"I'm here with my friend. Jeff hartmann from behind the steel curtain to give you guys. A little preview of the raiders. Steelers game on sunday now as a reminder. We're still doing our behind enemy lines or five questions with the opponent articles. So there's anything jeff and i don't cover on here. We'll cover on the written side of things later week anyways. Jeff thank you for coming on man. How are you doing. I'm doing great. Is there a more traditional or classic. Matchup than raiders steelers. I mean it doesn't get much better than that when he talked about traditional matchups. I know we're going back to what like the the beginning of the nfl days right. Pretty much from the get go. The raiders steelers have been rivals whatnot that numerous times boy us. Oh absolutely the originally see and others playoff matchups and accusations of icing the field in the immaculate reception then even bleeds into modern day where the raiders have have the steelers number in oakland at the time. Terrell pryor beating the steelers. I mean just these weird games. The the rivalry still exists in my opinion. Oh yeah for sure. I mean it is a i hate using the cliche because it is such a cliche now the old throughout the record books when these two teams play each other. Right like doesn't really matter. I remember the last one of the. I guess it wasn't in the last year i went to but In two thousand was it nineteen or eighteen when they play the raiders. Were terrible playing. The steelers would go on to be a playoff team of big. Ben got hurt in the whole broken x ray machine in the you know like i said the raiders were foreign twelve team in one of those wins against the steelers so always a fun match up. Yeah and even in pittsburgh the bruce gronkowski game where i believe. He led the raiders to victory heinz field. That's where they're playing this week in week. two. I'm excited to talk about it. Let's get to it l. Let's get started kind of looking at the big picture now. We had the philosophies of preseason regular season game were steelers even one. How are you feeling about in this year. You kinda still expecting the steelers to to win the afc north and be a super bowl contender. I did predict the steelers to be a double digit win team. I'm not sure if that's going to be good enough to win. The afc north. I am someone that thanks to the. Afc north is one of if not the best divisions in all football those will compare say the nfc west is is comparable but For me the steelers are still a mystery in a lot of ways especially on offense the watch the game against buffalo. In week one yes. It's it's on the road. It's a tough place to play buffalo's a very good team But boy the offense was non existent for tuten for the first half. The steelers needs some consistency than e consistency. Running the ball. They couldn't do that in buffalo for a lot of reasons. Rothlisberger was rusty to start. I don't know how much that we chalk up the week. One just being week one and people still getting league knocking the rust off on and how much we say is is there cause for concern. So there's a lot of questions still with the steelers. Fan base is super pumped. They won that we going game. I have some. I definitely have my reservations heading into week two. I think the raiders are going to be a lot tougher than people think and We'll see what the steelers are made of. Yeah i mean you hit the nail. Right on the raiders. Being a tough route than people realize. I don't know a whole lot of people i know. It wasn't like a clean slate of picking the ravens last night or a monday night. But mean let's be the raiders came into that game as underdogs and i think they impress a lotta people but i do have to ask you before we move on to getting into more specific the steelers. Are you worried about the browns and the ravens at all or i guess more specifically are you worried about the browns. Because obviously they're kind of up and coming team yet. The browns i mean i. I did get to watch the browns chiefs game in week. One Definitely a much improved roster. They're doing it the right way. Finally and it only took them two decades. But they're finally doing it the right way. They're making good decisions. It seems like they have a good coach. In stefanski in the ravens are still in. They're always going to be a concern. They're just radish with injuries. I mean it's insane. I think they lost another offense lineman on monday night football to a knee injury. He was placed on injured reserve today. I mean they're kicking the tires on lady on bell and a couple other running backs. It's insane injuries. They've sustained but they still have a really talented roster and you saw that on monday night football. They didn't win the game but they have a ton of potential. There is no easy win. Even when you throw in cincinnati in my opinion with job row and that young roster they have a lot of exciting players there The afc north is going to be very difficult. Like i said. I'm not predicting the steelers to win the division i think they're going to be competitive but It's tough to win. That division will put it that way. Yeah i mean no doubt no doubt so. I want to start off talking about ben rothlisberger. There is no doubt he wasn't the same player last year especially down the stretch of the season. I think you talked about it a little bit at the topic of what we're talking about on the show. I'm curious do you think is age in. The injuries are starting to catch up with them. Or are you confident he'll be able to bounce back either way kind of what makes you think that why it's interesting. It depends on. He talked to last season. Obviously he's coming off that reconstructive elbow surgery which he had in two thousand nineteen. No one knew what his arm strength is going to be. I don't think that was injury that that really ham. Hamstrung him so to speak it was i think he had knee injuries. I think he had some injuries to lower body that were causing him to have to really throw with all arms and that's anyone knows the mechanics throwing any object. That's a big ask of someone that's been doing it for as long as ben. Rothlisberger has I think that he is healthy. Coming into this season can he stay healthy behind that offensive line. That's a big question. Mark does he have the skills to still win games. Absolutely i think he still has the escape ability in the pocket. He's never been a guy. That's going to run. Like josh allen does or patrick mahomes does or even a derek carr does. He's a guy that is going to want to be in the pocket..

