Bill Gates looks back at ‘The Road Ahead’ after 25 years and some hit-and-miss tech predictions

"Is sometimes cop to the criticism that on this show. We tend to focus on the horse race between the big tech companies. Who's up who's down. Who like roadblocks might be a godzilla of the future and who like maybe intel seems to be sliding towards being an irrelevant dinosaur of the past. The way i like to think about it is that we're covering the evolution and creative destruction of capitalism in real time keeping score of who's the richest person in the world is probably less relevant to that task but only obliquely so for what it's worth. It's worth noting that elon. Musk has overtaken bill gates to become the world's second richest person behind. jeff bezos. Quoting the verge. The tesla ceo net worth now sits at around one hundred twenty eight billion dollars after increasing by one hundred billion dollars this year alone. There is a sizable gap between. Musk and the number one spot which is currently held by amazon ceo. Jeff bezos who has reported net worth of around one hundred and eighty two billion dollars in january. Musk ranked thirty fifth on the list. Bloomberg reports musk's rapid ascent up. The list has mainly been driven by tesla share price. The car company currently has a market cap of almost five hundred billion dollars after starting the year at under one hundred billion dollars. The guardian reports that tesla has the highest market cap of any car company in the world despite producing a fraction of the cars of more established automakers. This year it expects lose. Five hundred thousand cars compared to around ten million for a company like toyota around three quarters of musk's net worth consists of tesla shares according to bloomberg but musk's other major venture space x has also seen recent success last week the company transported for astronauts to the international space station aboard. It's crew dragon spacecraft that follows the company's first crewed flight to space in may of this year bill gates sat atop the billionaires index for years until he was overtaken by jeff bezos in two thousand seventeen bloomberg notes. That gates would probably have a higher net wealth right now if he hadn't given so much money to charity including the over twenty seven billion dollars. He's donated through the bill and melinda gates foundation since two thousand six gates. Moscow have had some high profile disagreements this year in september. Musk said gateshead quote no clue about the viability of electric trucks after the microsoft co-founder said that electric semi trucks along with electric cargo ships and passenger jets will probably never be practical earlier. This year gates told cnbc that musk should avoid making big predictions about areas. He's not familiar. After the tesla's ceo downplayed the risk of the covid nineteen pandemic. Local Teen’s ‘Big Year’ Breaks Chicago's Cook County Birding Record

"At all. But I have to say one of my favorite things of the fall, and it's It's happened for 10 years or so now. Are they both up there? Well, the so is is when the sand hill cranes fly over and I can hear them and they sound like this count to me. Sounds like turkeys, but they fly high in the air, and I was out for a walk it Ryerson Woods over this weekend. And heard them and was able to see them. I just think it's one of the coolest things. Carl Giammetti is on phone line. He is with the board member of the Chicago Order, Ornithology logical society. There's a story behind that I was too long to tell. And also on a phone line is issue. O'Brien, who set the record for most birds, identified for this year in Cook County for a year, I should say And issue is 17 years old issue. Welcome to W G. N Thank you so much for having me. You bet. Okay, so I didn't know you know what I'm talking about? What? Sandhill cranes. I'm sure right? Yes, I do. And this is the time that they're flying overweight. They fly way up above us. And but you can hear them. They're incredibly loud. Yeah, There are some incredible birds and they will migrate in really huge flocks. They make a lot of noise, too. So I think they definitely stand out to a lot of people whether or not your burger. But anyway yeah. Some of the most incredible migrating birds that passed through this area without a question. Okay, So you have identified well as of the copy I read in the Tribune 282 Birds. Is that where we're standing still? Um, I've actually gained a few more sense than, um I'm hoping that maybe I'll be lucky enough to hit the 2 90 marks, but we'll see one of the most recent ones you've seen. I'm sorry, but I think that I've added a couple. Um, some nice winter finches have been a highlight about it. Evening. Gross speak as well as the white Wing Cross. Still, another one has been spotted Toey and I'm blanking on other 10. The other one. How could I forget? Um, a cast in Sparrow, which is actually Um, one of the very few records of the species in the steak s. Oh, without question one of the most notable birds on my year list for sure. Sandhill cranes sound like for everyone. I'm glad you're okay. And it's just one of those sounds When I hear it. I just look up and I'm always raking leaves or