"You're listening to the daily sales tips. Podcast and i'm your host scott ingram. Today's tip comes from a guy who has never ever ghosted me. Here's jeff pohjola at some point or another in your career is going to be a prospect that falls off the map even a current client or customer that just loses communication with you and they don't respond to calls or emails or texts or whatever and it's really easy to take personally. It's really easy to say. Oh there's another one. I've been totally ghosted. And you put your tail between your legs and you go off and try to find another prospect. I think that's the wrong approach. You see. I think that you have a professional responsibility to help someone that you know you can help. And if you've gotten halfway into a discovery process you probably know with more certainty that you can help this prospect which just increases your personal responsibility to get out there and help them. But jeff ghosted me and it's this internet terminology this language that the kids are using. Look i get it but it's really easy to let that parlance kind of get the best view and you end up talking yourself into something. That didn't actually happen. I've been ghosted exactly one time in my career. That was the time when i finally decided that this person wasn't worth pursuing anymore. They knew it to this was a deal fell apart. It happens but in every other occasion. When i have professionally persisted when i have continued to provide value to my prospect knowing that i can help them and having the knowledge that they were pretty sure that i can help them to. My persistence has paid off. And in every single instance. I have been met with two very important words. I'm sorry i'm sorry jeff. This fell apart because something something in the industry a situation for a little bit. We're ready to reengage now. Or i'm sorry jeff. Someone in my family had a situation. I was totally checked out from work for a bit. You find that your prospects when they re engage apologized to you for stuff that they're not even responsible for so. Here's the thing in most circumstances almost every circumstance. The ghosting isn't really ghosting at all. It's a disruption of the timing of your deal it is factors that are outside of either your or your prospects can control and it comes in and derails things. Life gets in the way sometimes. Are you going to let that happen. Is that deal not worth closing. Because it's not gonna close by the into your quarter anymore. Is that a company or a person that is not worth helping because someone in their family had something happen to them. There is a health concern or there was an industry-wide concerned in things were disrupted come on. These are deals worth pursuing. These deals worth closing so my question is the last time you were ghosted. Where you actually ghosted or did you decide to go your prospect. Did you decide that. They just weren't pursuing anymore. That's an interesting question to wrestle with in once. You consider that the next time you're in that situation for more from jeff or to at least connect with him on linked into thank him for all of his great tips each saturday. Just click over.

"You're listening to the daily sales tips podcast and i'm your host scott ingram. Today we get to kick off the long holiday weekend in the us. With jeff pohjola here. He is quick tip for you today. On objection handling. I think there are a couple of different types of objections. There are the ones that are on the surface right. They're the ones that really don't tied a buying motives. But you can sniff these out as just those things that your prospects are saying to get you to stop bugging them right. These are the ones you need to fight through. You need to identify what they are. You need to prepare for them and either you overcome them or you. Just ignore them and work around them right like okay. You've given me this objection. I'm gonna continue to prospect to you as if you didn't say anything at all. Because you and i both know. This objection doesn't hold water. But i don't know if i've earned the right to really call you out on that just yet so if it's really an issue it will continue to become an issue. Let that happen right. Begged for that to happen. Because it'll be the seeds that can grow into a real conversation. But the ones i really wanna talk to you about are the ones that are emotional in nature. The big one is you cost too much now. I see these objections particularly when they're tied to emotion as these these are buying signals in disguise. If someone is really interested and then they get to the point where okay you cost too much or yeah. I've looked at your stuff. It's really interesting. But i don't have the money that suggests that if the price was right then they would buy now. I'm not suggesting that you run your manager and you try to get a discount. What i'm suggesting is recognized what you have and appreciate the fact that there is some emotional interest remember people by emotionally the justify their purchases logically in so many times. When you try to overcome objections you try to justify with logic and data and information. Why shouldn't be there objection when instead you should be focusing on the emotion that brought that objection to light when someone says that you cost too much means that they would buy if the price was right which means they're interested in. They have a little bit of context. For why you might be valuable unique. Need to push that ball across the goal line. Not run and try to get a discount right and there are other objections. That are tied to motive some of its timing. Some of it is features whether you have them or whether you don't but whenever there is a real longing there for the situation that you have to be changed us that emotion to continue the conversation build more report. Dig a little bit deeper and prove your value. That's how real sales are made. That is the selling part. It's not about negotiating butting heads. It's not about going back to this concession. And hopefully you get this concession get into the process enjoy the meat of the sales process and do what you're really good at and that's selling so when objections come up. Prepare yourself for how to handle the ones that you know. You.

