"You know, not any I thought Haskins could be similar to Rothlisberger. But Rothlisberger is a is a really really big guy. He's at least six five, and he's probably to sixty Haskins is six three probably two thirty in a big difference in their like when you're around Ben. And you see a defensive lineman throwing them around, and you go man, I mean, that's a herculean task. Because Ben is a big guy. But to be able to move to sidestep to be able to have that vision. That's really important. I don't know if Haskins had that one scout said if you move him off his Mark, he's not very good. So in scouting vernacular. If I get you a little uncomfortable out of the pocket or you're not where you like to throw. Then you're not you're not as good. But you know, we nitpick. But that's what happens this time of the year. We'll check in with the Phillies coming up the great baseball writer Jayson stark. And really the point of this for me. Is you got Bryce Harper. And I think it's a team friendly deal. But also Bryce Harper saying publicly I've had conversations with Mike trout. The likelihood of Mike trout turning down the angels extension. Even if it's going to be twelve or thirteen years for four hundred million dollars, and it'll be in that range. What do you want to go home to play with the Phillies? And is that the plan? Find out next is twenty after the hour here. Dan, Patrick show. It happens to the best of us right before a big deadline or just when you're printing handouts. "Has obviously been around for a long time. I mean, you could you could you could put the word baseball shift and Ted Williams in there. And you could see a, you know, like what looks to me like a newspaper graphic if you will from back in the fifties and the forties of shift against Ted Williams. And and so it's been around forever. But it is exploded. I mean, it's absurd Scott Boris again was on a couple of weeks ago. He said, it's biased against lefties and his point is, absolutely. Well, taken in the point that you cannot have four guys on the right side on the left side of second. Just for the mere fact nobody's covering I in the same way that you could do it against the lefty having four guys on the right side of second. It's so what do you think the your best guess would be the language? It's. That's a hard one. You know, I have to lot of questions about this. And I I would say all that they have committed to so far is to on the left side second base and two on the right side of second base. But would would you be allowed to put in fitters in the outfield? They haven't gotten that far yet. Would you be? Would you say a shortstop second basements three inches from second base? And then charging the other side of the bag as the pitches thrown depends. How to rule is written? There are a lot of ways you can go. I had people from from teams asked me. How are we defining an infielder, you know, suppose I decided to make my shortstop outfitter and I play him in the short right field. This would be very hard to word and very hard to enforce. I don't think anybody disputes that part. But here's my thing. Rich. I love baseball. I'm for anything that makes the game. Better. More entertaining. Something that more people love and talk about and all this should be part of the conversation. That's really why wrote the peace. Let's start the conversation. All right in his Pete Rose gonna be signing autographs in Vegas. I mean, this this. Sam at the Balaj, you know, in that area that I mean, he's always been. I mean, I'm kind of being serious. But do you think I have not checked the schedule, but he's autograph during hall of fame induction week? So I would winter meetings. We'd be any different winter meetings in Vegas. That's an interesting choice. It really remains for baseball. Jason. Thanks. Time before rich joy. Oh, yeah. Has it? Really? It's interesting. I'm. Ten years ago. Well, it's changed a little bit. The blue man group. I think still there though. Away. We'll probably sign a nine year. Two hundred twenty million dollars address Boris Cirque du Soleil is the two shows. Not good to chat with Jason. You bet same near. That's Jayson stark at Jason S T. I follow him on Twitter. You should too great stuff. And.

