"The whole, the whole way, white was going to change because that was pretty dominating, you know, my first year very and I were up there. We were over 300 shows. Three hundred days, and a lot of times we know those shots, you know, on the weekends, so I have no clue how many matches we put in. TVs do three or four matches. So yeah, it changed a lot, you know? And but you know, it was a very exciting time because, you know, you wanted to be on Hogan's show, that for sure, because when you went to a building, no matter what size it was, it was sold out. So what you were saying just so people understand is you were getting paid a percentage of the gate. So if you're on holt's show, you're selling out the garden with 50,000 people. It's better than being on the broader show of Syracuse in front of 2000, for example. So, you know, and that's the way it worked. I mean, if you had to run over, you were going to make some serious money. And but Barry and I worked with she can volkoff, which is really interesting. Trust me. Because I remember one time we went to Boston, we were in Buffalo and they put Don Morocco, know it was down Morocco was down the heel team with Nikolai and we have George Steele as a partner. And Morocco and we're waiting to go out and we look up in the ring, the Sheik is doing his debt, Nicola ice singing the national anthem in Russian. Here comes about 50 raw eggs. That whole ring is covered in Asian smells and yolks and so they basically just took one of those big broom. Sweeping this stuff out to the floor in our music here. And we come back and Rocco told the age and I think was stronger on the show, chief Jay strongbow. Whoo. He said, if I got to work with those guys, I want hazard pay. Well, yeah, we had a lot of fun. It was interesting when she rolled pops, so I'm sure just trying to listen to them speak English. I got boy stories with that guy and, you know, he's coming down bad. How are you general person to go on the road? I don't know who this is. The cost of banks, Chris, everybody. And I got that shot to Jake earlier two or 2000 people. No, but of course it's the bus that will live in for me. Me and the sheep and the Pearl Harbor. The biggest shame for me from coming out of mid south territory, which we don't work a lot in mid solid, but you drive like 3000 miles a week was it a lot of driving, but you would know the towns. You come up to New York, the WWF, they give you a stack of tickets and say, oh, be at the LA arena 6 o'clock. It'll be in Boston at 6 o'clock, and I'm thinking, how do you get there? I could never get to a drive by at this point. Thank you very good there, no. I would be mad, but that was a big transition to come and find buildings like that. But also as you were talking to WWF, it was before contracts. If you didn't wrestle, you didn't get paid to be wrestled you got paid and showed you were part of an angle. You wanted to work as much as you could. For sure. Well, and that's the thing too. I think when you guys are talking about 300 days a year, that's not exaggeration.

"You started you got your Reggie parks title and you started working, you know, making these titles for the indie shows. What was kind of your first big break in making belts? I think probably getting to be friends with Jerry Lawler. He was the first guy to ever put anything that I did on television, which was at the time really just fixing up some of his old belts. But he believed in me. And gave me a chance and, you know, there was no big initiation, no big wall, can you do this or can you do that? It was like, okay, I've seen your stuff. Hey, man, take these USWA tag team belts and put them on new leather for me and polish them. I don't like that paint scheme. We've changed that for me too. And that kind of thing. And so we started there until it was time to start replacing valves. And then that's where I got the shot a little bit more, but it's still really started. With Jerry putting my stuff out there and being willing to do that and also endorse me to other people in the business. That we're interested in are needed some work done. So when you mentioned that like Casey, now you're fixing up the USWA tag titles. And now you have to make one I'm assuming what you said you have to make a new title or whatever it is that so are you in charge of the design of this and kind of how do you go about that? Yeah, in that case because it was a time force this is already into the late 90s, not done some other stuff outside of Memphis, really, but nothing notable. And if it was shiny and it looked good on television. Then nobody was nobody was micromanaging. And really, that's the Reggie way to, I mean, so many designs that people look at or iconic championship belt designs were an afterthought to Reggie because the classic winged eagle title they call it the Bret Hart belt or the Shawn Michaels with people you associate that winged eagle title belt with was a phone call from chief Jay strongbow to Reggie saying we want to belt where the eagle consumes the main plate. And the rest of it was Reggie and his team and it kind of in Memphis, it was the same way. It's like, we need a new USWA heavyweight belt. What can you do for us? And that was it. It was just left up to me, which was pretty easy to do in those days. There was no micromanaging. That eagle belt, the last person to ever hold. It was me. You had the bigger one. You had the Joe Marshall. Yeah, yeah, you had the bigger, you had the upgrade, the one that started with stone cold. Yeah. My gosh, too, you know, just being a championship to beat the stone cold and The Rock in one night. Come on. And the funny thing was, so for that whole time frame of being the indisputed champion, I had to carry the eagle, which you said it's the Joe until Marshall. Joe Marshall, and then there was also the WCW title as well. Which was cast off the old original Ric Flair belt. Both of them just heavy as hell. Very, very heavy. So I had to carry on, and listen, I'm not complaining, but for about four months, I had to carry both of those through the airports. And then the day I lost it to Triple H, they then gave them a brand new undisputed undisputed amalgamation of the two. I was the last guy that had to carry both. So when did you kind of graduate out of Memphis, did you go make some stuff for WCW first? Or for a bit of a year for both? I was kind of on the tail end of the WWE breakup we call it that they had become unhappy that Reggie wouldn't sign a contract. He'd never signed a piece of paper to make anybody a belt. We didn't want to start, and there were a couple of other issues there where he would make those desires for anybody that asked him. And you're talking still in a mostly pre Internet age. So I