"Seamlessly drag it from one display to another. But yeah, it's been, I would say the show, we launched the entire verge off the back of this show. Yeah. We brought that audience over and for the folks who've been there the whole time with us. That's incredible if the folks who have joined us over the years, it's a pretty fun show to do. It's a pretty great community. So thank you all for listening. Okay, now get out of here. You can talk about computers. It's like my dad instincts expressing affection kick in. Now get out of here. Go make some money. Let's talk about WWDC. Broadly, David, we talked a little bit. It was great to be there in person. I know there was a lot of dunks about Apple brought us all out there and then we watched a video. Yes, that's just inherently optically silly that that occurred. But it's not like during a live WWDC. I was raising my hand and being like, Tim, number of questions. It's always a presentation. I mean, in a funny way, you could actually argue it was better to watch the video live, like actually being there, then sometimes it has been in the past to sit in the audience because there are a lot of things that when they do those AR demos, that's always my favorite when it's just like a person walking around on stage with their iPad. To be on the stream, you can see what they're looking at and they cut around and it looks sort of cool. We're just watching a person wander around a stage looking at an iPad. And so it definitely was like we flew to Cupertino to watch a video. But a, that's only like a small part of what WWDC actually is. And B, the vibes were just so good. People were so happy to be around these people again. It was actually at Apple Park in the spaceship in their huge gorgeous cafeteria, which was really cool. It was just, I don't know, it was fun to be back. I think in part just because it was fun to be back, but also like they did the event pretty well, I thought. They did a good job. David kept describing the vibe is the first day of summer camp. It was. Like everyone was just happy to be outside together, right? And then the point is not the presentation. The point is afterwards, we got to hold the computers in our hands. And I saw Phil schiller and Greg Josiah in Tim Cook walked in. He was Ariana Grande surrounded by security and everyone got very quiet. There was a very strange moment. First there was clapping and then there was a dead hush. And it's like, is he going to like the MacBook Air? He went and looked at it. Zoe had never seen it before. What if he just thrown it to the ground? It would be amazing. An amazing troll would be like, if he was like, what is this? Well, that's kind of what it felt like, because normally he used to have Johnny ive, who would give him the tour of Apple products, but this time he just sort of walked around by himself, being like, um. Well, no, the huge contract people. He was nowhere was nowhere nearby himself. No, but there was no one to like give him dog and pony show. It was just Tim Cook sort of casually considering a laptop in front of hundreds of TV cameras. It was truly on. And there's also the event itself. It feels amazing to even remark on this, but we were all together. We were sitting behind marques brownlee and next to Renee Ritchie and Joanna stern was two rows in front of us and Jason snow was there. And I high 5 Gruber. We were together and being able to watch all those people react to the news all at once. It's a very different feeling than watching a streamer on Twitter. So yes, it's very funny that we went to Apple Park for the world's fanciest drive in movie. I stayed home. I wore my pajama pants, just rolled over off of my bed to cover the event. It was great. It is easier to vlog at home, especially off the stream. Except for this one where the stream was like 6 minutes behind or something. We lived in the future by being there. No, no, you guys were almost exactly two minutes ahead of us. And so I kept reading the live blog and be like, all right, next person, get ready, and they're like, how do you know? And I'm like, the like. I also David and I are rusty. We invented a bunch of these moves, and then we completely forgot them. I was like, did you bring a camera and David was like, I did and go find fear in our video producer. Get an extra camera off it. So we're going to get better at. But that part was great. I just want to say that we haven't done events in three years. Google had a handful of people at IO. There's been a handful of weird Samsung one in one out moments. Apple just did it. And it was great. So it was cool to be there. It was cool to be in the Steve Jobs theater, although we weren't actually in the theater. We were just in the beautifully lit hands on space above the theater. Is that where they showed off the laptop was in the lobby? Yeah. Well, the wildest thing and I've definitely mentioned this before. The wildest thing about the Steve Jobs theater is there's speakers all around it like hidden in the grass and you walk up a long path to it and they just play like new age music and it sounds I kept describing it is like the wedding march that Tom Cruise would have played at a Scientology wedding to Katie Holmes..

