"Are you satisfied with the life that you have? Why would you ask that? Talking to IndieWire last September for a feature that followed master gardener's premiere of Venice. Paul Schrader confessed that while making it, he thought he was going to die. He woke up in New Orleans one day having difficulty breathing and seeing out of his left eye. But he had only four days of shooting left. So what did he do? He got out of bed and went to the set. I knew if I called 9-1-1, those bastards would never let me out of the hospital. And the film would not be finished Schrader said. So I lay there in bed and said, well, maybe I won't wake up tomorrow. But would I rather not wake up tomorrow or wake up in the hospital room, knowing I can't finish my film. And so I made my decision. It's a fitting anecdote considering that, among other things, the three characters who inhabit Schrader's man in a room trilogy all share, among other symptoms, an unhealthy commitment to their work. Ethan Hawke's pastor taller is virtually always in uniform in first reformed, while Oscar Isaac leads a steady but ascetic life as a gambler in the card counter. What separates blackjack from other games is that it's based on dependent events, meaning past affects the probability in the future. Isaac's William tell explains an O does tell have a past. So does Joel Edgerton's novel rough, a former murdering neo Nazi, who has created a peaceful new life as the horticulturalist for a luxurious southern estate owned by Sigourney Weaver's misses Haverhill. Incidentally, I hope I'm not the only one struck by some of the film's cheeky name choices. This being a Schrader film, of course he calls the estate grace wood, and weaver's misses Haverhill will have her hill and anything else she wants. Thank you very much. Unlike taller and tell Roth's profession genuinely seems to offer him pleasure, or at least the illusion of order and control, but that illusion becomes more tenuous when misses Haverhill's great niece, Maya, played by quintessa swindell, arrives as a new apprentice. Joshua recently conducted a movie club discussion about faith and fanaticism and first reformed, and in your card counter review admitted that you were pretty forgiving of how thickly Schrader lays on the theology. Pre downtown living back in the burbs, you were a man who enjoyed tending to his garden, and no, that's not a metaphor. You did work in your garden. I think that's where the similarities between you and marvel Roth begin and end. Where do you see Roth fitting into Schrader's continuum of haunted men? And how forgiving are you of Schrader's test of our willingness to forgive him? Yeah, he knows a lot more about soil than I ever did. That's for sure. Do you really get in there and smell it? I didn't. I didn't do the soil huffing, which may explain some of our less successful garden beds, perhaps. Yeah, obviously that was an interesting element of the film for me. I knew going in that Schrader was going to use this in completely metaphorical terms. We get a lot of gardening know how in scientific information, but it is on that metaphorical level you've already nicely referenced that it mostly works. And boy, you're anecdote at the beginning about traders health while finishing up the filming for this makes me really wish I liked Mastercard girl. He was willing to suffer first. Oh my gosh, I feel terrible now. For the record, I mixed a negative on this movie. But you hear something like that and I want that to be the story for first reformed. His masterpiece, right? Anyway, back to your question. You know, it's a tough one for me because I did not connect with egerton's performance or this character nearly as much as I did. The other two. And I'm still trying to work out if that's a matter of performance or screenplay or direction. Edgerton is an actor, you know, I've long admired. And I think a couple of Jeff Nichols productions in particular midnight special, but one that's been largely forgotten, unfortunately, I think, loving opposite Ruth negga. He is just wonderful in a very underplayed soft spoken performance. So it's not an edgerton thing for me, but there's definitely an edgerton thing in this movie for me. And your question helps me frame that because I've seen how Oscar Isaac has managed this particular type of man so well in the card counter, which I liked a little bit better than this. And of course, Ethan Hawke gave us maybe the definitive one. You could argue a screenwriter Travis bickle is the definitive one for Scorsese's picture. But in terms of Schrader directed, I think that hawks Ernst Toller is the definitive performance of this particular type of man for Schrader. There's a faltering there in that line for me that I'm still, as you can see, trying to process. As far as your other question related question in terms of how far willing to go in terms of forgiving a sinner of their past guilt, I think that's one of the more fascinating things about these last two pictures in particular. I don't know that it says play in quite as much in first reform. As it is here and it relates to what I did like about master gardener in this trilogy as a whole, it's really clarified for me that, yes, there are men in a room, they're men writing in their diaries, you know, with one lamp on and one drink on their table. And we get to hear their thoughts. But they're also all three men reckoning with massive American sins. And I feel like that's what Schrader is after. In this recent batch of films and we can go through these in more depth, but basically, you know, it's not talked about as much as the faith element I think for first reform, but that's a movie that's really wrestling with the environmental degradation that a prosperous nation has caused. And then you look at the card counter and it's American war mongering at large, I think, is the