"Smell test for week. Two of the nfl and week three of college fourteen plays could really set me back and have me and chase mode here early in the season. If this doesn't work out a maryland tries to make it three in a row tonight. I don't like the game either way from a betting perspective. I think it's an interesting matchup because after week one when when illinois a beat nebraska. I said i think bret bielema is really gonna turn this program around. And i think illinois is going to become you know a big time program in the big ten again. It's been a long time for illinois. But i think is really really good And i think maryland's really really talented Illinois after a beating a nebraska in their opener they Lost a utsa. Utsa was smell test. Pick and they got blown out by. Uva last week forty two fourteen. Maryland is a seven point favorites. And i. i don't like the game either way. This is a big test for maryland maryland. In that first year yet last year really doesn't count and locks first year two years ago. They opened up with a huge win. Over howard and then they blew out. Syracuse who was ranked at the time in maryland became a ranked team two weeks into the season and then they went to temple and had an early game at temple and lost an ugly game and that was a big disappointment because they're coming home the following week for a friday night game against penn state and it would have been two ranked teams and it already turned out to be one of the best tailgate scenes in in maryland. Football history for that penn state game a few years ago but it was also ominous that they had lost a temple on the road and penn state blew him out. Maryland went on to have a rough season in mike loxley year number one. Well this illinois game you know of reeks the same way. The temple game did not enough for me to put it in the smell test I love maryland's talent. I love the quarterback. I think they're a good team. I think they're going to be a bowl team this year. I think this is a very tight game tonight. i like maryland. Disfigure out a way to win. I'm certainly hopeful that that will happen. it's really important if they can get it. They have kent state next week and then it would set up potentially a massive friday night october first game against iowa who has obviously climbed way up in the rankings in iowa right now. has a chance to also to be undefeated they're ranked fifth in the a p the recent. Ap they have kent state this weekend in colorado state. So they're going to be four. Know if maryland could get to four as well They would be ranked at that point. Maryland would be i would think And so maryland is a ranked team. Would have you know a top five team in their building for a friday night. October first game that would be An incredible atmosphere If they get to that tonight's the key Illinois on the road illinois coming up two losses they're going to be Really roaring go. And i think there's some belief in bret bielema but after that win over nebraska two straight losses. I think maryland's gonna get the best they can get from illinois illinois got some injuries maryland Though has some real talent Especially on offense At wide receiver. With demons and ricky jared. And if you haven't seen leeann tongue bilo play to his younger brother. He's really good maryland's quarterback all right. That's it for the show back on monday with a complete whoa Recap of the nfl in college weekend and a lot more Enjoy the weekend thanks. Today's episode is sponsored by the nba. "Against baltimore. You know what's interesting about the whole mahomes tariq hill thing like the play last week. It's like a great throw. I mean he threw it just up in the air deep downfield. He's got the arm strength to get down there but the defenders against hill like you're completely discombobulated like if the defender turns around it might be an incompletion might be an interception but it's just amazing. Some of those plays that they complete. Can you imagine if you're the safety of the poor guy. I mean tyree kills a plays in the field and you got to know that the mahomes can throw it the length of the field. You gotta just keep running. And then he stops on. I'm all behind him a touchdown so that safety could do that. That's just a that's just school yard backyard. Schoolyard plays it's not kosher people. He can't coach that play. You can't coach play on defense. He can't coach at play on. That just happens only mahomes entirely. Kill up pretty much. Get away with that. Gimme a team. That you've been telling your friends out on the golf course This team's going to be really good this year. Nobody knows well. Obviously the raiders. I think the raiders can be a lot better but they do have a tough division. So i have to root for the raiders for your blood in this one. So yeah so the raiders. But i think it's always gonna come down to great quarterback. Play me last year. Playoff games josh allen. He played an mvp level yet. Aaron rodgers on the best yet. Tom brady And patrick mahomes. Those are the final four him. So i took the throne those four. There's going to have to be a quarterback step up to who that's going to be it Maybe baker mayfield You know obviously jameis winston. Everybody's high and him right now they're gonna have to be some. Maybe it's Kendall gra Murray at zone. So who knows maybe staffer of but somebody's gonna have to come up and step up and consistently play this position high level and then when it's crunch time in the playoffs Obviously somebody's going to have to do things that they haven't done in the past maybe garoppolo i dunno one more. I'll let you run. I really appreciate the time First time for you in a long long time not coaching not playing not being a part of a team. How are you handling it. How's.

"His power in speed are history. Yeah i mean they're they're you know when as you were saying that i was thinking of my favorite. Nba player is quite leonard. Kawhi leonard shoots at a very high percentage but it's a very flat shot but somehow it always goes in you know it's not the perfect yet. L. elevations on the stroke. It's a little bit flat but it just never seems to miss We're obviously talking about jay gruden so through two games clearly. The surprise so far about this team has been the two subpar defensive performances house. Surprised her you at that. And what do you think the issues are others. You know i. I don't know that's something you have to dissect with the coaches. I still think they're going to be a top notch defense when it's all said and done the edge russia's that they have We'll be problematic for defense. Moving forward With chase young and obviously sweating and pain down in the middle or still saw in that regard. I think there are some things in the secondary they pray gotta clean up But i still think playing The chargers week one. I think nobody has really given enough credit. The justin herbert is an outstanding quarterback and allen and that group off the player that they have that. They're going to be a problem for a lot of team. So i i. I shot back up and they still did pretty well against them. That after best performance Not terrible and then last week last night i think was a little bit disappointing. I think amount of yards. They gave up to the giant team struggled last week. I think that might be a concern. It is still early. There's fifteen games for these guys. I still think they're a top notch. Defense they gotta clean some things up and coverage and.