walking somewhere in the fall, So that's pretty cool. Carl Geum Eddie is on the phone line as well from the Ornithological society in his Carl. So my producer Jeff Garlin. All day was mispronouncing and I said, Don't do it again because I want people to do it on the air, and then I screwed it up. But so issues having a quote unquote big year explain what a big year is for me. So essentially what a big year is that Ah Burger will choose a geographic area can be something that small is just your yard or could be something is largest the entire world. But county and state levels are usually probably the most popular ones to do because they're more manageable. And basically from January 1st at you know, at 12:41 A.m. 2 December 31st 11 59 pm You try to see his many different species of bird as you can. The nice thing about this story that I read in the Tribune, um, written by Morgan Green is the cooperation that's involved with other burgers to help someone in their big year. Can you tell me about that? Absolutely. Yeah, it's who did an incredible job, and especially with the added complication of covert closing a lot of like front sights. Hey, really discovered a lot of areas but really tol have a successful big year requires a lot of people sharing information about what birds they're seeing, and that's why I like to kind of say It's obviously issues achievement. He is deserve all the credit. But it also says something about the health of Ah local birding community that they're able to support new, big your records and things like that. So it's really a great thing to see. So is to explain that so you're a home watching TV or having dinner with your family, your phone chirps and all of a sudden, well chirps. How's that for upon you've got to get in the car and chased down the bird. Yeah, that is pretty much how it goes, I think Right now. We're very lucky to live in a time where we have technology at our fingertips. And I think with it a lot of birds as well because people are able to get the word out so quickly. So as soon as I get a call from a friend or a text message from our local Rare bird alert group chat. I will be in the car soon as I possibly can. And how? What's the further you? Did? I read your live in Evanston. Yeah. Okay, So if you're going to Southern Cook County or even Northwestern Cook County that's quite a hook. What's the farthest you've gone to wreck your to identify a bird? I think this year. I mean, I think I've gone is pretty much as far as the boundaries of cook County could take me. Um I'd say probably an hour and hour and 15 minutes is about as far as I've gone you've identified you said about 288 birds so far. You'd like to get to 300 Carl, how many different bird species are in Cook County? Well, you know, it varies based on you know, kind of weather patterns and the type of your it is some years we got more vagrants, Other others we don't but generally believed the cook list is somewhere close to 400. I think a few short of 400 here. So, Yeah, I

Guild Esports Banned For Cheating

"Competitive integrity. It's a perfect segue. Okay This is from Collect points dot com and the headline here was riot. Disqualifies guilty sports from valerie. I strike you. Social media follows so everyone knows guilty. Sports they paid twenty million dollars to david beckham To have any sports team. And now they have a team that has been essentially banned from valerien first-strike which is the the tournament that riot is putting on and the reason is that in a previous match. They had exploited essentially a bug in the game. So there was a bug in the game that allowed guild to to have a view that was not normally sort of possible basically By exploiting a bug so they had better vision than their opponent as a consequence of exploiting this bug and and essentially they've been banned as a consequence and social backlash. the social media backlash was. Hey you know. It's it's unfortunate. But like they used. They exploited a bug. You left in your game right if you didn't want people to exploit it. You should have fixed the bug. That's kind of the counter argument. I'm curious where all three of you fall on this from a competitive integrity standpoint. Since we know lindsey so loose on competitive integrity this should not bother you at all right now exploring you the bug big deal. Leave them in. Is that how you feel is. Is anyone familiar. With the story of civilization kelly son who ran one of the essentially kelly sign was a gambling wizard who ran achieve at Reading diamond patterns on cards. In a way that i will literally never understand in casinos and her in phil ivey ran a one hundred million dollars scam around the world scam around the world because dealers would use her cards in this game that she was able to read and dealers accepted her cards. Use them when she was able to read them win a. I don't know how that could be any all except for the dealers to agree to use her car. Did not the house car Exact thing to me just as they any doesn't mean that they should get paid for it so you think even though it's a bug and the bug that because the publisher leaves it in the game. It's okay jeff. You agree with that. I think i grew that unless you know if this