"Eight. AM eastern time. He's none of them. Jayson stark Houria Jason rich. I'm great. How are you my friend? I'm doing fine. So is there going to be a special Bryce Harper corner or everybody just go from the winter meetings to his house is there shuttle? I mean what what's the setup here in Vegas? Lives in Vegas where the winter meetings are in his town in the year that he's a free agent. You just can't make this stuff up. I I I would say it's safe to assume that got bores has been collecting every bell, and every whistle that could be collected. And. The brace. Harper storylines will be wurley whether he signed meetings. There's a whole nother story. But we'll be talking about them nonstop. Why had him on the show a couple of weeks ago, Scott Boris, and I asked him if he's going to wait from charter to go first, he says, those are two totally unrelated issues. Do you believe that? No, they're not one is gonna set the market for the other. You know, Scott has this ability to create a bidding war in which the war is not necessarily team per team. But teams bidding against this mythical records that he believes Bryce needs to set Bryce needs to be the highest paid player in the game either measured again, the highest dollars per year or the biggest total contract with Jim Carlos Stanton deal or ideally in Scots world, both and. Even if there's only one team in the bidding, I I'm convinced. It's Scott will find a way. To have that team did against that dynamic. But the other side of the coin is Dan Lozano thinks the same stuff about many. And so, of course, they're linked. But I mean, so what do you think the market is for both? Let's start with with Bryce Harper because we're hearing that Magic Johnson's flying out with the dodgers contingent to go hang out in Vegas. That was the the yacht. Who sports report the other day that the dodgers shot down that magic even personally shot down. And I would not count out the dodgers. I mean, you can't right. But I also had people inside the dodgers tell me in within the last counter year. So we're out of the ten year nine figure contract business. Well, they're not gonna get Bryce Harper with at signing him for lease ten years, and at least nine figures that's safe to say, right? So we will we'll see about that part of it. The dodgers have played it very coyly. But it's such a perfect fit. It's certainly something to watch. Okay. So how many teams do you think are in on on Bryce Harper? I mean again that Yahoo sports report by Jeff passan, Tim Brown said upward of a dozen teams as you know, as I called around and about that since I I would take the under on that. I think it's really a much tighter circle. I think so is art completely in it. The White Sox clearly in it the national are lurking. But it's more challenging for them. Now after the Patrick Corbin deal. And then the many are truly monitoring this. I don't think they're bidding. But there then they don't need Jason date. They don't need him. I mean, you've got you've got in your outfield. Obviously you've already got that three hundred million dollar player or whatever else is left on Stanton's contract. Judge is a generational talent. That the whole fan base is head over heels in love with you're not putting him in center field. I mean, the it so while and. And on that front too. I don't think they need Machado either. I don't I don't care the D gregorious might not play next year. I mean, how many people come back from Tommy John surgery and throw one hundred miles an hour. I mean, I'm serious get through the you'll need to commit three hundred million dollars to to Manny Machado, if you're the Yankees, but I will. I'm with you. I think many is actually the better fit. You know, there are a lot of parallels here to Aaron Boone gets hurt playing basketball. And next thing, you know, Alex Rodriguez a Yankee. Concoc- that story line. Many has communicated to the Yankees from what I've heard that. He would like to be a Yankee. And again, they're clearly monitoring this are they are they gonna pay him three hundred million dollars. I don't see that depends. I think how badly he wants to be a Yankee. But the fact that he could start out playing short..

Bryce Harper sweepstakes could heat up at winter meetings

"Remember the days, right? It's out of Thursday morning. Friday morning is the rule five draft and that ends the proceedings there at the winter meetings. But when you get it. The winter as he got everybody in one place Arab Vegas, and they're going to be all packed into one hotel. And you know, every you have front offices up in a sweet, and they meet every day, basically live up there. You got the reporters walking the hallways. Really unique kind of set up something like MLB network will have their whole studio set up in the middle. Guess wouldn't be in the middle of the game floor there. But in one of the wings of the casinos. So it'll be. Rumer central and that job is everybody talks every little thing becomes a big rumor in typically, we talked about Jayson stark a little bit earlier tonight. You don't always have a whole lot of action at the winter meetings, especially early on and sometimes it will build up. But a lot of big moves already here as Paul