"Jody bars reporting helped raise awareness about curtis and jennifer's murders. The police were seemingly unable to make any progress still today. No one's been arrested. Kirk james family have no more answers today than they had. When we rolled out of pike county for the last time and aired the the final broadcast into this case from your extensive investigation seems as though investigators know what might have happened to curtis and jennifer and who may have done it. Why do you think there has been an arrest. That's my question. I don't know why there hasn't been an arrest. I don't know the investigators just didn't have enough. I don't know what else was needed to finish investigation. You've got people in these statements telling stories that you fill out what happened when you know the people who were adelphi in these statements as having gone to this murder seeing committed these crimes. It came back home. So i don't know why. Or what or where. Investigators art at this point in time. This is where fifteen years down the road. No arrests so as far as families concern and i talked to them regularly still today i mean they they feel like this is a miscarriage of not even justice. They didn't get that far. It's just an incomplete investigation. You just hope one day you'll be able to finish the story because at this point two people are dead in. It appears that whoever did this is you know gotten away with murder but that won't be the case fangio. Montgomerie has anything to do with it. You're still on this mission to get answers to get justice and also to make sure that it doesn't happen to another family right. I got my kids up. Were they were a little bit. I had a little bit of time on my hands. So i started going full force with getting hopper case out into the public. Speaking i went to the prosecutor spoke with him a few times. I went to the sheriff's we had an interim sheriff. When mr reader got suspended we're told just helps coming and it never does and i noticed that it's always when i get really rowdy. Squeaky wheel gets the most grief. When i start squeaking. I'll get a phone call. Hey just hang on. I'm going to figure out and nothing happens in. We're tired of it. That's like the most emotional about is just feeling like nobody cares. And i can't imagine what curtains anyth- mom their mothers feel like. That's another thing that puts the fire under by ass. It's never it's not going to bring them back. You'll always have a hole in your heart from that. But i would love to see someone get arrested for curtis in jennifer's murder and get prosecuted and that we get justice more information and the case relevant photos. Follow us on instagram at. "Pike and massacre returned to county a production of iheartradio and katie studios. You've got all these scenarios in your head. I think this may have happened her navy. They did this. Every family of a murder victim does that you lay in bed and you think what happened. Why did they do this to did this. There's someone out there roaming around that killed two people that you could be standing beside in the grocery store and scary is the pike massacre returned to pay county season two episode ten hopper road. I'm courtney armstrong a television producer at katy studios stephanie. Lie decker and jeff shane over the course of producing this series. We've spoken to several members of the road and family because of a gag order and impending trials for the wagner family. They have been unable to go on record but earlier this year. One member of the family told us that her friend a pie. Tin resident named angie montgomery wanted to share a story about her own family and a loss they had suffered some years back. Coincidentally that same week a listener wrote in asking about that exact case so for this bonus episode as gear up to the season finale. Next week we decided to look into it. Angie perhaps more than most people can empathize with with. The roads are going through when we spoke to angie. She had just heard about jake. Wagner's plea deal in the road murder case. This news hit angie especially hard. She told us that she immediately reached out to her. Rodent family friend. I remember texting her just telling her. I was sorry that had to hurt so bad knowing that you sat down to eat christmas dinner with these people. You went to church with these people. So i can't imagine finding that out. Angie reflected back on the day. The bodies of eight members of the rodent family were found. I think we lost our innocence. That day we lost our wholesomeness our trust. We lost everything it was like you weren't a days this is happening. Your like where am i living. What's going on here. it's crazy angie's bewilderment is no doubt informed by her own tragic loss ten years before the road and family was gunned down. Her cousin curtis francis and his fiancee. Jennifer forget were also murdered and pike county. Angie spoke with producer. Chris graves about it. I know this probably hard. But can you describe for me. What happened to curtis jennifer on december. Ninth two thousand. Six curtis at his friend's house visiting he had been drinking that day and having a little bit of fun and jennie had came down and told him that he needed to get home and he laughed about ten thirty that night and went home and his mother talked to him before he went to bed. Belt midnight. I think in jenny had talked to a friend. I think about eleven thirty so they were going to bed and the next day. Nine one one call came in that genie's.