was a i guess i'm not familiar enough This above everyone knew about and it was in the rules of the need aac. Don't use this bug. I don't know how many new the bug existed but guild was the only one that exploited it view that as competitive ingenuity. I mean i'm a. I'm a jets fan unfortunately but you we always lament as the patriots. They seem to every you know. Every year they have. Bill comes up with some ingenious somewhat. Corrupt immoral micra jets and you will never hear patriots man call bill. Belichick's maneuvers corrupt. But but but it's the way they've been the rules within the rules of the game but it's sort of grey areas and yet. I don't think there's anything wrong with that process at grudgingly. You know as long as you're within the rules of the game so if something wasn't right now let wall prior. I think it's a bogus to come back and say after game. Hey you broke some. We didn't actually happen place. That's weird to me. I mean william are you. Is this like unanimous agreement. Here you think this is okay. You're you're muted william. He still goes. Okay is just one hundred. And twenty-fifth show your muted william. You're my friend. Go there we go. How about that is that this is the rare times. I got to pull out my team owner card canada's okay team start at. I actually have a pro team. That competes in valerie. Went in. I strike right now. We're actually ranked above guilty sports. Shout out. I think we're top. Five number five in the rankings. Right now but And invalid rights. I know about this three earliest first of all all of the time. There are soft bands enforced by teams and players for things that you could theoretically doing the game but the competitive said. You can't do the most classic example is skins right. Publishers wanted to all these crazy cool skins but actually some of them have competitive advantage right and so usually and most competitive e sports. There's a soft list of banned skins which are like. Hey we know you could pick these skins but like don't do it because they're not okay. They don't differentiate enough from the background on this map or saying like oh the publishers left in the game so it's their fault like there's just tons of things you're not allowed to do that are left in the game right now and everybody accepts that. So that's one two is. It's very clearly an exploit in a bug right like yes. It's a view that you can technically normally achieve. But it's very clearly an expert in a bug and four competitive broadcast matches. You don't typically take advantage of exploits in bugs. For exactly this reason you recognize there is a risk versus reward profile. Which is if you are taking advantage of a bug and you know the public or like riot has a very firm anti exploit policy. You're living on the razor's edge. And i think this very simply came down to g. Two is probably the strongest team in europe. right now they're ranked number one in almost all the rankings. I think guild really felt they needed an edge and decided to roll the dice on this. And guess what if you use an exploit and it is bad and people know about it and like you rolled the dice. There you are you. Should you should get the details. So i understand the frustration because it's a great story. It's a new team. They're doing really bell they built they beat an entrenched leader in g. Two and i think as much as has fans they're more and more being known as the bad guy out of europe right but like the reality is like you know. It's the same way you got a red card and soccer if you fall down and fake fake a trip right like yes sometimes you get away with it and in the tough games maybe s take a dive and hope the rap doesn't say but if he got called the red card and you lived with that and i think that's the situation here

Conflicting Views : Aviation Will Need 27,000 New Pilots in 2021 as Shortage Continues Despite Downturn

"Nick. You're the one that Included this in our news segment and so oversee user. You thought this was Very interesting because it just shows two sides of the same coin We're talking really about New pilot training so the fast article. was trying to Casey who wrote it. sauce ca For the picture came from could be flight fly. Global is the one that had the article. Okay so they article is Aviation will need twenty seven thousand new pilots in twenty twenty one. That's not far away. Despite the industry slump and massive layoffs global civil aviation industry will require twenty seven thousand pilots up over the All Record of a million in the coming decade The full cost comes from the canadian. That's why i say i hate hate. They don't have a new. They're saying This number of active policies declined Between eighty seven thousand By around eighty seven thousand to around three hundred thousand but we bump up to an estimated. The other side of the coin came from The british airline pilots association and was video giving a warnings to People who are thinking of starting a career now and investing. The market is likely to be so depressed over the next few years that they're saying that we would recommend you hold off a making any big decisions about when to start your flying training. If you want to. And i have to say i would. A