"Totally. It wasn't an accident. It was. Because i said i need this from you like i can't be successful for you in this. I have that and but that was a powerful position. Tied waited till we were stuck in the ditch. Completely would have been my problem. Yeah i feel like that could be one of the best stories. I've heard to illustrate someone who could be earlier. The career just a few levels down so many times. I know you work with a lot of leaders. I get a lot of questions where people feel handcuffed. In the roles. I feel like that is one of the best examples of kind of flipping the switch their an putting the power back to yourself which just love so much This makes me think about something. i i know. Our mutual fend. Dr michael javale. In my recent conversation with him he was talking a lot about setting the conditions for success ahead of time getting ahead of things getting upstream of things similar. What you're talking about there prior to sit in the contract where you're locked in and all of a sudden you have to go and correct things as opposed to setting the right conditions early on. That's one of the things i love. So much I just feel like you do such a good job illustrating these stories. I'm appreciative of that. I do want to dive more in this specific. Some your new work Around impact players. But i would love to know. How do you describe impact players amongst high performing teams. Well you know. I would start with the concept of an impact player in sports which is really wet. Let struck me is at an impact player. Is someone who makes a major contribution. Someone who's talented and skilled capable as an athlete. They perform well but they also have this expert nearly positive effect on a team. You know they're playmakers there. People who make things happen and they also raise level play for everyone on the team. And that's kind of the concept of an impact clear and sports. And i think we see the same kind of people in the world you know. They're the people there the people that are clutch that you know what you know when it's an important situation this is the person you're gonna hand the ball off to and they're going to get the job done. They are going to play on the team and the whole team gets better around them in other people who who find ways to make themselves really valuable to a team and they're the people that we come to depend on and they're the people we handed though most important work too because they come through and they do it it's like they get the right work done and they also do it in the right way and we all know there's like it's the person you're going to hand it to that you just know is going to get it done almost like i can cross off by to-do list and not even have to ever check back with this person because it just good is done. Because they're on it and They're gonna do away that everyone wins..

"Smith in Justin attempt to have another player out there that can hit some jumpers and can also be another wing defender. You can throw it James Harden, Russell Westbrook. Eric Gordon, because that's where we're really fell apart. This is why the Rockets were probably the worst possible matchup for the Lakers, because the hardness of Westbrook's ability to score in the fact the Rockets. They're going small. They don't care how big you are. They're just going to go small and they'll deal with whatever the outcome of that are because they believe the benefits far away the negatives. I'm thinking Maurin Tech City tonight for the Lakers. Probably. Ah, lot more trips to the foul line, and we'll see if you see what happens with rockets if they get any kind of foul trouble or how that plays out, but should be a great game to tonight. I'm fascinated by the contrast of styles like you just pointed out. Yeah, this is this is what makes the playoffs one a kind of like how they always say in boxing styles make fights. Well, that's the same in the end playoffs when you have teams that are drastically different. In the way they play. It does make it a lot of fun and I'll pay. You know the big guy's Javale McGee and Dwight Howard. We're not throw the problem for the Lakers. They just didn't get enough out of their star player in their wing players. Just really they they were They were the ones who are missing in action. They need you guys to be much, much better to have a chance of being the Rockets Tonight. He Smith covers the MBA for Yahoo sports. He's in Orlando, and we've got some good action coming up, starting in about a little over half an hour from now, Game four between the heat and the Bucks. "The Blazers shoot better than 31.8%, it could be even tighter. But yet it's still just an eight point lead for the Lakers. As we start the second quarter. Other fortunate, talked about the five rebounds. Anthony Davis has three of those air offensive rebounds. So the Lakers have missed had done a good job securing the ball. They just have to shore it up inside the Portland Trailblazers. They're getting beat up in the paint. White Howard's in for the first time, the night J. R. Smith and for the first time, the Syriza the Lakers charted over the opening possession. James it is only in the backside with the ball takes the other and misses the layup. U.S. National Aerobatic Champion Patty Wagstaff Recounts a Cessna 185 Flilght
"Welcome to another edition of there. I was a podcast where we put you in the cockpit with pilots in interesting situations and we learn learn how they flew out of them. I'm your host Richard McFadden today. We're delighted to welcome back our inaugural guest on there was podcast three time. US aerobatic robotic national champion. Paddy waxed how do you thank you for joining us again. And we're delighted to have you back on the podcast ace. Richard is great to be back. You're doing a great Javale this podcast. So I'm thrilled to be back. Thank you well great and thanks to people like you. They're so willing to share your circumstances in your situation with all all of us so that we can learn from you had a recent incident on your birthday of all days and you reached out to us to want to share the story about about what happened in the lessons learned. That came out of that. So do you mind sharing that with us today exactly. Yeah it was. My birthday was nine eleven and it was my birthday so all in all not such a great day. Hi It's it's a tough birthday anymore. It's kind of an emotional day anyway so So this was when my bonanza was wrecked in. Had An accident. Might Bonanza of all things I've never had an airplane accident before I've had a few promptings and things like that that for sure but Alone up to everything that I've never had a real accident and just to back it up very very slightly before I started flying i. I was in an accident in assessment to six in Alaska when I first started flying small airplanes up there. Flying in smaller planes in the airplane had Flipped upside down at the end of the runway. We didn't get off the runway and the pilot didn't use the full length of a muddy runway. And so so on so forth so I had been upside down on the ground in an airplane before you and of course those kinds of things really stick with you and so that actually comes into play in this incident. Yeah and people should know they. Probably don't know you for Bonanza flying but you fly one thousand nine hundred fifty eight K.. Model Bonanza that you have flown for a while now Inbetween your aerobatic events which are not so well for right. It's a great little plane to get around in As he says Kay model It was I bought it in nineteen in two thousand twelve and before that I'd had serious in in barons and this was the first detail that I'd had and I re- I really liked it Great little airplane. It was fast and comfortable double and so we miss it yet now. Is the airplane going to be repairable or might be cutting to the chase hurt. No airplanes total. Sorry now aw it was sixty years old so there was a lot. Got A lot out of it. You know for many years later a lot of people enjoyed it and I understand you were flying with an old friend of mine. China Jeff. Rochelle of former Air Force thunderbird pilot is that right. Yeah exactly. He's one of our instructors in good friend and So you were on different front years I think you were you. Were quite a bit later right and the meaning a much younger than he is. I think. That's okay yeah so He's an instructor in your school down there and Saint Augustine. He as instructs for us both in airbags in an upset that training and he also went with us to Kenya this year to give training to Kenya Wildlife Service. Wow fantastic and so you guys were were you coming back where you out on a training sortie Jordy or can you set the stage where it's what kind of flight was this. Sure so this was a we were at a meeting in Titusville about upset training and the weather is nice. Nice no problems in we as we got on the plane to leave. Jeff said Hey What an I fly and I said well you know it's left seats a little tricky to know plane there some little things things I want to show you? And I said it's it's getting laid out the slide this time next