"Out in the outfield. And so our coaches were telling us you know you guys need to drink more water and hydrate drink gatorade and all that stuff because it's hot out here and they thought that somebody got dehydrated when he had a concussion because he got knocked knocked out in a stairwell like that's the best venue for that but that kind of thing happened. You know. we're more aware now. And i think our kids in my kids. Their generation are more aware of. What's right and wrong. Looks like you know nothing. Nothing that happened in high school was militias for from us but there was a lot of stupid and and our our kids are not as stupid and they're not as reckless and and you know like fast times with ridgemont high fast times at ridgemont. High came out when i was in high school. That looked a lot like my high school. You know that wasn't like we laughed at it because there was truth in it and and now those things are so re they look so ridiculous that you know kids wouldn't be able to relate to it. Yeah which is a good point. We expect kids to be perfect and not make mistakes and because of that they are better at it but it also we are meaner to them when they make mistakes. Now it's like mistakes are kind of a thing that we try to all avoid all the time instead of treating them like. Hey you make a mistake so you can learn the lesson so that you don't make the mistake again. That's zero tolerance. Zero tolerance doesn't work. It's not right or anything i am. I learned that was when i got into sports and had to do something about domestic violence. And i'll tell you. I've learned more about a our judicial system. Our court of appeals are The way that we handle issues like from working in sports than i probably ever would have learned elsewhere. Because it's an important topic so you want to know about it before you talk about it but the concept of a no tall zero-tolerance being a counter intuitive like it doesn't actually help and it makes things worse for the people that were supposed to be trying to help in that situation right. I think that's right and the hardest part is when you're a parent of trying to You know. I think when i came out of high school when i was in high school going to like the way you kind of found out. What your limits were were to exceed your limit and you know that's probably specific to drinking a little bit but when you how do you know what your limits are drinking if you don't exceed on how you're not supposed to eat two boxes of cinnamon toast crunch if you don't at one point. Eat two boxes of cinnamon toast crunch in one sitting or thin mint girl scout cookies with shriver was ought to be rationed by the government legal. It should be story. Yeah those who shouldn't should not be sold in bulk to to addicts like made that girls. They say no to anyway. It's like the whole thing is just very predatory almost. I don't need you coming over here being trying to get my money and trying to give me delicious cookies. It's just not fair. there's no way to say all right. I feel like. I've kept you long enough but i still feel like i'm going to look back at this yet. Seven million questions. Ask him but you didn't ask him. The point of all of this is your very cool guy. And i appreciate having your voice in the media because i feel like you know you say what you think. You're you hold yourself accountable for what you say. And i appreciate that very very much. Well that's nice to say. And i think i think you know how big of an admirer i am yours because i told you that a long time ago but You're you're not only a star in the business. I think people can see what you're heart is like Through your work and that is that's unique. You don't see that very often. And when i said that is unique i use unique correctly because my wife. My wife is a Some sort of grammar nazi and when when people if you want to piss her off very unique or or that's the most unique thing i've ever seen anything has the same issue of like you can't be more unique. Look she kills me on that one. And i'll get texts from my friends that say. Oh i just said very unique on the air apologized to wendy yourself I love finding those out because now all notice it. When i do it and i can fix it but if you heard it here first folks. He said that i'm the most unique person in a very very unique jubilee. Jay bilas literally. Which by the way we read and we love them like this one that travis put into a document a week ago for me because he cares from carl that says quote. I was really disappointed. When ashley left. Well i mean. I feel like karl not to interrupt but we do have to specify like leave the disappointment. I think i think what karl means. Isn't he's not disappointed in ashley. Just wanna make sure. That's important that everybody knows i was really disappointed. Ashley left the new sports. Sports christina is a pleasant addition to the team. Katie nolan is awesome as always. Thanks and super. Relatable travis is also relatable but in more of a is that what i sound like for travis consider using a crop screenshot or the snipping tool to copy the podcast reviews into the pod duck. I agree carl. i like that. You're out here pan. Compliments you know being generous and also just sharing things. You think actionable steps tell you. He didn't listen. Because it's typed. it's typed right here in the dock so either didn't understand what you meant or heating care. He's no do it his way. And now i know travis it could fifty fifty there. It could go either way. It's a real jump ball Lastly don't forget that you can always leave a voicemail at eight six. Oh five oh six five five seven one say goodbye travis. Say goodbye christina. They're saying it. Spiritually jay bilas is saying goodbye well by love you mean it..

"A long time and so i put that thing out there and immediately both my kids like you are in no position to lecture anyone on on syntax or being able to pronounce things and and then i got started getting the geico commercial and all the things i i i didn't know new tele was Was pronounced new tele. When i first saw and i call it nutella and they were bad. That's not that bad bad but we argue. Don't call it in a tele arguing for as long as it wasn't nut ella. That would be weird. That's the only way to pronounce that. But not like it's not. It's not made from hazelnuts. Why am i. Why am i the dumb ass. I'm not jerk here. That's that makes sense. What what are your kids. Like what are they into. What a what have you learned from them. Because i feel like that's the thing non parents don't realize you a lot from your kids. My kids are awesome. And they're awesome because my wife is awesome but my my daughter's twenty six She went She's an artist so her whole life like when she was a little girl she was afraid she was like the most timid afraid kid and she was like afraid of the vacuum cleaner. She's afraid of other people should freight dogs and we thought she got a developmental disorder. She ever going to be able to go out in public and Would only eat certain things. And you know she's turned out to be this foodie worldly and she's a competitive horse rider in the hunter jumper realm. What she's yeah she's a she rides one hundred jumper and she's ridden horses her whole life and And love it. Like i don't i and i. I think i love basketball. But i don't love anything. Like she loves orces and and then she's also ridiculously talented artists. My wife's said professional artist. And then my daughter when when she was really little. My wife would bring like crayon drawing. She did at school and she'd show this to me and she showed it to me and i'd go. Oh that's that's right and handed back to her while watch basketball game or something and she would go. she's five. you realize what this is the go. no i know i had. Who is this a advanced. I don't i'm not an art prospector. So when she was about. I'd say the ten eleven twelve range you could and she still does this at a much higher level. You could give her a photograph and she could give you a pencil. Drying that was identical to the programming and fascinated by that talent. I do not have even a dash of it. It's crazy and now you know she paints and she's she's very talented sells a lot of it sold the while she was in college. And that's i've used her as an example of like she made money in college in the world's known sacks it's not that big a deal and then my son was a typical boy growing up And just followed assist around wanted to play every sport And and you know went to wake forest and he was a a walk on basketball player at wake and now works for the nba Working on their junior. Mba program did sound digital media side. And you know you. You asked what i learned from my kids like so my daughter You kind of learn About what what healthy passion looks like like. She doesn't do anything that she doesn't like. She doesn't think she doesn't to do. I don't wanna make sound that way. But she's not interested as much in what you think of what she does. She wants to be fulfilled in what she does and so she's willing to take the the path let's travel because it makes her happy and and you know i'd i'd never had that and i think i've got it now but i didn't have that when i was her age and i didn't make decisions the way she makes decisions and then my son is the most Ease the ease. The lowest maintenance kid that i've ever ever met let alone you know. Have the honor to be parent I'll tell you this story. He probably kick my ass eleven. So you know we never really. You never really ask for anything. So he's never he's never asked for you know. You always say christmas coming up birthday. Hey what do you want like good. I don't really need anything so we didn't ask you what you need. What you want. God every parent. I've gotten that he's never done that but he's never asked for anything. So we We kind of kept on him. Saying all right listen dude you gotta you gotta do this. Gotta tell us what you want. And he says well there's shoes. I like as nike shoes. So he tells his mom. Here's what it is and center kind of a screenshot of it or whatever and so my wife says to me one night were were at home and we just had dinner and she's on the internet she says j. a. I looked at the shoes. Anthony watts and And i was about to order. She goes there six hundred dollars. And i was like wendy mercedes. Wendy wendy you bought we bought tori a horse Jazz a horse and he like how much for. How much do those go for. More than six hundred yeah. I figured they eat six hundred adele. My god quite. It's not quite that much but but but you know what katie like. We always joke about how much the horse cost. But it is something bad that my daughter would be a different person without any kind. You look if your daughter's horse girl and you can afford to get her a horse you get her a horse. Yeah just pure joy. And i'm not sure that it would have caught that. It costs that much more than if she were a you basketball player. We sent her all over the country playing only tournaments that these these players plan. And so like you know and and i used to play. I used after dry on occasion very often used after driver her barn and it would be would be a pretty good hall. At least i considered it. And i wanted to my wife about. I was going to go do this. You know and my wife would say it's the barn or the mall. You choose not to go. i'll drive. i get you know that it kept her. It was a healthy activity for her that she loved and it also was a diversion from something that we felt like might not have been as positive of of an influence on her so It was like your your deer point. It's a it's privileged way to look at things because we had the means to do it but but i wouldn't change it Because of of how much it has meant to her and and how much how beautiful it is. It's really you go watch compete. And she wants to win and all that but she never like every once in a while. That horse will put her off. You know it'll come up to jump that the horse doesn't feel comfortable with and it'll just stop at. She'll fly and and she she gets up and the first thing she wants to do is make the horse feel better about it and you know it's not the horses fault. That was my fault. I took that turn to quick and stuff like that and It's really really it's a. It's been a wonderful experience to watch it. You mean you have to have real empathy to work with an animal on a team sport because it's an individual sport if you're looking at humans but you need the horse to cooperate and so you know to have to compete with something that you can't communicate with i can imagine is very very difficult so anyone who can do it. I'd endless respect for your daughter. Sounds like a cool kid. So does your son. He sounds a little a little expensive taste but he sounds like a cool. Were they good shoes. At least you remember what they were legit. They were legit. I wanted to pair after outside but But but that's the thing like you know. That was the only a that that sort of the kind of my point about this so the only time like he gets screwed because the only time he's ever ask for anything. Yeah we know exactly like what it is and how much you know instead of like. You know if he were higher maintenance we wouldn't think it was that big of a deal but but he he's taught me about You know he he's. He's accepted rolls really well like when he went to college. His decision was. Do i go to a smaller school where i can really play where where i'm good enough to play or do i go where i really wanna go but i may not. I may not play. I'll be a walk on. That doesn't get in the game that often. Any wound up. Being captain of the team is senior year and Sorta he persevered like is really cool to watch for dad. Yeah i can't imagine especially in something that's so near and dear to your heart. Are you a sneaker guy. I never see your. Oh yeah yeah. I'm a huge sneaker head where it lamad you have. Would you guess right now. It's in the hundred rain. She's but i've gotten rid of hundreds over the years and I don't know where that comes from..

