"And welcome again to my podcast. I'm Jay forest the spiritual skeptic today. I'm going to be talking about two kinds of religion so I've been working through studying different ways of looking at religion anthropology anthropology. There's the anthropology of religion sociology of religion philosophy religion so there's different different takes different principles and methodologies that come to the question of religion and you know the psychological. The psychology of religion is one of the older ones that I've studied William James and the varieties of religious experiences a good example full of probably one of the earliest works on the psychology of religion and his viewpoints still hold a lot of weight he was way ahead of his time and thinking about religion and religious experience but in the sociology of religion one of the things that I began to notice is the problem is religion agenices far too huge of a conglomerate that it's hard to define it whether you study religion in an anthropology or sociology or psychology you'll find that the biggest difficulty they have no one agrees on definition of religion so what I WanNa do today is I want to go into one of the distinctions I mean there's probably four distinctions. We can make we can think of religion as theistic or non theistic for example you have Buddhism which is a non theistic easiest religion and then you have Christianity which is a probably the easiest and most readily known example of theistic religion for the Buddhist. There's no creator God so other non theistic religions would be like Jane. ISM Taoism so there's there's other on non-theistic religions and then of course there's other theistic religions like Judaism and Islam as well as of course Christianity but one of the things that's interesting interesting when you begin to study the sociology of religion because they different branches of of different disciplines deal with religion differently so psychology comes at the question of religion from the psychological viewpoint point that is how does it deal with the the psychology of Human Nature how does it deal with mind and behavior and that's the focus focus of psychology of religion so psychology religion would be interested in the experience of the divine the sacred whatever it is and trying to understand that the philosophy religion would be interested in the thinking of religion religious thinking and whether or not it's reasonable rational and stands up to uh to a test of truth and the science of religion region would be more along the idea of either the psychology of religion or philosophy of religion in one on since the philosophy religion is kind of larger Ombrella because philosophy takes in the the best that we have in science at psychology and even phenomenology so and when I say psychology I actually meaning the social sciences which is probably not the best way to say. I should probably say the physical sciences the Social Sciences philosophy and phenomenology analogy might be a better way of saying that for different ways of looking out the subject of religion so from the sociological standpoint while I say the anthrax anthropological standpoint. They want to know the origin of it they want to see what is it from the inside. Where did it start. What's the the the structure of the religion where sociology is more interested in the social aspect aspect so anthropology is not not necessarily ignoring the social aspect but it's trying to get back to seen how it developed and and more of this the structure of the religion from within the religion is trying to look at it from the inside if that makes sense so when you do anthropological research which you do. Is You actually go in you. You might go oh and live with a for an example a tribe and and try to understand the religion from within the tribe. Um Sociology will sometimes do that as well but they're trying to look at more the social the Inter personal aspects of the religion whereafter policies trying to look more from the individualist viewpoint and of course these are hard and fast rules so as I'm studying the sociology of religion one of the things that I began to realize is that there is a major difference between for an example Buddhism and Catholicism early Buddhism and Catholicism or are Christianity and that's the social structure so most people would not what have any argument with Christianity being religion most people I think doc at least in the Westwood engr include that idea of the divine or God or gods or something like that in the idea of religion were eastern religion. That's that's not the case like I said there's the stick a non theistic religion in less and and some atheist want to do this they they would prefer to use religion just for the supernatural so that they can just condemn you know religion and and and some I'm do Sam Harris's waking up is spirituality without religion and what's weird is that he he actually basis most of that spiritually Buddhism which if you look on any any you pick up any book on World Religions Buddhism will be there there you know and so boom is not a religion because it doesn't have a belief in in a creator God. I mean that's an option but the it's really a poor option. Because what do you call it then. What is Buddhism if it's not a religion while it you say won't may maybe maybe we can classify it as a philosophy okay. If it's a philosophy then what's the difference between that and Let's say Immanuel Kant saw philosophy the big difference I mean Immanuel Kant doesn't have followers they don't manual didn't create monks and nuns and Immanuel. Kant doesn't take refuge. I mean we don't take refuge in Immanuel Kant and we we don't have the system that that Buddhism does so. It doesn't look like any other philosophy. If you'RE GONNA call Buddhism of Philosophy there is something different about Buddhism Taoism and Jane resum organism. If you want to be more correct in that is that they are religions minus God. That's what they are. I mean they have every single attribute of religion except they don't have God so. Why don't we just say that their religion without God a non theistic religion that makes more sense rather than doing the other but what's interesting too is. Let's go back to Taoism. I talked a little bit about Dallas couple podcasts ago in one of the things that's interesting about about Taoism is it began as a a disciple student kind of situation where you had sages or or teachers like Lousa which means Master Lau so you had master allow possibly not an historical figure but John's a Master Guan who had disciples and he taught these disciples just light Confucius did it was that kind of a thing a student a a student teacher situation and then in the about the about the third century or so you have of religious Taoism where they created a temple and and rituals and things in this in and they actually translate that asks what's the difference between religious Taoism of that of the third century or so and philosophical Taoism which which is what the originals were so you have a difference in social structure. You have