"As part of his reporting pilcher. Track down michael moran to get his side of the story moran vehemently denied all the allegations about being involved in any prostitution or sex trafficking rings up. Talk to michael moran three times at length and we. I talked to him i said. Are you a sex trafficker. People have said your sex trafficking it says here in this affidavit your sex trafficker what do you say to that. She tried to play the dumb country lawyer. The following is an audio recording from that interview. With michael moran. I don't even know. What a kimmy. The definition of a sex trafficker. So then we get all these women lined up. We come back home and say okay. We've got these women now saying that you're the guy and he says okay and then he was more angry. He would not go on camera with a second time during one conversation pilcher. S moran specifically about making. Lancaster moran denied being her pimp or being involved in any of that kind of activity but when james pilcher brought up the possible whereabouts of megan lancaster. He got a shocking response. Pilcher related the story to producer. Jeff shane a joke with me. Hey maybe she's in my basement. Maybe she's in my backyard. He thinks that the joke because he knows what the rumors are late. What you so. You asked him directly about it absolutely. I said you have anything to do with meghan lancaster and he said no. But you can check my basement. everybody else wants to. You can check out back. He said i. I've invited the cops in to take a look. Well i'm not going to surmise whether he's trying to get away with anything because i i don't know whether or not he had anything to do with her disappearance. I really don't are reporting. Didn't lead down those path. But he had this attitude that he thought he was smarter than you that he thought he was smarter than anybody. And i think what probably from my reporting in my history on all this is a. I read a lot of stuff about him and leading up to them and i'd see stories here and there but nobody but nikki blankenship kept adam. Nobody kept on him. And i can tell you that we never went away. The photographer person that i worked with was always in the courtroom blogging. Blogging him. That she was there was always taking pictures or getting video of him in action in the courtroom. We never went away. In twenty twenty authorities finally made their move phillies rated. The home of a well known lawyer suspected of running a national sex trafficking ring for years march twenty fifth state and local police raid. Michael moran's house with a search warrant in dave used. the attorney general was personally present for that enforcement. When you get the state attorney general showing up to serve a search warrant. You know that there are some very important people watching this. I'm looking at the story. I did and you can see. Iran is sitting on his porch in his stocking feet while police are searching his office. Slash house now. The thing you've got to remember too which is interesting is brick two story house. It sits on the corner right across from the courthouse and right across catty-cornered from the local prosecutor's office. So he literally can walk back and forth from his house. Slash office to the courtroom and walk right in front of the prosecutor's office. Just seven months later it all came crashing down for michael moran longtime defense lawyer and former city councilman has been arrested in an alleged sex trafficking operation friday october. Twenty third to twenty twenty state and local police teamed up in arrested. michael moran. this comes nearly seven years. After that initial affidavit issued by the da for nikki blankenship. It was a day that marks the culmination of years of tireless work and a victory for dozens of portsmouth women. When my father was arrested october twice he was arrested on the eighteen charges that included sex trafficking racketeering telling 'em promoting prostitution when that came out. That was a real exciting day for me. I was screaming iran screaming. Because i worry that no one was ever gonna check. No one was really ever gonna look into it. I really worry. I know that the cincinnati inquirer they had to do their own investigation but it was approximately a year before they started releasing things and when they release things. I still didn't know anything was ever going to happen. And so finally i was like okay. At least somebody's finally checking. Did it kind of validate journey started on. Yeah yeah it definitely did. There are also a lot of people who are saying. He's a great man. And i worried about that. I'm like did i make a mistake. Am i wrong. And there's no way. I have seen that i i was at this point. I'm like i have so much evidence. But still i can't. I don't want to hurt anyone's life. So yeah i was like okay. Something i it was valid and everything i have time for for a decade is olive yeah katie. Lancaster also felt a great sense of relief and was struck by the uncanny timing of miranda arrest. Maria was arrested october. Third twenty twenty the day before megan's thirty third birthday. I mean i was on my way to columbus not jumped out the damn car while it was moving. I couldn't speak. I couldn't talk. Couldn't tell anybody what was going on. I was just like oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. Like i just couldn't believe it and four to happen the day that it did it was almost like a sense of okay now i know this is a god thing like this happened the day before. Megan's birthday almost eight years into it like it could not have come at a better time. It was like oh my gosh we did it. We got this far. Megan look.