subject there, the specific contest is Abu Ghraib and Oscar Isaac's characters involvement there. Master Gardner, you mentioned it when you talked about Adrian's characters background, this one's taking on maybe America's original sin. White supremacy. And place on a former plantation. Exactly. And even little touches like Roth's, he lives on this plantation. This is state that he also works on, I think he might live in former quarters that enslave lived in, probably. And you counter that with the mansion that weavers mistress lives in. These are all interesting ideas. I don't know that they are executed as well here as they are in the other two films. I don't know that it's because Roth has committed a greater sin that I can't get behind. The general idea of how far can grace extend is one that has bedeviled Schrader across his career. And I think it's one of his strongest exploratory themes. And that here is not the issue. I think grace can extend to someone like Roth. But in the exploration of that idea, things are a little awkward here. I think taking on this original sin of America, maybe Schrader found himself in fields where he's not quite as adept to speak to. Well, how about the formality as well and the structure surrounding who even can enter the house? You have to have a certain type of invitation. You have to be wearing a certain type of clothes, otherwise you're going to sit on the porch with the porch dog. Porch dog is the dog's name. That's the dog's name. Exactly. This film for me is my least favorite of the trilogy. And I will say that I appreciate both hawks and Isaac's performances more. I do think Isaac is more naturally charismatic and that character is even though charismatic is not a word I would really use to describe William tell. But unlike you, I didn't have any issues with egerton's performance. In fact, I quite liked it. I thought his stillness made him elusive and enigmatic and I understood why people were drawn to him and the sinister side of his soul that we come to know has to be there.

"With Reese Witherspoon. He's like, woman swaddle this baby. It's like the funniest thing that ever happened. And then coming out in April is a film called the covenant, which is a war film starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Yeah. Oh, wow. It's about him going back to help his Afghan interpreter get out of Afghanistan. I think based on your experience with you. And the interpreter, we're gonna use the timing of that film to talk about films that are not like that. That's okay, I think. Lock stocks, snatch, rock and roll. And then the expanded universe, the non Richie version of those films. Do you have any awareness knowledge interest in that layer cake? Yeah, I mean, I like dirt rag British crime lords a bit. I was also thinking about it. I think the last, well, the last movie I saw in theaters before the pandemic was the hunt, but I think the last is that what that was called? Yeah, it was. But the last screening I went to was the gentleman. Do you remember this shot? Yeah, I do. Yeah. I enjoyed it. I remember Michelle dockery. She's magnificent. She's in the new Steven knight show. Oh. She starts with him. Great expectation. No, it's called this town and it's about 1980s Birmingham and the rise of two tone and ska music. When you say Scott music, I think of Michelle dockery. Night Shyamalan, and he was like, I'm just gonna do you and how you are. And it seems pretty normal, the century. Exactly. It's really fascinating. What else did we miss? Well, Chris Valkyrie, that's you have two posters of that movie in your office. Can I just say Valkyrie is a really good movie? Do we disagree with that? Yeah. "Smart decision. Also i want the new season. Are you for you like to the were pretty good. Yeah they're good. They you know they. Obviously they were smaller in scale which was intended point at least the first one was If the second one too but like yeah. I just reiterate more. So the weirdness of the video which feels very odd oddly edited. And we're talking so long about this because we don't have any news items. We keep talking about wola bonnie the entire episode this fine speaking of ola bunia. There's been off in the subs. He wants some. You want some sarah on your pancakes. Bugs a hunt okay. Okay there okay. They're on oh handsome. Oh yes yes. Oh handsome bugs right on it over easy. You need carrots over easy just pan. Frying a carrot on right on the brittle instead griddle drawing a carrot just cracking a cared open and having an egg yolk come out of the carrot you quite place There's a new spin off coming out for it. It's not going to be like obviously spent a quiet place for three It's going to be based off from an idea from drunk Since can be a new group of characters fighting the same sound based monsters in his apparently going to be directed by director. Jeff nichols who did mud mud. I loved he did loving as well. Loving was pretty good This is do right now. They they set the date for it in twenty twenty. Three mid-march I'm i like both quiet place movies. Like kinda talked about so. I mean anything they want to do with it. I think it's fine because they're always going to make money off of that But like i think we talked about a little bit With the last movie. It's kind of tough to see. Where do you go from here while retaining originality right. I just yeah you. Do you know the one of the things one of the issues. I have with it. Is i think by this point. The the monsters are interested enough for me to care like they. They are a threat. But we've we've seen them get less scary just by virtue of one learning how to beat them into like like you're saying in the review time where this one single monster terrorized his family for an entire ninety minute first movie and then you get into the second one and they're just getting like down.

