Migrant mother gives moving testimony about daughter who died
"Emotional testimony in Congress today as hearings were held on alleged in humane treatment by ice of immigrant detainees come was Jeff Pohjola spoke with ABC Serena Marshall that was nothing less than got wrenching to watch through and here's a young mother ideas mean war as painstakingly detailed that what she called neglect and Mrs treatment she received and her nineteen month old daughter received at and I the tension facility that they were held out for nearly three weeks and her daughter who's nineteen months at the time passed away shortly after that detention today she had suffered from a viral infection he said during her time at this facility he wasn't given access into proper medical care even though she requested it and she was essentially given Tylenol for her child and she fled violence in Guatemala and you could watch these lawmakers on both sides of the aisle look absolutely pained visibly emotional as they listen to her story and as I've got wrenching is heart wrenching but that was to watch and and hear from her it's unfortunate but it's nothing to these lawmakers can do you can really make this mother hold again and what's been the reaction from the Republican members of the committee because most of the Republican Party in Congress has backed president trump on almost all of his policies including border they really weren't pressing are on issues they were letting her tell her story speaking through tears as I said taking time to explain if you did you want to speak out because the world to know what is happening to children and ice detention and that they need to be able to do better as the United States of America that children should be be treated like that they were getting into the politics of it during her testimony she was really a first hand account of what's happening I should point out and clarify however she was held in an ice detention facility images of neglect and unsanitary conditions and standing room only for days and weeks on end are at customs and border protection facilities which are different ISIS leader typically made for a long term care TV people's leader for short term turn around and tell the children are either transferred to HHS or ice custody so those are different disabilities and what's been the response from the trump administration because the White House is certainly fought back on all of these investigations and hearings that the democratic controlled house has been conducted yeah I mean the acting chief of the parliamentary push back heavily earlier this week actually on this week with George Stephanopoulos on Sunday saying that there is no and humane treatment there is no and sanitary conditions because there are held to different standards but remember and as the president he also has the backing of the president as he said he came out and said that he wants to open up the facility to members of the media and let them and but remember it's not just a human rights organization to that axes are lawyers who represent the children or even pediatricians were brought in to treat the children that made these claims of unsanitary conditions and and call them essentially I a a ticking time bomb there was a report last week in the department of homeland security down watchdog organization the office of the inspector general which found almost the identical situation that Serena Marshall with Jeff

How do we do? We get to this point. All. All right. Thank you, very new. Slandered this man from top to bottom. Komo's Jeff Pohjola has the latest now that the Muller report is out all be redacted. The political spin is well underway. Now, the American people know that you are no different from you Giuliani or Kellyanne Conway or any of the other people who sacrifice their ones decent reputation for the Griffin liar. Who sits in the Oval Office guys, you can go out and spend those anyway you want to but the data is there. There was no underlying crime. And there was insufficient. Evidence to indict the president out obstruction of Justice all of that from bars testimony in front of the Senate Judiciary committee, but the has refused to go before the house he'll go before a Republican controlled body, but not a democratic control body and tropic democratic congressman Adam Smith. The broader pattern bar not appear to be a neutral trader in trying to figure out what happened with the Russian interference the election. And what the Muller report uncovered? But despite the back and forth. Republican strategist Randy Pepple. Says the public doesn't really care. This is the type of inside the beltway activity that the rest of the country pretty much ignored. I see this partisan bickering going on. And they've heard so much about the report then it's been released. Now, they're still arguing about it. I don't think really works for the rest of the country. No matter how much engaging to Democrats and Republicans on Capitol Hill in pebble says the Democrats are overreaching congresses in the past are still concerned about getting the president or getting the other side that they forget what the rest of the country actually want to work and right now the democrat beat to have a legislative victory not a political victory. But with the twenty twenty campaign already underway politics is likely to motivate both sides, whether it's politics or a sincere concern for the law. The latest shot from Democrats is aimed squarely at the attorney general fad, it is for us to see the top law enforcement officer in our country misrepresenting withholding the truth from the congress of the United States speaker of the house Nancy Pelosi who is accused of lying to congress during his testimony. And now there's talk of the house starting impeachment proceedings against the G. Nobody. Above the law. Not