"Welcome to the massacre a production of iheartradio and katie studios. A lot of what i do is i can tiptoe into people's tragedy but i get to pull my toes out as opposed to the families who their entire lives. Are you know shattered. And in some cases destroyed and decimated which certainly happened in this case but as the story unfolded as we started piecing together things and talking with family members and law enforcement and people in the community became clear to me. I guess this a special place. This is the perfect massacre returned. Pike county season two episode six. The victims need a voice. I'm cording armstrong a television producer. Kt studios with stephanie decker. And jeff shane the day. That eight members of the rodent family were found murdered. Journalists chris graves began covering the story for the cincinnati enquirer. Her insight is crucial as she spoke with members of the victims families. The rodents manley's gillies in the immediate aftermath of the killings. She's the only journalist to conduct an exclusive interview with the wagner family. Just weeks after the rodents were found dead grave sat down with jake wagner who has now pled guilty and has accused mother angela. We finally got chris graves to sit down for an interview after many tries. She speaking out now because she feels it's imperative that the victims have a voice in this story. This is highly significant due to the current gag. orders here. She is speaking to our producer. Also named chris graves. When did you. First hear about the road murders. So i i heard about the crime the friday and which it broke. I saw a tweet. As i recall in the first news of this was there were people dead in pike county and that the police were beginning to investigate so my news instincts kicked him. And then i texted our editors and said this is our story. This is what i was thinking. Multiple people found dead in more than one location along. Union hill road in piked. In this morning. I two pm. Investigators say they found eight people dead seven adult victims and a sixteen year old boy all from the rodent family shooter or shooters out there somewhere. No one is in custody right now. Whoever they are They were trying to possibly wipe out this entire family. I was trying to get somebody. Who's on the ground. Who has is who can help you as a reporter because when stories like this begin to unfold. There's just so much you don't know you don't know anything. There was a church right across from union hill road and i managed to get reverend fill on the phone and i just started interviewing him and during the course of that conversation i could hear the reverend fulton talking with what appeared to be a family member who turned out to be leonard manley. Leonard is the father of dana manley road and also the grandfather of cana. Roden chris junior and l. advocates. So i asked him if he could quit. Leonard manley on the phone and he did and that was the first time i talked with a family member. He was able to tell me in that conversation who they believed had been killed and it was his daughter who found the first four victims. Who made the first nine one one call which we've occurred. I was trying to on the phone piece together. Who all these people. What their relationships were who were they. What were the relationships..

"Charlie. Reader printed himself as the people sheriff during the height of the road and murder investigation. Sheriff readers passionate pleas for justice earned him the trust of his community as a sheriff pike. County were at three hundred fifty six days into this investigation of got a message for the killers. We will find you. We will arrest you and you will be prosecuted. As this case niche forward. The spotlight grew brighter and brighter and that area. Because of this case and i think he enjoyed the spotlight to a degree. I think he had greater political aspirations as well. Here's producer chris graves speaking with investigative reporter. Jodi bar he covered the road. Murder case for fox news nineteen in cincinnati. What kind of power does a sheriff wheeled in a community like fight county. He was the closest to the people. Pike county and you see that with a lot of elected officials in more rural areas that you know the sheriff is literally the top dog in the county. He is the face of law enforcement. He controls what happens with law enforcement. Where patrols happen and he so as far as an elected official as far as a person holding. Power your sheriff in these areas demand. Something like that. Go to someone's head you've worked in law enforcement yourself for quite a while. Oh yeah you see it. a lot. Police chief sore sheriffs or somebody who's recently promoted to a supervisory position. I mean thank goodness. That doesn't happen to a lot of them but some of them the dodge now whether that happened here not i don't know but yeah that that very much could happen as the rodman moved into. Its second year. Some disquieting rumours about sheriff reader began to surface as we began to spend more time out there. We started hearing the rumblings that arison corruption out there. We had heard rumors about him. Intimidating people and possibly taking money from people who were in the drug dealing business. I know i for one was told by some of my law enforcement sources in the cincinnati area. Hey you need to be careful around him. He sturdy and these were just people that were my sources who said you know. Look i just want you to be aware. Be careful

I told her i said listen. Don't wanna marry him and he well wide on. I said mom is very controlling. These join him from what we hear. The relationship was intense. It sounded like field of number coys taken to the instagram. As you all four members of the wagner family have been charged with eight counts of aggravated murder. I have never encountered querying. Entire family is accused of the mass murder of another family. Something so horrific has occurred in. Its own yawn explanation when i look at one particular pitcher from the wedding day. "Welcome to the pike and massacre a production of iheartradio and katie studios episode. eight truth be revealed. Over the course of seven episodes. We have examined the details of the murders of eight members of the rodent family. The investigation that was launched in their wake and what led up to the arrests of six members of the wagner family. Now we're gonna look at where the case stands and what lies ahead next week's episode burning questions. I'm courtney armstrong a television producer at katy studios with stephanie decker. And jeff shane. When we left off last week it was june twenty six twenty nineteen and frederico wagner was in the defendant's chair in pike county courtroom. She was facing charges of obstruction of justice and perjury in connection with the road murderers. Here's frederica zone. Easter aa defending her aunt's claims earth. The prosecutors falsely believe bulletproof vests were purchased before the road and homicides both sides know that it is not true they were in fact purchased on may the seventh two thousand sixteen fifteen days after the day of the road homicides. So that's proven we know there's like receipts right. Yep got receipts got a. We have everything second. She guest and thought that she bought them from amazon. Now why they made a big deal about what what were they came off the internet. She ordered them off the internet. Whenever you go on the internet a bunch of places come up usually amazon's the first thing that comes up. She did that a lot but they made a big deal about it so they went back through her books and they found out that she did buy them but it wasn't from amazon ebay but criminal. Defense attorney mike. Allen told jeff that frederica statements are a much bigger deal than ray thinks. Well obviously when you have a situation like this and someone involved with the people that are charged makes purchase of to bulletproof vests whether it's from ebay or amazon at something that the prosecution would be interested in and she apparently was before the grand jury when she misrepresented if you will where she bought these things from it it. it's it's relevant and and also too. I think it would be fair to say that the prosecution probably wanted this Put onto the charges put on her to have a little bit elaborate with her to. Do you think that her explanation of to sing o. I don't remember confused as an attorney. Do that makes someone look more guilty yet. Does especially something. Like this. And i know she's elderly but boy she certainly seems like she's pretty sharp.

