"Thomas has gotten that link. thomas has been fine. Yeah he's good Ryder cup those of you is saying. Oh no he's going into golfing all. I'm going to golf again. Steve stricker the captain. The ryder cup. Pick six guys on his captain's pick all of whom are young. They're all good players. Does schoff lays scotty schefter tony. Female jordan speed harris english antennas pro. Son i'm leaving one out. Who's the william burger daniel. Berger okay. they're all fine players. He left out a great ryder cup player. He left out. Patrick read bond. Tried to sell us yesterday as going young patrick in his thirty's not old patrick reads not old. Patrick read his overall record in the ryder. cup is seven three and two when he's three and own singles. You have on the team a guy that nobody wants to play with price into shambo. If you add patrick read you have a second guy. Nobody wants to play with so you put them together. You put them together. And who is the wildcard and what. I don't even know if he's not to play with him. I don't even know if he's going to play with a wrist injury. I think it's a mistake. Look you know. it's there's twelve people out there. I don't know that it has anything to do with. Who's going to win and who's going to lose. But the european squad has a lot of vets who are very good in this particular format. This is the way the euro's beat the united states. They don't beat them in the majors as much as they beat him. In the ryder cup. I think it's really mistake not to put. Patrick read out there. But i yield to the golfer in the family. So i think coming back to where the americans have had the edge in that comes down to international major competitions. And i think here. You're looking at steve stricker. I mean you actually could hear the pain in his voice when he was trying to relay why he did not pick this player and patrick great. I think it comes down to health patrick. It hasn't really played in the last and he'll know physical rocking pneumonia. You don't move. You've not physically. Where he and if he was if he wasn't older elder statesman if he was a filler tiger. And say we want you out there. We want you work in the walkie talkies with us. We'll get you out in singles and maybe you'll play one more time but you don't even know if he can do that and then comes down to scar tissue. You're mentioning players that don't have the baggage of these wildly lopsided losses when they were the favorites and they were the sort of the international story in gulf those half the team as random house. And so you're looking at branding. Is this actually the path as to how the europeans got the edge and the ryder cup over the last twenty years where they brought in people who who had less name recognition not even name recognition just less exposure to this event to this event and their their prime to sort of make their mark on it. Because now you look at you look at careers in ian is career is made from the writer. And you'd say once you have that success does success than beget more success. Yes so you would have not put read on. I would probably have a conversation with him. And say i know you want to do this. But where exactly are you personally. I would not put him on. Because i think you already have the distractions and i would try and i would trump here from him if he was if he was healthy. I think it'd be harder harder. Choice for the captain. I will point out one more time. His record is overall record. Seven wins three losses and two ties. The two greatest golfers in the united states history of the last thirty years tiger woods and phil mickelson underwater on their career records. They're under five hundred. Both of them just say we'll take a break when we come back. We'll start with james carville and jeff mon- find out what they're thinking about games this weekend. I'm tony kornheiser.

"I'm Jeff Mon on Arizona's news station K T A R news. Mike Broom head show on K T A R news 92 3 FM and the K T A R news app. Thanks so much for being here. It's the Mike Groom had show. We appreciate you spending some time with us today, Dr. Cara Chris joined me at 8 30. By the way, if you missed it, and you want to hear the entire interview, I'm gonna play it. It's an entirety at 11 35 today before the show, So one hour from now we will play the entire interview back for you if you'd like to hear it. Dr Cara Chris joined us. And we talked with her about the county sites. Now the rumor was they were running out of out of out of doses of the vaccine at the county sites, the county pod sites. So there are a couple of sites that are run by the state, and that is at Phoenix Municipal Stadium and State Farm Stadium. And there are other pod sites around they're being run by the county health health director. And so obviously the state gets them in. So we asked Dr Cursed about this and what's going to happen? Are you working with the county? Are you going to get doses to those places for working directly with the sites to make sure that appointments don't need to be canceled on that they get the vaccine that they need to meet the appointments that they have? So our team is reaching out, but we are working directly with them. So the rumor was they could run out as early as tomorrow of doses of the vaccine. I know someone that is in line to get their second dose on Saturday. Are those people going to be able to get their dose is there will be that pain available, And so we know that we've got the vaccine here in the valley that we can redistribute. So no one should worry about showing up at a vaccine site today or tomorrow to it to get vaccinated. So she is saying that those doses will be given to them. We I asked the doctor about how many doses we're getting. Versus how many doses we've asked for. And what's the difference? I mean, can you know what what could we be? What could we actually be doing if we had the doses that we need? What we're asking for is an additional allocation of about 300,000 doses per week. That would give us a total allocation of about 452 470,000 week, because right now we're getting about 170,000 each week and that statewide. We know that the pods that we both the county and the state run prods could function just with the 300,000 additional doses that we asked for. So that's good news that we have the capacity to grow and get people vaccinated faster. On Wednesday, we crossed over the one million mark we could get. There must quicker and we could get people vaccinated quickly in Arizona. If we were able to do that, so she did say, you know, hang on. There are gonna be more appointments coming. We should be opening up more appointments at are state run pods So we would tell people you know, Look for our announcement will always give a heads up and they keep trying, because the demand is certainly outpacing our supply it this time. When it comes to the phase one. We're in phase one be right now, which you know is frontline workers, and we know that it's including educators. We just heard if you've heard during Katya our news they broke the news that the county sites were only vaccinating people. 