"Mike's gone. What's one of my brother Friends? He's gonna bring us home. No. Her brother, Harry. Harold, too funny. I might have broke my headset. Jeez. Come on. Sorry about that. We're back. All right, we got to take this call because the guy's calling him from Taiwan. What's up, Danny? Danny, Daniel and Taiwan. Go ahead, sorry. No, go, please. Everybody's happy about MLB signing a deal with the union and we're going to have real baseball back, but Bryce Harper posted about playing an Asia last week in the weekend. So as a fan of Asian baseball, I just can't help but feel a little bit sad that we won't see Bryce Harper in Asian. I know, man. Look, I just like to see him here in America. How does that sound? And thanks for the call, Daniel. I appreciate it. Thanks for being a fan of our show from all the way over in Taiwan. According to TJ is that a West Coast town? Well, I mean, according to pencil, which way you're looking at the match. Honestly, it's a West Coast. Spot if Altoona's east coast, that stands the reason. You know where Bryce Harper, you know where Bryce Harper should be today. Bryce Harper should be out and front and saying baseball is back. And not just like on a video, like going to peer places, man. Sell the sport, but he's on his way to Florida, probably, right? For spring training. The show up in like some diner or whatever and shake hands with people saying, thanks for sticking with us. Let's get some. Juice going. Yeah, there you go. Bryce Harper arrived at spring training 8 minutes ago. Great. He's here. Where's the Phillies spring training? Sarasota or something? Who's the walk in video? And that's where there. I don't know, man. I just, the baseballs get your stars out, man. It's a sport that has the stars out the least. All right. Joe linard, when.

"Jefferson. No, no, no, no. Turns out turns out. He's got his own. Al you're on the pain of mindless. Let's get him a little bit. A little bit, it's tax season. The one I gotta do, doing my thing, the next thing you know, treat it like, you know. No, no. Noted. Noted Al. Okay, so Brock when I'm gonna put that on your plate. Got it. That's a problem for you out. Okay. Thanks for the call. Appreciate it. Thank you. All right, this is an original. Pete and Delaware May he rest in peace. He was one of our first, right? There's a Micah Jacksonville who occasionally pops his head up. 'cause he's a steeler fan who does not like Chris brockman at all. Nathan? Okay. We're missing. We hear you out on our apologies. Yeah, I mean, in the meantime, though, we gotta focus on Joel and Artie. Is my team in or out? What do you think? I think my team's out. I think you're in. You think we're in? Yeah. They like me. You were second to last for in. I don't know. I don't know if that changed yesterday. They like having you, you guys are. I just saw on CBS that Jerry palm says we're out. By the way, that sounds like a name that was made up in summer camp. You got caught? What bunk are you in? I'm in bunk with Jerry palm. No offense, Jerry. Is he related to Ken palm? Those guys are the same. No, I think his sister is Rosie. See, I thought about saying it. And I was like, there's no way I'm gonna say this. Thank you, rich. Tell two funds gone..

"That's the one that I forgot to ask that of Jason stark. You know, turn the machines back on. Can you get them back? Just kidding. That's our new thing, rich. We get them back in the next time we talk about it. 8 four four two O four rich is the number to dial. Joe linari with his bracketology, Indiana was down 13 at the half to my Alma mater yesterday and came back and beat Michigan and beat the doors off him in the second half. And the 9th seeded Indiana hoosiers just knocked off the top seat in the Big Ten tournament, Illinois, bounced. Indiana, Mike Woodson going on a run here. How about that? So that's a pretty huge one. Well, maybe we'll get there. We're just taking a look at all these other scores right now. I'm going to work their work. I mean, they were good. Okay. I mean, I'm just, I kind of paid attention. Oh, they're in 1912. Who, Indiana? Yeah. I think they're in now. They just bounce Illinois. They just clutched it. I'll be honest, that was my plan for Michigan. Beat Indiana go beat Illinois and just wrap it up. So if that was the case for Michigan, it should be the case for Indiana. That's a fourth quad one win for Indiana. It's a quad 1.1. Oh, those are the best wins. Yeah. Yeah. Allen Dallas, what's up Albert? Yeah. I was laughing, right? When you sit here. Rich, you didn't do your best brockmire with the Sam Pedro de margarita. Sam Pedro de macareus. Ladies and gentlemen, hitting their way off the island of San Pedro de macareus. There you go. Brockman. He thinks a little bit more insulted right now, rich. By you know, forget your kids. A little bit. Now now, you did. You told me to go get my Sean box. The baseball's back. I'm getting back in the hate Yankees mode. What's up, pal? I'm a little bit. He kind of took it a little or is it rich? Or is it me? Because what I'll do respect to my man now, this is no shot at my man. My man Jeff from Detroit's got some sick banner going. I'm watching on the TV and I was first and he's not wrong. I don't need to graphic. I'll need you graphic. The original Al's and original. I was an OG of this program. We all I got you. Ow. Ow, you were out in Houston. And now you're out in Dallas, you know? Yeah. I mean, again, this is no shot at my man. Jeff,.

