The new rules in Major League Baseball are hokey or going to make the game better. You can only pick one of the two because they can still be hokey but make the game better. Maybe there's a better way to word that thing or do I just stick with it. You can stick with it. Yeah, you can stick with it. I think people get the idea. I'm okay with it, but this feels like baseball is at a crossroads. When you look at the draw of the NFL, that's 12 months out of the year. And I think if you're going to be baseball and reinvent yourself, what exactly do you want to be? Hey, we want to be something different. We want the games to be faster. I just want the games to be more interesting. We get caught up in, if somebody says, hey, this movie is three hours long. And then you watch it and you go, gosh. That was great. And then you can watch a two and a half hour movie and go boy, that was forever. Look at baseball. You go to a game, is there any movement? There's not. Might be a couple of home runs. A lot of strikeouts. And that's it. And I think what baseball is trying to get is movement, excitement, get the hitters into the batter's box, get the pitchers to pit. All of these things. I just want quality, not the clock. The game was over and three hours and two minutes. Wow, that must have been a great game. Not necessarily. Yes, I just want to know why they're going after Rickey Henderson so directly. With the bases. Now the base. That was a safe record. Nobody steals bases anymore. He was going to be the king into infinity. I think it's still safe. They're going after Ricky Henderson. Okay. Jeff passing from the mothership ESPN senior baseball insider, joining us from Scottsdale, Arizona. Jeff good to have you on. Where do you want to start with the rule change? The one rule change that you think will have the biggest change in baseball is going to be what? I think that the pitch clock is going to be the biggest change in Major League Baseball perhaps to integration. Mike, I don't feel like I'm being a prisoner of the moment in saying that. I just look back at all the rules, changes throughout the years. And I don't know that I can find one that's going to have as demonstrable and effect on the game as the pitch clock does. Because you're right, like there are great three hour movies in there, terrible two and a half hour movies. But I think there's a psychological barrier that fans have erected in their minds. About baseball, where it's too long, it's too slow, it's too insert negative connotative adjective right there. And I don't know if you have a chance to watch any of the minor league games last year where the pitch clock was used. I'm telling you Dan, if you haven't seen a baseball game with a pitch clock, once you do, you're gonna be like, how in the hell did they go this long without it? People at Major League Baseball like to say this is going to bring the game back to the style from the 70s and the 80s that we had.

"Show. We got one more hour to go. Jeff passing from the mother ship, their baseball insider will join us. We'll talk about Aaron judge staying with the Yankees. And Jeff passon had a tweet earlier that Aaron judge strongly considered San Diego, the Padres had a better offer on the table than the Yankees did. The Giants also were in there as well. The Yankees bumped up their offer, 9 years, $360 million in judge decided to stay put. I don't like these long-term contracts. But the agents know that's what you ask for now. And the back end of these deals like Trey Turner back into his deal in Philadelphia. Ugly. Bryce Harper, I think it's going to be a bargain, said it at the time, and I do believe he'll be a bargain in Philadelphia. Aaron judge, that kind of money, you know, the Yankees play different than most teams. You see the Dodgers play different than most teams. They have the money, they generate the money, but do I want to have Aaron judge for 9 years, I do not. 5? Okay. But the agent's going to say we can get 9 years some other place. The Giants will give him 9 years. So the Padres will. But if you're the Yankees, you basically bet on him not having this year that he had. Now you're betting on him having similar years to what he just had. 9 years, 9 years is an eternity. It's like when I look at Albert Pujols, he had two different careers. He had a Hall of Fame career, and then he had a career with the angels. Now, did he have a resurgence at the end of his career? Absolutely. Was he worth that kind of money? Only if he would have helped the angels win a World Series. And that's what I have to ask Aaron judge to be able to do. And is that fair to ask him just because what he's going to be making here? Albert Pujols, how many playoff games did he have?