was kind of in on that stuff, but they also had Reggie's name on them and I was just the protege. So, you know, I did some stuff. I think around that time, you know, some stuff in Japan. I think GHC has started popping up global honored crown and probably sold earlier new Japan stuff and things like that, and then there's always the indie shows, which had gotten bigger and better. And so there's that. And then, gosh, NWA, TNA, UFC, from the time that the zuffa organization had fallen out UFC, they came to us. And we started making their belts, and they would order 6, and we'd finish those sticks, they over 6 more, and we did that for ten years. So that was a steady job in itself. And that kept Reggie and I both busy doing those for years. So you have that and then the meantime, TNA pops up and you do everything for them for years and WWE comes back around. And start doing stuff for them again. And in the meantime, we had collector licensing deals to make belts or WWE handmade replicas. And we did that for years. And back when you could still use the old classic logo that everybody to this day still wants and go to bootleggers for 'cause we can't legally make them anymore. Oh, yeah. So, you know, it was always something. And then you just branch out and of course this is later more recent years, but you end up doing stuff for television shows and lip sync battle television show and I will always forget Madonna, Madonna came to us and we made her a string of belts to both for album covers and for her to wear on stage during tours, including

"Promo code Jericho. So let's back up a bit as far as how this all took place. And almost talk about it for people who haven't seen the show who don't know much about it. How did it get to this point in the first place? Obviously, more of a nutshell version weight. Yeah, I mean, the short thing is it's doctor George Sahara in a sign by the athletic commission, was backstage at WWE events for years, and he was handing out steroids to wrestlers who would get line for them along with other drugs. And he landed on the radar of government officials. It was a time when steroids had become the classification legally had changed in terms of it was for a doctor to give steroids for wrestlers. And so the government was looking to, I mean, the army was the government's looking for someone to make an example out of. And they went after Vince McMahon. The idea was he distributed steroids tolko directly. That was a charge. And that he also was conspiring to distribute steroids within the company. The prosecution had this big memo internally that they blew up and closing arguments that showed that they were aware of doctors ahrar and the government looking into them. That's what roughly a 32nd nutshell. Dave, what granular nuanced yet to that? So the things you have, the law changed and zorian was actually put on trial and it was like almost a test case. And they had him dead to rights, and he was convicted. He was distributing steroids to a number of WWE wrestlers. And also to a strength coach, which is what happened was that they got a bill done who was a good friend of a restaurant named Steve muslin, where Steve Travis, as he was known in WWE, Sue Travis put him in touch with sorian and he had believe he was a track coach of high school kids who was getting steroids for his team, right? So and sore and they had like they wired done to go to sorian and Jordan just acted like a drug doctor. It's like, you know, you give me the cash. I'll give you the drugs. You know, I mean, they have that on tape. And so then they started investigating Saroyan and found the connection to all the wrestlers. And so the hoarding trial goes on to Lorraine's convicted and then film mushnik is writing about it and in the New York papers and everything. And yes, yes. Then start steroid testing and mushrooms writing more and more stuff. And then the eastern district just the Justice Department of the eastern district looked into it and was sort of like let's go after Vince and it was not just on those charges, but the other charges couldn't stick. So it ended up being just on the steroid charges. And, you know, there were certain things that happened and the key one, you know, in the difference in the long run, the difference between the guilty and the not guilty is the fact that a government official tipped off Linda McMahon and told her that the soaring guy's hot, we're investigating him. And so they cut all ties with Saharan. Because if that had not happened, they would not have cut ties with the warrior. And there was enough that happened where I'm pretty sure that Vince this would have been found guilty because I guess the key thing in the case, the key thing in the case is that there was a woman named Anita scales who was in charge of booking doctors for the, for the live shows. Dorian was assigned by the Pennsylvania state, by the Pennsylvania athletic commission. And then the commission changed its bylaws and said, okay, we're not going to be assigning the doctors anymore. You know, you wrestling and boxing river. You pick your own doctor at ringside. We're not going to send a doctor. So when they would go to eastern western Pennsylvania, the Allentown area, Hershey area. So we're going to have been the doctor going back to the 70s, I think, maybe even earlier. The 70s. And then you just scales knew about the horns. Horn was not a guy that people didn't know about it in wrestling, everybody knew, oh yeah, go to WWE. I mean, everybody would go to WWE, they'd get 20 pounds bigger. You know, and more muscular. And so you go to WWE go to zahari and he hooks you up and you get a great body because, you know, from brutal San martino to superstar Graham and everyone in between, WWE had always been built on these 260 pound big, strong looking dudes. And so that's what they wanted at their main events. So scales knew that Zoran was a bad guy and was a dealer and wanted to cut all ties with him. So she basically called got her own doctor for that show. And then Patterson and Jay strongbow called her up and was just like, you got a book to hurry and you got a bookstore and you know, for when we go into the cities and she said, no, I'm not going to do it. And then she got the word from actually she went to Linda McMahon and went to Linda and goes, these guys are harassing me. They want me to book sore and I don't want to book so orient and Linda goes, do what pat says. So she told by Linda, you know, she books zahari and for the next date in Hershey. And they all know and there's no way in a trial that you could save interest didn't have knowledge because Vince was one of the guys who was a client of zorian Vince would be on the days of they would go there, Vince