"As fat as it is, almost all of it is the power supply and the fan or thrusters or whatever they call them. The computer itself is really just a little thin board, not much bigger than a couple of iPhones side by side. That's it. And they do need cooling because they're going to be running as fast as their little feet can run. But I have to say, trying as hard as I could to max it out, this ultra never got hot. The fan never got loud. It was going the whole time. Now, the interesting thing you're display has a fan in it, too. Yeah, there was some cool and cooling feels up at the top of it, where the vents were, which was interesting. This is a 27 inch monitor they call the stew display, 1500 bucks actually could spend more if you want to get a pivoting arm. Nano texture, glass. Fancy glass and stuff. It's a nice monitor. It's not a great monitor. It doesn't have HDR. It's only 600 nits of brightness, which there are brighter monitors out there. They're better monitors out there for a lot less. LG's ultra fine display, which Apple was selling their 5 K monitors 203 hundred bucks less. But what's interesting about this? It seems to be this has an iPhone built in. Yeah, that's kind of what it boils down to. So that's really weird. In fact, there was scooter X has shared the quote a few times. During fireballs, John Gruber went into the system information menu, graphic slash displays, and discovered that the studio display is running software version 15.4 with a build number, and that build number happens to be the same number that's associated with iOS 15.4. It's the latest iOS. Not even an old one. It's the brand new one. In fact, 11 running iOS 15.4. Some people did report. I don't know if you connected it if you did you have a software update on your monitor. No, not right away. Jason snow, a good friend of ours. His crashed. Yes. It did. It did. Now, this was always a puzzle when Apple said, yeah, we're going to put the a 11 bionic in it, which is the same chip in the iPhone 11 or a 1313. It's in the iPhone 11. For what? It does have some features like, hey, you know who, except that you still need a computer for you know who to talk back. It does have surround sound coming out of where the speaker is good. Did you like them? Spatial audio. And the speakers were better than what I was using before. So that's good. And it has a webcam built into it, which does center stages as apple's technology for following you around like the Mona Lisa. Just staring at you. However, the camera reportedly not very good. In fact, one person asked me if I needed to clean off my webcam..

"I we had the one link right. That was the first thing to happen. And now it's the blanket you can't linked to external payments sources From from apps. That sounds like that may be going away. They may be allowed to require in that purchase by apple to also be available which which is interesting because like if you're amazon sign in with apple kind of thing right the the you can have them but you have to show all of them. But that's the case of your amazon. And you wanna put links to kindle books in there do you just add thirty percent to the at purchase and then let people choose. I don't i don't know what all the ramifications of this are and my guess is that it's going to be much more complicated than everybody saying now but we need to mention it because this news this is massive news. It is what what is now. We can laugh about apple's batting themselves on the back for winning the case thing but like this will change the app store forever. I in some way maybe to be determined but in some way. But also apple's not wrong in this sense which is judge yvonne gonzalez rogers specifically said that the market that epic is fighting about is the digital mobile gaming transaction market epic wanted to define the market as essentially iphone transactions. And that would have meant. That apple is a monopolist because apple has the monopoly on iphone transactions and the judge said. No that's not it. What this is is a digital gaming market and epic has maximized its revenue everywhere else. And so this is what's left to it so it's trying to maximize its revenue here. Which is clearly what was going on. But the judge basically said no. Apple's not a monopoly you know just being successful does not make monopoly. But it's still going to have a knock on effect on the app store and the app store rules and honestly this goes into those who said apple strategy of fighting everything and then allowing incremental change to happen only when they lose or settle or have a law passed against them. You look at this and you say well maybe this is. I mean this is what they're expecting is that they're gonna lose some little bits but like they're not gonna lose their thirty percent and they're not going to be called a monopolist but they have to change the rules a little bit in ways that will probably not be as liberal as people think they are when all is put out there You could argue that from apple's perspective. This is a desirable result that that all the other threats didn't happen. This might be a best was case scenario for them right. Yeah i mean well in fact you could argue that. Depending on how pragmatic the people are inside apple. They knew that there was there. Were going to be up against it with some of their app store rules. They were just hoping that it would only be those and it allows them to go out and say all right. You're right we've heard you and we're going to be more fair while they're internally saying really we only had to give you the one thing not these other four things. We dodged a bullet there right like it can be seen as a loss for apple because they are going to have to do this opening up of app store rules but it depends on like did apple really think they were not going to have to change. I think internally. They probably expected that they were. They may look at this and realize that this is actually a better than expected ruling for them. But either way it's going to be a big deal and the way the way apps work is going to change and the way the economy of the app store works is going to change at least in some cases and that should be interesting to watch. Because it's been pretty static for the last decade. It's about time in my opinion Yeah we're gonna oversee kibera on this. We'll talk about it and a couple of weeks once. We have a lot more details than we have now But this was definitely worth mentioning. Something else was mentioning saint jude dog. Slash relay Please go and donate can go through the whole thing today. You hear about that again on monday. But i did want to. Just extend an absolutely monumental message. Thank you to every single listener. Here who's donated. We have currently paused. Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars raised in this year's campaign which has now put us over one million dollars in the last three years Choose as episode not. Monday's episode next week So i thank you so so much to everybody who's donated so far We still have a way to go. Continue to be getting your donations in for the kids to saint jude. A saint jude dot org slash relay and toget- podcastone on is coming up september seventeenth from twelve to eight. Pm eastern time twitched. Tv especially laugh. Then yeah absolutely very excited about that. And then i will be there for podcast a thon. Plus i've got game shows going on and on this jason snow are apparently. I am sure but i wish it could be there. I wish it could be there but so on my friend so do i. Maybe next time maybe next time it is time for the draft and we must start every job with the reading. The rules threatening the rules their business memo sort of rules this year. You'll get into so we aren't doing ten rounds. Twenty overall picks up temperature's each the draft will be split into three categories. We got four iphone rounds. Three watch rounds. Three other rounds. The winner of the previous draft guest pick fuss. She's jason for an item to count. It must either be clearly announced on stage or on a slight during the presentation and this must be verifiable from the keno video itself cannot be guesswork cannot be expectation it must be shown and clear. Yes this is. This is a slight adjustment because where we got into trouble. Last time was making assumptions about allowing picks to be made about things that couldn't be proven or disproven based on the contents of the keynote. Or in this case you know for keynote read video presentation and the rule here is. It's gotta be it's gotta be on the screen. It's see if it's small print if if it's a thing that flashes on briefly that's fine we can. We can go back in and adjudicate. that and litigate. Litigated that Because everybody loves that as much as we want. But if if it's a a thing that requires further research and pouring over pr and media websites and interviews and stuff like that. That's not in the spirit of this draft. Which has to be everything. That's on screen and everything that's mentioned so Ideally these will be as we go through a picks will decide this but the items that were choosing from should all be verifiable within the keno video. But if if there comes something that's not verifiable then it doesn't count because it has to be the proof must be in the video and i think in the future we're also going to try. I guess is probably most important for. Wc a to to try and create picks. That can't be proven. Yes they comes from all work in the beginning. That's on us. This is not sort of a after the fact we do this. It's sorta like the rule the meta rule about how we construct our lists that we're picking from because items a an item. I'll mention it now. It was later on in the rules. But it's adams are chosen from a predetermined list of choices which we have agreed among other things are not ridiculously obvious. And i'm just adding i'm amending are verifiable on screen and not ridiculously ob- obvious obviously idea here is.