"There was one try it out. Very aggressive pitch clock. 15 seconds in what used to be the California league last year. And it didn't just produce better rhythm. There were there was more action strikeouts went down. Walks went down, there were more base runners and what a watch. The game was more entertaining. It was fun to watch. It's really encouraging. Whether we can get to that in the big league, I'll believe it when I see it, but I do think this is the beginning of a process that hopefully will make the game more entertaining. It's current version. Well, in terms of the shift, Jason, I've been tilting it that windmill from this table and this desk, this microphone for quite some time. I want to make sure that let's just say when I'm watching the yanks and from last year Rizzo lace one into right field and I'm a 52 year old man and for the first 50 years of my life, I know that was a base hit that was going to find space in right field. And instead, the opposing team's third baseman is positioned out there in short right field and he just grabs it easily on the line and trots into the dugout to end the rally. And I want to make sure that's over. So when you say nobody in the outfielder, you're going to see like another line in the outfield beyond which somebody who is booked in the lineup as an infielder is not allowed to tread into that space prior to a pitch. Is that what you're saying? Yes. They have this great invention called infield dirt. No, so that will be the point of demarcation. Nope, no infielder can set up before the pitch in the outfield. And this is a rule that was tried in double-A leagues last year and the results were really interesting. Just having two incentives and each side of the second base did not turn that board up the middle ahead because there's still somebody standing right behind second base. But keeping in theaters out of the outfield, that worked. The average on line drives that clear the infield went up by 50% to 50% more hits on balls like that. And so to me, that's a step in the right direction. And just in the big picture, baseball negotiated the right to do what the other sports do. If you think the rules aren't working, the sport has the right to change them without negotiating for years and years and years and years with players who are always going to be split pictures versus hitters on everything you propose. And so just like the NFL, what's the product and says, we want more passing, we want more points. We want to protect quarterbacks. Right. Baseball will be able to do that in the future starting next year. And I think that's really important. So when you say starting next year, it's new competition committee that gets together. So they're going to have to talk about it. And then have a vote on it. So 2024 is when we might see this sort of change. Is what you're saying? Three things that will happen in 2023 that we know are shift pitch clock larger bases, which are both a safety thing and actually do promote base dealing. Then any rule change beyond that, it can come out of this competition committee, but the committee is while it will include active players and an active umpire. The majority of the members of the committee represent naively baseball. And so basically, the sport will finally have the authority to do what it thinks needs to be done. So all the stuff that the UX team has been working on behind the scenes, like he can actually make some of that come to life if they think it's going to change to work. Please tell me the fine print says any active umpire not angel Hernandez though. Please tell me that. I haven't seen that far. Okay, it just makes your art. Real quick hitters with you, Jason stark before I send you on to this good Friday here. The new playoffs. What does that look like? One extra wild card team in each league and instead of a one game it becomes a best of three. So here's the way it works. It's very NFL like. Top two records in each league get a buy. Then that first round is division winner, the division winner with the third best record and a wild card with the best record among the wild card teams host all three games. Versus the two remaining wildcards. And the idea is that will go quick. And those are three those are three game sets. Best of three games series. And again, it's the two best games. It's two best, it's two best division winners, right? Because not best records, because that would mean the Dodgers and giants of this past year, right? Would have gotten. Okay, two division winners with the two best records. But unlike last year, the Dodgers would host all three games of that wildcard round because they had the best record of all the wild cards. Okay, so there's no road to everybody just staying there. It's like a three game set. Right? Like it's three games in three days in a row, no off days, right? Exactly right. Okay, that's the first round. And then the better seed of either one of those faces, the same seeds one, two, right? And the next round? Well, no, this is interesting. They're not going to receive. So the number one seed plays the winner of the three versus 6 series. Rather than the three versus well, I guess if the 6 comes out. Right. Okay, that's interesting because if it was the NFL, whoever the lowest seat is coming out would go to the one and then the next one would go to the two. All right. Okay. And then so on and so forth till we have a World Series champion. What about umpiring and getting them to be robots that are any conversation about that? And there was a lot of conversation about electronic ball strike. And look, we're going to have that at some point. This is one of those rule changes that you might look for in 2024. Baseball is experimenting with this now at the highest levels of the minor leagues this year. And what does that tell you? It tells you, this is going to happen in the big leagues once they get the technology to where it needs to be. And then the other thing is you need to readjust the definition of the strike zone because soon this thing in action and the robot thinks balls are strikes that literally no one else search in the entire stadium. So you've got to fix that part. Oh boy. Before I let you go then, free agency, Freddie Freeman's on the move. What do you think? That's the biggest name that's out there. Still? I mean, people talk about college Korea. I am obsessed with the Freddie Freeman. Me too. You know, everybody has thought for how long and it is a foregone conclusion that he was going back to Atlanta. Maybe I missed something. If it was a foregone conclusion, wouldn't he be heading for braves camp right now? They should assign them last spring. They do that? No. Could assign them during the summer, didn't do that..

