How Indigenous Musicians Are Using Song to Reclaim Their Identities
"Singer. Jelly wolf was raised as a jehovah's witness a community that had very strict rules. Jelly grew up. Not knowing her father. A survivor of the sixties scoop that saw tens of thousands of indigenous children from across the country taken from their families by the canadian government and adopted out mostly to non-indigenous families between the nineteen sixties and the nineteen eighties. As a child he was stripped of his identity. So jay le-. She grew up in what she calls. A doomsday cult raised as a jehovah's witness in a small town in bc. It wasn't until she was seventeen that she learned who father was and that he was indigenous. A member of the soto. First nation jamie's identity has shifted through the years the community she was raised in forbade engaging much with the outside world let alone making music so she left to discover who she really is and pursue a life of self expression. Daily wolf joins me now from her home in toronto gaoli. Welcome to the show. Thank you so much for having me. So that song that we just heard child of the government it centers on the trauma. Your dad and family experienced in the sixties scoop. You wrote this incredibly personal song about him. But what did you know about who he was when you were growing up. I didn't know much. I knew that will. I thought that he was of mexican descent and my mom told me that. He struggled a lot with addiction issues and that was all i knew of him And then being in the religion. I didn't just never really thought to. I don't know reach out. I saw him one time on a street. Actually and i was just walking down the street with my grandmother. And my just kinda of looked like. Oh wow i remember disturbingly. You know who that was and i was like. Yeah those my dad. And i've never seen a picture of him or anything so it was really the only thing i knew my dad. I saw him once he dark skin. I thought he was mexican and he struggled. That's all. I knew

"I'm thinking about like when they went to chicago. And i think samson had to start. And i think like three starters in gray chicago's ingred team but they raised chicago out at the gym carson tasks. And then you don't see garcia center three four five games and you know and sometimes not jay le- not not often but every now in teaching get some of the minutes in here near santa pretty much supplanted immunization but i thought samson's energy even undersized it's a classic case of sampson saw sides you can't play him for twenty five minutes against an mvp but you you can get away with a three or four minutes spurt where your pay. You got him on the floor with aaron holiday inn. Doug mcdermott is on. The other side is on the weak side of the floor run off of screens drawn defense because his three point shooting jakhar sampson's slashing to the rim an aaron holiday disproportionately just opens the floor. And you have of all of this movement. If that minutes you can end up. Turn a five point deficit into a ten point lead and then you might have to pull him. Because you know you can't have in play against a guy like in beat in the low post. Play after play off the play when the plate when the game slows. Now i think that's where your car samson is so valuable. He gives them energy in that case and there is this kind of pep in their step. That the team seems to have never samson is on the floor. I mean i think last year was against boston. He had two consecutive thunderous dunks. One of them often offensive rebound on one hand. Put back in the next time. I think it was a similar play like. That's the kind of stuff. Jakarta sampson does to energi up. And and i think he's the backup big even though he's not really a big is more forward i like the kind of pace that he greens in that. He gives him more more that in say turner or bonus because he can get up and down the floor and i think he really flourishes would that fast paced style basketball detroit and maybe he could kind of be play with turner on the second unit where they've really struggled with rebounding and physicality and allow turner's spacing takata. Let him be the center on offense and then he can do samore switching and mucking things up defensively next to turner because they've really struggled with turner as the loan. Big these last couple of years whereas the savona spoke is second units Have always been really good. And you know the handoff game with mcdermott and lots of spacing letting so bonus go. Eat in the post and and be the hub so that they could could give a try to Anything you see is like a big strength of the team that we haven't hit on ya. I think they have. You still have bonus you can still play through. I don't think they're gonna place through the post with the way they played with macmillan which is basically give to onus lamb. Go one on one and just kill you choose which you know obviously if all you need is two points i guess you on your credit card game for that. I think you're gonna use suppose more position to set up gas threes into because he's such a good passer. I think as assistant on my. Here's five game last year. Which is pretty good. I wouldn't be surprised. His his assist numbers went up. Maybe his points come down a little bit but his assist numbers go up somewhat because they can use him as a hub to be the shooters in some this off ball movement. They're hoping to create to get more layups in open. Three point shots. I saw. I still see some bonus. His ability and make other guys better is still shrimp. Now is he still going to be all star bonus based on the way they play. I don't