hundred percent agree before you start training. It's relatively easy having not yet made a a financial commitment to Go find yourself another job for a couple of years. Watch the market see what is actually happening with their lines whether their blossoming and whether things happening But once you've made a commitment and you throw all that money at it If you come out the other end and the market still depression. Ick stephan how does bulgaria's history and it's complex ethnic makeup show itself in your cuisine. It's interesting question because we have always been. At across of civilizations turks greeks mediterranean culture slavic culture and all of these different cultures they reflect in our cuisine. And this is the reason why. Our cuisines has many specifics. Okay so you're gonna take me out to dinner and we're going to demonstrate that. What are some dishes that would illustrate the many different invasions that bulgaria has endured the first and most traditional dishes actually liquid. It's our alcoholic beverage. Here rakiya we start every meal with rakiya typically made of grapes or other fruits while we're waiting for ourselves to come. We hear foley. Our first sakir finished your drink the rookie through the meal. Exactly okay. So the first course would be solid kind of salad may have the most traditional one East coat subsc. Sarut literally means a solid from subscribe region this region our capital cities software. So around sophea. But i find that every meal all across bulgaria the beloved chops ca salad. Yes it's like our traditional south in every single restaurant from the obscure the most upscale restaurants to those in the remote villages. This is a must on the menu. If you are familiar with the greek salads. It'll be something close tomatoes cucumbers onions peppers. The best peppers are not the robust but roasted peppers roasted peppers s and on the top. You put some cheese. Typically countries couches. Yes and increase it a slab cheese. Yes is a slab of jason here. We grated cheese. Stefan when you eat the very best shops ca salad. You've been eating at all your life in connecticut. This is really good. Why is it really good. really good. What distinguishes a chops salad. I this is the cheese. The cheese chase is important and the other thing the peppers. they must be roasted in some restaurants. They don't want to work quite much in the kitchen. So they're all but roasted peppers and cheese. I've catcher this is travel with rick steves. You're talking stephan. Both jeb about garin cuisine. Okay you've had your salad. What comes next after salad. It came to the main course. Our main course. We have one very traditional shot in a soul this mixture of different herbs. This is a sauce. It's not a sauce. It is sort salt. Yeah it's okay. Bold colorful sought and different herbs. So red paprika sage savory everything put together and we dip our breath insight and we just enjoy. That sounds very good. Do you have an influence of greece. Greece's a big culture and and a lot of ways. You have the similar environment in your cuisine. What sort of greek flavor would you find for sure. One of the most traditional meals that bulgarians belief. It is bulgarian. It is the moussaka sexually coming from our southern neighbours from from the greeks but here in our version we add just minced meat and potatoes. We don't at zucchini or eggplant inside. No potatoes mainly towards the potatoes and and the minced meat in greece. Of course they have a lot of these appetizers. You have this way of serving people family style plates yes. It is also very popular in bulgaria. The missouri style intellectually is the same word that we use for that. We have different. Appetizers some Cheese some dry sausages and also different dips. Now i'm remembering some beautiful cold soup kind of a vegetable called supporters that this is called the the atar. It is very traditional bulgarian soup during the summer. It consists of yogurt chopped cucumbers garlic. Do walnuts and a few drops of olive oil on the top sound just beautiful. Yes and it saves us during the hot summer days because it can be quite hot in the summer. Yes that's very possible. You talked about the Grilled peppers in the shop salad. But also i remember when i go to a restaurant. There's a lot of stuffed peppers as part of the main course. Yes stuffed peppers. Flipping the Stress Switch

"Hi i'm jeff. So when i was a little kid when i get stressed out about something my mum would sit me down and go. Yeah but honey think about all the people having problems in other parts of the world. It made me feel both wes alone. And my problems were more manageable. So this meditation is dedicated to the wisdom of my mom. It's about getting perspective around stress. I by changing how we experience stress in our bodies and then by seeing if we can connect it to a larger perspective. So let's go the is can be open or closed. We start by taking a few deep breaths so here stretching on the inhale and then on the sale that's kind of downward motion the the relaxing softening so nice long out breath as you do. This just imagine you can breathe out any tension. The belly softens the shoulders. Relax okay good so this. First part of the