"And if you're a giant being on a team that's got a ton of money to spend and is an hour and a half from the small town you grew up in. And I'm a Mariner. You can look at all these different places. And in the end, I really do wonder money is going to be the tiebreaker because money can not value, right? Money says this is how much we value you. We can say it. All we want with our words, but we're going to show you instead of tell you. Okay. So it's going to come down to who pays them the most is what you're saying or that you general sense. I don't know if it's going to come down to that because I think there's certainly scenarios rich in which he finds comfort in a place or with a theme that may not be willing to pay him the most. But I think that to discount money is being hit an enormous factor here would just be ignoring human nature and ignoring the idea of achievements and wanting people to recognize that achievement in as many ways as they can, including the most tangible, which is how am I going to compensate you for your achievement? So what do you think the timeline is on this once the World Series is over? Or has it started the Yankees already reached out to him or the Yankees are still trying to figure out who's doing the reaching out? What do you got? To be honest, I don't have a I don't have a great sense on the timeline at this point. I look in the past at big three agencies. I look at Bryce Harper and Manny Machado. They didn't sign till February. I look at Corey Seager. He signed in November. The market has not established itself at this point yet. I could see him wanting to get something done quickly because Aaron judge's a very process oriented guy and somebody who's pretty meticulous in his routine and wanting to get that established earlier rather than later is always a good thing. But there's also a scenario in which the market is not what he's looking for and he runs the risk and is willing to absorb the risk of letting it play out in hopes of getting what he thinks is right and fair. So what are your thoughts on the market? Matt's Red Sox Dodgers. Will they be involved, do you think? In this? I think I don't know that the mets are going to be involved. That's not clear at this point. I do think the Dodgers will be involved. And I think a lot of the Red Sox depends on what happens with Rafael Devers. Because I don't see them extending Rafael beverage and signing Aaron judge. So if a Devers contract comes through, then I think they're probably out of the running for judge, but if one doesn't, then they'd be foolish not to at least inquire and see if they can tell them I'm going to Boston because you want to talk about a coup. Oh my goodness. Can you imagine Aaron judge with a Red Sox? Well, you would be derelict of duty if you represent Aaron judge and don't get the Red Sox involved and in the most public manner possible. I mean, that would be honestly, what is that straight out of the Scott Boris playbook? Put it all together, it's going to be a monster story in baseball, certainly because it involves judge the Yankees. And then also Jeff passing here on the rich eisen show, part of the reason why I wanted to talk judge with you is not only your remarkable piece with ESPN+ ESPN dot com and so much more is the fact that the Yankees got swept by the American League champion Houston Astros. And one would think one would think that in order for the Yankees to finally get past the team that Bob Costas called the Yankees daddy. I mean, even Costas is getting in on that sort of language, right? You'd have to have judge there. You'd have to. My sense is, how does the ALCS inform judge and the Yankees and how they can put together a team to get past Houston for a change? You think? You know, this is where it gets kind of problematic for the accidents, right? They have not shown a willingness to go payroll wise where they have gone in the past into the extremely high 200s. And. Three years ago, I would have bet every dollar I had that if it seemed was going to exceed $300 million, it was going to be the Yankees or the Dodgers and the mets. So not only are the Yankees being out spent these days. They're being outspent by the other team in their city. So when you look at what their payroll commitments are for the future, it's around $200 million for next year. And boy oh boy. $200 million, you add another 40 for judge and then you got to add a whole lot more on top of that because the team you put together, frankly, just isn't good enough. Not good enough to beat the Astros, you can make an argument that it might not have been good enough to beat the Mariners. Which is a wild thing to say, but I was talking to the plants of colors after the Astros won the ALCS in a pretty stunning sweep again. Well, no, it's not stunning. Convincing, sweep against the Yankees and he was talking about how he thought nobody else would have eaten Seattle. And maybe that's maybe that's just the ASTRO's way of propping themselves up. But I think in a series between Seattle and the Yankees, it certainly is not going definitively in the Yankees favor. Cleveland Cleveland took them to 5 games and I think Seattle was a markedly better team, especially for the playoffs than Cleveland. You know, I could you just named many teams, all of them who put the ball and play more than the Yankees. I mean, they are like that proverbial basketball team that shoots threes to win. That sure, they can win a lot, and they can blow you out, and they can come from behind. But if the shots aren't dropping, they lose. And that's about it for the Yankees. If the ball's not leaving the yard, they lose period end of story, and when you go against teams like the Astros or guardians or if they did have to face the Mariners, they are some good pictures. Everybody comes out throwing a hundred out of the pen now. They'll strike out. They'll strike you out. That's it. In this day and age. Yeah. I mean, listen, let's not discount that the Yankees this year lost Michael king lost Chad green, lost Scott after those are three really good bullpen arms and that their bullpen was as thin as it was in the playoffs in large part due to those injuries that they didn't have DJ le mayhew that they didn't have Andrew benintendi. Two guys who would have been part of that everyday lineup and strengthened it.