i don't know maybe some of those numbers across the board can take a hit except for exists But he can make some other guys better on t. but i i think that's a strength and you just mentioned mcdonagh in action. Admit to mentioned him earlier. And if you want to see how important the bonuses to doug mcdermott look at mcdermott in restart in the playoffs without bones. Night and day cous turner's handle inability distribute wasted. Bonus does out on that floor especially the high post isn't as good because he can't really doesn't handle boswell into bonuses ministry and they're just a little bit symmetry of an and you really have an option when you played at hand off game between simone. Mcdermott you have the option of the ball getting back inside to so bonus where you can post up your getting these two where you don't really have. That option is shown with miles. Turn and they kind of sell out. Run running the so. I think i think doug mcdermott success. In his efficiency last year was so tied to sa- bonus. You couldn't get you know that. That was very clear. the inter in restart So yeah i think so. So the strength of the team look we. Have they have shooters. We don't talk about brogden having to get off the ball a little bit more. I still think justin holiday had a career year shooting the ball three. I think turner's can have a better year shooting the ball from three. How much better. I don't know. But i think he may get closer to thirty seven to thirty eight percent. Range of this is a three point shooting team of course. I guess we'll eventually get to week but the you know the question is is this team going to be athletic enough in have the quicken triggers to kind of get off some of the shots You know the one thing that that that that's been their kids heels. You know is shooting team discipline. They are in so many ways. They're not necessarily the most athletically gifted team from top to bottom they. Just don't have that one star that you need on the prisoner if you just look at who. Their best player is compared to some of their competition in the eastern conference that that player is not as good that ultimately is probably why you'd have to have them. You know more in that second year of the east where they've been at for seems like quite some time now and look there. They gotten better at least not being able to use just holiday. Tj warren of wing In in those sorts of things but yet that they're not they haven't been the last few years they haven't been very athletic they have been very long In a lotta ways in. It's you know in last season. I thought you saw more so than anything else. We talk about weaknesses in this was a team that was defined by its defense. Nate mcmillan in for me. That was the most disappointing part of of this entire team last year. I thought defensively. They were by large terrible most a lot of time. I most time and the tough statement for a team. That was the six six rank defensive. People might be like six of defense. How can you say that. But you feel that. They still underperform their potential. You look at the way. They played against the better teams. Defensively in key. situations Yata they were very good. And when i say that they had to junk up let let's put. They had damper whose defensive coordinator last year. They made a lot of adjustments to the defense. Once we got around the all star break where they stop ice and ball screens. The their inability to defend the slot cut alone was in theory Teams lived off of layups because they couldn't defend slot cuts. it was. It was unbelievable how bad they were doing. The dribble penetration they routinely gave up by the guards. I mean this is. This is pretty older depot coming back.

"BACK Sam has survived for eighty two years through two major international wars and massive technological and economic changes all under the leadership of the Lee family, but the last decade has been a rough one, I the company into a high profile seven year legal battle with apple apple claimed Samsung has illegally copied and operating system. It says it pioneered in iphones and IPADS, it seeking two and a half billion dollars in damages. Before settling out of court, Apple and Samsung, spite snowballed into one of the biggest patent suits on record. Then, of course you'll remember the galaxy note seven. That's the one that exploded the galaxy note. Seven is dead and Samsung is in a disastrous situation. The car, the note, seven burning and exploding cars, homes, and at work, unlike burst in and then There was smoke everywhere. Samsung was forced to do to recalls. After devices around the world started spontaneously combusting, they were eventually banned by US airlines, and the company was reduced to a punchline in the twenty sixteen news cycle, I have a special message for anyone watching tonight. Show on their Samsung Galaxy note seven. Run for your lives. There was some pranksters who released the grand theft auto MoD and this was a famous model at the time, but you could actually go into shop in this video game, and by these explosive galaxy note seven, and then hurl them at cars and seven blocked police. All this they were like grenades, but neither of these public relations ordeals hold a candle to what happened next, because now Samsung's leadership and the future of the lead dynasty, it was all writing on a few horses and the witnesses that is set to testify today. Come from the horseback riding community. That's right in two thousand seventeen lead the chosen one was arrested and put on trial for bribing a close friend of South Korea's president with that trio of