75 years old and older in this phase, they now are dropping that to the 65 under beginning on the 15th. Which is very, very good news That's Monday. They will do that. So we've already been doing that at the state run sites. It's been 65 Plus that those state run sites. When will they wrap up one B? When will the next phase and who were those people be in the next phase? But most importantly, first and foremost, When does this one end? We want to start moving into that, probably at the end of February, beginning of March. Daddy is going to depend on the vaccine supplies. So depending on that supply, my next question was what about getting doses into pharmacies? Now she does talk about the fact that they're in. Some of those places now are currently limited doses that are available in pharmacies in Arizona that will continue to increase. I know that, as of today, the federal program will open up in there directly allocating federal stop scene. That will be fries, Albertsons, Safeway and Walgreens. And then we'll continue to expand that that pharmacy program as we get more about feet, But we are hoping that it will be readily available by April, so and then Dr Fauci made those statements as well. They're hoping that by April, it's available to the general public. And you know, I didn't get into a lot of percentages with her. How many people are getting it versus people that aren't but she did talk a little bit about her immunity when we were talking about getting a mask. The CDC has come out and said good news that once you're fully vaccinated, you are not contagious to other people. And that's great news and you don't have to quarantine which is very, very good news. But what about the need to wear a mask? Once you're fully vaccinated. If you're not contagious to other people, can you remove your mask? Even if you are vaccinated, please still wear a mask. We don't have enough community or the herd immunity in order to protect those vulnerable people. And we don't know if you get infected, even if you've been in Vaccinated. You may be symptomatic, but you may be able to pass it on to others. Now. The CDC data is contradicting that a bit, but the study's air still early, so they're asking everyone to wear a mask and a part of this I know is going to be the nightmare. People just same line vaccinated. And you just believe that they've been vaccinated. Are you willing to carry a card around that says I've been vaccinated, therefore, have to wear a mask. There's going to be a transition period. And I'm looking forward to the transition period where Maura people are vaccinated than not vaccinated when we're seeing numbers plummet and people are beginning to get more comfortable because then people are going to really want those masks off. The masks, and I got to tell you I'm not comfortable in them either, but they're more of a nuisance because of the statement they make or they don't the idea that you don't care about people If you don't wear a mask drives me bananas. I hate when people say that It's Zsa such a horrible thing to say, Um, When I was a little boy smoking was very common, and not too thought It was thought not to be such a threat You smoked in every building you went into of the old people that watch it tonight show the Johnny Carson show. Johnny Carson had a lit cigarette on his desk. Now. My mom loved us very, very much. We were little kids. My mom smoked. She smoked in the car, crack a window. I used to go to my grandfather's house. And there was a layer of smoke about 3 ft. Off the floor, just kind of hovering. They loved us very much. There wasn't the information there was now, but what we transition to was smoking is dangerous to smoking is the biggest killer on the planet..

"It's the mic broom head show. We've got just a few minutes left before we close it out. Sad story yesterday in a lot of people very familiar with this name in Arizona in the sports world, Pedro Gomez made while he made national news for covering very bonds in his in his run. But he also did a lot of work with the Diamondbacks and was kind of a staple in the baseball industry here, died suddenly yesterday. And I mean, suddenly, this was something that was shocking people on one of the people that knew him very well was Jeff Mon, jefe. You worked. Did you work with Paige ordered you? How Well did you know him? I fairly well I had worked with him during my time at the Diamondbacks. We stayed close and touch over the years after I left. Uh, there is, you know, you say this a lot when somebody you know passes, But this is I mean, this in the most sincere way possible. You never met a nicer, kinder man and somebody who Hey, just e Think John Feinstein, The author put it best today on Twitter. He said he never got caught up in the hole. I worked at ESPN kind of thing. Well, that's interesting is that I I didn't know him. Well, I'd met him on one or two occasions. I have a short conversation with him, but Everybody that knew him to a person. You kept hearing. What a kind hearted What a good man he was, and they did ah little piece on him yesterday about his family and going back to Cuba. And and and what? What an interesting story. Yeah, he and we talked, and I talked a number of times about his his strong emotional attachment to his home country. He and I had talked in a couple of occasions about Some of the theories behind why the regime was still in power and how hurtful it was to a lot of people who live here in the United States that are from Cuba and can't go back home. That's that's their home. Hey was it was so much more to him than just baseball or sports devoted family man. His son is ah Minor league baseball pitcher and the Red Sox organization, but just you and I'll say this, too, and I should mention this is well. One of the most creative, courageous writers I ever encountered. If he wrote something critical when he was working here. If he wrote something critical about the D backs, you could book it. He would be in the club house that night. So that whoever he criticized could confront him talked to him and Pedro would stand his ground. But he'd be there and that's rare. Mike that's really rare. You know, we we work in a very ego driven business at times and for so many people that knew him to talk about him. Being that opposite person to be is courageous as he was and as good as his job with that kind of Um, ego that it would take to be able to do that. But to not show that, in his interpersonal react about you know, in his inner personal interactions with people is pretty amazing combination never held grudges. The piece of writing that people are talking about today and I had forgotten about it. On the day of Game seven of the old one world serious, he wrote a column that basically told us all about Curt Schilling way in advance of the rest of the world finding out about he wasn't that great a guy. Uh, not that great A teammate And the story is is that when that the day that ran the day of Game seven, there were players in the clubhouse that went up and thanked Pedro for writing it. First of all you think about the timing Game seven of the world. Syriza's That's you know, that's a really difficult time to write a column like that, But that's that's who he was. He was he. Like I said, the word is courage. It's tough to write columns like that at certain times. But he had no hesitation And to do that on about the co m V P. We're talking about a player on the team. You're talking about the co m V P of that world. Syria? Yeah, and that I mean, that just takes a certain amount of guts, and he was willing to do it. He also in 1999 was the guy that basically Was the first to write that there were problems in the D'backs clubhouse with their manager Buck Showalter, that he was basically losing the veterans in the clubhouse. And that was to me. That was the first real sign that okay, we're Big League Baseball town. Now, when we got a guy writing a column like this, I had great admiration for Pedro, and it's just There's there's no way to sum up. How sad the story is. It's I I'm glad I know what last minute I asked you to come and talk about this because I knew you would know him better than anybody else. And so I appreciate you doing that. I know it's gotta it Strike you more personally than the rest of us. So thanks for doing it does And I appreciate you giving me the chance. Talk about it. Thanks, Jeff. And it's Ah. In the reason why I bring this up is because, you know, we get caught up and we do when we should. We're going to be very critical and we're gonna we're gonna have impressions of how people are based on the small snapshot in which we see them. But it was. It was a sad day for a lot of people. And I was, um, pleasantly surprised at the impact that that story made when you know it wasn't just a scroll at the bottom of the of the ESPN or on CBS before the broadcast yesterday. That it really impacted the sports world because with the person that he was, it's just a very good reminder that what we do pales in comparison to who we are. Because in the end, people are gonna remember who you are. And I hope that I hope that we all could be mindful of that. But it's a great reminder for someone who does what I do for a living that I really don't want to be known for what I do as much for who I am. And it really want makes me want to put myself.

