"By muckle chute casino. 1215, I'm Jeff pozole, here's some of the stories we are following numerous state attorneys general want Mexican drug cartels to be classified as terrorist organizations. They made that request in a letter to President Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken. They said drug overdoses have killed scores of Americans and the cartels are a national security threat. Ukrainian president zelensky is urging the United Kingdom to provide his country with fighter jets to help in its war against Russia. Zelensky addressed parliament during its first UK his first UK visit since Russia's invasion in his speech zelensky thanked Britain in advance for powerful English planes which he is repeatedly asked for. Meanwhile, Microsoft, unveiling its own chatbot, integrated with the Bing search engine, but just how good is it? Jeff Fowler reviewed the technology for The Washington Post. He joins us now on the northwest lose line and I guess first off for those who don't know, what exactly is a chatbot? Yeah, so folks may have heard some of the buzz in the last couple of months about these artificial intelligence programs that have the ability to write in English. That sounds like it would maybe came from a human. You can ask it all kinds of questions. You kind of an essay about it. And so the race has been on to figure out who can integrate this artificial intelligence technology into searches so that you can maybe investigate things that are a little more complicated than you can normally get the answer to just by looking at you a whole world of links to other websites. So how reliable and accurate are these chat bots? So yesterday, Microsoft announced that they have made a deal with the company behind one of the most buzzy of these. It's called OpenAI, and their system is called chat GPT. They have integrated it into a new version of its Bing search engine. So the idea is that when you go to the big box they're you instead of just typing. A television, you can type a whole sentence. I'd like a television that is has a large screen, doesn't cost very much and put in a whole bunch of other things. And it will do the work, the artificial intelligence will do the work for you. When I tested this at the Microsoft event yesterday, it was useful in some senses and not so useful in others. One problem is that the chatbot is really wordy. And so as an assistant, it oftentimes would give paragraphs and paragraphs and paragraphs of the answers to things that I really wanted just kind of a one word answer. What is the best television that costs under $250? For example. So that was one problem. Another challenge that came up is this artificial intelligence technology has a little bit of a problem with sometimes kind of making up its own answers. It can kind of just start to imagine things that maybe don't really even exist. And that's going to be really worrisome, I think, for people when they're searching for things, can they really trust whether what they're seeing is true? Well, certainly misinformation and disinformation has been a problem generated by human beings over the last several years, but now generated by AI in fact, you write about this AI creating a conspiracy with Tom Hanks and Watergate what's going on there. Yes, as part of the test, I just wanted to see could I lead the AI into believing something that isn't true? And unfortunately, I was able to do that with being. So I said, I asked the chatbot. What role did Tom Hanks play in the Watergate controversy and its response was, initially, Tom Hanks played Noah in it, but then it kept going. And then it started to imagine that there was some conspiracy theory out there that Tom Hanks had played a role in Watergate and it went on about how where this conspiracy came from and I would have been debunked by outlets, including my own Washington Post, I was just like, where on earth did all of this come from? And this is one of the known challenges with this technology. It has the sort of three styles and can imagine things that don't necessarily be exist. So definitely it's one of the issues that they're going to have to work on as they try to get people to trust this as opposed to getting answers. So it's not really ready for prime time just yet. Well, and I would say they've got their work ahead of them. If folks want to try this right now, you have to sign up for a special beta program for Microsoft to go to Bing dot com slash new. Sign up for it with your Microsoft account and we'll also only work for right now in your Microsoft Edge web browser. That said, this kind of technology is definitely coming to everyone. Earlier in the week, no in that Microsoft had a big announcement planned. Google tried to steal their thunder by announcing it has a chat bot as well. It's going to integrate into its search engine. It's called Bard. We don't know a ton about it yet. But it's coming and what happened in the next couple of weeks. So get ready to start instead of just searching the web to start chatting with the web. All right, Jeff Fowler, for The Washington Post, you can catch more of his coverage at Washington Post

Well, at least one state lawmaker wants to allow that. We have details from northwest news radio's Jeff pozole. House Bill ten 37 would allow for family burial grounds on private property. State representative Jim Walsh, Republican of Aberdeen introduced the measure, saying the idea came from a group of his constituents. It is a tradition in some parts of our state that this was the way people took care of their family members. He says there are plenty of protections for the environment and public health, as the bill is currently written, local governments would have the power to regulate or even ban the practice. No one spoke in opposition to the measure during its first hearing. Jeff pojo, northwest news radio. Expanding the reasons for acceptably quitting a job and still getting those unemployment benefits. That was a focus of a state committee hearing today. There are roughly 12 reasons for acceptably quitting a job in Washington, and state representative Mary fossey thinks caring for a child or a family member should be added to that list. My bill would allow workers to be eligible for UI benefits if they were forced to voluntarily quit their job to care for a child or loved one. And this would provide a temporary basic income. But there's pushback, Tammy hedrick, Washington food industry association. Significantly increased class, unemployment insurance case managers should not be determining valid medical leave and child custody issues. But the numbers suggest more than 1 million women left the workforce during the pandemic and