time. I'll put you in the left seat because he hadn't actually flown this airplane before and also there's no brakes on the right. Let's see the rudder pedals but they were stowed. I just didn't want to deal with with all that. And he goes okay so I jumped in the legacy but my seatbelt and and we took off and flew back. Who's better forty minute flight back to Saint Augustine? Yeah so important for people to know that. bonanza in this model of detail. Bonanza it has the throw over yoke doc and it also has the rudder pedals that you can stow so the idea. Was the person in the right seat. If you don't want them to has no ability to control the airplane whatsoever you take the okay the rudder pedals and it's just a nice comfortable seat for them. And that's how you had it configured for this Flight Right Act and I certainly wasn't worried about jeff flying the airplane plane. I just didn't want to have to deal with the checkout. It's got a it's got. These older details have The Piano Keys. And that's what controls the flaps APPs in the gear and the reverse from the newer airplanes so even a highly experienced pilot like jeff need to check out on how that works and it's a little awkward to operate. Operate those from the right seat upshur so till two different airplane for sure these these older planes And you have to be very careful not to go go back muscle memory with a new plan so I jumped in the left seat. We flew back Everything was eventful was nice weather. The traffic pattern was uh-huh nobody in the patrimony. Got Back to Saint Augustine and we were cleared to land landed. I landed a little bit long because my hangers down at the far end of runway. One the three To the South we touched down. The centerline Everything is very relaxed and fine and I was rolling out ahead about half flaps on and we were rolling out. I hadn't applied brakes yet. I was very careful with that airplane. It's an older plane and I never haunt on the brakes or you know applied the milliard sure. Yeah does it. Have the old goodyear breaks or or had it been upgraded to Cleveland Breaks. Has Cleveland breaks but I never want to put a lot of side load on the gear so so so just rolling out and all of a sudden the plane sort of ears right into the grass and jeff and I looked at each other. I grabbed the yoke can pulled it back and looked at. He said it's going into the grass. Like I said. Check the power because I have my hands full holding the outback and he checked the his hand on this model to make sure because it idle and meanwhile I tried to steer it with the brakes or the absurd with the rudder pedals and got nothing. I couldn't move them I thought I was just about to slow down and it hit a berm. The small firm. You wouldn't one of those in the grass that you would know is there and the plane started to go over over and we looked at each other and he said it's going over sh and it did it just went straight over tail over nose and ended up upside down on the graphs. Sounds like it just happened so quickly it was quick and It was really surprising. And just you know I mean you just just you in disbelief for a few moments. Just can't believe this actually happened. That's aviation sometimes right there. You are typical normal landing. Everything's fine then. You're slowing down to exit the runway and next thing you know the airplanes starts veer to the right. You run off the runway. You're upside down in a matter of probably less than a minute or two. When all that happened I don't know it's probably just you know thirty seconds? I'm guessing twenty seconds or something like that and I remember somebody saying to me longtime ago you know when accidents happen. They happen very very quickly. It's not something you can prepare for ahead of time. Yeah of course you can prepare everything you can for the you know the worst but when it actually happens you're not can have time to organize things And so as the plane was in. You guys realize we're going over. Did you have time to do anything. They're canaries for impact. Do anything you just have to brace so couple of things that were interesting won. The seat belts are older and the shoulder shoulder. Harnesses are a later addition to the plane. They didn't come shoulder harnesses in the initially and our shoulder harnesses where the kind of Chris cost kind that weren't on an inertial real. We had been wanting to change it but we had the older kind so that when they were on they were a little tight and it was awkward to reach Ford and Change Few uh uh switch fuel tanks and do some other things so what I normally would do is take off with the shoulder harness on and Then take it off in the air when I get up to altitude so I could switch tanks and things like that and then fly without the shoulder harness and a lot of times I have to say. I didn't put it on for landing. Even though I know a lot of times I did but there were times. I didn't in this case because it was a really short flight from Titusville and I knew I didn't have to switch tanks. Thanks consider some Feel management in these older planes. I left my shoulder harness on which was a little unusual for me if I hadn't left. mysolar harness ars on. I probably would have gotten hurt. And Jeff had a shoulder harness on too so we were really lucky with that so we had our differences on. Were upside down and I looked over and said are you okay and I remember being upside down on that Cessna six in nineteen eighty. Maybe to No earlier than that is probably Nineteen seventy-nine in remembered the pilot saying be careful. Be careful her yourself when you get out because there's been a lot of. I think there's been a lot of injuries for people when they upside down. They rip off their seat building. They hit their head and said okay be careful and I remembered it. So it's amazing. How these things are they stay with

"Can they bring him back to the championship. How's he going to mature. Oh you know i he was the the surprise pick for the lakers and the what he's turned out to be kept his team. Get them back to the playoffs. Can this happen. Can this happen. Will he be traded betrayed. You know how how much can he <hes>. You know get better and now for the first time i'm looking at a duda just worried about basketball. You know worried about just. I'm just i'm just here to hope now. Lie you mentioned the maturity that that we need to see from kuzina and one of the things i really liked was around summer league. You saw kouzmines palling around with lebron anthony any davis and it felt me like who's mma had a seat at the adult table right because last year there was the adults table that was like rondo and javale mcgee lance casey p. then you had a kid's table and that was coups monzo and ingram and then lebron at his own table correct and this this this summer it felt like coups was really a part of lebron and anthony davis and i think that's really important for the lakers but it's also important for kuzma's own self perception and really feel like okay. I am accepted as an integral part of a team that is led by one of the greatest players at after all these eight accept it but he i'm safe yeah. I'm safe now so if you so what ended said it's true that i do think he's been embraced by lebron davis but even if you go go back to when he was a rookie he's never been one to be shook by a moment he just he doesn't care he always has to self police he. I'm the kid out of flint. Y'all in believe me. You're going to do it again and the ship is on the shoulder but he is not a whiny chip. Some guys have a triple a shoulder and they use it as it's me against the world he doesn't have that he just has kind of like a quiet like all right. I'll show you and that to me is exactly what you need and we all know andy. We joke around about the liquor young guys as my kids in the past. He is the most mature of those guys in in a moment. I think like an eye on there but he's the guy that if you had to pick one lebron james is going to attract the defense cut in the whole with five seconds left. He's going to get the ball in the corner honor this year like he's. He's not gonna care about it in that in its own right whether he makes her mrs that in its own right is a big. I don't think kouzmine has the highest upside of the former laker kids. I think ingram had the highest upside of all of them. It'd be lonzo and lonzo if he could stay healthy. You know if nothing else lonzo has a very unique upside kuzina though i think is redsfest right now for for what lies ahead i think he is ready right now. He's also easier to fit with lebron like i think the upside even lebron with brandon ingram is higher than the upside of lebron with kuzina but it's harder to find the balance and unfortunately we were starting to see it before. Ingram got hurt low. Lebron ingram was starting to play really well together but kuzina is the simplest to make it work and the two of them have played really well together. <hes> trudell has kuzma. God is n._b._a. Body yet his grown n._b._a. Yet or is he still mature and internet body may be having a change just a little bit because you mentioned..