"They don't care. And and i'm not sure they should. They wouldn't care if the players got paid. They argued over the stipend. Now everybody's getting it. nobody even notices. Nobody cares They don't care what the players are paid where they fly private or what they eat. They just want their games. Yeah and the discussion of it to them then sounds like we're trying to take away their games. Anybody who's advocating for change their like. Let's just keep it how it is and i feel like the nc double a. Like most leagues. Do i think even teams on a smaller scale take advantage of that they kind of use the the public's want for ignorance than want for like just gimme my games and they kind of it just feels like i don't know it just feels like this. All is so obvious. Like when i hear somebody say Don't they don't get paid. They get an edge of free education at a at a nice school. But they don't i. I mean i know college athletes. Who didn't it couldn't go to class sometimes. Didn't have to go to class or they leave after a year and it's like well then they didn't get full college education because the classes i took freshman year if those are all i took i. You don't call that a college education for a reason so it's just like why do we keep. How long are we gonna keep letting them get away with these excuses. That don't make a lot of sense forever until until it's done on the legislative side of the judicial side so let's go government and do it. They're doing it and but most of its self interest there. Yeah the states have self interest. But i'm i'm honestly katie. I'm really surprised that so many states and in the united states congress is that interested in this. Because the truth. I thought that they'd want to stay out of this. Because it might alienate. there should be constituencies. Or if might they might feel that. They're they're states. Institutions might be disadvantaged in some way but it it's become a so they see it. I think as a civil rights issue and and it's really hard to ignore and i think the argument the oral argument. They had a week ago. Ten days ago before the us supreme court Longtime it's a fool's errand to try to. It's easier to predict the the bracket in the tournament then predict what the supreme court's gonna do argument. I mine was better than yours. Yours was better than mine. Yeah find although you're welcome for all the help you did. Motivate me to fill one out. I wouldn't have done it otherwise. So thank you actually but but you know longtime observers of the court are not sports. People said That that they didn't feel it went well for for the day. And in some of the justices said Echoed exactly what we're talking about and when that happens before the highest court in the land that's really concerning sort of for the nc double a.'s. Position i think and the status of their position going forward Well fingers crossed. I mean not to hope. For someone's demise i feel like this an organization that's been around this long so comes into kids lives at a very pivotal time. I feel like they have a lot of control. And they don't feel as much responsibility as i wish they did. And you're right. The policy is separate from people. But i wish the people who felt that responsibility would step up. Okay more jay. Bilas in a second. But i i have to tell you guys. Today's podcast is brought to you by flame bearers Flame bears is a podcast championing. The women seeking to compete in the twenty twenty one tokyo summer olympics and paralympics chairs. Their incredible often unheard stories as they liked the way for women around the world celebrate women athletes. Who don't receive media attention. they deserve. I mean this podcast has been going on and on about that. Have we not. It's problematic because representation matters. A lack of representation makes it near impossible for younger girls to see their future selves than someone who doesn't exist today we all remember being kids and wanting to look up to someone. Sure sometimes you can look up to somebody who doesn't look like you but embodies the values that you have but the younger you are the more you can see people that look like you doing stuff that you want to do the easier. It is for you to picture into work towards that goal One of the episodes feature someone you might have heard of becky sauerbrun and her husband. They chat about her experience as a female athlete and the fight for equal play. We all need hope and inspiration now more than ever. I assume that's why you guys keep telling me to watch ted lasso and i'm not gonna do it yet and have my reasons and please stop bullying me. Learn a lessons in grit ambition from elite athletes. Who happened to be female. Listen aflame bears on apple podcasts. Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. All right back to jay bilas who is not a woman. Hey more with. Jane a second but first today's podcast is also brought to you by better help. Twenty twenty was interesting so let's do a mental health. Check in. how are you really. And what do you need right now. Therapy can help. What is therapy exactly. I mean you should..

"And then there have been a ton of administrators eighties and the like that are retiring now. Basically saying you know what not on my watch you guys deal with it and that's fine But but my thing is if i if they're really saying that i'm like then you should go. That's fine. you should go and there is in the back of my mind at. Don't let the door hit you on the way out and thing there when somebody says something like that but but that's within their progress like if they want to quit quit but but my thing is you know. It's funny. the game change. Like i was in college when the the last time the incident was before the supreme court and that was a case called It was called the border regions case and really what it was about were Schools were suing the nc double a. Because the nc double a. was telling schools and mandating when you could be on television and there the idea was you need to be on television sparingly. So that that we don't over saturate the market with the product and people will still go to the games. The idea was if we have all these games on television people. Stop going to the games. And we'll lose all his ticket revenue and it was profoundly stupid to look at it that way but the schools sued and they won and then then television money exploded so i didn't hear any coaches and administrators at the time saying. Hey we got a lot more money. Now which means we're paying ourselves a lot more money. This isn't the way it was supposed to be. So i'm out you know so all the all the ones that are saying now and it's really kind of funny bell say we didn't. We didn't get into this for the money. We got into this because we love the relationships as relationships or money are mutually close. But they didn't turn down the money either right. And and the implication the implication is the rest of us have gotten into it for money. And that's just not true. You know they they've proven those guys that are complaining about this have proven that you can. You can make a ton of money love your job and have great relationships with people while you make a ton of money and that's all the players are asking. Yeah and like on that same point. I remember daboh saying like i. If college athletes were paid he would retire. Because there's too much entitlement in this world. And i was just like what is what people feel entitled to be compensated for what you're entitled. How do you not see that. The unpaid amateur student is the entitled one. And but that's the system you know they. They talk like so when you see coach be rating player on the sidelines. football basketball. Whatever it may be. You'll hear coaches say well. They're just holding him accountable. Like does that mean. What does it what does that. What does accountability mean there and what what happened to the bench was the greatest motivator like then take the guy out you know so i don't that's just you know it's an excuse for bad behavior and that's not essentially what accountability means to me. But but you know look people say a lot of different things in in davos point. I get it. I don't think with all the changes. You're going to see him. Walk away from a ten million dollar your contractors. Not gonna do that but if he wants to. That's great yeah. He didn't even get into it for the money by. It's all that's all great. But i just don't see the problem you know nobody's telling A non athlete student on scholarship in there more non athlete students on scholarship athletes. Nobody's telling them. Hey you entitled you know little thing You shouldn't be able to earn or accept whatever you want the marketplace because you're getting paid now to justify a student without any obligation other than that remain enroll and but yet we say to an athlete that you're entitled that I love this one. They'll say to athletes You know you should be grateful because you're flying around on private planes You get the best. Coaching you get the best facilities you get the best food as if the coaches fly to the games on commuter right right and they're staying in different hotels and they don't you know they're eating sack lunches while the players are big fat. None of that's true it just none of it makes any sense and it kinda gets kinda gets That the the excuses and rationalizations for why players remain Sort of restricted. When no one else's it gets it gets tiresome but you have to deal with that because now you're trying to at least i am. You're trying to convince people know. Think of it this way you just trying to. Here's an example. Like i don't know how many years ago was an. Nfl officials were fighting the league for their intentions. Some other things. And i think they got locked out is either a walkout or lockout. But let's say they got locked out. They left out because we had replacement rest for a couple of games. We had replacement refs so when when they're replacement refs. I'm sitting here is an nfl fan. Gone oh my god. Get the referees. Back this sucks. And then so when they finally settled at the truth is i didn't really care whether the referee's got what they wanted or whether everything was fair and just i had football back and i was a consumer of football so i don't blame fans for not being in the weeds on this stuff because all they wanted their damn games like they want to watch their team play. They don't they don't most of the time they don't want to deal with this but when we are talking about it on the radio. Tv they get really invested in it and they get they got a. They got pretty Up to you know angered about it. And that's that's fine because i like the passionate Discussion of it but the truth is the overwhelming majority of time. They don't care. And and i'm not sure they should. They wouldn't care if the players got paid. They argued over the stipend. Now everybody's getting it. nobody even notices. Nobody cares.

"Nothing to do with the amount of revenue that's generated it has to do with systemic injustice on the gender side within the structure. And and so like to your to your point. Do we have to just chip away at this or can't we just say look. This is ridiculously unfair for a nonprofit. That says it's about gender equity to have these sort of systemic problems. We don't we shouldn't have to wait a long period of time to fix us. We should fix this now. It should never have happened in the first class And i kind of feel that way about You know athlete rights. They're not asking for any more rights than any other student as they're just asking for the same rights and and you know. I don't think it's not difficult. It's just hard for people in power to give up that power and give up that you know. They feel like they're giving up money even though they're not and why why the nc double a. couldn't step forward after those those Differences were shown in the tournament. Say we got it. That's that this is wrong and this is like the president step on this is on me. I'm in charge here. And i'm the one that put everybody in charge of their respective responsibilities and ultimately as my responsibility i don't ever feel that from them. They do. I mean they fixed it and they fixed it quickly enough that it was like so you just. You could have done that and you didn't do it in the i league. They had the weight room that we all saw fixed within a few days. I want to say and it's like well if you could fix that quickly You should've started that way baby. Can somebody come tell us what happened. Just now like make a statement of some sort that provides clarity. And i just feel like they say no. Because they don't have do well. Yeah and and the reason was that those are two separate things like they have someone that's in charge of both tournaments so there's an executive vice president in charge of both tournaments but it's clear that the overwhelming majority of time and resources are spent on the men's tournament. Now in one in one instance. I kinda get that because that's the gigantic revenue generator overall bite. But when you're talking about putting on two equivalent events what you order for one you should be ordering for the other. It shouldn't be that difficult. And what you will see. Is the weight room. Issue was just one small part of it. That was the most that was obvious Because the athletes complained about it and put it out on social media. The you know the amount of money spent on each tournament staggering the difference and it's not just because there there are savings involved in the women's tournament because the first first and second rounds are played on homesites They they might save a few bucks that way. But but the inequities are extreme. And there's not a whole lot of explanation for it other than we just didn't care enough to do it and and that's a problem that's a problem in of itself and to me. I don't see how that's so difficult that we can't say You know in in in the college space that we can't say hey if we're putting on a men's tournament degree it should be matched by what we do for the women's tournament and it is not good enough to say well. The swag bags may be different but they're equivalent value. They were equivalent value. No they weren't and the food was not equivalent and the floors that they use were not equivalent. And there's there's more room for growth in the women's game it's exploded in growth and were either committed to it or not and it's pretty clear we're not committed it also seems like we are comfortable. Invoking revenue generation when it talks it when we talk about it like that. But we can't say that the men are generating more revenue and therefore well they shouldn't they be paid like it's this weird thing where it feels like the solutions to these problems are are kind of obvious but someone's afraid to take that leap like name image and likeness female athletes. We'll be able to benefit from that greatly every female athlete every wnba player. That i've met. I walk away from it and i'm like that is an impressive person that like i want to root for and so being able to you know get out there and tell people who they are will make people more interested in watching them but i worry that the system is not going to support that they might almost stifle it like it annoys me here college coaches retiring and they're being like us air of like yeah. They're leaving because they're not excited about the changes coming to the sport like name image and likeness and. I wonder if as a person who has been a college athlete a coach. You've coached anna broadcaster. Like does it make you particularly angry when you see college. That don't seem to be advocating for the athletes as much as it feels like. They should know not angry. I just. There's a logic gap i think in in some thinking out there and i get it because it's always been that way so we have had a lot of coaches and not a lot but there have been a number of coaches that have retired at have used sort of the changing landscape of the game. The transfer portal athlete rights. All these different things by saying you know. I don't know that. I wanna do this anymore..