"Pittsburgh steelers fans welcome back to the second part of the steelers. Post game podcast. I'm jeff hartmann senior editor behind the steel curtain. Dot com joining me as always scofield editor. Bt se and. brian. Anthony davis or podcast producer. We are continuing to go through our of ratings. Were grading giving out grades. Zoe's always in the post game. Before we do this. I wanna talk about the inactive list. Roberson go ahead and explain. It does what happened the list. I think this matters now. Okay well and not only that. I had several players that i thought i picked all the correct positions for the inactive list. I just wasn't sure which players it would be those positions and i actually had an article ready to go. I had names in there. So i could delete other names like i'm gonna pick up the most notable name and put it is the headline so i get the inactive list. I put the headline on their buddy johnson and active for this leads inactive for steelers week. One only to find out nine minutes later when the steelers publish it. It's not buddy johnson. It's robert splaine now. They always give it to labrador report and he reports it apparently from the time they told him. Hey this is what it's going to be sent out at eleven thirty to the time. They actually had to turn it in is when they had to make the call with roberts poulain having a shin injury in pre-game warmups so therefore spelane ended up out and buddy johnson ended up in. So that's why it was a roberts blaine some people it's like. Oh this is going to. What's being to the depth chart now. It was an injury thing so they went with it. Don't know where that would put split on special teams. I thought of it right off the bat Kickoff return if that would have been different but who knows but that's how that went down all right. It's good to note because we're going to talk about the defense. Let's start off looking at josh allens numbers. We're going to base our grades off of that. Josh islanders thirtieth fifty one thirst for two hundred and seventy yards of five point. Three average one touchdown. No interceptions was sacked three times. He's a tough guy to bring down. That's really important. Seventy nine point seven rating. Let's talk about the steelers pass rush. I the steelers finished the game with eight quarterback hits okay. That's that's incredible and then three sacks tj wad with two cameron heyward with a third. The was almost a half a sack. Two and a half. I wasn't sure if they're going to give tj half on that one. But hayward was definitely there. I but tj helped from not getting away. Sorry if josh allen is. Let's say tom brady type. Quarterback is going to sit in the pocket or what had eight tax they have lit up the scoreboard data. Stacks Like the rolling rate the pass rush. Grade the pass rush. I should say bryan. we'll start with. You will go in the same order. I thought the pass rush was absolutely phenomenal. I have one guy that i want to. Mention is melvin ingram. The third i think he changes what they can do on that team by having a third starter in there so you mix and match and pull those guys in and out move them around. He's playing on both sides In relief he's playing early and often. He's getting to the quarterback. I thought they were great. I did not expect. I was afraid that that sack record was going to fall this week and it looked for a while that all right it very well could but then they got it going in also not just the sax how many more would had if the bills weren't holding everybody highsmith would have had a sack there. There was ingram. Would've had a sack. There were so many sack opportunities. Okay so did you. What was a great again. A all right. Dave grade to pass rush yeah. That sounds good. A sounds great. I mean how great is it to where. Tj watt comes off the field and you're not overly concerned about it because you've got two other players that are that are also getting the job done. I'm not saying they're both. Tj watt. but what i'm saying is it's not. it's not oh my goodness what a fall off that all three of them fantastic job constantly bringing the pressure they were they were held. I put a picture on twitter. The touchdown that bill scored the offense of teaching what made around the office of live at. He reached back and grabbed. His shoulder was the only reason. Josh allen was not sacked on that and threw that touchdown pass and how that doesn't get called. I don't know that one was to me. The most egregious out of any of the missed calls. But that's just what they were what they were doing But i mean my dad asked me is is the bills line that bad or steelers pass rush that good to me. The steelers patrushev at good i agree. They were the elite. They was an elite performance. By the pass rush. Let me ask you this because you are. Brian socially bryant is david you. You've mind for this dumb. Michael back was asking on twitter. Is this the best dealers trio of pass rushers that we've ever seen at least in the modern era. Think about the pass rushers so we have ingram highsmith. What is there been any trio. That's better either of brian. Dave whoever wants to dl. Go you know what i'm going to say. No this isn't the best. 