"That's when Jason stark of the athletic MLB network Hall of Famer will join us on the program. So I pick coop up yesterday from school. Okay. I'm taking him to his little league practice. All right. He's there in his Tampa Bay Rays at uniform. Oh man, killer. But it's understand. Look, I understand the pecking order these days. It's tough for me as a Yankee Fanta handle, but it's great. He looks great in it, and I turn to him because how many times I told you he's like, dad, when are we going to do our fantasy? Because we pop on and sneak into just a random fantasy. League every year, and we want it last year. And he's really good at it, my son, like he was like, let's pick up Robbie ray dad. Oh, he's a sigh on the winner. So anyway, long story short, I tell him because I've been telling him there's no draft right now. 'cause there's no league and you do, what is it? You can't look at 11 year old and talk about an international draft and bonus pools and all that sort of stuff. So he gets in the car and I told him an hour before guess what just happened. I'm like, they came to an agreement. There will be baseball this year. I wish I had my camera on him. He was smiling happy because when were you going to do it? Who could be a free agent for the Yankees? God bless on the straight now. And so then we go to we go to the little league practice. And the fact that he's there and left handed hitter and the left handed pitcher, you know? And now that he'll be able to watch baseball so he can get an understanding now that he's getting the mechanics and the coaching to understand what he's doing, how he can, as playing first base, he's got a stretch, and he's a pitcher. He's got a stretch. It's so amazing. And I sat there and thought to myself, as he's running out as an 11 year old, I'm going to get emotional about this. As an 11 year old, he's running out there in his uniform. And I thought to myself, could you imagine? Being a Major League Baseball player, you're 25 year old guy, 28 year old guy, 30 year old guy, even if you're lucky to play solely, you get to put on a baseball uniform. And B just like this 11 year old, every day and you're paid an insane amount of money. What is this the greatest thing of all time? Okay. And I don't want to dampen that. It's not exactly the same. What do you mean? Being 25 and being in the majors is not being 11. What I'm saying, you get to be like a kid. Out there on the field. I still think no. You don't think so? I don't think it's the same. Sadly, it's a business. That's what I was sitting there thinking. I was getting emotional..

"Few days, right? With a new league year coming up and he's Josh McDaniels, a Derek car guy, is he not? Would the colts go Yolo for him? Do they have the draft capital for him? What about the Carolina Panthers? And then the Raiders would then suddenly be in the quarterback needy market unless they go and get the Jimmy G 'cause you know McDaniels knows him very well. And he would be just plug and play into the Josh McDaniels system. So that's no way good for a while, and now sticking with the plan. How has that changed over the last few days and weeks? Sticking with the plan. Well, Titan's sticking with their plan are not going away from tanning although they were supposedly on the Rogers front. The jets are sticking with it, clearly the bears are. We put the commanders here. That's their new plan. It's Wentz. We're sticking to it. We don't care if you call us desperate. The niners are sticking with the plan. They still got Lance. The browns are sticking with their Mayfield play on the Giants are sticking with their plan. The dolphins are sticking with their plan. And we added a new tile. It's not a team logo for those listening on radio. And we placed it underneath the San Francisco forty-niners logo. Sticking with the plan, question mark, Tom Brady. Are you sticking with the plan? Are you sticking with your plan to retire? Because if he pulls the linchpin on that, you go to the bucks, do the forty-niners say, okay, if you're talking about on Freddie couple's podcast about sleeping in your own bed that you grew up in and your folks house, maybe you're thinking about it. Oh no, we'll give you enough. We'll give you enough scratch. You could buy a new bed. A whole house. Yeah. In addition. Another boat? Bedrooms on top of it. So it is the plan with Tom Brady. Is he sticking with the plan to retire? 'cause if he doesn't, oh, baby. And I think he's going to see his all play out, he's going to hang out with the fam. He's going to go see the folks again. We'll see him. We'll see him. Yeah, come out the coast. And then if not, then we'll welcome him back to the party pal. That's lurking. And that's the way the quarterback carousel currently looks going into next week's and this weekend's frenzy as we will call it on NFL network. We'll take a break, come back, 8 four four two O four rich number to Dow, phone calls on the way, the next phone call from Jason stark, baby. Baseball. What's going on? Baseball. Baseball. Man stands alone at the plate. We're back. He'll tell us how it happened. We won't get too deep into the weeds, but then how are the changes going to hit and then free agency? Freddie Freeman would look really good in The Bronx, New York. Stop it. You would, he would look. Please, you wouldn't know that too, Christopher. Amazing. How would he look in Fenway pack? Trying to yanking around pesky's pole. I think he's great, right where he is. It's not a you were just such a homebody man. Just a very loyal partner. Stop it. Looks great, right, where he is. When a title run it back, please. Go breath. That's weak sauce. So you have multiple teams now too? We'll talk about someone that I live with. He's got to go home. Come on. That's why it's weak sauce. He's got to come on the rich eisen show and give you take. Of course you want him in Boston. I'll speak for you. Sorry, Sarah. It's all good. Why are golfers usually play a blade putter? Is it the way it feels or looks? Maybe it's the pros they see on TV playing one and think maybe I should too. Truth is you sacrifice a lot of forgiveness to play a blade until aha. The new try hot 5 K from Odyssey has come along and it's built a blade unlike any other engineered using multi material construction tube dramatically increased forgiveness called MOI at 5000 MOI. That's where the 5 K comes in in the try hot 5 K it's the kind of forgiveness you'd expect from a mallet. Now it's delivered in a blade..