"Hello peanuts welcome to sports. The podcast that end with a question mark but has a lot of questions. I haven't changed the intro for thursday podcasts yet. That's my bad but it is thursday on katie nolan. That means i have the guest in today's guests very excited slash kind of nervous about ladies and gentlemen. It's jay bilas. Hi j katie. The sound of one hand clapping. I'm so excited to have you here. I was just explaining to you in a very quick way with the point of this whole thing is it's that i've met a lot of cool people in this industry Some of surprised me with how down to earth. They are oral. Be honest the fact that they even know who. I am And you are one of those people. And i wanna introduce those people to my audience and be like jay bilas essentially is a real one. I think is kind of the point But we don't know each other that well you've just been really nice to me as somebody who you worked on the more sports side of the industry and i'm more kind of tangential. I guess i would say. I wouldn't have expected you to have any idea who i am but you you do somehow and you're very nice to me and so i guess first question is thanks and why well the one. I don't know that. I have been that's nice to hear i guess But you're a colleague of mine a valued one and you're somebody in the industry. I knew before you came to espn and all thought you're not only really talented but really genuine and that comes across with you on the air. I mean sometimes like i think you noted that you don't always know who you're listening to or watching But you can get a feeling for people and and you give you give a very clear feeling about who you are and how trustworthy you are and how you know what a nice person so. That's really nice. That's all this is. I just want you to complement me for. We should also know. It is what april seventh which means you just ended the busiest time of your do you get to chill now or is that just like a mess. You know you absolutely get the little bit but the nba draft coming up on next so you kind of dive into that. There's always stuff to do but it's certainly less travel right now and kind of more You know you have more family obligations that you can attend to instead of saying. Hey i gotta know. I have to be somewhere else this year. I was home more because of the pandemic obviously and it's funny when i left for the acc tournament I told my wife. I'm going to be gone because i had to go after the acc tournament i had to go up to espn in connecticut for several days for selection sunday. And all that so. I told my wife i'm going to be gone for nine straight days. So and she said well you said that last year and your back in two days a year so she's kinda look at the time time time with me out of the house. I know i mean at this point. I think a lot of people can relate to that of the like yay yell. Miss you blah blah blah. But you can go. it's okay. What was that like for you last year. I know i remember. I was in the grocery store Buying groceries for the first time in forever. Because i figured we might be locking down pretty soon when i got the notification that the tournament was not happening. What was that day like for you and then what did what did that do. Obviously what effect that has on your year. Well it was similar to everybody else but it was a little bit different in that. I i have a really good friend. Who's a physician and despite the of mine reached out to me probably ten days. It may be early march. I'd say march first and said listen Just friend you need stink. Think about not flying anymore for the rest of the year and has what and he said. This is pretty a serious and and this is going to change our lives and you need. You need to really consider that. And had one more game day to do at dayton and then And then we're going to go to greensburg for the tournament so i flew that one more time to date. And then he started sending me all these things to read about About not only the virus but out you know the the fact that it was going to be declared a pandemic pretty soon in what that meant and then what. That was the first time. I'd ever heard flattening the curve so i was reading all these articles on it before i got to the acc tournament. And so i was pretty well versed on what was happening at least more so than i would have been otherwise. Thanks to this buddy of mine and then the wednesday. It was the the morning that rudy gobert tested positive. I was standing out in front of the hotel with dan. showman my broadcast partner. Who's from canada and he had just come from toronto and had said while we're standing waiting for ride had said you know you you guys in the united states are not taking this as seriously as you need to and i i i remember that hit me like a ton of bricks and when the the next morning or that day the world health organization declared it a pandemic and i thought that was a far bigger deal than the rudy gobert positive thing that was just sports coming to grips with the reality that the rest of the world was kinda dealing with before sports. Got a clue honestly. We were the last like the sports world was the last to get it. Yeah they they cancelled all these events all over the country Colleges had shut down already in their sports teams. We're still plan. I mean that was such a disconnect So when i when i went home i wasn't sure whether it's gonna be two weeks or a month or whatever but i i knew that that when i went home After the probably march twelfth. I went home that night After work in the whole day sorta on the cancellation side. And i knew. I wasn't going to leave my house for quite a while and it ended up being when. How long was it before you went back. Went to work but before you went back to two into the world because for me. It's like i i've just started to go. I haven't had to leave. Some people could still do remote and stuff but most of your job involves traveling. When did you have to start doing that again. It was a long time until basketball. Season started again My wife and i cancelled everything we were planning on doing that summer. We stayed home the whole summer. Our family our kids came home. We have older kids So they were out in the working world. They came as to stay with us during that whole period so there was some positives to it. But i'm a in addition to my my job with espn. I'm i'm still technically. I'm a practicing lawyer up on the side folks just casually also a lawyer. But it's pretty casual. 'cause i might my. I'm still firm. I started with But my my title now is of counsel which is a nice way of saying. I don't do anything of real value anymore. But i used to go into my office every single day that i was in town. If i was in town. I'd go into my office. I get some stuff done. I might leave early. But i would. I went in. I haven't been in my office in a year. Because there's there's no reason for me to go in you know the the the lawyers that are huffing. You know kind of day to day in our firm. They only go in Every other week and we have shifts of how we do. Thanks so now that i'm you know. We're getting into vaccination period. I'll start going back into my office. But i'm not i haven't been there in a year. Which is of hard to fathom really. Is it like are you a guy. I mean you work very hard. You have to very demanding jobs even though you say that you don't really lawyer are you a person who's always work work work work work and this year kind of a was it comfortable for you to take a year off. I guess is what i'm asking or was it shocking or did you learn anything in this like forced. Stop because for me. I've just worked worked worked in crazy different weird jobs that i didn't. I don't think. I anticipated how much just this abrupt halt would affect me. And then i've learned a lot and grown from it. I think that i stop shock for me. Everything was a shock for. May i mean..

"Am and florida the number five team in the country that follows us right at seven pm. James is up next good afternoon james. You're on the air our you. Oh paul yard today there's an alright. Excellent seasonally we got bad connection or something. But that's okay always got a bad connection. Oh i am pre-empting amanda if that's all right of course you mentioned talking with your last caller The tune reiki. Don't lose that number. You recall that. Steely dan exactly Here's here's how. I'm familiar with that. Most recently here in montgomery. And i don't live in montgomery but here in the river region in montgomery we have A little place called exchange and a couple of guys for all this stuff that we're going through now. I used to go in there. Larry and jimbo. A drummer keyboardist combination. Are you with me so far. Okay here's here's why this is pertinent. Jimbo is the keyboard player. Now this guy has got to be early sixties. He used to play is. If i'm not mistaken this is a little bit before my time and a ban called harmony in montgomery and he used to be the bass player. If i'm not sadly mistaken and one of the guitarist and singers was tommy shaw for sure. Okay and of course you both know that tommy shell left here and went to chicago to play with sticks so that's been Sometimes four years ago. Yeah but east. They're still out there but Just wanted to throw that out you Hogan having a good week. James thank you. They say you linguine totta. We're getting ready for the midnight special. Let's continue with ed. Wolfman you're right. Let's go to ed in south carolina. Probably a big midnight special fan back in the day afternoon pole. Hey there have you had your ears today over.
2021 College Basketball Bracketology With Jay Bilas
"Feels like you might be the busiest man in america right now. So thank you for making some time for me man. I appreciate it but busiest mannered. America's this is the best time of year. So i'm happy to be busy. Jay bilas is literally and figuratively towering. Figure in the world of college basketball so it is about nine forty five pm eastern on selection sunday. You've been on tv all day. I've seen you offering wisdom's. I've seen you gas bagging as you yourself from time and again i'm curious jay. How long does it take you to fill out your bracket while we have to do it in about two minutes one. We're on the air during this brattle. G selection show. So i it's sort of the the first thoughts that you have and and you wind up picking an upset or to In each region in the first couple of days. But then i wind up going pretty chalky after that and And then i'll i write an article called the more than five minute bracket where i think about it for more than a couple of minutes and And i don't do any better. So i'm not sure that my My first instincts aren't are just as good well. I'm glad to get you somewhere between the first and second drafts of history. Because i'm staring at an empty bracket you have hastily filled out yours and i want to get into this because we have the top four seeds gonzaga baylor illinois michigan their top lining the four geographic regions jay. That aren't really geographic regions this year. Because everybody's gonna be crammed into indianapolis in something that feels bubble like is there one team among those four top seeds. That seems feels the most vulnerable to you. Yeah michigan Because of isaiah livers You don't know what this stress reaction and his foot whether he's gonna play and if he does play whether he's going to be the same. I mean machines a good team without him but they're elite offensively with him Because of how skilled he is He's a good passer. Good cutter good square. He's a terrific scorer but without him I think there are a lot more beatable if you will And they have a different. I i do think they have somewhat of a difficult path. alabama is the to in their region and And i think alabama has got a very good chance to to reach a final four What's what's the best thing. I think bobby for the the big ten teams as they're out of the big ten now and they don't have to they don't have to beat each other up and they can go take a swing at somebody else. And i think they're all gonna like that. So i wanna get into the alabama thing. You just mentioned it. They're sitting right below michigan as the two seed and jay. I'm still staggered by. I guess the following collection of words second-seeded alabama versus fifteen seeded. Rick pitino and iona. So let's take the first half of that matchup. I people know alabama obviously as a football institution the football institution. What they know about their basketball team. Yeah alabama is is really talented and really good This year in basketball. Their coach nate. Oats is a math guy. He is an analytic sky. So last year they shot ton of threes. He believes in free throws open threes and layups and And so they're not a lot of mid range shots taken But this year. They're they're excellent defensively. That may be the best part of their team is. They can really guard their long armed and athletic on the wings. They've got a player named herbert jones. who has always been a really good defender. He's six eight He's really kind of a point guard at six eight and he does everything. He's kind of a triple double type player and defensive player of the year. In the league in the sec. And the player of the year in the league And i think he makes them different. So they're legit. They could have been a one seed worthy of it but because of how good baylor gonzaga have been they were they were locks and then And then how. How good michigan wound up being and then illinois. I don't think anybody would argue with those four is number one seeds but alabama was the clear Fifth overall so the other

"For now. You're listening to the paul. Finebaum show podcast. Richard is in mississippi richard. Thanks and good afternoon. Good afternoon paul. Such wanna make a comment not really have a question but you know about the coach that called in and said the things that he said. I think he just really shined a light a lot. We all kind of know that going regardless of his reasons for doing it whether he was bruised from his forty year. You know college career. I really believe irrelevant. And the The guests that you had on just prior to to this call kinda said the same thing when he talked about the ncaa tournament when he said that the he thought the tournament would go on regardless of anything. I think it's just it really puts the ncaa on a bad light. Her body would just take a look at it and say what is it done to college. Sports this close to a professional game is ever gonna be without a professional game. I just kind of half feel about. Richard and i talked. I thought jay also was very honest and he said why. Am i doing this because of money. And i i must admit this program here has been on the on the on the air every day since the pandemic we had to. We had some issues the first week or two because of everybody was sent home but the bottom line is we all or most of us are in business college. Athletics is a business. It's a huge business and it was important to get the college football season in and with jay said is even more interesting and i don't know whether this is the best topic to discuss or not but but college basketball isn't a sport. It's television industry. It's television inventory just like football. Everybody has these billion dollar contracts. And if you don't play the games The money doesn't change hands so it's just like if you own a convenience store it needs to be open to to make money and if people can't leave their house and you're not going to do very well just like everybody else right now so i mean these are obvious things but the only thing that i think irritates jay and others is that the the ncwa try. This is all about academics. it's not it's about. It's about filling the coffers of these universities. So they can move some money over for other causes to help pay the bills. It's absolutely a business. But yeah i would be willing to bet if men and i'm not that a lot of the coaches if they if they would get on television or radio programs such as yours and say they could say the same thing that he said. They're just not going to. Do you know going to be correct when they get on there but then they turn around and we all know what's going on. I played a little college baseball back in the early eighties. You and i are about the same age. I'm i'm a little bit younger than you. And the things that i witnessed way back then were uncomfortable to me. Then since been in business for about thirty where. I i just retired from business. Thirty one years in the stuff that goes on in businesses. What's going on in college athletics. And for the average guy like myself it. Just watch it for entertainment. Only i think that a lot of us are just. Don't want to hear about it. We don't want know richard early on in my career. I was a crusader. And i really believed that i was going to change the world by exposing various things. And i'm still a truth seeker. But i also have come to realize that you know we love these things. These are entertainment and to look under every rock. Sometimes i mean if it's if it's important but just look under them to look under them is futile. But i'm really glad to hear. Congratulations on moving on. I envy you got to have a good afternoon. Thanks sounds good some days. It does really sound good. Let's talk to mickey who was in kentucky. Hey maki go right ahead. Hey paul neither. Do you know the rules on mask for the coaches in basketball. Because i see them call team over and they pulled their mass down to talk to the team. I don't think they're supposed to do that. And in every let me let me offer this to you. Every time i try to alibis somebody doing that. My wife informs me that she wears a mask all day long at her office and there are no there are no well. Let me pull it down to communicate. Everybody communicates the same way with a mask on so the rules. Are you must wear your masks. But they're not doing it. No is there any penalty for not really the sec. Early on find certain coaches. I think jeremy pruitt received a big fine. And when i say rules these are guidelines. Easer these are this legislation that conferences put in to try to mandate the new world that we currently live in. it's arbitrary. And i think i think the the conferences and the schools let a lot. Go on and you know. That's that's their problem. I mean i can't tell them how. How and when to impose. But i i don't know i mean i think football mass were a little different than basketball i. I'm not sure they were as critical. I think inside when you're communicating with players. It's probably a little more important. Where mask than it would be at an open air football game. They they wear them until they call team over. No and a lot of them. Take them all by the way if you're not going to if you're going to if you're not going to wear the mask properly. There is literally no reason to where. I agree with that but again i got early. On in the pandemic was i was more involved in all that but My philosophy now is you can do whatever you want. And it's up to someone else to be the mask police. We will take a break. We appreciate you being on the program. More of your phone calls at eight five five two four two seven two eight five. We're coming right. You're listening to the paul finebaum. Show podcast.