"With jason. Half sets jess hooker jessica altman. I'm willing griswald. We're talking back to school you guys. Recently i went to my local meyer and rated the back cool section to get on my writing supplies. Because they're all in discount. Yeah get all the legal pads get all the different colored pens. Are you brand loyal Not really honestly not at all. I use to be like do she. Maybe more pretentious as the word use. When i'm my onstage books that i write in i use the the mole skin brands wrath for the most part At least when. I was in chicago. Because i was constantly writing but now that i'm at home actually i use like a. What's the bigger this bigger than a three by five card. I just made the dubber so those fit perfect my back pocket and i use those on stage now and my big thing that i do is i. Put it on the bench on stage before i get out there so that way. I don't walk onstage holding my beer holding my phone holding. No card takes a while to get set up a little four by six in there. Yeah dude. I used to love going school supply shopping. Yeah that was that was. Actually that was better than like getting the close. Yes because this is an extension of your personality. What's on my folders. What color are my pencils. These are very important decisions. You remember fourth grade when you've got a pro tractor and you're just like hell. Yeah i got a pro and then you never got to use it the whole year like you drew a circle one day and that was it. It felt like this sort of Like a super tool that was you. Were going to be able to do all kinds of star tractor over student circles. Yeah yeah and then. It wasn't until geometry to in highschool where i'm half asleep and maybe hung over. And i don't know what that's fun. Fun little inside of your life over in high school. I can't get over when you first started. He said i was at the local meyer and i raid rated. Yes i heard rated r. a. And you're like going through the stuff like that's an a these are see pencils. Don't even have this back in my day. Get green five five-star binder. Yeah wow. I didn't know. They made number three pencils. Jeez one worse than number two another number choke architect idiot. They do have been doing this for a long time. There's there's dick dixon. They are dixon but they're They usually sell them like at At the hardware store because they're carpenter pencils but they're all black in. So i would always by my kids their pencils from there because then they knew those were their pencils. Nobody else had black pencils and so max. Meg still talk about the kid. That always tried to rip off his black pencils because he thought they were cool. And then i was like me. And let's just get this kid a package of black pencils you know. It's the both of you but yeah like still we just. We just always have those black pencils. And that's that's one of the things for them she. That's the modern you that's like everyone should be supported if that might it'd be like well we're getting you purple through the kid. No one else gets to have the pills the principal. Yeah do you guys remember what the first day of school smelled like. Oh yeah like. That is such a specific smell to me Not really sinus issues. She she did you. Take a puff off her. Inhaler flashback of second grade. You can go stand in the core by the wall and watch the clock and nealer. Oh no i'm sorry. What you're reading shunned go. It's like you had to go separate from the class. Go watch the clock because when you're young and you had to administer it yourself when that was legal. Yeah you take a hit. You'd watch the clock. hold your breath or your second. Puff would be so long after. I didn't realize this went back so far for you over sure and then you pretend like you're smoking you hit the inhaler kids drinking. This explains a lot still pretend like i'm smoking. If i have something remotely close to the shape of a cigarette. I pretend like smoking. See you know what helped me with that is starting to smoke cigarettes again on that train for about three weeks this summer. What's the worst of off-again. They're so tricky to quit I just had a thing that i wanted to say free. Oh yeah healers. When i was a kid. I remember always being jealous of the kids like first day of school. You show up. And you're like holy smokes dylan. Got braces is a man now and a little rubber bands and there. And you're like oh mother. I did not know that pink could be cool rocking about stuff like that. I was jealous. yeah i wanted to. I glasses too. I one time. I told my mom. I may take me to the optometrist. I don't know if this is true. Right crafted in my ad. In my head i i took. She took me once one week and got perfect vision. And then i made it or take me back at other week and it was like worse. Blind basically hoping i could trick the dock and he was like dude. You didn't lose all your eyesight in a week. That's a possible. I was show inhalers braces glasses as a kid. You don't understand but you want us remind you envied that. Yeah but that's a good thing about blue light glasses now. Anybody can wear glasses and they still look cool. And it's an accessory so that's for looking at screens to right. It's specific to screens really or any kind of of this new. Led overhead lights. I don't have much trauma from being a kid but getting glasses was traumatic caused a lot of times. It's the teacher that notices it before your parents okay. So and so's having trouble reading at school so it trickled down to my mom and then i got glasses. The problem is. I didn't wanna wear the glasses second grade or third somewhere in there so i'd get to the bus. Put them in my pocket but the teacher knew i had gotten glasses. So after a few days The teacher relies Jason snow weren't as glasses so middle class and they realized what i was doing a eventually figured it out and they she stopped the class. In like jason you have something your pocket you wanna share with the rest of the class for. Everyone called me out. I had to stood up and had to put on these and these are. Let's put the year on