'cause that blitzburgh team had a lot of great pass rushers you had. You could throw gilded and chad brown in the mix along with the fact that you had green and lloyd just just edge persistent so ask edges that so much that you put them all you want to get them all three on the field at the same time the no. I don't think there's another if you're just talking straight and rushers. Yes edge the no. I can't recall anybody. Yes it was the third harrison woodley. Was there a third there for them. Was it a hagen was was it world's world's was there in two thousand ten You had hagen's in there for a little bit because like but even even then that's not even comparable. Yeah i know this is really that good and being that good and the other two being that good you know. This is just one game yeah. Tj watts on pace for thirty four sacks here. and i'm you know what with them half they would've would've yeah. It'd be forty two tom. You're against us three dollars. One for each total sack. Nine months you have done this since since the really awful taste in the mouth. The playoff loss. So yeah i gotta tell you. That's that's absolutely crazy. But you and. I look forward to this forum and getting the hear from you. Because i'm the hype. Man you know that i just spout off a lot of stuff. It's feeling it's it's fun it's weird stats like what pittsburgh steeler quarterback duel had razor commercials back in the seventies. And if you don't know that might crew second terry bradshaw. I know that dumb stuff but you know things like cover two schemes. And that's why we talk to you because when it comes to the pittsburgh steelers you guys know this team like you know your high school team. So how's everything going my friend. It's going great. We're back in the swing and you know watching college football over the weekend. Getting excited doing some. you know. We're two games into our high school season already. So i mean i feel like man is football season so all we need steelers complete it. So i understand that You've got the nasty words. Scoreless this year So far so good. Man our defenses Pitch the couple shutouts in the first two games. So we're playing a little like seventy six steelers founded a you know i. I thought that that was He didn't they start the season with three that year and they wound up. It's five something like that. I mean they were. That was an incredible defense at seven. Yeah they they were awesome. They they actually started off. Started off with a rough year and Just ended it fantastic. So i would have to look that up but is it like a no hitter though. Is it like when you just don't talk about the The shutouts ono. We talked about all the time. I guess that's just a matter of pride you know. We were actually angry because in the opener nobody crossed midfield on us in the in the second game they they made it to like our forty so we talked about a new. Let's see let's not not just let's get no point. Let's keep them out of the red zone so we'll see you know you go one week at a time like everything else. Well i tell you what the your post your postgame speeches. I would love to hear him. But i would really love to hear game speech. So what i'm going to do here is try to figure out. What pre game speech for you would be for the pittsburgh steelers this week. So that's one of the things. I'm gonna ask you in a little bit. What they need to do. And how you would motivate this team but lots of interesting things going on. And of course i mean. Nothing's bigger than the news that we got on thursday with t. J. watt allegedly walking into the. Rooney's office and saying you've gotta deal my agents. Take it up with them. But you've gotta deal. I'm throwing them under the bus. I'm going back to practice. What were your thoughts when you heard that. Because there's been some people saying that might not be completely true could be a little bit fabricated but if it's true. I'm lovin kevin. Yeah if it's true. That sort of raises his status in the pantheon of great steelers because it just sort of gives that everyman quality even those get eighty million guaranteed dollars man with eighty million. Guaranteed going into your pockets. But the idea that it's time to get back to work with. My boys is very appealing to the fan base. Of course but i think the thing that i loved about it and i don't know if it's true either but is the whole notion of overruling the agents because to me. The agents are just a problem. I know that they have a functioning a job to do. And i understand that. They're there for their client and i also understand that if you're an nfl player your your shelf. Life is short and you need to maximize your profitability as much as possible. I don't. I don't begrudge these guys for trying to get every dollar that they can but oftentimes really feels like things could be just cleaner and healthier if the agents were removed. Maybe i'm maybe. I'm speaking because i i bought. I bought a house recently and And the middlemen in that process were so frustrating that i'm jaded by that but to hear him to hear the story that he overruled his agents. Walk into the office and said let's get this done. So i could get back to work is just very appealing and you know what i believe in santa claus. The easter bunny the tooth fairy. I'm believing in this story. I told jeff. Hartmann and dave scofield on the the steelers preview that i don't even think about that. I'm going to believe this gospel. And that's what i'm going with. I'm i'm putting my fan hat on on this one. So i'm really excited but i gotta tell you there's this is welcome news because when you saw the injury report on thursday it included for the second day in a row when alex highsmith so what does t. J. watt coming back to this team in the with the sense though that he has not practiced he has been in conditioning. He has been present the entire time. But how much difference does that make kevin. I will be surprised. If he's visibly out of shape that he is a extremely conscientious of his work habits of i think he's the kind of guy that like. He would never allow himself to enter an nfl game knowing that he was out of shape because he takes care of his body he we just look at it craft work. I see is technique when you look at him as a pass rusher. That's a guy that his drill bet stuff over and over and over and over again he can do it in his sleep. He's a master craftsman and it would shock me if he hasn't been diligent with that work on the side. Now again i understand that. It's not the same as live reps. But i don't know if a guy In his situation needs quite as many live rupp especially since scheme hasn't changed. There's really been no appeal on the defensive side of the football so learning curve. You know that's not going to really be an issue. So i i don't know if it's gonna be mid season form but i