would get his stuff from sorian too. So, Vince can not say, I didn't know. So it would be Vince hiring a guy who he fully knows his distributing steroids and downers and other things to pro wrestlers. And some of the downers were also controlled substances. It wasn't just the steroids. The hoarding trial was built on. And so if he had actually been hired and worked a show, I think there's a really good chance that Vince would have been found guilty of conspiracy, but before the show, when he gets the tip off and Linda calls up a new scales and goes, get rid of zahara, we got to cut all ties with the orient. So there's a way to actually never work that even that very first show. And that was the difference. One trial note too. When the jury wasn't present, a lot of the focus between the prosecution and defense was on the wording of the judge's instructions to the jury. And the prosecutor Sean O'Shea cited cases were defendants, did not need to know all the details of a conspiracy. As long as he knew of its existence, and he knowingly joined and participated in it. And the judge was real combative. He said, I thought you would have a stronger case about earlier. You should have had a stronger case. You told me you would about on the two distribution counts, and then he ended up throwing them up, but the judge said mere knowledge of a conspiracy is insufficient for a conviction. You can know a criminal without being one. And the judge was away from the jury saying he was going to tell in jury instructions. He was going to say proof beyond a reasonable doubt so often that the jury would be sick of hearing it. And so part of why there was confidence that jury come back, not guilty as courtroom observers were seeing the judge's attitude towards this case and what his instructions to the jury were going to be. And he was really going to emphasize the aspects where the judge felt the prosecution came up short. Talk is Jericho's supported by Steven singer jewelers. "The summer, is getting into radio, something you would consider again doing anything on the radio. All the audio I want to do is right here for Connie. And to work with the guys like you and try to help build this entity. There you go. So we're all making more money. You know, Conrad's very fair. How we all get taken care of. It's all a productivity. So if you want to draw more promote more, I have better shows. And embrace that audience is following you. So I don't like radio. I like big guests on radio shows. But they have a daily show, how do you do it? Yeah. I mean, it's only worth spending thought on them because it's just physically impossible. For me. Leon says JR do you still keep in contact with Baker Mayfield and do you plan on attending any browns games this year? Occasional direct message. You know, during football season, I don't bother my football buddies football season. They'll get a tax or a tweet. Something like that. And I don't know, I don't have any plans right now to go to Cleveland. But at the last time I was there, I had a great time. So Becker stood good. There you banged up right now. Hopefully you'll get back on his feet and get healthy. He said it would be. I'll tell you that he's a tussle bastard on the snow BS. I just got his Oklahoma guy. He's tough. He's got a great moxie. A little swag to it. And that's what you love your reality. I'll call him cowherd doesn't like him at all. And I believe this part that that's kind of a work. Because it hits a chord when he said when he was pronounced. When a Colin coward calls him out, people rush the occasion. A lot of in arms. I think he's got a good gimmick. So you're gonna take a column cowherd. I've been on his show great show. He's always smart guy. Smart guy. And I really enjoy talking. I enjoy talking with him off camera as much as I did on the air. He's a really funny guy and kind of guy you want to have a beer with. So I got all the time or call a coward, even though here's another stock of the wrestling fans. I don't agree with all colic yards. Velocities is stances. Yeah. His views. But it doesn't mean I don't like to listen to it. You know, somebody's going to say in this show, who's your Mount Rushmore, women wrestlers? And that of a human issue, somebody. I can't believe he left out Trish stratus in the leader and I didn't get to. Do I love him and are the great stars? Absolutely. I deserve to be an all of it. And I'm glad I get to sign both of them. But there'll be something made of this bullshit. So I just, you just understand in this day and time, this is how it is. And when you have the realization that this is how our society lives in a 140 characters or whatever. Then you have to understand the terms of engagement. Now if I could light age, I understood this. I don't get pissed off of somebody's opinion and there's a lot of me. I get anger and Smith says it looks like he had another stroke. Well, first of all, I've never had one stroke. Where'd you get that? It Wikipedia. Or something. So that bothers me. And they block them. Are we done? I'm not going to try to talk you out of it. I'm not going to try to get you to change your mind. I'm not going to engage you in conversation. I want to say fuck you. A block in your ass. And it may not mean anything. But it means I want to listen to your shit no more. There you go. There you go. They have given us the ability to block and mute. Alex says you mentioned once that Memphis didn't work out as a training center for WWE. Can you elaborate on that? Well, what is the other personnel? Infrastructure was it had nothing to do with Jerry Lawler? But I can't remember what the fellas name was. It was a point man of that. And I should know his name, I apologize for getting it. But he just, you wouldn't cut out for that role. Yeah. And for we consolidate by going to Louisville and OVW, cornet and Danny Davis riff Rogers all those cats. And Cincinnati or Thatcher was located with his guys. And feel like we were just fine. And we were. I think we tried to grow too fast. You know, if we had all our charge of it, and he was one of the investors time in it. There have been different story, but he was busy doing other things in TV every week. You can't expect a guy like that to add more shit just play. So just infrastructure is in that larger issue. Didn't put the right people in the right positions to make that a little operation work. Simple as that. Up next, Mike dolman, and he wants to know what is Jim's opinion and what in your opinion is the worst chewing out he has had from vents, I'm sure there's many, but does one stand out as the biggest? Yeah, I tweeted out the death of Jay strongbow. And Vince got extremely high rate about that because strombo investor long time buddies..