"120 countries. I'm Michael Barr, this is Bloomberg Tom Paul. Michael Barr thinks so much. Bloomberg business of sports with the shift I watched the other day in baseball. I still don't get it. But now we have relief pitchers starting games. Jeff passing over to ESPN today with a smart article on breaking the cadence of starting pitcher to middle relief to one guy that mops it up. You don't even look records anymore. You don't say like it used to be, if you're a great pitcher, you had 20 wins in a season. Yeah. Yeah. Nobody gets that anymore. Remember the Baltimore Orioles had three pitchers one year Jim Palmer and two others that were killed. From a Bloomberg business of sports standpoint, is this just there were so much money that the worry about their arm is completely taken over. Denny mcclain didn't care about his arm. He would just pitch until. I mean, we all fell off. You're too young to remember this, Michael barber, there's a guy named Christy Matheson out of bucknell, who tragically died early of TB, but a guy like Matheson pitched himself out of baseball. I get that's the bad case. A hundred whatever pitches a game. Pretty soon he couldn't throw the ball, but have we swung too far the other way? No, well, I think this is the way you're going to see the game go, because you're going to have it broken down in three segments like that. You got started, then you got the middle, then you got the reliever. You're going to see

"Your first three years, you're getting paid around the major league minimum. Now I understand probably everyone listening to this podcast would love to get paid the major league minimum of $570,500. It's a great salary, but compared to, say, $43.3 million, if you go out in those first three years and outperform Max Scherzer, you are still going to be making 1.3% of his $43.3 million. So whether it is a bonus pool for those guys or some other mechanism to get them paid younger, that's a big part of it. Competitive integrity is another issue. And what the union means by that is they're tired of tanking. Tanking disincentivizes teams to go out and get players on the free agent market. And while we've been talking Pablo about the Texas Rangers and about the Blue Jays and the Mariners and the tigers spending money as they try to ascend toward a playoff spot, we also can look at the Baltimore Orioles whose current payrolls projected to be $37 million. The Cleveland guardians who are at 40.2. Jeff those are payrolls that in total are less than what Max Scherzer is making in a year. That is exactly my point Pablo. A single guy is making more potentially than an entire team. The third issue is service time manipulation. Major League Baseball's system is service based, which means of the 186 or a 187 days in a season. You have to spend 172 of them on a big league roster to get a full year of service and after 6 full years of service, you go to free agency. Well, we see Chris Bryan out there right now. Chris Bryant in his last season ended with 6 years and 171 days of service. He was one day shy of being a free agent last year. And that sort of service time manipulation as the union and many others. Call it, is something that's it's just hard to figure out how to fix that if you don't completely overhaul the system away from service time. So that's going to be a tough one. But I think the biggest one and this is always going to be the base one because it has to do with money is getting rid of artificial restraints on free agency. Now, these artificial restraints that exist, whether it is that CBT thresholds of $210 million right now. Right. That's the luxury tax that is placed on teams payrolls to try to reduce overspending. Or it is draft pick compensation, where if you sign somewhere else, that team needs to give up a draft pick for the privilege of signing you. They're clearly not doing a whole lot to dissuade spending this off season. And yet, if you get rid of them, fundamentally, theoretically, it is a much better thing for the players. So in response to all of this, Jeff, what is the league? Offered like in an attempt to meet presumably halfway or somewhere around there on those issues. There have been some proposals that have been. Accepted as possibilities, and there are some that have been laughed at sneered at grimace at and trying to figure out what the union wants has been the most difficult part of this entire thing for Major League Baseball because it believes. And some of this may be in good faith. Some of this, maybe not, it believes that what it's put out there has addressed what they're looking for. Now, yes, $100 million salary floor, which was in one of its proposals, would go a long way to addressing some of these issues with teams that are looking at payrolls in the 30, 40, $50 million range potentially. It also came with a lowering of the CVT threshold from $210 million to $180 million with more onerous penalties as well for exceeding it. So it's almost like you're robbing Peter to pay Paul here. That's not something that the union was interested in at all. I think one that has