Appreciate it is the mic Broom Head show happy Monday. We're going to talk more about this story about the challenge coins and we were just talking about this. If you're just joining us in the city of Phoenix, we're gonna do it at 9 30, Former DPS director, Former Mesa police chief Frank most Ed will join us. From a leadership position dealing with the situation that a new story creates this buzz. And what do you do or not do about it? You've got people in the city south of Cco, very upset that all of this is being made such a big deal that the chief is kind of caving into this pressure of the media. At the same time. There is a very, very precarious relationship between policing in the community and his thing. Like a story like this can do some damage and trying to get some, you know, doing some damage control here. If there is any to be done, so we'll talk more about that. If you're interested in the story at 9 30 this morning, um the president, the United States. Joe Biden and Vice President Camilla Harris will be touring the state Farm Stadium vaccination site today. Virtually I don't know how that is a big news story, but it is so the president and vice president are going to do a state farm stadium zoom call. Which I'm glad they are. I would think that everybody in the country would look at this and say we should be doing this everywhere. They did get it right When it was time to be critical of Arizona, I was critical like everyone else. What? I was critical of the things that I thought We're short comings or where they were falling short of what the standard most of it had to do with communication. But when you get something right, they deserve to get justice. Much credit. And in this case, State Farm Stadium has turned into a very, very good thing. For what we know. Phoenix Municipal Stadium will is well what they're doing it the pod sites for the county. It seems like they're starting to get things switched around. The short comings air happening with the website. Mesa resident Don revel or reveal Is 85 years old has is a condition that causes frequent breathing issues. His partner who was 84 has diabetes. If either where to catch covert 19. They fear they wouldn't make it. Their elder will receive vaccines. They don't have the Internet. So he hides it home and waits. For the state to come up with something else or death, whichever comes first. Now in one B and this is this is such an extreme case. Understanding that there are people and I'm not. This is going to sound like an ageist statement. I'm starting to fit into the older demographic as we speak. And I understand there are generational differences. Um, I know this is a silly analogy. But when they did that halftime show yesterday, um on for the Super Bowl, Yes, Yes. Yes, it did look like they Were wearing those on their face. Yes, that's what it looked like to me, too. Um, but I only knew one song that guy had ever done. I heard him do last night one. And the other part of the story was. There is a backstory to why it looked like those dancers wearing bandages on their face, which I had no clue about until Steve, who always reminds me that he's at least one generation younger than May. Knew this Do the back story. So there is a generational Gap in a lot of things, right? I could see how a lot of people would not know the weekend. Well, very well. The whats and I know this is going to sound like a stupid joke. Be care. They all were wearing bandages on their face. But that song I can't feel my face. I know that song. It reminds me of Vegas because when you go to Vegas, you here in every club you go in. Yeah, and he references Vegas a lot. Yes, songs. Yeah. So that's the only song that he did that I knew I ever even heard before. You didn't You didn't recognize blinding lights. The one he ended on? Nope. Blinded by the lights? Nope. Okay? Now I was in all the commercials, but I don't know. I don't know why I didn't associated with him and I don't know the song. My point is, we understand that there are generational gaps in things. And it's supposed to be that way. If you're 53 like I am, and you're trying to fit in with the 20 something people with your haircut in the clothes you're wearing. Stop it. I mean, you're making up your You're embarrassing yourself. I'm just trying to help. But In this case, we understand that the most critical group of people to get vaccinated after those frontline health care workers were the first responders in clan teachers. And The people in the over 65/75 age group because they are the most susceptible to getting serious illness or dying from covert 19. The Internet was an issue. The website was very clumsy and cumbersome at the very beginning, But this is a unique case where they don't even have the Internet. So the only way they can have this is through a hot line. I don't know what could have or should have been done to notify them how they could get the vaccine. We were talking now, about what I think is a great idea off getting mobile units in the city of Phoenix and other places to go into communities where travel is an issue. Kind of taking the vaccine to them. This seems like a situation where that might work because a lot of people in this age demographic with serious illnesses like this man has Would be in a long term care facility or be somewhere where they were bringing the vaccine to them. But there's no doubt that there have been issues not so much with the delivery of the vaccine, but getting appointments and using the website and it seems like they're working on curing that problem. And I'm hoping that we're all hoping that that happened sooner rather than later because we all understand how important it is getting this demographic vaccinated. In a moment, we're going to be joined by, Of course, Cato's in the big Q poll question of the day and then just after nine o'clock I agree with Chicago Teachers union on something and the vice president is coming around on opening schools. "I'm Jeff Mon on Arizona's news station K T a R news. Mike Broom head show on K T A R news 92 3 FM and the K T A R news app. Thanks for joining me this morning. It is the mic broom head show. Yesterday, the State of Education address delivered by the superintendent of public schools, Cathy Hoffman, She joins us now, Miss Hoffman. What is the big in your mind? What is the biggest hurdle in getting kids back in the classroom across the state of Arizona? Good morning, Mike. I would say our biggest hurdle continues to be the high community spread of Koga 19 in our communities. And of course, I'm very happy to see that the numbers are trending downward, and we're seeing more and more people get vaccinated. According to our school benchmarks, Every single county in Arizona is still in the red, and that's it. That's our biggest hurdle. We have to continue to take those seriously to work together as a community to do everything