it. Because in nineteen eighty-one no one had cool glasses now. What the hipsters wear now. The they were huge terrible terrible. And i had to put these offers on my head word. Exactly i instantly. I cried went from whatever it was to instant. Nerd was the drew carey style like the military about two different styles to choose exactly bigger. Bigger boyer girl. That's probably that's probably better frames aren't as as the glasses are just massive like the actual lenses themselves. Actually just gonna show you yeah They can be bifocals. But it's just the lens huge like what but there's a bug or they say coke bottle glasses with those are. Those are bifocals. But yeah there's a it looks like a big figure. Eight in the middle. Yes eight eight with a little bridge between you know like the hospital bridge to the parking lot. Kind of a weird comparison any bridge. i have said But yeah we're talking Back to school bits today do this. There's something about back to school a couple of weeks ago when i started seeing the back to school school sales start talking. Dammit this sucks. i'm. I'm still an adult but there's still that weird party that never one summer to end what i always remember as a kid being pretty stoked for first day of school. Just use your pals absolutely. That's the only time the kids get up without any fight mike. They're up before the alarm like they're ready. They're feeling good and it's just is very peaceful day for mothers that i as school when nobody wants to fight you in there good mood. They like what.

"This is Jason snow co host and editor of WNBA weekly. I'm just jumping in real quick. Obviously, this is an unusual Saturday release and part of the reason why is because we have started doing these live streams on YouTube that we tweet out Twitter and send out a message on Facebook, and so we're going to do these as interesting things in the league happen. And we want to provide you live reactions. We have these live streams, so I strongly recommend you over to our YouTube page WNBA weekly hit, subscribe, hit the notification bills that you get notified when these things are happening if you happen to be on Twitter at the time, we will send out tweets or if you're on Facebook sit out a message that's not a surefire thing. So go ahead and check us out on YouTube. That's probably the best way to get immediate notification on your phone that something is going on that you might want to be a part of. And that's what this is. So last night, I hope to produce a show where Logan, Steve, Wint live, and gave the reactions to the first night of basketball kind of reviewed some of the games that happen. And as well as talked about some of the current topics responded to the kind of mean tweets style video that happened. So lots of things on this. That's what this is this is the audio transcript or the audio version of what that life was a lifetime had video. And so you could see Stephen Logan live, and in person. So we'd encourage you over to YouTube and check that out. But if you're in your car and not able to do that this is an awesome way to check it out as well. Great analysis, so without any further do, I'm going to toss it over to the audio from the lifetime, that we had last night, vans. The season is back lugging. What's up and it's going to be. It is best. We like we're always constantly messaging each other anyway. But it's always like speculative during the office. Now, now, we can enter that Matt. I think in almost any case SSD from a spinning disk is going to help you the most. Yep. I think so too. You know is an all machine so still going to feel all in places, but that the putting that SSD in it will be good. Didn't you do this like mums laptop assumption sold it to a college student? Yeah. I took her laptop, and I pulled the old drive out of it. I I did put in some more ram, but also put an SSD, and it ran way better than because it was. It was an older laptop. It was running on ST and felt way faster. I'll look at that. I just found six colors. So if you're having issues, maybe you should take it and have apple look at it. My ipad pro still gives me as much power as the old wounded. So if you have seen significant changes than maybe to get checked out and Gary asks, which would be beneficial editing toll point nine inch. I Pat pro or thirteen inch macbook, bro. The fifteen inch is beyond my budget. Well at this point. I think my answer is the macbook pro because as much as I like, the I've had pro I I think the macbook pro has has tried and true video editing options on there, and that's what you should go with. I would love to be able to say that the I had pro is a is a straight up either choice or pick between the two. But there while there are video editing apps on the ipad. "My name is Mike Kelly, and I'm joined by Jason snow. I just know I'm Mike Hurley, how are you enjoying my country? I very well. I'm in Chicago, Illinois right now. We'll talk about why in a minute because right now, nobody cares about that. Because one is hashtag snow told question which this week comes from Jonathan and Jonathan wants to know Jason when you make cereal. Do you put the cereal in the bowl? I or the milk in the bowl. I. This is a weird question, which is only appropriate I suppose Jonathan. Yeah. Cereal. I, yep. Then milk yet because you need to use the serial to gauge how much milk, and if you put the serial on the milk, the cereal just floats on the milk. And it doesn't tell you anything. I feel like well, I'm about to say is type of thing that you should never say. But I think people that put milk in fuss monsters. Yes. So I was gonna say I know that in England, especially there is the great debate about t- about you do milk in first or not. Yeah. Same deal. Mogo milk goes in off the woods. Yeah. Usually put the milk in later on a us was in the mug. All the cop was the way to judge. How much milk is required. Yeah. Simple. Simple. Right. Because you can then add more milk. And so it reaches of milk and fussed and pull the Syrians milk's going to spill the ball, right 'cause