"Is up one hundred and two more ham figures into it. Welcome to download where we cover the most interesting technology stories of the week. I am Jason Snell. And I'm joined us always by Stephen Hackett. Hello, Steven Hackett. Hello jason. Snow? Welcome back to the show s we're we're here together talking about topics talking about Thursday is what we do on. It's like it's a Thursday, and we're joined this week by somebody. I've known I don't even want to think how long I've known this person. He is a senior editor Tom's guide. It's Philip Michael's. I fell. Hello. How are you today? I I'm doing podcast. It's my Thursday morning podcast day today. How are you? Well, well, I hope you've got a good game coincidence today. I'll have known. No, you are first choice this week. Yeah. Yeah. It's a running gag that you fill in when people can't. Yes. But you actually this week. No, I was actually in and there's no other guests on so you or screw you. That's right. Tune away. Now, if you must topic number one though is about apple we're going to talk about Facebook and a little bit. But I want to start with an apple stuff. Apple's financial results came out this week interesting in that the iphone sales were still down year over year. And yet it seems like everybody in the stock market, basically has now internalized the fact that that was going to happen. And of course, when stock prices move, it's because of what what the market knows not what is not what actually is announced. And so this was assumed it's just interesting because apple valuation went back over a trillion, which kind of kind of funny big story. I think is probably the services revenue which continues up Apple's been plugging that for four years now it's now twenty percent of Apple's overall revenue..

"Hello, Steven Hackett. Hello, Jason snow funny week this week. I thought in terms of headlines there was there were stuff that there was not a lot of like earth shattering stuff. But there was lots of little interesting bits. And then also there were electric cars. There are lots of electric cars. We get to to have some some car chat later in the show looking forward to that. We're going to have one of our pals who cares about electric cars, and cares about cars a lot. Join us. He he he is on cars. Let's just Altis at that way. He sits on cars all the time on the top. I tell them to get off. And he just like, no, I'm going to sit right here on the road of this car that could be dangerous getting into the seats you all right anyway. But let's get to the most interesting non Kar related stories of the week as chosen by me, and Stephen and we start with. Fitbit. So apple talks about how great the apple watch is doing. They put it in context of watches. And what is also going on is that there's this other category that is fitness trackers which looking exactly like watches and apple is a fitness tracker. But it's got much more serious competition. I would say in the fitness tracker part of the world than it does in the why part of the world, and what can you tell me about the versa light as an interesting device or this is bits. It's looks like a smart watch it runs their fit bit. Which remember they bought? Pebble awhile back. They've incorporated some of that stuff, but it is not a full a full stack. Smartwatch. So it doesn't have fi or NFC or music playback like the some of its other models. This is them rounding out their product line with a less expensive less complex option. But it kind of gives you enough to get done. So it does all your regular finish tracking. You can swim with it. Which is great. It will also. Like download updates and store data and sync with your smartphone later..

"My name is my colleague I'm joined by Jason. Hi, Jason snow are Mark early. How are you? Very. Well, Jason snow very well. Indeed. We have a hashtag Snell toll question from CONNER and Kana wants to know Jason when you're wearing only one episode or when you take an airport out of your ear, which one do you take out? Left right. Okay. That's very I. I don't know. Why does this make me left brained? I always when I'm holding a phone to my ear or if I've got one ear bud in. It's always in my right ear. And I it's not like I have a hearing issue in my left ear. I just whenever I'm holding a phone to my left ear it feels completely wrong. Okay. So my my right. My right ear I will also as a bonus I will point out that as miraculously as the the airports are. I my ears are itchy. And I hate it that if I have to scratch one of my ears and take out one of the year pods that the that the podcast. I'm listening to stops. I should probably do something about that. But it's such a good feature all the rest of the time. But it was moments where I'm like, no, I don't I don't wanna scratch. I don't wanna scratch because I don't want to stop listening to. Oh god. I gotta take the gotta scratch my year now. Yep. I don't like that. That's a that's a. It's an issue. They should have like a anti-itch plastic on it or something. Anyway. Right. The right right is the answer. If it's the pulse specifically making your is. No, no, they just they just anyway. But then I have the air pot in there. I I wonder if I should get some sort of like a technique where I where I like bring my finger up and like touch the proximity sensor, and then carefully lifted away. But I don't think that'll work. I think it will. I think you'll know that the is up and problem won't let me scratch your wall. Still listening with the takeout my right and a punt. And I think I know why this is because the right side is where the controls of always being for iphone abuts and for like, I put it right stuff. Dangling dangling controls are on the way. That's right, volume and the buttons and stuff. So I think I'm used to when I want to change something my right arm goes up to my ear. You know, like it goes up towards my in. So that's why I take the right one out. That's that's my theory. Anyway, stick into it. All right. Thank you on for this very peculiar. But somewhat interesting question on the lesson. That is what we love here, the hashtag, snow talk. Yeah. I think that is like an archetypal Snell thought question, which is personal very specific..