"Post office again joining us now on the podcast for the second time he joined us. I don't know six months ago or so The head coach of the washington football team jay gruden. And you know thinking about you and having you on the show today on a friday following thursday night national game. So i figured you would watch it because you're not watching every game at the same time on sundays which i have a feeling you might be doing but i will ask you here momentarily. What how. You're spending your sundays now. But i'm assuming you did watch the game last night so from a coach's perspective if somebody and let's call that somebody another coach that really knows football called you up this morning and said what happened in the game last night. Tell me what happened in the game. Gimme a few minutes on the game. How would you describe it. I'd say what. I think First of all washington's quarterback play his butt off for not having a lot of training camp. I can say minner take gentlemen defeated. I think back and forth and you'll jones at the with the greatness in that game. He looks like he's getting better and better as the weeks. Go by so what everybody thought was going to be. A defensive battle actually turned up pretty good offense of football and of course in a heated rivalry game comes down to a player to at the end of the game and it was this beautiful but it was an offsides and they feel game over so Very exciting to watch surprising to watch without much of the fireworks. There were but a great team at at is washington football.

"Gonna keep them in the pocket and see if he can complete pass after. Pass after pass you know in front of our you know zone coverage with soft coverage Pretty much everywhere Then then let him do it. And then we'll try to tighten up in the red zone. I still think that forty six to twenty two and a game. That's you know back and forth. Not you know you're down by two scores and you're throwing to try to get back into it because it's late I didn't think gibson got enough. A runs in the game That is the penalties once again. Nine penalties eighty yards not good Some of those penalties You know obviously hurtful In terms of the unnecessary roughness the The p. is on on fuller and collins. And i think there's one other one i think jackson had one as well Several of them were on third down so washington now in two games has seventeen penalties into games. Fortunately their opponents have a bunch of penalties to last night. The giants had eleven. Although i think that holding penalty Was bullshit. i i really did. I thought i thought jones by the way was incredibly impressive in the game I thought his running ability his read option runs. I thought he threw it well. I thought he played very smart. Situational football those two third longs when they were out of field goal range. She made a throw to get him into field goal range. He made a run to get him into into field. Goal range I thought he was a very very good Last night Okay lastly A couple of other observations. First of all how that graham gano. Wow what a player you know. I mentioned the turning point in the game where they got knocked out of field goal. Range actually guinot has the range from where they you know. After that sack i think it would have been about a fifty six yarder. He kicked in the game A fifty five yard He remember he kicked for washington. Pack you know In twenty ten and eleven something like that was their kicker. He's gone on to have a fabulous career as a as a kicker five for five last night including that fifty five yarder late in the game which gave them a six point lead which also came. After the slayton drop touchdown pass that would have given the giants a thirty to twenty lead with five with about five and a half six minutes to go in the game. That could have been a true death-knell but graham gano Gave him that. Six point lead He was terrific and hopkins. He missed the kick. We would have been in here calling for you. Know eddie. pineyro to be the kicker against buffalo but he was three for three or two for two going into that kick he had made a forty nine yarder in the game He had made a thirty seven yarder in the game that he missed the forty eight yard but made the forty three yard. After the offsides against dexter lawrence on there was a situation in the game. that I think many of you thought Ron rivera aired Not going for fourth and three when they were down twenty three to seventeen. It was about nine minutes to go in the fourth quarter. Twenty two seventeen. He's facing a fourth down in three at the giant nineteen yard line. I didn't have a problem with that. I mean you can hit me with all of the fourth down analytics. You want You know urine a game where you know it's score to score. They're kicking field goals. You're kicking field goals. You're gonna cut the lead to three. You're gonna get the ball back again. Maybe it's after another score and it might be a devastating score. It might be thirty two twenty because the giants might get a touchdown and sure enough slayton drop that passed. That could made it. Thirty to twenty but I in context washington at that. Point was like three for eleven or three for twelve on third down. So you know. Ron wasn't very confident. I don't think in their ability to get fourth in three If he'd gone. I wouldn't have had a problem for it. I think it was very much a fifty fifty thing in a feel thing for him. Did he have the right play. Did he feel like he had the right situation. To make a fourth and three and remember even if you make a fourth and three there there's no guarantee that you're not going to be kicking a field goal three downs later anyway but either way i was fine with the decision In that particular spot it made it twenty three to twenty. The giants then drove back down the field slate and drop the past but they a field goal twenty six twenty and then obviously the two throws To mckissick and to ricky seals jones gave him the lead. By the way. I think One of heineke most important throws was on the final drive of the game when they were in very long field. Goal range With the clock. I thought they manage the clock very well. Net final drive. god aikman. Buck were a little bit panicked like they weren't. I thought they were totally fine. In their pace on the final drive they just needed field goal. Range you know this is why judge handled it so poorly on his end. Way too conservative But i really thought they handled it. Well they called the time outs exactly the way you wanted to call the time out. She didn't want to call them too early. He didn't want to end up kicking a field goal and thirty seconds remain on the clock. They handled it very well But i thought that the key throw they were at the giant.

"For the sake of getting him out of owning the team of putting off putting out enough negative press that he sells. The team that he's loved and also mangled to pieces. So will he go? How ugly does this get in public? Does any other information come out? Will the NFL at some point step in and actually decide to force him out? Even if he doesn't want to go? There's a lot of ugly things happening here with Washington and as you pile, all of it up You just got to go. You know, Ron Rivera is amazing. Like that's the biggest takeaway here is this ugly is Dan Snyder is with all the things that he's done. What's happened under his watch all the things that he's messed up our G three the way that Jay Gruden was playing him when he had the messed up knee. They forced him to play his rookie year, and he got hurt, even though they knew the knee was loose. They wanted him to be in the playoff game. He got injured. If you remember that he got hurt the next year. I believe in a preseason game like there's just dumb stuff. That was happening with RG three, and that's one of the many pitfalls of the dance Snyder era. So for Ron Rivera, who's dealing with cancer To come into that team and make them respectable and beat Pittsburgh and being the lead for the division and get a likely playoff game for him to do that, with all of this kind of stuff going on in a pandemic shortened off season. That's unbelievable. Like Ron Rivera. He's not going to win Coach of the year, but he deserves a lot of votes. He really needs to be in the conversation. I don't care if they're you know, whatever the record ends up being at the end of the season. They've got like six wins right now. But He's incredible. He's one of them. This one of most impressive coaching jobs I've seen Amazing. So credit to Ron Rivera. Now let's go. The phones were quick. Let's go to Dan, Who's in Atlanta? Daniel on CBS Sports Radio. What's up? Redskins introduce Ron Rivera as head coach