Cyril lines in the Milken spills everywhere as good or it's just gonna float on top of the milk. And then what have you done? You've just got a cereal that you have to dig through to get to the milk. It's the idea. There is the milk gets poured over the cereal and. It helps coat the cereal milk xactly. So distributes the milk a little more widely, and then you can you can start so. Yeah, that's my that's my story on this show. We shall lots of opinions about things, and yeah, we get lots of responses. You know, we talk about like again like today, we're gonna talk about what we like more touch idea face ID, a guarantee the majority of feedback the we're gonna get this episode is people's feelings about the cereal milk question. Yeah. Or more broadly milk in for snow. Just general we should have. I will acknowledge the I will occasionally put the milk in I in my wife's St. only because I'm lazy. And if you put the milk in first, and then put the tea in stop boy, you don't have to start. But still unacceptable, but it's not yet bears. Bonus question for Jonathan Jason. What is your favorite cereal? I don't have a great answer here. I as an adult. I don't eat cereal very much. And when I do it is some cauti- e heart health, it's like little little hearts and circles that are. It's boring cereal is what I eat when I eat it. I don't eat it a lot is technically. So people say oatmeal is a serial which I don't think I would say is sometimes. Sometimes still same oatmeal with some Naple syrup actually in that. I like that. And then my, but my all time favorite, my childhood favourite, the Goto the one that I didn't get very often. I loved it. When I got it captain crunch loved it. I captain crunch for the first time in Portland Exo Exo for episode re which is the show where we ate cereal from van ranked from van then I I'm not in that episode. Although you may hear me in the background. I was witnessing it from behind like the the core group. I was watching as all that happened, by the way, I have to correct you Mike, it's not captain crunch, and it's Cap'n crunch. Kevin Cap'n crunch, see apostrophe in my favorite cereal is something which is very close to what is called cinnamon toast crunch in America. But in the UK, it is cooled curiously cinnamon, which I think this name for a cereal that has ever existed curiously cinnamon, how curious it's the people who brought you bizarrely vanilla. Strangely chocolate. Could not be more English. Okay. Great good to know. Good. To know..

"Promo code power at checkout to get ten percent off our thanks to Luna display for their support of this. Show and all of relay FM. So what about the ipad? You said you've got a one of the new pros. But where does that fit in at work, or is that a device just at home kind of depends? I don't use it at ton at work. I mean, I could but it's primarily just kind of my tablet. I watch a lot of movies on it. Actually, I would say this now that I'm traveling so much. It has become really useful. Just to have a great travel device if I need to access some more stuff, but I don't have time to do. Maybe. Halftime is the wrong word. Maybe I don't want to drag out the full laptop. Then it's really great that. I can you know power through some emails or look at some other documents or pull some things up. But if I'm being totally candid, I mean, I spent a lot of money on the ipad pro eleven inch to fifty six model with LT, basically to washing-up lex. So I'm not the best person to take power tips from I'm not a Federico or Jason snow, but I do like the new machines so much. It's really good. It's one of those things I want to do more things on it. You know, I was on the flight recently. And I saw a guy with a twelve inch macbook in the next Rover. This is smallest macbook apple minks. And even that wasn't really usable on an airplane. Because they've got the seats so close together in the tray and the guy in front of them was leaning back lately. I think at this point a laptop is almost not feasible on an airplane, unless you've got nice seats. No your dad on. I mean, it's actually one of those things that are really like about the surface. Go is that. It is. I used it on a commuter flight from between Scotland San Francisco so one of the really small flights. So even if you have the nice seats, you have like no trae table at all. And we'll because the nice Easter basically, just like a tiny bit more like like room that fit like that that device fits on on the table. But if somebody leans back, you know, even even those things are Pence, so you're right. Like having an eleven inch ipod is a really good way to to kind of get work done. If you do that. I do not have the keyboard. I use like an external bluetooth keyboard because I don't like the apple keyboard case, I'm waiting for Logitech or somebody else to come up with something. But like better, but I just don't like the apple keyboard case. I never have. And so I don't have that. I know a lot of people like it great. It's just for for tactile reasons for the stuff that I do. I don't. So. Instead when I when I need to type I travel with like a Logitech bluetooth keyboard that I just keep it in my bag. Make mission. I do like a lot of the Microsoft products. As I said earlier, I use Microsoft Word all the time for my job. But when it comes to presentations, you're going to have to pull keynote out of my cold dead hands. Keynote so much keynotes great. But you're using PowerPoint a lot, and I am I think we haven't had on the show that's been daily using PowerPoint maybe ever. So how is PowerPoint? And what do you like about it? And what do you do not like about it? It's gotten a lot better. So it's interesting because if I'm doing a presentation that is not something that needs to be repeatable or that is you know, where like uploading the slides someplace, I still use keynote. That's the so, but I do we even have kind of a template that some people on our team use that have some of our graphics and things that is organized designed for keynote we have one for PowerPoint as well..