practice is about exploring how we experience stress in our own body mines so notice where you're experiencing stress right now. How do you know your stress. What are the telltale signs in your body. How is stress coming up for you right now to a little survey so now we're going to do this move. We're going to try to do this. One eighty turn here and try to reframe the way we experience this. We call all this stress but really that's just a word. It's an idea before any idea stress. There's just sensations. The question is can you begin to experience. What was once stress has just different. Sensations happening in flowing sensations connected to other sensations. Saw them slowly changing. You're like oh weather pattern. So seeing if we can experience ourselves ads this swirling pattern of sensations. Obviously our problems are real but we also have the capacity to put them in perspective to see them as part of this larger story. Okay relaxing here. Just chill out here on our cosmic stoop. Nice long exhale just being in your body when you're ready can open your eyes if they were closed and notice how you feel now versus when you began

Hurricane Iota batters Central America

"Devastating devastating devastating devastating devastating devastating hurricanes hurricanes hurricanes hurricanes hurricanes hurricanes have have have have have have pummeled pummeled pummeled pummeled pummeled pummeled Central America on November 3rd hurricane at the first struck Nicaragua and then made its way to Honduras and Guatemala. According to the Red Cross. More than two million people in the region were affected by floods and landslides caused by the hurricane. Then this week, another hurricane Hurricane iota made landfall in Central America delivering yet another blow to the region. The two storms back to back aren't only devastating to communities in Central America, but are also complicating efforts to mitigate covert 19. Joining us now to talk about what's happening on the ground is Jeff EARNS two freelance journalist based in Honduras. Jeff Thanks for being with us For having me. So what are conditions on the ground in Honduras right now? Right now. Much of Honduras is underwater, particularly in the Northwest Sula Valley region, which is home to about two million people, and it's really the economic motor. Of the country, So the fact that so much of this area in particular is underwater is really indicative of how damaging it is. Given that roughly 40% of the GDP or more is produced in this region, but really after iota we have much more widespread damage. A lot across the whole country was a much larger storm. So just particular across the North Coast and and the West, there's still rising waters in some parts. We've lost a lot of bridges and roads and other infrastructure. There's many people are currently displaced by the flooding. The storm's first struck Nicaragua before going through Honduras and Guatemala. What were the effects in those two countries? With a to it was damaging. But it went through a pretty lowly populated area of Nicaragua. But iota was so much larger. That it really hit harder in Nicaragua, and even the winds were harder to sew. In Nicaragua. We're seeing pretty widespread damage flooding even in the capital, Managua. And south of it to Nicaragua's pretty devastated this 0.2. You've been reporting on this region in Honduras for awhile have how have the government's responded to efforts on the ground? The government's response has been heavily criticized ahead of eight actually scheduled this special holiday for that week week in in order order to to try try to to Remote Remote domestic domestic tourism tourism and and stimulate stimulate the the economy, economy, which which has has been been really really hit hit hard hard by by the the cove cove in in 19 19 pandemic, and there was a clear reticence by the government to Cancel that vacation, so they did not emit alerts or or evacuation orders, which led Tens of thousands of people in completely caught off guard being and then ended up getting trapped on the roof, some for as many as five days. And, of course, That led to two more deaths, which we really don't know how much yet because the water Has never been able to fully received from eight to before We got hit by iota, so there's really clear negligence by the government here and then in terms of responding They're completely overwhelmed by it. And they clearly unprepared and there's a real question of how they're spending. Their resource is the government just a year ago. Just from Israel. This Folks from war and yet their emergency response unit doesn't have the boats necessary to go to the healthy, strong currents that was seen from the footing in order to rescue people. Until the water gets down. The people are very upset, definitely more than ever with with the government and this could definitely lead to even more political instability than we've seen down here in the past and that political instability Could also sperm or migration out of the region. Is that right? Coming towards where? There That's the United States are moving towards Mexico or other places this people try to survive. Absolutely. There's already people organizing on social media