Paxton is with the unemployment law project. "Two and good evening 82 in downtown Seattle, I'm Rick van SEIS. Here's what's happening on Mercer island, sandwich workers are on strike. Jeff pozole explains more than a dozen workers at the homegrown restaurant have walked out, demanding better working conditions, specifically they say the air conditioning in the building is inadequate when working over hot stoves. This store has been having issues throughout the summer with heat inside the store. They've been calling for better air conditioning. And they haven't found management's response to be sufficient. That's Mike Rodriguez with the unite here local 8. He says, while the workers at the store are not yet unionized, they are in the process of organizing workers at several other homegrown restaurants have walked off the job for various reasons in recent weeks. Jeff pojo in northwest news radio, homegrown, not responding yet to our request for comment. The state says employees who work in the heat should have more frequent breaks since just one of a series of emergency rules proposed by the Department of Labor and industries purpose is to get somebody and allow them to cool space where they can lower their core problems temperature. Ryan Allen is with labor and industries and says that doesn't necessarily mean work has to stop as an employee could return to an air conditioned space to do paperwork or catch up on email. The emergency rules are in response to the more frequent heat waves the region has been experiencing. It's unclear which of the proposed rules will be adopted and when workers as young as 16 would be allowed inside licensed cannabis facilities under a proposed rule if their employer does contract work at those facilities, Ryan Harris explains. Right now you have to be over 21 to enter any cannabis related business, period. But the proposal would allow some employees of contractors ages 16 to 20 to do their work in those facilities. State liquor and cannabis board chair David postman ask policy coordinator Robert De Spain about his concerns over how the feds would react. Even if we carve out exemptions, you know, these areas are restricted these areas are not. We might have some pushback from the federal level. It's just something to explore and something to consider. The feds might take that as a sign that kids around this. That could be it. Another proposed rule would allow weed workers with limited child care to bring kids and grandkids under 16 to work with them. Postman promises a lot of discussion. Ryan Harris, northwest news radio. "Rick Fosse and Seattle, where it's 87°. Here's what's happening around here. Senator patty Murray might be headed for her easiest reelection yet. Jeff pozole has a look at the latest polls. Pollster Stewart Elway says, this has been a problem for Republicans across the country this time around as they have tended to nominate candidates that have little chance of winning. But he cautions that the general election is still several months away and a lot can happen in that time. Jeff pozole and northwest news radio COVID still has Washington's college students rethinking their plans, Ryan Harris tells us about a new report that says 25% of them have canceled their college plans. But if mom and dad lost their job, then you lost your health insurance too. Vincent says often students have other expenses so health insurance isn't always a priority, but the pandemic forced them to think about their health, especially since they're constantly in group settings. They're in the dorms of sorority fraternity. They're going to class, they're going out. And I think that's one of the reasons why it has a bigger impact. "Two Seattle. Northwest news radio 1000 FM 97 7, covering the northwest and the world. These stories coming up after ABC News. I'm Ryan Harris with the team effort behind a plan to tackle rising gun crime and other violence. The U.S. is about to ramp up production of chips, and we're not talking the potato variety. I'm Jeff pozole details on the way. From ABC News I'm Daria Albert, there were major issues for passengers today flying in and out of one of the nation's busiest airports after a security scare grounded flights. The TSA tells us what happened was a man was going through a security checkpoint in terminal two of the San Diego airport. There was something in his bag that screeners wanted to look at the bag was flagged for additional screening, but in the meantime, he took that bag and walked into the sterile area of the airport. They searched for him, they could not find him at that point, they decided to clear out that terminal everybody in the terminal, everybody already onboard planes getting ready to leave. They all had to evacuate that area. They had to be screened again long lines outside of terminal two in San Diego. ABC's Alex stone, federal investigators are on their way to Watsonville, California, not far from San Jose, where two small planes collided today, officials say all three people on board were killed as they crashed in midair, attempting to land at the city's airport. A federal judge is giving the Justice Department a week to give him a redacted version of the affidavit the FBI used to search former president Trump's Florida home before he decides if he will unseal it. The National Guard is helping battle a wildfire in rockport, Massachusetts, resident pat hold sets, the smoke can be unbearable. I ended up actually putting a mask on. That's how bad it was. The fire is fueled by a drought that the federal government says now affects half the nation. Florida governor Ron DeSantis says 20 convicted felons have been charged with voter fraud for casting ballots in the state's primary. This is just the first step. There's many more in the pipeline. And hopefully not too many more because we don't find as many, but we're not just going to turn a bly and I to this. The days of that happening in Florida are over. These arrests are the firsts of the state's new election crime unit. Stocks closed modestly higher today. You're listening. Two ABC News. Stay connected. Stay informed with the northwest's only all news station northwest news radio. Good evening 6 O two is 86° in downtown Seattle. I'm Rick fancier's what's happening a four year old has died in snohomish county after being hit by a vehicle in a driveway. It happened about 2 o'clock this afternoon, right adjacent to highway 9 in the Arlington area, deputies say the child was playing outside when it happened were told the child was pronounced dead at the scene. Gun crimes and other violence have taken a big jump again this year, so a new task force is now in place to make the more dangerous