"Because of the same reason that it's on TV's and stuff is that it just gives them another outlet for people to give the money and watch their stuff. And the one of the things is that. A lot of the ways that these small TV stuff works whole web based right? So they're already building a essentially a web player. Yeah. Like, or at least they all creating what would need to be the underpinnings for a web based system on the TV's. So I don't know how much hotter beef into the front end. "Today show is brought to you by pinged him care of and Luna display. My name is Mike Kelly. I'm joined by Jason snow high Justice now, happy happy upgrade day, Mike. I didn't say that it's Monday because you know, who knows when people are listening to this upgrade any day. It could be like weeks away could be years away. But must be wild to listen to us talk about news stories. Yeah. I don't even wanna know. I don't wanna go back there because we must move forward. Just full of things that we were wrong about I guess what I'm saying. Nobody wants to hear about that. I guess so a hashtag snow to- question comes from Brian this week. Bryan wants to know Jason what is your desert island album, Mike, you can answer this question. Do I even need? You know, it's kind of this. Yes. But you know, what I forgot when I saw this. I forgot that like it didn't put two and two together Oviously me and you've had a forty minute discussion about your favorite album. It didn't jogging to my head. Honestly, I didn't even think about it. Until you put the Lincoln knows interesting. I used to series of my inquisitive podcast business back in two thousand fifteen where I brought on a bunch of really interesting people in all kind of wider, podcasting community and awesome. What is your favorite album and Jason picked crowded house self tie out self titled album by crowded house. So yes as a really good album, I like this pick because it a album full memories of. So that's the one that's still one you'd pay is like not even just your favorite album, but the one album you'd be happy to listen to forever. I mean, I I'm just I think that's going to be easiest answer. I could give I didn't do the calculation of like could I cheat in pick like some sort. Out of greatest hits compilation box set album. That's like eight disks or something. And all that. And I just decided I'm not gonna I'm not gonna go down that path the best of music, compilation bucks. That's right. That's right. All the music on an ipod that I've been fring with me. This was mostly spurred on by the fact that what it was like the day after so Wednesday. Xiaomi the Chinese phone manufacturer. Royale was just a phone that folded in Hof like a book, but shall Meese phone? It's like a a rectangle, and you fold the two sides around to make it like a smaller rectangle, I like this idea because my thinking was you could follow it only Hof it, right? And then you could have like basically had three different aspect ratios. Xiaomi gave no information about it. Just that this is their idea. And I thought again, it looked interesting..

"Oh, Jason snow. Finally today. Jeremy asks, do you think apple will experiment with more region specific iphone models in the future? Like the jewel. Sim tennis max in China to compete stronger in markets where maybe they need a little bit of a leg up. It's possible. I think that the reason they went with the jewel Sem was. So it would sell better in China rafting. That was why they did that. Yeah. I think apple is open to this. But what I would say is that every design variation has a cost and apple needs to see potential payoff for them to do it. And the building a phone for China. Given Apple's commitment to China and wanting to be appealing in China makes sense. Building region specific phones for markets where the iphone is less appealing because it's too expensive. Basically means making region-specific cheap iphones. I think it's possible. It would be a real break from strategy break in strategy from them to do that. They would they would be purpose building a new cut rate, cheap iphone four markets that can't afford the iphone and there's a question of like does that devalues the iphone maybe the iphone brand perception, it's a high quality product. Maybe. But if you're in a market if you're failing to get any traction in a market like India because you're just out completely out of range for anybody. I wonder if they would do that saying we can't be a luxury brand in India. If our phones are cheapest phones to expensive we need to build a phone that will be priced like a luxury brand in India that people who are want, you know, who have the money who are middle class in India will will by and right now, it seems like most of their phones just can't crack that. And that price is one of the big reasons why. So, you know, I think not impossible, but that would be a real change in strategy for them over just building a just selling and leaning into the models that are cheaper and trying to sell them in those markets. It would be, you know, hey, apple just had their big with the with their forecast for their sales. Phone sales are slowing. Would it be? She unlikely for them to take a totally new approach to a market like India or Brazil or any of these other markets where they have not had as much traction. No, I would say, although it'd be a big break for them. I feel like they're in a position now with the iphone where they might be willing to take some some risks and go outside their comfort zone because they want to keep expanding. But you know, it's a I I think it's a coin toss kind of like they might do it. But it would be a big change. So I wouldn't expect it, but you know, anything's possible given where they are right now. All right. If you would like to send a question for us to finish show with descendant tweet with the hash tag on upgrade. And it may be picked for a future episode. "Luna display and squarespace. My name is Mike Kelly, and I am joined by Mr. Jason snow. Hi, Jason snow how Mike Hurley how is Seattle Washington. I am. Yes. I'm in a hotel room in Seattle. Having just attended the second pod con. It was wonderful. I really like Seattle. I like that. We're kind of like that. We're on the same time zone. I don't like recording at nine in the morning. But here we are anyway, welcome to my world. It's nine AM Pacific on. It's not Mondays Tuesdays recording this because I had some