"Basketball for espn giants. Great to have you on every every year is different. Every year is a challenge. I can only imagine what this year has been like for. Everyone including yourself well. It's probably been very similar to what it wasn't football although we just have more games so we're on the road a lot more and i think it's been a challenge for every team one trying to stay positive and test negative as kansas bill. Self likes to say but also you just don't know what's going to happen in the next. You know the next day let alone the next week and we're already hearing talk. Paul about will teams playing their conference tournaments because it may compromise their ability to play in the incidentally tournament. Amine it's amazing how the narrative changes week-to-week as to what what everybody wants what's important in. Let's start there because that is. That is a big topic. There's plenty other topics to discuss. But what what do you hear from your your friends and colleagues and obviously people who will be making tough choices. Well based upon the incident as protocols for the ncaa tournament which is gonna take place entirely in indianapolis or except for the first four. The first four games are going to be played at purdue and indiana but that it's entirely in indianapolis every team eligible for the tournament. Selected is going to have to have all of their tier one participants. Their travel party test negative for seven straight days leading into the tournament. So that's given a lot of people a lot of a lot of pause. They're thinking well what happens if our our conference tournament. We're taking a risk for the ncaa tournament. We plan a conference tournament. One of our tier one Travel party test positive. So there's a lot of talk about well. Should we even play in our conference tournament especially for the best teams in it kind of goes against their narrative wide. Play in the first place which was hey the players wanna play and competitors want to compete these guys want compete and look at goes to money too because there's a lot of money riding on these conference tournaments not only for the conference but they have deals in place with companies like us and all these meteorites companies and they oh inventory frankly and so Also if you decide not to play you are opening up an avenue for a team that otherwise wouldn't make the tournament to make it and that's gonna knock out somebody else so there are repercussions to not playing and i'm not sure like how do competitors say. Well i'm not gonna play. I don't want to compete here. I'm going to compete in something else. I don't know it's an odd position to be in and that's not what we said at the beginning. We're going to do it. It's either safe enough the player it's not and and that's kind of the where i stand. I say hey. If you're conference is holding the tournament then you should play and if you're not playing you have an obligation to the rest of your conference that you should play. And you have an obligation to the game and a responsibility the game to play. I don't i don't find this opting out thing you know. This is not some game you know. There's a lot different. This is for a chance to get you know if if if teams were saying well. I don't wanna play in. My opponent has chance to get into the college football playoff. You'd hear some screaming about and it's a similar thing here. Yeah i remember. We had here a couple of months ago. Talking to john cale appearing. You've heard him talk about it as well j. And he was pleading the kids. The kids wanna play. We can't deny them that and now we're getting the other side speaking of cal. Let me let me start there. And there's a laundry list of the schools. I would like to ask you about but that's top of mind because on a program like this coming all the time. They've been fairly negative toward cow. I told the caller a minute ago. I would defer to you. What's happening up there. Why are they playing such an awkward season. Well their players aren't as good as they've been have highly rated recruiting class but the players haven't played to the level of their their talent or the the predictions of their talent like brennan. Boston has not played well and and really very few of their players have played. Well they brought. In a couple of transfers one of which damian mints was a transfer from creighton. And he's been he's been good but they just haven't been great they don't shoot the ball well. They're not a tough group together so they don't get they don't get stops when they should turn the ball over. There's not a very good basketball team. But i don't think it's necessarily like you can blame calipari for not recruiting the type of team that he should have to be to be better than they are. But and that's fair but the idea that sort of the one and done is dead and that's not the way to go. you know. Nobody has won more than duke and kentucky over the last ten years caldera got there in two thousand ten both dukhan in In kentucky have consistently one in the ncaa tournament in the regular season as much as anyone. There are only a couple of programs that can say what we want a couple more games here there and and that's been gonzaga and and maybe kansas other than that. It's been it's been duke in kentucky. It it's just a question of of who they have. It's not like calipari forgotten how to do this. This is on the players but but what that indicates to me. Paul is the players deserve a heck of a lot more credit than they got in years past so people can blame calipari if they want to. He didn't deserve as much credit as he got in past years and doesn't deserve as much blame now. The players deserve way more credit before. And they deserve more blame. Now outing was against alabama. And i have to immediately head to nato ch team and you know you have a lot of friends in alabama you know. They're they're already talking in same terms about basketball. The they've always talked in football. Give us your insight into this team. And what it's capable of the rest of the way people in tuscaloosa calling him saint nate now with along with saint nick exactly alabama's alabama's really good and they play a great style because they get up and down the floor. They stretch the floor because they can shoot from just about every position so they do they do take and make a lot of threes. They make about eleven twelve game. Heck they had twenty three in that game against lsu which look more like a video game than a regular season college game and and they'll attack the rim so they do get foul to the free throw line but it's just a joy to watch them play in their way better defensively credit for and one of the big reasons. They're so good on defense. Is herb jones. He i think he should be talked about for. Sec player of the year. that's out valuable. I think he is not only to what alabama does but just how valuable. He is in general as a basketball player because he plays at both ends of the floor passes. He handles rebounds Scores he really does absolutely everything on the court. I think alabama is in the sort of on the second tier of a group of teams. That can not only make it to a final four but they can. They can sneak through and win it. I still think baylor the two best teams. But i think you gotta start talking about teams like alabama florida state. You know we've talked about Michigan and villanova those type of teams. By but i would put alabama up there with florida. State is sort of the new bloods That that are better than the blue bloods this year and then have an absolute chance to do something special. We get to the end jay. I do want to change gear. Change the conversation back to topic. We've had here so many times and and that's the future of college athletics. There's so many things happening. it's hard. It's hard to really get a.
John Thompson took a chance on hapless Georgetown ... then worked a miracle
"Jay Bilas here because there's big college basketball breaking news this morning the death of John Thompson Junior age of seventy eight, one, thousand, nine, hundred, four NCAA championship winner the first African. American. Coach to take team to the men's College Basketball Championship his best player is now Georgetown's coach his son John. Thompson the third eventually followed him as head coach as well with Craig there in the middle giant for what he did for Eric African Americans in a giant with what he did in the game. Jay joins us on the Shell Pennzoil performance line this morning Jay good morning for those that may be too young or don't understand the scope of what John Thompson Junior meant to college basketball. How would you sum it up? He was a giant in in basketball both literally and figuratively, and he did so much for the game not only on the x No side that you did a substantial amount there. You know his Georgetown Teams especially when you got nineteen, eighty, seventy, nine, eighty through the early nineties they were a force and the best defensive coaches in the history of the game, his teams were very disciplined. Very smart and very together and that that's why they were so great defensively, it wasn't just that they were athletic. they were smart and disciplined. And almost went to the final four in nineteen eighty when John lost a a one point game to Iowa and that was lute Olson's first final four and lute Olson passed away a little earlier last week But John, Thompson. was that he was also fought for social justice before it was it was cool if you will. Think. You'll remember back in the eighties there was legislation by the NC double called proposition forty two. That put in a entrance requirements and they were disproportionately affecting African Americans and John Thompson and a game I. Believe it was Boston College got up before the tip and walked off the floor and protest with a towel over his shoulder and and you know he took a stand and took a stand on on multiple issues He was not always popular because the things that he was saying that time was really uncomfortable for for people to hear. And you can imagine I mean are people are uncomfortable. Now think how it was back in the in the late Seventies. Early Eighties one John Thompson was was setting a standard and with standing up on social issues. He he was a, he was a a great great person a man of of really high character and You know you don't want it to get lost what a great coach was but he was also a great man.

"Make love and promises a poll question here. I was just talking to polly about Reggie. Bush Reggie Bush was on the heard yesterday and says he wants his heisman back. Do we know where Reggie Bush's heisman trophy? As paulie find out after Jay bill really wow I. mean may not. Because this is what I was told that they don't have tons of heisman. Just sitting around not like a car dealer where he's got a heisman role of heismans there. I'm thinking you get that heisman back. All I do is pop off the plate. That says Reggie Bush and I. Put on somebody else. Who Wins it now. Do you want me to wait for Your Answer Zach? Good? I can do it now. No Way I got Jay Bilas. Jay in a suit and tie and I got A. I don't know if he's got pants on there. Where are you right now j.? I am I'm at home actually and the. This isn't just a student visa my pajamas. You you get out of bed like that. That's just sort of. Handed more formal character. Like tearaway, suit and tie, I like that all right. Where do you stand on Reggie Bush now? I guess the ten years are up, so he's welcome back the disassociation they vacated that award. You think Reggie Bush should get his heisman trophy back. Well first of all, yes I, do but I don't I. Don't think they vacated I think. He gave voluntarily gave it back. And so he didn't voluntarily. Give it back. I think he did I think he gave it back to the Heisman, trust I don't think they stripped him of it. I think he gave it back, but but I may be wrong there, but but I will tell you that if I were in charge USC I would retire his number immediately and I would put the heisman that they have back in Heritage Hall and I would put his number back in Jersey back heritage hall where it was when this whole thing happened because. That whole thing was a travesty, and it's not a question of whether his family took Monday down. San Diego or whatever that was one of the most corrupt investigations the NC double A.'s ever gone through Paul de the. Former athletic director Miami was the chair of the commit. That was the harshest sanctions since SMU got the death penalty in one, thousand, nine, hundred, eighty, six, eighty seven something like that and a year later Miami was in the crosshairs of Paul Paul decide. Why didn't know anything about it? I mean it was the hypocrisy of the highest level I've never seen anything like that. I don't know if I reggie was stripped for. We were way too involved in this by the way. That's why I can tell you with firsthand knowledge, but they sent him. One of those prepaid crates to ship is heisman. They wanted it back. They stripped him of IT I. Don't know if the Heisman is going to give it back to him. They should I mean he wanted. And you know it's one of these things..

