You can't you can't. And it's three on three hundred one back the other way from Montreal. And somehow he gets the puck on his stick. And then I'm in studio, and I don't know if Dan caves with me or somebody else in there saying get to the bench get to the bench because he was exhausted to try to fight back to get within the play, which I wanna give them credit for. So we fires on net, and it goes in. And now he's the hero like hits been an interesting season for Rasmus. No doubt. I shouldn't say Dolly crystalline. Yes, it's been up and down season. I think for the veteran defenseman in general on this team. I think about a guy like Nathan who was back in the lineup the other night and assignment in in the preseason and thinking all right. Maybe he's turned a corner from from last season. I don't think he played as poorly as many people thought, but you know, the maybe the second goal for Montreal. He gets caught at the blue line and Jack Eichel has to try and hustle back. When he had no coverage behind them. Those those placed at the savers have been hanging there goaltender out to dry within for Dalian. It all comes in that same conversation. When you've got other defensemen on the ice that are making mistakes. He's had to cover up for a lot of those things as well..

"Call two four nine twenty two twenty two payrolls for Jeff Skinner. Hey Brayton on ask me. How my Jeff Skinner bet is going. Oh, how is your Jeff Skinner back? It's going pretty good. I make a dollar every time. Jeff Skinner scores a goal. So you got eleven dollar. I got eleven dollars in the Bank. And what was it? You had to give to give two dollars. Fifty cents for every Vlad Guerrero junior home run, right? So guess who is cashing that? You are this guy. Right. He and you're probably going to be cashing in a lot of coaching kitschy. It's nice to have a dollar a goal. It's probably a nicer if you're Jeff Skinner knowing how much each of those goals is going to end up. Earning you, right. Jeff Skinner a pair of goals. Jackal pair of assists on those goals and the sabres beat Montreal six to five in overtime harassment's wrist line. And the game winner in overtime is buffalo stays in the eight spot in the Eastern Conference standings, the wildcard buffalo is in second place in the wild card race appoint up on Philadelphia. They are eight six to forty nine and forty nine on goals. Foreign goals against got a good tweet about that that this from Hank. He writes in it last year through sixteen games. The sabers were a minus twenty on goal differential just to give you an idea no team in the NHL Eastern Conference. Let me check the Western Conference. Currently no team in the NHL. L A minus twenty last year through sixteen games the sabers reminds twenty now they're even not surprising, right? Last year was a disaster and this year. I'm just screaming to the to the mountaintops. That mediocrity is a wonderful. Welcome change. They are very average. And they're hopefully going to get better as they continue to build. But right now put up a banner that says, we're average has it's great. Eight oh, three zero five fifty one eight eight eight five fifty to five fifty Brian in one of the more encouraging things about the teams the even strength scoring where do we rank? That's something that I always look for you know, when we talk about. I look for regulation and overtime wins. Mainly regulation wins the sabers have you know in overtime win whenever you take it. But I think you really get judged by regulation and overtime wins. When it comes to shot share at five on five the sabres eleventh. And that is a monstrous move. Eleventh when you do it within one goal their ninth. That is unlike this the leap forward that this team is made from a possession standpoint. And the ability to score is they needed it badly. How are they on the back end? Well, maybe some things to continue to work out. But it's just it's just such a welcome change. Anyway, we're here in the middle of the headlines NHL standings, as I mentioned, the sabers sit in eighth place for those of you who left hockey for a few years, the new format is that each division gets three teams in and then there are two wild card spots for the rest of the teams right now Boston and buffalo hold on the playoff spots. And if the playoffs started today the sabers would lay Tampa in the first round Tampa who was twelve three and one and in town on Tuesday, the NHL standings with buffalo in eighth place..