travel for the holiday weekend in the US. And so we pushed the release back day. But yes, this is what it's like for me nine AM podcasts is what I do. Like, nobody cares about this. Jason we have a smell question for Mark today. Marc asks Jason if you were stationed on the USS enterprise, that's the Star Trek thing if you what is issue. Would you want to hold and which enterprise would you want to be on? So this is a tricky question because is sort of like, I I would like to minimize my my chance of of having to put on a red shirt and then being killed by an alien. So the what I want to say is like I wanna be the cruise director on captain Picard 's enterprise, the enterprise d because is that a job, you know, basically like it's like a big cruise ship, right? No threat. Oh, okay. Yes. Hanging out like one vote or selling on the entertainment. Yeah. That's right. I do some, you know, I I I take reservations for the holiday stuff like that. I a fund the fund answer would be I'm going to be the navigator on caffeine kirks enterprise because there were lots of them over time. Because you know, check wasn't there in the first season. And all that that seems like a fun job. There's lots of buttons and switches to flip and you get to like go, you know, warp factor eight, and, you know, steers heart about and all of that kind of stuff, and that would be fun. So that's my that's my fantasy answer. But my real answer is what would be the safest place from to be on the starship enterprise. Yeah. And I think I would be very well equipped to do any of that stuff. Like, if I like, the idea of cruise director does seem like a fun thing. Do they have podcast on Star Trek spaceships? I mean, technically, I think we would be in the communications department, right? Have to open the hailing frequencies and stuff like that. And we'd say. Lieutenant Hurley of contact the Klingon ship and you go put Hello klingons. Wow. Did you like to hear a podcast? I feel like I have a pretty high rank 'cause Lieutenant on just for that. That seems like a great deal. Thank you Mark for sending in that suggestion if you would like to send in a question to help US Open a future episode of upgrade to send in a tweet with the hash tag, snow talk couple of items of follow up. So last week. We were talking about the potential for the iphone to get three cameras and one of the things we were talking about was the proposed mock-up based upon information, you know, in in quotation marks from an account, which recount at on leaks. Seems to have had some interesting stuff in the past. They posted a different prototype based more information of the three camera setup. Now, we spoke about the idea, maybe they were going to do that weird square with the cameras all different places. Maybe there's some benefit to that this this this different. Prototype. This like has the three cameras in a horizontal orientation in the middle of the back of the phone, but it looks very much like the current kind of design with just like the the oval with the cameras inside. Now, this feels way more to me like something apple would do visually. But again, I don't know how it helps by having the three cameras in that exact arrangement..

But they both go, but but Johnny I've famously doesn't really like being on stage. I mean, he's done it. I've seen them at the New Yorker festival. But he's he's guarded and reserved in a way that, you know, Phil Schiller and Craig federici aren't right. I mean, federal Giza goof, almost you know, he came running out the one time, you know, like Johnny is not going run on stage. I'll tell you my favorite guests at those live shows is always Federica because not only is he just kind of fun. And then what of us? He's he he always says more than he will let me to he's excited about the stuff. You know, he's enthusiastic about it. And it comes out and Schiller is interesting Schiller is the best at it. It's almost unbelievable that he it you. If you look for like, Phil Schiller doing something like that. It's like he's he hasn't done it. But he is you would think that he's been on like the tonight show multiple times. You know, he is so utterly at ease. And seems. Like, you know, one of those guests who's on TV talk shows couple times a year every year. Right. It it's uncanny. How good he is at it. Whereas, but he's also while he seems like he's totally natural. He he is again can't really be knocked off message. Even if the message is different than when he's delivering a keynote. Whereas Craig is is a little bit more of a free Wheeler. You think maybe after reporting the Steve Jobs for all those years? Nobody can scare you. I wonder that's a that's a good question. And I again stuff usually comes together towards the the last minute. You know, like so last year, Mike Rockwell who does machine learning in at apple was was the guest with Craig? And it was informed by the fact that it was that was a big part of what they were announcing WW DC, but I didn't find out about it till like the week before. You know, what do you think about this? And like I said I said to my contact an awful PR. I was like I would love to talk to him. It's fascinating. And I know you're not going to answer this. But I was like I would especially like it. If there's a lot of machine learning announcements coming in the keynote because. I'm sure I'll be able to come up with a lot of questions in the next day. And if not maybe not so much. You know? We used to do a podcast called sub net you and I- Stephen, and it's gone. Now, we did. So we're gonna talk about headlines here. See how that goes? Yeah. A lot of. Apple headlines. I don't always want the show to be about apple. But apple there's a lot of apple stuff going on this week that we probably should talk about the battery replacement program last year. There was less skepticism about went him. Cook mentioned the battery replacement program is one of the reasons why Apple's results were not what what they were expecting. They were going to be. We'll find out the actual results in a couple of weeks. But John Gruber, our friend over during fireball did what he always does which is dropped news sort of subtly and just mentioned. Oh, yeah. Here's something. I heard that nobody's reported about which was that Tim cook. Apparently, according to John Gruber told apple employee's that they replaced eleven million batteries under the twenty nine dollar battery replacement program