"ROY before, of course, does the play by plan radio. And he remembers the bleak days and obviously, you just referenced the time before they became this championship squad. Does that make you appreciate then what Toronto just accomplished in their history? It does it does. And I think that, you know, all fan bases when you go through the dark times, you appreciate the wonderful times, even more and you know, and and, and you also look at it teams like the Lakers that had been on top for so long missing the playoffs for six straight years, and you're like, hey, the warriors miss the playoffs. Seventeen out of eighteen seasons. You wanna talk misery your stack it up. Let's go. But what it does is your hardcore fans are rewarded for that patience. And that fervor that interest in your team, and it just kind of explodes in that all exultation when your team funny rises to the top, and you could feel that Toronto, not only with Kawais four bouncing jumper to be Philadelphia coming from tune up and down against Milwaukee. And now they win game one of the finals. And you know that is a fan base. It's tasting it for the very first time and it's. Fantastic. It's, it's what sports is about, and it's super fun. And so I think this series will be highly entertaining other being incredibly competitive, and it will hinge on several key players and several key plays. But in the end, you know, if Durant is able to come back, I think the worries we'll take care of things if, if they know you know, they could still win it, but Toronto's far more formidable in my mind than any of the Cleveland teams where your saw safe for the one year with Kyrie and LeBron Kyrie was real special that year but the other Cleveland teams were much more pedestrian than this Toronto team. And they had a much easier road to the east. I'm impressed with what the rappers have done to win the east this year, which was a significantly better conference than had been in previous seasons things that has impressed me about the warriors run is that while it is the same core and they added Kevin during a few years ago, the guys around them change. I mean outside of Iggy Livingston splash brothers, obviously, dream on there constantly turning over that bench. And, and I feel like that's one of the things that general manager, Bob Myers, doesn't get enough credit for they run into guys that have played on their roster everywhere like Patrick, McCaw, great example, on Thursday night in to me, it seems like that, that is constantly shifting sand with them as the role players and yet the system continues to bring them along so that they can also contribute, even if they're new. No, I mean, that's really perceptive Amy when you think about the first edition, you know, had Andrew Bogan and Harrison Barnes, but also Leandro, Barbosa and most spates and guys like that you transition to your javale, mcgee's, Pachulia, and David west, and, you know, they even had only Caspian Nick young and guys, you know, it just the system is not set up to have multiple all stars on the same team at the same time and financially. It's not set up for that. And that's why the big jump in the capital loud them to sign to rampant that will never exist again capital, never go up thirty million a year. And so you have with your. Stars. You know, Steph clay drain on. You know then he dollar Livingston were here as you mentioned. You do have to find and fill out the rest of the roster. And so this is now, hey, found Quinn cook and you got, you know, McKinney in Jonas Jerebko, and you know that even when javale McGee these were all guys that were reclamation projects or castoffs from various teams. And, and they fit into the war your system and the where your culture and then when called upon they answer the bell more often than not, and I look at Higa dollar who chose to be a warriors a free agent Aranda chose to be warriors for free agent and then DeMarcus cousins who chose to be warriors, a free agent. This was never the case in previous iterations of the warriors where players were pining to come be a warrior, and that's part of success and part of winning and part of Joe lake and Steve Kerr and, and Bob Myers for unearthing, you know that, that talent and letting them satellite around some of the greatest players. The league is ever seen just about thirty seconds of Bob, you mentioned. Boogie cousins. He was back tonight. Do you think that they should extend him a contract does he does he fit? I think from a talent standpoint, you know, DeMarcus is always gonna fit, and, you know, the warriors have Damian Jones is a young centers on a one year deal. And they have to resign Kvant looney otherwise they can be pretty naked upfront. You know, the question for DeMarcus is he would have been a huge financial, you know player had he not had the achilles injury. So he signed the one year mid level. The warriors can only offer him six point one million that, that's the most under the whole system. But the one hundred twenty five percent raise, I think from a talent standpoint, I know for mckinstry standpoint, he fit in incredibly well, and but him coming back on a one year kind of lesser money deal. I gotta think that teams around the league offer them significantly more. And it'll just be kind of a financial thing in the warriors will shake his hand and say, thank you for for the time here. But obviously given the limited years in anyone's career, you gotta max out financially. And no one will be grudge him that Bob FitzGerald with NBC sports bay area. Has been with these warriors for years and years as their play by play voice on TV. Always great to grab a couple of minutes. Thank you so much for your time. Anytime me, just give me Busby happy to chat with you. It's always fun. Is good to talk to Bob. We'll get to grab him every now and then the warriors well in the bay area as a whole they've got some incredible broadcasters that have been in place for a long time. And I always appreciate the perspective, especially with those who've been with the warriors, because they remember when this team and this franchise was bottom of the barrel. Gum on the bottom of your shoe. All right. We'll take your calls coming back. Eight five five two.