But despite the slide the sabers have been generating chances and having the puck and possession at a high level including the line of Jason Palmdale. Jeff Skinner and Jack Eichel Advil is an unbelievable story. But it is always nice to be the third guy on alive when you've got Jacqueline Jeff Skinner, those making magical evening long, and I would suspect that Bill went cooler got injured for a couple of weeks, or whatever the case was buffalo could probably move another guy up onto that line in similar results. Johnny Manziel's trade to the CFL changes his path to playing time

"Dropping them in, on your third line that's fair spot for them, to sit, on your roster and so what does this mean, for the, sabres like I I don't look at them and say. Well now a playoff team this is you know, it's a it's a climb to get there but you know if all these things kind of fall into place, you know comes in and has a good year middle steps you know, productive rookie Darlene is what everybody thinks Darlene can be You know. May, maybe they are in contention for playoff spot I think there's you know there are a. Lot of questions that, are going to go into that but if you're in the position of the sabers like opportunity is there to get somebody like, Skinner who's gonna make, you more competitive give you a chance of, being in, the playoff hunt and file means do it you know you kind of been rebuilding for a. While now at some. Point you've got to take that next step and. If you know if Jeff Skinner gives you, a shot at at that this year, then terrific. If things really, go sideways in the next season doesn't go. Very well well then you worry about moving Jeff Skinner. Before the deadline and trying to recoup some assets? But in, the meantime I think this gives the, a, much better chance to. Be competitive, in in, for all, the reasons that you you pointed. Out whether it's Skinner trade the Subotica coming in the rookie coming, in like, I I have to assume that the sabres are, going to, be better than they were last season I just thought I am ready to put them on a playoff team would you assume they're. Better than Ottawa I shouldn't laugh so readily I'm afraid I'm afraid for the way things are going for the Senate and. Not just for next season I don't know what is going to happen to them long term because So they for example they signed Mark stolen. He's probably the, best player on their roster but they started to a one year deal so he'll be unrestricted the ago. I guess they still have Eric Carlson on the roster so he's actually No one expects him to be there long-term either it's, like well those guys aren't going to be there how are you gonna convince anyone. To. Play there, presumably presumably, they'll have to throw. Money at people to to do it but, yeah it's not looking good in the nation's. Capital of Shane I think is. Set to be a free agent after next year to. Isn't it yeah He. Is Yeah they're they're looking at their three best players are signed through next season in in not. Any further so They're in a really tough spot right. Now TSN Scot Colin there with Mike shope and the bulldog I was mentioning all of those things that are kind of going, on right now as, we watched the show Jeff Skinner's a saber the, bills are. Practicing. Your field Conor McGregor. Returning you forgot Johnny Manziel is playing football Right now is it since two thousand fifteen, but it actual. Football yes it is you wanna why because these games count these games count for, something not preseason especially at the hall of fame game they don't award you something for winning the preseason maybe, they, should they run, it the line of scrimmage before the play oh, my God. How. Deeper those end zones Tonight ball, it's a nice. Ball their desks but again Soli What's your problem with Canadian? Football there's a. Lot I just mentioned three things all at. Once it's funny is there's a legal motion on every, play but it's legal for as many as three, players but what is even Thanks The goal posts are in the front which allows you to run into, them but you, know you don't have this in. CFL you don't have what is the? Cowboy we're gonna pause thirty seconds because this, this this guy in the offense flinched and he somehow gained a competitive advantage by flinching because the NFL determines that is some sort of competitive advantage that we have to flag the other team for. The there's parts of Canadian football that, actually if you think about, it like maybe that's kind of where the NFL's going wider fields more spread out of fighting for more. Offense I was about to, say so there'd be, less you, know had, hits big hits and, stuff but then here they are because they're in Canada and they're. Fighting so there's that this is normal for Canadian sports. Hockey I guess football and I'd like their end zones are shaped. Weird the field goal poster at the front of the end, zone which means you could run into. Them three players get to run at the line of furniture for the ball. "The bulldog and happy to, welcome on the AT and t. hotline Sean Lahey from NBC sports and pro, hockey talk Welcome to, the show Sean is nice to talk to. You Hey thanks for having me so What's happening here are we are we done? For the off season is it is? It over as max Petra ready going to be a Canadian is air Carlson. Going to be a Senator Jeff Skinner? Gonna stay in Carolina like? Where, where are we at here yeah it seemed like in the what the, week or two after the draft. The