caravans that looks like they're planning for January, most of them whether or not that materializes. There's just no doubt we're going to see it another tick in migration over the next year, particularly As Kobe 19 travel Strick Shins are eased. I took so many people already. Particularly the young people who just see no opportunity. They have no work, and now they've lost everything. They really have nothing to lose, and they see migrating as the quickest way to be able to help their families to rebuild and and recoup everything they've lost. United States government has limited at least one of the Trump administration migration from many of these countries. At the same time, it's asked many Central American countries to help it with its asylum policies. Has the U. S government sent any aid? To these countries as they struggled to deal with the blows from these hurricanes. The lack of leadership from the U. S. Following this crisis is really Shocking. There's been no word from the State Department or from the White House, other than U S aid, which is down here most recently after Iota they designated $17 million to the region. Half of which is going to Honduras and then Also the U. S. Military, based on here has been a source of rescue missions, which has definitely been very helpful. But $17 million We're talking about billions and billions of dollars in damage. And really in 1998 when Hurricane Mitch hit, which is the worst natural disaster in center America To date, it was US leadership that mobilized support from the global community. And that is completely lacking at this point. President elect Biden has expressed his concern and support for the region, so there's hope that when he takes office He will take up that traditional leadership role of the U. S. To help one of its neighbors will be watching to see how this pans out. Jeff earns two freelance reporter based in Honduras. Thanks for being with us and stay safe. Thanks for having me

Climate Activists Want Biden To Bar Appointees With Fossil Fuel Ties

"Joe biden has an ambitious climate plan and there are a lot of people with government experience. Who could help implement that plan. But some of them have ties to fossil fuel industries and that is a problem for climate change activists. Npr's jeopardy reports in philadelphia recently. A group of young climate activists marched to biden's campaign headquarters. The sunrise movement often pressures democrats. Back the green new deal but instead biden offered his own climate plan for a slower transition away from coal oil and gas. He has not committed to barring people with fossil fuel ties from his administration. Lauren martinez was sunrise. Thinks he should biden ran on the most progressive climate agenda in us history and one on it. So it's incumbent upon him to take that seriously and put forward people who are accountable to the people that elected him to office the head of the natural resources defense council and former epa administrator gina mccarthy says she understands why young activists want to ban on appointees connected to fossil fuels especially after trump. Put them in key posts including andrew wheeler a former coal industry lobbyist. I mean that's who has been running the environmental protection agency and has gotten us nowhere fast. It's backed us up. It hasn't supported a growing clean energy economy. But here's a problem with a fossil fuel will litmus test biden won't govern alone the us senate could remain under republican leadership that means passing legislation would require compromise and bradbury is ceo of the american exploration and production council. Americans voted for divided government. As part of that you know. I think they voted for moderation. And i think they voted for commonsense. Bradberry sees a future for fossil fuels even under biden's ambitious plan for net zero carbon emissions by twenty fifty worried about climate. Change say there are issues. Republicans and democrats likely can agree on heather. Reams was citizens for responsible. Energy solutions suggests activist focus on things like economic stimulus that boost clean energy. They should looking at the bigger policies and getting to what's possible with getting climate action done today rather than arguing about the position on one's resume among the names on the biden transition team a few have limited ties to fossil fuel but more are from environmental groups. Jody freeman served as councillor for energy and climate change on the obama white house now freeman is at harvard law school and says she sees a trend in the people selected so far i think the clear messages vitality one good people in place wrestling start who have experienced any days and not wasting any time. Freeman is a good example of those who could be excluded. If a biden administration rejects people connected to fossil fuel companies. She sits on the board of oil company conaco phillips but she also led obama's effort to double car fuel efficiency standards. She's also an expert on using presidential powers to address climate change. That's knowledge that likely will be necessary if both parties can't agree on new climate legislation when biden his sworn in next year. Jeff brady npr news.