"How's it going? Going out of his good. I'm not I'm not pleased with my Lakers, though. Yeah. Yeah. The front office is unbelievable. I cannot believe was going only if everyone in the league barely trust Robson leaker where we hold Why loud. do we have on eating the key for him to say there? Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I think this is this is a question that a lot of people are asking why rob? Why rob? What is if you look at the last year the track record? And you know, we'll never know exactly. What was magic? We'll never know. What was exactly rob? But rob certainly presided as general manager over some very bad basketball decisions from the choices that remained last summer, which included John Rondo, and Michael Beasley and land. Stevenson, javale McGee all the way through the trade deadline, which was an unmitigated disaster. As every young player got hung out to dry trying to make an Anthony Davis trade all the way to the end of the season. When vizsla zoo bots who showed promise was suddenly flipped for Mike Moskal who turned out to be a non factor. It's unclear why rob Pelinka or why Jeannie thinks the rob Pelinka is the right guy for this job when she could have her. Pick of basketball executives have her pick and she's sticking with rob. Thanks for the phone call. I'm going to read something. Remember, I told you I've been talking to a lot of Laker fans. Yes. I'm going to read you something. From a Laker fan that you know. Okay. I'll tell you who it is at the end. Okay. I don't need to hear insults. Hurled genie bus or anyone else in the organization. That's scapegoating explains. Nothing it is petty and without substance. I know they need to hire a smart experienced president of basketball operations, duh. The Lakers had not made the playoffs in six years and this year with the season on the line all the players eligible except for Lonzo. They lost a crucial game in Phoenix. To the sons. There is a weakness of Malays in the organization. It is breaking my heart. One problem in thing. I've heard from the Lakers at all levels of the organization and from the local media are three falsehoods. Laker fans only care about winning championships..

"Well, you guys are both doing the alway. Meanwhile. L Z right now is in like third grade teacher. I'll wait. No. He's in grade student Malaysia one of those guys that I don't know what I want to do with which is what I was going to say if I was really interrupted by a really irritating producer. I'm gonna I'm gonna shake it. I'm gonna shake it because he's not what he was defensively. It sounds better. The reason why such a long time to figure out what I wanted to do with an simply because Rosh interrupting me rudely. It was also because there are a lot of things he does pod Sidley, and he's been really good influence on Lonzo as a player in the locker room. So when I think about him overall, I'm going, okay? When he plays he could be a defensive viability, but when he's playing, well, he's not by the ways locker room guy. But I think overall I'm going to shake over Amish shake it to and for those reasons you brought up his particularly defensively he has become a serious liability when he's out there and offensively on in games where he's not really set up dudes numbering else lot else to the table. And I think they they need to go in a different direction. Javale McGee take shake. I'm going to take it. I'm gonna take it. But I don't want that to be my starting center. Yeah. As long as long as I can bring them in and kick the tires on him like five five or ten minutes a game to see what he's bringing. Because look he threw stretches where he's getting double doubles. He's playing..

"Might not mean a whole lot. But then again Denver right there in the hunt for the best record in the west with Golden State. Say you never know. I can't remember Mark. The last time I've seen a Western Conference race battle down like this. I do remember like the eight nine spot somebody on the verge of not make less Denver. Minnesota is a virtual the final game. This season doesn't have that. You know, the eighteen for the most part. But where will they end up in Utah would love to get home court has Power corP referred to before the ball? Cephalonia split. The free throws one zero seven hundred eight Utah Lakers. Have it four forty four to go as Jonathan Williams boats. It out the Machado at half court child. Feeds Williams rolling dishes to begin with long. Right arm. N easy flush for javale McGee yet. The east is interesting to to see how it will finish, you know, the four five positions right now with Indiana Boston. Then of course, six seven eight nine and Charlotte still involved at the ten spot is Ricky Rubio great pass on a spinning bear with an absolute flush over javale McGee. I can go the big. Sitting on double doubles Dunkin on each other. Twenty two and ten forgo bear, that's double double numbers, sixty K C P for three no rebound control by the jazz with four minutes to go here at vivid smart home arena at Salt Lake City. I ninety Rubio foul as he looked to penetrate. A lot of traffic. Oh, setting a screen, and they'll be two shots coming for Rudy Gobert Fowler. Jonathan Williams is whether this is Dwayne Wade's last season or not I would love to see Miami in the playoffs. That'd be interesting. Yeah. There was just a half game out ROY later with a big win over Miami last night. Yeah. To take over that eighth seed, right? That's a fun team to watch to Nikola vuckovich as go bare missus and the first of two Utah not putting us gave away for free throw line down the stretch. Nine ninety nine ninety leave for an instant soup stretch from line this year like shooting sixty three percent on the year, but Marchi shoot seventy one and in February shut fifty three. And so many goes nine for eleven in the last ball game tonight. He's missing some just missed two in a row after making his first four Lakers on the drive floater McGee. No tip Makino another tip in the air. And finally goes out of bounds last touched by talking Lakers keeping that one live with three forty two to go trailing Utah Jazz by nineteen points. You've been talking about the efficiency of the Utah Jazz tonight, thirty three assists and touting thirty one on Monday and the win over Phoenix. They really don't know another way to play. At it knocked away by Rudy Gobert, the reigning defensive player of the year. And he wants to be the two-time defensive player of the year. The league here's angles penetrating McGee. Got the shot knocked did pass out was kicked by the Lakers shot clock. Resets a fourteen jazz. Have it on the far side when I say, they don't know another way to play by that. I mean, there's not a lot of guys on their team that are going to beat somebody off at dribble. Donovan Mitchell can do it. But the rest of the guys really rely on the coordination and the play calling.