"Welcome to the second edition of coaches conversations and the first one aired this past week and we talked about transfers and the goal this is obviously to have great conversations with some of the top assistant around the country and also some media people. That maybe aren't so good at their jobs Light rob dawson jeff. Pohjola myself on here today. One of the reasons that i kind of came up with this is to have these conversations with primarily assistant coaches Different topics get honestly. Part of it was getting a chance for you guys to know media better media chance to get to know you guys better and The topic this which again black coaches in the industry. How it's been for so long and how it starting to hopefully change in the right direction. One of the people that hopefully will help change is does oliver new head coach at east tennessee state has been. I've known this we met. We might have met. The first time like buckingham nichols watching. The league kendrick price. I don't remember. But i think that's what it was years and years ago but different assistant coaching stints at different schools. Fifty one years old now and you get your opportunity to be a head coach at east tennessee. State in doesn't come without. I don't know if criticism is the right word but certainly There are a lot of people. Thought you were crazy to take this job. I called you about three weeks ago before you took it. Nass you You know. Did you have any hesitation because obviously this was something where east tennessee state had parted ways with jason shay after after a year and after he supported his players kneeling in protest of the national anthem. A bunch of republican senators came out. Signed a bill or ladder prohibiting basically from doing that in the future so i guess start off with why you chose to take this job when a lot of people probably did wonder especially whether a black head coach could work at east tennessee state with what just happened. Well i mean first and foremost. I didn't even think about all of that when it was happening And what. I've never thought about not taking job for taking a job based on what other people saying. I never thought that way. My role was basically. We're playing we're in season. I'd really crazy month. So of of zooms interviews starting with albany came in second there at the same time. He was happening. Jacksonville happened and listen. In every case i didn't make one phone call to call one eighty about their head coaches. And so you know. Phone call comes from albany of our their job. I don't get it jacksonville. i don't get it and yet we're in the bubble andy. And i'm i'm you know working on scouting reports for vandy teams that scouted during the year and luckily didn't have any of those games to play. But i'm doing zooms in a bubble.

There were just too many games stacked up upon each other that they really never had a chance. Think losing earlier than expected in the big twelve tournament. I think it helped them. I think they went home. They can regroup. They can of get focused on getting their defense back and man. Those these last few games are were but as dominant of of performances. I can remember against houston wasn't even gained right. it was it was a complete beatdown against gonzaga. The team that everybody was ready to write the stories. I mean you don't know how many of my friends were ready to write the stories Jeff pohjola about gonzaga being one of the greatest teams ever. Where do they stack up. And i'm like yeah i just. I think baylor's are better team here now. Baylor death is what stands out to me. We just we kind of talked about that. With meyer and flagler you know you get off to a bad start when your best player. Foul trouble core. Kiss doesn't shoot it well and doesn't really. I felt like he didn't have great looks. you know. i didn't feel like he ever really got good. Looks at the basket drew. Timmy gets slowed down. It was just you get punched in the mouth like that immediately and it wasn't just a punch like they they knock gags aga- out in the rob rob when that has happened to you when that is happening. You gimme gimme an example of when you went out there with good purdue team and you knew. The other team was better. What are you thinking early on or even when you go out there and three three have a great example from purdue do big tennessee challenge two thousand nine it was such a high game warlike like six. They're like four. They're bringing it the team that the next year will in the national championships. So it's like it's john. Shire gerald henderson. Brian zubac lance thomas. Kyle singler really good team really. Good team pauses off the bench What was the nolan on. That team was the nolan on that one team. Yep yep no one was there they had a bunch of guys and i have never part of this duke part of this was the atmosphere and honestly it helped us down the road because i thought that it helped us win games the next year from being in this situation but when you come out to warm for the game starts with an hour pre-game and it's full and like the buzz and the arena is like i mean we we out to such a bad start. I missed the point blank lab. We're down like fourteen two four and it was just kind of like do i just. I'm looking at some of these guys. And i just think that they're better. They are better than us right now. Joe henderson made a move. Where i swear to god he made a spin move and finger old it down to the rim. It's like i remember. I love to see the play now. Migrant mother gives moving testimony about daughter who died