"The redskins officially named Ron Rivera their new head coach yesterday. Washington Fire Jay Gruden on route. Two a three and thirteen season the Redskins have not won a playoff game since two thousand five. That was when Joe Gibbs was their head coach Washington looking for some of the stability ability that Rivera brought to Carolina. The Panthers never won a title. They did reach the playoffs. Four Times under coach Rivera including a super bowl trip in two thousand fifteen. The redskins last made the Super Bowl in nineteen ninety-one and in a matter of moments the redskins will introduce Ron Rivera as the new head coach. You can see see. They are getting ready now in the nation's capital and as we wait for coach Rivera. I'll ask you this. What do you want to hear this afternoon? I think from Ron Rivera. I I just want to hear why he was attracted active to this job. Several Head coaching vacancies out there. And and why he took this job and and presumably so quickly when there could be potential other openings out there even in Dallas as we wait for that one and then secondly I wanna hear his evaluation or just thoughts overall Dwayne Haskins in what he might be thinking with regards to the offensive coordinator position. Since we're thinking that he's going to interview the current Guy There Kevin O'CONNELL and and You know what he might be looking being out of the coach from nap position. If he doesn't go with the guy who's currently their jobs I think the the the maturation process of dwayne Hassans is important for this football team. And I think that's the number one issue for Ron Rivera. Moving forward is how do I get my quarterback if he feels doing Haskins is indeed his quarterback How do I get my Guy Ready? Ready available with the right mindset because we do understand doing hasn't silly young player. So how do I get them in the right mindset to be successful in this football league and I'm a little sour about this. I'm a huge huge Ron. Rivera Fan. I sat with them while I was out. During my tenure with the giants was over and I was going to different Teams and sitting down with their coaches. He was the one that struck me. The most is just is a straight shooter. Honest about what. He does with his with his teammates. Everybody loves them. Teammates loving other coaches love. Him and I think he's walking to the podium right now. We'll take Noon I happy Thanksgiving everybody. Today's the beginning of a great new year for the Redskins Organization and its fans I I'd like to thank Bill Callahan. Those here five years did a great job for us a great guy and we really appreciate him with the Redskins have needed is a cultural change. Someone that can bring a winning cultural to organization at starts and ends with our head coach when looking for that man. I looked for a class. Act That's how you describe coach Rivera. He was two time coach of the year. And for those of you. That don't understand. That's very very hard to do. You should google that Because it's impressive oppressive He was fifteen to one which is extremely hard to do Did my research spend a lot of time talking a lot. Allow People A lot of coaches and one thing that came across certain words and these words. We're integrity honesty. Knowledge Grit determination. It's all about winning. Ron Rivera knows how to win as a player player as a coach as a new head coach of the Redskins. One thing. That's very very important. We're GONNA have one voice and only one voice alone and that's the coaches like to welcome. Ron's wife Stephanie. We've gotten over the last few weeks and our new head coach of the Washington redskins coach Ron Rivera. Thank you you know with about thirty days ago that your team. This team got me unemployed. So just so you know. We're good now thank thank you. It's an honor serve as a coach in the NFL. It really truly is their only thirty. Two of us at anyone given time and these jobs are scarce this one the Washington the redskins. This one is special. This is one of the almost original teams started in nineteen thirty two. There's a Lotta history behind football team in order for us to get back to where we WANNA be. We've got a study that history embrace it history and prepared a repeat that history because if not we're doomed to repeat the most recent history. We're not gonNA do that guys. We really aren't everything we do is going to be about winning. Okay we'll do things the right way and that's the only way we're going to do them because if it doesn't help us we're not doing it man that's just as simple as it gets. So why did I choose the REDSKINS. Probably the question. I know a lot of you guys are wondering that right now with everything. That's out there. I can tell you right now. All this talk about the money I want the money I'd still be out there trying to pick a couple teams against each other. I took this job for one. Simple reason one simple reason because because Dan Snyder came to me with a very interesting perspective for weeks he's explored the reasons why some teams win and some teams. Don't he told me. The common. In fact that transitional success of teams like the Patriots the Seahawks and the chiefs. Some of the other ones was that decision to take it and make a coach centered approach each not an owner centered approach or a team president or GM. Coach centered approach. I told Mr Snider that I appreciate the fact that he believes the head coach matters but I would be honored but under one condition it had to be a player centered culture a player center culture. Something I truly do believe in my responsibility to get the most out of the players to work with them teach them mentor them. Five five to one by one. I most certainly. We'll do it. I've done in the past and I'll do it again. I'll do what I can't help. These young men become not just the players we want but the men in the community we need. These are the guys that can help change things not just on the football field but in this world I really do believe that I was fortunate enough to have that in Carolina and I hope I'm a work to have it here. In Washington. Things will begin with one. Simple principle off discipline. I come from a military family. We're disciplined it isn't taught it's live. It's expected from day they won. I have a philosophy every player every coach everyone who works for this organization. They'll know what day one you're not gonNA play for this team. You're not gonNA work visist team if you don't have the discipline to give us everything. You have no exceptions no excuses. That simple guys. We have to hold each other accountable. That's something that we most certainly will do. We'll expect most from each other whether I was in Chicago Carolina with our very best when the players knew. Do the coaches had their backs. And this is the thing I'm going to ask from the players. Do it the way we teach you do it the way we ask you do it that way. The success will be yours. Okay you do it that way accessible be yours if you don't excess is going to be yours but it's not gonNA be right. Why because if you fail it's on you do it our way do it the right way and if we fail it's on me okay? It'll be on me. The head coach at simple. I truly believe that I ask of. You doesn't work I'm to blame. I told Mr Snider. I wanted to assemble coaching staff. That was truly dedicated. The players and teachers and teachers. Okay I don't have to have a great big names would have to have is great teachers. We want to teach these guys how to play football to the best of their abilities to the best of our abilities and also it'd be good quality young men off the field. I want players tough. Hungry will do whatever it takes to play redskin football fall in January and hopefully into February. I told him I wanted to work. Hand in hand with the head of player personnel could spot potential and others that even. I didn't see another didn't see. That's going to be important because it has to be a collaboration no matter who it is no matter. WHO's working with us? It has