I look at that Chris. Cody is stunned for the first time in thirty years. His father has sounded clever. Chris cody is like who fed him that line. Hasley Birdie is the perfect joke. He has a new celebration by the way he takes a bite of a crooked afterwards. Did you notice that's right cutter. Today is the day officially end Miami in a statement the tour said that the Golfer damaged the dignity of a Golfer with etiquette violation and inappropriate behavior. I'm sorry the dignity of golf with etiquette violation relation and inappropriate behaviors. He's got to be their main draw right. I would never be able to do a talk. Show in Korea like I there would not be the freedom. I'm I'm complaining about America's sports repression. Can you speak Korean. I mean time now for Greg Cote. He's back in my day. Okay now in these Fanta take a trip down memory lane. Here's your Guy Greg Cody with back back in my day burgers bagging my day and even more recently. If you bought a burger fast food joint there was a near certainty. It was made a beef now. There's a growing likelihood up might be made of plants suitable vegans Burger. Your King sells its so-called impossible. Walk Walker. McDonald's is introduced. It's P. L. T. Burger plants lettuce tomato in Canada placing foods costco. KFC those are others are now selling or test marketing plant based meat replacements. It used to be guilt. Feelings were rarely attached to eating meat. Just as most of us don't know particularly care that it takes roughly three thousand cow hides the supply all of the football using a single NFL season but I don't want to get off track here or make this a moral issue about consuming animal meat. I won't make fun of your roasted sprouts with Tofu. If you don't pick me for eating a rabbi I say live and let live well except in the case of the the chicken. I just ate for lunch. I'm not anti Vegan. I know vegans. I respect those who don't wish to eat animal meat. Someone who actually believes in science I also get that beef production accounts for around fifteen percent of all greenhouse gas emissions. I think eating meatless plant based burgers perfectly fine as long as you understand that you're healthy the alternative likely as a chemistry lab explosion of Pea protein isolate expelled press oil amino acid cellulose from bamboo potato starch maltodextrin yeast extract salt gum Arabic beet juice and food coloring own apetite. Here's the one thing I don't get that I will make fun of wire. A plant based meat alternative burgers geared vegans made to look smell and even taste like beef burgers like you don't want anything to do with actually eating animals uh-huh okay with appearing to be eating beef that makes about as much sense as me giving up beer for water and then pouring water into a beer bottle drink from house this since let's they look smell in virtually taste like apparently nobody can tell the difference about. I just continue to unabashedly eat beef burgers and just tell you their plant based because the only plant plant I want associated with my burger is when I plant that Dan Disc Vive right in my gaping maw. I'm cody laws back in my day yea pro meeting small yeah. You've been very good today. He almost surprised why are we so surprised. uh-huh let's allow us to celebrate that yes we will. We will celebrate that in the next segment. Let's spend the next segment and celebrating how good because Greg Cody has really been. He really has been he's been great. He's been great got off to a rocky start with Jay Bilas but after that he has been unbelievable it is a fifty point game from Willie Burton. just you're you're. You're you're never you're never expecting it not to be repeated. I don't I'm genuinely baffled that I can say Chris. He's got three Hakeem Nicks lives. I don't think any of us have ever gotten three Akeem. Knicks lapse ascended day. It's because we waited too late in the show back in my day. I think that's a key keeps him around yeah. Oh Oh because he checks out right as soon as he gets to read his thing that he's written. He stops paying contention and goes back to eating croquettes like you're saying right now. If I talked to him he's chewing into the microphone right now. really good super good right. He is back there. Good that right. I think you're right. He was just chewing throughout about the entirety of when he finished with the back in my day and went right back into the obligatory cody sewer Patrick Chewing. Is there a free time for some at I can't believe Corey Brewer scored fifty one points one time here fifty one points still not a shocking as Willie Burton's. If you hear sound every time you stop your car it usually means you're new. You need new brakes. What are you doing to distract me. What what are you doing. I I just realized I was doing overtly. Give me a look and nobody's perfect go. The recycling allowed we will celebrate Greg. Cody's magical adjective day while we're talking about his magical day. He gets fourth team next lasts unbelievable. It's hard to pull off the chewing. You sound effect with a crooked as an end the necessary crunch. I wish you were doing that to be comedic funny. He's just chewing into the microphone on because he's done is back. In my day got a little bit of applause and now he checked out for that he will stick around though to hear himself lauded in the next segment he will we might be able to engage aged if we spend the entire segment speaking about him and how wonderfully go click on his column Greg Cody of the Miami Herald go click on his column. Give him his beloved click treat the Little Tree Click Click. It hasn't spent the entire show pooping on the carpet. which is my daily existence with him boy cody take a good boy donlevatar? Will you sometimes call your childhood telephone number. We all do we all do thank thank you yeah. The Greg was saying he does as well speaking of the microphone instead of that Thermos. You're drinking at a radio. We all do stugatz alright. I changed my mind. Mike do the rest of the.

"For all the latest headlines Information tune into the sportscenter on ESPN radio all throughout that Mike what do you think of that as a longtime admirers of Kanye West these line. He says crazy things is Kinda was. I don't know if you with the the program he's just promoting his album and then I don't know four years from now he'll drop. Another album is like laden with F. Words our we feeling in general about Connie's work recently man I the the videos from these like Sunday services looked pretty cool. The coachella thing was very artsy but I thought it was Kinda. Whack I I'm curious to know what this whole. Project is keeps pushing back and delaying. There's an Imax film that accompanies it. I'm sure the the concerts are great if he plays some of his older tracks if he doesn't eat tour this album album but I'll listen to anything he does and I'll buy in with any sort of concept that he has. It's just not forever. If you're interested in Music Dick you should watch a documentary style thing that showtime did call Shangri la about rick rubin and the genius behind on on US I've read. I've actually read a lot about this. He comes in sloppy man and Rick Rubin Fixes. Everybody up Rick Rubin as a as a producer Sir and the way that he does it is unusually spiritual in this setting where he's walking around barefoot and all they're doing doing his art creation. It's a it's an interesting look. If you're interested in music you're not going to be interested in it if you're not interested in music but if you know who Rick Rubin is and if you know what he does the genius is behind him and there have been very few like him in music you will find his process interesting. we have a defender now that has emerged defender. Uh of volunteers perfect. You did not hear a lot of that yesterday. You did not hear people defending volunteers perfect. He's been suspended for the year because he is a he repeated offender on being too violent for football. I want you to think about what I'm saying for a moment von Tez Burford and I'm not even sure that's a terrible thing to have on your resume. It'll cost you money. If if you want to be a gangster which is volunteers perfect is too hot for football perfect will not play by anyone's rules on contest. Perfect is someone that the violent sport of football can't have on the field with a whole bunch of other violent people because he is too violent. He's the most violent he does some things that are illegal and go against the image safety of the League and this is an easy one for them to take out a guy who makes for a very poor martyr in the name of safety but he now has a defender who's not as agent it is Bill Romanowski oh which is about the worst defender that you can have on this commander he he tells TMZ. You're in the heat of battle. Your mindset is killer be killed because the offensive lineman. They're still coming at you. You're in a war he tells TMZ and you're supposed to be able to be violent. Sometimes and other times you're supposed to be able to take your foot off the gas like that. That is hard and I feel for this guy. Do I think he should be fine. Yes I think it should be kicked out of the League. No I think it is absolutely dead wrong. This guy has handled himself like a pro and yes he is a violent m effort and I love the way he plays the game of football. I truly believe this. This guy's cleaned up his act from previous years when he was with Cincinnati and he's playing a cleaner brand of football but the hit from the other day that was a rough on to watch to me. He plays the game the way it's supposed post to be played. Did he take it too far. Yeah he took it too far and he's taking it too far. quite a few times my dealings with him nothing but a good guy guys probably the spark smartest football mind in the room. Now romanowski embrace that Raiders Football Style Romanowski was unapologetically not and billy I would like for you just a brief history of some of Bill Romanovskis resume the violence on bill romanovskis resume. I do remember famously the broken orbital title bone of a teammate and he's got a spitting incident. What do we have back there. Let's take a trip over to wikipedia and go over the altercation section of his paid. Ah Altercations Romanowski was involved in numerous altercations with both teammates and opponents in one thousand nine hundred five well with the eagles he was ejected from a game and subsequently it went fine four thousand five hundred dollars for kicking Arizona Cardinals fullback Larry Centers in the head two more incidents occurred during the nineteen ninety seven season while he played for the Broncos in the first he was fined twenty thousand dollars after helmet-to-helmet hit on then Carolina Panthers quarterback Kerry Collins in a preseason game resulting in collins sustaining a broken jaw in the second incident. Romanowski spat in the face of forty niners wide receiver J J stokes in a regular season game late in December on Monday night and responses. It's a stokes taunting two years later while he was still with the broncos he was fined a total of forty two thousand five hundred dollars for three legal hits plus a punch thrown at Kansas City chiefs chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez and also fined an undisclosed amount for throwing a football Brian Cox of the New York jets the ball hitting him in the crotch area Marcus as Williams careful with your time with your timing was a little dangerous. You got hit with the unfortunate name right there for the incident was involved. It was amazing Kalita comedic. You need to go sit in the penalty box. He's aware of ads and that is the wrong word that you just used with. What that that story was? You had your lime lined up and you weren't listening to the rest of one thousand at three. Romanowski attacked and injured one of his teammates Marcus Williams during a scrimmage Williams of backup tight end for the Oakland raiders was forced to retire after Romanowski confronted Williams after a play ripped off his helmet and crushed his Izhak it with a punch William sued for damages ages of three point four million dollars arguing the romance he had been suffering from road rage which is for a live here Romanowski at one point admitted to using steroids royds and human growth hormones. He was involved in the box situation and then there's a section about racism allegations and you know there's a lot of stuff in here. Thank you bill was pooped. Get analyzed yes he did he he would have his feces studied by laboratories and you also distilled his own water and took one hundred pills a day and he played the game the way it used to be played he played the game the way that he wanted to play it and of course he would endorse the playing hang style of one volunteers perfect. I'm surprised he at least acknowledged. That hit was a little bit uncomfortable. I've never heard Romanowski say that. I didn't even know he was capable of having thoughts like that. This isn't controversial but in January two thousand nine Romanowski threw his name into the search for Mike Shanahan's replacement is the head coach of the Denver Broncos Romanowski sent a thirty page powerpoint presentation and a team owner Pat Bowlen but was not considered for the job. I love to see that powerpoint presentation. I would love to see Romanowski as a coach like you know. Oh that he would be getting in those same sort of fights with referees like now he'd have to escalate it to fighting the old people who are as peers so it would be the other coaches his own players you ask idea for the XFL seriously. Oh Yeah I'd hire him that guy on your side Vons Hoof prowling your sidelines. I can't think of worse ally for perfect way through in terms of plain style in terms of someone who was famously a player who was totally out of control. Hey I got your back. He doesn't have any official head coaching experience but in two thousand eight he was the defensive coordinator for Piedmont High School so there you go. Thank you billy really that was an exhaustive exhaustive resume search on Bill Romanowski. I'm sure I love so. He's just got a section of his wikipedia. That is just altercations. It's it's not even controversies. It's just altercation altercations and then there's like subcategories like Marcus Williams incident racism allegations Valco. Oh yeah stuff like that. All the good stuff who else has that I mean it's tough to come up with a resume quite like Bill Romanowski also so. How many times have you win the championship? He won the championship several times four times but you want him on your team and furthermore many games. Did he miss because the reason he was doing. He was taking care of his body like that long before Tom. Brady was taking care of his body like that. Romanowski did not Romanowski played like that and never missed games. You can make the argument. The Romanovsky is as tough as anyone who has ever played that sound like a lot of money for those fines on the legal hits but it really wasn't for like three illegal hits. It's only forty two thousand dollars. Nowadays you get dinged up like fifty thousand dollars inflation and the NFL's alleged concern with making violence board save. Even though it's not possible they can't keep any of their damn quarterbacks healthy healthy in.