Goldschmidt is traded for by the cardinals the Mets with their big move. In fact, they every single one of the teams in the NFL as except the Marlins is already had a big strike so far this off season. But where I am curious now is what happens with Manny Machado and Bryce Harper. The Yankees did not get Patrick Corbin. We have all this money to spend. I gotta take the Yankees are going to end up with one of those two and the Phillies you'd figure it'd be the landing spot for the other the national spend a lot of money on Corbin out. They get puts them out on Bryce Harper. But we just haven't seen them tied to. That many teams every fan base. I guess want Machado one Harper, but the actual teams and the rumor mill really has it started on them yet. And it's been the rest of the free agent market. It's been you know, kinda pick that to to this point Soviets Tennessee starting up on Sunday as to what the Mets still need to accomplish. Even after the deal this week had a chance to catch up. Nelson Figueroa best in why earlier tonight, we'll have

"I find out what I don't know about the game. That's a great motivator. But for me, I just always starting out. I just wanted to write. I never even thought about doing something in television. It just kind of all as as the world changed and the and the media landscape change. But I think the principles are still the same know there's no delete key on TV though. There's no second dra- third-round. But I think it's no I said about passionate curiosity certain come into play. And I think it's the way you treat people as well. I mean, a lot of what we do. Even though the technology's really change a ton ally hasn't changed in terms of how we really up rate on the currency of trusts. No. Roger Angell set. Best job was really to get people to bare their lives to him. You know, he always was drawn to the people who are very good communicators talked to reveal themselves part of that as a writer getting people comfortable with you that they can trust you. They can share their lives and their stories, and maybe didn't share on it every day. And you know, it's hard for me to tell somebody out to do that. But it's something you have to be aware of. And hopefully, it comes somebody naturally. But I do think it's it comes down to really relationships that you have with people working. At those skill sets individually in terms of, you know, writing a story structure of story script, you know, the mechanics of being on air, you can learn all those things and those skill sets. But I think the passion and the respect that you show to people something. That you better have inside of you to make it in this business because the great business, but as you know, Richard it's so competitive, there's so many towns of people out there that trying to do this job halfway you just not gonna make Tom my colleagues at the Ken Rosenthal. Jayson stark are very prominent on social media. The majority of the well-known baseball writer, certainly or or multi media types in the US Joel Sherman types, John Heyman are at least have a very big presence on Twitter. Maybe they're on Facebook and Instagram and other place. I just know they happen to be on Twitter. You are famously if that's the right word not on social media. Not on Twitter you've made that decision. And that's kind of the very interesting decision to me in two thousand eighteen I it just means Tom you once again or the smartest person out there. And Secondly, but it's interesting because you know, as you know, so many organizations want their people on social media, and you can understand why it's publicity for the product. It. It's a way to get your words out there to places that normally you would not get to. But you've made a decision. You miss a specific decision. Not to be part of that world. And I wonder why. Well, it's probably all the people who are who tell me met. I wish I were you or not? No, it's I guess it's just a personal decision for me. I just think I'm not comfortable with that idea about a lot of things that it's as well to, you know, especially things like snark and self promotion and things like that. I just don't have an interest in that. I I'd much rather prefer that? If he about the work that I do rather than about me personally. And listen, I write for largest sports magazine in the country MLB network. I'm box. I write dot com, you know, producing a lot of things out there. So it's not as if you know people want to read me or hear from either not option to find them. And you know, again, I do things as a feature writer and broadcaster as an analyst that you know, it's probably I like to think has some crafts involved in producing that kind of work. And you know, social media tends to be more the Mike. Crow wave variety and getting stuff out there quickly. Maybe things that you haven't really thought all the way through. And I don't know. I guess I'm giving you a long answer. And the short answer would be that it just I don't feel like suits my comfort level. Now. Listen, it's an honest answer. I appreciate that very much. And again, I think you you've probably figured out something that all of us can figure out. Why do we treat sports like a religion? Why does sports.