"Journalists chef. Winkler wrote about the story for the website the outline. He told me about his impressions of the initial. Reporting coming out of piped-in it was a big media story for about two weeks. And you know everybody from all over came to cover it. All of the world and water people have been similarly executed in the middle of appalachia and no one knew what was going on. I mean i grew up in the ozarks in arkansas. And these are people. I feel familiar with you. Know when i go up to new york california. That's like a disneyland And it's a strange will. They're in place. These these areas in and folks like this are not bill wilderness to me in the same way that they worked the people who came down and covered the story. Originally you need to get a lot of talk of look at these people. Smoking in you know wearing cammo and you know a lot of gawky. Just the sort of quotes from sad sort of backwoods people how they're perceived And that's that's just not where i come from But i think the thing that stood out for me was just how human everyone was heighten resident. Angie montgomery shared her view of the media coverage with producer. Jeff shane how do you think pike like the pike county. Generally gus has been portrayed in the media. I don't think they've been very kind to us. I've a lot of reports where they call us an educated Hill billy just dumb and think we're doing they think We're a bunch of inbred. I've actually seen that in some reports and and it's bad while it's easy for some to view the town piped-in through this kind of provincial. Almost stereotypical lands. It's not what we found. We visited the area. It's pretty far removed from the big cities of ohio. It's about an hour and a half south from columbus an hour and a half east of cincinnati and just under thirty minutes from the ohio river which basically separates southern ohio from northeastern kentucky. There's a walmart. There's a restaurant. There used to be great dive bar that has since closed. I believe and look for the twenty. Two hundred residents piked in his home. Native barbara in jaffa actually spoke a bit about that when we were there pike considered a village and it is a small just a small little town that has a grocery store and a pizza shop and gas stations. And there's a tire shop. People sitting talk at the gas station wherever wherever they go they people know each other and they just sit and talk. You know at the tire shop. You're waiting for a oil and oil change or whatever you the sit there and chat with your neighbor. Whoever happens to come in you probably know who it is. You know somebody everywhere or you know somebody that knows somebody everywhere anywhere you go. I imagine that is probably like sometimes kind of enjoyable. And then other times it's probably pretty maddening. Yes sometimes people know. When when i spend the day in my pool or when when i skip a day if i if there's a day goes by i don't get my full next time i see someone else say. How come you weren't bull the other day so it's crazy the majority of people. We spoke with depicted piked in this way small town. Usa everyone knows everyone. Nobody ever locked their doors growing up but when we started to pull back the curtain it was clear. That piped-in harbored some dark secrets secrets. That didn't start with the rodents. it seems like there's two sides of piped-in which is one is like the blue collar hard workers who you know. Want to raise their families the right way and yet somehow something horrible still did happen to this town. I think it's like every town you're gonna that wherever you go. There's going to be the ugly part. pike. Dan how's it. Jeff spoke to stefan a former piped and resident. Who had recently left town. She shared barbara sentiments about the community. I want to ask you so you. Now you're in florida and you're away from piped-in and all of this but it still seems like it's very much a part of your dna right. I haven't been home since july a year before last since one thousand eighteen and i i just. I don't know if i'll ever really like go back and live there and her. You know if you look back through the history piked and you know. There's there's quite a bit of things that just happen you know. There's no explanation for get swept under the rug. I don't know. I think there's more evil there than the just what happened to those eight stephens remarks left us unsettled but when we followed up with investigative reporter bar. He seemed to corroborate her thoughts with some troubling stories. He had heard during his time covering the road. In case this was national news the day the day after a few days after it happened but you know as it typically happens with the new cycles the national folks move onto the next big story we were left with that and we will get emails and consequential our phone call about new information. Is there anything to know. And there was nothing to nose. Slow boss came to me and said hey. Can you go over and start digging into this and see. If there's anything at all that we could find out. I was in pike county a lot and i kept getting stories about other homicides in pike county i thought man if there were that many homicides in a county this small. There could be something here that we don't yet know it's taking a look through. His research showed to discovered that there have been at least three recent cases in by county involving multiple homicides cases like the january twenty sixteen murderers of candace newsom and her teenage daughter christina. They're both shot execution style in their home..