"Like, I said he's doing great now, which is a big blessing and indeed the Mak per user community was part of that. Yeah. Sure. We talked about on the show. And I know I heard from several listeners that donated and everybody's in there. With you on this. Yeah. I that means the world to us. It really does. Well, we're going to talk about all your knee, geeky and nerdy stuff. You do. But you also have few hobbies outside of collecting old max. So what are those? Yeah. So you know, I spend my day in my studio working at a computer, and like a lot of people like a lot of people like a lot of free agents. Hobby kind of became my job. So I really try to spend time outside the office doing the things that I love and so those for me at least include a lot of bike riding. Now, the kids have come along doing hobbies with them. So like when I was a kid, I was really into model rocketry with my dad, and we've my dad, and I sort of force that on my kids, thankfully, they accepted it and so like doing model rocketry with them. Our oldest son is cub scouts do a lot of stuff with the pack and outdoor stuff with them. But you know, for me bike riding going fishing going for a walk in the woods, kind of decoupling from the tech is the. The best way for me to sort of reset. If I need some time away, and so very often if I get a free afternoon or it's a nice weekend. I'll go out for several hours on a bike ride. No podcast listening. No music just sort of like, unplug and think or sometimes not think and just get out into the world summit, get some fresh air and sunshine, and that means a lot to me this time of year that's harder to come by with a bunch of rain and cooler weather, and I miss it. I'm ready for whether it'd be back. So we can get back to that stuff. Now. Have you got on your model rockets you've got to multi-stage you guys like shooting them up in orbit? We haven't done multi stage yet, I think that's probably coming soon. This year this summer, we got into some really small ones. He's really small Motors. But even like the smallest motor you can buy there so fast. You can't see them and their tumble returns. There's no parachute so much simpler, which means they're like six bucks a piece rice if you blow one up or it goes away. It's not a big deal. And we lost several of the. Those this summer just kind of like shooting them into the sky, and realizing I have no idea where that went. It's gone forever. Just became a firework. It's done I did model rockets as a kid. It was like a hobby up myself because you know, like, you crip inert, and I got really good at climbing trees because I only had one rocket, and man, I was not going to lose that thing, and it was a parachute. Deploy. And you know, so so then California they just aren't a lot of really big field. So even if you go and shoot it off in the middle of a park. There's a good chance. The wind was going to get it in some joining house or something. Oh, yeah. You wave to it as it goes away. Yeah. Exactly. I hadn't thought about that in years man, these fun. Yeah. It it is right. I mean and getting on hiking stuff is fun too. But I I'm in for the rocketry something that we should mention to the listeners. Stephen also co host with Jason snow a great podcast all about the space program because you're a big space enthusiasts to. Yeah. So Jason I have a show called liftoff where we cover the space industry and win. That's quiet. We cover sort of the science side of it with some explainer episodes. Like, we did this big thing about how the sun works. Turns out the sun is complicated. Right. A bunch of stuff and sort of explained on the show the podcasts for several years. Now, there's one of the things we're Jason. I were just talking about it went Dan slack. Like, what why isn't this just when this just a show? And so I've been lucky enough to see a couple of launches bended NASA several times as press over the years. And it's it's nerdy. But it's not tech..