we can to get to a place where all schools can open safely. There are schools in Arizona right here in the Valley. Now as we speak that have been open and have been managing cases of covert 19 very well in offering. For the students and the teachers that want to be in the classroom. That option in those individual district's. Why is that? Not an option in every district? I think local context is really important in these types of situations, so I am glad that some schools have been able to manage and open and safely provide education in schools. I know in some parts of his Phoenix as well as in other parts of the state. Local context means where our families have multi generational homes where there's a lack of access to health care or families that don't even have health insurance. So For them the fear of getting sick, even if it's a more mild case brings a lot more weight with it. And so that local context really matters. You know, I provided the example yesterday of I heard from an educator. Shared with me that just last week in Tucson, one district lost six employees to Cove it They died from Cove it just just in one week. So for that community, they have been there enduring this trauma. They're coping. Their students are feeling this trauma, so I do think that local context matters. I agree with you? Absolutely. Except in those same districts. There are teachers that are crying to be back in the classroom and feel as if their voices are not heard. They're ready to go back right now. And there are students and parents that are having to take their Children to district's and other places because their district doesn't offer that so no one has said that all teachers should be back in all students should be back. But isn't it fair that the option for the families that feels safe and for the teachers that feels safe that that option is made available to them? Why is it that not fair for them? E think that's been very challenging for our school leaders to navigate. And so when we're talking about they, especially bigger district that have hundreds to thousands of employees. It's been a challenge for them to to plan for that, too, To think about. Well, how many students would show up in person? How many teachers feel safe being back in the classroom? I know we do have district Where teachers are teaching in the classroom with students and they have students learning from home at the same time, and I know from talking with teachers that that has put a lot of strain on them of trying to manage their in persons have, you know thinking of if you think about a classroom and kids their behaviors and making sure they get the attention that they need, But then at the same time on your last talk, you have a couple other students that are waiting for the attention and making sure that they understand. The content of the instruction. It's not easy, and so I think that a lot of lessons have been learned. I think again. We're all aiming for the same place of make, you know, we all want our schools to be able to offer in person instruction. But I think for some district's when they see their high spread in their communities, and they feel that having in person instruction would be putting Their students and teachers at risk. You know, that's where these really difficult decisions have been made. I understand that except the teachers are in the same frontline category when it comes to vaccinations for covert 19 with police officers and other frontline workers, which I absolutely thought was. The best thing the governor could have done was get teachers vaccinated along with those frontline workers, But every other industry including Montessori schools, college education Grocery store workers. Every industry is doing the best they can to mitigate risk, but everybody in some capacity is going back to work with the exception of these districts in K through 12, But there are teachers that want to be back in the classroom right now, and students that want to be there. The governor said that that option would be made available and it's not available in every district. I don't know how that's fair. Explain how that's fair to those families that are begging for a classroom to be open. Well again. I truly do here. These parents and families that want Children have the in person option. You know another piece to consider of this. We have seen a dramatic spike in the number of Children who have contracted covert 19 and even I'm very severe cases of Children who have been diagnosed with the multi system inflammatory syndrome. So I do think that there's so many factors to be paying attention to here. And you know when we have listened to even Dr Fauci and the national guidance around A free openings. They have made it very clear that community spread has to be a consideration, and in the recent weeks, Arizona's community spread has been over 20%. So I want to get us back to the school benchmarks, which indicates, and this was developed by public health experts that getting us under 10%. Is when we can. We can truly safely and come all come together of that's that's when it's more safer for schools to be in person. But to be fair, Miss Hoffman to be fair when the benchmarks in Arizona were well below 10% in almost all three categories, and schools were safe to be open and those benchmarks across all three categories. Those schools weren't open then, and there was no pressure put on the district that didn't want to open to open the schools even then, so those benchmarks were ignored by the school district's when they were told they were safe to open, But now they want to hold those up and say that this is the reason why they're not opening. The CDC report just said that it's safest for kids in school that the spread his community spread outside of the classroom, not in the classroom that they're not getting it at school that it's being caught outside of the classroom. So if it's the safest place for kids, Mork kids in Arizona have committed suicide this year that have died from covert 19. Why are we not saying the safest place for that? His kids where we can watch and make sure the protocol is being in here too? Well, I strongly agree with the fact that our students need access to the mental health supports. That are schools have always provided. And that's why yesterday in my state of education, I called for $43 Million to expand our school safety Grant program to provide more schools with school counselors and social workers. Because I am deeply concerned about the impact that this past year has had on our students. You may recall last November I hold a press conference with Dr Chris where I I came out directly to say that I was worried. I saw that number's trending upwards again, and I said, I took that press conference is a warning to the state to say if we continue in this trend of high community spread of covert 19 in our communities..

