"At the Javits convention center in New York City we would not have been able to do this without the collaboration of the administration representatives from the federal agencies and congressman Brian stack end up personal credit to you for forgetting that the lined up and getting the cooperation but the point the point I've been trying to make your congressman is that even in these challenges these tough times there's opportunities for companies and for individuals to step up to me this demonstrates both of those things we have a local company obviously saw the need realize they could do something about it and then you've helped facilitate the rest of the story the best of what makes our country the greatest country in the world as the whole of America approach is the private sector the American entrepreneurial spirit that stepped up to the plate in trying times and as our companies and our workers ramp up to answer the call we're gonna be able to alternately overcoming tackle this virus and we're gonna do it on the back of our workers were stepping up here it is still in the holes they were identifying and making sure that in particular are nurses and doctors have the equipment and medical protection that they need have you heard from other businesses in our state of said look we we want to help tell us how to do that and can you make those connections yeah absolutely there's a company here locally in Janesville cranes making the protective face masks that you see doctors or any other kind of almost look like a welder's mask the doctors are wearing they got notified by last week and within twelve hours of being notified they were running prototypes they've already shipped two thousand to mercy hospital in Janesville and now they're shipping thousands around our state you know we encourage businesses that need help getting government clearance not all businesses need that but those that do reach out were able to help coordinate getting those businesses in contact with FEMA with the governments and the president's task force on corona virus to get the approvals we need because it's going to be our entrepreneurs are workers are private sector and it's going to be able to produce what we need in mass quantity as fast as we can I love the story and I you know I was I was pleased when I sign on the president gets beat up a lot a lot of from places but I was pleased when I saw him have a list in a line up of of leaders from across the country the private sector that are trying to do the right thing unfortunately the network said well we're not gonna cover that part of the of the the brief but I mean to me that was the most important part because it showed again the demonstration but what we can do on the outside looking in to help in in these tough times absolutely it's going to be the American worker in this entrepreneurial spirit and that we have in America that's gonna get us through this this is where the president signed coming with a business background cutting through red tape in going in knowing that the private sector is going to drive us forward whether or not it's the accelerated testing that we saw with abit there's a lot of people that live in Costa county that work Abbas just across the state line whether or not it's Jackie income just stepping up to the plate it could be plans plastic manufacturer in Janesville were seen example after example of workers that are willing to bust their tail and get it done in the entrepreneurial spirit the private sector stepping up to the plate and the president helping coordinate this through the task force working great things being done all across our country I want to ask you about the legislation you passed last week we're joined by kinds of Brian style my congressman from the first congressional district in Wisconsin it's a big package two trillion dollars did it did accomplish what you want the coppers with our pieces of it that you say this just isn't right and are you gonna go after some of that stuff by no means is the bill up perfect build but it needed and the time of crisis and so what it did is it stepped up unemployment benefits so workers who are laid off during that time were able to cover their mortgage able to cover their lands and their grocery bills it stepped up with funds for our hospitals and medical workers we're in desperate need of personal protective equipment but it does have flaws and I spoke on the house floor about one of those where it said bill calls for twenty five million in Washington DC that's an appropriate actually introduced a bill but the pull that money back that you either go towards the fight against corona virus vertigo in taxpayers pockets and we're building up support for that but we're working to clean up the bill it wasn't perfect when it passed but overall it was needed in a time of crisis where families are struggling in particular to pay the ransom or mortgaging their grocery bills Congress did have to act that's interesting connection someone trying to make some lawmakers try to make between the Kennedy center and one of iris I don't really see the connection before I let you go one of Texas asked me about the bankruptcy either bankruptcy protections or changes in this legislation that that you're aware of the real goal is to make it so that our small businesses aren't going out of business but I've been so focused on making sure that our workers are laid off have a job to go back to when we get back up and on our feet this bill doesn't really drive forward new laws regarding the