Lakers couldn't stop Joel Embiid or anybody else for that matter by Lecce in yesterday. He probably have got twenty points. The defense was awful bad because Lakers wasted thirty nine from. Kuzma. Nineteen from Ingram to me. It seems like forever since he's scored double digits javale McGee had twenty one points. Lebron them, you're a triple double. And you waste all that. Because you can't play defense on the seventy Sixers dot granted. Seventy Sixers Mason trades are better team. They're pretty good. But the Lakers for about two and a half quarters hung with them just fine, and they are ever seen like every time the bench came in yesterday. Like, they would start falling in love with threes and shooting threes, and and miss and then the Lakers just kept getting farther and farther makers lost by twenty three in Philly. Thank goodness. Their next game is against a very horrible hawks team. Oh, we should win that. And by the way, we makers go to Atlanta. It's like a home game because there's so many Laker fans in Atlanta from LA. Yes. AT L Garcia Laker fan. Everywhere. So it's great mess on least excited that maybe we can get back on a winning shoe chain that big fat. And listen a magic was in Philadelphia. You know, he was over there doing damage control with all the young guys making sure they're out of their feelings after almost being traded, which seemed to work a little bit. They played pretty well. But he also spoke about the pelicans treating the Lakers like customers at a strip club. Listen to basically at the end of the day. And we knew when we first. Yeah..

Oh that is brutal. That is hold on. Savage. Have you seen the thirty for thirty of the Nixon originally a couple other couple were wrinkled in there? Those indie people not as nice as you think. Yeah. And jailed McGee responded on Twitter with two trophies on Twitter after the game. You don't play which means that did get to of course. No. But you don't play there anymore. If you stay in the avid sure, but you don't play anymore. Ingram's responded. You gotta see that. What did you say? I made a free throw. Respond. I just think that's funny. And you know, kind of I mean, do you believe that this thing that the pelicans have basically encountered in like mental warfare because win worst kind of lewd to that earlier. I'm trying to find the sound here. Yeah. Rachel brought it up to Brian and t- Mak earlier. And here's how that went that the pelicans set the Lakers up. Do you think that they were upset enough? I have no knowledge. I'm just throwing out a question that they were upset enough with what they have made clear they felt like was tampering and they felt like that they were going into reach in after their player, and 'cause all this destruction in the middle of the season when they thought they had at least two this summertime. Do you think that they never intended to really engage with the Lakers that much kept putting out publicly all these trade offers? So that we saw last night it would ruin their team chemistry at least temporarily disrupt all their young guys make things miserable for this team. Is that possible? It's possible. It's what happened. He alluded continue there and just kinda laborat- more. But do you buy that? Do you believe that that that was part of the plan? Yes. And no, I think yes, the plan is to squeeze as much value as you can. And sometimes that is posturing in and playing these sorts of mind games. But also bought them enough time to see again to buy Harris got four big traded form, right, right? Like, I don't want to prematurely do a deal and then realize oh, man these teams out here, we're dealing. So it gives them more of a solid footing to say a six to eight pick request when they can point to look look what's going on the going price. Obviously what you're saying makes sense with the timing not wanted to set the market wanna see what other. But you think there's a part of them a petty part? That's very annoyed with rich, and how this is all gone down. Yes. But I also I think one of the pitfalls everyone's fallen into in this conversation is idea that this is a binary conversation that it's either Boston or LA, and that's it. There's no door number three. And and and we talked about it yesterday the podcast if you didn't hear it because we never show a mean in I in Kevin pelton and Bobby Mark's been. Yeah. Subscribe rate and review because we wanna throw a big bleeping party on March night. We've actually lowered the bar 'cause municipal top-five was to was too lofty. She basically shot us down. So I said top twenty top twenty. We're having the party rate and review got Donald show podcast. It wasn't excellent podcast yesterday. With a mean myself, Kevin pelton and Bobby marks talking about all this nonsense. But go ahead. Yeah. I think I think the idea is that ending Davies wants to be traded. And he wants to be traded to somewhere where he has a chance to be successful in the team level are the. Acres of preference. Sure. But I don't think he's kind of blinders on if Slegers bust, and so there might be a situation and rises again, if they wait till draft time, and then if the number one overall pick and they said Bom what about Zion Williamson package, right? And then you turn around and say, okay, we got AD, and we can sign K D, And we can go out and get another another guy that I mean that that could change a lot of minds. And so I think this situation's very fluid not just in in terms of when it's going to happen..

"John Brickley with you in the studio with a change a course in this third quarter for the Lakers as the warriors not listening to their head coach, Steve Kerr's massive. We've gotta make sure our guys don't let your guard down. We play them two weeks ago in LA without LeBron and handled them easily. So that's probably the first thing on our players mind is okay. Won't be a problem and that's dangerous. So we gotta get him. Getting ready. No matter who's up LA, outscoring Golden State by eight in this third quarter, yet the lead is down to three back to Oakland once again alongside John Barry, here's marquess to sure. Thanks a lot the Marcus cousin gave me on the bench. But he seems to have a knighted for your comeback here at the first quarter. Ten points in the quarter refer DeMarcus in fabric, dunks credit LA, forty nine percents you and they've got the warriors all the way down to fifty one percent. Here's Rondo coming out of the time out, but deep right corner pass was tipped, by etc. Intended for Casey, turnover, etc. The other way. Golden State back with it on. Eleven three road and our foul down court as Brandon Ingram was driving. But this game has completely taken a turn. And they're all other feet at the onto ducks basically to wake up. Orders. Jake dollar. We've staring down javale McGee on his way back