"I'm Jeff Mon on Arizona's news station. K t A R News, Mike Broom head show on K T A R news. 92 3 FM and the K T A R news, Adam. Thanks for being here it is the mic Broom Head show. A lot of questions in the last couple of days, had a teacher on yesterday named Heather. To explain the hurt her husband a day apart, got their got their vaccine at a county site and Chandler Gilbert and they're getting down to the wire there due to have their dose by the fourth of the fifth of February. They still can't get through to get their appointments and we began to calls and messages from all over the valley. With people being in the same position. We reached out to the county. They gave us a statement. We reached out to Dr Chris Office. And she is joining us now, Dr Crist. Let's start there with the second appointments. Are you fielding calls in your offices from people frustrated, not being able to get the second appointment at county and or state sites. Yes. So we are getting enquiries from people who are trying to get a second dose appointments both at our state Farm Stadium site as well. Assume that some of the county pods sites and so we've identified that there are a couple of technical issues that we're trying to work through toe for those individuals. And the county has set up a second dose invitation on Lee that will go out in the order. People got their vaccines, and they will be able to get their second doses as well. So then the confusion is, Should those people be going back to the site to try to find appointments? Or should they be waiting Foran additional email telling them about this invitation only. So if you attended one of the county pod sites, and so that's the Chandler Gilbert won the honor. Health Up in the North East, the Obras O or the banner on Do you need a second disappointment? I believe the banner scheduling them on sight. The others you will get an E mail as an invitation to join if you are with If you had it at State Farm Stadium, you should have received an email to schedule. If not, you can call the number on the, um on our Web site. The other thing, though, there is a group of individuals that I think about 3000 that we know that there's a very specific technical issue. We are actually calling every single person on that list. To call and schedule their appointments. Now, in the case of the teacher, they called us yesterday, her and her husband, educators got their vaccinations a day apart. They got their follow up e mails, also a day apart. And then when they went on to try to make the appointments, there were no appointments available and they continue to go on. Is there another email going out for this invitation on Lee Second Dose Bunch coming or are they going to continue to keep going online? I would believe there should be another email coming. I think the county just introduce that in the last day or two. Um and so these are by appointment on Lee and I think a lot of them are being done at the Grand Canyon University site. And so that is by invitation on Lee and it will not show up on a public site. So the state farm at State Farm Stadium. I know that what is happening now is when you get your first dose. They are making second dose appointments there. Why is that not happening at all of these sites, so it's just going to depend on the technology and the system that those sites are using? I we've identified that that's kind of a best practice moving forward. So when we open Phoenix Municipal they will be scheduling on site. I know that banner schedules on site. But it could be things like you have to have ipads in the wellness area in order to be able to do that, and so, really trying to identify what resources are needed, because we have we have identified that that has just been a huge bonus to the patients coming to state farm. All right, so for the people that are going online, I'm just going to give you some of the feedback I've gotten. You've probably heard. People have to go online and we're talking about sometimes people that are in a generation that didn't grow up with computers, and they're having to go online to try to make an appointment and they're entering all of their information. It's taking five and 10 minutes to get that information entered to get to the end of the line to find out there's no appointments and the next time they go online, they've gotta re enter all of that information again, and it's very time consuming and frustrating. Yes, And I completely agree with their frustration. I had to use the system myself to register some family members who had difficulty with it as well. We are taking all of that customer feedback. So, um, you know, we know how difficult it is. That was one of my biggest complaints was. I don't want to go in and check days that don't have appointments. Tell me when the first appointment is or tell me what days have appointments available. That will be going live next week, and we are hoping to be able to also put a fix that you don't have to re enter every time you go back a screen. So we are listening to that customer feedback because a lot of us had our very own frustrating. Um, issues with the website Dr Characteristics joining us? She's the director of the Department of Health Services here in the state of Arizona..

"Our news Partly cloudy skies today with a higher 73 Tonight Clear the low 45 right now in Phoenix. Partly cloudy skies 62 degrees. Weather is brought to you. By Howard Air. I'm Jeff Mon on Arizona's news Station. K T A R NEWS, Mike BROOM head SHOW ON K T A R News, 92 3 FM and the K T A R news app. Thanks for being here Appreciate you being with us such a little bit of time left in the show Next couple of segments Martin Luther King Day with a lot of different thoughts going through my mind where we are and how ironic it is that we are where we are with Wednesday in Washington, D C. And today is the day we celebrate the guy that was known for peaceful protest but making huge changes in the world. There's just something remarkable about the memory of Dr King. What can we learn from him? And from that movement, Um Along with that. The continued fighting we have over covert 19. There is and I don't know if maybe I'm just too close to the battle, But I have to believe there's going to be a backlash. At some point, um We have all been kind of pulling in the same direction. Sometimes we didn't want to, But we did that. We've all kind of pulled in the same direction. Everybody wants to get back to work. Everybody wants to get things done. There has been one group of people that has stubbornly acted as if they were the only ones that were unique and that they were the ones that needed to be protected more than anyone else. There have been a great analogy a long time ago. And someone said, you know that the right holds police officers in the same regard that the left old school teachers, we use the word we use the word hero. And I thought, you know what? That's a great analogy because it's true. But I will tell you that I see teachers as frontline workers and heroes as well. I always have. What I don't like, is the way