"Shaq wondering how much it is for tank of gas. It's only a happy 20 bucks in 20 bucks and if you stop here, if we're trying to we're not geographic experts and we're not maximizing geometric experts. We're not geometric. We're not geographic experts either. I know we're some stuff. Well, you still see that. You still say the middle of Pennsylvania is east coast. It is. And I say it's Eastern Time. Well, that's tomatoes tomato. So Jason stark's going to join us shortly. By the way, on that front. Real quick about this Khalil Mack tree. I've got a little bit of an issue with it. Doesn't that seem like it might be tampering or something? Because Aaron Rodgers is the owner of the bears and he got rid of his competition's best player and sent him to another conference. So why is that a lot? Why is the team owner allowed to trade a player knowing that he's got to go up against him? I don't get it. I see you working. I see he's working on that. So do we give him a golf clap for that tape? Sure, that's pretty cool. Thank you guys. I'm just saying. He's the bear's owner, right? Very good. How about Joe Biden former former league executive thinks that it's the right move for the bears that you're in a smart that the new general manager Ryan pulls. Is making the right maneuver right there. He also just said, this is a perfect way to put a Joe banner nailing sticking the landing on Carson Wentz. Not one but now two teams have sent him packing when it was costly for the team to do it. They have had so much invested in him. The eagles in draft capital go get him and then giving him the contract when they gave it to him. Money and draft capital and they said we're done here. And the colts then say, we'll give you the draft choices. Two that can turn into a one which it did and a three and they one year and with this coach that he relates to apparently and they say we're done here and Washington knowing all that says we'll take you. That's why we're skeptical about it. That's why we're wondering if the Washington commanders are desperate you hear the word desperate, I'm sure the Washington commanders Rivera and everyone else there will take offense to that that they're not desperate. But it does smack of desperation when you take somebody he is young and he is big and he is strong and you can see he takes a licking and keeps on ticking. He does have that. Remember that everyone's like whence can't stay healthy and he played all 16 games in his last full year in Philadelphia before he started taking all those sacks and had to be benched and then he was basically unusable at the end of his Philadelphia tenure. And the colts say will take him, reichs like I know him, let's do it. They did it and they had buyers remorse at some point during the season. Appears to be almost immediate based on how quickly they just got rid of him here in Washington's will take him. And then you look at the NFC right now. And the quarterbacks in there, you've got, you know, Rogers is the clear class of it. Matt Ryan and his $48 million salary of who knows how effective he can be. The saints are in the quarterback market. Carolina is in the quarterback market. The bucks don't have Brady anymore. In the NFC, let's see what Justin Fields can do. Let's see what Kirk Cousins can do in his last year and his golf the right guy. In the NFC east, you've got dak Prescott sitting at the top of the roost. The Giants running it back with Daniel Jones. The eagles saying Jalen hurts could be the guy or not even Joe banner said they're gonna probably do it one more year to see if he is 100% that guy and now Carson Wentz sits there. Kyler Murray and the defending world champs in the rams have Matthew Stafford, who knows what the Seattle Seahawks are gonna do. That's what maybe 5 quarterbacks do you have faith in? And then Trey Lance is coming round the corner. That's the NFC quarterback and then the AFC burrow, mahomes, Allen, Russell Wilson, Lamar Jackson, 5 Matt Jones showing you what he did last year. What about Baker Mayfield's future don't know? Don't know what this deal is going to do. The jets sure hope they got their guy and draft and Zach Wilson two is going to get some run. Tannehill is good. Dude, Derek car is good. The AFC, it's just a total different lopsided balance. Going into the new league year. Now then, before we go into next week, this weekend, you're going to start hearing some rumors in the NFL about who might go where and who might go here and there. You're already seeing it, right? With some trades that won't become official to lex Wednesday when the new league year and the NFL begins and everybody's got to be cap compliant and.

"Agreement has been hammered out and Jason stark will be joining us a Hall of Fame writer baseball writer will be joining us to tell us the how it quickly came together, but once that, I'm just kind of curious how it just came so together so fast. It just proves again. They know what the number is. They know what the number that they're willing to do is it just takes forever for pig heads and alpha males to get the F out of the room and out of the way. And sanity to actually land. I'm serious, man. I've been through enough of these. It's that simple. They all know what it would take. They all know what it would take. And thankfully they did, but now there's a universal DH as apparently 12 teams making the playoffs, 6 in each league and the top two division winners. There's three division winners. The division winners with the two best records get a buy. And then the third best division winner, unfortunately, has to play a first round series against what appears to be the weakest link on the wild card ladder. The third best team outside of a division winner. And then the two wild card teams would normally make it would play one another. I believe that's what it is. I've tried to read up on this a little bit, and then there is a universal DH, meaning hard. Thank God. You don't need to see Max Scherzer hit, which by the way is like watching paint dry. I've done that before. I've done both. And so that should pet things up a little bit. And then I was looking for that whole business that the shift is gone. But it's not gone. It's not going to all but it's going to be in front of some competition committee that's being formed with players and owner representatives. So because the commissioner used to just be able to say, we're doing it and you've got a year to get used to it. And I guess now they're going to be more collaborative to get the players on board for bigger bases and then a pitch clock and then the shift first order business. Get rid of that F and shift. Get the F out. Get rid of it. Oh my God. I don't understand the need for the larger basis. They're trying to save it for safety. Like a first base, but I do ask a Dodger fan what happened to max muncy at the end of the season last year. It just happens once. I get it. But that's all it takes. Buster Posey, right? Then a rule change gets put in there. Bigger paces. What does it matter? Well, now it's not 90 feet between bases. I guess. Now it's like 89 feet. Well, the beginning of the bag is still in the same spot. So the feet wouldn't change with only, right? If it's a larger space, if a base ends here and now it's here, then it's closer between the bases. The whole thing is crazy. It just doesn't even make sense. I guess. It's still 90 feet from home to first. But now from the first to second. The first. I didn't think. I think what we need to do though is we need to stop this conversation here because we're slowly inching into the territory of.