"Would you blame them. You know i would you blame him so It was a great night there in chicago. I remember i remember the crowd. We weren't sure of the crowd was gonna react badly. They reacted big time. They're ready for chris jericho. Well this. big countdown finally pays off in the middle of the rocks. Promo boy. You wanna talk about getting thrown into the deep end. You're gonna go one on one on the microphone with iraq. This is a this is a real life test. Here is it not. Yeah yeah absolutely and also how do you. What is your demeanor. You look like you belong. you look like you're in the same Level as joint. Johnson and chris had that confidence that i can be a main event guy. I can work with rock. I can work with all stuck worked. Anybody and he could and he did so I thought it was phenomenal. Way to fantastic. Rita introduce him and he stood toe-to-toe with rock in that little promo battle and a lot of guys is very intimidated with a full house. There in chicago. there it wasn't rosa. What is it. Call now. A allstate arena. Yeah yeah yeah. So a in their man and he proved to get into deep water slim. Let's mention to that Well i guess we just wanna context when we saw when we last saw jericho in. Wcw where he's frustrated with creative. beating perry saturn in a loser. Where's address match and now he's interrupting the rocks promo. That's a pretty big difference. Yeah lexcen middle seat. Coach are getting that al seat first class or a private jet. That's better even showed you belong. That's what we wanted so we needed to see. Do you belong in the same age with the rock. And he looked like he'd been there forever. Unfortunately there is no real follow through or follow up on that moment with the rock He gets into a quick view against road. Dogg xbox ken shamrock and really the biggest thing of note is you guys give him a quote unquote heater mr hughes. I'm curious from your perspective where it is courtesy us come from in this jericho package. Well the fan of kurdish use a not for a long time. I used to kidney about. He was defensive tackle for a kansas state. Wildcats and of course being a maslakh you a You know kind of proud of my team sooners. You're proud of your team. That's crimson tide sir I used to call in the mile. Cats m. i. l. d. cats and he laughed a good good natured. Guy you know. He almost got fired after wrestlemania nine because he fell asleep in the air and coach and chief. Jay strongbow cities high. All of that guy. We got i got to tell caesar caesar course events we gotta get rid of this guy he. He derived to that conclusion by sitting cross the way with his wife and me. You'd five at connecticut. And there was curtis on the other side knows and all until we found out he had a he had a sleep disorder narcolepsy. Whatever they called up arden. Wrong but curtis curtis battle through it. And i like curtis. I don't know that. Chris needed a heater. That was this kind of trend at that time. You know diesel mccain shawn michaels heater. This guy's got a heater. I don't know where that came. Oh the heater ricky. Major league So i i didn't think we needed it but look if it had clicked better bigger than i win. Jericho's getting special treatment getting handled creatively. Well so The curtis is a good guy. Curtis getting ready to write a book which should be very entertaining economic. He wants me or to it. But it's interesting you know. He was corrected he was a black man and an orlando white decision. Makers and so. I got time for kurdish shoes by just didn't think that was the cashing for him. He should have been a big monster heel on his own. In my opinion it doesn't last long. He's going to come. And go in this jerko package pretty quickly and then howard finkel winds up being lackey and frankly this isn't the top level guy run. He probably envisioned when he's interrupting the rock after this big millennium man countdown. In the rumor and innuendo at the time was he wasn't being given rave reviews of his work and allegedly one of his biggest critics behind the scenes was triple h. And we've heard a lot over the years that even if you come in to the world wrestling federation which was time of course if you didn't work. The wwf style candidate matter in terms of well you know. This guy was over in japan or he was over in mexico or he was over in. W w well they didn't exist. Conrad the story was there was a different style and you had to learn the wwf style. Do you agree with that. Or was that just nonsense. I think he needed to learn the ww f. e. whatever you wanna throw in their field the atmosphere of the society of wwe. Yet i understand. There are certain things you could. You should do. Should not do there. and i think i just i don't know i a i don't know triple h didn't like him because he's shorter and his hand and some somebody's are gonna get They're gonna get you know. Figure out what he's what he's all about. And all that stuff. But i our off that i thought for guys smartest. Paul eveque is i saw. He's getting better issues. Which is great you know. He's so smart insi- calling the name of the cerebral this on a on an entrance. This love you. That's good shit. That was one of my favorite things he said to me years. That's good shit of good shit..

"As a way to get my foot in the door i got my room in the castle by starting out as a referee in ring crew. And all those things. So jerry was jerry that good reference brother and jerry was very talented. I mean he's a german l. research. Jerry had a lot of fire. So we're talking about that but nonetheless It's funny how they all got. Everybody got their found their way into mcgurk offices territory and leeway at a special places heart for us. Sochi's mcgurk was from tulsa. He's the former national champion. At guess where oklahoma state so is is quite the intertwining and intermingling of contacts and so forth that got us all together through that same conduit or they call the transfer portal. That's right yeah. I think we're all the same portal so it was cool. Hey so the. The briscoes are part native american. But they were never booked the way you would see a wa who mcdaniel or chief jay strongbow or a taco. Why do you think that is it. Feels like in that era of wrestling especially promoters have just jumped all over that that was risk choice. Good yeah they wanna stereotype their native american heritage with a native american headdress and all the typical native american attire They were proud native. Americans there in the i think they're in the I went to their when they were inducted into the hall of fame. They're here in oklahoma. I think it's trying to think what tribe there and i'm a cherokee and their Maybe chop chickasaw chickasaw. There you go. yeah chickasaw. And they're are their honored members the chickasaw nation plaques and things like that down here in oklahoma. I think it's ada. I drove down for their induction. Kind kinda cool. All the family was there now. It's a big deal to be recognized by your tribe your people and so that was. That was the deal. They had great. They have great pride in their heritage but they didn't want to exploit it. They wanted to the all the announcers. Gordon selling everybody you know. They'll say you know. These guys are native. Americans and i think they're like three quarter. I don't their full blood. They might be. I never did ask jerry. That but i knew he was proud of his heritage and that was her choice. Not to be stereotype like wa- who for example. Well we know. Jack is going to become one of the biggest stars in wrestling including becoming the world champion. But as far as his brother jerry goes boy they had some