"Emotional testimony in Congress today as hearings were held on alleged in humane treatment by ice of immigrant detainees come was Jeff Pohjola spoke with ABC Serena Marshall that was nothing less than got wrenching to watch through and here's a young mother ideas mean war as painstakingly detailed that what she called neglect and Mrs treatment she received and her nineteen month old daughter received at and I the tension facility that they were held out for nearly three weeks and her daughter who's nineteen months at the time passed away shortly after that detention today she had suffered from a viral infection he said during her time at this facility he wasn't given access into proper medical care even though she requested it and she was essentially given Tylenol for her child and she fled violence in Guatemala and you could watch these lawmakers on both sides of the aisle look absolutely pained visibly emotional as they listen to her story and as I've got wrenching is heart wrenching but that was to watch and and hear from her it's unfortunate but it's nothing to these lawmakers can do you can really make this mother hold again and what's been the reaction from the Republican members of the committee because most of the Republican Party in Congress has backed president trump on almost all of his policies including border they really weren't pressing are on issues they were letting her tell her story speaking through tears as I said taking time to explain if you did you want to speak out because the world to know what is happening to children and ice detention and that they need to be able to do better as the United States of America that children should be be treated like that they were getting into the politics of it during her testimony she was really a first hand account of what's happening I should point out and clarify however she was held in an ice detention facility images of neglect and unsanitary conditions and standing room only for days and weeks on end are at customs and border protection facilities which are different ISIS leader typically made for a long term care TV people's leader for short term turn around and tell the children are either transferred to HHS or ice custody so those are different disabilities and what's been the response from the trump administration because the White House is certainly fought back on all of these investigations and hearings that the democratic controlled house has been conducted yeah I mean the acting chief of the parliamentary push back heavily earlier this week actually on this week with George Stephanopoulos on Sunday saying that there is no and humane treatment there is no and sanitary conditions because there are held to different standards but remember and as the president he also has the backing of the president as he said he came out and said that he wants to open up the facility to members of the media and let them and but remember it's not just a human rights organization to that axes are lawyers who represent the children or even pediatricians were brought in to treat the children that made these claims of unsanitary conditions and and call them essentially I a a ticking time bomb there was a report last week in the department of homeland security down watchdog organization the office of the inspector general which found almost the identical situation that Serena Marshall with Jeff

Shutdown talks disintegrate at contentious White House meeting
"Federal employees who have been furloughed orbin sent home from work or are working without pay. We'll be not receiving their scheduled checks for the work that they were supposed to be paid for. So that is really when the effects of this shutdown are going to be seen most viscerally. And in the meantime, the president certainly doesn't seem to be changing his position Democrats are back in their corners there. They were trying to talk to one another today. But they ended up simply talking at one another and breaking down very quickly the president's also going to the border tomorrow. So that will be an opportunity for him to I s I have a feeling that you'll hear him talk about some of the things he's seen and been told from officials that underscore why he believes this is a national security crisis. And that may lead him even close. Sir to declaring this national emergency. So on that what happens if he declares it? A national emergency rules governing national emergency are very open ended in a way that will help President Trump interpreted as he. So see fit, of course. So he could in theory asking the military to reallocate funds to immediately constructing the wall that he wants on the southern border. However, how fast that would actually be implemented is up in the air because he would immediately be subject to legal challenges from advocacy groups likely for members of congress as well.