"So that was that was a shame, But you know everybody who saw standing there with the pirates really typical pirate of of those days. You know Al Oliver and Richie Hebner and Been startled that he just one tremendous hitter after another seven hits in a nine inning game seven for seven. Yeah, tonight. Any game? Yeah, about that. Any night came off for did it Next trainings and And the Bagley brought standing and Crawford together is really nice. Very Yes, Absolutely. Very nice. Very sweet. But yeah, so that was already standing. He was part of the nine players of the Pirates did this in the early seventies member. They put the all Latin and African American Starting nine out there, and he was one of them. It's the first time that had ever happened in Major league baseball least and this part of baseball. Yeah, I think they asked Danny Murtaugh about it. He goes. What do you mean, like he was trying to do it? These are the guys I want out there, you know. Yeah, that was Rennie Stennett. The other thing is Jayson Stark had a spot on Thursday about the new rules in the lower minor leagues that encourage stealing. And he says, everything is turning into a track meet You like it? Well, yeah, it's it's tough. I mean, I love stealing meal That base dealing is would be coming back in any form. But I mean, the fact is the way the game has always been played. There have been here is whether it's Ty Cobb or Max Carry or Lou Brock or Maury Wills. Where Ricky Henderson where the stolen base was a thing. Vince Coleman, You know you don't have to make it artificial. It'll happen. Without having to Jack Jack up the rules. If I'm a pitcher in the rule in the lower a ball now is that he's only got to pick off moves. You know and get and you know you guys were taken enormous leads. And like you say, it's it's turned into a track meet. I don't know. I mean, uh, that to me that zoo little rough to me. I mean, you can. You can still throw over there a third time, but the writer has to be out. You have to pick him off by this. It's a Bach so I mean, this is this is something going through a pitcher's head. I don't know that he needs to be dealing with. Especially if you're you know, good at the pick off. Move is, you know made it a nart of it. Um, but, you know, speaking of art that there's an artist stolen base, too. I mean, not everybody can do it. I need some of the fastest guys in the world, do you? They still got to figure out you know the situation, the pitcher, the catcher and everything else and to make it too easy. Like when Pablo Sandoval is going to steal 38 bases? I don't know. You know, I'm with you on this. I think the great base stealers still will steal. Bases. Yeah, and you don't you don't need, you know sand of all or Longoria having, you know, 40 stolen bases. You know, you don't need that. All right now, I think we agree. We agree on that, So that's a rule that they think they're going wild with, but I don't think I don't think that swimming in no, and that's all that's all the way down and low way. So that's not even in the Atlantic League, you know? No, we had Steve Trader on yesterday who wrote the fabulous book about the Horace Stoneham and Stone, his father in the 40 years of hard stone, a moaning the Giants. Um Bruce are stone and deserves a very special place. I think in Giants history, I just want to touch on it Briefly. We've got more with that interview next week, but hard stone and did a lot of amazing things. He seems to be known for Candlestick and drinking a lot. But he sure sees bigger touch yours. Yeah, that was his buddy in New York. But he did amazing things to revolutionize the social part of baseball. The organization And he loved the Giants. Yeah, yeah, his dad on the Giants, which is great. And then when Charles Stone him died, Horace was only 32. He takes over the team, but but he he absolutely. Did. You know, Um, I mean, Walter O'Malley was really the driving force, I guess between the two teams coming out here, but But Horace Stoneham had an eye on the West Coast way before that. During the war. The Pacific Coast League had this idea where let's come up with a third league and it's all West Coast and all the owner stopped at it. The I read except for Horace, he goes, You know, there's a lot of potential out there. We gotta think about this. So he was. He was quick to get out in the orchid at a time when he really had to do it. You know, the Polo grounds was falling apart. Their tennis was terrible and So he gets the team out here. But, um, you know, after after Jackie Robinson came in an integrated the game and chorus was the second National League team to bring in black. They brought in Hank Thompson and money urban and this was no small thing. At the time. It's not like everybody fell in line after Jackie at all. It was still a very bold moved to do, and it was just a precursor to Horace. I mean my God when the Giants came out here The team was just full of great blacks and Latin players. It was astounding, really, how many they had and just one great name after another. And so that's that's a That's a real big part of this legacy, too. So he's Hey, he should be finally remembered. I think in the big picture. Yeah, and he opened up the Caribbean scouting. He had this Alex Palm Pez in the New York Black Cubans, and he hired him for the Giants used the first African American Latin player..