down the floor about three percent marine about an hour and a half ago. Always on a looney side out Lakers in the Rondo four and a half to go in the third. The Laker lead is down to launch. All well, toll drives to the left to the elbow rises. Fires and hits contagious. Caldwell-pope has a dozen. Woken up here in the third quarter. Eighty three eighty that quiets the crowd or the oracle momentarily curry, by the way is over eight Steph. Curry sounds passed to looney lobbed for the ramp. Nope. They tried to find a dollar, but it takes a while. Karen back to looney nine to shoot outside. Ega dollar guarded by McCain is passed goes off the foot of McGee. That'll be a shot clock. Reset the fourteen loonies going to recognise wide open. He's three feet from the rim. And decides to throw a law Bali across the chorus. Klay Thompson after that. Unbelievable personnel. He didn't take a shot. I believe in the second the third quarter. We stuck at twenty three points and remarkably Steph curry has no field goals. Here's Kevin Durant with nineteen sixteen footer off the back. Iron contested rebound saved by Rondo right to Brandon Ingram. Eighty three eighty Lakers lead. No LeBron James tonight as they were on Christmas day late in the third quarter. They want here here's Ingram. Spins on looney spins to the free throw line tries to get contact Mr. shot. No, call McKinney. The rebound. Down three or comes etc. And the warriors front court at the top. Greeted by javale McGee McKinney on the right into Taran in the mid post turns into a double team fires to Ludi outside etc. Passes up the shot six to shoot Durant offense afoul on the Lakers. Kevin Durant gets called the three fifteen. And we're gonna double technicals here Taran and Josh heart. I believe gotta do a JV. They're still talking. Kevin durant? Flipped the ball at heart. He caught it. And he flipped it. Back durant. Both get technical vows. Rivalries getting a little heated between Golden State in L A where the road team has had success at every game. So far this season series right now with his line at the worries have on the court is the Lakers are not guarding McKinney from the three point line not guarding good and not guarding looney. And so it's double team kept. Kevin durant? Double team Steph curry and make one of those other three make shots. Outcomes. Toronto Lakers buzz to a ten point later the third quarter have a three point spread. Here's Rondo to the right picks up the dribble. Passes up top to heart. Swingset left side Ingram eight to shoot three minutes to go in the third insight. Mcgee in the mid post, spins to the baseline fouled on a shot that ricocheted off the side of the board and late in the clock. And we'll have two free. Throws for beginners McKinney. Did a nice job. "Is this your math that came up with our pools being thirty eight today because I've seen him play. Yeah. Missing about five years five. Okay. I just want to make sure that that maybe fifty eight. What's also, you we play for Albert let me think about that. That's a good one. That's a good one. All right Lakers win last night. They beat the bulls. And we heard Luke Walton say this a couple of nights ago after that they after they lost to the Cleveland. Cavaliers mayo every every game it feels like we're giving up thirty plus points in the first quarter. So we'll take a closer look at that. I really thought we'd come out with little better energy. And you know, by the end of the gains. We're doing a nice job of of stabilizing our defense and getting the stops we need, but we can't just keep giving up thirty points to start the game. So we'll we'll take a look at that and possibly make a change before Tuesday. So he's talking about making a change before Tuesday, which of course was last night. And he did make a change that the starting lineup was different that Josh heart and javale McGee out of the starting lineup. PCP enticing. Chandler into the starting lineup. And I thought that you made a really interesting point earlier that that could be more than just I'm gonna take hard and McGee out. That's more of a hey, everybody's on notice starting right now. Because if we keep going up thirty points, this isn't gonna work for me. You're going to cost me my job last night. They did a better job. Chicago only had eighteen Lakers will hit nineteen but did a much better job in that first. You you you've make a change because you put a guy in Jovana McGee back in a role that he's kinda custom to which is coming off the bench where he was a starter. Will you may have given him too much as rim-protector that wasn't necessarily hadn't been rejected protecting the rim recently. And you get a guy like Tyson Chandler who is has been a starter for a long time whose role who understands that particular row. So you kind of play with a little bit. But at the same time, you kind of those other guys sitting there going, okay, he moved him. He pushed he pushed him out the way. So I gotta step up my game. The other thing with Chandler to. Specifically is this. He's vocal the. Mcgee is an energy guys gonna come in. He's going to run the court. He's gonna dunk. He's going to block shots. He's going to do those sorts of things, but he's not necessarily a vocal player on the court. That's not what he does Tyson Chandler has been in the league for a million years. There's nothing he hasn't seen. There's nothing that he's going to be intimidated by he's comfortable of saying anything to anybody at any point that I think that was part of it as much as anything is put the if LeBron Rondo or on the rack if they're hurt and they can't play the next most veteran voice in this on this team is Tyson Chandler, if they're not getting that push that leadership than energy right out of the chute, then Chandler can give him that. He can't. And that's I think that's what you saw a little bit in the second half of yesterday gave them what they were looking for. In a veteran leader that's on the floor at knows how to play basketball. Luke Walton was asked whether or not this is going to stick around. Now that it worked one for one. I loved her defensive intensity to start. I can tell you that. And I thought I carried throughout the game. I got to, you know, get into okay? See look at their teams look at our matchups in. And then we'll make it. We'll make that decision tomorrow. The next day. That's got to be tough thing. We were talking about what the ramps that at the end of the season when the Rams were kind of wobbling a little bit when they dealt with Philadelphia and Chicago and didn't look very good. And then they had the Niners in the zone of cardinals on the back end. And they looked a lot better. It's how much of it is. The addition is C J Anderson and alteration in a game plan getting a little bit healthy doing this doing that..