"Think the problem is the idea of these monsters who navigate by sound. it can't really sustain. It's certainly not the way that john krasinski is telling the story. I i was i. I did enjoy the first one i think. Actually the funniest thing about the first one for me was that i watched it apart cinema in hackney never on kind of goes into horror film clutching their popcorn. And this is a film where like you can't really eat popcorn. 'cause it tightly destroys the the ambien so everyone was trying to like eat the popcorn either cheaper quietly or to do it really quickly when the monarchs came on screen so that is very funny to me and actually the press screening for quite place to. They gave us all bags of marshmallows. Which i thought was really really funny. I thought that was a hilarious joke but no one else seemed to. That was very funny. I was saint everyone. They gave us marshmallows. Do you get it. Because it's a quiet place in. Everyone was just not not very pleased by that but i kind of was high paying the they could pick up from the last film and kind of go to new direction by actually think the film pretty much follows the exact cloth. The first film Some based trauma. There's yeah like later said the kind of dad. Underestimating the plucky young girl and then essentially like i really think this point but it kind of even like ends in the same way. I it's just very repetitive. And people have said like oh. It's clear that they were doing a lot. Well building for the sequel is going to be another one Somewhat on the line by con even really see what the sequel would be about. There's no sense for me when wherever any of this is going. They seem to be the end of quite place to in exactly the same place. They were at the beginning of the film. say today. i'm just very like underwhelmed and also you said about Kaczynski having kind of horror a background this. This massively shows being his kind of understanding the post apocalyptic world because it very much throws me out at the moment. When i'm watching like post apocalyptic horror film and the heroine has like perfect her because like where is that many blunt finding a hairdresser highlights when they're like eighteen months post collapse that that for me like it just it just really angered me your rights. I think not direct t. Much on junkers inskeep. Because i feel like whatever i could size him. It's just his character from the office looking. But he's he's not a speculative storyteller in perspective fiction. He doesn't really think. About the implications of this post apocalyptic world. We did go outside the family homestead from the first film which was such a good contained area where the outside world as well not exist. But once you start looking to of the survivors of the little hubs of a new civilization society. It is quite finley drawn. So the idea that. He's sketching out a world for a sequel. It is not quite successful here but we should say emily blunt was such a strong presence in the first one. She takes a bit more of a backseat here. Not just to kill him murphy who he said lailah resume doing very good sat dach- performance but we should chance out. Millicent simmons a stuccoed because it's almost the exact same praise we gave last one. She's so good as the young daughter and is again carrying so much of this film. Les what about the former view. Yeah i mean i think millicent simmons wonderful and i'm kind of glad that they're sort of positioning harris like the ripley i suppose if of the franchise but i just yeah i. It's all a bit thin isn't it. I mean when even kind of when you think of all of these elements when they sort of tried to bring this idea of like ooh people might be the real monsters off room. They sort of pickup the idea but they don't examine it who do anything with an I also really felt that was the case with the munsters because for sure in the first one. We can kind of skate by. Ooh this concept of sound and like you. They've got these cool long limbs and stuff. But i found myself a lot of the time thing. Yeah but what all these guys like. They eating people so they're just assholes essentially and they just like to pieces and like he didn't like the great monsters of time that has to kind of be a bit of like fairy behind them to kind of make them interesting like you know. There's like zita molson in that whole thing of like reproduction like that kind of doing things as a tool and with this one just. Yeah i think we needed a few ideas. Unlike a few more ideas developed properly and you know the third one is already announced that Jeff nichols of not special fame. Take shelter He's a he's going to take the reins of the franchise and he is someone who definitely does know how to turn these. These high-concept concepts into some deeper ideas to blow character has explored more social themes. I suppose so. I suppose will win me back. Hope with that one. I don't know. would you be for quite place part. Three hundred i will because i really love. Jeff nichols in a moist kind of campaigning. Pants make movies. I call him during a quiet place. Part three really like you know. Sparks joy But i'll definitely medicine. Simmons i definitely want to see more from. I felt a bit disappointed. By how little no gps given to. Because i think he's a great actor in again like him and nominee button ready. Get a kind of a raw deal in this film. But i do appreciate the we all kind of in a bit of a dearth original horror ceo. I'm all tight kind of walking. Get the my okay. Well let's put some schools on a quiet place part to this is in anticipation enjoyments. And in retrospect lilo ios I would say an anticipation. I was at a full. Because you know. I pissed so desperate to get to send see anything and like you said. It has been an advertised to us for what feels like decades Enjoyment i would give it three Screechy monsters always ajoy. But yet to. In retrospect it was really a bit thin on the ground and like you said before it was just a complete non ending of a failed and say it was quite a deflated feeling at the end. Hannah probably sirri just. Because i think. I'd kinda got fatigue for from hearing about this film for the so long on than to to. Yeah it's just no just disappointing. Like i said. I think it really was potential in this kind of explore the origins of these creatures and kind of workout where the world is of guy next. But i just didn't it didn't really do any of what i would hope a sequel would do. Yeah i think. I had residual excitement's about the the first film. The first film at least had freshness on his side separately. Three two two me. There's a glimmer of hope. Jeff nichols particularly if he brings in either of his regular ads. Michael shannon no joe alleged. I mentioned that the previous sat out the water. I would so love to see michael shannon. Shing someone oh yeah okay. Yeah michael shannon like. Get some board. I'm back. I'll wait be fashion line. So that's a quiet place part two in cinemas this weekend up next different kind of film it's gunda.