don't think it's going to be one of those things where were in the late in the third quarter and we're looking at tj. We're like oh no know. The lay offs is really hurting. Right now ingram. I wonder about a little bit more. You know. I wonder what kind of how many reps can he take Is he gonna be able to. If highsmith can't go as ingram or younger going to be able to play a sixty minutes. That's very interesting and glad you brought that up. It's very nice knowing that ingram is in there as well and look you also might see some action out from the isaac redman award winner. Jamir jones as well. Let me ask you about him. Real quick as we're getting ready to go into this. Is this guy we we've seen this movie in the past we've seen the twos are skippers. Just show off in in the second. Half of preseason games but jerry jones jamir jones. I wanna talk about first bills players bills players that you're thinking my god this guy scares the crud outta me for a lot of reasons. I i think. I know who we're going to mention right off the bat i too will go with dave. Go first because dave's always complaining about brian. ceiling is answers to so go with earth. Later that you're looking at this is just you. You're thinking this guy scares me entering this game on sunday. Who is believe it or not. I'm i'm going with quarterback. I'm going with josh allen. I think he you know a lot of people were have him as possible. Mvp candidate i know if if you do your their season long fantasy football i know most places had him ranked the number two quarterback behind. Patrick mahomes a lot of thing. A lot of big things expected out of him this year. So with that. And it's and it's funny because i saw some people throwing around some numbers in the live chat of all the steelers need to do this. They gotta make sure this doesn't happen. A lot of that was exactly the stuff that i talked about on the steelers dacic podcast which is on our audio platform. So if you haven't checked it makes you go do that. Because that's exactly what we talked about. But i even tried to break it down with josh allen. Oh well once you russia's for a lot to have much success there was no correlation. You never know if this guy's gonna throw for yards run for twenty yards or both. He's he's he reminds you a m- not saying they're the same but the but the idea of that he can almost do any anything and make things happen. Kinda fell like one. Btr early in his career that he was just kind of you know when ben would shake off those defenders and still complete the past and stuff like that. You never know with this guy. If he's going to if he's going to take off you know but as butler said today. Hey i hope he wants to run a lot because we like to hit guys who run the paraphrase what he said so. But you can't look at this team and not look at the quarterback in and say that. Yeah that's what we really have to make sure that we account for good big good pig. Indeed brian with. Man i tell you what josh allen is absolutely i i think he is that next quarterback in fact i had a fantasy draft where i just picked him yesterday instead of mahomes because i think this guy is going to be lighting up numbers. But that's for another thing the guy that he's throwing his stefan digs and the steelers have this tendency to play better against guys six three six four six five tall receivers the kind of match up better with them and but these guys that are six foot and fast. They struggle a little bit more with remember all those years as a guy like john brown. Who would who would light him up. John brown's done on this team anymore. I'm not talking about him. But i'm talking about stefan digs. I love everything that this guy does. He's just dangerous. They shut them down in the first half last year. You'd just new watching that game on december fifteenth last year. That was not going to be enough. The second half he just let them up and he has that ability to turn it on so. This is a guy that i would probably yet. You've gotta stop him. Everyone knows you've gonna stop josh allen but if you stop stefan digs it's going to be easier to stop josh l. Yeah there's two are obviously the main to the people will bring up when it comes to this year. I'm going to go on the defense side of the ball and it's the other edmonds brother. What is this one's. Tremaine is a player. That i think is getting better and better. And he was a first round. Pick for reading. I think he's a really good inside linebacker. He's someone that can wreck your plans at trying to get into the tight and things like that I'll go in that direction. Because i new digs in allen. We're going to be the first to that. Ofensive line defensive line any good can get after the quarterback they go. Yeah you've got an oliver who was a top ten Jerry hughes is tough morio. Addison i believe he still in there. islam I can never pronounce his name. Be there i mean. He's out this practice the last two days. Well they didn't practice today. It was the projected injured report. But yet he didn't practice on wednesday their bills fans are a little bit. Like yeah kind isn't good. If he's not going to be available now how you say his name again. Let can't remember the to a or something like that. First name star dr. Yes thinking of names. If you see it. I put it up there. I was wrong. It is fazon tremaine. See dance referring to any tremaine was his name. Adding people lab chevrolet pool jet stream now with their first name. His first name is fazon really. I have one more. Which i think is the biggest concern. Sean mcdermott. i think he is a top notch. Nfl coach he had just swelling games. He he's he's someone that you you. It's hard to one up him if you know what. I mean as a coach. It's very difficult out coach. This buffalo bills t- so you just have to have to beat them. I feel like they're one of the best teams in the nfl at least last year. We'll see if that carries the twenty twenty one all right. Did this all last season. I wanna carry this over into the twenty twenty one regular season our x-factor thinking of something someone that whatever. The case may be decide the outcome of the game based on their play or really we can expand this beyond players