bankruptcy but what we're so focused on is preventing them from occurring in the first place and that's where the the paycheck protection act for workers to be able to be paid and reimbursed through the federal government is so critical that our businesses don't go into bankruptcy because if that happens workers on the other side of this won't have a job to go back to and I'm so focused to make sure that when we're on our feet that workers in Wisconsin and across the country have a job to go back to around the other side of this you know it's a little bit of predicting here but do you think this sub two trillion dollar plus package will be enough to sustain us and assisting individuals and corporations for more than a couple months we need to be back here in an innocent Alice's and then respond quickly at the facts dictate and so this is a clear first step to make sure that people are able to get through the first week I'm optimistic that we're gonna get through this sooner rather than later but we need to follow the facts if Congress is called act again we'll be there and we're going to step up to the plate but we shouldn't be premature in in doing and spending taxpayer money frivolously we need to do it in response to the facts on the ground always great to talk to congressman Brian stop issue taken sometime thanks for having me on times of Brian style take a quick break lots more to get to will get to it before we head off to Jeff Wagner at the top of the hour right here on W. 2020 coronavirus pandemic in New York (state
"New York has surpassed a grim milestone the state is now reporting that more than a thousand deaths from the corona virus and with this pandemic engulfing the region the mayor of New York City is warning that the city is running low on critical medical supplies and still rose is following all of this ideal he David I guess talk us through how we have arrived at that this milestone well New York state reported more than two hundred deaths from the corona virus just yesterday alone that was by far the biggest one day jump so far but even that number is likely to look small in the coming days here's a pretty grim assessment from governor Andrew Cuomo I don't see how you look at those numbers and conclude anything less than thousands of people will pass away because remember who would sit tacky it's attacking the vulnerable Angela in hospitals and in New York and it sounds like just under unimaginable stress yeah especially in New York City which now has more than thirty thousand confirmed cases mayor bill de Blasio says the city and its hospitals have enough protective medical equipment on hand for only about the next week and that the need for ventilators is even more acute here's to Bosnia this is a race against time yesterday we sent fourteen hundred ventilators out to our hospitals that is a huge step forward but we have a long long way to go your city is getting help from a wide range of sources for example the nonprofit Samaritan's purse set up a sixty eight bed hospital tent hospital in Central Park FEMA set up thousands of temporary hospital beds inside the Javits convention center the navy hospital ship is on its way to help relieve some of the pressure on city hospitals but there is still is concerned that this man all not be enough and that the city's health system may still be overwhelmed when that number of critically ill people peaks over the coming weeks what and another institution that it that is under duress is correctional facilities right I mean I know I know prisons jails around the United States are starting to see cases spread and and that includes some significantly in New York that's right there more than two hundred confirmed cases of corona virus among the staff and inmates in New York City jails including the infamous reikers island complex and this is a big concern for public health experts because they say that once the virus gets into an environment like that it is very hard to contain because it's almost impossible to do social distancing or even wash your hands adequately so there is a lot of pressure to get the jail population down by releasing inmates who don't pose a threat to public safety New York City has released more than six hundred inmates so far according to the mayor but the city is facing calls to release even more as this virus continues to spread what about another place where social distancing is all but impossible I mean detention facilities fee in immigration detention facilities I mean that that there are those in the region as well that's right an immigration and customs enforcement asking for earns two cases of detainees testing positive for corona virus both of them in detention facilities in New Jersey just outside New York there are many lawsuits now across the country calling for ice to release people in detention particularly those who have underlying health conditions that make them particularly vulnerable ice currently hold about thirty eight thousand people in detention almost half if not been accused of a crime other than immigration violations the agency says it is taking steps to protect the immigrants into custody for example suspending social visits lawyers are still allowed to visit but they have to supply their own protective masks and equipment which they despise and court hearings for detained immigrants are still happening despite weeks of criticism now from lawyers and judges all right that is NPR's Joel rose talking us about that dire situation in New York state thanks to the reporting job Hey