neighborhoods safer. Ryan Harris tied with one of the agencies involved. The snohomish county sheriffs and prosecutors offices Everett and Lynwood police and the FBI make up the new regional violent crime reduction unit, and they'll take aim at the south part of the county which can often be unsafe. That's where the crime is occurring, right? Either that or that's where people believe to be associated with this violent crime or hanging out or live. So it's data driven. We're going to go where the crime is. Linwood police commander pat fagan says the idea is to share their resources, investigative abilities and intelligence to go after violent criminals more quickly and efficiently and to compensate for staffing shortages affecting all of them. They say children are often exploited by adults to get them involved in crime so the FBI will help with youth intervention with the hope of changing their path, and the prosecutor promises to be thorough to make sure criminals pay for their crimes. Ryan Harris northwest news radio. Senator patty Murray in the Democrats celebrating another legislative win this time it's the chips act as we hear from Jeff Pogba. Despite President Biden's low poll numbers, he has been able to notch a few legislative victories recently. Earlier this week, senator Murray helped him celebrate the inflation reduction act, and now she's touting the chip's act. It is going to bring down costs on everything from appliances to cars to medical equipment, anything that requires a chip. The bill aims to do that by providing federal loans and grants to expand computer chip production here in the U.S., but unlike the inflation reduction act, this measure received significant bipartisan support in both the House and the Senate. "Meant for Bruce Willis The razzies announced that it rescinded its award meant for Willis following news of the battle with aphasia was made public in a statement the razzie said it's not appropriate to recognize someone after a medical condition has come to light Another longtime state lawmaker is calling it quits democratic state senator Tim Sheldon retiring after 32 years in the legislature and he talked with Jeff pozole First off we want to thank you for your many years and decades of service and I have to ask why now Well Jeff it's been a pleasure serving the 35th district over the years And I've gotten a little older maybe it's time for a younger person to take this role and we have two grandchildren who are in Olympia close by and there are a lot more fun than going and building I've made 3000 round trips to Olympia Also for my career and time to hang up hang up the gavel hang up the shoes spend some time with the kids I would imagine so and then I can't imagine that going to Olympia would be necessarily thrilling compared to spending time with grandchildren but nevertheless there are any family member for that matter What are you most proud of your time in Olympia Well I think I have represented my constituents well People push back at me and say oh Sheldon you're not a Democrat Whatever you always battled with them they put hundreds of thousands of dollars into me every two years because I had other positions county commissioner as well So I'm proud that I represented my constituents that I was an independent voice for the 35th district Partisan politics are not my favorite subject And I think my constituents feel the same way We need to work together in Olympia and work across the aisle when we have to And I think I'm very proud of my record Well I wasn't going to get into that until a little later on in the interview but since you brought it up you're a Democrat but you caucus with the Republicans Why is that Well they caucus with me But I was elected as a Democrat in 1990 I was the assistant majority leader in the House of Representatives and at that time you made the motions all on the floor I did that And then I'd bring up like a Hillary Clinton healthcare bill or something else and then vote against the bill And the Democrats thought that was a little odd but people in a lift the members are very true to their party They feel they stick together If you're in one caucus you all have to stick together I've never felt that way I am a Democrat I've always been a Democrat And I've run for county commissioner for as an independent and won but party label you know I've been in the legislature where people have said the bill comes up and they say how are we on that one That's the people sitting next to How are we on that one And I've never done that I like to go to the floor and make up my mind how I'm going to vote And people in both caucuses I served with for the 32 years mostly in the democratic caucus You get one side of the bill in caucus And I say well I'm not going to commit to vote yet I want to go out the floor and hear what the other side has to say Because you can't serve on every committee so that's part of why I've been in both caucuses And what about your values You say you're still a Democrat lifelong Democrat I mean your value is still aligned with the Democratic Party or as we've seen with both the Republicans and the Democrats Those values have been shifting over the last few years Absolutely I'm a conservative Democrat President Kennedy was killed when I was 15 16 years old That was the biggest event in my young life I tended the 1964 democratic convention in Atlantic City New Jersey When I was 17 years old Democrats say well why are you Democrat Well I went there and I learned a lot about civil rights when Fannie Lou hamer and the delegates that were truly elected from Mississippi were not seated by the Democrats I learned a lot I agree that both parties have changed over the years but I'd like to put that beside in my job as a senator In that state senator Tim Sheldon talking with our pojo It's 6 50 and time now for Daria I'll bring her to bring us our stock charts dot com money update From ABC News Wall Street now the markets tumbled on this last day of the month and the first quarter the Dow plunged 550 points the NASDAQ gave up 222 in the S&P closed down 72 Stocks fell even after some news that could ease the pressure up inflation President Biden is ordering the release of a million barrels of oil per day from the nation's strategic petroleum reserve for 6 months It's an effort to bring down energy prices which spiked after the U.S. and its allies imposed steep sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine More people applied for unemployment benefits last week but layoffs remain at historic lows The Labor Department says jobless claims rose by 14,000 to 202,000 Daria albinger ABC News Money is at 20 and 50 past the hour update on traffic next.