a teacher student relationship and then in the third third century or so you have a congregational situation and really if you look at the difference difference between what they're called in Chinese the difference between lineage and family and it looks like that they would be closer due to a disciple kind of belief system and a congregational type of belief system and you know the people would say that that's philosophical. Taoism right is the student teacher or disciple apple learner situation and then when religious Taoism came and they started a church congregation then that made it religion and so the congregational part is what makes something a religion well. Does it assuming that the the gospels are somewhat historical we find in the Gospels of Jesus that he I was a teacher who followed had followers disciples and it was a student teacher relationship. There was no congregation. They didn't have a congregation so when Jesus was teaching his disciples. was that a religion or wasn't it. If you say it was a religion then it that is a kind of religion. A student student teacher relationship kind of religion. If you want to divide it based on that then before the book of acts there was no religion or you can say it was part of the Judaism a religion of Judaism but let's take another example Buddhism early Buddhism the Buddha was the teacher and he had students. It was a teacher student relationship relationship so we find over and over again this thing that most religions began a student teacher relationship and then ended up being not always Buddhism tends to still be a disciple student disciple kind of student teacher. You're kind of situation at least in some branches so if we look at it that way we can actually divide religion into two kinds we can divide it into a discipleship kind of religion and a congregational type religion one centered in the teacher teacher student relationship the others centered in the community and so that we have two different kinds of religion now. If that holds true Oh and I believe that it does then stoicism as an example of a religion that is a student teacher situation and because stoicism never turned into a congregational situation the West has had a hard time identifying it as a religion because because until the understanding of Buddhism Taoism we only knew Christianity Islam and Judaism all of which became congregational so when we looked at stoicism we'd see it as a philosophy not a religion and yet if we look at epicurious epicurious an epicure innes them that definitely was communal so was a religion. It's usually still identified right as a philosophy you see the difficulty philosophy was it. I mean what is it that makes it a religion and this is this. This is why it's an issue in anthropology psychology and philosophy eighty eighty. It's always an issue define religion and I think it's because we try to over generalize generalize what we WANNA give one definition for all kinds of religion and I think that's a mistake I think we can divide it between theistic of non theistic religion and between discipleship centered religion and congregational centered religion and that will help us get us into four different squadrons for different kinds of religion if you will but I'm I'm trying to focus on just two today and that's the discipleship version of religion and the congregational version of religion. John and I think if we understand that that way I think we get closer to a better understanding a when something is a religion and win. It's not I think most scholars tend to look at stoicism philosophy and I think that's incorrect. I think's stoicism is a religion. I think it is a discipleship center religion. that is somewhat theistic in the sense of there is a god in Stoicism It's a panatheist God but there is a god in stoicism. and I think that Zet if you say A. The what makes it a real religion is a belief in God than stoicism would would be a religion but if you require both a belief in God and a communal situation than epicure UNISOM is it's still a religion because it had both it had the garden which was pretty much the model on which monasticism in the in early Christianity was based in fact many of the the epicure Ian Centers became monasteries so if you look at it that way then you can see yeah it kind of had all the elements of a religion but is still okay classified as a philosophy by most western philosophers and yet after you get past the Hellenistic period no other system philosophy ends up being anything like epicure in his or Stoicism you have people making a wide belief systems but not of them become a basically a religion in the sense of the fill in the philosophical tradition so you have Christianity pretty much took over and that was that was pretty much the dominant philosophy slash religion agenda in the ancient world so when we began to look at religion we need to be a little more discerning and not try to fit all religions under the same banner of type. Give one definition and they all fit and that's what doc Daniel Bennett does in his book religion as a natural phenomenon and what he does in in my view is actually sets. That's it up against. theism is what he's trying to do. A makes it congregational any makes it theistic and if it's not congregational that's not theistic. It's not a religion. Buddhism is therefore not a religion. It's a philosophy and that doesn't hold hold water. If you look at every other philosophy after the hellenistic period there is no philosophies that look anything like Buddhism and in the actual eastern philosophical systems. I never drew a distinction between philosophy and religion. That's a western concept imposed on eastern thinking religion and philosophy. We're not separated and in fact. If you really understand philosophy you would understand that Christians did philosophy they did philosophy about God. They did philosophy with the presupposition that God existed and that the Bible liable was his revelation yes but they did philosophy they reasoned from Thomas acquaintances a good example of a philosopher. Sopher who philosophized based upon those presuppositions and so if you understand and philosophy correctly in my opinion you'd understand philosophy is rational thinking about a topic of importance and that whether you assume that there is a god or not although it changes the conclusions it doesn't doesn't change the activity of philosophy so Thomas Acquaintance was philosophizing but he was doing so in my opinion from from faulty presuppositions and that's that there is a god in that the Bible is his revelation. Both things have no evidence for him in actually have contrary evidence. That's a good reason to doubt that those two things are true and now we can come and we can rethink re-think religion with an understanding and really need to take into consideration specifically for me. Buddhism Taoism resume stoicism because I think all three of those pose a difficulty for most interpretations of religion within at least the philosophical community of nonbelievers. They would like to be able to just use religion..