a chance to really stand up is getting rid of direct draft pick compensation. So Corey Seager goes to the Texas Rangers because the Los Angeles Dodgers gave him a qualifying offer, which is a one year $18.4 million tender that he rejected, of course, because he was going to do better in free agency. The rangers for signing seger have to give up a draft pick. And I'll tell you, that's the sort of thing that can hurt players markets. If the rangers don't have to give up that draft pick, do they give Corey Seager more money? Because the value that they would have assigned to that draft pick now could theoretically go to the player. A draft lottery, which MLB recently proposed could go a long way to disincentivizing tanking, though draft lottery exists in the NBA. And we seen a fair bit of tanking there anyway. There are things out there that are percolating that are interesting, but the reality is the Players Association really hasn't felt very good about any of it. The league's objectives here, as you would phrase it, what are they? Well, there are a few things that the league wants. We can start with expanded playoffs. There's been a proposal is Jesse Rogers wrote on ESPN dot com. For a 14 team playoff system where the best team in each league gets a buy out of the wild card round and then you have a wild card round in which the two division winners that aren't the ones with the best record in the league. And the other team with the best record in the league, aside from those three, get to pick their opponents for a three game wild card series. Jeff, I love it so much. Do you love this as much as I love this? Because I love this. I love it 'cause it's bulletin board material, and even though athletes can just be so simple and basic in their motivations like he said something bad about me, I now hate him with the fire of a thousand sons, like that. I mean, that's all it takes. And imagine the bulletin board material you're going to have if somebody chooses you. They chose you because they think they can beat you because they think they're better than you. What I want is a TV show. Can we make this a TV show where there is the choosing broadcast live? It will be a TV show. It's gotta be a TV show, right? Could we see a Mountain Dew drunk Jeff passing, wearing a judge's wig in a robe, presiding over a draft of teams that think less of each other? That would be terrific. Yes. Please. Judge Jeff. So there's the, there's the expanded playoffs. But more than anything, probably we can look at all of these things. More than anything they just want to keep paying players the same amount that they are right now. But that's what this comes down to. Major League Baseball and the owners. Feel like the players get a large enough share of the money as is. Even though the average salary in the sport has actually gone backward over the last 5 years. As revenues have gone up, COVID accepted revenues have continued to grow in the sport. And that's a big part of why we are where we are right now. So Jeff, I also want to understand the emotional state of things here. How would you describe just the animosity.

"There's been a quarter century Jeff since 19 four when we lost that World Series you referred to and you would hope that lessons have been learned, but I'm curious what the players are demanding here. What are their top issues that make them want to re invite all of that uncertainty into their lives? The players look at a few different tent poles of what they'd like to accomplish here. Number one, they want to get players paid early in their careers. You have to understand and baseball system right now. Your first three years, you're getting paid around the major league minimum. Now I understand probably everyone listening to this podcast would love to get paid the major league minimum of $570,500. "Why did they get zero walks in a playoff game? That was interesting. Against a team with like and I'm not even throwing shade at the Red Sox just an entirely mediocre pitching staff. I understand Nathaniel Aldi, Nathaniel all these great. In many ways, he has that mentality where he could just pop on the mound and be like, yeah, I'm pitching today dude. It doesn't matter the circumstances. Well, yes, that's true. But now he's done it with Boston and he's proven to have that mentality based on his performances in the 2018 postseason and now tonight as Jeff pass and said, he is who Gerrit Cole was supposed to be. For the Yankees, and that's just that's just the way the things that's the way the cookie crumbled for the 80s. If I may, if I may, though, that's why the Red Sox are in my head. Not because they're an astounding team, but just because their fans still act like things don't bounce their way and they're lucky if they get one break a century. But you look at last night's game. And you look at the decisions that were labeled failures that ended up being successes under the brightest lights. Nathan ivaldi pitches well in 2018 and saves the Red Sox bullpen in the World Series run and Dave dembrowski gives him a huge extension. And people