horses, rousing Seo and Vitton remember them Samsung provided navy seven million US dollars to John's writing training and was allegedly planning to give an additional nineteen million dollars. So, let me go back a couple of years to try and explain what happened in two thousand fourteen after his father ICAN he was hospitalized. Jay Lee did not win control of Samsung to try and fix this. LE- along with other company executives took a series of steps that raise some eyebrows and the latest industry news at two major units increase the biggest conglomerates Hudson group. Group have announced a merger. Samson would say that. These mergers and share sales are actually to consolidate business units. But if you look at what's being consolidated, it'll be like the theme park company is being consolidated with the construction company and the fashion company and it's like. Why do you need a company? That does those three things, and it's to put Jae Lee in power the. The merger drew the attention of Samsung Sheriff holders who had vote on whether or not to approve it a US based Hedge Fund known for its aggressiveness got involved, and soon the whole thing devolved into an all out war for votes between those shareholders who opposed the merger and Samsung and Samsung did not want to lose. They went to all kinds of small time shareholders and And give them cakes and watermelons and fruits and tell them that Samson is the nation and you know we should support Samsung, because it's important for the future of Korea. In one day they put on just dozens of commercials and newspaper ads. They took out all kinds of magazine ads in Web ads and I remember I would turn on my TV and I saw the commercial. It would show all these Samsung employees. It will show like a factory worker, and then a construction worker and a shipyard worker, and their explaining to you why Samsung is so important in this merger must go through, so we employ the Korean people to please support US Samsung took other steps that gave its allies even more voting power at one point gain says south. Korea's equivalent of the CIA got involved spying on the opposition on the company's behalf. Samsung really wanted this merger to go through. And finally it did Tom's Hong groups of founding family victorious over US Hedge Fund Elliott Associates says shareholders vote in favor for the merger of two Samsung affiliates. Even, after all of that, though Jay le- still do not have enough shares to take over control of the family business. And before he had a chance to make another move, a huge scandal erupted that gripped. It connected this merger with the impeachment of the country's President Park Guen Hey. The moments of president was ousted. Don't ahead of south. Korea's highest court says president. Park committed a grave breach of the law. A major Korean broadcaster discovered President Park wasn't really running her government. Instead it was being controlled by a close advisor in confidant on who not only did not have an official role. She was the daughter of a Korean cult leader. This revelation sparked the largest protests in South Korea's democratic history. Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets President Park's approval ratings fell to four percent, and in the midst of this political crisis prosecutors revealed that Samsung had provided the money to buy the horses for the president's confidante. The horses were for her daughter in return. The adviser along with the president would direct the country's pension fund to support Samsung in the merger that helped Jay LE- consolidate power. We reach out to Samsung for comment on these allegations. It did not respond. It's a it's a rabbit. It's a bizarre story. It's one of the weirdest stories I've ever covered as a journalist. All of it. The horses watermelons spies. It was all done to pave the way in the very complicated transition of Samsung from father to son unfortunately Gaoli. He was found guilty of bribery and embezzlement and sentenced to five years in prison. But, then a familiar refrain, he served one year in prison, and then he went to his appeal trial, and actually the judge let him out, so they upheld part of his bribery charge, but then it was the same thing again. This is when that pattern kicks back in, and they said. You're still guilty, but you're free to go because we're GONNA, Lessen your charge. The Prosecution Appeal and South Korea Supreme Court ordered a retrial that could result in more jail time for J. Lead in the middle of all of this there is one gigantic unanswered question. Who's going to run? Samsung now remember jellies. Father, who still chairman hasn't been seen in years, conspiracy theorists believe he's already died as for Jay Li. The widely held assumption is that he'll take over Samsung. Sunday after this blows over, but what happens after that is unclear. What is Samsung if the Li family is not as actively running in? Without the family that's like it's like removing the core. It's like removing. Purposes of their existence. I think that a lot of Samsung executives can imagine a Samsung without. A family member at the helm in the confusion of the past couple of years. How is the company doing? It's actually It's been doing quite well so in two thousand Seventeen Samsung overtook. Apple is the most profitable tech company in the world, and this was as the Air Jay le- was sitting in jail, so everybody sitting there wondering okay well. If you're doing this well, and you're pushing the South Korean stock market to record highs Why do you need this air? Who is sitting in jail right now? What purpose does he serve?.