legendary feuds with the funk brothers explaining to our listeners who might not know anything about the brisk in the fox. I mean at the end of the day. This is like a college football. Rivalry almost texas versus oklahoma right without a doubt and that texas oklahoma row orie was real when they will go to wrestle. Young young ty young period of time Whenever young trying to say they go to the amarillo territory. And jerry will tongue-in-cheek said. We'll say well. Every time we went to amarillo the man oh man funk of beat beater ass but that was far this charm because when the before they're all champions to the funk's game to report from mcgurk which is not that often they did they honors. So that's that rivalry betrayed oklahoma. Texas was real. It's just football rivalry the second saturday not tober in in the cotton. Molin dallas more than that. That's how we all grew up. And so they took a lot of pride in that and of course. The old story of dory got hurt allegedly in a car. A pickup truck accident. Run talk about that. And he was supposed to drop the title to jack it houston and that income off because dory was unable to do perform because the accident and then and only if you're listening briscoe side of the story. They think that accident was not as serious as it was made to be. Caused missed the. Oh man font did not one of his sons to lose the title in texas to an okie may sound really stupid. The fans listening right now. That can't be let us. This out was right so that was the story there. There was and they had that great rivalry that they parlayed into money for decades. That briscoe rivalry was huge is so so tickets Everywhere every territory they went whether it was an atlanta or florida or the carolinas Wherever it was they they made the promoters money and then the consequently they've made money out of it as well so that. Oh you texas thing was real in the world of the fox friscos. I want to mention Nineteen seventy-three jack. Gerald and one of the non wrestling brothers. Bill opens up the briscoe brothers body shop. Which of course. If you're watching and the attitude era you remember Did you ever do any business with the body shop. And how common was it back in the seventies for wrestlers to start to plan maybe an out of the ring business to count on once their in ring days are over. It was his comments that as it should have been connie because a lot of guys thought they're making good money and that money will never end right and that that's the case today. A lot of guys you know you ask somebody young kids. What do you want to do as your as your career moose forward And this. I don't know this is all i'll ever wanted to do so that you can very one dimensional and what i always realize my signed somebody at their only goal is to be a wrestling star and that was that was that was her whole hand. They're going all in firsthand all in then. I would keep an eye on that scenario because then all of a sudden when you don't make it to the main event level or you're not making the money that you perceive that you should be making. Are you wanna make our need to make you would You know you you start doing making mistakes. You start taking shortcuts..

Did you join a gang yet. Fair question just hilarious huntsville alabama. After six months in calgary he moves onto detroit and completes his training under the chic with his pedigree. Being johnny valentine son and being trained by stu hart and the chic. I guess it's no surprise. That hammer had quite the run and wrestling. What was the reputation of sheikh. As a trainer. We've heard all about stu hart and the dungeon as a trainer but what about the chic chic was mean son of a bitch to again. These are old timers the that taught you to reality is it. Is this respect. The business and the reality the business and if you couldn't hold up your end if you couldn't if there wasn't a confidence that you could go into any bar anywhere in the united states and walkout being able to kick most anybody's ass in that bar and then you didn't long in the business. Yeah so it explains a lot about greg because people always talk about just how unmercifully tough. Greg was His upbringing in his training and his first few years in the business was was just that i know you know Johnny had a buddy roberts who became valentine at one point his career But it was a free and took an asshole but nobody else will. Somebody had to. Yeah michael please. So let's talk about this. You said a you. Remember valentine texas. Did you see greg and texas ashok greatest fargo as far as you ever see him as greg valentine yes in texas i will. I will look and see if i have. There is a picture of greg ground line and it's like wrestling pictures. You got his fist up. He's got another His other hand up. Like a elbow smash. I know that picture. Okay and i would draw lines as if his hair was combed straight back on that picture the habit in a program somewhere just to say that that is i mean because you know you couldn't deny that he was johnny valentine's kid i say so you as a little kid rock shining valentine's something yeah related but then they they said oh shining. Valentine's brother He's younger brother. He heads to florida and becomes. Johnny valentine junior before settles on greg the hammer valentine so i guess this is a move. Nobody wants to be the senior. Perception's reality you don't ever want to be perceived as being too old and maybe not a physical threat. Anyway japan in the mid seventies before his world turned upside down as you mentioned his father's part of that infamous plane crash with ric flair. David crockett Ultimately he's not going to be entering performer. Moving forward his father. Johnny we mean but greg is quickly brought to mid-atlantic to replace his father and man. His career jump started from there. He retires johnny. We were teams with ric flair. They become the nwea world tag team champions and it's kind of fun to see the royal rumble. Ninety two all those years later and flair and valentine or trading chops but way back in seventy six they were the tag champs. Everything in wrestling's full circle isn't it usually yeah. Greg was able to know horrible capitalize off something like that but at the same time greg was logical choice and it was it kinda put greg and his rightful spot. You know what. I mean as as jami son and let them have it man. He was johnny son. And i like greg was proudly johnny son especially in the wrestling business to a point but it it was. It was logical. Greg makes his biggest mark. In nineteen seventy seven he defeats wahoo mcdaniel for the mid atlantic heavyweight title and of course breaks his leg This is the classic an iconic opera wa whose leg. then we've all seen that shirt and old images even if he didn't live through the angle it has become an iconic angle shirt as a result. We're you seeing stuff like this in the crockett era. Just through the magazines at the time. Yeah that's all you saw that point. Was you got the. The pro. wrestling illustrated was thing at that point yet. The wrestler breslin wrestling or view wrestling monthly. And that stuff. I gotta figure out what was going on elsewhere around the world the whole opera. Coie whose leg t-shirt boy. That was just a house ahead of its time marketing yeah mansions. I had sold the thing. I just really think have been huge. It is it a surprise to you that given his pedigree and has quote unquote work rate. And all that and believability that he was never interviewed world champion hard he not really fit the mold. But you just take a look at champions from that era anything. Great could have been the one of