"Buddy Black joins US and Bud. Normally about this point, you know, a month or so to spring training, things were starting to gear up. And while we're still hoping that's the case, there still is a lot of uncertainty. 30 days before the opening a camp You're You're exactly right, Jack A year ago, you know, spring training was set to be normal. We were there and then all the sudden the pandemic. It Now, presently, you're right. There's some uncertainty. Even though we're being told that we're on time, and we were set to go to Scottsdale and 30 days or so, but I still think in the back of everybody's mind that could be upended. But a zip now, Jack, we're being told to be ready so I think the players the coaches, everybody in around baseball is is looking the middle of February as ago But again, I think this thing this thing is ever changing and so fluid So we truly are taking this day today. And with that in mind, buddy, one of the things I would guess is of greatest concern, not just for the Rockies, but for everybody in baseball, whether it's a 162 game season, or a shorter version or multiple doubleheaders to make the one 60 to happen in the same time frame. I would guess and love your input on this because it's It's your particular area of expertise. What we're taking pictures and going from 60 games T o more than doubling, almost tripling that number from from last year. That has to be a concern, isn't it? You have to concern, Jack for sure. And I think the you know the concern is even even now You know how to prepare the pictures or or tell them now, you know, throwing program to get You know, ready for the middle of February. Even though there's still some uncertainty. That's the you know that's a little bit tricky for all of us. But You know, our guys are throwing Our guys are working out. But the pitching side is something that we really got to keep an eye on. You know? Fortunately for us, we have you know, some guys who've been through it now for a number of years with Kyle. Er mon Antonio John You know the foundation of our starting pitching. These guys were not young pitchers anymore. So they have logged innings in their career. You know, they 200 innings arm or or close to it a number of times in their careers So but you're right coming up last season, you know, and then wrapping them back up to hopefully 34 starts instead of 12. You know it's going to be something we're really gonna have to keep an eye on. With that in mind as we visit with Rocky's manager, but black here on this Martin Luther King Jr Day, John Gray has dealt with some injury issues over the past couple years on and off, not necessarily severe arm issues. But the nagging things that can Impact on a picture I saw recently that he's doing some acupuncture and other things. You just referenced that this young core is now young veterans if you will, how much of a factor from your own experience, both as a player and as a coach and manager. Is that understanding of your body Crucial for a pitcher? Very important, Jack. And I think that You know our guys along with our pitching coaches, our training staff, our strength and fishing coaches all working together. I think you have these guys in a in a really good spot. You're right. A couple of them been upended. Over the last couple years. You know, not so much of elbow or shoulder. It's been other things, right. I mean, John broke his foot. Kyle had a pulled hamstring. You know, her mom had a little bit of a tender elbow in 19. But again, I think overall, their arms or sound, but you know, knowing you know what needs to be done in the off season. Excuse me in the off season and during the season State durable to make your starts every fifth day. It's something that these guys have a handle on As you look at your club in the Iraqis, like many teams, buddy impacted economically by the pandemic and the uncertainty as to when fans will be back and other aspects to the upcoming season. Um You. You still have Ah, Core group to build your line up around in Nolan and Trevor and Charlie. Of course, this I would think from Iraqis perspective. Is the year that the the young guys like toppy on McMahon and others need to make either that step towards consistency or for Brendan Rodgers Toe finally stepped through. No doubt, Jack, I think you're exactly right. I think we're You know, pretty confident that you know Trevor Nolan and Charlie will will do their thing that they've done track record wise in their careers last year in 2020. We all don't know how to evaluate that. Right? Well, offensively we had it down here all the way across. We have some bright spots with You know with happy and Charlie had a nice run early early in the season and travels pretty consistent, but You know, for us the bounce back offensively, it's gonna take you know those whole group and the names you mentioned have to be a big part of that we've seen, you know flashes of those guys performing in the big leagues, which tells us that they're capable of doing it again in the big leagues. But the consistent performance over over six months is imperative offensive success. I think When you look at our group, Uh, you know, we can't have you can't have slumps of number of for a number of players. You know that really set you back because you're talking about a big part of the lineup over of course of the game that you know, potentially a slumping so we need those. We need those performances. For the entire season. There's gonna be there's gonna be slums. You're gonna have a bad week. You have about two weeks. But you can't have a bad month or you can have a bad half. You need that You need that performance. And I guess that I believe in Mac, I believe in Hampson. I think Copy, I think has come into his own. You know, Hopefully, the catching position can give us a little Ah little boast. Brendan Rogers is gonna be key. You know, he's probably gonna be given an opportunity. On the outset to see what he could do You know, he's comes with a lot of the claim is that as a hitter and it zlook thing like it's gonna be his time to show that so Anyhow, Jack, You're exactly right. You're right on on that. Well, I had that the top of the show buddy of front of ours, Jayson Stark on talk a little bit about his D h, uh Idea and I know you were interviewed by him as part of the column, he wrote for the athletic, pretty interesting idea. I mean, we kind of expect that the D. H is going to happen in the National League, although nothing is official yet, but, uh, nuances to that rule is he told us this morning but has been talked about by players and And front offices. If if there is going to be universal D H is it just the DHS or do we tweak it a little bit? You're writing and Jason was You know, I when I talked to him last week, you know, I'm not sure where this idea originated. But it did take my interest and I know and I sort of give him the, uh, the patent on it for for coming up with it. I don't know if that's true or not, but It is interesting and it it does. You know, give, you know obviously a great deal of responsibility and importance to the starting pitching staff each and every night. It alleviates some strategy as far as the team's using. You know, a reliever to pitch one inning and so forth, and I think, really, when you get in the middle part of the game It affect the strategy. Uh, you know, for the manager a great deal. Not unlike the You know what we have now in the National League with out of the H in the pitcher hitting so, uh,.