"Said he said the line. You did the whole truth. That's another way that we can remember what happens in this episode. Jack says the line all truth. It'd be very complicated if he said in a different episode. Yeah so the whole truth. It's so exciting. Mazal Tov to to sign and even Jack Cater able to have some semblance of peace. Even though Kate then tries to like segue the conversation away from everything like so. What's up in the hatch? Is Everything okay? At least Jack is able to talk to her like a quasi human rights right. Yeah sure everything's fine there exactly at my son's a bit of a buffer there as well. I think Jack. Choice of phraseology is interesting. We know that son speaks English. I don't know if jay LE- toddler to speak Hebrew Mazal Tov means. Yeah does he actually say Mazal Tov? I don't maybe I don't know that he's maybe maybe it's a bit of a Mandela Fan. I think I think it's just that I have in my notes. Mazal Tov and so I I said Mazal Tov. Maybe now say like. Can You Match Jack? Sheppard saying Mazal Tov. Just doesn't seem like a live and it's GonNa come from Jack Sheppard All right so there's a flash back and son is she's very pensive and she's thinking back on everything and Julius why are you? Why are you so nervous? What's wrong what's going on and it's because she's going to run away. Learning English to run away We were going to have a kid Jinnai but we can't and we thought maybe that would save everything but it won't so I'm Outta here. Peace and out and Jay's don't run away from your life it's not. It's not the not the thing to do. You can't just run away but I'm also not saying stay for Jin. I'm saying you should start an affair so there's an interesting statement at the beginning. This scene when son says like basic like. I'm glad I can't have a child. Is it just because that she realized that like if the baby would be the only reason I jin engine would stay together that that's not a reason to do it? It was like a surprisingly bitter sentiment coming from this character but considering the position that she's in and especially like the temperament which which she takes to the airport at the end of house and the rising sun. I feel like that makes a lot of sense. Yeah I think like also like the level of the quality of the fight that she had and like the like the really disgusting behavior from Gin in the Office of how he reacts. In that moment. I think combine that with the fact that she's already both fearful of him and also like I don't know who you are anymore him with the blood on his hands and everything. I think it's like I'm glad that I can't have Jin's kit. And this is like a sign to me that like. I just need to like my instincts of learning English. So I could leave. Were correct and I do not just like reclaim control over my life and Jay is basically being like. Oh yes. Sure re-claim control for your life a hundred percent me. Yeah and I think it's fine. I mean I think it's it's great. Is that ideal? No but in this moment son is clearly not in love with Jin Anymore. And she's clearly falling for this guy and this guy has gone for her too. Yeah I think that you know maybe in a perfect world. He'd be like great. Let's run away to America together. Like I know how to navigate that country but I guess if he is the son of this hotel magnate seemed like he was welcome back into the family with open arms after his trust. He doesn't want to necessarily ruined that he's saying like you don't have to blow up your life to change it like you don't have to like run away. That's not something that you have to do. Running away as such a drastic. Move up like what you're talking about doing is like completely absconding severing all ties with your life and your family and vanishing into thin air. You don't have to do that to change your circumstances. What he's advocate but I would also say guy. I'm not the expert on Korean culture but I do feel like you know getting divorced especially when you were the daughter of this big magnet would kind of up your life in a manner of speaking so I feel like even the process of leaving. Jin was still have significant consequences. So it's almost like shoud be making big reverberation no matter what it's rather. It's rather hurt. Keat like mentality of like. Let me run away from the possible situation. I'm facing right now. J. Liaise is sort of bristling against though again might be a bit of selfish reasons because he happens to be there from a writing perspective. It's also very interesting to sort of mirror. This scene to the first of the episode considering that this scene is vastly vastly in English with a couple of exceptions whereas the first scene is in completely in Korean. And it says that even though center speaking the same language in the first scene. They're not really communicating with one another and ironically enough as son learns a new language. She learns to be incommunicado with this guy more so than her own husband. I kind of think that if If Sun and Jin break up and then sun and Jae Lee become a thing that everyone's going to be like. Oh that's awesome great. Everyone's GonNa love that era. It'd be really into it. And if they're not a j Lee is like all right. Well then peace out. We're GONNA WE'RE GONNA Markle Harry. Away at this thing