"Said a lot of the line for some guys it's a difficult cuts the tension on this team in some interesting numbers to play I think wide receiver jumps out you know maybe running back to some degree whether you keep for you know who that fourth guy is do you believe that you know some I CP right to show you enough would you take a flyer on one of these younger guys a means of those kind of situations in the corners interior linebackers maybe may be a little challenging to and obviously some of the depth of the office a line seem to be the one areas that were all the numbers could be kind of finagle one or the other you can you can find a few different combinations well you're right I mean that that's what it gets down to is you know there's a few spots left at the tail end of a lot of these positions you know positional groups and at this point it's you know it I I would think that if anybody there's no way to really know what I mean like we can send out here they are also close look good but you never really know what that you know and see what the coaches there's more to it than what meets the eye I'm not I'm talking seven decide what goes on the field you have no idea how these guys approach to weight training what kinda attitude they have in the locker room I'll tell ya I personally believe they take all this stuff into consideration to see if they got the right temperament and I I got to believe that the very thing the first thing they look for a you know what how do you approach this what you know it's not you know can you run a four to forty two or forty pounds is your mind right you know like to have live right right and I think that that's one thing the public and guys like us look in in trying to figure out we don't really know how much that wave into everything but you know I mean my guess is for whatever reason talk about the running back position I think that A. P. right may have a little bit of a you know an edge on everybody because I think he might be that guy that it has a the right approach to football they've seen what the jeans and stuff if you have a particular coach if you go by what you hear and the Jay Gruden really likes him but at the same time this is the what is third year fourth.

The NFL's best and worst offensive arsenals: Barnwell's 32-1 ranking

"Barnwell writes these very lengthy pieces on E._S._p._N.. Dot Com and he wrote a piece that that came out early this morning ranking the N._F._L.'s. Goals offensive arsenals thirty two worst all the way to number one <hes> and basically you know he's considering how the players that the teams have will perform in twenty nineteen. He's not necessarily really just basing it off of recent <hes> recent performance. He's he's he's guessing on what you know. It will be in two thousand nineteen any says also that the as as a preface it with a lengthy the preview before he started ranking them of course in love with is that the arsenals are weighted <hes> the arsenal rankings are weighted more towards receivers than tight ends or running backs <hes> any says also the top elite level talent wins out over depth anyway the rankings start with the thirty second ranked offense of Arsenal Jacksonville Bennett's Denver Miami Seattle and then the Redskins so the redskins have the fifth worst offensive offensive arsenal in the N._F._l.. According to a bill barnwell any rights the investments Washington is made it wide receiver haven't worked out former former seahawks wide out Paul Richardson signed to a five year forty million dollar deal wasn't healthy and Seattle and cautious watches twenty passes in seven games last season former first rounder. Josh DACHSHUND hasn't developed in Washington. Just decline the fifth year option on Dachshund Jamison crowder left the jets <hes> mister relevant Trey Quinn will be as replacement Jay Gruden gruden drafted Terry maclaurin in the third round but there but is there any reason to think Washington is going to start developing whiteouts effectively. This is likely the league's worst group of starting wide receivers while that's the kind those kind the tools you wanNA put around a rookie quarterback and you know the funny thing is according to warn sharp. This is the most expensive offense in the N._F._l.. This mostly costly offense. Well take the field the N._F._l.. Because of the Investment Alex Smith and you know that is not going to write to pay off <hes> yes so I mean again another reason why you you WanNa put this on this limited offense in the hands hands of a quarterback who understands limitations in that case keenum. It's Cole McCoy too but I'm going to operate on the assumption that cultures isn't going to stay healthy so <hes> that's case keenum you don't want to <hes> experiment and test out a rookie <hes> with these with these kind of weapons <hes> especially if you're Jay Gruden and you know you have the expectation or the hope and we're assuming he does is of of having team good enough for him to remain as head coach. You know what's interesting. I was thinking about this as I was reading this early this morning. <hes> that the redskins according to Barnwell look I mean I don't know if it's the worst it's certainly among the five for six worst greg in a starting wide receiver groups and the N._F._l.. And we we know that you know in terms of offensive weapons they don't have much. I mean you have to pray. The Jordan Reed comes back plays thirteen games in his Jordan Jordan Reed again. You got to hope that Chris Thompson is a weapon out of the backfield. The dairy skies pays off as a second round pick and turns into a a guy that with Adrian Peterson is a big time back that that that <hes> Vernon Davis continues to be effective in it somebody somebody whether it's Richardson Dachshund or Harmon or maclaurin. Somebody steps up you.

"Behind the scenes stuff in one of the things I want to start with is bulletin board material and producer Jim brought this up, but one of the things that came out in a coal Roby. Coleman said that, you know, Tom Brady over time with his age is sort of worn down and a lot of people pointed to the fact that maybe the patriots take that put it up on the bulletin board. And and kinda roll with it. But you know, I want to throw that to you, and sort of, you know, this is their ninth Super Bowl, they understand the hoopla of you know, the Super Bowl week, and what happens leading up to it is that something that actually happens. Is there such? Thing as bulletin board. Material for a team like the patriots at this point. You know, I don't think so I mean, I think bill's gonna play this game pretty well down the middle. I mean, I think he has great respect for the patriot for for the Rams. I think he has great respect for what they do. I mean, you have to when you look at this ram team. And I wrote about it on the Aflac, Sean McVay doesn't get enough credit for being able to take what he's what he saw when he got there. You know, Sean McVay as I mentioned earlier was part of the started his career in Tampa Bay with Gruden you know, from his grandfather got a job working there. And then he went up to Washington with the with the Shanahan's started working there, and then Jay Gruden came in and he was able to stay there. So he's been around. Let's say three different variations of the west coast offense because Shanahan's offense is rooted in the west coast. It just adds a dimension of the inside and outside zone to it. So anyway, but when he gets the job at the Rams, he does it really run west coast. He runs. As a variation of west coast more really towards Joe Gibbs. I mean, there's very few teams in the NFL that keep the keep seven men into pass protect than the Rams do. It's remarkable. They're not interested in getting five the route. They know Goff needs to be protected. They know Goff needs time. This is not a knock on golf. This should just who Goth is. And so they know how to handle it. And so they're able to develop an offense around what he does best. And then he built it..