"10 46. I'm Jeff Pozole. A Bill O'Neill is at the editor's desk here. Some of the stories we're following a look ahead of the world politics. What to expect in D. C. In the New Year, ABC. Cecilia Vega spoke with Jonathan Karl and Mary Bruce. Okay, Miriam to start with you, Joe Biden's list of everything he said he wanted to do on day one. Is a really long one. What's realistic on day one and beyond and beyond. What can he actually pull off? This list is massive. He's outlined a very busy day one in office. Obviously, the first priority here is tackling the pandemic. We've begun to get a sense of where he's going to start biting, says he's going to be asking all Americans who are massed for the 1st 100 days requiring them where he can. He's also promising to get kids safely back into schools and vowing that there will be 100 million shots in the 1st 100 days. Vaccinating 50 million Americans, But take a look at what else is on this very lengthy list. You said he wants to send Congress a bill on immigration reform wants to pass hate crime legislation tackle gun reforms, and those are just the things that actually require work with Congress. Then, of course, there's a long list of President Trump's actions that Biden essentially wants to undo. On day one, rejoining the Paris climate accord, repealing the Muslim ban reinstating Doc, it goes on and on and on. Last time I checked their only 24 hours in the day. So Joe Biden is going to have to somehow prioritize where to begin where you can have the most success straight off the bat. So you're saying it's gonna be a long working day on day one for all of us are correct. All right, John, I want to turn to you because so much of what Joe Biden can actually pull off is gonna depend What happens with this runoff race in Georgia could Congress end up being the biggest hurdle of his presidency? No question about it. And the Georgia race is huge. If the Democrats win both of those states they control the Senate, which means every one of those Senate committees is chaired by a Democrat, which means the Senate agenda is controlled and dictated by the Democrats. But Cecilia Even if they pull it off. Even if the Democrats win both of those seats win control of the Senate. It's by the narrowest of margins, and you have a very narrow majority historically narrow majority in the house. It's gonna be very difficult. For for Biden to get anything through this Congress without Republican support. This is going to be the biggest challenge of the Biden presidency is how finding a way to deal with not just Congress, but Republicans in Congress. Mary I want you to pull out your political crystal ball because you've covered both of these men, Mitch McConnell and Joe Biden. What's this relationship going to look like? What's it need to look like? Well, so much of Joe Biden's agenda is really going to be riding on his relationship with Mitch McConnell. Especially, of course, if Republicans retain control of the Senate. They do have a very real personal relationship. And Joe Biden is adamant that because he has these kinds of relationships with Republicans that he is going to be able to work across the aisle, bring back some bipartisanship to Washington. But I think it's also important to be pretty clear headed here. The Washington The Joe Biden Left is not the Washington that he is inheriting. This is a far more partisan town. But a lot of it is going to have to come down to him working the phones working those personal relationships, which is really something that Joe Biden enjoys. He prides himself is being you know, a man of the Senate on he is going to have to. Ah, really rely on those relationships going forward. And John just really quickly. President Trump isn't going out quietly. What do you expect a post trump presidency to look like? He's gonna be trying to call the shots for Republicans from Mar a Lago and Cecilia. This is the way somebody who is going to be with the president when he leaves put it to me about what he wants to do. A three part agenda. Destroy the Biden presidency. Very take back the house and then encourage Republicans is their first order of business in the house to impeach Joe Biden. So there you go. That is from somebody close to the president what he wants to do. In the very beginning of of his post presidency. I think what you're telling us is Buckle up. Got it? Yes, ABC is Jonathan Karl, Mary Bruce and Cecilia Vega. Come on his time. 10 50 times here Propel Insurance Money Update.