was going to say so is it. Sorta like a is it like a is gin the Jennifer Aniston. See the Jennifer. Aniston here where she's GonNa get with like a big big powerful movie star and everyone's like oh I love this couple and yes they might be scandalised by what happened to Jin for like a hot second. But then they're pretty much going to disregard him and focus entirely on Sunday and daily. Yeah I think that's possible. Also I do want to say that I just second guessed myself like it's Meghan markle not making merckel. I briefly thought about the universe. -Tarian Merck Laura thing my God talk about world peace EU. So I`ll. I'll remember this episode war for for that that Jay and son or like the Prince Harry and ongoing merckel Sideways Universe back on the island or their site and Anna. Charlier going are going to set up shop for the night in and is going to settle in next aside for a little bit of a fireside chat. Let's hear about it mine. Your body can. I can't see people don't like me. I've tried to get them to most of my life. I just gave up a while back. I mean I am what I am. You got a good reason. Hate me sorry. Sorry for what I did. Transportation people wasn't to kill Shannon. Who Stem wants we find out? He is one of them will have to be done like forcing him to eat. By shirt plan punishment. It was such a big Popeye Fan. I love this clearing the air between side Anna. The great seen really really good and again. It's sort of like we're noticing. Small interaction with Annalisa because her time is very limited on. This is very meaningful. Like we're talking about these waiting. Interactions between her finding him to him finding her to go out until the jungle looking. Rousseau's looking for you so I think there's these two are seeing eye to eye when it comes to their respective trauma when it comes to the others granted again. The the weirdly complicated aspect comes from the fact that the history but the others from one character's perspective comes from the fact that the other characters shot the love of his life thinking she wasn't other but he has talked about in our collision episode. He understands what it's like to do something absolutely regret and the the mental and emotional strife that comes from that damn saieed look so menacing when he says that something is going to need to be done about band when he's found out and it's just it's scary and this is Sii just when he's convictions are about him. That part of Sai that's stated he was a torturer back in one of them comes out and we see a glimpse of it here in the middle of the jungle. Yeah I think it's great because like I think this is all of this stuff is like it's it's more important in in the long haul for Saieed as a character that like this is showing him his potential as a human his his capacity for forgiveness for empty still his drive for vengeance. He's still very but how he's able to redirect that anger. I just think it's it's complicated stuff for him so I really like it here. What's also highly enjoyable? And this is something that I do. Remember very well about the site. Anna Charlie scenes together is that I remember every time that they have seen together where they hash things out in swiftly followed by like a morning after where we're like been awake all night. Just stare at Anna Apparent. I mean his. His advice was finally taken by. She does all asleep eventually. But it's just been sitting there like damn rock the entire night. Maybe he's like. Is this weird should I? It's a little weird. Yeah when you fall in love with your previous lover complicates this weird. Is this weird stretch. Could we make a ROM com this? It'd be a very dark ROM com Dr John. I will say really interesting introspection from an as well right because she much collision this one. The only people that she is coming clean with coming clean about how she feels about herself only previously was her breaking down to echo and the riverbank and the other forty eight days. And I mean her saying you know. People don't like her little. Meta I think I don't know if the writers purposely did that I don't know what they felt if they sense the reception behind analysts at that point but I think it's a bit reflective as to what both the eight one five and the audience was feeling about analyst Cortes at that point and lost sure yeah. I think that that's right. Starts Rain and as it's raining they find the clearing but the camp find the balloon balloons supposed to be here. We'll map is bullshit so don't be too you know lessons bad map So this is where the blue should be. I'm going to go back. I'm GONNA feed him. My Shirt Says No. We tracked all the way out here. We can't go back until we search a little bit more so sites as well. Search as thoroughly as you please yes. I is using a Christian hickeys breath. I search method. Let's divide up the clearing and hunt for. Yes yes yes. The next thing we see is a montage of just the island mapped out in all of its gradients. Back at the beach Jin who has been kind of alone this whole episode. We haven't really even talked much about. Jin is by the end of the beach and he is going to see Bernard doing some wacky stuff. He and Bruguera going to kind of have a conversation. And it's GONNA lead to Jin overhearing a conversation kind.