"As we've seen in years past. We've seen them have bogut. We've seen them have javale McGee. You look at those two players. They are seven footers speed on the court intern. I'm so running direct line to the rim. The Golden State Warriors don't have that guy in the more that guy made Steph curry game, very valuable to me. It also make Klay Thompson game very valuable because now you got two great shooters coming off, and you pretty much got two defenders that are going to close out to them, and they got seven foot rim run run into the rim. They don't have that peace and that causes them. A lot is forced they're shooting percentage because they're not getting easy baskets anymore. Is we watch for years clay driving the lane getting layups that's not happening now because they don't have that seven foot guy wanting to the rim and everybody is getting better teams. Getting better teams of starting to close the gap on them. So last night's game two to me was really not about them closing out. It was about the Houston Rockets are showing that they can score the basketball as well as they can. Yeah. Didn't this one and we give hardened credit for putting amazing? Capelli you mentioned at the top of the show Capella had a rockstar game night. Right. Gordon started hitting in the third in in the third quarter in the fourth quarter. The rockets weren't making their threes the first half, and then they made them in the second half. And as you said, that's a credit them right shooting. Even even when you have a disastrous game seven, but the other part of this is a hope I'm wrong, but serious disease of me with the warriors really get serious vibes that agenda that was in place three years ago four years ago, even to even last year has changed into an individual agendas. Lot of grumpy grumbling grumbling complaining complaining complaining that and dictionary where we're gonna add that to Paul Pierce dictionary. Yeah. I I just I got a bad since I got a bad feeling about any evidence for this bad feeling about this strength in numbers, then and I think what we're seeing now is instead of the five fingers closed fist to the strength. In numbers. You see in five fingers to do their own thing for their own different reasons. I do think the habits or thing we've talked all certainly last season. But even this season before about the Cleveland Cavaliers and defensive just sort of giving up that they were doing and not rotating all really basic defensive principles. They weren't practicing during the regular season. And sure enough during the NBA finals, and again, I'm not even talking about the most recent one because it was a whole bunch of bag of issues, but the one before it they suddenly had to play defense, and they weren't doing the things they couldn't they couldn't just stamp their new the things that they hadn't been doing all season. So I get it. And you've said here a lot and talked about how when you're in one of these dynasty teams. It is hard to get motivated during the regular season. But these are bad habits to some degree and teams like the rackets are going to keep coming. I look this up while you're giving your answer in both of you three Petes in the third year. You guys won the least amount of games out of the other three championship years. And so that's part of it is just part of injuries. You can throw in there. But yes as a team, you do get a little bit laidback during the regular season, and you get a little bit complacent, but that's part of winning because you know, what the ultimate goal is. And it's just about getting there again can't spend all the few China win regular season fans, of course, will answer back at this whole segment and going yes in Scotty won a title in both of those third years of those three Petes, and they think they will too that that is the answer until someone beats them coming up while Leonard booed early and often last night in his return to San Antonio after the game he played he blamed the medium where his with the Spurs is that fair we will try to be there in answering that it is time for our distant replay..

And he's going to get the crap out of him. Yeah. Like, I it's going to be uncomfortable. I'm actually curious. I mean, there's not a question of if he will get booed. It's a question of how bad will the booze be in comparison to other booze that we've heard going to get? Yes. Hammers hammer. I can't maybe I'm been wrong about stuff before. Like when when Randall was in town before it's like people going to people are gonna be nice to him. Right. Be nice to Joe he did was work really hard and kind of leave and not get paid. Right. And so he didn't really do anything. But there were there were couple smattering meal. But then everybody else was cool. Like, thanks joyous. Hey, we appreciate like, Paul George. He flat stood up the Lakers. And then complained that they didn't want him enough. French is why he did it just fine. But that's going to get you booed. Yeah. He's getting really booth because. Like, not only did his he sort of flirted with them to write like his parents would sit courtside. And he would give these quotes that the all star game that we're like very tally. I mean, he and LeBron talked about playing together..
LA Lakers Sign Michael Beasley
"Let's get to it. The Lakers keep adding to their roster this off season. Multiple reports. The Lakers have agreed to a one year deal with Michael Beasley was a teammate of LeBron's in Miami Beasley was the number two overall pick in two thousand eight, but has had a history of drug issues during his career. Last year, he averaged about thirteen points per game with the Knicks and the Lakers already at it. Rajon Rondo land Stevenson and javale McGee this off season. We're joined by EVA's one NBA analyst. Chris. I'm gonna get this one starting with skip because I wanna know what you think. What is going on here just for the record, I've covered the NBA even longer than my main Chris Broussard. I started covering the NBA when I was at the LA times back in nineteen seventy seven, and I covered these Los Angeles Lakers. So I've been around for a little while and I've seen thing or to this team now sets up as the most difficult to coach team. I can ever remember. Maybe I'm forgetting one somewhere along the trail, but I don't think so because let me just count the ways. Michael Beasley love is game, loved him before his draft. He's been on seven teams and eleven years for reason. Rajon Rondo has been on six teams in the last five years for a reason land. Stevenson has been on seventeen in the last six years for a reason. Nj, all McGee has been on sixteen eleven years for various reasons. They're all in different ways, extremely difficult to coach from night tonight. They can be moody, they can be. Unpredictable. They can be a little knuckle headed in their own various ways. This is now the NBA's version of the expendable 's and I can't believe that LeBron James signed off on all four of them because I'm pretty sure magic had to take each one of these still LeBron say, you good, you good, you good. He's had history with all four in various ways playing for or against them or with an or against them. And it's like he now has the equivalent of four JR Smith on his team. Not that Rondos knuckle headed. He can just be difficult high basketball, I q Doc. Rivers finally said, I just can't coach him because he thinks he's the coach of my team thinks he knows more than I do. He was the driving force behind New Orleans rise last year into the plows past Portland in the first round. It was highly impressive. And then the pelicans said, no, no, no, we we're not going to go for with Rondo because he's difficult to coach. So all the sudden porn Luke Walton at age thirty eight is sitting. In the volatile mix that he's surrounded with with a lot of bench players who are going to want minutes and make waves of if they don't get their minutes and he's got a lavar ball, sort of hanging over his head from above and you never know which night lavar is just going to go off on Luke Walton and say, the team has quit on him or he should be fired or whatever. So if this team does get off to a little bit of a rocky, start, my Mandla Shannon Sharpe says, yes, it could get off to a rocky start. Everybody thinks that this is going to become a rough mix. You know where the fingers are going to get points early on. The thirty eight year old head coach down at the end of the bench, right? And again, LeBron is going to have to help him coach his team. If in fact, he signed off on these four guys, but I'm gonna remind you. There's been a long running theme in the league that I, I heard around the San Antonio Spurs back in Stephen Jackson days, and I love Stephen Jackson, but he was considered early on in his career despite all of his game and all of his intangibles in character that he did have basketball character. He was considered a knucklehead. He could do knucklehead things in..