"After five years. This is either the last back in my day as a regular series or the first of a new phase in which back in my days are occasional not not every week so he has just announced officially his laziness stugatz. I WanNa make him an occasional theory once a week but I think more occasional I think every time you don't have a back in my day. You can't do the show I think Cheo okay. That's fine because I have a contract so if you WANNA pay me for not doing the show let's fire. We'll get paid for doing doing nothing we already do. That's a good that's a good one. I got no retort. VC's Donlevatar show with as to God's on ESPN radio so stu gods is a very good sport about being the punching bag around here he very frequently gets mad about much of anything but I snuck in during the Jay Bilas interview and very quickly stabbed him and he was very mad at me as that happened so I want you guys to listen to the sound and I'm maintaining that. Stu Gods is never expecting STU. Gods interview style for fifteen years says hey let me talk for a while. I don't care what you say. When do I get to talk to get at and so I don't think he was expecting he was lobbying to Jay. BILAS quick efficient question that got his voice on the interview and he wasn't prepared in any way for Jay bilas turning it back on him so this is how that went jay. Do you have any issues with it any issues with what with with the with the ruling in California has no idea what we're talking about the law as the law and also Greg Cody is sitting here because Greg Cody has his talking points on the NCAA STU Gods Scott what his talking points he's been against the payment of athletes forever and now all all of a sudden the California law has been passed now all of a sudden Greg Cody. What about the rest of the athletes now he's now he's very concerned for the rest of the athlete doesn't want to pay even though I explained to him in the first segment why it's great for all the athletes fend for yourselves the market it's a fend for yourself is they're. GonNa make money. That's fine. It's imperfect but it's it's less art. It's less imperfect than it used to be and so but greg cody was saying but he said it was a good question and I was like he's just being polite Greg because he tells you soon thereafter he tells you soon thereafter that your question has no relevance elephants my point is the vast majority of athletes are not in a position to take advantage of of this new law. what about them is is my point. I might the law broaden where every college athlete gets a stipend or or gets involved in this well every college athletes not every college athletes even allowed to have a scholarship on a stipend so we're not worried about that Greg. I think it's an interesting question to me. I it's it's not even relevant. Thank you for the first okay so interesting quad questions he was. Dan and I are maintaining. That Jay was just being nice. It was terrible. That's right so let's as Jay Bilas. Let's bring him back. Real quick and just get some answers to some questions. The first one Jay Bilas is did STU STU gods know what the hell you're asking him when you came back at him and simply said what issues no. I think he was just ready to move on. He asked this question he could move onto the next thing scratch himself and all that stuff so I don't think he was. He was engaged in a discussion. It was just to let everybody know he's still there all right so the second question is were you being polite to the old man the grandfather. Greg Cody by saying that was a good question and then circling back around twenty seconds. It's later and pointing out that the question was not in any way relevant to the conversation. We were having yes. I respect my elders and the fact that Greg Cody was lumping being in Jay Berwanger Bronco Gerski and Tim Tebow as the only ones who could benefit from their name image and likeness and everyone else. You'd be out on the street. Yes I was being nice that the offense okay Jay. I appreciate that you did that and I've got some follow up questions on this that Buries Cody Cody is super unreasonably interested Kristen right now in having having a word with Jay Bilas because now you've insulted him by pointing out both his age in general that he doesn't know what he's talking about..

"This is the voice on this is a guy who would have made more money than just about any college athlete ever given his level of fame and the purity's that he showed America at every turn. Let's hear Tim Tebow's passion on this. When I was at the University of Florida I think my Jersey was one of the top selling jerseys around the world Kobe Lebron and then I was right behind them and I didn't make a dollar from but nor did I want to because I knew going into college what it was all about. I knew going to Florida my dream school where I wanted to go the passion for it and if I could support my team support my college support my university. That's what it's all about but now we're changing it from us from we from by university versity from being an alumni care which makes college football and college sports special to then okay. It's not about us. It's not about we just about me and yes. I know we live in a selfish culture where it's all about us but we're just adding tiling it onto that we're changes what's special about college football here and we turned it into the NFL where who has the most money. That's where you go. That's why people are more passionate about college sports than they are about. NFL that's why the stadiums are bigger than the NFL because it's about your team. It's about your university. That's about where my family wanted to go. It's about where my grandfather had a dream of seeing Florida winning an SEC championship and you're taking that away so that young kids can earn a dollar and that's just not where I feel like college football needs to go in the NFL in college football. It's not fair. There's a bit of overhead difference between the two Monopoly Appleaday T. Bo knows exactly how much money he left on the table. I don't know maybe Jay Bilas can tell US J. What did you make of all that and thank you for joining us by the way no no? Thank you for having me yeah. I respect the opinion. I think when you I don't agree with any part of that sort of the idea that that college sports people are passionate about it and watch it simply because the players are amador. amateurism has done nothing players. That doesn't make them better players that our students better athletes rates are better people and I don't think passion or or academics or anything else. and money are mutually exclusive. You can certainly do them both and the thing that I would say to anyone who has a Tim's viewpoint on that is if if Tim tebow wishes to play for free or not even maybe not even accept scholarship that's fine but that he is willing to work for free doesn't mean that everyone else should be required to and especially in a in a sport or in college sports where it's a multibillion dollar industry like one thing that that I find interesting is is that players getting more than a scholarship both the NC double a. and some of these conferences especially the PAC twelve now are saying that's GonNa Destroy College sports but nobody says well coaches making ten million dollars a year or facilities that are are the cost hundreds of millions of dollars in merchandising deals and apparel deals and you know television contracts that are multi billion dollar in nature. That's that that's going to be a problem for college sports or that's GonNa Affect Passion or all those things are are what people what people wanna see is it all teeters upon the athlete athlete remaining unpaid and I find that laughably absurd. I don't think any reasonable economists would agree with that. What does yesterday's California ruling mean. I think Dan that means that that we are very very close to players being allowed to monetize their name image and like this that we're we're gonNA going to get to an Olympic model and the NC Double A. is going to have to deal with this. before they were kind of kicking the can down the road saying well. It's too complicated and boy. We really think we should do more. We Wanna do everything we can but but man it's so complex and and all this business and now it's not so complex California's done this the answer is certainly going to sue the NFL in the PAC twelve. WE'RE GONNA sue and and claim that it violates the commerce clause the United States constitution but you know Colorado's those moving on this South Carolina other states and including the United States Congress is is is GonNa make a move on this and and push legislation Asian to make this nationwide so if the NC double A. Doesn't do it. and there's a there's a committee being chaired by Gene Smith of Ohio state and and Val Ackerman the the biggest commissioner. That's that's looking into this and supposed to come up with proposals but my guess is. They aren't going to do very much and wouldn't have done anything absent. absent. California's moved here John. Do you have any issues with it any issues with what with the with the ruling in California. He has no idea what we're talking the law. I don't know I don't I think it's I think it's great but you know it doesn't mean that that it's not going to be challenged well. He's not GonNa try to UH to stop it. Of course they will. you know they've got. They've got their entire model at stake and you know do I think that that if if if players were allowed to do commercials and just like coaches are allowed to do them every other student are allowed to do so. I think the world has spent up. It's access in college. Sports would cease to be of course not and I find it. It's almost offensive that they're holding women's sports out and women's thing this is going to be hurtful to women and it's going to be hurtful to Olympic exports. You know how how would it be hurtful to Olympic sports. Katie was decky could make money outside the pool while she's swimming for Stanford Busy Ferguson could do the same at how and and you know to to Tim Tebow statements and others who feel like like well. We can't let money into the game well money's already in the game like you know what the players didn't and sell this product for billions of dollars. The administrators did they act like Ed McMahon showed up in Indianapolis with a big check for billions of dollars and they're like wait. What we're all this money. Did he come from. They made decisions routinely over the course of years to build this business into what it is a multibillion dollar industry and now now they say it all teeters the entire enterprise teeters on the players being you know being limited to a scholarship only I it. It's almost so absurd. You can't say with a straight face anymore and and I think California's called up bluff I I was. I don't know what you guys thought but I thought it was really interesting that govern Oussama California's decided to sign that that bill into law with Lebron James and Maverick Carter and and and rich Paul and in that environment I mean it was it was really kind of a big Middle Finger Gingrich the up to double a and I I was. I was surprised by that. I didn't think it would kind of take that tone. We will mock Jay Bilas for his Ed McMahon reference in a second but I I got to pressure. McMahon's been death for fifteen years. I'm as Gods. There got mad at me for for for saying what I did about his question and got normally doesn't get man but you cannot with a straight face say you're expecting Jay Bilas to turn that question about about an ask you something you're used to asking your question yeah getting an answer not listening and just having had your voice heard you were not expecting Jay Bilas to ask you. What are you talking about and then you pause because you didn't know exactly what you're talking about and then you've got mad at me. I was looking for the pay to play as talking talking about I did get mad at you. That's second felt like an hour. I understand it was uncomfortable gate where I was fishing for. What it is that we were talking. I just assumed J. knew what we were talking back. No whatever it has no one ever does what we were talking about it. You were talking a little stunned. You're awake. I Apologize Drives for apologize for being caught off guard Jay. This proposed law affects the upper one percent of athletes. Maybe less than one percent of athlete you know the the not bose designed Williamson's. What about the other ninety nine percent. I mean I is this a law that eventually is going to trickle down and broaden to affect more than just the superstar moneymakers Bo I. I don't agree with with your numbers there. I mean this this will this will benefit a ton of athletes elites that are outside of of sort of Zion Williamson's of the world. you know a couple of years ago. It might might be a couple of years ago now a UCF punter had the takedown it down a youtube channel that he was making money off of because the incident violated their amateurism rules so either had to either the ditch that youtube channel which was making money or we had to quit playing football and and you know we we saw Caitland Ohio. She's the Ucla Gymnast who went viral with that amazing amazing performance last year she could've made a ton of money off off or like the center named after that but couldn't so it extends far beyond the stars ars now the stars would obviously make more money than than those who aren't but but this would affect a whole lot of people and and benefit a whole a lot of people okay so let's say we're talking about what five percent maybe my point is. The vast majority of athletes are not in a position to take advantage of this new law. what about them is my point. I might the law broaden where every college athlete gets a stipend or or gets involved in this well every college athletes not every college athletes even allowed to have a scholarship and a stipend so we're not worried about that. Greg I mean I think it's an interesting question but to me I it's not even relevant I mean right now. The answer Aa and multiple sports respect restricts the amount of scholarships that can be provided so when they say hey you know this isn't fair with the best player gets more and then you you look at these Olympic sports. You'RE GONNA wait a minute like most of the athletes don't even get a Scott. They're not even allowed. They have a scholarship so you know I I don't. I don't worry about that like we live in a in a like one thing. I've always found interesting. Is this this SORTA discussion about about quote unquote. Fairness doesn't extend the playing time like nobody's saying well. The Zion Williamson should split time with the worst player on the team because does it. It's only fair I mean. The worst player works just as hard and like any other student these these these folks like all these colleges colleges they know exactly who to recruit and exactly who to put in the game when they WANNA win they know who to pay and everybody understands like every athlete understand stance why somebody plays more and understand why the media goes design after the game they are not going to cry if he does more commercials than them they know it and and it's funny the rest of the world can deal with with sort of you know capitalism and meritocracy or at least the rest of the rest of our country can do that but but we are worried about these fragile athletes that can't handle this one thing and that is that is having a little bit of money in their pocket we need to avoid that at all costs but we can sell them to the highest bidder and and we can make these outrageous statements like well they get free beer free gear like who's kidding who that you know those are based on apparel deals and the players have to wear that stuff there unpaid billboards. They don't have a choice and and look it's great no no players turning down gear here and choose. Everybody likes it but but let's not be naive. They're not getting. They're not getting a a gift card at Dick's sporting goods saying hey by what you want where what you want they're saying. Here's here's complete made a deal on if you wear another manufacturer you and I are going to have a problem. That's exactly the way it's put down to them. Jay Thank you ED McMahon died in two thousand and nine. That's ten years ago that Reference University and I don't know how well he was doing before that thank you for being on with Jay. We appreciate it well. EDWINA shown up. He would've shown up years ago to give all this money. That reference was perfectly timed. Donlevatar talk to Greg Cody of the Miami Herald who is a source of constant frustration and entitlement and narcissism. This is what he says..