"Frisk. Meanwhile the Twenty Twenty. Democratic candidates delivering their closing pitches. Nevada voters. Thank you for being in this fight. I want to beat Donald Trump. And I need your help to do it. As the State's Democratic Party hopes to avoid the chaos that plague. The IWA caucuses revealing very confident. You know we've had our heads down working around the clock on the last three weeks and we feel very good very confident. Now as the Nevada Democratic Party is making preparations to make sure that everything goes smoothly over the weekend early voting is already underway. Here in Nevada ahead of Saturday's caucuses Wolfgang. I'm Jay LE- in Las Vegas. I'm Jay thank you very much also joining us from Las Vegas Right now Senator Sanders Campaign Senior Adviser Jeff. Weaver Jeff. Thanks so much for joining us. I just saw some of the attacks that Michael Bloomberg is launching at your candidate senator. Sanders is certainly going to have a target on his back after this latest polling showing his number one at least in this latest national poll. How cutthroat is this going to be on the debate stage tomorrow night? We'll look why don't think it's GonNa be cut throat but I think the voters are entitled to a vigorous discussion of the issues. We saw today learn something new about a Mike Bloomberg today. We learned that he said that. In order to defend defense spending we had to cut social security Medicare and Medicaid We learned that he thinks farmers don't have a lot of gray matter We've learned that. He's opposed the minimum wage as opposed raising taxes on the rich and on and on it goes stop and Frisk. Gentrification thinks that the ending red line ending redlining racist policies that kept credit black neighborhoods by ending that led to the Great recession we had in the two thousand seven two thousand eight time period. This is not in line with Democratic voters. And I think we'll get on that stage this week. People are going to be really shocked to find out what Mike Bloomberg is really trying to sell them just to point out some of those positions. You just spelled out. He said years ago and some of them. He's already apologized for you. Don't necessarily believe he still believes all those things do you. Well what the what you're telling me. Wolf is that he's changed on all those things that people really have to think about you. Know candidates can evolve on an issue or two or have a different way of looking at something over time but candid who is completely remaking himself so that virtually every position he's ever had he's now repudiating. You folks gotta worry about what they're being sold and I think they're being sold a bill of goods here and look the answer to truck trump's right wing. Reactionary politics is not a hostile corporate takeover of the Democratic Party or of the White House. That's not the answer is attacking Senator Sanders for how some of his supporters go after his critics online. That does that behavior reflect on sanders ability to bring the country together. You've seen all those reports I have and you know Wolf. As you know Bernie. Sanders has spoken out quite strongly against those few people online. Who are acting in a way that is that is offensive. A you know. He has told them he does not want them to be part of the movement of. Let's be clear. Those people aren't running for President Bernie Sanders and running for president and Mike Bloomberg is running for president and others are running for president. And I'll tell you Mike Bloomberg would much rather talk about a people online. Who are who are offensive then talking about his own record. That farmers don't have a lot of gray matter to do their jobs. I you know I think somebody who's grossly out of touch. With much of America one person who does appear to sympathize with Senator Sanders as president trump? But Watch what he said earlier today. Listen to this. It just seems unfair. What's happening Bernie Sanders to be honest with you? I watched it happen for years ago. It seems if being taken advantage of for years ago it worries some out there. Some voters that the president president trump seems to be so eager to run against Bernie Sanders. What does that saying? What do you say to them? Well what I say is look look at those private remarks. He gave to a group of funders when he thought no one was listening a where he talked about the danger that Bernie Sanders poses to his presidency. He knows very well that the working class voters many of them that he allied to and tried to tell them that he would be their friend He knows that when he's in a general election Bernie Sanders. Those folks are GonNa come home to the candidate who actually does give a damn about working class voters and that's not Donald Trump and frankly it's not Michael Bloomberg after the chaos of the Iowa caucuses. Do you trust the Nevada Democratic Party to deliver accurate results Saturday. Well we were just at a meeting with the Democratic Party folks here in Nevada a few hours ago going over there process. I needless to say a lot of us are concerned As I know a lot of folks in the media are as well we want to