"Wisconsin votes today is midterm election day across the country, and in Wisconsin earlier this afternoon, I spoke with the executive director of the Milwaukee election commission Albrecht voting numbers at the polls looked so far today. They have looked phenomenal today. We know from talking to our polling places we're getting reports of very high volumes of voters. So we're pretty enthusiastic about turn out in the city of Milwaukee. Do you have an idea of the turnout numbers for today? What are you expecting? Well, we're projecting two hundred thousand voters for a mid-term election, which is pretty consistent with what we saw in twenty ten and twenty fourteen and I think, you know, I'm I'm guessing it's quite possible that will surpass those projections. Just based on what we're hearing from the sites was a lunchtime. Rush today. Maybe. Morning rush. Lunchtime you expect some in the afternoon too. Well, it's interesting. I don't know if this is unique to the city of Milwaukee. But by far our busiest voting hours have become between seven and nine in the morning. Then we do get a noon hour rush, particularly on the college campus areas, and then we get a post work, you know, sort of five to six thirty rush of voters as well. Earlier today, I was hearing about some jammed ballot machine or at least one at a polling place. Have there been any major problems regarding machines today? Yeah. Obviously, I can only speak to the city of Milwaukee. I don't think it's unusual with the voting equipment when you have such a high volume of voter sometimes people drop their I voted sticker in with their ballot or they hold onto the ballot. As the machine is pulling it in and those can caused jams. We've had it happened in the city. We have equipment technicians out in the field who do a pretty rapid response. And then also I think all municipalities we all have argues Hillary bins where we can still take ballots. So that it doesn't disrupt devoting while a piece of equipment is being repaired. And speaking with Milwaukee election commission, executive director, Neil Albrecht. I'll let's talk about what people need to bring to the polls today. Yeah. That's a terrific question. Because I think the public is still struggling with the photo ID requirement and also proof of residence for people. That need to register. So I I guess in the in the most concise way, I'll say you need a photo ID. Wisconsin has a photo ID law. You need to have that photo ID with you. When you go to vote that can be something like a driver's license. State ID some student ID's uniform services card VA card. Those are probably the most common if the address the address on that idea does not need to be current as long as you're already registered at your current address. If you need to register and the address on your photo, ideas, knack current, then you need to bring a second document with you call the proof of residence, and that can be something like a utility Bill Bank, statement credit card statement, any document issued to you by unit of government. It can be your lease. There's a pretty long list of accept. Documents in that area. I have anybody has any questions around what they need in order to go to vote Basta, call us or you're municipality prior to appearing because we wind voting to be a positive experience for people when I voted at Shorewood high school this morning. I didn't notice any extra security, but I'm sure some places around the city around Milwaukee need extra security have you had any issues with that today. Well, we're very fortunate in the city of Milwaukee, Milwaukee public schools are actually closed today. So we have no students in any of our schools that are voting sites if schools were in session, we would have extra security, particularly at the elementary schools. That's executive director of the Milwaukee election commission. Neil all Braxton great information there on indeed referendums, run the bell, a lot of places in Wisconsin today as well. Vince for Toronto today's TM Jay forest put together this list in the state. There are sixty one school districts that are posing referendum questions. They total one and a half billion dollars here in southeast Wisconsin. Twenty one school districts are posing referendum questions total cost five hundred and fifty six million dollars. The biggest asks in our area while we're tosa with a one hundred and twenty five million dollar referendum. Also creek Waukesha, cedar Berg, Burlington p walkie and greenvale with major referendums on the ballot today if you'd like to keep track of what's going on. Text the word election E L E C T.