"I'm ready to do that. If I only throw it twenty five times and let the defense and the money game. Typically, I'll do that as well. It goes one more interesting matchup as far as I'm concerned. S you'll the great great Bill check against the the young bull, and Sean McVeigh. And we know how great Sean has been in the last couple of years as far as his ram offenses concern. But we also know how great Bill Belichick is as far as taking away. You know, your best player your best offense attr- threat. So how do you see that matchup going as well? I it'll be interesting because Bella check, obviously. And then the strength of what they do. And they they their ability. We always talk about their abilities their offense to morph itself into whatever needs to be. I think throw run the ball forty times. We'll do it. When you throw the ball forty five times. We'll do it. We'll defensively they have that. Same ability to kind of okay? If we need to be passive zone team. We'll do that we need to be more. Chris and blitz will do that. It will be interesting. Just like last week. Everybody was very interested in seeing how they were going to adapt yourself to take on that great Kansas City Chiefs defense and young quarterback. And and can they stop tyreek hill, and what they're gonna do to configure to stop that? Likewise, it's gonna I'm gonna for one of them going to be very interesting to see how they how they approach it. And and how successful it is Sean McVay as obviously a brilliant coach. He's got a real sense of what his team is. I'm just doing a piece right now that I'm going to be using our playbook shown as we down in Atlanta looking at that very. Thing in terms of the strength of what the Los Angeles Rams do in my p with Sean buffet is. And you can see the influences of different people. He's been with the play action packages, the boots and the Wagle's the three level throws. You can see a lot of the the Mike Shanahan and Kyle Shanahan influence that the that has been on him the Jay Gruden influence. That's been around him as well. See you can see you know, what his priorities are. And and there's going to be very much that match back and forth. If there's one thing the Rams, very, well, Sean McVeigh has a very real sense of. Okay. If you do this. I'm going to do that. So whatever it is. They get a sense of. And there's going to be like a boxing match. They're going to be you know, testing each other with jabs in the first quarter to see. Okay. But what are you going to do an album I gonna react to it to see? Okay. This is your plan. Now, this is how we're going to attack it. So it's going to be a fascinating matchup. Brian Billick the NFL network joining us here SuperBowl champion. Coach on ESPN LA. What are you seeing from Brady if anything that is a notch? I guess slower or different at this stage of his is there anything. No, I defy anybody to go back and look at the throws from Tom Brady five six ten years ago. And look at the throws now and say, oh, yes, this is this is different maybe different. Because of the receivers yet around him with the style of play they may the doing, but the physical mechanics of what he's doing. Now, I'm sure there are some differences. I mean, the man's forty one years old, and there's going to be a difference he trained so meticulously the style. They clearly the small ball is what they thrive in in terms of moving the ball down the field. But I don't know that I don't know that that's an extension of where Tom Brady is in his career. And it forty one years old rather than it is. Well, let's this is the group receivers we have this is our strength. And so we're gonna play or strength. I imagine if you gave Tom Brady tyreek hill, I think it's much more deep passes type took tyreek hill than we're seeing with the group that he has right now that has nothing to do with his ability to get the ball..

"A guy that was oh, he's from the Bill Walsh to your the Mike McCarthy. Mike Tomlin, my car at the okay, a home grown. So it does happen. So a guy that learns from guy can bring it because we've seen it word, but they. Guys, multiple years top years not in the league for like a day. But you look at some other guys like Charlie weis in and Romeo Cornell and some other guys that worked for Bill Belichick and have gone. Josh mcdaniels went to Denver, Charlie weis wasn't Charlie. Weis was never going to be successful. Because he got caught between trying to be Bill Parcells in trying to be Bill Belichick instead of trying to be Charlie weis. So he wasn't going to be successful. He just wasn't. But this is my point like why not look for a guy that just really good at it who maybe worked for some other guys that were really good at it. Because I mean, Jay Jay Gruden is a nice coach he's had some success. But it's not like G groups, Bill Belichick Bill Walsh. Mike Holmgren where you're looking. Okay. There look at this guy. And the Rams went and found him and plug him in works. Really? I'm shocked. Jay groome still has a job. Yeah. Yeah. Shocked shocked. I'm shocked and now we're just because longtime ago they've been in a meeting with Sean McVay and all of a sudden, they're head coaching candidates. It just didn't seem like a great way to your business. It just didn't seem like a great way to go about picking you got to. Sometimes you have to take a shot in a chance on certain guys. The problem that I have with it. They haven't been doing it long enough for me. They they don't have the skins on the wall to be able to just be put into those positions put into it to those do I believe that they earn those positions to beat. No, no. I don't think they were just put in those positions divisional round of the NFL playoffs starts tomorrow. On all four games next. All right. That's right. It is divisional round of the playoffs day are here. Guys. Let's start in Kansas City where the eleven and six colts take on the twelve and four Kansas City Chiefs. You know, the colts have never lost to the chiefs in a playoffs. Therefore, no all-time nugget for you. What do you think about this game Keyshawn? It can be interesting. Andrew luck can get hot. The secondary of the Kansas City. Chiefs has been pretty God awful all year long. I think when you look at those guys internet secondary Scandic and in some of ills friends, they just have struggled in that secondary. Andrew luck in T Y Hilton those guys hot at times and really put some things on. But they're playing in Kansas City. You know, how feel about a team going on the road team? Don't team going on the road in an environment. That is tough to play in let alone the cold weather is just the atmosphere. Kansas city. You got Patrick behold. Who's extremely hot despite not having cliff Kingsbury as head coach. And he read has to get over the hump. Andy Reid is struggled in the playoffs as a coach in Kansas City. So now, this is the opportunity for him because if he gets past Indianapolis, I think he beats the New England Patriots or the the structures that sandy chargers to LA. I it's you ended where I I'm most interested to start key. And that's what the Andy Reid the guy. That's had this much success guy that no one thinks that any read is anything other than a really really good coach. But his playoff record is not indicative of how much success he said that's a big question for me. They still don't have Kareem hunt and that their offense has been different since he's been gone. They're down to I want to say their third string back. And while Pat Mahomes is my MVP if I had a vote I would vote for him first time playoff quarterbacks really struggle that record for those guys is a bismuth..