those guys. Greg could have been one of those guys definitely. Because i think greg could have handled the travel and greg could handled anybody in any rain anywhere in the world so i don't know again the championship committee. If you will people that would make those determinations and make those choices. A lot of times. Didn't always have really good rymer reasons why they chose certain guys do it other than they wanted to get their territory guy. Yeah they won't take their they want their guy from their territory being the top guy so when he dropped it he came back and he was former champion. I'm glad you mentioned that. Because you know. Recently i've been having conversations and some other podcasts. About how the old system you know was almost mob like you know instead of there being the head of the five families that we hear about you know from the the mafia here are all these heads of the territories and they're gonna get together one big annual convention and decide. We're going to give you this guy and you're gonna take that gun here's our turf and but politics were always a part of wrestling that sign a new thing right but not everybody got to participate in those right. Not everybody got to participate in the meetings. When it came down to the meetings to determine the jambi was going to be what big moves there might be. It was only a few guys very closed off very closed off. And if you if you warn a card carrying member and in a And even if you were in the meeting it didn't mean you had any stroke. No because but but the smaller meeting the decision making meeting. yes yeah. They're only if you guys in that. Usually consistent like fred's eddie graham jim barnett Mushnik and roy shire. I don't even know. Roy even made those because roy didn't believe in the nba championship. He thought it was the fucked. I need them for. So let's keep it on track here talking about valentine. He has a brief stint with the w. w. w. f. But given the success of what happened in mid atlantic they thought well. Hey why not bring it up here. So what he no he wants breaking the leg of chief jay strongbow. We've often said here on the show. It's almost a thing in the wwf. You're bald and have not somebody who's gonna hit you with a fucking car. You're a native american. Greg bells looking to bust your leg-up men..

"Wrestle. Who else would have been working with town. I mean i know you're fresh so you're sort of. I think he laid out on the show in the past. You are really doing a little bit of everything. Weren't necessarily doing only this only that you're all over the place anyway. Who would have been working with talent. Would've just been agents at the shows. And who do you think that cast and crew may have looked like in in nineteen eighty seven the agents chief jay strongbow stoning rios pat patterson monsoon guys like that would work for towel We could basis at the house shows so the agents that were in the house shows were able to work with him every night and pata. Tv but it was moored at that time that we put guys on the house shows to go out and see how the audience is reacting to them. Before you'd ever get on television and then get a feel for what they do what they are and Ideas as to what to do with them from there then make every tv and work from their company. Through what sort of transition you think a wrestler would need to make in order to be ready for the prom and the wwf really at the height of the golden era here and the the shadow of wrestlemainia three. There's more people watching wwf programming than ever before Your network or syndicated network continues to grow by leaps and bounds. You've got prime time specials. You've got late night specials. You've got a lot of really great stuff on the horizon. Not just on cable but on broadcast television. And now you're taking these talent and this one in particular what he's two years in the business less than that and now he's going to be part of this roster and sure he may have some of the the quote unquote moves down and he might understand basic match structure. He learned all that in wrestling school and through doing matches across the country and even in japan but now he's got a really turn the volume up and be a personality that's larger than life and he's he's a relatively young man here. What what did that process look like because it feels a little overwhelming when you put it in context like that i think it probably was overwhelming obama. You know he'd been used to kinda being out on his own in really is only mentor. Being larry sharpe who think that larry probably fit into his head. Don't trust anybody just more than more than anything. A attitude of distrust think with with all promoters in anybody in the business. Wasn't larry so i think bam bam kind of had that in his head without any validation to anybody early scott have been in the in the business that long to have that kind of feeling or or to feel that way Exclusives own endeavors so no bam bam coming in it was. It was a pretty raw lump clay. You could mold with some decent foundation and some some pretty good skills. You know. We've heard over the years that While the wwf as the land of the giants and advance has an affinity for larger than life characters. And we've even heard an explanation. You know what do they look like in an airport. Do they turn heads in an airport. Everyone wrestling fan or not paying attention to that person. And that could be based on size or star value or natural charisma. Whatever they have some sort of magnetism about that did vince see that in bam bam and would he have seen it without the head tat. I don't know if you wanna see without the head tattoo. And i don't know that bam bam would have had the same swagger without the head tattoo. Frankly i think that that that it all kind of came together in a in a neat package in the tattooed probably gay bam bam some of that swagger in some of that strategy had naturally it is interesting to go back and think about what. If i mean in this era we should also mention. You've told us before that you guys guys were really looking for. Its baby territory. So there's a lot of other territories in the country that they wanted to have a heel champion and all the baby faces chase benson and even his father preferred a baby face champion taking on all comers a guy like bruno san martino and now it's whole cogan. Stern would you see a guy like bam bam bigelow at his height his weight and his agility but then as if that isn't enough the crazy head tat be just think. Oh man we sharpen that guy up and he'll be perfect for hogan on a saturday nights main event or whatever you're looking primarily for not necessarily your next hogan but who can hogan's next opponent be fair to say it is but but in bam bam in particular we were looking at you know holy shit. What an attraction. He can be sudan. Did you maybe face. Oh we didn't see him. Okay aren't that didn't see him as a heel saw him as a huge baby face okay. Storyline begins july twentieth on prime time wrestling. Where bobby heenan is doing commentary. And he claims to have signed bam and then jimmy hart in an insert during a honky tonk man match claims to have signed bam bam and then mr fuji during a demolition match the next week we would see he signed bam bam and then johnny v does the same routine during an islanders match and in fact slick molin been reading the dirt sheets it's a nice storyline versus if you just pay for a little bit. Why it's a nice way to say. Hey all the heels wanna manage this guy and that just really lays out really a different time in wrestling. It felt like every major. He'll.