"Worried about it? Then did you raise your voice under the Obama administration? In numbers of cases. Usually, I remember a constituent who was in detention at the border, arguably berry inappropriately, and we, you know, we raised our voice in that instance, and many others, but that's. We've got to do this now in unison. It's not enough to do it case by case for Senator or house member by house member we've got to resolve to fix this issue. Senator Tammy Baldwin. Thank you. Thank you. And you can't tell the clips she got two quick hook. Because she didn't answer the question that was the second time that Baldwin the host on CNN had asked you that question and neither time that she answered the direct question of the host, and it points to a pattern and I wanna play a little bit of the debate Monday nights at WM hosted by team Jay forest. Charles Benson and Shannon's SIMS at W W W M, I should say rather. And how she kind of played around with the answer. And healthcare for the administration. It is unraveling the Affordable Care Act and threatening the affordability and again coverage for people with preexisting conditions. And lastly, we have a battle in court right now. Which would declare not only the Affordable Care Act unconstitutional, but it would indeed prevent or would release insurers of the obligation to cover people with preexisting conditions. So we have some urgent immediate issues. Not something if I could follow up, you'll have thirty seconds do that. I did not hear something on how you think we could pay for this Medicare for all is going to require higher payroll taxes, our income taxes doing nothing would cost more, and that that's the abdication of the responsibility of US center because you have to answer the questions and just because you can do that you can avoid questions. We've we've seen it before and base forever. But this is one of your signature issues healthcare, your trumpeting free healthcare for everybody with no idea no clue really how to pay for it. That's why Charles Benson who's good at his job asked you twice. And neither time. Did you answer that question? And again, you're challenging your opponents who works in the medical field is a nurse understands that environment significantly better than you do. But it also illustrates the two clips we just played the shallowness. On the platform of US Senator Tammy Baldwin, her inability to defend our positions. And frankly. Shockingly bad on Monday night. Just getting the words outs the defender positions. Whatever those are. You need to be better than that. Senator Ron Johnson on the show the other day a question. I get a direct answer forceful. There's no heading in Hong stuttering. None of that direct answer to a question that I ask him. He doesn't hold back. He tells it like it is. If I wanted to hear or read talking points, I'll go to the democratic national committee's websites, especially ancient talking points. Like the ones that Tammy Baldwin throwing out there serving. Nope. Direct purpose. Look, I understand. There's forty some percent of the voters in Wisconsin that will vote for Tammy Baldwin because he has denied her name. I'm not talking to you. I'm talking to the rest of the folks. The independent voters in Wisconsin. And we know they're out there because they shift frequently back and forth between Democrats and Republicans. Are you happy with Tammy Baldwin's work? Responding to what happened? It's Toma VA. Are you happy with her response to that? Are you happy with her lack of response to the questions? Unimak Gration asked by CNN's, Brooke Baldwin are you happy with the response or lack of response to Charles Benson's question after debate Monday on healthcare. This is your signature issue one that you have talked about extensively in your ads on TV. And so the independent voters that Wisconsin when you look at those ads how clearly she speaks. How well intentioned those ads are how well done they are. And that's what you get. When you spend a lot of money with ad agencies. And how different her personal live appearances? Are her reluctance to come on radio? Television in Milwaukee, other than some very limited appearances one gets the impression that you're not ready to face those direct questions because when you are asked them, you don't answer them or you deflect or you're going to the traditional. Elected official response, which is talking points. We deserve better in Wisconsin. It doesn't make Tammy Baldwin a bad person. I don't know Tammy Baldwin. But voters in Wisconsin deserve answers. If you're gonna if you're gonna promote free healthcare for all. And make that one of your signature elements of your campaign. You sure as heck better know how you're gonna pay for it. And when Charles Bessant ask you, how are you going to do this payroll taxes income taxes high going to pay for it? That empty headed. Dishonest disingenuous answer that it costs more to do nothing. That makes no sense. You've been a Senator now for one term. You're going to defend the position defended. Don't fall back on talking points. Don't take the easy way out which is what you did. On Monday night at U W..