the president of the United States and not the attorney general a move that Pepple. Says would backfire in congress trying to figure out a way to keep the Democrats in congress on the front page, and they do that by talking about him. When they absolutely that. They do have the votes to impeach him in the Senate. Jeff Pohjola, KOMO news. "Asked. I'm Jeff Pohjola. The constitution mandates that the president shall from time to time. Give congress information of the state of the union now in recent times that has been a speech to a joint session of congress at the formal invitation of the speaker of the house, but now with the government shutdown speaker of the house Nancy Pelosi has suggested to the president that he postpone the address or deliver it in writing. Joining us now is KOMO is Lana Zak from the capital and Lana this is rather unprecedented in recent memory, absolutely. The the unprecedented territory that we are in being in the longest government shutdown in our nation's history continues to snowball and today, we're seeing something that I think few people would have ever predicted a speaker of the house. All but rescinding her invitation to the president to jointly address congress. She's not saying he's not allowed to come on the twenty nine, but what she did say in a letter to the president was that as long as the government remains in a shutdown that they should work together to figure out a different date for his state of the union address, or her alternative proposal is that he could deliver it as a as a written state of the union, which is what presidents before Woodrow Wilson used to do. What's been the response from the White House? We're still waiting to hear how the president himself is going to respond. We've heard from other Republican minority whip Steve Scalise is tweeting that that the moon by the speaker shows, quote, Democrats are only interested in obstructing. And since since speaker Pelosi was saying that the reason they shouldn't take places because secret service of the department of homeland security have not been funded during the shutdown and to have a state of the union enjoyed address of congress. That's a major under. Retaking those organizations down low security concerned, and the shutdown was was the heart of of her argument, but secretary of homeland security Kirsten Neilsen throwing back at Pelosi tweeting. They are quote fully prepared to support a secure at the state of the union the politics cutting so deeply here at the capitol. What's been the reaction from Democrats under Pelosi's wing Democrats have really fallen in line with Pelosi strategy throughout this government shutdown how she has negotiated things with the president. And with Republicans. We're not hearing much to send coming from the ranks. We didn't hear that there. There were some Democrats in the problem solvers caucus who met together with with their Republican counterparts. That's a bipartisan caucus they went to the White House to meet with President Trump did talk through the areas of disagreement into. Try and find a way to break the logjam, according to White House press secretary, Sarah Sanders was a positive meeting. And so they better understand where everybody's coming from. But it's still so far off from actually promising any any resolution to this government shutdown which we understand from the principal negotiators has completely broken down. And there is such a level of mistrust between between the top people. It seems unlikely that is going to be resulting. So does it appear that the president will make his way to the house chamber on the twenty ninth likely, not the house chamber it is possible. And one of the things that we've heard floated here at the capitol is that he could be invited to the Senate because remember that chamber is still in Republican control the other idea that's been floated is is that he could give an address directly to the American people from the Oval Office, again, we're in we're sort of off of the math right now in terms. Of what could happen? And so all of this. This point is just speculation. Alright ABC's Lana Zak, thank you so much for joining us. Thank you, Jeff. And that will do.
Shutdown talks disintegrate at contentious White House meeting
"Federal employees who have been furloughed orbin sent home from work or are working without pay. We'll be not receiving their scheduled checks for the work that they were supposed to be paid for. So that is really when the effects of this shutdown are going to be seen most viscerally. And in the meantime, the president certainly doesn't seem to be changing his position Democrats are back in their corners there. They were trying to talk to one another today. But they ended up simply talking at one another and breaking down very quickly the president's also going to the border tomorrow. So that will be an opportunity for him to I s I have a feeling that you'll hear him talk about some of the things he's seen and been told from officials that underscore why he believes this is a national security crisis. And that may lead him even close. Sir to declaring this national emergency. So on that what happens if he declares it? A national emergency rules governing national emergency are very open ended in a way that will help President Trump interpreted as he. So see fit, of course. So he could in theory asking the military to reallocate funds to immediately constructing the wall that he wants on the southern border. However, how fast that would actually be implemented is up in the air because he would immediately be subject to legal challenges from advocacy groups likely for members of congress as well. So this could be held up in the courts for a very long time. But at this point, it does seem to be the most realistic channel for President Trump to actually get some of that money.