Not long after this hunter is going to acquire the services of mr hughes as a heater. I did mr hughes come into play. Well it's just a casting. I think he was fresh imposing looking big guy and he filled the role. You wanna you wanna bodyguard kinda guy. The heater is a bodyguard. He's a he's a. He's a an asset that recipe us when when times got tough and challenging the cabela's ass out and Encouraged talk he just had to be big and impressive and he was and he's gone on to train a lot of really good talents and he's got a wrestling school there in atlanta and Ice kiddie time. He played defensive tackle for kansas state. At that time they weren't good. of course. i reminded me of that every day. Because my centers are doing pretty good they so we we were calling kansas state so the while catch recalling the mile cats and he and i still laugh about that but he curtis guide. Funny story about curtis after wrestlemania nine. I think we're in such televisions we were in the departure lounge phoenix not setting their five back to connecticut do voice-overs so forth senator. Talking with the chief jay strongbow his wife who they're the wrestlemainia festivities and a chief elbows. Look at that. Just look at that across the way the side of the the aisle so to speak was mr hughes honestly share and so strongbow automatically assume that curtis had been partying and still high where we found out later on curtis had The sleep disorder where he could fall asleep in anywhere he had narcolepsy. Yeah and and and thank you. And i can spell that for god's sakes but he. He couldn't wait to tell vince so you know. What are you gonna check into this right now. Did i talked to curtis. and i don't think he even spell narcolepsy. He had it and but he did. He was never an issue ever So anyway this little stories like that pop in your head. You're thinking about these things but he's the initially. I thought it was a nice element again. Triple h being willing to get out of his tales. to go from the female accompany of ballet type thing to Mr hughes var from sexy females. You get probably And willing to try different things to improve Triple h his game. This presentation and a lot of guys like i said earlier. They just wouldn't do it. Their ego wouldn't allow them to do it. They weren't willing to be bold and try new things but he was always willing to do that. And i think as time went on those type. Things pave the way for his hall of fame career. Well we're gonna finish up in puerto rico and little. Do we know that china is about to debut and change his career in so many ways i guess life too i mean nineteen ninety seven is going to be a breakout banner year for owner hearst. Helmsley he's going to have featured programs he's gonna get you know. of course. the association with china is gonna win the king of the ring. Dx is going to be created and man. He is off to the races. And that's about the time we got rid of that three year contract and redid another contract. Pretty remarkable yeah. Well that was. That was things that i did into town relations. That weren't normal courses of business or you would say well. We got to get this guy to finish his contract. Then we'll do some for him. See i. I always thought that was not why not do it now. Right and This is four it he just. That's not something that we customarily done. That's why on i started. We started this podcast. They ask are always vividly. Remember sitting in that case in the back of that arena in evansville which was exactly the garden in a new contract now. He's validated now. He knows how badly he's wanted. And maybe more importantly how much she's valued as a main event level guy. And i'm not talking to him about that is biggest concern. Seem like his biggest concern was am. I getting the best deal. Am i at the level that you guys are saying that i am and that puts me on a par with austin and take her and all these guys making them a million dollar the the irony of that deal. Is it most of the guys on this million dollar downsides and they were healthy and they're getting booked a lot businesses was what it was sometimes. Great sometimes you know solid Was that you know he he. They didn't take the weekly checks so in other words if you divide a million by fifty two that's nineteen change a week and a lot of guys didn't take their that that guaranteed check so at the end of the year that you know. You're not making any sense. Do you run soon? Do you replace Hulkster Rock flare or stone cold with anybody? Um, How about Chief Jay Strongbow? You're getting stupid now, Now, you You have a question for me. I'm keeping McConnell on. He's been here 30. Some years he started nine AM to noon started that didn't exist before he began it. Secondly, he's a wonderful morning guy. I think a lot better than Jim Scott ever was. All right. Here is my question. I saw this on reddit over the weekend. I'm a big reddit guy was asking the following and all acted to you if you could pair up any pitcher in major league history versus any hitter in major, like history that never faced each other. For one dramatic at bat. Who would you want pitching to which hitter and why? Would take Randy Johnson against Babe Ruth. Who? How about that Now? My all time Starting pitching staff are Sandy Ko fax Randy Johnson. The big train. Walter Johnson. I throw in Roger Clemens and Bob Gibson knows my five men. I would take Babe Ruth versus Shohei Otani and let them each pitch against each other. What about that Because there was no better pitcher in baseball and Babe Ruth. And Otani right now, there might be no better picture. I mean, that will If you realized last week, he had a week, where he hit six home runs and won a game on the mound. He had elite He's tied for the major League League in home runs with 23. Last week, he won a game, pitching six innings, allowing a run and hit homers in five different games last week five Can I give him my all time starting baseball team? I'm sure you are. First base, of course, is Number four of your New York Yankees. A man named Garrick Hmm. Second base, Rogers Hornsby. Shortstop. A Rod. Third base pie, Traynor. Left field. Babe Ruth at center field. Willie Mays right Field, Henry Aaron behind the plate bench and backing them up. Would be, uh Hug. Hey, You know what I've got? If you have 30 seconds, I have a tremendous Johnny bench story had never heard that I found today You're ready for this. Please continue to do it. I do it on the state in rich history. Every day On this date, 1966 schedule Page was signed a pitch for the red class 18 the Peninsula Peninsula. Grey's class a ball. It was a promotion applied by the owner in the minor Lake city to get fans. Satchel Paige pitched that night. The last game he ever pitched. He threw two innings. The Web starting catcher should have been was Johnny Bench, but he was not the lineup that night and did not catch Satchel Paige. How about that for a story? This 1966 you know, that's pretty good right there. Bench was 18 years old and got the night off did not catch Satchel Paige and his two innings for the graves that night. Should Amir Garrett be sent down the billings or Reds? Baseball heaven, which to facilities? What best? How's the talent of a mayor Garrett, who has disappeared. He clearly needs a side pressure to bullpen with you. Let's let's do this again in 70 games. Is there a podcast available of all your Mount Rushmore as I could go back and listen to You know, that's a great idea. I'm going to get my Mount Rushmore is together and put it on my podcast. Would you like that? I am nothing If not an idea, guy, Willie, you make Jim Scott seem exciting. Are my services done? Just like a hooker. Thank you very much. 700 WLW.