coaches. it could be venue. Could be anything so guys week. One buffalo bills in buffalo will start with brian. What's your x factor in this game. Gimme cam sutton in this game. It's it's gonna fall on him in this game. I i could see him making a big play. Or i mean i'd hate to see go the other way but that could camps and like that i've lot dave. What about you any factor. Let's go minka back there. You know doing his thing in the defense seeing if he can disrupt stuff allow the steelers to do things in the regular season that they didn't really do in the preseason because they couldn't because he wasn't playing if you know what i mean so let's see if if if if minka can come in there and force that take away. "Deputy editor behind the curtain dot com and we were doing a little bit of a primer for cut down day of course tuesday the days now as soon as this podcast drops we will be taken down the minutes. Heck the seconds to that cut deadline as those move start trickling in and we know they will and they will be coming in hot. And i don't really anticipate any big crazy cuts by the pittsburgh steelers especially the team in the direction. They're trending in. It just doesn't look like a team. That's going to be making any kind of bold decision right now but we should talk about the defense of course first half of the show. We broke down often. The side of the football defensively kicking things off at the corner position and we'll work our way in from there at corner. I think we already know what the steelers star is going to look like but then it comes to those depth spots and whether or not they make a move for another corner. Which if you ask me if you ask jeffrey benedict if you ask. Jeff hartmann dave pskov. Basically if you ask anyone from behind the steel curtain dot com staff it feels like an evid ability that the steelers land some sort of corner whether or not. It's a player from an outside team or trade to upgrade the spot especially at that nickel position. An o'brien callaghan's name. That's been talked about a lot and one that the steelers have called to check in on. I don't know if it's passed anything other than initial contact but that's something. We need to see one of those spots. Honesty is going to come from a player more than likely outside the organization that the time of recording. The show is currently a pittsburgh steeler outside of that you of go look at those kind of depths spots. Could amar gilbert climb his win in the team. Of course you know occur. Brown got cut in the steelers have no plans on signing him to the practice squad which is kind of mind boggling to think of the undrafted free agent with the largest signing bonus in steelers history getting cut just a few weeks later with no interest for the team for even a one redshirt kind of developmental year the steelers sitting and kind of moved along that one was a bit of a shocker but that corner spot again. It's one wash. It almost seems like justin lanes going to fluke his way into another nfl year. Sorry if you're listening. Justin but he struggled mightily throughout all his playing time in the regular season. The last couple of years after being third round pick for the pittsburgh steelers But they just don't have the bodies. Justin leans going to find his way on this team once again. Moving out to safety. This one is kind of one of those up in the air things once again. Because the steelers don't really have any safeties past their starters you know making fitzpatrick trill admins and traynor. Would i suppose it's kind of that number. One free safety back up now with almost no competition behind him which is pretty insane for the pittsburgh steelers to roll a seventh round pick as a primary backup into the season. But that's just the way we're rolling into this year so hopefully norwood is ready to go but right now. I don't anticipate anything anything crazy. Come down from that role. Strong safety however i guess miles kellogg abreu is your backup strong safety guy. That played linebacker. The last couple of seasons. In that kind of marcus allen type role of course. He's reunited with coach. Darrell austin who drafted him to detroit and meet him. A strong safety before awesome left and killebrew was bumped down to that inside linebacker position. So safety i wouldn't expect anything crazy outside of them perhaps trying to bring in another body. I don't. I don't foresee them making any bold moves at the safety position though and are just more likely to try to rotate one of the corners. Up to safety in the event of an injury bringing things down to inside linebacker and things start to get a little bit of spicy because that inside outside linebacker spot. We know the steelers like to carry nine of them total. Whether or not it's five guys in the inside or five guys in the outside varies by year and it just varies by talent level. And who. Danny danny smith thinks is going to be a better contributor on special teams those kind of depth linebacker roles typically false guys that have a little bit more special teams prowess. So that's something to keep in mind when the cuts come down and you get mad that your favorites outside or inside linebacker depth player that is got the axe. That's probably because they're not a very good special teams contributor. And that's their number. One job being the ninth linebacker on this team so some names to watch out for us cut candidates i think of course ulysses gilbert the third his time i feel like he's one of those guys just come to an end he was terrible. All preseason lawn. He lost naps he. He's he remembered that week one game that he was healthy. Mike tomlin refuse to give them a helmet despite having almost no depth that inside linebacker at all it was just one of those things where ulysses gilbert the third continues to hang on but everything is just training in the wrong direction for him lashing on this team any longer. So that's someone. I kind of anticipate getting the chop. Of course marcus. Allen is another name that you should watch out for who i think he might have played himself onto the roster but battling some injury. You don't know for certain. We know joe schubert and devin bush. You're going to be the starter so not to worry. They're the most likely backups. Roberts splaine and buddy johnson will be backing them up then it becomes whether or not there's a fifth linebacker or fifth guy on the outside. Of course the outside linebacker spot you've got. Tj watt melvyn. Melvin ingram goodness gracious. Already forgotten his name. And then you have. Alex highsmith as your three starters. Your forced guy comes down to a competition of three players..