"It just to me that shows you the ineptitude of the franchise where cousins walks out the door. That's fine transition to a younger quarterback to trade for Alex Smith, and I give them the contract that they gave them made no sense. And not only the trade them it trade a starting quarterback. You understand at some point. Jay Gruden was trying to make a move to save his career in Washington. And you know, that Alex Smith is the perfect quarterback for the type of system that he runs, but at the same time you bring this quarterback who's the ball to right? They have failed completely when it came to drafting wide receivers. They like our song go. They let everybody go. Tight end. But he's never healthy on the field Crowder as a slot receiver. But but he's another guy who's always injured. Now, you're leaning on Josh dachshund who was a bust for you. And then you look around the rest of the guys you're going to rely on Michael Floyd to get it done for you guys. It's not happening. It's been great reminiscing about the skins this morning. It really has. Jerseys of next. How you doing happy new year? Everybody. Let's go Pete. How you doing? But all right. Listen first time long time because I'm a San Diego charger fan. I I've been following them since Lance all worked, and you go it can't be more terrible on franchise. Then the chargers, which Spanos is the owner. But the one thing I gotta say that out of all always been a black cloud over our franchise. The dominican. We got rid of Fred dean. Minute. We got rid of Johnny Jefferson and say, ow, and Rodney Harrison, and you know, GM's costs in a Super Bowl chances. I it's it's rough. I tell you. It's rough being a charger fan. I I don't I don't really know for sure, but they probably have more guys in the hall of fame any team that that never went to a Super Bowl. But I hate I hate to think that rivers is going to mirror the the the career that Dan Fouts had. But the one thing I gotta say is that in spite of everything that's happened to the chargers, especially getting leaving San Diego and playing in a twenty thousand seat soccer stadium. Right. I it's hard. Let me tell you. It's hard. It's real hard being a charger playoff game today, though. I mean that today peace too. But you know, today, you know. My optimistic about this game. How could you be when you're a charger fan? When if if if you know charged your history and charge your playoff games, he understand what I'm talking about. I think we understand we went through it a little bit. And and people to have that game this afternoon, which is gonna get going about two and a half hours from now down in Baltimore. I get the failures. And I understand you being upset about Spanos. And it is a joke that they're in LA, and nobody cares about the chargers all day cares about the Rams or they're playing in a soccer stadium. It's a shame that they're no longer in San Diego and past failures is sold his team. And that franchise that this is a different year. And and he has done a great job as head coach. They've got an opportunity to prove today that it's a different year than it's a different charger team. That's not going to be the same past failures. But Dave just like anything else. They've got to prove it on the field. No question. And that's the only thing that they could do to change that perception. And you know, we talked about coaching. Staffs and hiring. Will we were talking about the jets earlier talked about a great job by Vance? Joseph coming up with the staff that is perfect for his offense in his defense can win. We know is a great offense coordinator. And as always got the best out of Philip rivers. And then go to the defense side of the ball with the coaching. Gus Bradley, what's about two coaches that have had a lot of experience, and I've had head coaching experience running the offense and the defense of that Vance Joseph can control everything that's a sign of the different charges team that they haven't had in a long time pizza charger fan was down this morning. Hopefully about four fifteen this afternoon. He's filling a little bit better than we just need to remind them. But you Redskin. Yeah. That's exactly right. I'll put a smile on anybody's face update time areas..