go, oh my God, Dave dumb, browse he's so freaking stupid and it can sense us that it's sort of an overpay to keep to reward a World Series hero. And he goes out there in 2019 and gets hurt and everybody goes, what a dumb move. I'm so glad we fired Dave dumbrowski because he overpaid Nathan evolve because everybody's like laser focused on these singular moves. And lo and behold, the volume comes out in 2021, and he's better than Garrett Cole basically all year long and he is the ace that the Red Sox needed last night. Where's Garrett Cole wilts in the similar situation and have all these being paid $240 million less? Then this trade deadline, high bloom goes out and gets Kyle schwarber instead of Anthony Rizzo in response to the Yankees stealing Anthony Rizzo from the Red Sox. Rizzo wanted it being totally fine on the Yankees. Great defense, 110 WRC plus, perfectly above average, good player. Schwarber doesn't even have a position. And he's injured when the Red Sox trade for him. And people go, where is Kyle schwarber gonna go? I don't understand this. What a dumb move. Ridiculous. High in bloom so overconfident. Where's he gonna fit this guy who has 35 home runs at the all star break? Lo and behold, he leads off yesterday, hits a giant bomb off Garrett that ultimately ends up being the impetus to forcing him out of the game. And he's been great over the last month and a half since coming to Boston. So there's another one. Everybody piles on a mistake. And guess what? It worked out. Look like a mistake wasn't a mistake, puts the Red Sox in a position of power. The Red Sox trade Mookie betts. It's the dumbest thing a team has done in 25 years of Major League Baseball. It's embarrassing. It's a white flag. It's saying we don't care about our fan base, and we know our fans are sheep and they'll eat up anything. And they'll eventually rationalize Mookie leaving and claim he never wanted to be here and.

It's good to have some happy talk at the end of the podcast and we welcome trae amburgey and hoy parts on the taxi squad but that could change because you know or shallow zip code. I l judges hit in the code. I l jeff passing confirmed during this podcast. You that all of those positives have been confirmed. We all probably anticipated that. But those guys are all going to hit the i l. for real even if they played and i wish that we believe they will but yet brief positive. I mean keith. Law said it. It's basically a he. He he usually hates the yankees to always and prospects he rated yes. A-rated rated trae. Sweeney eighty nine in the draft when they took him twentieth overall and then in this post draft wrap up is like trae. Sweeney rakes so okay. Thanks keith Completely backtracking on your own ranking. But he he likes the draft. He says Richard fitz like. We've been saying if the foot injury is what knocked him out of auburn's top of the rotation which people seem to believe is the case. They took him In the sixth round people say he's a top fifty prospect the entire draft and brendan back. Who the ridiculously say might be close to the majors already. After they took him in the second round is another guy he really liked says. He's a four starter at lowest with higher upside of his ninety. Six hour keeps rejecting a lot so he really likes the enke's red sox. I mean it's obviously everyone likes that. The red sox marcello meyer who was the one one pick who has taken fourth overall but keep law sort of said some interesting things. Which is what. I've been saying that. He probably has the most the purest talent in the draft right now but not the highest ceiling. Which to me. That sounds like a fourth overall. Pick more than it. Sounds like a first overall. Pick and i i. That's what i've been saying all along. He he's sort of incredibly smooth. It short probably gonna stick. Their long-term bat tool is great but the power other players have more interesting and more untapped power potential seeing a very good baseball player who the red sox should be very proud. They have but what keeps. Didn't say and i will say is a lot of people are panicking about this. The reds had great shortstops before the red sox have zander. Bogart's right now who might be the best shortstop in the american league. It's close you know. Maybe not maybe correa better and that's fine. But he's a top five shortstop in major league baseball. I know what it looks like. The red sox have a great shortstop. You know. I know what that looks like. I don't know what it looks like when the red sox ace jack lighter atop the rotation chris sale is different. He's he's built differently. He's been out for a year plus with injury complications. He is sort of a freak. Jack lighter is someone where they consistent delivery who could potentially do this for fifteen years. Well we do know what they look. Like as pay. Pedro we experienced. That's scary. i don't like it. It's it's frightening. You didn't wanna face them. Every time he was on the mound. So i i would agree. I i'm happy. They did not get jack letter. That would have been very bad for us over the next year..