"Radio radio show in America. You're the biggest radio show in America. He's just the guy that it's with yeah yeah. Honestly I think Dan's borderline to Dante. Get on dancing with stars they can get in the first word in dance is always. Dan You remember that as a on the pole and put it on the poll at Lebatardshow is Dan famous enough to do dancing with the stars but who would be best in our are group I saw Lamar Odom he was very tall and Meena calms compared him to one of those inflatable car dealership things that blows in the wind he did not look graceful. He looked stiff. Athletes often look good on that show but they don't tend to be Lamar Odom size. Would you WANNA do dancing with no now. That would be terrible. They didn't mention Dan. That's why I mentioned you thought you might WanNa do it. No I would love it. I would embrace it. I don't think famous enough to be on the show but I would love it. the key to dancing is just not caring and no one cares less when they're on the dance floor than me. I don't care be just let it rip when you're on dancing with the stars like routines and you have to memorize two three four five and spent three four byte is it requires your attention and that is not a strength. I I'd like to see it though Oh gear Mo- I wanNA find out how heat media day went for you guys. As Eric's bolsters calling Jimmy Butler one of the top fifteen players in the league and Stu gods feels the need to say he's number fifteen sat in at number fifteen to ask you a question. Dan Le Batard walks six into sports bar shortly thereafter. Michael Waltrip walks in sports smart who gets recognized more. Where's the sports bar yeah. It's a North Carolina go with Michael. Anywhere but North Carolina put that on the poll as well a Michael Waltrip walk into a sports bar who gets recognized because Michael Waltrip was on dancing with the stars. This is a point that I'm trying to make I think Dan is infinitely more famous than my Walter findlay but I do think I'm reading the ground. I'm in the realm of Kenny Mayne Michael Waltrip or the car. He rides in the good question. I think the car it's all about the car. I'd recognize the car before I recognize him isn't Darrell Waltrip than Michael. Yes Michael was on dancing with the stars. Can you imagine that Yeah Walter. It is a famous racing name who who among us would be the best dancer. Would it be billy would guillermo would guillermo do best now. This is a motley crew of dancers right here. I don't I'd like to actually figure you're out gold silver and bronze according to your assessment and it makes me actually want to now try it makes me. WanNa have an inhouse competition in house house dancing with the stars so I've seen a couple of these guys dance like I've seen my daughter's bat-mitzvah. I saw Roy. Danny was fantastic. Mike was a better dancer. Mike was the BA- now. I'm not certain of Chris and Billy. I have a feeling that Chris is very good but Mike was definitely better than better them Roy. I've got a a feeling that your judgment on what is good. Dancing is not very especially that night listen. I spent a ton of time at the ice sculpture doing shots to kill it but I'm telling you Mike look go to the dance floor man billy what are your thoughts who is dancing best in our group. I'm just trying to figure out how it's appropriate to have an ice sculpture to take shots at a thirteen bureaus birthday party. Five boys at that party are you. Were you objecting to any of them. Listen to me fire it had fire bleeders. Zoo cots purchases an ice sculpture. He will be doing shot off of that ice sculpture. If the money's gone in in the Tequila going down expensive Tequila the ball. I'm aware my gift paid for for it all yup guys kill the entire about Mitzvah so dirty sharing an ice sculpture and everybody goes up and puts their mouth on the ice and then you got on the gusting yeah you put your mouth on the of course is anyone surprised that billy when the Party starts and the ice sculpture a sculpture has flowing Tequila that billy's worried about germs. It's what the parties should be billy. It's what it is that you should always pollute a party with your fear of germs. Billy was the beer pong guy who like always worried about. I'm not sure in that. Cup ups. Obviously take your own cubs. You'd never done a keg cake stand right now and I took my balls too because the balls at the floor and then they like Oh. Let's put it this communal cup with water and it's like there's hairs that cup. It's disgusting sanitize that ball a to answer my question then who would be the best dancer. I understand that you want always go your own path. You WanNa blaze your own patent. Who would be the best dancer in our group. It all depends if these are dance routines that are planned out that you need to practice then I don't WanNa to my own horn but I feel like I could learn a dance given even a week or whatever the timeframe is. I feel like I could learn the day I have enough rhythm. Where if I have practice I could do what I'm taught. I can't just go out on a dance floor and like like Oh my God breakout. These moves like if I'm you know Darin from Darren's dance grooves. That's not me are the rest of us are are. Chris Greg me and stugotz willing linked to concede. That billy would do this better than we would are. The four of US willing to concede that I feel like Greg thinks he's the best answer among us. You know. I wasn't going to Brag it but since you brought it up the thing about me is that I'm not into choreography. I would abide having a partner but really prefer not to have of course because you want you want all the attention. I'm a freestyle. Who are the worst ever post vanilla to step side to side. I've seen no no no. I don't have my I will show you. I'M GONNA stand up right now and show you guys how greg cody dances no listen to me because I'm GonNa show you guys when when Greg Cody is at his most vigorous when Greg Cody has had the lubricating forces of liquor that have gotten into his soul all and he's willing to truly be free. I'm going to show you how I always seen him dance. and it is at the height of Greg Cody Dancing. I can't wait. I I can try and keep my mouth during the Mike near the microphone okay It is close enough that this is how greg cody dances. Oh that one yeah that's that's good one giddy up another move no that's. That's my pony dance. I have my Vaudeville dance my pony dance and what I call my reggae dance. Believe it or not which is when I basically keep my feet together and do nothing but move. My upper body also occasionally wop. What is the second dance that you have the Vaudeville and we see the Vaudeville horse approximately gnashing of his knees remember his wedding. Thank you thank you very much. You do a better right yeah. Of course I usually can find my dancing to wedding receptions by the way Don Libertad. Why are you so bad at this Stugatz. I can't answer that it's a good one though I've.
Another Weekend Of Protests In Hong Kong
"In Beijing waiting for Hong Kong's pro democracy protests to dissipate had another disappointing weekend as has been the case every weekend since June in Hong Kong streets have hosted large-scale demonstrations some of them violent at least eighty nine people were arrested and at least eighteen injured a more peaceful protests by university -versities students has taken place today. Lon joined from Hong Kong by Monocle Hong Kong Bureau Chief James Chambers James on the scale of the recent demonstrations demonstration's. How much cleaning up needed to be done this morning? Yes well. Hong Kong got back to to work again this morning and it seems to be a a case of similar things on Monday mornings cleaning up the MTR's railway stations substations. We've become a big focus for for protest kind of violence and vandalism over the last few weeks it has felt felt a bit quieter today in in and around one NJAI and admiralty and Causeway Bay where lots of the the clashes were last night and little shops. You haven't opened so there is a a bit of a clearing up going on and repairing but you know I I got the the MTA to into this morning. using some of the stations is that were vandalized last night's and things are being repaired and Hong Kong's basically getting back to business as is the way of these things it is the violence that commands mom for headlines but how representative of the ongoing protests are those incidents well. The the organization that tries is to or the arrange these big marches. They tried to organize one on the weekend but the police didn't give its authority to go ahead so officially it it it. It wasn't an authorized. March people still went ahead and did it. The the numbers were nowhere near as as large as these marches have been in the past and but as usual these these peaceful get togethers quickly turned into violent clashes so it's definitely a case of of the general the average. Joe Is not necessarily turning out which is big as numbers that happened in the past but the that kind of hardcore what the government would call that radical element. They're still very much on the streets and it's those those people who are pushing these protests into new when I guess more dangerous areas the clashes and the standoff between police and protesters are continuing there's been some worrying signs and worrying scenes where we saw two traffic cops basically surrounded by protesters says carrying Molotov cocktails and taking their guns out in defense people might not realize that police in Hong Kong every police person in Hong Kong carries a revolver aside on and so it wouldn't take much for these these clashes between between police and protesters to really turn ugly for something for someone to to lose their life another worrying development is the clashes between regular Hong Kong's split between the protesters and and the pro government side there was one one one guide got badly beaten up by a group of protesters during over the weekend and had to be taken to hospital in a very critical condition and then these kind of scraps and fights between between the two sides continued into Areas Areas Fortress Hill and north points at Sunday night so there's the on one hand. There's the there's the ongoing caution police in protests but it's also kind of spitting being society more and we're seeing just a regular members of the public get involved in punch-ups. Just finally just quickly detect any a abatement in popular support for the protests as the economic realities of this begin to bite. There's some suggestion that Hong Kong's first recession in a decade is imminent tourist numbers down forty percent and so on. I'm not sure whether it's the the those economic figures that are getting people so to kind of new support for this but I do see from the government side that that the Chief Executive Carrie Lam when she withdrew the bill formerly Sh- I think she does does feel like I have had a big impact. She's very much visible on the streets and at events and speaking at things like she used to be before these protests kicked off because you know at the end of the the day Lotta people a lot of regular people came out because of this extradition bill that extradition bill is only one other five demands that protesters are making but when it comes to the ordinary people in the extradition bill has now been removed. I think that it has has led to a lot of people deciding that they're no longer going to unnecessary turnout in in as many as big big numbers. I don't think that the support is necessary dwindled for a for the protesters but it's very much the more the more radical uncommitted people that we see turning out on the streets day in day out. I don't see that necessarily going away. The the seventieth anniversary for the People's Republic in China is on October the first and that will have a big unifying effect on the protesters so I I feel like big will come out again but at the moment i`ts expect over over the same in the in these kind of smaller skirmishes James Jay Bilas
2019 NCAA championship: Virginia wins its first national title
"Like this. Virginia that seventy five seventy three next to going over time. How big is younger. My goodness. Monsters twenty seven hundred Westwood One. Aa radio network hunter coming up big twenty seven points in the Egypt game. Kyle guy had twenty four Virginia hits all twelve free. Throw attempts in the overtime period. And they come away with the title as you heard eighty five seventy seven in OT. They beat Texas Tech the eighth national title game to go to overtime the first since two thousand eight when Kansas beat Memphis the first national title game between two teams that had never previously appeared in the title game since nineteen seventy nine Magic Johnson's Michigan state team against Larry bird's. Indiana state team Virginia wins this one first title game between schools that had previously never wanted title since nineteen Ninety-one UNLV beat Duke, Tony Bennett becoming the ninth active division one coach to win a national title. I think it was a terrific game to see how these. Guys, played the one thing I said to him before in the locker room. I said you guys faced pressure that no team in the history of the game is faced will really all year. But but being down fourteen against garner web. I said, and you did not panic in that moment, and you fought, and you found a way out I said that I think has prepared you for this moment to the handle the pressure or the the intensity of national championship game. And these guys stepped up to me that was it appeared from Istambul to be a high level game. And you know, we scored eighty five that was in that setting. So good stuff. Hey, coach Bennett. Zach peerless Augusta free press there's a picture in your house. You've talked about before these three guys. Jay huff part of that twenty sixteen class. They've seen a lot of things now and their time at you've yet what are the emotions now attached to that picture? And you know, how does this change that picture in the feelings that you'll see when you see it? Yeah. When they came on the recruiting. Visit remember telling them, look, you're. The foundation has been laid by guys, you know, Joe, and Malcolm are here and all the guys went before. And we had one Sommese championships who've been to be lead eight I said, we're asking to build on that foundation. Even at that house on the hardest step. But if you're willing said, we'll take a chance at mentioned, the rocky post just I said, I want guys wanna chance to title fight and see them come in either as young men or boys and grow into men this season. And I'll mention what happened last year that that can only mature you. I don't know of anything else that would allow these guys to build a handle this situation, the playthrough stuff and to have a perspective and poise and resiliencey unless they went through something that hard, and they're very there's really good players. They don't probably get enough credit. Well, I think someone do their town. But they had something different about them collectively. I just one of our themes. I told them before the Auburn game as just bring your two fish and five loaves. It's a story in the bible. And I said it'll be enough. I said it'll it'll be enough for the masses. I said when you guys play the right way, the collectiveness of it takes over. And I've watched it, and I've stepped back, and I've seen this now seen mature through everything. And for them to do what they did, you know and how they've won. It's a great story really ofensive -ly. It seemed as if the Andre took charge there at the end you telling take charge or sometimes it seems like he's trying not. To take. That's you know, Dan regularly. Let's come in that he he I think he grew up in a way in this tournament in the second half of the Auburn game. And definitely and he was getting his shots. But he just he you saw them and that when he puts that into boy, it's he special, but no he trying to get on the ball ties. So good and our players. They understand. He's like all right. We gotta get him the ball in these situations and go to work, and you know, we did call. I'm not sure what the answer the question. We did. Call an action form to hit that three in the corner. And then one time time to great pass. But he yeah. I thought he really showed an aggressiveness that we needed. You. Need your top players to step up and make plays. And he did it on both ends you just speak to one that the poyser guy showed the overtime. And also the the previous games prepare them for that. They didn't seem either out of gas. They didn't to motion in handling the overtime. No. Well, I tell you we we had. Three Saturday, Monday games. We played Duke at home, and then we had to go to Carolina. And I I think I said this in the podium before. But I said this is how it's going to be in the tournament. And this is how we're going to prepare on Sunday. And and we did that every time we had those games, and we did it in the NCAA tournament that day in between and they knew what to expect. And I said you're built for this. You're prepared for this. Because this is what we did. And we started that process in January and that Carol do Carolina weekend. And I said just get after it, and we worked in between a lot of people's walked, actually, I don't know. What people do I just know from my experiences a coach in the Pac ten home important that day in between and how you prepare well prepare well and get after it. And so I think they they stepped in the moment they face pressure through the year through the turnament and all that stuff played into it. And that a lot goes to our strength coach, Mike Curtis. I mean, he has those guys as finely tuned machines. And and they just they work. We were smart at the end of the year with how much rest we gave them and prepare them. It's just a balance. Obviously, it it hit Tony Bennett with the national championship ninth. Active coach for the title for our current ACC coaches, Mike, shefty, ROY Williams, and Jim boeheim being the others Virginia six team to win. Multiple overtime games of the NC double A tournament in route to winning national title there. The first to do. So since era Zona in nineteen ninety seven. Cavs sixty six and six over the last two seasons. Best win percentage in division. One college basketball live crew restated Seth Greenberg, Jay Williams, and Jay Bilas, the every time in the last three games when things looked grim at the end of the game for junior late made plays. It looked grim at the end of regulation in this one when they were down to and then all of a sudden tied Rome drives, the baseline Texas Tech over helps the Audrey hunter. Who was spectacular? He wasn't good. He was spectacular twenty-seven points nine rebounds that three he hit out of the right corner is the biggest reason that Virginia's able to win the game. That was a spectacular shot. It took advantage of one of the very few defensive mistakes that Texas Tech made throughout the game. And they hung in there, and and grand fashioned to have a chance to win at the end. But Virginia made play after play that end of the overtime. They were great didn't miss a free throw were they were outstanding
Tyus Battle's 32 Lead Syracuse to Shocking Upset Win over Zion Williamson, Duke
"A lot going on in the world of sports. We'll get into more dominance from James harden, a decision that gets pretty easy for the defending Super Bowl champions in my mind at this point a decision yesterday did seem to be a no brainer. That for some reason. I felt like we treated like a lot more than it was. That still has plenty of drama left to unfold for one major NFL prospect. But I. Holy hell Zion. Williamson I understand that Duke lost. I understand that. And if you missed it last night. Syracuse went on the road upset Duke ninety five ninety one in overtime. We got a little free basketball, which for those of us watching the bachelor last night. There is nothing like watching Colton going camping with the girls and the bachelor house and seeing simultaneously. Oh, I'm getting free basketball to this was all of my worlds coming together in the absolute best ways possible. Now for the Duke side of things I understand Duke lost. But when you look at the circumstances around why it becomes not only understandable. But I think it's never excusable. I want to say that right now Duke is too talented across the board the guys that they had left on the court. We're still good enough to where you have to get this done at home. And I say left on the court because part of the story for Duke last night going into the game. Cam reddish, one of the stars in their team missing with illness. Not in an available for them in the game. And then about five and a half minutes in trae Jones their star guard a guy who's a defensive juggernaut for them and a huge catalyst for them. Offensively leaves the game with what Mike chef ski described after as a shoulder sprain. It's a shoulder sprain. And we'll put out because I'm not gonna do medical stuff. But it's a sprain. There's no break, although he was in a lot of pain. He's a kid that the toughest kid right away. I don't know if my car broke bonus broken, you know, and it was that it was hurting that badly, but it's a sprain. And that was my worry. The I I saw that you thought it might have been a broken collarbone, which would have been devastating for this do blue devils team that listen the proof is in the pudding like the when he is on and off the court for them just within the body of this game be five minutes and change that he was on the court during this game Duke point differential, plus eight with him on the court field goal percentage. Fifty five point six percent with him off the court the point differential, minus twelve thirty six point six percent field goal percentage. They suffer offensively they suffer defensively where he's one of the best, man. Demand defenders in the ACC. And so that is going to affect you always said when it comes to injury. Usually we talk about it with the timing going into the season. At different points of the year, injuries are going to affect you differently. And so if you're a star player that gets injured at the beginning of the season ally. Last Joseph the Boston Celtics, for example, Gordon Hayward being injured at the beginning of the season. You spend the entire rest of the year. Figuring out how you adjust without Gordon Hayward. Kyrie Irving being injured right before the playoffs. All of a sudden, that's a major adjustment for a guy who has been a huge part of your offense. You might grow that down to a single game. And Cam rightish, who you know is not going to be available to you. That night is one way you adjust the game plan. Trey Jones going down in the body of that game is another completely when you have to now adjust without that guy on the court for you without the certainly the encore leadership that he brings you and all that production, and so the energy shifted as one might say. To Zion Williamson at RJ Barrett. Who took who scored fifty eight combined points last night the second most by Duke freshman duo under Mike shefty, but it wasn't quite enough. And I say all this again is a backdrop to discredit Syracuse for going in there and getting a win. And Lord knows we have become accustomed to Syracuse teams throughout the course of time underachieving during the regular season finding a way to make a run that alternately lands them in a Sweet Sixteen type season. That's the capability always exists with a Syracuse team. But man, you even heard Jim pay Heim after this who as usual was lighting up the sidelines in a way that the internet sopped up and enjoy tremendously even Jim boeheim after this kind of understood like man, there was a lot working against Duke. And we are still the team as Twitter would remind you last night big night for Old Dominion Twitter. Because ODU Twitter was reminding you the transit of property can be ineffective you so choose and college basketball, and this is a Syracuse team that. Lost to Old Dominion earlier this year, and you can kind of hear their head coach wearing that dukes. Great team. They don't have to other key guys. That's the breaks of the game. Sometimes. Those two guys the whole game. But you know, it's just one of those things. I watched one tape white may eight threes one game. I think seventy a lot. He couldn't tonight. That's just the way the game is sometimes I am. I asked Michael junior here on ESPN radio and the ESPN app. Duke talk about not being able to buy one from three that was the other thing there were a lot of specific jokes made about the sexual prowess of the bachelor over the course of last night. Those were only outnumbered by Duke missed three point shots in a game where they went nine for forty three. Again, a game in which one of their best offense players out. They went nine for forty three. The most three point field goal attempts in school history. Duke now becoming the fifth AP number one team to lose at home to an unranked team in the last ten seasons. So. An outlier in a lot of ways. Again, you look at all the things surrounding this performance. I'm inclined to look at these and not excuse a loss. But understand the circumstances around and say, all right. I'm not going to sound the alarms yet for do. Because this is still a Duke team that again man you saw what Zion is capable in. The midst of all this for a team that has struggled this season against own. We know no one really runs it better than Syracuse. In a lot of ways Zion still thirty five points in a loss. He goes thirty five and ten in this game. He becomes the first major conference player. With thirty five ten four and a game since Kevin Durant. Did it back in two thousand and seven and you saw for all the talk. We had about on a while back. I want to be known as more than just a dunker. You saw that on display last night because him going down and being that differentiating force in the paint. And that's where in the past by the passed earlier this season when you look at the other loss to zag and the things that undermine them in that game with teams clogged up, the paint, this outfit tend to have a bit of trouble. And you saw them do a better job of that last night. They just couldn't hit shots. Like, it's we always hear about the NBA to make making mislead couldn't hit shots your one of your best players and a guy who initiate your offense. And your defense goes out within the first five minutes of the game last night. And all of a sudden the plan changes. Now, what it means going forward becomes entirely different and Jay Bilas ESPN college basketball analyst pointed that out that long term for Duke. The worry. I think any team that loses a point guard like that is going to have some issues and.
Reports on Jordan McNair's death paint troubling picture of Maryland Football
"Allegations of a toxic coaching culture under head coach DJ Durkan before they lost a teammate, offensive lineman. Jordan McNair died in June after a football workout. We are talking very serious allegations from many of those within the Maryland program, including a coaching environment based on fear and intimidation. An example of a player holding a meal while in a meeting had the meal slapped out of his hands in front of the team weights and other small objects thrown in the direction of players by strength trainer, verbal abuse, obscenity laced, epithets mocking players. Masculinity when they cannot compete a workout or complete a workout or a certain lift says, coaches have endorsed unhealthy eating habits and used food punitively like a player saying he was forced to overeat to the to the point of vomiting back to former. Terp staff member said, quote, I would never ever allow my child to be coached there. This is problematic. And now an update here, head football, athletic trainer. Wes Robinson and director of athletic training, Steve Nord. Well, Nord wall rather have been placed on administrative leave while the school continues to review the circumstances surrounding Jordan McNair, death that according to sources who've told ESPN this Myron, this is a problem.