"Network every single Sunday get you ready for the games? He saw that he thought I hadn't chosen the dolphins at all this year. That's not true. Joe's them week one last couple of weeks. I miss fire. Any e- pointed that out. I said you to choose you this week, then he said, absolutely not. He wants me to keep missing. So there's a big game for them. This weekend with the patriots are poke question. Go ahead, Chris Brockman top of hour number to refresh it for our listening and viewing audience. Yeah, we're looking at three and teams. There's three of them right now, Kansas City Chiefs. Miami Dolphins LA Rams which of these will be undefeated the longest who stays zero in that loss calm the longest right now. And you guys say the LA Rams fifty, nine percent all my gosh. Okay. Tomorrow night to take it on the Vikings. Over in twenty four tomorrow easily. And so that's the NFL world and eight, four, four, two, four, riches the number to dial on that in the baseball world just turning baseball real quick before Jason start joins us. The Blue Jays a press conference set for right now, as a matter of fact and appears that they are firing John Gibbons, their manager right now. It's interesting. I think they've called up lag Guerrero's kid just to do that. They've been waiting all year long. He should've been playing believable and then in the National League, it's unbelievable what's going on right now. Okay. So the cubs have a half game lead in the central over the brewers who have won three in a row beating up on the cardinals who are now a half game behind Colorado. In the wildcard, grace. Colorado is a half game behind the dodgers in the NO west race. It is entirely possible. The following happens. Just just bear with me and then we'll get to Jason's stark here before Shomar more. By the way of swat on CBS joins us. If the Chicago Cubs lose their final five games, two at home to the Pittsburgh Pirates in three at home to the Saint Louis cardinals. If the Atlanta Braves go two and three in their remaining games, they are at the Mets over the next two nights and then at Philadelphia over the weekend. If the dodgers go three and one over there game tonight at Arizona and their final three at San Francisco. If Milwaukee goes, Owen four loses tonight to Saint Louis and then get swept somehow at home by Detroit. And if Colorado goes foreign one with their two games against Philadelphia and three games at home against Washington, and if Saint Louis sweeps out beating the walkie tonight and sweeps the cubs. Which would be part of the cubs going on five to finish the season. That would be a six way, tie the National League at ninety one and seventy one. I know it's kinda dumb and dumber. You're saying there's a chance, but there is what in the world would happen. Then MLB networks and the athletics Jayson stark here on the rich Eisen show. How are you? Jason, rich. I'm good. Rudy for chaos has always that's. I mean, that's not out of the realm, right? I mean, that's not totally crazy. Obviously, the cops having to lose out, they've already lost tuner. That would be a seven game losing streak for them to finish out the season. But I mean, I would say it's it's all unlikely, but you know one of these years, something like this half to happen. We've never even had a three way tie since they went to the division system. So one of these years we're going to have this madness and that's an area that you just described would be a problem. You know why? Because major league baseball does not have a six way. Tie-break tiebreaker don't have one..

"I hated the move when they did it to go from six to three because you didn't know who you're going to get, but the football gods as Bruce. Coachee, hook, Jayson stark on the best baseball article. I read this week on the Atlantic bogey flew out to Cooperstown to watch Trevor Hoffman, get inducted into the hall of fame and you basically say he went to pray to the baseball guys hoping to help the giants, the San Francisco Giants that is get back on track. And I think there is an element of your jets fan. You're just like winter, the football, God's gonna, throw bone here. What the hell is going on. And I think you finally got one. I think for the first time in a long time I had a front row seat in the bay area. I think a lot of raider fans felt like that for a long time and then the football gods through Abon with Derek Carr and Khalil every once in a while you need that to happen. And I think it happened this year Sam darnold he's going to change the frame. I've watched him at SE there, isn't it quality to them? I had a lot of friends in the league. Just watched him as a pure player that didn't quite see it, and I get it. He's got kind of a funky loopy release. He's not. I guess when he took his shirt off at the combine, it's not like he's super jacked. I don't care. I don't. I don't pay my quarterbacks lift weights. I pay him to complete balls on win games, and I watched him at a c with the coach. That's probably tab it over his head with a talent and a roster did is nowhere up to standards and all he did was last year won the Pac twelve in the year before I think he went like eleven to one and won the Rose Bowl. I mean, this guy is an ask kicker, and he's. Big time he special there. Is it quality of this guy? And I know the the analytical people would be like, how do you quantify it? I'll tell you, you don't, you don't, but you know, when you see it and this guy's got it. And I think he's going