make sure that the will of the voters is accurately reflected in the voting results and those are produced in a timely manner. So you know. We're watching it as are a number of other campaigns. Frankly and I know the media is as well time will tell. Well we'll be covering and every step of the way on Saturday. The data is coming up. Jeff Weaver thanks so much for joining us. Thank you wolf We have a quick important programming note for our viewers. There are five presidential town halls coming up on CNN. Starting Tonight Bernie. Sanders is first at eight PM. Eastern followed by people to Judge Amy Klobuchar Thursday night at eight. Pm Eastern town halls with Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren coming up next more reaction to president trump declaring himself the chief law enforcement officer in the United States and issuing some high profile pardons and sentenced commutations including one for one time governor and celebrity apprentice contestant. The former presidential candidate who's running again this cycle. Here's Rick Newman senior columnist at Yahoo, finance Rick. What is your analysis? Find. Arrange going from Bernie Sanders. We don't call that socialism. We just call that more. Socialist. In other words, more government involvement in the private sector to solve problems. And then on the other end of the spectrum, we call that more capitalist. Those are candidates who prefer to find solutions are free market incentives has a pathway to solutions are still some still some government regulation that we're not talking about. I'm Randy and libertarianism here. We're talking about kind of pragmatic capitalism patient premarketing term, so. We candidates should. We gotta start figuring out who stands for. And that's what we're trying to do here. So who fell wear say in your spectrum? The obvious question. Bernie Sanders, the Kennedy gear among Democrats, I think that's not surprising very close to him. Elizabeth Warren, she ranks second service dinner, more socialist scale, and then we have right next to Elizabeth Warren. Also gathered Booker in Canada to I mean, if you look at what they support all of those candidates do support Medicare for all for example, that would eliminate the private health insurance system in favor of a single payer system completely run by the government the other end. Did you not surprising? But I think it's kind of interesting to actually put into practice among the more capitalist Democrats John Hickenlooper, the former governor of Colorado Jay le-, current governor of Wash-, Washington state governors, John Delaney. Who was a businessman who started and founded two successful companies ran for congress. Instead, I think three times in congress. So they represent the more capitalist end of the democratic spectrum, and they they don't favor Medicare for all totally government run single payer system. But they say, you know, we need to expand coverage to more people by using market incentives, and perhaps use government policy as mayor the backs fabric. The free market where you can. And then government, otherwise, we're speaking with Rick Newman senior columnist at Yahoo finance. He's written a piece of titled here are the most socialistic and most capitalistic Democrats running for president. Did you find that on some issues? Some of these candidates may be more left than on another issue. It's interesting. They remember these are we're not doing social policy here. So we're not getting into a portion or anything like that. We're just talking about economic issues, and for the most part, you know, these issues and for the most part, you know, these candidates one way or the other sort of area where it's fairly easy to really differentiate among candidates in so-called green, which is viciously sweeping climate policy that would basically establish did new government, bureaucracies that would really transform the transportation sector and the energy sector, and that has become a kind of a democratic Whitman cast, but not all Democrats favor that there are a lot. I shouldn't I should take. Some Democrats say I agree with the intent of the green new deal, which is to create a sense of urgency around doing something about global warning. This is not the right way to do it. I've actually covered there. So maybe more capitalist Rachel such tyrod policy, and that will be true things like carbon taxes were you basically put a price on carbon polluters pay attacks were you should pardon above a certain level. But then there's a market, and you can trade you can trade these pollution allotments. And that basically gives me. The company and to some extent consumers the right to either pay to decide to do something different. So you create a free market incentive to to cut pollution as efficiently as possible. So that is we're not saying that the more capitalistic approaches simply do nothing we're saying more capitalistic approach to what a real problems. And I'm I'm calling global warming a real problem. Employ market message and marketing, thanks Rick. Yahoo finance columnist. Rick Newman, fourteen minutes now after the hour on this morning..