"I have a few more details on a major league baseball players and unions agreement on expanded playoff. You're going to hate this. No. Yeah, I know you're gonna hate Agent League Baseball Players Association has agreed to a plan to expand the playoffs. 16 teams as we discussed earlier for the 2020 season, according to ESPN is Marley Rivera. Playoff expansion still needs the final approval of Major League baseball owners. All second place. Teams in the six divisions will qualify for the playoffs, sources said. I don't like that in the seventh and eighth teams in both leagues will be chosen by the best record among other teams. This is this look You could have that central Division, which is all with filled with good teams, and one of those good teams can get left out because they're in a better division and some crappy second place team. You know, we have had problems enough with like division winners. Is this gonna bull? Whatever is this automatic playoff berth for a second place finish? We were number two in our division. Jason start the playoffs. Jayson Stark tweeted that the odds of a sub 500 team making the postseason in this 16 team field. Are better than 101 100%. You have a better than 50% chance that a sub 500 team will make the playoffs and then they're doing and then they're doing that one into seeds. Get to pick the seven and eight matchups. So again as I've said all along, OK when the Reds win this Shamma of a tournament. It ain't going to mean the same thing to me as a red state. Four teams in the postseason, blah, blah. That's all I did What I had to defeat more playoff sounds like a bigger championship, not to may. Juan Soto is going to be out for 20% of the of the league of the Games. They make it now because Unless it was a false positive. You want a man? Just just for May. I mean, listen, if you guys get a World Series for the Sox for you, Miller and for the Cubs, Abdullah and Sylvie, and you just want to wrap your arms around it, hug it like it's the greatest thing that's ever having the most important championship of your life. Why would we make it more important? It's going to be great. It doesn't have to. You don't have to run just saying it. You do which one owns, But Well, if you have multiple ones you do, Jeff. I just gotta tell you Okay. Maybe you don't because you only got one. So which daughter is your favorite? Depends on the day depends on four Siri's waddle about that. How hard that is. You have to win four. Siri's That when we get there, it won't be that hard, Optional implement something else that makes a little bit easier on everybody. Jesus. What has happened to that sport? I'm not saying that it's this system is good. I'm just saying that they will. Then we're in agreement. Okay. Ah. What else did I have for you? I had something for you. Oh, yes. The Pac 12 is planning a 10 game conference only schedule for 2020 and I believe Abdullah, aren't they starting on time Ball? No. The Pac 12 wants to start a little bit late, but they're smart. Halfway through September. Notre Dame's athletic directors Jax ur, for he wants to start and only start later and only play 8 to 10 games. You see, Tommy Brady reported today, Brady reported. Look, they're playing. They're gonna play ball, Play ball, Alabama and you told me. Ohio's high schools are starting on time. They are believe Oklahoma once again had a clean slate of tests. I'm telling you Oklahoma Oklahoma State or just going to play nine times this year. Do it just back and forth play Siri's. If this is cool floating of a floating cinema with socially distance boats is coming to Orlando. I like it. A floating similar cinema. Tickets will require you to purchase spots for the whole boat to ensure that groups will be seated with friends and family only had to allow for social distancing on between boats. I like that. "Ut Oh the hardest part is figuring out which way is easier all right that will do it why we will do a live and great show planned for you today on this worship. Wednesday and Mr Jonas knocks how are you? I'm good this statement. Game For me Rob Parker. You Know Statement Games like there's some games. Oh Yeah let me tell you why. Here's why because I'm not dumb. I see the schedule. I see the tweets. I know that there are a different host in for Chris Broussard. All throughout the week and just Wednesday happens to be my day but this is a statement day for me. It's a statement show. I'm going to make a statement that there is only one side piece for Rob Parker when Chris. Broussard is out. And that's me bottom lie and I'm making a statement today Rob Parker so Aaron Torres. No go aren't Fratto. No go one night stands and we got Mr Ben Maller one. That's right and then Brian no doce. No one night stands all of them one night stand. I'm the GO-TO at two fifteen. When he struck out on everything parker no doubt about it. Always a pleasure. And you've done most of the in on this show so there's no doubt about. You are the official couple side piece. I won't that is the most prestigious honor I've ever out of my life. The official odd couple side piece right there put it in put it in stone. No doubt I we do have a great show in the first hour. We're GONNA talk to Paul Deluca. The four time Major League Baseball all-star talk about what's going on with baseball and the negotiations trying to get this thing started for July. Fourth will do that but I Jonas let's welcome in the odd couple crew wouldn't be able to do this. Fine Radio Program. Without Him and of course rob G is our producer. Alex is our engineer. Brian Finley's on the anchor desk. He'll keep us updated throughout the program as well so we got everybody in full effect and let's kick it off Jonas with Major League baseball and what's going on as far as the behind the scenes stuff what's happening and then there's the public stuff. Yeah and you know that just because a lot of people they got all worked up when they first heard the players Balk and owners new proposal and all. My God is not going to be any baseball so far apart. And I'm like this is what they call negotiate. Yes am I right to percent hundred percent? It's the way it goes. You're gonNA hear one side offer I and they're going to try and play the public and whenever this stuff gets out and it gets public. It's it never looks good. And it never reflects good on the people who have the decision to counter offer or reject occur current offer because they greedy. It's why we've talked about before. Derek jeter's final negotiation with with the New York Yankees team. He had been with his entire life all twenty years. They were brutal. They were very contentious. Dare Gier was pissed off at this is part of negotiations. No doubt about an think from the standpoint this is I mean could could. They're not season shore? That could not be a season. They missed two world series in one thousand nine hundred ninety four but this is to me. Jonas. I don't think baseball I'm talking about either side can afford to do this. I don't you imagine what what kind of blowback it would if this summer. We have no baseball. Because they're squabbling over money. When people are all out of work people a furloughed. People are in dire straits financially. Do Do you know one of Zion? Rich people aren't dumb. Rob Okay. They understand rich. People aren't dumb. They realize if you shut this whole