"Also. Speaking of an owner that has direct pipeline to players or whoever else. You surprised Jay gruden's remaining in Washington, I think you gotta give a guy a pass one is I two quarterbacks break their legs. And you know, they were what six and two. I think when Alex Smith got hurt that's pretty good. I mean, I think he had this team going to good direction. I think one of the issues too whether it's Jay Gruden or Jason Garrett or John Harbaugh any of the guys that were purported to be on the hot seat this year. Is that who you're gonna get better? You know, I think if there were a number of really hot or intriguing candidates. I think maybe we would ever still would see more moves. But I think that they just look at it. I mean that's happened in Baltimore. Like, wait a minute before lining up to get our coach or we want to move on from him. If if that many people would rather than. Have our coach. And I think that's partially. What happened there? He, but you bring up the intriguing question of the we talked about the who's next on the players side on the coaching side. I think after what happened, and I think there's a reason why there's so many firings to the impatience. They're seeing the Nagy's and the McVeigh's with their creative sexy offenses and doing so well. If we're getting impatient. But to we know you would know a lot better than I would who the next nee Nikki and McVeigh's are, you know, where we're seeing this group out there now and seems to be the same name circulating. Of course, Josh mcdaniels despite his reneging last year there's a hot candidate again. Are we are? We do we know who those is mcdaniels the quote, unquote, hottest guy out there is there someone, you know, that's we should be looking at. No, that's the thing. And by the way, I don't think anybody knew that Nagy would be Nagy or that McRae would be McVeigh. You know, they're all just kinda hoping and you look at even twenty sixteen there were seven head coaching openings and the only guy that still has the job from two thousand sixteen is Doug Peterson Philadelphia place. Guys got fired six seven. So the track record tells you that probably at bashed out of these eight openings, Andrew probably two of them. You know, end up getting good coaches twenty five percent, or so and having coaches that work out and buy workout. I guess I mean, you know, five years or more. So it's it's you know, I know fans get excited fans want change fans want the quick fix. But the reality is. Is you know, there's a pretty good chance that. They're not going to be any better off. You know that it's gonna they're gonna be right back here a year or two years or three years from now. You one thing. I wanted to ask you about you've asked me about a lot. But I want to get your take on some as we as we wrap up here kind of bigger picture issues with the NFL it almost seems like it's which the word invincible impenetrable monolithic can't be punctured we complain. What are you waiting for unless this falls into that Stephen Ross category of the bird in the hand? Let's see what else is out there. Maybe Washington makes a run a John Harbaugh who knows? Right now, Denver and Miami. Or the two teams that are believed to be the most likely to make a phone call to the ravens. And if you if you look if the charges beat the ravens on Sunday Harbaugh's immediately available to be hired. And if you do enough of your homework before then if you do enough of your search before then you can immediately make the phone call to the ravens and say, what would it take? And I I have a feeling that those phone calls already been made, right? You have relationships PC at meetings people, you know, people you talk to people you've dealt with before. Hey, let me just tell you something before we go down this path. We see this vague. Announcement you've made about Harbaugh being back for two thousand nineteen and there's some people who are interpreting that is meaning maybe he'd be available is isn't it? If he is just between us, we're not gonna leak this to anybody. We just want to know trust me here, we want to know. So we can make our plans accordingly is he in players play. And if he's in play, what do you think is going to take? And then, you know, and I think that's already happened. How would it not? It'd be stupid. Not to be malpractice. It'd be beyond malpractice. We still haven't come up with a word. For beyond malpractice. All right question. Dom Piccirillo asks if you're a team of a ton of cap space, would you sign Levy on bell or trade for Antonio Brown? Well. I think the ton of cap space really doesn't matter because even if you don't have a ton of cap space, you can make it work. You could definitely make Antonio Brown work without a ton of cap space. But let me on Belva question is do you think you'll get value out of him? The colts are a team that lay beyond bell is eyeballing. The colts have Marlin MAC under contract at less than a million dollars. Each of the next two years. Aren't you better off with Marlin MAC? Leonard fournette the guy who's fallen out of favor in Jacksonville, the guy who's guaranteed money. The Jaguars have voided that's going to lead to a fight. I wrote something yesterday about his contract, by the way. I have his contract. I've read his contract. Is an argument to be made that even though there's general language in the contract that would void the guarantees. If he is suspended for any reason, the fact that the contract then lists the specific types of suspensions that would trigger avoiding the guarantees and doesn't include a suspension for onfield misconduct. That could lead to an argument. And it's not it's not written like this. And I don't wanna get too deep into the lawyer weeds here but bear with me. I still can't completely shed my former life, I said shed. It's not written. Like this the guaranteed money for any future payments, guaranteed nature will be voided in the event of any failure to play or practice for reasons. Unrelated to a football injury such as right, or including but not limited to that's the key buzz word for lawyers including but not limited to a suspension under the personal conduct policy PD policy, substance abuse policy etcetera. It doesn't read like that. There's one part of provisions it mentions voiding guarantees for not practicing or playing for reasons other than injury and then separately without including but not limited to it lists the types of suspensions that trigger avoid and you don't need that. That's all wasted. If the language that generally says the guarantee voids if you don't practice your play if that's broad enough to encompass suspensions. You don't need to listen. Any suspensions? See I think the interpretation very well could be that refers to a holdout did if you just don't show up if you hold out your guarantees go away. Because the way that the suspensions the various types of suspensions are listed it separate. There's no connection between the two and the argument would be hey, you did not list a potential suspension for misconduct. So anyway, I mentioned Leonard fournette because some point one million to get him for two years versus signing on belt, or whatever he wants seventeen million a year there's going to be options for teams that are looking for running backs. And I just I think that I think the jets are going to be the team that shows up and overpays for on bell. But for Tonio Brown. It's not a cap issue. It's do you think this guy is going to come in and be a team player? They beat him down a couple of years ago before they paid him. They were leaking negative things about his interactions with teammates, etc. And maybe it worked for a year. But this past year, there's been distractions issues. He's facing a lawsuit because he allegedly threw furniture off of a balcony and almost hit a little kid. So that that big smile that facade. There's some other stuff going on behind it. And every once in a while, we get a glimpse. Related question from Kate. And Lester where Leonard fournette Antonio Brown be moved because of their antics this year, I think with for net because they haven't been two point nine million for next year. And I'm sure they'd like to try to to justify their belief in him that made him a fourth overall pick in the draft. I think they hope this him up because they can dangle his four point one million dollars that he do to make in twenty twenty over his head to get him to do everything that's expected of them in two thousand nineteen. I don't know how they got so lax in Jacksonville this year. But I have a feeling they're going to do everything they can to change that. And they're going to insist on the kind of discipline that was instilled in that team last year Antonio Brown. Ryan Clark was on with Scott van pelt on sportscenter last night and Brown said they gotta move him. If you want to have any credibility in your locker room, you got to move and already George KENDALL. The forty Niners tight end flirting with Antonio Brown on Twitter sup at eighty four and Brown responded with. Starry-eyed emoji. I'll have the Steelers going gonna react to that. Mike Tomlin has a press conference on Wednesday. It should be interesting. Frankly, they may not get to Keith Butler stunning lack of knowledge regarding the penguins roster. That was the big story as it relates to Pittsburgh dysfunction before this other one. I just. How do you not get in trouble with the league office for lying about somebody being injured? Usually, it's concealing an injury to get someone in trouble. The Steelers reportedly if this, and I have no reason to doubt, the Pittsburgh post gazette on this Jerry dulack and Ed bouchette. But if it's true. The Steelers said he had a knee injury to cover for the fact that he just took off my God. I don't know what the league does about that. Well, I know what they do they act like it never happened. They just move on. Right. The league does not like to point a finger at any of its teams. And and say here's a cheater unless it's the patriots. And unless they feel like the original spy gate punishment wasn't enough. And they think they have them dead to rights with deflate gate, which was an example of all the worst things that can happen in any organization. Panther news asks will the Panthers trade for a quarterback to backup. Cam Newton next year. I think they liked Taylor heineke. I think the real question with Cam Newton is what's his future in Carolina. I don't see him going anywhere. But this show the shorter fixed. He's got two years left on the contract. He is making a very reasonable salary in comparison to other quarterbacks. He may start wanting to get an adjustment. But new owner same GM same head coach for now. If and when is a coaching change will the new coach want Cam Newton and his Cam Newton in the early stages of breaking down, even though he looks like a giant. Right. The Lilliputians still took down a giant relative to them. You get hit enough times. You get hurt enough times. You get close to thirty. You get on the wrong side of thirty. There's a chance your body starts breaking down. You just can't do it anymore at least not at the level. That you're accustomed to. At the real four. No asks with the news that Mike Zimmer and Rick Spielman are staying is there any update on possible changes? Well, look they have to figure out what they're doing. Offense. And Kevin Stefanski has emerged as a guy who's going to be interviewed by the Browns. I think and others probably will do the same nothing wrong. With doing a bunch of interviews. You can pick brains. You can get ideas. You can you can pick up all sorts of information. You know, somebody's trying to get a job that can say a lot of things you just sit there and be quiet. Let them talk. George Edwards is on the list in Tampa Bay. He's the Vikings defensive coordinator Zimmer runs that defense though. I really think what the Vikings should hope for. And I'm not joking. They should hope that the Broncos higher Mike Shanahan. And they should hope that Mike Shanahan picks up the phone. Calls the Vikings and says what do you want for Kirk cousins? That's what the Vikings should hope for and the Vikings should say for starters. We want case keenum. Give us case keenum and a second round pick, and you can have Kirk cousins. And at the Broncos say, no, we'll just give you creek case keenum, the Vikings should say, okay. We'll just take case keenum wouldn't that be something? Not quite the Ken stabler, Dan Passerini trade, not quite the Nick foles. Sam Bradford trade. But if I'm the Vikings and Shanahan Cassini drafted cousins in the fourth round in two thousand twelve he was the guy that Shanahan wanted. Shanahan didn't RG three RG three was forced onto him. And if Shanahan gets that gig. Hey, John, I know how to make cousins work. He'll be great in our system. Let's get him out here. Let's do it. Yeah. It's twenty eight million this year next year. But let's do it. If Shanahan gets that job. And he makes that call the Vikings the Vikings should should pay some of the salary. I mean, it's it's not quite a Brock Osweiler hot potato deal. But I think if the Vikings could get out from under this Kirk cousins thing and bring keenum back. That's the kind of kick in the ass. The Vikings need this off season. That's just my opinion for what it's worth. And it ain't much. Next question Terry against their fourteen. What is John de Filippo's current job market? Haven't heard his name mentioned in any of the coaching carousel discussions could end up getting on a staff. You know, what happens is the guys who go in for these coaching interviews. They have with them binder of information in one of the things they do is. They say, hey, if I get this job, here's who I will hire. And sometimes after the guy gets hired. He doesn't deliver on who he says he's going to hire. But chances are Defilipo is a guy who's on one or more lists of somebody who would come in as a quarterbacks coach offensive coordinator, you're going to have to undo some of the damage that was done by virtue of his firing, obviously. But. And I'd be concerned because let me tell you. I firmly believe the John D Filipo was told on multiple occasions. You have to run the ball. You have to run the ball. You have to run the ball. And he didn't. So either he is incapable of taking direct orders or he's unwilling to. That's not a good sign, and I would want to know the truth the whole truth and nothing, but the truth is relates to what went down in Minnesota before I'd hire John D Filipo to do anything on an NFL team quick break. We'll return we'll wrap up this New Year's day edition of pro football talk live be back right after this..