You just mentioned Jaylen Brown Terry Rozier, those three players along with any pigs depending on who they're trying to get. I'm not talking about getting an all NBA first team guy. But what I'm saying is they need more size up front as an intimidating factor for people that drive they need more people that are going to slash and get to the foul line, which they don't do really well and also attacked the bucket. A lot more to get points in the paint. So. So this Celtics team Vegas still has them as a favourite to come out of the east them. I got the rap at the beginning of the season. I got the rows of commodities at the rap. Look must not be looking at the standings their fifth right now. Yeah. The well recently. I'm glad you brought that up because the next topic. We have a graphic that we'll tell you how those standings will change over. The course of the year can move or hit the brakes at the breaks eight to the graphic which I found fascinating. And we've got something like that here. The toughest remaining schedules. The thunder the Lakers the Mavericks, the nuggets and the timber wolves. That is interesting in the Western Conference because if you look at that the Lakers might not make the playoffs based on that the nuggets they might not be the number one seed at the end of the season based on that. And look at that the Utah Jazz have the third easiest remaining schedule. Interesting the jazz right now out of the playoffs Lakers in the playoffs that might change mister rose. This is one of those things that. It's relative because. You get a chance to get off to a good start. Normally if your schedule works in your favor. Yes. But halfway through the season. I caution you not to take that statistic that graphic and think is going to necessarily shift the standings. And here's what I'm gonna do. It is not necessarily about who you play as win. You play them number one number two. It's who's in uniform when you face them, therefore if you're playing against the timber wolves earlier in the year when they have issues with Jimmy Butler or whatnot. That's a good time to face them facing the Lakers, and they don't have LeBron James, right? That's a good time to face them. So I'm not going to acknowledge that the standings are going to be dramatically different based on remaining schedule. I is the Laker fans. And that's something that you really feel like you need. You know, I think sometimes people are programmed to believe things are taboo, dirty or whatever it is for whatever reason from my youth. And I think that's a conversation that you need because it seems like mentally there's some type of black with her. And why she feels like there's something wrong with it. And why she feels like it's disrespectful, and you need to get past that to figure out what the real issue is. You guys have been together for ten minutes. You already live together. Clearly, you feel very strongly about here. But clearly, this is something that's important to you. So I think you need to get past that instead of looking at this. As just a physical issue is probably a deeper reason why she feels that way and you need to tap into that. Now, if you guys aren't going to be sexually compatible, and you feel like that is your dealbreaker you have every right to let her know that. Did they actually listen or were they just going? Oh, let's hear what this lunatic has to say, which is how I feel like they would they would respond. They actually did listen because they're intelligent people. Right. And I said, you know, honestly from my heart. I love, you know, knew all my life. Dear family friends at your being to see you are not being told the whole story, and I made some point. And I'm telling you what our conversations have been. I mean, I haven't changed their political views or their, you know, I mean, I'm sure the way they voted or whatever. But I made some points to where now when we are discussing politics, they are so much more apt to listen, but it really kind of that bombshell. I dropped like you guys are being in the seat. I think they're really depends. I don't know if that would work with everybody, but it's worth a try, Katie. It's worth a try. We'll continue this conversation. I'm more inclined to think, you know, when when you start talking about when they start talking about Republicans being racist, sexist, just look at them and say when did I become a racist? Personally. When did I personally the person you've known my entire life? What what turned me into a racist? Ask them that question and see what happens because I've asked that question. This is what I get back. Oh, not you. I'm not talking about you. Well, you just said Republicans. Okay. So real quickly. You've you've been doing this for half an hour almost what's the best suggestion. That's that's come out of this conversation. I don't know if we have a best practices yet. You were gonna come in. And tell me yours you can come in. And we get back. We got people. I was say keep it going, and we're gonna talk about holiday food because people are going to change up holiday food. And I'm about to punch somebody. Do you still want that grandma's green bean casserole? I know my mom makes the best green bean casserole and not with the canned soup. She makes it all from scratch, and it will blow you away. It's so good. Anyway. What's coming? We've got a Denver Broncos player who's out for the season..

"Facetime with michael cohen it's interesting i'm jay that this person says michael cohen pop this head into one of those meetings over trump tower does all of this make things worse for michael cohen well i think we just want to be very careful about what we know and what we don't know yes we are told that michael cohen briefly popped into one of those meetings with the qatari delegation but for now that's kind of it i we don't know exactly what popped in means doesn't mean that he engaged in engaged with the qatari delegation in any real way if he did speak with them what was the substance of that conversation but wolf i think in the big picture at what is clear is that the name michael cohen continues to pop up in so many contexts as you know he is currently under a criminal investigation his records were recently taken by investigators and we learned last week that immediately after the election cohen made it his mission to sell his proximity to the president and landed a number of lucrative business consulting deals including with companies like at and t and some of those companies that signed deals with cohen a subsequently cooperated with special counsel robert muller a so the last thing that michael cohen wants right now is more attention and more headlines about himself and this latest meeting with the qatari investors is exactly that lots of questions to be answered right good reporting i'm jay thanks very much i'm jay le reported coming up there's more breaking news a federal judge just ruled on whether a special counsel robert mueller's case against former trump campaign chairman paul manafort will go forward stand by for details.