deal that they offered in twenty eighteen now as somebody who knows people in various apple retail stores. I had already heard that basically the apple retail stores were. Swamped without a replacement that it was an enormous problem actually for staffing and for efficiency at apple stores because so many people were bringing those phones, and I think a lot of us heard as the program ended in December that a lot of people rushing to the apple store in December to get in for the cheaper price. Right under the wire. And so I wasn't surprised by this at all. But it does have these interesting ramifications not only potentially that they were doing it at a loss. But the larger implication that this is apple by trying to avoid a scandal about like slowing down your phone. When your battery is bad educating a big portion of its audience that when your phone slows down instead of buying a new iphone, you should just go to the apple store and get new battery. Yeah. It's hugely interesting. I mean antidote Elise. I'm leaving with that. It seemed like the people I knew upper retail and going into the store that they were throughout the year really busy with the battery replacement program. And I think to your point that only sped up the end of the year. I know people in my family being December's. Like, hey, if you haven't done this yet, go ahead and do it. And I think they're couple interesting things one was apple surprised by how many people did it actually came in and got their battery placed imagine sometimes throughout the year. They had an idea of what the number would be, but if a year ago, and it started there was a battery shortage and they had to like ramp battery production, and you would go and get your basically your place in line. They would call you. When the battery came in, you know, eight or nine days later than you do it. They got that under control in December. At least at least in my store with my family members. It was come in. You get done an hour, and then you leave. So I do wonder if the volume of customers was higher than apple anticipated and how they adjusted for that. But to for me, at least, the the this number this eleven million shows that it was the right decision that apple did something, you know, they kind of got caught in this really bad situation. But the way they handled it was the right way. Because people responded, positively to it, you know, eleven that's a lot of iphones getting cracked up and having batteries put in them. And that's good for the customers..

We'll find out the actual results in a couple of weeks. But John Gruber, our friend over during fireball did what he always does which is dropped news sort of subtly and just mentioned. Oh, yeah. Here's something. I heard that nobody's reported about which was that Tim cook. Apparently, according to John Gruber told apple employee's that they replaced eleven million batteries under the twenty nine dollar battery replacement program deal that they offered in two thousand eighteen now as somebody who knows people in various apple retail stores. I had already heard that basically the apple retail stores were. Swamped without a replacement that it was an enormous problem actually for staffing and for efficiency at apple stores because so many people were bringing those phones, and I think a lot of us heard as the program ended in December that a lot of people are rushing to the apple store in December to get in for the cheaper price. Right under the wire. And so I wasn't surprised by this at all. But it does have these interesting ramifications not only potentially that they were doing it at a loss. But the larger implication that this is by trying to avoid a scandal about like slowing down your phone. When your battery is bad educating a big portion of its audience that when your phone slows down instead of buying a new iphone, you should just go to the apple store and get new battery. Yeah. It's hugely interesting. I mean, anecdotally. I'm leaving with that. It seemed like the people I knew upper retail and going into the store that they were throughout the year really busy with the battery replacement program. And I think to your point that only sped up the end of the year. I know I people in my family being December's. Like, hey, if you haven't done this yet, go ahead and do it. And I think they're couple interesting things one was apple surprised by how many people did it actually came in and got their battery placed imagine sometimes throughout the year..

But what is your favorite again? Taco tack. Oh, taco there's no way to say it because if I say, it's like, it's like talk. Oh, talking is if I say it like a British person. It sounds ridiculous. If I say, I can imagine Jason my sound ridiculous to attack. Oh, taco taco taco taco. I will this is an interesting question. Congratulations. Steve, I don't know if I have a favorite taco. I like I grew up with the most as is typical of the stuff made by my mom, the most mid western of Mexican food, which is a hard shell with ground beef and a little bit of quote unquote, Mexican sauce in it with some like cheese and lettuce on top. And you know, what that is comfort food. I still like that. And we have that occasionally here at home, but we also have soft tacos a lot. I don't love corn tortillas. I prefer flour tortillas. I know that that that's heresy. But it's just the way it is for the flavor of flour to to Cohen. Yeah. That's it. It's it's about the flavor. I don't I don't love the corn. Tortilla flavor in a soft taco, the hard tacos are are are corn too. But it's different there. And there's a place in Novelli Joes taco. Lounge that is good. And they make these shrimp tacos that are little fried shrimps. So they're like little prawn little bread shrimps. And really, it's really good. So I think I might say that the place you took me to just Huckle lounge. No, no. You went to the fan. We took you to the fancy mcdonagh's that we never go to because it's too expensive. No Joe's taco lounges a dive. It's great. But it's a dive. So. Yeah. That that I'm going to say, I'm gonna say the shrimp, shrimp tacos from just talking lounge, but you know, honestly, all-talk does are my favorite. That's my answer. All tacos are my favorite. I love. All tacos. I am a native Californian if you'd like to send in a question to open a future episode of upgrade to send into tweet with the hash, tag, snow talk. And you may be picked.