"Jim Kelly will join me momentarily. But if you were just jumping into the conversation here, I would like to share just quickly some thoughts on what Jeff Passan just reported and again. In the car this morning. On my way into work I read in its entirety. The astonishing report from Jeff Passan and Meena Times about the now former Mets general manager Jared Porter, who when he was working for the Cubs five years ago. Sent a seemingly never ending Syria's of texts to a woman covering the team, which included provocative photos of himself and one that took it all of the way. Which, if you read the story, you will find out. He subsequently claims was not actually a photo of him, but instead quote I kind of like joke Stock image. End quote. Course, because nothing in the world is funnier than a man in a position of comparative authority, sending a woman a picture of a Penis and thinking that her response is going to be Oh, yes. Finally, my dreams have come true. This is something that people like me need to talk about. This is a tragic story. On every front. The woman started to hide from him while she was in the ballpark, doing her job. She suffered from anxiety, and ultimately, she left the business. She now works in finance. Says she came to the conclusion. Why do I have to put myself through these situations just to earn a living? A reasonable question, And there's one that obviously no one should ever have to ask. Under circumstances like these I'm not exactly sure what I can say that will illuminate the situation. Not sure there's any new ground that I can cover here. I will say this Recalled during the time. Of the height. Of the me too. Period when all of these stunning stories were coming out and coming to light, seemingly on a daily basis, you know exactly what I'm talking about the most illuminating part for me. That would assume most men had the same reaction Was that in conversations about it with friends, dinner wherever it is, you might have been and talking about it. Without exception. Every man I know was horrified and stunned. And not one woman I know was even remotely surprised. And it was then that I realized just how different the workplace is for people based upon gender, and it made me feel terrible. And what does unquestionable to me? Is that as we have learned time and again Circumstances such as these and I use that broadly. If things are going to get better, it starts with the people in power, paying attention and giving a damn They may have just heard Jeff passing as he was running through the details of the story saying, You know, just Mendoza speaks very eloquently on the issues that we have in baseball in particular today. And of course she does. And I love just Mendoza. It shouldn't be on her to talk about it. Because it's one thing for Jessica Mendoza to be in a position to talk about it. What really needs to happen is people like me need to talk about it? Until I promised myself during that time. That when I had the opportunity to Was not going to sit this one out. I'm a person with a pretty big platform. A person with a fair amount of power. So we will cover this. And if there's any new information that comes to light, you will hear it here. Let me make one thing 1000% clear. The tragedy in this situation is not as I have seen in some places. At the New York Mets finally looked like they were heading in the right direction and boom. Now this Tragedy, and this is not the impact on the Mets or their fans. The Mets will be fine. If you were a fan of theirs, you will be fine, too. No one should have to explain that that isn't the story today. In so many places. It seems to be And so I think we have identified one part of the problem. So my closing thought on this. Again. If there is any further information that comes to light. I had prepared all of these things to talk about. And that was before we knew that the Mets had actually made the decision, the only decision they could to fire Jared Porter today. The only thing I can think of to say is the most important thing to think of to say is That we who are in the positions of power and authority in this country. Have to remember that it is on us to change this stuff. This stuff doesn't change. Because I guess on some level of changes because this woman finally did come forward, but on Lee because then Steve Cohn has to do something. And then only because the other people in the positions of power and authority have to do something. We need to talk about this stuff and do this stuff when we don't have to. So, yes, my promise to you. Regardless of your gender or anything else. On this show. We will talk about this stuff when the the occasions arise again. I came back to the radio when I told you that the primary reason I wanted to do it because I'm underlining the word Joy Sports brings me in my life, a lot of joy and I know what brings you in your life, a lot of joy and we will lead with that nine out of 10 times. But sometimes something really important must be said. Someone like me needs to say it. Because everyone expects Jessica Mendoza to say the easy thing to do today, someone called Meena Kynes, someone called Jessica Mendoza. Someone called the women who work at ESPN and have them talk about this And of course they should. Of course, they should. This is very personal for them an entirely different ways, and in some ways that I, of course, will never fully understand. I'm sitting here to tell you today. It's important to me too. And until it is important to people like me Nothing will ever be done about it..