I think that if the steelers trust both of these players enough. I don't think one quarter is going to have a given to them. It's gonna be who earns it in the preseason and training camps with year. really interesting battle to watch. I have to think that don't to be honest with you. I think the base and rudolf like i said would be the leader in the clubhouse and that competition but happens would be far behind. What do you make a benny. Snell's roll coming up obviously nausea harris's drafted to be running back one but how many snell be using the offense this season Not much if you asked me. He's an injured. All of training camp Last season was very. He had kinda hit or miss. You know you have some good games Early on in the season and the steelers kind of abandoned the wrong altogether but he hasn't been available this other training camp. You know they always say your best abilities your availability and he hasn't had that and so when you think about nausea harris and the way that mike tomlin and his offense is like us the running back he wanted to get all the carries until he literally need a break and so far in training camp. It's been anthony mcfarland second-year back to maryland. It's been getting the carry And then you had thrown kaelin balaj. Who's kind of a journeyman. Now is breaking several. Nfl team. he has been playing well. He's been getting rave reviews. Mike tomlin. i'm not sure. How many running backs. They're willing to keep it right now. Then he smells the odd man out into people wanna talk about you know projected yard i. I wouldn't expect much from benny's now if he makes it interesting. Jeff hartmann upon the cart and joining us here on pushing the odds so when you look at the defense obviously tj. Watts had just an incredible star to his nfl career. But who else has flashed here in training. Camp defensively pittsburgh. Well i mean. I think if you're looking at outside linebacker dalek. Highsmith your Last season he came in and looked good spelling depre- end or what he can rush from both sides and now this year everyone expected that big sophomore jump. And that's exactly what he has provided us for now granted. It's a small sample size and it's a preseason but in my opinion you can glean something from the preseason regards to you are dominant. Even if you're going up against the backup you're gonna make them look silly and that's exactly what he's done i think he's going to be an impact player. Everyone thinks you know was out free. How's that going to impact tj wide. I think. Alex is an melvin ingram. Let's not forget about him. He's healthy and looks really good. they're going to be able to counteract you know in in kind of place but the as a combination. I think the pass rush russia's still going to be unbelievable you you figure to it'll be back hayward Lulu upfront you..

I really missed hashtag bad company. I really missed. Bts's family of podcast in everybody in the live chat. That hangs out on all the shows. And i even mistake. Scofield and jeff hartmann. I missed those guys so as well as everybody else on the network. It's great to be back here. gosh talking about we're talking about bigfoot. We're talking about lao richie songs. But we're talking about the most personality in pittsburgh steelers lower than that's what we are going to be doing Looks like we've had some people down for the count not feeling that great this week in hashtag bad company. Hope you're feeling better. And if i missed anything in the live chat. I do apologize. You know me multitask. This is bad. We'll tell you. I do not multi task well. So i'm trying so if you need to. If you need to let me know. Put it on there again. George test mask are the scouts. Coed now yes a new yes. They are but they're separate troops completely. My daughter was there. It's cow camp as well but she was in her own troop. She's not in our troop now. They're co ed classes. They're they're coed. They they mixed through but we keep a very good eye on them and they are not at the same campsite their tents or not anywhere near each other. And that's something that we make sure for for many reasons but the girls troops. I will tell you this. They are organized. They are fantastic. They take it to the boys. They really do fantastic groups really glad to have them there. They get a great experience as well. It's a good feeling to have all kinds of scouts. No matter the gender. They're working together but at night there in separate sites and that's good too so anyway i i gotta tell you this. I talked a lot of steelers. I met some. I met some be. Tse fans there that that knew about bt se. Had no clue that i was on. It had no clue. They didn't realize that they go to the website. And like mogo to the podcasts. So it was so much fun. It was one of the best weeks of my life again but this year no issues. What's so ever migra up. They they were really pumped. They had a lot of fun and no one thought. It was really weird. I think being off for covert being missing it last year. They missed being a camp in so they were back in. They were on their best behavior. I i think it was great. I love this now. I'm going to say jerry cherry says come on feel the noise girls. Rock the boys. Now if you're going to stay quiet riot you can but jerry jerry would probably correct me. 