"jay bilas" Discussed on The Rich Eisen Show
"Rodney hood y y is he getting the minutes and tyler said because i want them to this is an awkward exchange jay bilas joining us here on the rich eisen show has promised how're ej great rich how are you i am hanging in there thank you so very much let's get right down to it then you're you're part of the worldwide leader in sports draft analysis it is now the draft analysis season now that we know who gets to choose wear what do you think the phoenix suns are going to do with that i overall pick jay bilas i don't know that phoenix needs there's not one player that's gonna make phoenix contender so they need pillars that are going to they're going to be able to build on for a long period of time so you can make a case i don't think there's a nobrainer lebron type player in this draft he's okay clear number one and everybody else's number two three and four i do think that that the andrei eight and verizon is the top prospect in the draft but i think you could make a credible case especially considering how well phoenix knows luca donncha the slovenian kids playing for real madrid that you know in today's game having a six eight guard that can they can't really pass the ball and the ball will move with him and the game you could you could put a high high value on that and he's he's young with with experience way beyond his years haven't played against men for so long playing in europe so to me it would be between those two i would go with and but but that's just me i mean aden's like a prototype power forward and mba that can step away and knocked down threes and play with his back to the basket run clays and he's the real deal but there's a good case to be made for as well obviously the fans would know eytan more of close impersonal in that regard but i imagine that's not the reason why a team should go ahead and make a trade 'cause you know.