"The mayor Mondays with mayor Jeff long well right here was Steven to good morning Mister Maher morning dad how did everything go on father's day Jim good weekend I had a great weekend so Saturday I turn sixty and and then we had a father's day celebration yesterday so the entire family came over we had about twenty five people beating the lunch at our house yesterday and so it was a fun time what do you do do you cater that from Chester's house at work my wife because of father's day my birthday my wife char grilled chicken now that is fantastic Nancy she might even being I hate to admit this on there but she may be better at cooking chicken on the grill and I am home while when I take a lot of pride in that but she she did a fantastic job everybody left satisfied well good that's that's the way to have a good weekend celebrate a birthday and father's day and get now you got to get back at it here on the work week got a city council meeting tomorrow and there are there are sure some interesting topics on that list including design build for the baseball stadium how's that going so it's going really well we have our next the maximum price GMP coming up and we're still under budget right now for the baseball stadium in where the over seventy percent of the design build is as guaranteed now for guaranteed maximum price and and so that's looking good so the GMP on on tomorrow's agenda should go really well in the baseball stadium still on schedule even with all of these rain events we've been having maybe the worst spring we've had in most of our memories and still on schedule to open up next March and looking forward to that we are going to tackle that issue with the scooters or we have made some adjustments were the new ordinance that we're going to look at passing the moral only pertains to the rental scooters it does not pertain to personal computers but now that we understand people are writing those personal scooters in different places we are going to have to come back and address some safety issues with them separately and but tomorrow's ordinance only pertains to the rental scooter groups and does not pertain to personal scooters so nothing changes for personal scooters but I think there still could be some safety issues of people arriving those on the street at night without any lights or reflectors or any of that and that something needs to be addressed and I know you're looking at the what to do with clap golf course in southeast which you taunting that's on the agenda tomorrow so it is and that's been certain that councilmember Clinton and then and a whole group of neighbors in that area been working on for quite some time we know they clapped continues to decline and rounds of golf played and golf in general as a sport that maybe the next generation of this finding that takes too much of their time or whatever reason they're not as interested in and then join golf and you know there's a lot of different activities and so were looking at what's the best use of that property for that neighborhood and and so the group has come up with a areas of ideas that they'd like to see employment and I think part of the issue is once the neighborhood found out that they can actually utilize that park in the green space and build some kind of special they kinda jumped onboard pretty quickly as my understanding now I'm I'm a golfer I would love to see a golf element there still but it ears that their and the community is moving in a different direction than my preference in looking at building a lot of different park amenities there I'm a golfer to miniature golf for yeah well that's that's golf that's still fine we've got a couple of manager golf courses around town and are still a lot of fun I just I still love and enjoy getting out when I can and play a round of golf I just find it relaxing for me now if it's it's a great activity to do and it's great to have that resource or if you need it Hey now you're the one that brought up your age I didn't but the do you feel any different now you're in your sixties well I can tell you this it seems like my joints in my body tells me I'm sixty you know I just can it creeps up on you know you know I still feel like Yang that sixty just sounds like a big number I remember when I was certainly a much younger person and I would think of sixty is being old now I think of sixty is being young yeah you're fine your rest in already looks good after that after this weekend you know it's it's all good I still play us a morning basketball to why with a bunch of young guys and maybe that's what keeps me still a little younger maybe part of my problem with my joints to I'll last that could all tie in together well I got a busy I've got a busy day tomorrow at the the city council meeting so we'll let you get back to it but I'm glad you had a good weekend we thank you for joining us today thanks Ted take every week always good to hear from "For Monday's with the mayor with Wichita mayor Jeff long, real good morning, sir. Good morning. I did an interview over the weekend with sydeklik home. One of your city council members talking about we were talking about the convention center. Now, we're this is the new the next item on the agenda. I guess, but a convention center, a new how much money do you think or do, you know, have we been missing out on? So maybe on some conventions regional conventions or whatever that we haven't been getting because our facilities is not up to snuff. Well, if you if you go back and look at that report that I believe. Hey, new article references. Thank thank they use to figure about forty million dollars a year or something around that number. But it's it's significantly. We know we have a subpar convention center. And and we can do a good job of selling Wichita on state come here and looked mentioned center, we often lose them. And it's just not great space for convention. We know that it's going to have to be fixed were trying to figure out how we do that. Kinda stay within the budget because I still feel strongly in same way. We were able to find finances for the baseball stadium that we shouldn't be taxing. You know, raising taxes on the general public that we shouldn't be raising mill levies that we shouldn't be trying to get into the pockets of the average citizen more. And you