that the teachers organizations, the unions have behaved the eh And they know why they've heard me talk about them for years. The funny thing is is that there are a couple of people that have had discussions with me on the air, which I respect, always have respectful disagreements with people. But the leadership of this organization has been so outrageous and the way they've behaved that they know better than that. Come on the show with me because they know that they can't win the argument because they can't answer the questions. About what they did in 2018 and trying to destroy the budget. They gave the teachers the raises, and then when they couldn't destroy the budget, they went out and brag to the teachers that it was them that got it done that kind of stuff they used. Good teachers who simply wanted to raise and they use them for their own political purposes. And when the teachers found that out, they walked away. Many of them have But what what's happening now is even worse. There are a lot of teachers out there that want to be in the classroom. There are a lot of teachers that are looking at the data that are saying kids are dying on the vine educationally that their education is falling so far behind. And that emotionally. And intellectually. It is it is damaging kids. Depression is way way up alcohol and drug use and recidivism. People that are falling back in and relapsing on addictions are way up both young and old. Um and we've got suicide thoughts, suicidal thoughts and attempts are way up. And all of this is true. And these pediatric organizations have all said that the safest and best place for kids in spite of covert 19 is in a classroom. So instead of all of these organizations trying to find the safest way to get kids in the classroom, even though there are teachers that want to be there, the teachers unions are using this as a political ploy to flex their muscle. And make their demands. And so what's happened is that we now have a battle where they're shutting down entire schools where there are teachers that want to be in the classroom for their own political gain. It's happened over and over again. It's called a sick out. I've got the video proof that they're doing it. You know, That's how that's how brazen and foolish they've become. I've got video of a girl that works in the office with the head of the A. A. She works with him. And she's bragging on the video that we can't call it a sick out, but that's what it is. That we in a backhanded way. That's what we're doing. They're proud of the fact that they're shutting the schools down where your Children go. That's my disagreement now with teachers not at all not with not with the profession off of teaching with the A and its union tactics. And the way that they have spit in the face of the parents that disagree with them. So in the Cave Creek School District this week Story is written about a teacher that's quitting one teacher. Now maybe there's more. But there is one teacher in this in this article that is quitting because, after 10 years in the district, she is being forced used her sick days if she wants to quarantine If she doesn't feel safe if she's been exposed to covert 19, and she wants the quarantine, she has to use her sick days. How many people out there and there may be some, but I guarantee you It's not the majority. How many people out there If you had to quarantine covert 19, or otherwise would have to use your sick days. The answer is all of us, I think or almost all of us number one. So what makes you special number one? But number two The reason why this is happening. Blame the union that you're a part of blame the Education Association that you're a part of because they have been using these sick days as weapons. So you weaponize your sick days where the school district's have no idea when you're gonna organize a sick out and just all of a sudden member. All it takes is 20% of teachers to not show up and it shuts the schools down and the teachers have they can't teach. It shuts down online learning it shuts it all down. So they have been weaponizing. They're sick days by organizing sick outs, and then they faint indignation and they're angry and they feel like they're not supported when They have to use their sick days when they quarantine It is. This is a political game. That they started. The teachers unions using sick days is weapons, which violates their contract. It's against the rules they could be fired for it. And what they've done is they have slapped the parents in the face that want their kids in school. At some point, there's got to be a backlash. I would think at some point parents on both sides of the issue. There have got to be some parents out there that don't think it's safe for their kids to be in school yet that understand that the parents that want their kids in school have a right to be there. And no one is asking teachers to teach that don't want to be in the classroom. The request has been if you want to be in the classroom, teacher and student, we're going to make that available to you. Well, there are school districts that are refusing open up until March Now. March. The effectively shut down for an entire school year. And wow, our the great great kids grades are suffering. And yet, this is the union fight that's going on. And I've said before I'll say it one more time today. I don't expect you to take my word for anything. Try to get on to an a A message board. Normally watching a congressional debate is like watching paint dry. It is not exactly must see TV, but they're on occasion. There are things that happened and I think that a historic And that are important. And in this case, this has got all of the above second time for impeachment of this president shows again that it plays into the president's hands when he talks about how they this has been a witch hunt. It absolutely has been, and I don't agree with any of this, and it has absolutely nothing to do with political leanings. People want to move forward and want to look forward Joe Biden, seven days from right now will be the president of the United States. The nation then has work to do. We've got to move this administration transfer the power to a new administration with the implementation and the distribution of the vaccine must continue. Something has to be done to keep businesses afloat while we work towards some sense of normalcy, and we're going to watch a complete change in policy. In Washington, D. C Because for the first time in quite a while, the Democrats will have control of the presidency, The House and the Senate. So working together is going to be much easier for them without that block being there with the Republicans in the Senate. Judicial nominations and appointments are going to be much easier through the Senate Judiciary Committee, which is the longest lasting legacy of any president. Policy shifts. Laws that will be made a lot of these things are very, very important and I'm gonna be made easier. We should be looking in that direction and debating whether or not where we're going is the right way to go. And why..