'cause that's originally a song by slade believe nineteen seventy-three one of the greatest rock bands in england's history. If you don't know slate you know the song. Run run away from nineteen eighty-four. It is a great song but slade does really good rock band. But we probably would've know it if it wasn't for quiet riot. So can all feel the. And i'm kind of like doom and gloom and so but joe that that may have been the problem to last year is joe began to autoimmune. I start feeling good about our chances and then came in at ten is oh what. Why wouldn't i be optimistic at that point. Even ten dollars like ugly wins. I don't know so yeah. i'm. I'm perpetually anxious that the bottom's gonna fall out from under us. I guess that's kind of where i come from. Unfortunately we need you to break down. Joe will yes joe. He's the he's the optimus he's he's the guy who's going to see the silver lining no matter how bad things look no matter how rough things are. Even when the steelers get embarrassed in the playoffs so still find the positives to take away from it so he he's always gotta pulling us off the edge of the abyss and so he's the yeah. I think if if it wasn't for him coming on whether the season fell apart last year. Have been chris. And i just yelling and screaming. And so yeah. He's bounced still screaming to be fair. A justified though the super chat up really quick. If i can click on a properly dirk sessions puts five dollars in the tip jars frost. Joe second chair podcast. Or is that a reference to something. He's a born journalist so he comes in always very well researched and very well Thought through the things that he's bringing to our podcast. He's he's the person that we rely on to To really set us up as what the structure of what we're gonna talk about is for in a lot of ways pollen. I just come on and talk. And chris sets it all up So it's always really helpful to have his organization in his research. That goes into what. What's gonna make good podcast for us this week. part of the sandwich where it's got the the negative part wolf say about kurt's which is kind of enjoyable for us if we could take a kind of pleasure in trying to guess where chris is going to go sometimes The hill get things just stuck in the back of his mind and they'll just really bother him and from week to week will still argue about how there shouldn't be to professional athletes that have the same name and that's just wrong and it gets really frustrated by its becomes a game of. How do we continue to respond to the things. That really bother. Chris and for all of paul's what he's saying is his negativity. It all comes from a very strong understanding of what what should be happening in these. It's a frustration when something that should be. Obviously happening isn't so his heart. Is you know deeply rooted in a in steelers fandom and he gets disappointed when it doesn't go as well as he knows that it can and i'm just here to to pull him back from the abyss but remember they can do they can. Yes that's true so you know we balance each other out pretty well all the way around trying to keep some good humor but also You know trying to bring some some good analysis to what has just happened. "Team even if he's just a special teams in depth piece. Think about a better jordan. Dangerfield antoine brooks a. He was another player who got a lot of talk. He didn't get in front of the media he might tomlin spoke about him. Mandatory minicamp saying he could have a bigger role this season. He was a drafted player. In twenty twenty in traynor. Would i still think the steelers loved him and we could actually have him in the cornerback discussion as well. I like what you said. Dave when were getting to the cornerback. She said i have them ten ten defensive backs making the team because some of these players malesherbes norwood They can play multiple positions so they could be technically on both of these depth charges. But still i like. I like that five that you have as well. So that's a total of twenty five on the defensive side of the ball. Do some very basic math than even jeff hartmann can do. That's fifty so that leaves us to specialists especial teams and this is normally something that we would just kinda who Here we go. Let's go over the three players. They're going to make the team. Maybe not so much this year you have make it from the specialists well as of right now camera candidate is really long snapper on the on the roster so true that's right i forgot is there. Is he a linebacker long snapper. That's what you've gotta ask. Tom and loves position versatility. Yes but he's been around for. I think this'll be his third camp so he's one of those guys that they liked to have around just in case but i don't think he's gonna knock candidate off the roster And then of course. It's not the they did. Bring in another kicker. But it's not he's not gonna knock off chris. Boswell unless there's a big problem it's mainly to keep boswell from having to kick too much through the preseason. And i have. I've got big press. I've got big press making it as at the punter over jordan berry and the biggest reason is if you go back in the history of the pittsburgh steelers. Drafting punters players. That were strictly punters. You know i'm not talking back in in nineteen thirty nine where you draft a guy. That's that's a half back a linebacker and upon her and the placekicker. I'm not talking that. But if you're drafting a guy that is a punter only upon her. They've never drafted. One did not kick every game of their rookie year. So for that reason. I think they go with the guy. They drafted so i obviously boswell. I agree with you. He's the guy he's going to be the player. That and i hope they give him kind of the ben roethlisberger treatment because he was had those nagging injuries last year. I think it was hip hip with kicker. That's a horrible injury to have. You don't want him to develop any those type of injuries in training camp. So boswell's the kicker candidates probably along sanford barring and injury in then presley. Harvard in the third. You know i remember. I joined the curtain call about three weeks ago now and they were talking about presley harbin. The third big presses. I call and thank thankfully. No one is picking up on Briny anthony davis is elvis. Je is horrible. it's what anyways big press. Because he's a big guy and he'd president a lot of weight if you check out what he did at georgia tech. I talked about how you know last year. We were all excited just me. I was excited when buried in. Make the team. They signed dustin colquitt. Anything in sweet here. We go and then he ends