Lakers, LeBron James and LeBron discussed on First Take
"What's going on. Everybody welcome. I take Molly came here and we have some major. Exciting news here on I take. I am so happy. So Maxon Stephen may be on vacation, but they are getting ready to take on the Big Apple. I take officially moving to a new studio in New York City. The debut show airs on Labor Day, September, third. So we may be changing the location, but you can still expect the same hot towards debate. And of course, lots of special guests and surprises to welcome the show to New York in speaking of a voice. I miss Steven, you're on the phone. Hey, how's vacation going in your discreet location? Disclose location? Yes. I'm loving loving. Neely, I, you know, I relaxed enough to get ready to beat up on Maxwell another year. And what have you that's a given look comes with the territory, but I mean credibly excited that we're moving to New York City both myself and maximum native New Yorkers. It's been a long time coming. It's something that pleaded in baseball for years, and finally it's happening. So I'm incredibly excited. Yes, I am Stephen, I cannot wait. And I think one of the major things I'm excited about is obviously, you know, it's the mecca for for a lot of things, especially I still consider the NBA as well. And I think certain guests will be able to get there in a lot of other surprise and stuff will have for the show. So I think it'd be major, but I, I know you have to be kind of sad because you're not going to have to drive up to bristle anymore. You're not gonna come up here. You know what it is. It is a very, very sad day because I mean, what's not to love about Bristol, Connecticut. I mean. ESPN down the block that there's a McDonald's and and and and and a ruby Tuesdays and stuff like that. I've really, it's really sad that I'm not going to be able to be there because I'm going to be in new you most times and on occasion, I'll find myself with John and feed and Dominic in LA. I mean my God, it's such a tough tough situation, but I think I'll say, I can't wait and obviously can't wait at four t with you guys. Now that'll be on your home city, but saving, I'll tell team soon. I hope you are actually relaxing for some reason. I don't believe you, but please do that because you know, once you're back, you're back. Just know this when I'm back copy ready, then I'll tell, sorry my condolences to Mexico element in advance must've taken. It's about to be out. All right, Steven, Al. Talk to you soon. All righty. Thank you. Congratulations, Shane. Okay. So we have a first day moving to the Big Apple catch us every day at ten eastern starting on September. Third. Sports right now. I'm at Collins, new Denver Nuggets. Point guard. Isaiah Thomas is sitting down with our MBA insider h. g. now ski, I t who signed a one year two million dollars contract with the nuggets. Last week opened up to watch telling him this free agency was flat out disappointing, the twenty nine year old who continues to fight the perceptions of his help. One onto say, quote, people know that I've earned deserve the Bax contract, and that's the only reason why I didn't get paid what I deserved because I got injured. I get that. The biggest thing for me was to get to the best opportunity for me this summer and show that I'm healthy. You can read. We'll just four article on Thomas right now on ESPN dot com. Staying in the NBA with Kawai heading to Toronto on the broad in Los Angeles. We're looking ahead to who are the best and worst team heading into the season where than forty ESPN reporters, insiders and editors came out with a new set of power rankings. You'd think with James in Los Angeles Lakers at least at the. Five think again, no surprise. The warriors are on top, but three of the top five teams are from the Eastern Conference, the Lakers checking nine, but that's only the six best among Western Conference teams. Let's get back to. I takes Tony. Thank you the Lakers outing. Another piece to help LeBron next season's dining, Michael Beasley to a one year deal. As you just heard the Lakers are number nine in our latest NBA tower, rankings Mazel serve with you. Do think the Lakers or more likely to surprise us as upcoming season or disappoint, you know, I'm a huge Lakers fan. I think they are more likely to disappoint what fortunately with you to say that look. I mean, there are some really interesting piece. I liked the addition of Michael Beasley. They need shooters, but there are some really challenging personalities on this roster land Stevenson and Ray John Rondo and javale McGee. And now Michael Beasley, the expectations are so high for this team. And I think ultimately we're talking about a team that's going to be the six to seven seed. I think in the Western Conference I would never count LeBron. But LeBron James, I don't think has ever been on a team that has finished six or seven in its conference. I think it's going to be a very, very tough challenge for Luke. Walton debt may be the toughest job in the NBA right now, balancing those personalities, balancing those egos and keeping LeBron James happy. Can I respond to Mr. happy over here? Does he need to get in there and say, as I like to say, my real job is at the as the Lakers radio play by play guy. This is going to be great. It's going to be a fascinating lab experiment. Number one, we got LeBron look at the roster LeBron had last year in Cleveland compared to this roster this wrestlers just as good, maybe better. I can't wait to see how these pieces come to. And keep in mind. The Lakers young guys are all getting ready to make a jump. Brandon Ingram doubled his statistical numbers. Last year, Josh Hart was just the MVP of summer league Lonzo ball's coming off of a minor knee surgery, but I expect him to get better this year and Kyle Kuzma was the steal of the draft. I can't wait to see what this Lakers team looks like with will run as the leader. The games are going to be ridiculously exciting, and most of all, we're not going to be losing anymore. I've suffered through five straight losing seasons. The end of that is here, and I think that the Lakers are going to surprise a lot of people in the opposite of Mason. Dominique. I think the Lakers are, if you look at that roster, there's some real possibilities. I think I agree with you in part because I don't think the expectations are very high expectations are pretty low for this team right now. All the reporting about other opinions about this team is that they're the. Main team there. They're a bunch of guys who are wildcards and is no way that you can put together. And it seems like every other week, the Lakers are coming out trying to defend their roster construction and try and explain to us what they're thinking. I think what they're trying to put together as a smart team of bunch of guys who have veteran experience that are adaptable on defense can pass pretty well not as many shoot as you would like to see. But they have a couple of shooters. I think they have a decent team and they have a guy by the name of LeBron James. I don't know if you guys watch the playoffs last year, watch any basketball. James is pretty damn good, and he makes your team a contender immediately. So I think that's -tations are low. So I think they will surprise and then you look at the Western Conference. I think we talk about how heavy how stack the Western Conference is often. I think that's a bit oversold, but to be honest, you look at some of these teams that you think LeBron's going to be worse than Utah. LeBron's going to be worse than Portland LeBron's going to be worse than Denver. Like I know they're good teams, young teams that are getting better, but he's LeBron James and he has a young good coach. Luke Walton wa think is flexible and smart enough to make this team good. I think expectations are low so they will surprise Molly. Where are you on this? They're going to surprise disappoint. What do we think? What do I think people are expecting? Tell me that for fifty wins is what the expectation is an wouldn't you agree make the Ryan that just came out, said that they were ninth in the Powell ratings, right? The ratings ESPN pirating said they're nice night than they're not yet pulling up pulling up the radio. That'd be about right because there's three Eastern Conference teams, so that would put them four, five, six in the state. I think the expectations are Western Conference finals and.