"Partly cloudy skies today with a high of 68 Tonight Clear the low 39 Right now in Phoenix. Partly cloudy skies 52 degrees Whether is brought to you. By Howard Air. I'm Jeff Mon on Arizona's news station K T A R news. Mike Broom head show on K T A R news 92 3 FM and the K T A R news app. Hey, thanks again for being here. I appreciate you being with us. So here's what's happening on impeachment just if people are paying attention. The debate has begun. It's about a two hour debate period were expected. Somewhere between one and two o'clock this afternoon, There will be a vote in the House of Representatives on impeachment. So one more reason to be listening this afternoon to get us and Chad those guys who get you caught up on all of the news as it happens, and when it breaks, you know we're all over it. So download the case to our news up. That's where we are on impeachment. Um In Arizona lawmaker There's more than one There is a movement and I don't disagree with it, And I think for the governor's perspective, it's a good idea as well. I don't know how the governor feels about this. But there's a guy in the representative in the house named Brett Roberts, who is, um Has a resolution that the measure restricted and suppressed the individual freedoms of economic prosperity of Arizonans. What they're trying to do is get rid of the executive order by the governor on covert 19 when he put out in March. There is a similar resolution happening over in the Senate by Magellan. Michelle You gente Rita, who was a senator from Scottsdale. And as far as I know, when I could be completely wrong As far as I know, this isn't about a major disagreement. Between the governor and all these legislators. But what what it is is that first of all the executive order process is necessary. I think anyone who has watched American politics At the state level local level or at the federal level. You understand the wheels turn very slowly. We were just joking about the impeachment vote. They had a vote. To approve the resolution that they were going to vote on. So it's we're fixing to get ready to do something is what they're doing. They're so the wheels and they're made to turn slowly in many cases, But when things need to be expedited when you got to get something done expeditiously, the executive order process is there and so it is a viable necessary piece of American government. The problem lies when a governor or or a president over steps and instead of getting a piece of legislation agreed upon in the House and the Senate for that governor to sign they try to make legislation on their own, which you can't do that violates the separation of powers laws. They're supposed to be written by the state Legislature voted on in each of the chambers and then go to the governor's desk for signature. I mean, I know I'm giving you a civics lesson you don't need, but that's what happens. In this case it was necessary to use the executive order process. When the Legislature is not in session. The governor has to act in some of these ways. Well, now that they're back in session, the house and the Senate should have a say in a lot of these things, especially when they dramatically affect what's happening in Arizona. When you're talking about which businesses to restrict. When you're talking about how to restrict them. How long to restrict them? One of the benchmarks going to be to taking those restrictions away, One of the punishment's gonna be for violations. All of those things are supposed to be done Legislate. Lady of league. And then you take that to the governor, and then the governor signs it or vetoes it, But another thing to do in Arizona. Just leave it And if you don't sign it, you don't veto it. It just becomes law without a signature. In this case, I think that there should be more input. You are talking about a diversity in the state where different areas are affected in different ways. The densely populated parts of Maricopa County Are completely different. Then the sparsely populated northern Arizona towns. And the way they may handle things need to handle things based on population based on density, But based on resource is might need to be different, or at least come from a different perspective. And so the reason why we have elected officials are so that we have a representative Republic and when you have the executive order in place, It also hinders the governor and I'll tell you The governor and I I I've said it just to be for those of you that are new to the show. Thank you, but, um I do know the governor fairly. Well. I've known him for a long time. I'm not saying this to defend him. I'm just making an observation. It's a thankless job. When things like this happen. I didn't agree with everything the governor did. I didn't agree with the way the governor did a lot of things. I never second guessed his decisions because I'm not in his shoes. Did second guessed the lack of communication for a while. And I felt like we weren't communicated with enough. That's my personal feeling. And, you know, it's not easy for me to come on and criticize someone. A that I like very much and be when I know they're in the thankless position, because you know, when you make a decision, you're gonna have half the population angry with you. He's a businessman and to give orders. That say we're going to shut down businesses realizing what that does to a business owner had to be a very tough decision to make. So I was, it's a thankless job. Having the ability with legislative input, getting something that is being debated in the House and the Senate getting something that both sides agree on that the governor agrees he will sign is how things are supposed to be done. There is a negotiating process. And so you know whether or not people believe it's too strict or not strict enough. You're going to make people you're gonna have people that aren't happy, but the process of expert witnesses and expert input. And coming up with a comprehensive plan, especially now, with what we know and what we've been through. The decisions are going to be a lot different now. And you can see the governor's policies have changed dramatically. My friends were in business owner friends especially were furious about the shutdowns. They seemed arbitrary. They didn't seem like they were doing really any good. We did see a dramatic drop off in case is why when I say it didn't do any good Especially to their businesses, and we did see that bounce back in cases as soon as we opened things back up again. So there were those that wanted to just kind of ride it out and get the herd immunity. Manage what we can manage cases, and there are people that still feel that way. But that's why you have a process of legislation. And I think that they're right in wanting a voice. I think they are correct, according to the Constitution and saying, We're in session now this is something that needs to be legislated. So it's when is something closed. Why is something closed? How is something closed? How do we reopen them? What is punishments for violations? That is a comprehensive piece of legislation..