Redskins pick up linebacker days after domestic violence arrest

"Was a linebacker for the San Francisco forty Niners. You got into trouble over the weekend on domestic violence charges down in Tampa. And from there the Washington Redskins have determined. They were going to sign him at he was released by said forty Niners more on the story now. Brian Clark ABC news. That's just a quick synopsis. I have what are the details. Now, we'll Tony Reuben foster very talented linebacker from Alabama as you said he had top ten talent going into the twenty seventeen draft but fell because of all feel concerned he was the forty Niners essentially took a chance on them thirty first overall than last off season he was arrested on felony domestic violence charges. His accuser, then recanted said he made the story up. He was also accused of having an assault. Rifle. So he was put on probation. He can't own guns. But then just this weekend with the forty Niners in Tampa hours before a game against the buccaneers. He's arrested at the team hotel for an alleged misdemeanor incident involving that same woman. So the forty Niners announced Sunday morning they were going to cut him Monday. And then Tuesday the Redskins scooped him up and signed him. Well, that's got to be a PR nightmare for the Redskins. But it appears the Jay Gruden the coach of the Redskins in the team ownership doesn't really care about that. Well point though, Tony because Jay Gruden met the media yesterday. But the team ownership Daniel Snyder the president Bruce Allin day didn't they're nowhere to be found. They have not spoken publicly about this. Doug Williams, the director of player personnel for the team. He released a statement saying we talked to some of Rubens teammates from Alabama who are on the Redskins, and they were supportive of this. But two of them have said, no, they didn't ask us anything about Ruben foster. So there are some questions about the what the ownership has to say about this. But that's where the coach Jay Gruden did speak yesterday. He took a. Kind of a cautious approach. We said look there's a lot that has to take place before he plays for us. There's the legal system has to play out the NFL disciplined system and there's the Redskins policy right now. He's on the exempt list. The commissioners exemplify that means he cannot practice or play with the team, but he can attend meetings. Well, of course, there's been some issues with the NFL and players who have had domestic violence issues and this all culminated in policy changes by the NFL. So where's the league now? And this the Commissioner's exempt list is really the main the most recent change we've seen we saw that in response in high profile incident a few years ago where it's sort of a grey area where it's not a player being suspended. It's essentially a a, wink wink suspension where they can't play they can't practice, but they're not officially formerly suspended. It's essentially letting the process play out. So that's where the NFL mainly is right now the league does have a policy, obviously, a zero tolerance policy for domestic violence. So there will be. Disciplined from the Commissioner's office if this is proven to be true. But yeah, it has been an ongoing. Story for the NFL ongoing story really in society, and it's not a good one.