thing down. It's a bad look but what's happening is the players. Union is doing what they've done for years and years and they're establishing themselves as the best union in professional sports and it's not even close. Yes they're not. And it's the best union I think in this country. It's it's not even close. You can't even you can't even debated you talk about totally together at all times and what major league. Baseball's owners are trying to do is divide and conquer. Have you noticed that both proposals that have come out have been from the owner side and then the details of the proposals have come out in the middle of pandemic so it makes these higher highest paid players in baseball? Look like bad guys if they turned out and seven million dollars because everybody out there thinking with their wallet and not the wall of player who signed a contract for thirty five forty million dollars a year. That's from the owner side units. How in this latest proposal? The top paid players are really really punished. As far as taking a salary cut. But it's the players on the bottom who aren't hit his hard. What's that called? Divide and conquer so. The players on the bottom of the pay scale are saying. Whoa WHOA. Whoa WHOA maybe. This isn't such a bad thing. And then you get you get players arguing with each other and then there's dissension it's why the players association has been so public about weird disappointed disappointed. We're this we're that it's all about. We they totally believe in unity. And they're not GonNa let these guys divide and conquer exactly and so you're right and so you hear some of this stuff. It doesn't sound promising but Jayson stark from the with the athletic now and he used to work the at the old network and Jonas I think he his he made a point which is really good. It ain't just about this year that you're talking about it's about next year as well and if if this year doesn't come off next year Mookie Betts is in getting four hundred million dollar contract right. Do you know what I mean now. And most of the players don't have deals for next year so there'll be no money coming. I mean there's a whole big thing so you gotta work to salvage this year and then be able to be ready because the CBA comes up right. It's negative year that they need to start working on the new one so this is something I think both sides will have to work to get this thing ironed out because up. It is imperative imperative that there is baseball is summer. Jonas ever and listen players. Don't want to set a precedent that they're willing to work with owner. Those players don't want to set a precedence if they're willing to work with owners in this situation because if you remember we talked about at the time Manny Machado Bryce Harper. How long those guys had to wait. Scott Boris going public about how upset he was at the idea of these guys..

"You go what you know is any prepared as any stretch and now it's everything about him was built it was different just not how we prepared for the game but you know he didn't seem like a a guy that was that competitive in the clubhouse a happy go lucky kid but when he was on the mound he was all business and then that's when he would find focus and get it done so I mean I could go on and on about things that made him so on orthodox but that's what made him the freak in such a special guy in in giants history they're very very very special very special yeah you know I just want to say the dominance of that curveball when he started flipping a curve ball in there and the slider to yellow slider toward the end a lot of those just like Marty were saying about Gordon a lot of those as regards the middle initial this fall over and they're all outside the strike zone that's what made the exchange of so dominant in the curve ball because they were so late breaks old wafting with the curveball was so tight and that's one of the reasons I think Sanchez caught a little bit more because he threw a lot of balls and Kirk and with the second no hitter center Scott I thought she was awesome back in he he was a one of the better receivers as a backup catcher the giants have especially beyond posing yeah you're right great job in that game yeah it was the last part of it though if the census was the magnet to get hit yeah yeah we didn't know if he was gonna make every game you get a felt tip that you'd go down and he'd be you know gasping for air and that we would be looking at it they wouldn't want to go out on the field because it was like every start he would get banks somewhere and we're thinking this guy gonna die and a fielder's beginning he really did take his lumps out there is something all right we're gonna take a break right that promise RAF we try to take a break or two in our segments but what I want to talk about next than adjacent stark wrote a great column about it in the athletic this week really good and well you probably remember this of the Benji Molina home run that wasn't and with the manual bursts a pinch running and all this stuff it's it's a tremendous story so I want to chat about that there's a set in the athletic Jayson stark this week wrote a really good calm about it so we'll talk to bill and then whoa right after this it right after these messages talking baseball with.

Bryce Harper sweepstakes could heat up at winter meetings
"Remember the days, right? It's out of Thursday morning. Friday morning is the rule five draft and that ends the proceedings there at the winter meetings. But when you get it. The winter as he got everybody in one place Arab Vegas, and they're going to be all packed into one hotel. And you know, every you have front offices up in a sweet, and they meet every day, basically live up there. You got the reporters walking the hallways. Really unique kind of set up something like MLB network will have their whole studio set up in the middle. Guess wouldn't be in the middle of the game floor there. But in one of the wings of the casinos. So it'll be. Rumer central and that job is everybody talks every little thing becomes a big rumor in typically, we talked about Jayson stark a little bit earlier tonight. You don't always have a whole lot of action at the winter meetings, especially early on and sometimes it will build up. But a lot of big moves already here as Paul Goldschmidt is traded for by the cardinals the Mets with their big move. In fact, they every single one of the teams in the NFL as except the Marlins is already had a big strike so far this off season. But where I am curious now is what happens with Manny Machado and Bryce Harper. The Yankees did not get Patrick Corbin. We have all this money to spend. I gotta take the Yankees are going to end up with one of those two and the Phillies you'd figure it'd be the landing spot for the other the national spend a lot of money on Corbin out. They get puts them out on Bryce Harper. But we just haven't seen them tied to. That many teams every fan base. I guess want Machado one Harper, but the actual teams and the rumor mill really has it started on them yet. And it's been the rest of the free agent market. It's been you know, kinda pick that to to this point Soviets Tennessee starting up on Sunday as to what the Mets still need to accomplish. Even after the deal this week had a chance to catch up. Nelson Figueroa best in why earlier tonight, we'll have