up coming coming back Personally harvard is going to have to play well. And i'll probably celebrate if he's still the partner at the second half so after the second half of the season if presley harvard is still the punter. Maybe that's when i will celebrate and i'll do a little diddy or something like that on the show for all those out there my writer dai crews had been wanting to hear me mates. They always. Would you look at some of the longest averages for the season in punting have been in recent years with jordan berry being the owner. I do not have a problem with jordan. Berry i do i. I have a problem with the inconsistency. It's not that he can't punt. Well it's just that he doesn't always punt well and i understand that and an honestly the biggest thing that i like with the steelers is if they see that their weaker and they could get better that. They're not afraid to do what they need to do to get better. And last year after dusted cocaine the steelers realized they could get better at punting by bringing jordan barry back and they did. I just want them to be good at it. I don't care who it is. I don't have a problem with anyone like you do. I just want them to be good at. And now you're right you're right. I have a problem with barry even sure what it is. I i absorbed that narrative. Now you can't you can't you can't backtrack on that. I'm i'm i'm way in the deep end to this thing. Dustin colquitt didn't work out for coke when he was he wasn't really good and they had to bring back berry but You know why are so many people why they hate ben even though the second he goes they're probably going to be in a bit of trouble as far as trying to rebuild and and move forward. I mean we don't know yet. I just got done saying that. They're probably gonna have a great young team to to for for young quarterback to step into but again once ben retires. You know it might be a couple of years. People can't wait for retire. Why she's just a fan. But i mean let's not pretend like jordan berries Ray guy either i mean. He's you know he's had his good days and he's as bad as but just because you never played football in your life doesn't mean you can't be critical somebody just because you can't just talk part of being a fan you know jeff. Hartmann was critical of the entire team. All the time probably wouldn't be the editor of one of the most popular steelers sites around. Nobody kicks this way. Nobody is this gonna putter in the nfl. He's better than everyone. We've seen point in history you know. It's almost like the the steph curry. You know kind kind of thing where he comes out and starts shooting threes and making them and all of a sudden everyone else's is learning and being like. Hey we can do that to a the game has changed. Puffiness changed and the punters today. Like you said yeah. Jordan berry does not rank well with planners across the nfl. But if you look at steelers history. "How it goes. I have a list based on ninety man rosters. Okay so this is going to change. But we don't know the steelers roster yet of course we don't have their snaps that they're playing this year in order to do this snap way today. A h so the best i can do is tell you the average age of the ninety man roster and right now for the pittsburgh steelers their average age there ninety man roster is twenty five point four four the got to remember a lot of guys that aren't going to make that team are the younger guys. Guys that are trying to crack their way in the nfl and and catch on with the team. Things like that there could be. There's occasional older guy that just is going to get cut because they don't have it anymore but generally the average age is get dropped down during training camp because of somebody players there now if you want to know where this is this. The steelers were ranked twentieth opposite their the twentieth. Youngest team right now so that puts them asaba just making sure. I had my numbers right. Sorry for positive for a moment there that puts them eleventh. If you're looking for the older steam believe it or not right now the oldest team the houston. Texans the houston. Texans have that have that. Have the oldest age based on everything It goes houston san francisco arizona new england tampa baltimore buffalo tennessee chicago new york giants. And then the steelers who have the same two decimal places the same average age as both the washington football team and the detroit lions. So that's where they sit right now but that's gonna change but that's the best we can do based on the data right now so the number might look younger for the steelers but the fact that there eleven still has them in the top half. I think that's where you wanna be. I'm confident that this goes back to the merger. So i'll just at least say that kicking it in one thousand nine hundred seventy eight. You had craig colquitt. He punted in all sixteen games. He had sixty six punts. He averaged forty point zero yards per punt and on his career average forty one point three so below the average first year not surprising the next punter. Oh and he was. He was a third round draft. Pick by the white guy for that in the next drafted by the steelers was in nineteen eighty two. It was john goodson. He punted nine games. You're like oh. I only nine remember what you're saying. It was drafted nineteen eighty two. That was the strike year. He punted every game but that was the strike here. And this is regular season stats. His best friend for ever passed away from l. s. and it is a devastating illness that the you don't come back from and it is has been said that it's the equivalent of being trapped inside your body as it goes is just unfathomable to me. I can't even fathom. I can't process it if i was trapped inside my body. The only the only thing that could think of is a night terror or you're having a dream and you know you've gotta wake up in your trying to fight your way out of it actually hurts your way out of it because you know you're asleep you're trying to wake up and you feel trapped. I'm almost thinking it would feel like that. I don't know for a fact. I just that would scare me more than anything. I've had family members that have had it We we all went through.