"Here. Any garbage my cop buddies? Anti ticket. I grew up in a small town called Martins ferry Ohio, and I remember getting pulled over and I got a windshield crack ticket. The mayor at the time was Jack Regis. And I went down, and they were practicing at the at the, the Martins ferry pool and they had a kayak. They were some someone was practicing. And I went there the ticket through the gate and it does appear can't do that stuff anymore. That's you know, in in, I had a debate with another police officer buddy, the cameras, I hate. But, you know, at the end the day, the cameras are good thing for the officers because so many people say, well, he touched me wrong, or he this. Yeah. Absolutely. So protects police officers, but it doesn't protect us that used to get off tickets. Because you got the wrong persons, no member. There are trade-offs for those great responsibility. Great responsibility, something along those lines. I know. But I you know, our I've had a few debates on the show's over the years. And we all know Ray from Vance's really close friend of my retired state trooper, but he was the old trooper where if you don't act like a fool, I have a cop buddy won't worry, a ticket, if you smile on your driver's license. Really? Yeah. That's interesting. He said, if you're the guy, your driver's license you hate your mother, I'm wondering, okay, I'm going to give a warning. It's the guy or girl smelling on a. See I can understand I had a cousin. I forget how far along in the in the family chain, second or third cousin, right? She was a West Virginia state trooper for awhile. He's female troops. Don't give you any leeway. No. She did good. She pulled somebody over for a. I forget what violation. It was initially but there was also a child seat violation. They didn't have it. They didn't have a child safety or child seat for their for their young, if he said, look, she goes, I get it. Here's the thing you bring me a receipt within the next two days. Nice. Bring it here. I will resend the ticket, I want you to get this child safety seat. Good for her. So, and this has been this has been a hundred dollar ticket or eighty dollar child seat. Right. So she gave him the compassionate because one of the things that I remember from the West Virginia troopers graduation ceremony is looked at the troopers. They said enforce the law, but. Show compassion, spirit of law onto letter law, something along those lines. But, but they said, show compassion, and I've never forgotten. I mean, this has been wow, we're talking eighty five. I think I went to this thing, and I've never I've never forgotten that never forgotten that line out of that's all well, you remember the trooper got into trouble got in trouble forgiving. Those two young men awry, they went shot the guy and stole his car that trooper losses career Jeff Shane. He's good family, my mom and his mom. We're very close growing up. He was real close to my oldest brother when at all went down. He married a real another close from Liam, very small town. Cap costs of friends with her and her brother. And, and I went to his house. That's what really happened. He said, look, I was just being a dad, he called played in and from what I understand someone ran the wrong plate when he got to the exit ramp. Saw two young men walking with the gas. Can he picked them gave them a ride, but because he Pat them down? He lost his career. He had retired early whatever I get out all the case. All I know is the only one in a city that stuck up for him, maybe because he's a fellow rider idol. No. But maybe because I knew his mom mom worked at the little local dental person. Yeah. I know how good he was a d was dedicated, stay Harvard trauman. But he was the type of guy that if he pulled you and your kids over, and you looked at it and said, hey, man, the kids are acting up paying attention. That's why we're he'd smoke weed smell no alcohol, you have no priors say man to pay attention. You know, your kids in a wreck has lot worse them getting on your nerves or something like that. You know, as a human being and most the officers officers are most of them, but they're not allowed to be anymore. So I mean now they're making them. Robo cops and I and I don't know what to say to that. It's getting crazy. As long as we don't become Detroit. In that movie who do the RoboCop turned into a documentary, I last time to Detroit. My the late I screwed up was in a in a lift ride to the casino with a friend of mine, and I'm one of the council, ladies and she said, what do you think of Detroit? I said, I think it's a black hole. She goes what we've improved this city. I said where she was, you know, on councilman blah, blah, blah, blah of council, and blah, blah, blah, blah, and like, oh, great, right. To get with that. Like I put my foot in crucial. How long is the band before you're allowed back into the Cobo hall with J psycho inside there? But anyway, we'll get our last minute..