to change the franchise. Obviously not this year, even though I do think, and I've been saying for a while. There is a path to the chest winning division this year. It would take a Brady injury if Brady were to get hurt a significant injury and be out for the season, the patriots to be screwed. They no longer have two quarterbacks. They could win the division. Obviously, Jimmy was on the team. They would easily win the division regardless Brady that's no longer the case, Brian horrors. Now the backup and Brian Hort stinks. So Brian Hoyer would have to start several games, especially Brady got knocked out for the season sometime I'm not advocating for that and I don't want that to happen. But if it did, I do think the jets are clearly the second best team in the division, and I think Sam darnold he's already going to be one of those guys that people ask me often like, who are you a fan of? I'm not a fan of teams. I root for players and coaches that I like that. I admire that. I just like their game and Sam darnold player that that I like is game Dana. Jeremiah remember a couple years ago, Sam darnold first year starting. I was texting with them. He obviously lives in southern California and watches very closely. And he described him as a bigger Russell Wilson, and there's an element of Russell net now it's more quantifiable, but early on those first several couple years now, the team was much better. So it's not apples to apples, but you couldn't quantify what Russell brought to the table, but you knew it when you saw this guys kind of special, now's taking a couple years now. No one can argue easily. He's doesn't get much better. Now we'll Sam darnold one day be as good as Russell Wilson. I'm not even saying that, but there is a rustle Wellesz Wilson element to his game, and I'm Sam darnold believer in. I can't wait to watch him play. I can't wait to read, continue to read Connor Hughes, who covers the jets for the Atlantic dot com..

"It is really hard like i can't get on board with that thought process i just can't yeah now this is a part of this that didn't get into the show but i i think the one of the biggest questions we we should all legitimately have is we have been able to make it onto the field those six hundred and whatever was played appearances that year without the ds because what back it is career ninety three ninety four ninety five and add up the bets add up the games played could not get onto the field and you know i know he said this in the past that you know one one reason that he took what he took was that he he needed to recover from these nagging injuries that were that were keeping him on the dl and i think we do need to remember that when back in this era players were taken what they took for all sorts of reasons that was one of them i honestly do not believe that mark maguire did anything or took anything because he thought to himself i'd love to hit more home runs babe ruth i think his motivation was i can't get healthy and i think a lot of players were in that boat that are really all kinds of reasons we've seen i mean look and dependent independent set it right to your face my elbow was shit i was coming back i wanted to get back and and that for me was the toughest part about this whole era if you will was watching guys like mcgwire and i agree with what you just said wholeheartedly j there's no way mcguire was sitting up at night reading baseball almanac going fuck all right if i average thirty five you're on out i'm going to catch that old son of a bitch and this is gonna be mine that's not what mark maguire was thinking and he was absolutely thinking you know what if i can eat that and take that and i will actually feel better tomorrow to the point where i could be on the baseball field than hell yeah give me that and that's what everybody of cross the game for better or worse was thinking was.

"So dallas i asked to you i think we can all agree the diamondbacks a for real as they were last year they're for real again this year the rockies the giants dodgers padres the two biggest stories obviously the dbacks and the dodgers where you out on the nfl wes i think the ls just because of the dodgers and they're they're lingering and there i mean they their struggles early on i think the west is one of the most intriguing divisions to pay attention to just because the diamondbacks in the position they're in i i've been saying it on the radio show i do all fucking week which is look they're having this success without some key cogs offense ably i'll jake lamb and susan junior okay and they're doing it without a greeky who is on a roll ten right but i mean this is so the last two outings he's had i had nine punch outs outing before but he gave up five or six four five or something like that but this last outing was better ten punch outs so he's starting to find his way back to normalcy and that's a positive thought when you think about the fact that they've lost taiwan walker for the year tj out and now they've lost robbie rates that nagging son of a bitch oblique issue that and those are so ticky tack you never know how long those because like you could come back seriously fucking ten minutes too early and feel phenomenal at boom you're fucked for another three four who knows how long so there they've lost ray they got they have done this all basically running on less than optimal so to think that when they get everybody back and everybody firing if they're able to continue to separate them.