"This guy's busy with other things but it looks like The alien nation movie that he was considering doing for fox is now becoming a possible ten episode series which could air on who knows what the fuck but i remember watching the james caan movie. I remember watching the alien nation tv series. Jake this is a franchise that i really enjoyed. I i think. I do think that they can kind of like update this with like what's going on today. you've got to think about this. James caan played. They say he's a racist but in all honesty. He's a species because he's against aliens. And he's i. He's the first human cop that's teamed up with the first alien cop so one of these aliens one of these alien refugees that land in l. a. becomes a cop a police officer and has teamed up with james caan and i it was such an interesting concept jake. Of course you remember that their one of their stronger than humans but like their weaknesses saltwater. Yes so saltwater. Kills him. And i loved the movie. I really enjoyed the tv series. I believe it was on fox. It was and i think jeff nichols is the right guy to do this and man. I still want this to happen. No i agree. I i honestly think a ten episode tv series is a better platform for it then a movie. I is the type of story that works better in long form. Storytelling like that. So i'm kind of excited by this news if we were going to wait for it. I'm glad that this is what came from it. greg rebecca. Do you have any history with alien nation. I remember seeing the movie. And i watched the tv show which was probably what the early nineties someone. Yes yeah it's funny late late eighties. A probe definitely early nineties. So i would imagine. This is one of those weird situations. My mind actually went to bright. Which i did not think was particularly good movie but a recent attempt to do something similar with a different spin. That wasn't very good and just obviously hoping they'd do a better job but certainly a lot of sort of current material to to reference. It should be interesting rebecca. did you watch. Did you watch alien nation. do you remember this one. I know you're a big star trek fan. I don't. I don't know if this ever was on your radar. Well yeah for. I did watch the movie..

"Here's what i think about everything. There's a lot of other people that were involved in those movies in a lot of us productions that don't have the same views as bless. They've spoken out against it. Yes yes ima watson. Daniel radcliffe off big stars. Have good for that good for them. There's still you know what i mean. There's still some beauty in this series. That's come out of it and it's a damn shame that the creator has to be a bigot and a piece of shit gas. Yeah i was disappointed. That eddie redmayne kind of backed her up because of course he doesn't want to say anything too awful since he's going to be in a another fantastic beasts. Yeah well he. He also didn't have a role as a trans woman. So i wanna. I understood up more. But he's yeah i. I'm not surprised that he said it is his history with that sort of stuff but yeah and he's going to be in the next movie so he's going to be company man and he's going to you know. Try to come out in support of her. But i just i don't know i'm speaking as a woman that i i'm. I'm speaking as a woman saying trans women and their experiences take nothing away from my experience as a woman. We are all women so it takes nothing away from my experience and anybody who says otherwise fucking asshole. More news from dr presence. It you know. I i know how you transition. That's a factor is fucked up fucked up because it's like. I am a fan of harry potter. But i'm not a fan of all this. It's fucked up. it's fucked up bigotry. I'm not a fan of the position that she's put us in as fans of like like of her. I'm not gonna take anything. Away from her creatively. She's got an amazing imagination. She's an amazing storyteller. But my god shut the fuck up. I'm trying to think of what i would feel like if like george. Lucas came out and said he hated italians right. Yeah italian i'm trying to do my research. Lucas coming out and say well known anybody but it just it would be devastating. Got sees optimus prime. Don't just don't stink before he speak optimists. That's all i'm saying. Don't fuck this up for me. Darker jeff nichols alien. Nation lives on jay. We reported on this years ago. This alien nation. Yeah several years ago came the news that celebrated take shelter mud and mill. Midnight shelter director.