"They're just recommendations some apps that I've used a lot. I'm always willing to hear about any others. If anybody out there is using their applicants who other applications to effect. I would love to hear about especially especially if you'll using an app that supports it in a non traditional way, I would really like to know about that, you know, something. Like ferret, right? Which is you wouldn't necessarily assume that it would support the pencil, but it does to great effect. I would love to hear more about those. But Jason snow. I'm so happy to hear that you love your apple pencil. I do I do the combination again stuff that I could probably have done, you know, a couple years ago. But the combination of the software support being there where it wasn't when I first tried this and the the new hardware like the pencil, even even I like appreciate the new hardware in the sense that I think it makes the it makes it a tool that I might use right? Like again, if it was just the old hardware, even if I realized how great this was I would suddenly be in a position where I need to keep track of the of the apple pencil and make sure it's charged and all these things and those are barriers that would make me like after get it. Right. And the new pencil doesn't do that. Today's episode is brought to you in pop by friends Pinga paint, a some because they help keep the sites that you love online. They monitor your sightsee. You don't have to and give you real time feedback. Exactly what's going on times stuff breaks on the internet every single day. They detect around thirteen million outages every month that is willing to four hundred thousand outages every day. It doesn't matter. What size? "You by fresh books. Luna display and op see my name is my curly. I'm joined budgets and snow. All right, Mike, welcome back. Thank you. Jason snow. I hope you enjoyed your assignment a very good assignment. One of the best assignments I've had this year. Thank you very much. You're welcome. We have to a question from Petah and Peter wants to know Jason will your holiday lights, be smart lights on dumb lights this year. Oh, great question. And the answer is well first off deeming the the whites that are outside of the lights that are like on Christmas tree, which I will ask for both. Thank you. Okay. Well, the answer is the same which is that they're both on. I thought I'd take turns on the outside their attached to a smart switch. So they're dumb lights, but they're attached to a smart switch on the inside. However, they're also dumb lights attached to a smart switch so yes. And then I have them on a schedule. The I have both on schedule now. So which which leads to thing that delights me the most about this time of year, which is that I come out in the morning to make the tea and make breakfast, and it's still a little dark out because it's winter and the tree is on threes lit up three because I had a schedule in home kit set to turn the tree on like, fifteen minutes or thirty minutes before sunrise. So it's on it's not on overnight. But it's on when I get up in the morning, which is which is very nice. And then we do have also the lights on the outside. I put those on the smart switch those are on a separate schedule. So they go on in the morning for a little bit. And then. They're on the evening until you know, late in the evening when when we them off and this weekend, I had the I had the blower and the inflatable not inflatable the two men version of Santa Claus. You know, one of those guys that the air dancers slap, their you willing inflatable on flailing. I had he was on the roof for a little while he'll go back up later, but it rained overnight. So I took them down before the rain came. But I have I invested Mike invested in a blower because it was my dream..

"This is what everyone believes is what you believed. Never true because everybody was convinced that you destroyed me in the previous draft. And that really didn't happen. Exactly what we have learned is everybody super confident when they make in the mix. It's what happens on the day. Oh, yeah. What did happen on the day? Jason snow who took the wind today. So my scoring it's either sixty five or five to four based on a very particular question that we should probably solve. But either way whether it was sixty five or five to four it's you with one more point than me. Michaeli is the winner YouTube think I do upgradings, but I did it. I won. I won. Jason. I cannot tell you. I was about this because we've now tied where tied to to each on the events of the year, which just makes me feel good. Because I I'm happy the the ipad really helped me out. Right. Like that was I wasn't really really bad much because the way the event was stacked and at my fingers crossed came through. So let's run through these row. Quick right showy. Yeah. Okay. Definitely. So we'll go on your side. I knew I pads to have face ide-. Check. Check Photoshop for ipad. Check. Yep. So this is one of the ones of contention. You smart connector on the ipad. Pro there is one. But it wasn't clear. I don't think it was very clear at all. During the presentation. They had images of the thing where it was. And so there was an implication. But they didn't say we have a new smart connector, just as they didn't say they have no headphone Jack exactly which is one that you picked. So that's that's the point of contention which is. And I think it's something for us to revisit because you could make a strong argument that if a product was introduced and shown off and one of the features that had was this that it's I don't know if it's very fun to have a draft where if they don't mention it out loud. It we've picked role very specific reasons because we've had many problems in the past. I actually believed that the rule should stands it is. Because it allows for way less ambiguity will making the picks like if they don't show or it's not on a slide. Clearly, I don't think the point you count. So I don't know. I think if the argument would be if it's a product it's a feature of a product that is mentioned and that is introduced on stage. But they don't mention that product. You could maybe make the argument that there's an extension that happens there. But this is why we discuss it though. Right. Like, I could go either way on these the danger of going your way is you've got one of those like okay now, we need to look at the video that they show like you can see do you?.