Carlson talks heated up there some patchy ready talking. Just for whatever reason things called and now it's just awfully, quiet? All of the GM's agents right their cottages and join us for the. Summer and we'll see what happens but you have. You call some still out there seems. Like he's treated at some point who knows if he's going to, go to tapa, Dallas, and Skinner his name. Is The last two seasons is it almost seems like that's, an? Inevitable move and seeing especially with the the Canadians coming out and saying. That they're not going to offering the extension which. Is kind of a weird way to. Do that publicly but his time in Montreal seems pretty come to, an end so Team wants to get a, guy who was not yet thirty we give you a twenty twenty five, goals year. On the wing there's definitely some play options out there, I wonder, about him even if the the thing that scared me off of him Patrick ready when we were here busy talking about Ryan Reilly being traded and Patrick maybe being. The, return in that was the specter, of a contract extension his age I would be worried about that because I, feel like you know it's not going to be that long before you start. Regretting that, in the sabers, have, got not a great track record guys on long-term. Deals that are aging callup also Matt. Molson come to mind immediately and but I wonder if getting him without an extension, and if you're good I'm thinking of the sabres here and you ride with him through the, year if you're you're doesn't go well you spit him at. The deadline is a rental I wonder if that's a an. Idea Hey, it's, worth it's worth an opportunity to look at for. Jason just to see what the prices Given how everyone knows that he's gonna get traded Mark version Billy doesn't have to watch your power. There as far as China up the price? On, because everyone knows he's gonna betray at some point so if you're in the price is right. Yeah it's worth taking, a shot at them to, just kind of your, bursting bear on the offense and like you. Said if, it doesn't work, out you not the deadline you, know he's gonna be worth getting back some chore Bassett a drastic or maybe a prospect. Or whatever or you maybe you try and convince them to see, likes there in buffalo to stay, he sees the things you're kind. Of trending. In, the final training light direction convention to this. Day but he's gonna, turn thirty November he's chill yeah I'm sure looking at a longer term deal and like you said those those guys wants to hit thirty especially on things kind of starting nosedive offensively, and, he's not. Quite the elite status player like Crosby mcdade where you can expect a high level Thirties but I it's worth a shot. Especially if you're the sabers just trying to build on the, excitement that's headings in the season with Donald lean and all the moves that they made. Support the summer right and they still need some scoring I mean, it didn't take long piecing lines, together for whatever it's worth for. Someone who. Works, on the radio to do that to pencil. Like page Thompson into a top six spot in he's played, forty games in the NHL like I don't think you need any more evidence than that but the sabres still needs him scoring on the wings Yeah that would mean that that's I think the addition of cars fury will help but he's, got some speed, how he should look pretty nice. Next to Jack Eichel and scored was a, huge issue not only wasn't goals puck at Ebro net, scoring goals was huge issue for the sabres last year Help on the wings in your, top six and, shortly both be a. Leadership in, that room with that let's let's four young guys young enough for coming..

"Oh five fifty eight eight eight five fifty to five fifty can tweet the guy to my left at craig reveal fifty two you can tweet myself at beside craig but what are you looking at i mean i think we all have bottles got to have a number in his head he's got have a number in his head and he's got to have an idea in his head of what you brought this up before the show he's going to have to want to know what sam's looking for before he hits july one before he gets to the draft and try to move players don't you think i mean if you're gonna if you're going to bring a guy like skinner and don't you want to know what you're paying sam or does it not matter i think that they both go hand in hand you have to understand what year what your length is and what your term is or the dollar signs for sam before you can kind of start to tinker around with you know enquiring players like a possible jeff skinner i would love to see adjust skinner in sabres uniform i think that he's still an extremely easy young guy he's twenty six years old he's got a lot of hockey left in him just turned twenty six he had fifty points last year twenty four goals in what i would consider maybe a little bit of an off year goal wise because the year before he had thirty seven the year before he had twenty eight he's out of thirty three thirty one goal season this this player is shown that he can put the puck in the net and you could just imagine a jeff skinner playing alongside a jackal in a sam reinhart something like along that line and that is that now you're talking big boy hockey on a first line that is a legit i line but how much do you pay guy like sam on his second contract every player at twenty one or twenty two it's not what they're going to be twenty five or twenty six and in five years we don't know where the game a hockey is going to go the.