"Development of personality in wrestling. Well i mean. I really didn't You know gear myself off other guys. I didn't bounce off anybody else and go the opposite direction. I kind of like had if few favorite wrestlers and there were certain things pick up on the day with do but they wouldn't drive the point home you know and there were certain else was. It was say certain things but they wouldn't make it mean anything. And i just tried to take all these good things that i could see in these characters that were positive wrestlers like different guys like would say certain catchphrases are different. Guys would walk a certain way the ring but they wouldn't deliver it you know or they would one hundred ten percent so you know if i've turned side was flex mark instead. I can pull the bumper off a cadillac jack. I would say it. Just draw bullet on camera. So that you would remember that for the rest of your life and i kinda stole a little bit from a bunch of wrestlers and mixed it with my own personality. And that's how. I came up with the hulk hogan character. Some of the other guys. You know they kinda go with the natural flow. Some like chief jay strongbow. He was a native american indian. Just kind of went with what he was not work. We only have about a minute before we have to break here. But i remember conversation that the last time we talked and i asked you off the air. It took you to get out of bed. You said sometimes it took you twenty minutes. And i'm just wondering about the physicality of the sport. How as you developed over the years how you handle that aspect of it got a knee replacement hip replacement and i guess. Both of my hands have been numb now for probably about twelve years. Was that old school mentality. you know i. I kept work wrestling way. Beyond the a lotta time. I should have wrestled and you know the new guys now. Their little finger goes down. They take six or seven months off and neck surgery. But i mean now getting out of bed. it's It's an effort at discovered a brainy anti-inflammatory called arthotec that basically is heads and tails above viaducts. But it does take a while to get out of bed. Because i probably wrestled too many years in too long. Was it worth all of. I've always talked to athletes and not one is ever told me it wasn't well looking back now. It was such a great career and such a long ride on top. I mean i saw you know. I can't even think i saw all you know. Madonna rise and fall a couple of times. Michael jackson had his eyes and was as far as being a main event guy. But i became a main event guide. I stayed on top for twenty years. And when i look around at my family and the security they have I don't look at the negatives that's just the cost of doing business. That i get out of bed a little slow but the security businesses give my family. It made it well worth it. Show sports byline. Usa here's ron bar. Cogan inducted into the wrestling hall of fame is joining us here. On sports byline hawk the techniques that developed how has that changed over the years. The wrestling moves. You had your own leg drop as kind of a signature wrestling move. How did that develop in. What about the moves over the years how they developed in wrestling. Well i mean you know if you basically hit somebody over the head with a steel chair. When i was wrestling the rest of the referee would either ring the bell or the rest of that you hit with a steel chair would be knocked out Carried on a stretcher to the dresser. Now you know they'll pay the guy that had with a steel chair and by the time the guy throws the chair. The guy that was hit will be standing up before the turn around so the whole mentality of the business has changed a lot. I mean the wrestling holds. The guys are still using a lot of the wrestling holds. But everything has speeded up because television moves so fast there more choices in the universe as far as entertainment a few that you and i may have or a few that andre the giant i could have. I have an argument with andrea on monday. We probably wouldn't russell till six months later. But nowadays if you haven't andre a argument with andre the giant on monday you'll russell monday afternoon i mean and so they have to move the business along quicker because like i said there's some choice between reality. Tv cable and satellite and stuff. So you know that's changed and also that has changed the art form instead of telling the story painting the picture in creating emotions. I think some of these guys have basically Are compare it you know. They're they just repeat what they see and they don't they almost wrestle like robots. Sometimes they don't really russell like the rock or stone. Cold steve austin or some of these guys that still have a grasp on with this business is all about. Do you believe that. Today's wrestler is overproduced. Then that that really. They're a part of the production a wrestling rather than being the technical. The solid wrestlers. That you and others that You.

Even i'm breed. It's time to ask this question for my brother brandon. What was it like working for working for events you know he is e promoter. Extraordinary is the. He is the emperor as chief. Jay strongbow used to call him thing about vince. Mcmahon is the layout plenty of plenty of promises to a lot of people and then he would fall back on a lot of You know and i took it personally and other people took it personally but the thing in hindsight looking back years later i realized it's the entertainment industry you know you've got to be able to handle rejection and a lot of those guys. I'm sure it had handled many broken pro. I'm sure shawn michaels had broken promises in the past. I'm sure the undertaker probably had broken promises. You have to nada handle that stuff and i was not prepared to handle it so as to promote events was just doing what he does and i know a lotta guys were very bitter angry at fence and other people in that company but When i finally grew up and realized i was probably more at fault than those people. I realized this was just doing what any good promoted us. Keeping everybody happy as long as he can and in the most out of each of his guys and sometimes he would fall back on promises. That just happened. That's other business was so he was a shrewd businessman is what he was gonna take our last commercial break and we'll come back and finish up this interview duke and get into shameless plex.