know, we're so that's that's challenging and and you know, we wanted to try and keep a. Tax climate that's appealing to the masses. And so to do that. It takes them takes a lot of work. Same time. You're looking at performing arts probably either new or renovated facility there. So this this whole thing could cost a lot of money. Yeah. So, unfortunately, there were a lot of things neglected three years in that city, and and we're also having to build a five hundred million dollar water treatment healthy and right after that we're going to have to build a new. Bio nutrient removal facility nice way to say sewer plant. But yeah, so we have we have a lot of meat, and we're trying to get caught up on all of those. And. Same time. You know? There's there's a number of other things we're gonna hear tomorrow's consent. Let's talk about how we incorporate more art and to public projects. Good update on our utilities optimization program, which we're trying to utilize techniques that can help us be more efficient as we as we run our utilities program. We're going to hear from folks, I want us to trapping neutering release the of. Feral cat. We get into a little bit of everything. Yeah. That's a workshop going tomorrow. I guess. You touched on something there that I found kind of interesting doing a little research on it about the arts. And and how what what does that exactly that the art say at a certain percentage of every dollar spent should be spent on the arches at it. Yeah. And and they make a great argument that that that, you know, can translate into investments that pay off and makes for a better built city and. We we agree with your going to track. People a lot of people today. Want more than just bland base? Either building go up, but there's number ways you can incorporate those opportunities into the design if it's done upfront starting day one. And it's. Art, doesn't doesn't need to be sitting always be just a statue. After the fact out in front of a public building or public structure art can be incorporated in a way that the structures designed and to the elements of the of the construction and the design that have a big marathon this weekend yesterday gone through right down the middle of Wichita several hundred people involved that was quite a deal. Yeah. And so, you know, those are always a little challenging on on people's commutes. They're pretty popular when you have a lot of runs that go through what your Thanh and people enjoy them. And I I think that's great. Nice to see that we have a large population that enjoys the. The impacts of running as you do. Hey big birthday today by wife, say Chili's having a birthday today. What do you think about that? That should be at least if not a national holiday. It should be a city holiday. Happy birthday, Saint Shelly. We'll see what we can do to make that up by local holiday. That would be really good. Now, she wants that sewer plant built out did she really wants a sewer plant. I don't think we should name this airplane. Go. I didn't say. But anyway, hey, listen, thanks for being with us. We appreciate it. Mr Mayor have a good day to day care, seven forty one. Now. Stephen Ted coming up editor Bill, ROY the Wichita business journal..

"People say what about jeff long s smart dude and so if if he believed that the school was going to benefit financially recruiting wise whatever you know i know jeff well enough to know that that he won't do anything without a long study and due diligence so it's it's a tough spot though man i feel you when when it's when it's being practical versus tug heartstrings right right exactly and you know jeb long basically he cut his own throat when he decided that he was going to try to get all the games in fayette bill because some of the big power brokers i guess you'd say in arkansas stephen operated at a little off and i think they made it clear that they did not want games to be completely moved to fayette bill and and you know obviously the brad leave him thing getting really helped long either i mean bela most record you know spoke for itself and so i think he in long both will probably you know headed on the way out regardless of little rock band bills stadium debate but i do think the new regime coach moore's has done an excellent job at reaching out to the entire state and not trying to mega just north west arkansas thing but trying to realize that hey this is arkansas team whether you're in west memphis whether you're right or whether you're in texas cana their rice back fan scattered all across the state and it can't just be a regional thing like for the razorbacks realistic seed it's gonna be a statewide thing so i mean the coach off and i'm up against the break but i hear you and it's a tough spot and think you by the way for mentioning cooter own show.

"Jeff long has been very supportive of brett beal emma i feel like brett bebo has a lot of equity with the decisionmakers in arkansas so even if it's really bad i can see them giving him another year now how bad is really bad i if you lose every game by thirty maybe not maybe there's nothing you can do is every look what he's doing now i know that's the that's the fight of trying to figure out do they look a little more competitive you know kelly's come in a quarterback and i am always here for offense line size quarterbacks those are those are my kind of quarterbacks but they have to be better than than what they've been but it is so strange because he seems so safe even if they had a bad season but if it's a spectacularly bad season maybe they do something but i i would imagine jeff long will fight the influencers there as long as he can to keep him and give him another chance thank you very much indeed staples will see this weekend in jacksonville when the soap opera continues always great to catch up baseball while that is a very disturbing story and i think he he put it pretty succinctly what does the future holds for jim makayi who started the season on a relatively safe seat not anymore we'll take a break your phone calls eight five five two four two seventoeight five hey welcome back to the program a very interesting conversation their was andy staples your phone calls continued eight five five two four two seven two eight five glad you're with us in jerry is up next to howery jerry.