"It's 9 31. I'm Jeff Mon, Here's our top story. Coronavirus in Arizona. Nearly 300 new coronavirus Steps reported today. Many due to death certificate matching 197 deaths exactly reported today. 238 or due to death certificate matching. This is the second time this week that Arizona has set a new daily death report record 9913 new cases and more than 15,700 new diagnostic tests for report. This morning Coronavirus Hospital metrics continued to rise. Taylor Kenter up key to our news. The latest surge of covert 19 patients is stressing banner hospitals there. Chief clinical officer Dr Marjorie Vessel says that times they've had to put two patients in one room. Elective surgeries have also been halted and nurses they're having to take on more patients. "Jeff Mon on Arizona's news Station. K T A R NEWS, Mike Broom head SHOW on K T A R News. 92 3 FM and the K T A R news after Hey, thanks So much for being with me this morning. Of course. All eyes are on Georgia's still we're watching. What's happening there this late this morning, 11 O'clock Arizona time will begin the count to the Electoral College. Arizona expected to be challenging around 10 after 11 will carry that live here. But a lot still happening here in the state of Arizona, the state Legislature and what is happening within the state. So one of our representatives, Jon Kavanaugh, from Fountain Hills, asked for an opinion from the attorney general's office. Mark Burner Bitch about rescinding the governor's executive order on covert 19 from back in March of 2020. So representative Cavanaugh is joining us now. Ah, why asking about rescinding what would be the point of Resending the executive order if you're able to do it? Well, it's actually a very complex question, because the people who wrote this finally when it was written, really left a lot of loopholes and unanswered questions. So I mean the first question that I I'm we're going to be addressing this issue. Obviously. So the first question I asked the attorney general is, uh was basically is it all or nothing doesn't legislate to have to vote to totally eliminate the governor's measures or Can the Legislature moderate or reduce them? The second question is, if we eliminated them will reduce them. Could the governor turn around the next day and re issue them? But the Lord is silent on that. Uh, the other big issue that we're talking about is what about local governments? Ah, lot of people want to get rid of the governor's Coben measures because they think that they're they're you know too much. But unanswered question is if the governor if we terminate the governor's emergency powers will that unleash every county and municipality to impose their own emergency powers because it looks like What's controlling the local governments and counties now are the governor's emergency orders. Which state that because the law says that that no local government can have a Lord inconsistent with the governors. Governor. Ducey has not imposed overly oppressive measures. Certainly compared to other states. I mean, what pretty much open for business, so the concern that I have is if we were to have the votes to terminate the emergency powers. With that suddenly unleash Phoenix, Tucson, Flagstaff two to put in totally draconian measures that some of their elected people have been talking about. So trying to get the answers when, when you look at that, and let's start with those three cities. The problem with that is, I'm sure you know is that if Phoenix would implement so it's kind of draconian measures. Shut down restaurants again. That would benefit Scottsdale in Glendale in Peoria and the neighboring cities Chandler because you would just go across city lines and be able to still do those things, which would severely hurt businesses in Phoenix and not too much good, But are you looking for? Let's say the rescinding of this. Are you looking for the Legislature to have a seat at the table when these decisions are made? Are you? What? What would be the goal of doing this? Yeah, well, I'm on a special committee that's looking into this and I'm not going to address this because we probably need some modification. One of the problems is that the Lord allows both chambers of the Legislature to terminate the orders. By majority vote, But that only works when we're in session, because if we're out of session, it takes the signatures of two thirds of the members in both chambers. To go back into session unless the governor calls us so if people want to restrict or eliminate the governor's orders, you know the governor's not gonna call us in. So that means when we're not in session, even though majority in both chambers and the emergency orders, it takes two thirds of the members to sign on to go in to do that, so it's really a two thirds at that needs to be corrected. On. A lot of people want to see an automatic review of the governor's orders after 30 60 90 days where we automatically come back in and have tea. Oh, you know, approve of them or or modify them or let them continue, But that's one proposal. Yeah, we all understand that Executive order processes necessary when things need to be expedited, But I think you're right that the ability for the Legislature away in and not give so much power to the executive branch is the right thing to do. And if I were the governor with everything that's going on with covert, I wouldn't want to go with this alone anymore. Either. I would want the input of the Legislature grab. Absolutely. And by the way, it's not about this governor because anything we other than you know, going back and ending the orders. Any modifications that we make to the law for the future. We would probably be for a different governor. Because thank God these thieves, pandemic type things only occur, you know, decades apart. Um, What have you had Any conversation, your committee and a conversation with the governor's office about the order? No, no, no. I mean, well, I mean, I was thinking back. I mean, I have I have spoken on numerous occasions with the governor's office. Legislative liaison. You know, you know, passing on you. No complaints. Suggestions? You know, I'm the last one I called about had to do with Why aren't we getting additional vaccines to take into account that we've got a whole lot of people from? You know snowbirds from Minnesota and Wisconsin and the Dakotas down here? I mean, they gave these vaccines out based on state population, But during this time period, we are greatly increased by these other state residents moving here, But we don't get extra, you know, and they were amenable to that. And I believe that they're talking to DC, about getting some extra Vaccines to take that into account. If you were to have you the way you would want it, what would you like to see? Eliminated or changed with the executive order from the governor? Well, I would decriminalize it first off. I mean, I don't. I think it's crazy to make it a crime for somebody like not to wear a mask or something like that. S so I think that's the really big thing I would like to, you know, I would not have any limits on on gatherings. As long as there's reasonable safety precautions taken on. I certainly would, you know on the governor doesn't like the governor has actually prohibit a lot of the stuff that people don't like that's happening in other states. One of the things that governor put in. One of his emergency orders is that no county or municipal government can put in measures stricter than hiss. So he's actually controlled a lot of really wild suggestions. Like you know, like curfews. We can't even leave your house, shutting down indoor dining I we just had a briefing from the joint from our joint legislative budget budget staff, non Protestant We're actually looking at a surplus of revenue because of good economic activity in Arizona somewhere in the area 1.5 to $2 billion, and that's because We didn't shut down like other states did so, you know, Overall, I'd like to see things loosened a bit electricity decriminalization, But I think people have to realize that the governor has kept a lot of stuff open. You know, there was some shaky starts The gym's I thought, God, you know, short changed movie theaters, but you know, overall, I'm not that upset. What's happening? I'd like to see some trimming, but not not that much. I don't want to eliminate completely. Because that could be a problem. Well, I always appreciate your willingness to come on and look forward as session goes on his things move forward. I'd love to see where this goes and have you come on again. Okay, I'll be more than happy to, you know? All right, thanks. That is a that is represented John Kavanagh from Fountain Hills with a little bit of a clarification what they're looking for and saying that there's a lot of loopholes and it exist in the existing laws and the way they are. He's looking for clarification, if not for this governor, but for things in the future to clarify what the governor can do what the Legislature is able to do in response. And then how things play out. What does that trigger? So it Zach Chua Li a little bit more than just about Cove it, but that's a representative Jon Kavanaugh. Joining us for a few moments talking about the distribution of the vaccine, and that's what he had just alluded to..
